But Ms Latham, 44, says she is worried about the future of the Warwick TAFE campus and fears the cutbacks in government subsidies could close the campus by the end of the year. She said Warwick and Stanthorpe residents were having the “wool pulled over their eyes” and that the campuses were in the government’s firing line.

“I recently read in the Free Times (May 8, page 3) that there had been ‘no redundancies in the past three months’ at the (Warwick) TAFE, according to TAFE director Trevor Schwenke,” she said.

“This is just not true. I have witnessed several redundancies including four employees paid out or laid off last Thursday, May 8, including one teacher and a head chef.”

Ms Latham said the rumours spreading across the town about the TAFE’s uncertain future were adding fuel to the fire and greater transparency was needed to ensure student confidence.

She called on members of the community to rally behind efforts to save the TAFE and stop the shift of courses online.

“The community needs to be standing up for our TAFE campuses or risk having them shut down,” she said.

YOUR article (page 4, 17 April) described the euphoria and dedication of locals in Tenterfield to the clean-up of the main street in Tenterfield.

What your article did not mention is that rural sections of the shire lost their shares for the financial year of a large portion of the grant of Roads to Recovery for the year and the full amount of the Heritage Grant for the year; so these improvements could be carried out.

My Ward A pays as much in rates as the town wards pay individually; and I can’t even get a couple of tables and chairs on the headwaters of the Clarence River and near the world-famous Rivertree chimney. The area is beautiful and historic. My two local councillors have a lot to answer for. I believe our Tenterfield Council Manager gave herself a sizeable increase in salary recently.

DAILY we hear lies about the diesel fuel “subsidy” to farmers and miners.

The tax on diesel fuel was introduced many years ago as a sensible road usage fee to help fund public roads.

Naturally diesel-powered vehicles and equipment that do not run on public roads are exempt from the diesel road tax.

The diesel tractors hauling planters, ploughs, hay-balers and harvesters are not running on public roads; neither are the diesel shovels, scrapers and trucks working on mining leases, nor the diesel trawlers catching prawns and fish, nor the diesel engines pumping water or generating electricity. None of these producers are receiving any diesel subsidy and none should suddenly be forced to pay a road usage tax (except on any vehicles using public roads).

The clamour by Green propagandists for a new tax on diesel is just an extension of their ongoing attacks on primary producers.

And why should bio-diesel and ethanol used on public roads gain exemptions - don’t ethanol powered vehicles also wear out roads?

Cut the perks IT MAY not be a lot of money in the overall spending of the Federal Government but the perks given to ex-Members of Parliament are far more generous than what is warranted.

The high-flyers, like ex-Prime Ministers, and cabinet members receive a lot of money in pensions and other entitlements for the rest of their lives, after serving a few short years in Parliament. PM Tony has said that the upcoming budget will take into consideration these perks and that there WILL be changes.

Well, we will have to wait and see. Can we trust him to keep his word? He’s a politician after all and I’m sure he has his eye on his own retirement, and the perks are something to be lusted after.

The public must keep up the pressure on PM Tony to do something about the benefits the exparliamentarians receive. It is not good enough to attack the aged and vulnerable as a means of reducing the deficit. There are many areas that need expenditure pruning.

The upcoming budget should be very interesting.

Lively time THE Federal Budget will liven up all things political quite soon. However who will be able to tune in to hear the “broken promises” lament emanate from the Opposition benches as word by word is pulled apart to prove the opposition can read!

This writer is not at all happy with politics circa 2014, as day after day one commission of inquiry or another, on radio or newspaper startles the trust of voters with yet another politician seemingly in the dock.

However, there is one most worrying state of affairs that really is in this writer’s mind - what will be sold off to lower debt? For when the next hopeless government goes down there will be nothing left to sell! I have a list of 15 manufacturing industries that have vanished since 1960 in Australia. Where will our youth find their futures, where will our government find taxes without workers? Something must be wrong with those politicians who for years have let this country down, or has governance become beyond them?

Drink-drive blitz STANTHORPE Police nabbed eight drink-drivers in the past week as the backpacker silly season gets underway.

Among those caught were four tourists in a single night and one local male who blew 0.279 per cent.

Stanthorpe Police Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said police were dealing with an increase in drunken tourists, as well as locals, getting behind the wheel.

“It can be difficult to get the message across to visitors that struggle with English and during these busy backpacker seasons we are seeing an increase in drink-drivers,” he said.

Snr Sgt Ireland said ignorance was no excuse and drink-driving would not be tolerated.

“Our officers take drinkdriving very seriously and random breath tests can happen anywhere anytime,” he said.

The first driver nabbed was on Monday May 5, in Applethorpe, at 9pm. Police were attending a domestic disturbance when a local 32-yearold female pulled up outside the property. Police breathtested the woman and she blew 0.097 per cent.

