A STANTHORPE man is hoping to finally say thank you to the woman who saved his life after a crash south-west of Maryvale almost 13 years ago.

When home handyman and writer Damian Malcolm wrote about his experience on his blog at the weekend it not only struck a chord with his readers but also started him on a campaign to find the person who he believes helped save his life after the “life-changing incident”.

“I think I would give her a big hug and say thank you first and foremost,” Damian said.

“I just appreciate her being there - I imagine she did a lot more than I remember.”

The accident happened on 22 October at around 9.15am on the Cunningham Road “somewhere around Maryvale” when he fell asleep at the wheel and his 1979 “rust brown” Nissan Skyline rolled several times.

“At the scene of my accident, there was a lady who was there to help me,” he recalled.

“I never saw her and can’t recall her name. She kept me conscious until the ambulance arrived, and apparently also may have called my family to tell them I’d been hurt.

That’s the way organiser Craig Williams has described the Veteran and Vintage Chevrolet Association of Australia’s 45th anniversary rally which finishes up on the Southern Granite belt today after six days of activities.

Mr Williams praised the people of the area and particularly Tracy Vellacott and her team at Warwick Tourism and Events for the success of the event which has seen 81 cars and more than 150 people head to the area for the rally - held every five years at venues around Australia.

He said the event has included vehicles and cars from Western Australia, South Australia, NSW, Queensland and Victoria.

“We could have gone anywhere in South East Queensland (for the event),” he said.

“We (the organising committee) came to Warwick and the Information Centre staff come out and just sold us on Warwick.

“Initially we were only coming for four days but we extended it to six. They told us and showed us everything you should see and do in the area.”

And he said the area had lived up to their expectations.

“This is one of the best if not the best rallies we have ever had,” Mr Williams said.

The week started with a meet and greet at the Art Gallery on Saturday, with a static display for the people of Warwick on Sunday. On Monday they went to Stanthorpe, Tuesday was rodeo day while Wednesday they took in the sites around Killarney and surrounding area. Today will see them take part in a steam train ride to Clifton before the final presentation at the RSL tonight.

He said he and his friends, who were travelling in a second car, had stopped at a small cafe for breakfast at Aratula.

“I followed Allan about 10 kilometres past Cunninghams Gap, then fell asleep at the wheel and ran off the road,” he said.

“I rolled in the ditch, end over end, at 100km/h, the car coming to a rest about 50 metres from the highway, crushed and upside down in a paddock.”

The then 20-year-old managed to scramble out of his car, pressing a car mat to his head to stem the bleeding from a cut to his forehead and crawled out through the window before being met by the woman.

“I remember I couldn’t actually see because of the blood in my eyes, so I don’t know how far away from the wreckage I had managed to get myself,” he said.

“But I heard several voices of people running up from the highway, one of which was a woman that I’ll never, ever forget: ‘Oh my God! He’s alive. Someone ring the ambulance? Hey, hey, are you OK?’ “She rested my head on her knees; I never saw her, only heard her voice. She kept me together until the ambulance arrived, asking me questions to make sure I hadn’t lost it or gone into shock. I was fully lucid, and could recall my name, family names, addresses, etc. To this day I regret never getting her name or finding out who she was.”

He was taken to hospital in Warwick for treatment with multiple cuts and bruises, a head injury and a detached clavicle and later allowed to leave.

And while he believes he would have probably survived without her, he also credits the accident with changing his life.

“I had been working in a dead-end job in a factory for three years and slowly going brain dead (before the accident),” he said.

“I’d like to show her that I created a new life - I met my wife and I’ve got four kids, I’m running my own business and writing - fantastic things that I never thought I’d be capable of.”

Damian said he hoped the good Samaritan was still living around the area or might have told a friend about the incident so he could shed some light on the mystery and finally say thank you.

Cycling on for Smiddy CYCLISTS from across Australia and New Zealand are putting the pedal to the metal to help fight cancer as they embark on the three-day, 580- kilometre Midi-Smiddy Challenge from 16 to 18 May 2014.

A team of 50 cyclists will leave Brisbane on a long-weekend circuit, cycling South East Queensland’s most scenic and challenging terrain and arriving in Warwick on 17 May. Challenge director Mark Smoothy said the Smiddy events attracted riders determined to take on a huge cycling challenge and help raise funds for world-class research at Mater Medical Research Institute (MMRI).

He said the Smiddy mission was to add to the $4 million already raised by this cycling program for world-class research being carried out at the Mater Medical Research Institute (MMRI).

