IT started life as a small bush hospital, but it’s now catering to the needs of a growing population in Ferntree Gully and surrounds. This week, the Angliss Hospital celebrated its 75th anniversary. Starting out in 1939, the hospital was then known as the Ferntree Gully Bush Nursing Hospital. It started off with just 10 beds, consisting of two, two-bed wards and six singlebed wards. There was also room for two extra beds on the enclosed verandah. The hospital was the vision of Sir Gilbert Chandler and was funded by Sir William Angliss. Building the new hospital cost only £5,000, with Sir William giving £1,000 toward the cost and the M.M Nicholas family had contributed £500. The hospital already had more than 250 members on its opening day. It took just four months from laying the foundation to the hospital’s first day. Since then, the hospital has grown to 141 beds and provides the community with a range of emergency, medical, surgical, maternity and rehabilitation services. Angliss Hospital chief of Clinical and Site Operations Ben Kelly said the local community had been there every step of the way. He said the auxiliaries continued to be outstanding supporters with their fundraising efforts over the years. Mr Kelly said another reason for the hospital’s success was its loyal and hardworking staff. “No matter what their role in the hospital, their dedication has been second to none,” Mr Kelly said. “Some things may have changed since the Angliss was a bush hospital, but our commitment to delivering quality healthcare over the past 75 years is a commitment we will hold on to well into the future.” Last week the Mail spoke to a number of long-time staff members at the Hospital.