The second driver nabbed was on Monday May 5, on the New England Highway at Applethorpe, at 9.30pm. A 21-year-old male tourist blew

0.097 per cent.

A 47-year-old female blew 0.154 per cent in Stanthorpe on Wednesday May 7. The woman was local to Stanthorpe.

Police pulled over a 31-year-old tourist in the Stanthorpe CBD at 12.30am on Saturday May 11. The man blew 0.125 per cent.

A second tourist was pulled over at High Street, in Stanthorpe, at 1.40am on 11 May. The 27-year-old blew 0.062 per cent.

A third tourist was nabbed again on High Street, at 2.05am on 11 May. The 23-year-old male blew 0.109 per cent.

On Sunday morning at

around 2.50am, police were called to a single-vehicle traffic crash on Furness Road, Broadwater, where a vehicle had come to rest in a table drain after leaving the road.

The driver of the vehicle, a 24-year-old local man, was found uninjured, however he was highly intoxicated at the scene, recording 0.279 per cent.

A further drink-driver was pulled over on High Street, at 4.30pm on Sunday 11 May. The 65-year-old local man blew 0.096.

Police charged those eight drivers with drink-driving and they were scheduled to appear before the Stanthorpe Magistrate this month.

IT’S not every day your wife and daughter tell you to go jump off a building - but it’s all in a day’s work for Southern Downs man Eugene Thompson.

Eugene is an abseiling instructor so he’s no stranger to leaping off structures, but on Saturday 17 May he will take his biggest leap of faith ever travelling down 10 Eagle Street in Brisbane - a height of 140 metres.

It’s all part of the 36 Floors Challenge - a fundraiser for the Queensland programs for the Save The Children Australia organisation.

“I have been teaching abseiling since 1995 and 110 metres was my previous record,” he said.

“But my wife and my daughter dobbed me in. Vicky (his wife) asked

Eugene said while he isn’t really scared of heights he would have to “psych myself into it”.

“You just don’t give yourself time to think about it!” he said.

“And it’s for a good cause.”

So is he expecting it to be fun?

“Half way down I’ll probably really enjoy it,” he said.

“Not at the top though,” he added laughing.

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council is under strict instructions to tighten its belt and find new sources of State or Federal funding for some local services, as the council’s 2014/15 budget looms.

However, as both State and Federal governments continue to slash spending, the mounting pressure could result in the loss of some services or a possible rate rise.

Southern Downs Regional Council’s business and community services director David Tuxford said council officers were currently working on building the 2014/15 budget and all staff members were busy analysing costs.

WARWICK MacDonald’s staff members and local police have been praised for their quick response to a hair-raising hold-up recently.

Police allege that about 4am on Sunday 11 May, a 19-yearold man approached the drivethrough window of the Albion Street business on foot.

The man allegedly produced a broken glass bottle and demanded cash from the staff.

The employees refused the man’s demands and alerted police who responded to the call within five minutes, Warwick MacDonald’s operations manager Daine Reid said.

“A massive thank you needs to go out to the Warwick Police for

responding so quickly,” Mr Reid said.

Officers arrested the man at the scene.

Staff were also praised for their quick thinking during the ordeal.

The 19-year-old Warwick man will face charges including one count each of attempted armed robbery and entering a premise with intent.

He was due to appear in the Warwick Magistrates’ Court on Monday, instead his trial will take place in Toowoomba Magistrates’ Court later this month.

Cash crisis at impasse

By JONATHON HOWARD TENTERFIELD Shire Council has been accused of failing ratepayers as the shire falls further into a financial crisis, according to Tenterfield Progress Association (TPA) member Robert Walker.

Mr Walker has followed the council’s financial issues for years and has made several attempts to address council as both a concerned ratepayer and TPA member.

All attempts by Mr Walker to speak with Tenterfield Shire Council, or address the council, have been denied and his concerns have largely gone unheard. He accuses the council of failing in the areas of financial management as well as inciting a sense of community “bewilderment” and “uncertainty”.

The Free Times put several questions to Mr Walker to clearly and publicly convey his thoughts on the matter. These questions have also been sent to Tenterfield Shire Council general manager Lotta Jackson, and her responses will be provided to readers next week.

What issues do you feel need to be raised within the Tenterfield Shire Council?

TRANSPARENCY and Communication. Open, honest and frank discussion with council does not occur. I have suggested, on a number of occasions, including a publicised offer to have a conciliatory meeting between Tenterfield Progress Association (TPA) and councillors and/or the general manager Lotta Jackson, but our offer was not entertained. Two years ago, I wrote to the general manager suggesting a one-on-one meeting to explore common ground and create a new medium for the exchange of ideas but it was refused. The continuing use of the press to get points aired is not the professional way, but it is proving the only way.

What questions do you plan asking the council when you take the floor at the next meeting (21 May)?

