By MELISSA MEEHAN EXPERTS say that what used to be a city drug is infiltrating rural areas at an unprecedented rate.

A recent Turning Point report showed the use of ice, also known as crystal methamphetamine, has risen across the state.

Local police say they could execute a warrant on clandestine labs every day of the week in the Yarra Ranges, Knox and Maroondah regions.

‘Gloria’ gives PM heaps IT’S BEEN a tough week for the Warburton grandmother who prompted the Prime Ministerial wink that went viral on social media after she revealed she supplemented her disability pension on an adult phone sex line.

She makes no apologies for her work, or for her no-holds-barred lashing out at Tony Abbott and his government’s budget, but the reality of social media has hit home and she is hanging up her phone – literally!

That the ‘wink’ has swamped the real message behind the call to Jon Faine’s ABC talk back segment on Wednesday, 21 May, is a double-edged sword.

“If it was the catalyst for him making

an idiot of himself, up to a point, that’s a good thing,” she says .

If she were to make the call again however, she would be just as passionate, and as angry – but perhaps not as forthcoming with details that led to her being ‘outed’.

The frustration and anger ABC listeners heard in Gloria’s voice had been building as budget leaks painted an increasingly grim picture for people already struggling to make ends meet.

After paying rent, 67 year-old Gloria who suffers from heart problems and emphysema, has $200 a week to live on; that’s food, clothing, power, fuel, wood and things most people take for granted such as gifts for her grandchildren.

“Financially, I walk along the edge of a precipice, and it doesn’t take much

to go over. I had been seething and becoming increasingly apprehensive about how it was going to affect me and worrying about it,” she said.

“But it’s not just me; there are some a lot worse off than me.

“A six-month wait is appalling,” she says of the budget move that will mean some young people will be without an income for six months after leaving school or finishing employment.

“It’s just creating a huge underclass; making people who are already disadvantaged more disadvantaged, and making more of us disadvantaged.”

Julia Gillard came under fire too for her ‘reforms’ that saw single parents forced onto the lower Newstart payment.

“If I had been able to talk to Julia Gillard about what they did to single par-

ents, I would be just as angry with her - partly because you expect more from Labor,” she added.

Gloria said she has had a lot of support for her views on the inequity of a budget that she said put the onus on the poor to do the heaviest lifting.

“It’s this punitive attitude, it’s alienating people and it’s pushing people to the margins,” she said inviting the local Liberal MP (Tony Smith) to walk a mile in the shoes of those the budget will most affect.

“I would love to see the Liberal person who represents us come up here and try to live on what many people up here have to survive on,” Gloria said.

“It would be good to talk, and to know how he feels about this budget.”

THE driver of a ute that run into the back of a traffic control vehicle on the Warburton Highway on Wednesday 21 May, has received an infringement for careless driving.

The MakeSafe Traffic Management vehicle had stopped in the left lane of the two-lane section of the highway near Allsops Road around 4.15pm to collect roadwork signs when the ute slammed into the back pushing it into the embankment.

There were no injuries, however emergency workers at the scene said the situation could have been very different had the MakeSafe driver been on the embankment side of his vehicle, and had the ute been carrying a passenger.

Hillcrest CFA and police from Healesville attended, diverting traffic around the scene while the area was cleared.

Karina Doughty from Warburton Environment said the meeting came at a time when Mount Bride in the La La Falls Catchment was listed on Timber Release Plans for logging.

“This is an opportunity to consider a more inclusive and truly sustainable plan for our region,” she said.

The Great Forest National Park proposes to add 355,000 hectares of forests to the existing 170,000 hectares of protected forest in Central Highlands.

Men’s vow for shed life MORRISONS Men’s Shed members say they are determined to carry on despite losing as much as $12,000 in the Morrison House closure.

President Jack Kleynjan said while the men’s shed was devastated when Morrison House announced its closure, the group was now looking forward to a bright future on its own.

“At first we didn’t know what we were going to do but we were determined to carry on regardless,” he said.