Adam Smiddy died, aged just 26, from an aggressive melanoma and his mate Mark ‘Sharky’ Smoothy wanted to honour their pact to do a credit card ride - ride for a few days in one direction with nothing more than a credit card then catch a bus home. That dream was never realised.

But Adam Smiddy’s funding legacy to cancer research, via his mate Sharky, is something very special.

“It’s a sad thought but chances are that most people have fought cancer themselves or seen the disease affect someone close to them, whether it’s family, a friend or work colleague,” Sharky said.

“That’s why it’s fantastic to see such a dedicated community of riders, support crew and donors united by a common goal to cure cancer and come together to feel the Smiddy spirit and tackle this challenge.”

Smiling for Smiddy is an annual program of cycling and triathlon challenge events which support cancer research projects at MMRI in the areas of melanoma, prostate and ovarian cancer as well as complementary therapies to improve quality of life for cancer patients.

The first Smiddy event was held in 2006, when three cyclists embarked on an epic journey from Brisbane to Townsville to raise funds for cancer research and honour the memory of their mate, Adam Smiddy.

From that first event, Warwick has had a special relationship with this event according to CEO of Warwick Tourism and Events Tracey Vellacott “This relationship came about some years ago when I was in the council’s communications/ events role,” she said.

“The organisation approached then mayor Ron Bellingham in regard to support for their event to travel into Warwick. Ron believed (as he always does) in the power of drawing events to the region and council provided support by way of hall hire and staff time initially. WTE now acts as this organisation’s conduit into the Warwick community.

“Why... I guess we were just lucky to initially be on the circuit from Brisbane and back again, probably because Rowan Foster, one of the key

She said the bison were more tolerant than cows.

“He brought 12 bison and did three days at Grafton and then two days with us,” she said.

“So that was five days working with 12 bison. With cattle it usually takes two

cows per person.”

Twelve riders on each day took part in the school with the animals working on the finer techniques of campdrafting.

Kirsty said both days were huge successes and it was hoped to have him back later this year provided it fits in with his schedule.

IF you passed the Stanthorpe Rodeo Grounds at the weekend you could have been forgiven for thinking you were seeing things. Campdraft instructor Kendell Nielson of Dungong was conducting a campdraft school but rather than the usual cattle, Kendell prefers Bison.

Twelve students on each day had the unique opportunity to work with the beasts most of us only see in Hollywood movies.

organisers at the time, had family connections into Warwick and did his own training rides out here in the country.

“I truly can’t stress enough what wonderful people they are. The first dinner I attended, Maria Smiddy, Adam’s mum, spoke to the crowd and told them about her boy, his friendship with Sharky and how incredibly humbled he would be by the great things happening in his name. They have actually named a park (on Park Rd) in his honour... it’s where lots of cyclists congregate or head off on rides from.”

From that initial Townsville ride, Smiling for Smiddy has grown to include six events throughout the year, raising more than $4 million since the program’s inception.

Warwick residents and sportsmen and women are urged to support the Smiddy team in their fight against cancer when cyclists arrive in Warwick as part of the Midi-Smiddy Challenge on 17 May. SOME of the region’s best campdrafters went back to school at Stanthorpe at the weekend to iron out any rough spots in their techniques.

While it might not be unusual to see campdrafters at the Stanthorpe Showground - the beasts they were drafting caused passersby to do a double take.

Dungong horseman Kendell Nielson brought his bison to town to help the campdrafters work on their technique.

Event organiser Kirsty Beckett said she had heard of the schools before and after travelling to Tenterfield to see one in action. With the help of the Stanthorpe Campdraft Committee she decided to bring Kendell to town for the two-day school.

A 27-YEAR-OLD driver has been charged with traffic offences following an incident near Stanthorpe last week.

“At about 10pm, Wednesday 23 April, Stanthorpe police received information from members of the public regarding a Holden Commodore being driven dangerously on New England Highway, Applethorpe,” Stanthorpe police officer in charge Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said.

“The vehicle overtook another vehicle at high speed over double white lines before the driver lost control resulting in the vehicle rolling.

“The 27-year-old driver left the scene of the accident but was located by police a short time later at which time he became aggressive towards police and resisted arrest.

“He was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, driving whilst unlicensed, resisting arrest and his vehicle impounded by police.”

Police are awaiting the results of a blood test to establish whether the driver was under the influence of drugs.

Assault and obstruction

A 22-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with assault and obstructing police following a domestic disturbance on Anzac Day. “At 4.30pm on Anzac Day police attended a domestic disturbance in McGregor Terrace, Stanthorpe, where a female had been assaulted,” Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said.