ASSUMING my written request is approved, and this is not a given, the most important task will be to convince council that we, TPA, are not the enemy. Instead, we are driven by a desire to see Tenterfield reach its full potential and, to maintain and grow prosperity. We are not anti-council.

We recognise we are all on the same fragile boat.

If it sinks we all go down, why would we want that?

What concerns do you hold for Councillor Blair Maxwell, during his investigation for misconduct?

WELL the result of this botched and frivolous matter says it all. The general manager was admonished by her own investigator, paid for by ratepayers, on five of the six charges she brought.

Maxwell was found wanting in only two charges and was ordered to seek counselling. It would be justice if Ms Jackson paid all costs from her own personal funds. The other matter of financial waste was Mr Maxwell’s motor sport arena.

The GM has racked up a bill of approx $150,000 (of ratepayer money) on this extraordinarily long case. The magistrate who heard the case admonished Ms Jackson for not sitting down and nego-

tiating with the plaintiff. Let me add that it is on all councillors for not applying the brakes on this matter two years ago.

Please describe the situation currently in Tenterfield Council and where you feel it’s going wrong?

THAT is an easy one. It is void of democracy. The councillors have allowed the general manager to usurp their power and the authority that voters gave them. When I attend meetings there is debate but the resulting votes are along predictable lines. Another example is the proposed purchase of corporate business software. Is this software really a “must have priority” at a time of uncertainty and low or negative cash reserves. Why the hurry? This purchase, if implemented, must be seen by the community as an enhancement to efficiency. It must be evaluated prior to commitment to quantify the savings it will return. In other words a “cost benefit analysis”. Further, the proposed council closed meetings to discuss this expenditure will attract suspicion. Is it really necessary to close off the people that will be asked to pay for it? The cost may well be a six-figure sum. How does council reconcile this expense at this time?

What areas has council failed or succeeded?

FAILURE: Finance and budgeting. It was revealed at the last council meeting that council bank accounts were in deficit but the meeting just went on. No debate, questions or resolutions taken. The point was also made that “what do we do in the event we do not get the full rate rise in June?” It appears there is no plan “B”. As further evidence of poor or bad management or governance, our land value has fallen the most of all of NSW shires. We have been identified by a national government task force to be placed 531st of the 560 councils Australia-wide in the category of “business expertise”. We are also rated as a “low socio-economic area”. Ten years ago we were the most prosperous shire in NSW. Success: perhaps the main street project. However, this is severely diluted due to the ensuing financial crisis we now face.

What is the general view of Tenterfield Shire Council within the community?

BEWILDERMENT, helplessness and disappointment. These are some of the words that come to mind. Forget Ms Jackson’s assurances that we are all happy with the main street plan. The project was stated to be complete in eight weeks. We are now in week 23. I have asked for a summary of obvious cost overruns (perhaps this has contributed to the bank account “deficit”) but I received a very convoluted reply which did not address the question. TPA suggested over a year ago that signs be displayed so tourists would know where to park, particularly during the Rouse Street works. Shops are still suffering due to loss of car spaces and no “where to park signs”.

Globe-trotter on luxury cruise

BY Jonathon Howard BORED and unable to work daily on his cattle property at the age of 95, Killarney resident, Bruce Mackenzie, decided it was again time to travel the world in April this year with a third trip to India.

On a luxury Seadream cruise starting from Singapore with only 65 passengers and 100 crew, Mr Mackenzie sailed across the beautiful navy blue Indian Ocean for an adventure through Thailand, Malaysia, the Andaman Islands, Sri Lanka and India, finishing in Mumbai.

Mr Mackenzie enjoyed his days at sea reading, snoozing and swimming in the pool before heading from ports to see the countryside by taxi and tuk tuk.

“India is crowded, colourful but crumbling,” Bruce said.

“There are still people sleeping in the streets and under trees.”

In Mumbai, with a population of 22 million equal to that of Australia, Mr Mackenzie toured the slums, temples, gardens and markets, the famous Dhobi Ghat public laundry, museums and fine colonial buildings.

“I was treated like royalty at the Prince of Wales Museum,” he said, noting that his visit coincided with the Duke of Cambridge’s tour of Australia.

Mr Mackenzie has had a lifelong interest in aircraft and travel since flying with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith in Sydney as a boy, visiting New Zealand in the 1930s and during active service in New Guinea in World War II. Bruce’s first visit to India was in 1962 with his brother, the late Dr Bill Mackenzie who was lecturing in oral surgery.

Since then, Mr Mackenzie has seen many world icons.

With his late wife, Bruce travelled extensively through the USA and Europe and he has enjoyed many trips to see his family in China, the Middle East and Canada as well as diverse sites from Baghdad to Sweden, Fiji to Portugal, Rio de Janeiro in 2003, the Greek Acropolis and Egyptian Pyramids in 2008 and Moscow’s Red Square in 2011.