“We virtually set up straight away as our own identity and we kept the name Morrisons, and people have wondered why we have, but people know us as Morrisons.

Mr Kleynjan said losing the money was a blow.

“We had between

$10,000 to $12,000 that we had made that was saved,” he said.

“This was money we had made by doing work for community organisations, barbecues and other events - our members had given weekends to do some of these.”

However, despite the loss of funds, Mr Kleynjan said the group was now more determined than ever to get back on its feet and continue to service the community.

“We now share the lease on our old shed with Upper Yarra Community House and, while previously we had to share the shed with others, we will now have it on our own and are able to tackle larger jobs,” he said.

“It gives us a lot more room and we will be able to do a lot more work now,” he said.

$60,000 pledged to keep services

By REBECCA BILLS A TOTAL of $60,000 per year in funding has been pledged to continue neighbourhood house services in Mount Evelyn following the closure of Morrison House.

Yarra Ranges Council has welcomed the recent Department of Human Services (DHS) funding which has eased uncertainty about

services in the town.

Council officers worked with DHS, CHAOS, Eastern Regional Libraries and local stakeholders to develop the funding proposal.

Yarra Ranges councillor Maria McCarthy thanked Minister for Community Services Mary Wooldridge and DHS for the funding support.

She said the funding will provide a much needed

POLICE are investigating a shed and bungalow fire they believe was deliberately lit last weekend in Monbulk.

Detective Senior Constable Rod Newberry said emergency crews were called to a fire not long after 1am on Sunday 18 May. He said that the Wishing Well nursery had also been broken into, with the stolen items left in the burnt down shed.

“The shed and bungalow were very close to residential properties which are a concern for us,” Detective Sen Const Newberry said.

“They cut the fence, and broke into the property.

“It’s on a main road, so we’re hoping someone has seen them and can give us some information.”

Both buildings were destroyed by fire.

POLICE will be out in force over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, with marked and unmarked cars flooding the Yarra Ranges.

Acting Inspector for the Yarra Ranges, Colin McKinney said police would saturate the area over the weekend, targeting speeding and distracted drivers.

He said while serious collisions in the area were down, speed and distraction were the main causes of crashes.

“There have been a number of vehicles seized as a result of this under the anti-hoon legislation,” Acting Insp McKinney said.

“We’ve been doing a fair bit of work on this.”

Acting Insp McKinney said police had also seen a decrease in thefts from cars in the area after a spate in recent months.

He said drivers should always be aware of their surroundings and ensure they locked their cars - even if just parked in driveways, garages or on the street.

HEALESVILLE tourist icon, Healesville Sanctuary, is celebrating a landmark birthday to coincide with the town’s 150th, with 80 years of history at the well-visited destination.

The Sir Colin MacKenzie Sanctuary opened on 30 May 1934, 13 years after Dr MacKenzie was granted 70 acres of land to study native fauna for medical research.

The venue has grown significantly since that time, and millions of visitors from home and abroad have passed through the gates to see the flocks of native animals in their enclosures.

Healesville Sanctuary director Glen Holland said that many people in Australia and internationally had an emotional connection to the place and the animals.

Mr Holland said this connection became most evident after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, which saw the sanctuary and the town under direct threat, and the first-ever evacuation of the animals.

“Messages of concern flooded in from all over the world - Japan, Sweden ... and the United States of America - along with offers of support and donations, which enabled us to provide the very best of veterinary care to the Australian native wildlife affected by the bushfires,” he said.

Continuing with its initial theme of studying native fauna, the sanctuary has a strong focus on conservation and has run breeding programs for endangered species such as the helmeted honeyeater and the Tas-

For some, particularly those who work side-by-side with the animals, the residents of the sanctuary are as close as family.

Mr Holland said the birthday was an occasion to celebrate the sanctuary’s journey over the last 80 years and the people who have cared for the animals over that time.

“Our birthday is a chance to thank all staff and volunteers, our fantastic Zoos Victoria and the broader community for their

efforts in creating this exceptional place, he said.”