“The 22-year-old male involved in the incident decamped from police however was located over the weekend at which time he was charged with assault, obstructing police and also keeping protected fauna after a python was located at his residence by police.

“The offender did not possess a permit for the reptile involved.

Sen Sgt Ireland said another domestic disturbance at 1am Saturday morning resulted in police attendance at a Folkestone Street address at which time a 32-year-old intoxicated woman was detained by police and held in custody until she sobered up and could be served with a domestic violence application.

“Upon being released from the station she committed a public nuisance offence in Marsh Street and was subsequently charged with this offence,” he said.

Competing in just her first show, Amy Wilson took out the best junior handler at the Clifton Cavie Club show last weekend.

SOME of the most beautiful and best guinea pigs in Australia are coming to the Southern Downs in July.

The Clifton-based Cavy Club, which celebrates its first birthday this month, is set to host an Australian Cavy event in Clifton during July.

Cavia Porcellus is the scientific name for guinea pig.

“We will have a big pet show on the Saturday, and Sunday will be the pedigree show,” Clifton Cavy Club secretary Nancy Oliver said.

“They will be coming from all over Brisbane and New South Wales and we believe we also have people coming from South Australia.”

But before that the group, which holds events on the fourth Sunday of every month, and held one at the weekend, are already planning a big birthday bash to celebrate its first birthday on 24 May at the FE Logan Hall.

Nancy, who started raising guinea pigs at the age of 13 and came back to breeding them four years ago after a break of 12 years, said the club was formed last year by locals who didn’t want to keep making the trips to Brisbane for competitions.

She said they now have 20 members from Warwick, Toowoomba and down into NSW. So why guinea pigs - Nancy says, “Why not?”

It is a big deal with four clubs in Brisbane alone.

“You can’t go past a guinea pig whatever your age,” she said.

“I literally can’t go past a guinea pig - I have 58 of them!” Nancy laughed.

“Originally, when I was a kid, between us Mum (Cavy Club president Judith McNamara), and I had more than 300.”

German arrested A 28-YEAR-OLD German national has been charged following a disturbance outside the Central Hotel in Stanthorpe on Sunday morning.

Police said they were called to attend a “large disturbance” during which the man was seen to kick a female and knock her over.

The male then obstructed police while he was being placed in the police van and was later issued with infringement notices for public nuisance, obstructing police and re-entering a licensed premises after eviction.

A 21-YEAR-OLD driver who registered an alcohol reading of .079 per cent has been charged after his vehicle was stopped at Applethorpe at 1am on Saturday morning.

A second drink driver was stopped in Davadi Street at 2.15am on Sunday morning and the 25-year-old male driver also recording a reading of .079 per cent.

Splendid services I WAS able to attend three outstanding schools’ Anzac services last week, starting with the Dawn Service at Scots PGC College. Warwick High and Assumption College also held wonderful Anzac services.

While they all commemorated the same significant event in Australia’s national history, they all had slightly different perspectives.

To me, this made all the services unique and special. I was happy that I was able to attend all of them.

On Anzac Day, there was an extremely well-attended Dawn Service at Stanthorpe and afterwards I travelled to Goondiwindi for a mid-morning service. Hundreds of people lined the street to acknowledge returned service

personnel. I was very impressed with the number of young people participating again this year - they all looked smart and proud as they marched in their uniforms.

It was on to Tallwood on the afternoon of Anzac Day for one of the nation’s very few sunset Anzac services.

At least 200 local residents turned out to march to the local memorial at the showgrounds to hear the Last Post

played at the sunset. It was a tremendous effort by all involved.

This year for me the crowds of people that gathered across the electorate was possibly more significant than previous years, as it was the 99th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.

Southern Downs residents did well in remembering the 105,000 Australians who have lost their lives in war and the hundreds of thousands of others who have served our nation.

I recently attended the Allora Sportsmen’s Hall of Fame for the induction of local greats Lou Platz in front of a star-studded audience of former state, national and international Rugby League greats. Anyone who has visited the Allora sports hall of fame

Yowies invade Woodenbong

By JOYCE MARSH (Woodenbong Correspondent) KYOGLE Shire mayor Danielle Mulholland was attacked by a Yowie at the sixth-birthday Woodenbong Yowie Country Market at the weekend.

Bystander Jim Grasby of WAG tried to pull her free. Danielle is reported to have escaped unscathed and will be able to resume her duties at the council.

Fun was the flavour of the day.

Great workshops and demonstrations, in funny hats face-painted children were seen everywhere, banners flew and stalls dressed to suit the birthday theme, and a good variety of stalls there were. A beautiful day and the sun kept the mood happy and the live music brightened up everyone’s spirits.