Mr Mackenzie has had a long career with his late brother Ferrier in beef cattle grazing, business, retailing, cinema and property management.

Asked if he was going overseas again, Bruce Mackenzie remarked “it is a lot of effort for me and for others, but I have to keep up to date.”

Mr Mackenzie again advocates that we should ‘count our blessings’.

DETECTIVES from the Darling Downs District and Homicide Investigation Unit are continuing their investigations into the death of 24-year-old Goondiwindi woman Alexis Jeffery.

Police are trying to locate a pair of grey and black reef style boots they believe are relevant and will assist with investigations into the murder of Ms Jeffery. The boots in question, also commonly known as irrigation boots, are made from wetsuit type material.

Police have released an image and description of boots they believe are similar in appearance to boots they are trying to locate.

Police consider these boots may have been discarded or disposed of somewhere in the Goondiwindi area around the time of Ms Jeffery’s death. The body of Ms Jeffery was discovered on the banks of the McIntyre River on the morning of 16 March this year.

Day of fashion and fillies

By TANIA PHILLIPS PICNICS, fashion and of course the odd horse or two were the order of the day for the 120th Ergon Energy Warwick, Picnic Races at the Allman Park Race Course, Warwick on Saturday.

“The weather was great - which is the best start we could have had,” Warwick Turf Club Secretary Kristen Doyle said of the colourful event.

“We had more than 500 people in the marquee area alone.

“There were five races on the day and lots of fashions on the field with great prizes on offer.”

Kristen said because it was a BYO event, the picnic races attracted a slightly different clientele to the club’s regular race meetings.

“It was great fun and there was a band after 5pm so people could kick on and dance,” she said.

The club’s next race meeting is the Killarney Club on 28 June and then they will be busy with a race meeting planned for every month until the end of the year.

Power plan crosses the line

By JONATHON HOWARD SOUTHERN Downs’ residents have raised fresh concerns over the need for another power line from Warwick to Stanthorpe, as Ergon Energy hosts yet another public meeting.

An increase in the number of residents purchasing solar panels is taking pressure off the electrical grid and easing power use, according to Queensland Recreation Aircraft Association president Kelvin Hutchinson.

“Logic would make you think if there’s less need for a secondary power line, due to the uptake of solar panels, then why waste money on a new line,”

Mr Hutchinson said.

Other residents have expressed concerns over the selection of the route five corridor when the Community Reference Group, responsible for selecting the route, gained little to no trust from the general public.

Warwick Aerodrome has also entered into the debate with concerns that the route five corridor could interfere with flights or even hinder future expansions of the airfield.

Those affected are calling for a fresh approach to the planning of the line, including a re-assessment of the need and its subsequent location.

Mr Hutchinson said it was an outrage to even consider the line near an airfield.

“The fact is those residents and business living on the route five corridor were never consulted nor was anyone from the Warwick Aerodrome,” he said.

“Ergon really need to go back to the drawing board on this matter and start fresh consultations with route five residents and businesses.”

Ergon had a meeting with representatives of United Land Owner’s Group (ULOG) in Toowoomba on Wednesday 7 May.

Ergon representatives reiterated its commitment to work with ULOG and other groups to review the criteria used by the Community Reference Group as part of its process.

“The priority to make this possible is for Ergon to determine the best option for a line route within the 2km-wide corridor five, which was the recommendation from the CRG,” the Ergon spokesperson said.

“Line route five will be determined and refined from the constraints that have been identified though the constraints assessment of the corridor.

“This line route also will avoid any

areas within the corridor that an independent specialist advises would impact on the Warwick airport now and into the future, taking into consideration airfield regulatory requirements.

“It is only by developing a specific line route that a true comparison can be made with other line routes that have been identified previously as alternatives for providing long-term security of power supply for the Stanthorpe region.

“The analysis to ensure the best solution for the line route will be determined by a review of the CRG’s criteria with representatives of ULOG and other community groups.”

Cowboys show true grit at rodeo WHEN you’re called the Cowboys and you come from Warwick it only makes sense that you use a rodeo as a fundraising event.

In one of those “why didn’t we think of this earlier” moves the Cowboys’ Rugby League Club held their first rodeo at the club’s league grounds on Friday night and according to organiser Scott Keogh of SK Horsemanship the event was a bucking success.

Scott said a crowd of almost 1000 swapped rugby league for rodeo on the Friday night as the football ground turned temporary rodeo arena.

“We had nearly standing room only and the crowd were overwhelming in their

support,” he said.

“This is the first time they have run a rodeo.

I’ve been running some in the area and the club thought they would have a go.”

He said the event, which was just a bit bigger than the usual Friday night raffle would be happening again.

“Definitely - they (the Cowboys’ committee) are ready to go again,” he said.

Scott said the amount raised had yet to be determined but he hoped it would go a long way towards providing the much-needed new watering system at the Cowboys ground.