On Saturday 31 May and Sunday 1 June, anyone turning 80 years old this year, born in 1980 or celebrating their birthday over the weekend will receive free entry to the sanctuary.

Celebrations will also be taking place as part of Reconciliation Week, with boomerang throwing, face-painting, bush tucker and animal encounters.

By JESSE GRAHAM A BELOVED Healesville High School teacher received a heartwarming gift from her students last week when a cancer fundraiser donation brought her to tears.

Sue Contarino, who is also known as Sue Tanner, was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer last year.

She was given $1500 from students at Healesville High School in an assembly on Friday 23 May after students banded together to run a fundraiser at the school on 4 April to raise money for Ms Contarino’s medical bills.

Accompanying the donation was a gift from the students and LOTE teacher Ashleigh Coleman - 1000 paper cranes, linked together.

Ms Coleman explained that in Japanese mythology, creating 1000 origami cranes is said to grant a person eternal good luck and one wish.

She said that the students had wanted to create the cranes for the teacher.

An emotional Ms Contarino took the podium and thanked the school and the students for their efforts in raising the money, which will go towards outstanding bills.

She told the massed students that she didn’t want to take the donation quietly, and wanted to share the story of the “righthand” blow of her cancer diagnosis, and of the “left-hand blow” of the news of the death of her nephew Josh Matthews.

“I want to encourage you - I want to say to you that, no mat-

ter what you’re going through in your life, you can get through it,” Ms Contarino said.

She urged the students to keep friends and family that they trust and that they can rely on for when things get tough, and that, though they may earn battle scars through their life, they can make it through.

Showing her “battle scar” to the students, Ms Contarino removed her hat and revealed her hairless head, to roaring applause from the crowd.

In finishing her speech, Ms Contarino said she was now in remission, with an 80 per cent chance of survival, and that she would return to the school to teach.

“I love you guys. I’m coming back. I’m coming back!”

By MELISSA MEEHAN IT changed a good man, father and husband into a monster.

Normally mellow and laidback, the husband of Karen (not her real name) turned into someone she no longer recognised when he started using ice.

At first the signs were slight.

He became restless and had more energy, but soon she noticed that the bank accounts were empty and he became more frantic.

“I didn’t know he was using at the start, but noticed he wasn’t quite himself,” Karen said.

“Then I found myself standing at the supermarket checkout, more than once, with the card declining and realised we had no money for food, despite thinking we had up to $500 in the account.

“From there it was a downward slope.”

When she finally found out about his addiction, the mother of three said she couldn’t believe it.

“I didn’t think that kind of stuff was done in the Yarra Ranges, you associate it more with city life,” she said.“But he’d made new friends, and obviously this was something they did together.”

She said his behaviour soon became so frantic and aggressive that the kids would hide from him when he came home.

“He never hit me, but he became so violent,” she said.“The kids were scared, I was scared - we just didn’t know what he would do next.”

She said he became someone she no longer knew.

“I would look into his eyes, and see a completely different person,” she said.

“He frightened me, and even more scary, was how quickly it all happened.”

Her husband became so suspicious and paranoid that he started carrying a knife.

While he never used it to threaten her or the kids, Karen said that was a sign that he was no longer the man she married.

“I made the decision to leave him,” she said.

“The kids were my priority, and I was scared that he could hurt them in one of his rages.

“He had the strength of 10 men and if something happened I wouldn’t be able to stop him.”

Now separated, Karen looks back on those hard days with tears in her eyes.

“It was a very dark time for me,” she said.

“To see someone I loved completely change in front of my eyes and become someone so dangerous really affected me.

“Not to mention the kids.”

Now, her husband has stopped using the drug, moved out of the area and has rebuilt his relationship with his children.

“Yes, there is a relationship now,” she said.

“But some things you can’t repair and the kids still remember who he became and how he was.

“It’s a tough thing to go through and they are still affected by it.”

A DANGEROUS kick to the head resulted in a local paramedic needing CT scans, after she was brutally attacked by an ice user as she transported him to hospital.