Eleven happy winners of the stall cash vouchers and gifts that were up for grabs and the raffle winner of the ‘Dinner for two’ at the Woodenbong Hotel was M. Martin and the winner of Max Melville’s timber box was G. George.

Back to burn up the floor

By TANIA PHILLIPS DUST off your dancing shoes and prepare to burn up the dance floor for the annual Dalveen Rural Fire Brigade Backburners Ball on Saturday night.

The ball, which last year attracted almost 270 people to the Dalveen Hall, is one of the brigade’s major fund-raisers of the year.

Dalveen Rural Brigade first officer Jim Mitchell said everything was set for a big night from 5pm to late at the Dalveen Hall.

He said entertainement would be provided by the Mic Travers Band who will play a wide variety of music including pub rock and blues.

“We have limited the ticket sales as the hall and surrounds can comfortably accommodate around 300 people, so it’s a case of first in, best dressed,” he said.

Once again, interest has been received from far afield after last year’s event.

“Last year’s attendance was really encouraging, and if it continues to grow like we think it will, we may have to move it next year outdoors onto the oval,” he said.

Jim said there was no charge to camp on the oval adjacent to the hall and they expected a lot of people to take up the offer to camp and make the most of the recovery breakfast the next day.

Jim stressed it was a family-friendly event, and that the dress was casual.

Hard bargain GOVERNMENTS are signing free trade arrangements with countries that drive harder bargains than Australians do and it fills this writer with foreboding.

Those countries are buying us out while signing on “lease only” in China.

Japan requires prior approval for any foreign investment over 10 per cent in companies listed on the Japanese stock exchange etc.

In brief New ramps for Tenterfield school TENTERFIELD’S Sir Henry Parkes Memorial Public School students returned to school this week to find some school holiday improvements.

Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall said that the school was one of two to have work worth $38,000 completed during the term one school holidays.

“The school holiday period provides the opportunity to repair school facilities, or start new projects, while students and staff are out of the classroom,” Mr Marshall said.

“While both these projects are relatively small, they will make a big difference to the school environment.”

He said the primary school had new handrails and ramps completed while the other project was stage two of a toilet block upgrade at Armidale City Public School.

“I am very pleased these works have been completed during the holidays, complementing more than $2.3 million worth of improvements completed at local schools less than five months ago during the Christmas break,” Mr Marshall said.

want the temperature to exceed 185 degrees. Pour a small layer into the base of a jar and place a piece of candle wick into the centre of the jar.

Hold this in place until the wax is dry enough to where the the wick stays in place.

Next, make an X with tape over the top of the jar,

poke a hole through the top and pull the wick through.

Fill up the jar with melted wax to the desired height.

We filled ours half an inch from the top.

After the wax is completely solid, cut the wick so that it’s half an inch tall.

Light, and enjoy your pretty, new candles.

Council News Youth voices heard loud and clear National Youth Week has lived up to expectations giving voice to many young people in the Southern Downs Region through a series of events, workshops and activities between from April 4th to 13th, SDIEA (Southern Downs Industry Education Association), headspace Warwick and Southern Downs Regional Council partnered to stage Youth Week, promoting the theme ‘Our Voice Our Impact’.

Southern Downs Regional Council Youth Development Oicer Hailey Cosh said she was pleased with the success of National Youth Week and hoped that many young people had the chance to learn new skills, interact with community members and enjoy the social events.

Council to close Kadows Road Bridge due to lood damage and age

Council helps residents with Autumn “spring clean” Council is conducting a Kerbside Clean-up campaign in the southern region from Monday May 12 to Friday May 30. This is a great opportunity to get rid of any accumulated rubbish.

Council’s Environmental Services Manager Tim O’Brien said the clean-ups are carried out in the northern and southern town areas on alternate years to assist residents to keep their properties free of unwanted items and to remove mosquito breeding containers.

“Just place any unwanted items neatly by the kerbside and Council will do the rest,” he said.

Mr O’Brien said all articles must be able to be lifted safely by two people and items such as refrigerators and wardrobes must have doors removed prior to placement on the footpath.

“To enable recycling, Council also asks that items be separated into stockpiles of green waste, scrap metal and other materials,” he said.

Please note that the following items will not be removed: • chemicals and chemical containers, including paint • wet or putrescible materials (food scraps, liquids etc) • asbestos materials • tyres • grass clippings.

Council advises that the collection is only for deined wheelie bin collection areas, and there will only be one visit to each street.