By TANIA PHILLIPS THE best of British (and the rest of Europe) was on display at the Morgan Park Raceway at Warwick at the weekend for Round 2 of the National British European America Race Series.

The weekend attracted 115 motorcycle riders from around Australia to compete in the BEAR’s event and a round of Historic racing as well.

Organiser Dave Fuller said

there was some exciting racing with a lot of personal bests and lap records.

“Coffs Harbour racer Beau Beaton set a new lap record for Morgan Park on his Ducati 1198. It was the fastest lap ever for the 3km track, going around in 1min 15.9 seconds.

“There were a lot of PBs on the day.” Dave said.

He said it was an exciting day of racing including appearances by Chris Vermeulen and

Gary McCoy two of the legends of the sport.

Dave said the next round of the National BEAR Series will be held at Phillip Island in August while the action returns to Morgan Park on Sunday, 15 June with a European day.

He said the day will be open to anyone who has some bikes and would like to come along and have some coaching and ride in a controlled environment.

THE sound of thundering hooves echoed around the rolling foothills of Killarney at the weekend as 180 players and their horses took to the field for the town’s annual Polocrosse carnival.

Thirty teams made the trek to Killarney for the actionpacked event with some players travelling from as far away as Western Queensland and New South Wales.

The large contingent of spectators at the carnival helped boost the town’s visitor numbers to more than 300.

In a rural town of less than 1000 people, the influx of polocrosse enthusiasts was good for Killarney’s local economy with players and supporters spending money in the local shops, food outlets and pub according to Killarney Polocrosse Club Secretary Kerri-Ann Lamb.

Kerri-Ann said the economic boost was just one of the reasons Killarney Polocrosse Club, despite having no playing members this year, continues with the tradition of their annual carnival.

“This year is the second year since the club was formed that we have had no playing members but the passion is still alive and the annual carnival is always on the calendar,” she said.

The event also served as a good training event for the Australian Titles to be held in early July with several Queensland representatives making the trip.

Although neither side fielded their normal A Grade teams due to some State Representative players not competing and some resting their Nationals nominated horses, the battle between the teams was hard fought. On this occasion, in a reversal from last year’s A Grade final, Warwick 1 came up victorious, beating Tansey 1 by 13 goals. The final score was 20 to 7.

This weekend, the polocrosse action will take place at Cunningham Polocrosse Club.

Play at Cunningham Polocrosse Carnival will start at 8am on both days at 1239 Bony Mountain Road, via Warwick.

What’s On Art of the landscape THE well-respected members of the Warwick Artists Group will present their new exhibition Rural Living at Warwick Art Gallery from Thursday 15 May. For the first time the painters and the textile artists will combine their work for this stunning exhibition that celebrates rural life in 2014.

Textile artisans from the group have worked for six months to complete a beautiful quilt for that will be raffled during the exhibition. The raffle proceeds will go towards the development of art practice in this community by supporting a wearable fashion parade competition in November. Part of the proceeds will be donated the Warwick Women’s Shelter.

The Rural Living exhibition will be at the Warwick Art Gallery from 15 May to 6 July.

The event will be held at Tenterfield Showground from 3.30pm and carnival entertainment and live music, a huge bonfire culminating in cho-

reographed pyrotechnics from 7.30pm.

Organiser Rod Stanford said the event was a chance to turn back the clock to the oldfashioned “cracker nights” that many of us enjoyed as kids (only a lot safer).

“The concept of Cracker Night was borne out of a desire to raise the profile of our club

in Tenterfield with a signature event that would put the Tenterfield Lions Club name up in lights,” he said.

“Not only did club members engage enthusiastically, the town of Tenterfield did as well with around 1300 coming through the gates to enjoy a happy community and familyoriented event. “

AS State of Origin I sneaks up on league fans, round nine of normal fixtures has left Blues’ coach Laurie Daly and several NRL coaches with plenty of reasons for sleepless nights.

Titan’s tough man Greg Bird faces a lengthy suspension after a nasty lifting tackle and could miss up to six weeks after a visit to the judiciary.

That would rule him out of Origin I and II and leave a big hole in the Titans’ line-up. The judiciary will be a busy place this week with players from several clubs facing suspensions over lifting tackles. More angst for the Blues’ camp on Monday night with Andrew Fifita headed for hospital with an ankle injury. Red line through another name, Laurie.

The fallout over Mitchell Pearce’s indiscretion

at a Sydney night club may force a shuffle in the Blues’ line-up. The matter which resulted in the Blues’ five eight being escorted from the premises in handcuffs by the boys in blue (the police variety) has been referred to the NRL Integrity Commission.

Added to the mix is news that ASADA may finally be set to issue show cause notices to dozens of NRL and AFL players, with the majority of the league players said to be from the Cronulla club.

Another unwanted distraction leading into Origin. There was of course some good footy played in round nine with some stunning results as the competition begins to level out and thankfully for tipsters a little bit of form is emerging.