The man was coming down from ice, and as paramedics arrived the man was in a relaxed state.

They sat him down, and as they spoke to the triage nurse he became aggravated before planting the kick, which could have been fatal.

Luckily the paramedic wasn’t fatally injured, but it’s a frightening example of the day to day dangers faced by emergency crews called to events where ice is involved.

Acting Team Manager at Ambulance Victoria branches in Emerald and Belgrave, Fida Masri said the above incident, while rare, showed the dangers of the job.

“That paramedic was lucky she wasn’t seriously injured in the end,” she said.

“But it depicts the violent and aggressive nature of people on ice.”

Ms Masri said it was important that people understood that ice was no longer a party drug, and said it was infiltrating the suburbs and country towns at an alarming rate.

“Paramedics are reporting an increase and spike in ambulance callouts to people affected by crystal methamphetamine,” she said.

“What is hard for us is that we think we’re being called out to a heroin overdose, unaware they’ve also taken ice, we’re already on alert but we treat them and then they wake in a psychotic rage.

“It can be a dangerous turn of events, heroin users can be agres-

sive, but ice takes it to a whole new level.”

She said with ice, users could often go from zero to 1000 in a matter of minutes, so they took heroin to slow down the effects and come down.

“It’s not documented, but anecdotally we’re seeing an increase of polypharmacy drugs,” she said.

“It just means that often, we’re not sure what we are dealing with.”

Ms Masri said that often users could present as being OK and quite calm, but then have moments of rage.

“I’ve been on the scene with five paramedics, six to seven police having to help with one patient,” she said.

“They seem to get the strength of 10 men, in a frenzied psychotic episode.

“The OC foam doesn’t even affect them.”

The medical risks are high, too, with users often at threat of heart attacks or strokes because of increased heart rate and blood pressure.

It’s all a world many in the community wouldn’t see or understand.

But for those affected by addiction to the violent drug, it’s hell.

“I often think about a young kid that overdosed at home one night,” she said.

“His mother was beside herself, crying and screaming - she worked herself up so much we needed to take her to hospital for chest pains.

“And I thought to myself, why would anyone do this to their families?

“But I guess, when they are hooked they don’t care about anything else other than their next hit.”

NATIONAL

■ 6.8 per cent of Australians aged 12 years and older have used meth/amphetamines at some stage in their life.

■ 2 per cent have used meth/ amphetamines in the previous 12 months.

VICTORIA ■ In metropolitan Melbourne there was an 88 per cent increase in the number of attendances for crystal methamphetamine between 2011-’12 and 2012-’13, up to an average of three per day.

Hospitals see the effects of the drugs

By REBECCA BILLS LOCAL hospitals are also copping the brunt of ice-related side-effects.

Emergency Department Associate Nurse Unit Manager at the Angliss Hospital, Sue Brown, said there had been a big increase of ice-induced incidents in the area.

“What people are taking is not always clean,” she said.

“There has been at least twice as many, if not four times as many people coming through the emergency ward over the last few years with ages varying from 18 to 30 in relation to the drug.

“It’s a big increase and often they haven’t had a large amount of the drug - that is an effect of it not being pure.”

Ms Brown said patients who were admitted were often very aggressive and became quite unreasonable with what they wanted.

It could take up to four to six days for them to come down.

What is ice?

ICE is a stimulant drug, which means it speeds up the messages travelling between the brain and the body.

It is a type of methamphetamine, which is generally stronger, more addictive and has more harmful side effects than the powdered form known as speed. Ice usually comes as a white or brownish crystal-like powder, with a strong smell and bitter taste.

It can also come in the form of sheets of clear crystals.

Other names include crystal meth, shabu, crystal, glass, and shard.

How is it used?

Ice is generally smoked or injected and the effects can be felt immediately. It can also be swallowed or snorted; the effects take around 30 minutes to feel if it’s used in this way.

There is no safe level of drug use. Use of any drug always carries some risk.

Deadly to health

By MELISSA MEEHAN HEART attacks, strokes and other serious illnesses can be triggered by the use of crystal methamphetamine.

Crystal methamphetamine, more commonly known as ice, related ambulance attendances are on the rise across Victoria, including the Yarra Ranges according to a recently released report

by Turning Point.

While the figures locally aren’t as high as other areas, emergency services personnel say the problem is much more widespread as the figures only show incidences where an ambulance was called.

Turning Point clinical director Doctor Matt Frei said the recent report on the alarming rise in ambulance call-outs meant there were, without doubt, many more taking the drug that were not necessarily caught up in the statistics.

But he said users faced serious medical problems caused by the drug.

“It interferes with brain chemistry and is from the stimulant family,” he said.

“It’s also highly addictive - so a recipe for trouble.”

Dr Frei said the drug had been around for a long time, decades in fact, and was often prescribed for weight loss, fatigue and depression back in the 1950s.

“It became apparent, the problems associated with taking the drug - it was addictive and caused several significant side effects,” he said.

“Then it became a criminal market.”

He said that a range of people used ice, from young teenagers to 50-year-old women.

But it seemed to be the choice of younger drug takers.

“From our research you would say the median age of users is about 27 years old,” he said.

“But of course, like anything else there are people on either side of that spectrum.”

The ability to smoke it makes ice more socially acceptable, according to Dr Frei.

“It has an advantage over heroin because it can be smoked as well as injected,” he said.

“People don’t like the idea of becoming a ‘junkie’ with needles in their arms, so they smoke it,

not realising it’s just as dangerous.”

Sleepness nights, violent behaviour and paranoia are all effects of the drug, and Dr Frei has seen his fair share of symptoms in emergency hospital wards.

“We have some people coming in, needing to be held down by police, paramedics, psych ward staff and security staff,” he said.

“And these guys are presenting with mental health issues, sores, and sometimes cardiac events.”

He said the latest report came from a number of paramedics and doctors noticing a trend.

“Hopefully this report makes the people in charge understand what is happening out on the streets,” he said.

“It’s a trend that we need to put more effort into.”

Ice is not a myth, urban or otherwise

By KATH GANNAWAY AND JESSE GRAHAM THE Mail’s day-to-day contact with police on the beat in the Yarra Valley backs up concerns that ice is not an urban problem, and it’s not an urban myth either.

Police such as Kevin Largue at Yarra Junction openly state: “Ice is an increasing problem and it’s in every part of society, not just down in the suburbs,” he said.

They see it in the family violence call-outs and say they know it’s a factor because they’re told it is by the people they’re dealing with in those situations.

“People who would not have had a tendency (to do drugs) are cropping up. We are seeing people who are cleanskins, never been in trouble before, doing very serious assaults.”

It’s a revelation to most of the community who picture drug users as young people, losers and people generally on the thin edge of society.

“We’re seeing otherwise stable people - married, a job, young chil-

dren, a mortage - the whole deal and both are addicted to ice and falling apart at the seams.”

Yarra Glen Police Sergeant and acting Healesville Sergeant Richard Coulson said that ice was a trending issue in the area, and police were still finding appropriate ways of dealing with the problem.

“We’re trying to adopt strategies and ways to deal with situations as they come to hand,” he said.

Other police tell the same story and there’s a level of concern not only about the growing burden of

ice crime on their work, but on what it means for the people whose lives are affected, as users, colleagues, family ... friends.

Ask them why the general public is not aware of what’s happening and they will tell you the stereotypical portrait of users as skinny 18-yearolds with sores all over their face is not typical; it happens and it’s tragic, but after years of use.

They talk of tradesmen in their late thirties and forties, uni students, and professionals; people in all socio-economic groups.

Then there are the ones who turn to ice as a way of getting out of their own financial problems, some funding their own use, but often just because they can make big money from a commodity that is increasing in demand and is highly addictive.

Sgt Coulson said that Healesville had more ice-related incidents compared to Yarra Glen, but said it was an issue for the whole of the state, not just the leafy towns in the outer east.