The South West Country side will come together in June for the QRL Outback Muster Carnival in Blackall.

While the whole South West Country side punched well above their weight I was most impressed with the performance of Marc Embry, late inclusion Jesse Murphy; Michael Purcell and Miles forward Ashley Dyball who I believe could have a big future in the game if he chooses.

IN THE space of 24 hours Australian sport lost two giants this week - Rugby League immortal Reg Gasnier and AFL legend Tom Hafey.

Each had a hand in defining the history and the future of their chosen sport.

If asked what the mantra of each of these great men was you could not have gone wrong by saying hard work, discipline, dedication, persistence, honesty, loyalty, integrity and humility.

The prince of centres, Reg Gasnier was undisputedly one of the greatest players rugby league has ever produced. He was a Dragon through and through and starred for the mighty St George Dragons during their record run of 11 premierships. Puff the Magic Dragon as he was known played in seven of those grand finals.

He represented Australia in a then record of 36 Tests and captained his country eight times before retiring in 1967 after breaking his leg aged only 28.

Gasnier changed the way the game was played and alongside team-mates Johnny Raper and Clive Churchill was named as part of the initial rugby league Immortals.

AFL great Tom Hafey played for Richmond between 1953 and 1958. He went on to coach four clubs - Richmond, Collingwood, Geelong and Sydney, between 1966 and 1988, and led the Tigers to premierships in 1967, 1969, 1973 and 1974. Truly one of the AFL’s most successful sons.

Australian sport has lost two great champions - each thrilled fans with their unique talents and their legacy to each code is immeasurable. Above all else they were true gentlemen - players of the modern era with far less talent could learn a lot from the legacy each leaves their code.

THE battle for the A Grade Pairs Championships at the Summit Bowls club has been whittled down to four teams, with the finals to be played on Saturday. The four teams left in the battle for the title are M. Surch and M. Sweeney who will play J. Zamprogno and W. Thomas; B. Wilmot and L. Covill face off against A. McGlashan and D. Lewis in the semi-finals.

The greens were prepared in excellent order

by Errol Moss and Dale Barker for last week’s competition and this is the way the games were decided: In game one G. Mugridge and R. Newlands (23) defeated G. Mugridge and K. Mungall (17) while in the second game the team of Empen and Capelli (19) were just a little too strong for Davis and Barker.

In other rounds Surch and Sweeney forced their way into the final round of four by defeating Mugridge and Newlands 25-12. Jamie Zamprogno and partner W. Thomas had a good win over Day and Stanley (20-8) it is sure to be a busy day of bowls with the Club Singles also to be decided and social bowls also on the card.

Graham Rubie and Attilio Zamprogno had no answers against the team of McGlashan and Lewis and went down 23-10. Kurt Empen and Rob Capelli were defeated 26-15 by Brian Wilmot and partner Les Covill.

There were some competitive bowls played and the final four are sure to be on fire on Saturday when they line up in the semi-finals.

It will be another busy day at the Summit on Saturday with another round of social bowls and the semi-finals of the Club Singles and Pairs.

A reminder that the ladies play on Thursday (1pm start) and Turkey Triples will be played on Tuesday (May 20) - play commences at 12.30.

THORN HAS THE EDGE RAY Thorn edged out Jim Mitchell in Sunday’s Sporters at the Stanthorpe Golf Club. The rundowns went to another two of the regulars, Graham Clark and John Walsh. Rob Reeves picked up the best gross while the pin shot on the third was claimed by Ron Hansen and Kev Rowlings took the pro pin. Going home happy with their spoils were Graham Clark and Paul Byrnes who each collected a meat tray. A reminder that tee off on Sunday for Sporters is still between 8am and 8.30am.

47TH SUCCESS THE 47th Battalion Carnival is the only IntraDivision Rugby League Carnival still played in Queensland and was held in Gladstone last weekend. Some 320 players from Rockhampton west to Charleville and south to clubs in the TRL and BRL showcased their skills and entertained several thousand spectators over two days of football. It was a great display of the grassroots talent in Queensland.

The men’s final was played between Toowoomba (38) and Bundaberg (4) and following the game a team was named to compete in the A Grade State Carnival at Southport over the June long weekend.

The final produced some great attacking football from the well-drilled Clydesdales team who steamrolled defending champions Bundaberg, who only narrowly defeated the South West Country side earlier in the day.

Player of the carnival was former Gremlins player and captain Jason Wilmot who recently returned to the Gatton Hawks after a stint playing on the Sunshine Coast.

Wilmot was selected in the Central Division Crows - the A Grade Men’s team.

It was a triumph for the 32-year-old who came to the game of rugby league not through the usual junior rugby league channels but as a mature

Wilmot, who was player of the 2013 TRL grand final captained South West Country to win the Outback Muster two years ago and went on to captain the Queensland Outback side while playing for the Gremlins.

In a coup for grassroots and country football the 47th Battalion Carnival will head to Roma in 2015 as part of the district’s centenary of football celebrations.

SWC PUNCH ABOVE THEIR WEIGHT THE South West Country side played three games in the 47th Battalion carnival without success, however in the final match against Bundaberg they showed that the scoreboard results in previous games had not been a true reflection of their performance.

Punching well above their weight, South West Country surprised the big crowd and their opponents when they led their more fancied opponents by two points only 10 minutes from full-time.

It was a great performance by the minnows of the competition who had trailed 6-4 at the halftime break.

Two tries to Bundaberg in the closing minutes of the game denied South West Country an upset win.

The final score of 20-10 put Bundaberg into the final against Toowoomba.

The competition draw was not kind to South West Country - their first game was against one of the competition heavyweights, Rockhampton and saw them beaten 42-6.

Gremlin’s representative Marc Embry was the first try scorer for South West Country and the gutsy Frenchman says he will have some special memories of the carnival to take home when he returns to France later in the year.

In the second game against Central Highlands (36-10) the South West tries came from two of the Western players Luke Kuhl (Miles) and Michael Purcell (Mitchell) who also converted.

IT was Mother’s Day with a twist at the Inglewood SSAA on Sunday as many a fine animal and fur were delivered to the Werdehelarwe Trading Post when the mountain men, returned laden with furs and meat for the forthcoming winter and of course we should not forget the one mountain woman hunter - really what more could any mother want for Mother’s Day. The trading post was offering a mixed bag of animals for varying prices, the hunters designated the prey and when the day was done the furs and meat were tallied to come to the following results.

This was a far different competition where the value of the target shot counted, rather than the number of the targets successfully hit.

For those who may be a little alarmed I am reliably informed that no animals were harmed in the exercise, however the reputations of some may have been a little dented.

Tom Donald (with a huge bonus for the bear) outscored and outpriced runner-up Stephanie Patterson.

Tom Donald shot not only the most targets but also the most valuable (bear) and judging by his performances over the past couple of months there is no doubt he is back on target.

Filling the other minor placing was Quentin Chapman who finished ahead of the rest of the field including Phil Neal, Graham Morgan and if this had been for real I am led to believe Ray Dudgeon would have starved through the long winter.

RECENTLY released tickets for the upcoming dinner with former Australian captain Allan Border have been selling quickly, according to members of the Stanthorpe Junior Cricket Association committee promoters of the event to be held on June 28 at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism. This is a night not to be missed for any cricket lover. Joining AB will be another of the game’s great characters, Rodney Hogg.

It is not every day we have true cricketing royalty in Stanthorpe. ANOTHER GREMLIN MAKING HIS MARK

ROAD OPEN THE president and secretary of the Inglewood Sporting Shooters Assoc would like to draw notice to the members and others that contrary to the signage on Bosnjaks Road - the thoroughfare is a public road and as such is NOT closed to through traffic.

The matter of the illegal signage has been raised with the owners, and relevant authorities including the police and emergency service personnel.

Club members who are involved with emergency services have pointed out the dangers of illegal signage and the confusion they can raise in the case of an emergency.

BETTER CONDITIONS BIGGER FIELDS CONDITIONS on the Wallangarra golf course were a vast improvement last Saturday. The vastly improved weather conditions drew a better field for the Single Stroke event sponsored by Sue and Taffy Edwards.

Mark Clarke made the most of the great conditions and finished on top in the event with a score of nett 72. After revelling in the going the previous week Kevin Williams had to settle for second place on Saturday, with Kevin Schultz taking the Captain’s Stakes.

It was left to Denis McMeniman to put one close on the pin on the ninth for the only pin shot of the day. Kevin Schultz was lucky enough to take home the birdies nest at hole 16.

This week is the Flag Event and it always manages to throw up some good scores and exciting finishes. A reminder that visitors are always welcome at the ’Garra.

UNITED MEN CEMENT TOP SPOT UNITED Football Club cemented their spot as favourites to take out the Stanthorpe Men’s Football championship again this season after what could only be classed a resounding win over Ballandean last Saturday. The two clubs went head to head in all grades and honours went to United who were only defeated in the ladies’ game.

When the men’s sides clashed in the opening round Ballandean gave their more fancied rivals quite a fright and Ballandean supporters were hoping their side would repeat that performance and get them a win.

Ballandean were forced to make several prematch positional changes following the late withdrawal of their keeper but in essence they were given a master class by the well-drilled United outfit. The combination of United’s quick passing game and solid defence proved too hot to handle.

Ballandean held their own in the opening 10 minutes of the game in an early arm wrestle.

Ballandean looked more composed and competitive in the second stanza but they were clearly no match for United. Ballandean was not without its chances in the second half. A penalty for a handball in the box went begging as the shot was blocked. United added two more goals in the second half, giving them a comprehensive 6-0 nil win and moving them further ahead on the leader board.