He said that drug users had

variations in their behaviour, which makes tackling the problem more difficult for officers, who may not know how people will react to situations.

And the figures they talk about are staggering.

Drug offences recorded in the Yarra Ranges dropped 7.1 per cent between 2012 and 2013, with 374 offences falling to 364 in the respective years.

However, assault charges - including family violence assaults - rose 11.2 per cent over the same time period.

For a problem that police say is behind a lot of offending, including family violence, police say they need people to stand up and help them.

IT’S an addiction that takes hold, turning lawabiding citizens into crazed criminals desperate to find their next hit.

While the police statistics don’t yet show it, local police anecdotally say they have noticed an increase in drug-related crime in the region.

Many blame the increase on ice use, something that has generally been described as a city drug.

But now it’s evident that the drug is no longer just a party drug and is creeping its way into rural areas.

After speaking to local police on the issue off the record, the Mail contacted Acting Detective Sergeant Mick Duke from the Croydon Divisional Tasking Unit.

His team’s role is to stop the scourge spreading through the region and has been at the forefront of raids on clandestine labs in and around the Yarra Ranges.

For them, in a perfect world they could execute a warrant every day of the week.

For the community, in a perfect world there would be no need for the warrant.

“There is no doubt ice use is more prevalent these days,” Acting Det Sgt Duke said.

“And it’s on the increase, and drug-related crime is linked to that.”

Acting Det Sgt Duke said once users became hooked on ice, their one focus in life was to find their next hit.

“It’s fairly expensive compared to other drugs,” he said.

“So they start off paying for it out of their normal wages, then they need more and more so start stealing from family and then it just escalates from there.”

He said a number of users ended up trafficking the drug just to pay for their own habit.

“They start depending on the drug at desperate levels, some start with petty crime, others more serious,” he said.

“We have already seen a link to an increase in drug-related crimes like family violence and aggravated assaults.”

With the increased use of ice, comes frantic paranoia.

The drug often turns meek and mild personalities into raging lunatics.

Not only do users describe feeling like they have the strength of 10 men when they take it, coming down from the drug means they often don’t sleep for days.

“In the past we’ve been able to execute search warrants in early morning raids,” Acting Det Sgt Duke said.

“But now, it’s not unusual for us to go to a house at 4am to find everyone sitting up in the lounge room taking a hit of the pipe.

“And these labs aren’t just a one-off - in a perfect world we could execute a warrant every day of the week in our division.”

It’s a dangerous job for the Croydon DTU, with paranoid users and cooks arming themselves to protect their stash.

Often they need to call in help from the city.

“We have to be careful about who, where, when and what we do,” he said.

“It has to be a safe working environment for my team. It needs careful planning and innovative techniques.

“But we are determined to clean up the streets.”

Dough snap’s cute portrait

But have you ever had a photograph taken with dough on your head?

TarraWarra Museum of Art (TWMA) will be hosting a free Dough Portrait Day on Sunday 1 June for exactly that - with internationally renowned artist Søren Dahlgaard setting up unique portraits on the day.

The photo shoot entails people posing as if for a regular photograph, only with huge lumps of dough placed over their heads, obscuring their faces.

Dahlgaard will be taking photos of visitors covered in dough from 11am3pm on the day, and photographs from the event will be used for the upcoming biennial at the museum, called Whisper in my Mask.

The biennial, which runs from 16 August to 16 November, explores the theme of masking, secrets and hidden narratives - such as psychological states.

It will be curated by Natalie King and Djon Mundine, and many Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists have been selected to display their work as part of the event.

GODZILLA, directed by Gareth Edwards, is a terrific monster movie in which just enough is perfect.

Lieutenant Ford Brody (Aaron TaylorJohnson) and his family find themselves caught up in a devastating conflict between ancient monsters.

Mutos, macabre creatures that feed on radiation, are threatening the safety of humanity, and the reptilian titan Godzilla may be the only thing that can defeat them.

Godzilla hits the perfect note in almost every aspect.

The film has just enough fanciful elements in the premise without being corny, and is dark and compelling instead.

The characters are established and developed just enough for us to like and invest ourselves in them, but without robbing the

spotlight from the monsters.

Godzilla gets just enough screentime in the first and second acts to generate eager anticipation (in a Jaws-like strategy of less is more), and so avoids overexposure.

The performances are outstanding especially from Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe and Elizabeth Olsen. The pacing is excellent, the effects and creature design are amazing and the final epic battle between Godzilla and the Mutos is glorious.

Godzilla is also an incredibly effective disaster movie, and has an impressive scope and commitment to worldbuilding.

This is a real treat for fans of the Godzilla franchise, and for everyone else.

Godzilla is an enthralling, superbly made experience.

Like the proverbial third bowl of porridge, Godzilla is just right.

Choice coffee goes down well WINTER is coming.The air is getting colder and the weather, getting wetter - what better way to escape from the dreary weather than with a warm cup of coffee?

When it comes to getting a quality cuppa, there are numerous different varieties and flavours on offer, for those with different taste.

Chocolate lovers can indulge in a mocha, which combines two classic beverages - hot chocolate and coffee, while those wanting a sharper taste (while still sating their sweet tooth) can opt to have a frothy cappuccino.

Those after a milkier drink

will find their poison-ofchoice in a steaming hot latte, or perhaps a froth-free flat white.

For a drink full of flavour, albeit with a bit of bite, an espresso is a quick way to get a solid caffeine fix.

There are a number of ways to check if a coffee is perfectly made, but one of the key features of a good cup is properly-textured milk.

A drink with well-textured milk will have froth, but it should be smooth and interwoven with the milk, and not end up as a hunk of bubbles on top of the drink.

As for temperature, a good

serving temperature for your favourite brew should be around 70 degrees - the drink should be cool enough to sip right away, but should still be hot enough to enjoy for a few minutes before going cold.

A lot of the rest comes down to taste - how strong the drink is, how much sugar is added is all down to individual tastes and tolerances, and it is good to experiment to find what works best.

With autumn on the verge of shifting to winter, there is no better time to indulge in a warm drink while escaping the bleak weather and pouring rain.

Top do exudes harmony

By KATH GANNAWAY COMING up with just three highlights of the Warburton Harmony Festival was a tall order for organiser Keith Simons.

The four-day festival from 16 to 19 May was packed with events that celebrated many levels of community, spirituality and culture, including local Indigenous culture, through the experiences of internationally renown speakers, music, dance, film, workshops and food.

“Three highlights for me were the dialogues with Uncle Bob Randall, Mahomad Abdalla and Alexander Shaia, the Interfaith Forum and the Flamenco performances on the Sunday evening,” Mr Simons said.

But, he added “There were so many others.”

Mr Simons said the festival was rated by many of the invited speakers and other guests as the best festival or event they had ever been to and certainly the vibe around Warburton over the festival long weekend was exciting and colourful.

He said the feedback from the public had also been almost universally positive.

“Some have said it was the best festival so far,” Mr Simons said.

Wurundjeri woman Brooke Collins shared local Indigenous culture with Denis Lugor from Ausudan Education Foundation and friend Victor Ohiaegbunam.

Doug gets life membership

By KATH GANNAWAY LITTLE Yarra Fire Brigade member Frank ‘Doug’ Cole was presented with Life Membership of the Victorian CFA at the brigade’s annual general meeting on 12 May. Mr Cole’s involvement with the CFA began as a teenager.

“Dad (Frank Cole) and I both joined the brigade around 1958. I would have been 16 at the time, and Don Parkinson, who had just become captain of the Little Yarra Fire Brigade came around and asked us if we would become members,” he recalled.

Frank agreed to help out in an emergency, which Doug said was how it worked back then.

“I was working out in the bush, and if there was a fire I would turn out as a volunteer firefighter,” he said.

Brigade captain Les Hart paid tribute to Mr Cole’s contribution over the years, saying he had been an invaluable active member, including four years as captain, and continued to be a valuable resource.