DAY SHINES BALLANDEAN’S Sarah Day was a bright spot in a dour struggle in the clash between the United and Ballandean Ladies on Saturday. Ballandean failed to find the form and rhythm they showed against Tenterfield two weeks ago and looked a little rusty after having a week off.

In what was a scrappy game from both sides the highlight was most definitely the individual performance of Sarah Day to claim the only goal of the match.

United are a team on the improve and pushed Ballandean all the way. Poor passing from Ballandean and patient defence from United continued to frustrate the Ballandean game plan.

Midway through the half the deadlock was broken by Day with a fine solo effort starting from around halfway. United defenders held off allowing Day to get into the penalty box before finishing with a sublime shot.

The tempo certainly picked up in the second half as once again United again frustrated their opposition quickly turning defence into counterattack. Ballandean keeper Katrina Marino did a superb job to keep her team in the game. Watch for a late run from the United girls again this season.

DOWN TO THE WIRE A SECOND half fightback in the Senior Colts between United and Ballandean saw Ballandean level the scores only to have United grab the lead and the all-important three points in the dying moments of the game.

Ballandean fielded one of their strongest sides this season against the well organised United side. A determined run by Brad Knight down the left flank led to Ballandean’s opening goal and they equalised thanks to a goal from Liam Taylor.

Good teams always seem to find a little extra and United found the back of the net close to full time to seal a 3-2 win.

United also tasted victory in the Junior Colts.

The United side hit the park with a well-organised team plan that constantly put the Ballandean backline under pressure. Through Ellice Orreal Ballandean were able to withstand many of the attacking raids.

Ballandean reverted to counter-attack and looked dangerous via Ally McLellan. It was on one of these breaks that Ally was rewarded with a free kick outside the box, William McCall’s shot got through the wall and an unsighted keeper was unable to prevent the goal shortly before the halftime break levelled when Ballandean failed to handle a high ball.

In the second half United controlled much of the game while Ballandean tried desperately to counter-attack. The game looked to be heading for a draw when United was rewarded with a penalty from a handball.

The conversion successful, they were able to play out the game beyond the reach of their opponents with another goal close to full time.

MEMORIAL GOLF DAY A MEMORIAL golf day at the Nudgee Golf Club organised last Friday in honour of former Stanthorpe all-round good bloke Russell Cook is set to become an annual event. Over 140 players friends, fellow workers and members of the Nudgee Golf Club in Brisbane gathered on Friday to play for the inaugural Russell Cook Memorial Golf Day. Russell, son of Patti Cook and son-in-law of Fran and Des Day passed away suddenly several months ago and the Memorial Day was organised by the Nudgee Golf Club where Russell worked for the past eight years.

Long-time mate Mick Jensen was joined by Wes Smith, Mick Hancock and Moose (Glen Smith) and also Matthew (Russell’s son, 11 years old), Leesa (Russell’s widow) family and friends who released blue and white balloons (Bulldogs colours) during the course of the day.

The Stanthorpe group is hoping to organise a busload of Stanthorpe mates to play in next year’s event ...that is assuming team captain Jenno gets a return invitation after young Matthew and Jenno’s buggy parted company when the captain took a sharp turn just a little too quickly. Oops thankfully no major injuries, just a few nervous moments for the “responsible adults”.

FORMER Stanthorpe Junior Gremlin Hayden Smith debuted last Saturday for the Newcastle Knights NSW Cup Side in a tough game against the Penrith Panthers.

After leading 8-4 at half-time, the Newcastle Knights were defeated 38-16 in round nine of the NSW Cup at Cessnock Sports Ground.

The young second rower who played his junior football from Under 7s to Under 16s for the Gremlins is following in the footsteps of his father, Wes Smith who also played for the Knights before a serious shoulder injury ended his career.

Smith Snr said he was surprised when he heard his son had been called up to NSW Cup but was very pleased with the 19-year-old’s performance in the side which is coached by former Knights A Grade coach Rick Stone.

“It was big step up for him going straight into NSW Cup which is really the NRL Reserve Grade.

“I was pleased with the way he handled himself - there are a lot of very experience players going around in NSW Cup and it was a big transition for a 19-year-old.”

It has not all been smooth sailing for this talented second rower. He was contracted to the Broncos youth development program after being identified as an emerging junior talent, before illness forced him out of the game for a period.

Last season he played for one of the Knights feeder club Kurri Kurri in the 20s hoping to break in to the big league.

This weekend the Knights travel to North Sydney Oval to play the Bears and Smith will be hoping to retain his spot in the line-up.

For all those juniors playing rugby league locally Hayden Smith should be an example of what hard work and commitment can bring you - you can live your dreams. The Stanthorpe and Border League community look forward to following Hayden’s blossoming career.