“His local knowledge is invaluable, especially around Hoddles Creek and Bunyip areas.

“If you want to know something

about a specific area, Doug is the person you talk to,” he said.

Service awards were also presented on the night with Mr Cole recognised for 45 years’ service to the brigade with the CFA 45 Year Medal.

Mr Hart, who has been captain for six years received his CFA 15 Year Medal, Clive Halls received the CFA 30 Year Medal and Nikki Armstrong, Niall McLaughlin and Vesna Bulut received the CFA 5 Year Certificates.

Visitors enjoy the challenge

By LESLEY RUNDLE LAST Saturday the Marysville golfers hosted an event promoted by Golf Victoria and in glorious sunshine the visitors and members played a mixed 4BBB stableford.

Visiting golfers represented Woodlands Golf Club, Victoria Golf Club, Bendigo Golf Club and players from the Bendigo Bank.

The visitors were impressed with the golf course and many promised to return and suggested the Marysville Challenge become an annual event.

The winning combination was Keith McClaine from Marysville and Bev Manallack from Woodlands with an excellent 48 stableford points.

The runners up were Bendigo Bank players Matt White and Brock Pinner with 46 points.

The nearest the pins were won by Liz Amos, Brock Pinner and Ray Jones.

Thanks to Steve Manallack from Woodlands and Ken Whittingham, Nick Williamson and Adam Littlejohn from Marysville for assisting with the organisation of the event on Saturday.

Members and visitors also wish to thank Rob Christie, Kellan Fiske and the volunteers for preparing the course which looked stunning in the autumn sunshine.

On Thursday the nine holers played stableford on the back nine holes.

The winner was Geoff Ferguson with 17 points followed by John Moore with 14 points.

Roger Thomas won the nearest the pin event on the 18th hole.

On Thursday six ladies will travel to Strathbogie to play in their annual Bowl.

The finishing touches are taking place to the new clubhouse and the official handover will be within the next two weeks.

Members are looking forward to moving in to the beautiful new facility and sharing it with the local community and visitors from far afield.

Next Saturday the men will play a stableford round and the ladies will play a stableford round for the second round of the silver spoon.

All golfers are welcome to join the Marysville members in any of the weekly competitions.

Valley back in top 10 INTERLEAGUE 2014 THE Yarra Valley Mountain District Community Bank Football Netball League Senior interleague team played host to the Mallee Football League on the weekend.

The Yarra Valley ran out the comfortable winner and has put itself back in the top 10 and by all other results over the weekend it looks like it will be a trip to take on Gippsland Football League in 2015.

SENIORS Conditions were good for football.

The ground was a bit soft in spots due to the rain that fell on Friday but it had no bearing on the standard of football that was played.

Yarra Valley came out strongly and got the jump and used the ball far more effectively and played the ground and its conditions well.

A seven goal quarter of which five belonged to Michael Fowkes (Wandin) saw the Yarra Valley take a comfortable lead at the first break by 38 points.

The Mallee fought back in the second and kicked five goals but the strength of the running players like Luke McKenna (Emerald), Nick Keegan (Olinda) and Rhys Chapman (Thornton Eildon) were always going to make it tough.

The lead was extended to 43 points at the major break.

The dual spearheads up forward for the Yarra Valley in Michael Fowkes (Wandin) and Daniel Waters (Upwey Tecoma) turned out to be a huge headache for the Mallee in the third and they were well supported by the small forwards in Daniel Hurley (Yarra Glen), Jim Messis (Wandin) and Jarrod Bayliss

(Wandin).

The Yarra Valley held the Mallee to one goal in the third while it managed to kick 5.5.

The result ended up being a runaway win for the Yarra Valley by a resounding 107 points.

Taking out the AFL VIC Country (Best on Ground Medals) were Michael Fowkes for the Yarra Valley and Coleman Schache for the Mallee.

Shane Williams was voted by his peers as best on ground for the Yarra Valley.