Stanthorpe and Applethorpe Collection: Area 1: Collection Monday May 12 – Friday May 16 West of Wallangarra Rd, Maryland St, High St and the New England Hwy (see map). Place items by the kerbside no earlier than Saturday May 10, and no later than 5pm on Sunday May 11.

Area 2: Collection Monday May 19 – Friday May 23 East of Wallangarra Rd, Maryland St, High Street and the New England Highway. Place items by the kerbside no earlier than Saturday May 17, and no later than 5pm on Sunday May 1.

Southern Downs Regional Council recently closed Kadows Road Bridge at Clintonvale due to safety concerns about the old and damaged bridge. While inconvenient, the closure was essential.

Consultant engineers advised Council some time ago that the bridge should have a reduced load limit and eventually be replaced however recent looding has further damaged the structural integrity of the bridge to the point where it is no longer safe or traicable. Council has closed the bridge and created a signed detour. Council will look at constructing a new bridge and discuss funding options during budgetary considerations in the coming weeks.

Maryvale opens new drumMUSTER site A new drumMUSTER site has opened up at the Maryvale Waste Transfer Station, making it more convenient for farmers and other chemical users to recycle their empty agvet chemical drums.

Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) Councillor Neil Meiklejohn said the drumMUSTER program was of great beneit to the region’s farmers and other chemical users.

“The appropriate recycling of waste and chemicals drums is vital to ensure we maintain this beautifully scenic region. Our farmers are environmentally conscious and are always looking for sustainable ways to deliver their products. Knowing that chemical drums will be recycled into useful items is a win-win for everyone,” he said.

Maryvale will receive drums during normal opening hours.

Fitness coordinator Brendan Iles said the challenge provided great motivation for people to achieve their goal weight and track their progress each week.

“The challenge began on Friday February 14 and inished on Friday May 2. Friday night weigh in sessions provided great motivation and several members were really pleased with their increase in itness and signiicant percentage weight loss.

“The challenge has inished however anyone interested in weight loss and increased itness should see us about a personalised challenge to it their work/life schedules,” he said.

Council’s Youth Space was a busy venue during the 2014 National Youth Week events.

“There were highlights but a major coup for the Southern Downs is that we joined with ABC Open to run some digital workshops.

Young people aged 12–25, had the opportunity to use their own digital media devices or loaned devices by partners Southern Downs Regional Libraries to take photos and make a short movie around the youth week theme,” she said.

Ms Cosh said she wanted say a huge thanks to partners SDIEA (Southern Downs Industry Education Association), and headspace Warwick in staging National Youth Week events. “This year created a real buzz and excitement around the Southern Downs and I’m pleased that we can focus community attention on so many of good things young people are doing,” she said.

Bringing out their best THE School of Total Education’s high academic results are quite amazing, with its top graduates consistently achieving OPs of either 1 or 2 each year. However, perhaps more amazing is the fact that all its graduates do well, not just those who are gifted academically.

This is born out by the fact that year in, year out, its graduates almost always score OPs of 15 or better.

Last year, more than half of its graduates had OPs of between 1 and 5.

This may seem contradictory to the school’s approach of focusing on co-operation rather than competition, but the result is quite natural according to principal Shane Power.

“Competition and praise for being the best has been shown not to work as an effective educational tool” Mr Power said.

“It produces a lot of tension and pressure for students and inhibits their natural desire to do their best.

Students may do well in the praise hothouse then burnout and become disillusioned later.

“What society needs is stable and happy young people who are settled in themselves and open to learning.

People who can accept themselves and who are OK with making mistakes. Young people who have a sense of the bigger picture and want to contribute to the world.”

At the School of Total Education, children are encouraged from an early age to do their best, but without focusing on results. Excellence becomes a natural approach, without stress and tension.

Parents gear up for Year 7 The students are taught study techniques to help them work effectively and relaxation techniques to shed the stress when it does come.

“Many of our graduates comment that these techniques are really valuable after they leave school as well. So we are teaching them for life,” Mr Power said.

The Southern Downs is fortunate to have a school with such a unique

philosophy.

“There really is nothing like it in the whole of Australia” Mr Power said.

“We have families who have come from Sydney, Brisbane and other areas to be at the school. We have a number of families from Stanthorpe and are currently considering transport options for primary children from the Granite Belt.”

AS Queensland makes the historic change of bringing Year 7 children into secondary school in 2015, parents are understandably concerned about how the move will play out.

Schools throughout the Southern Downs Region have been taking steps to ready themselves for the change and parents have been taking a keen interest in where their young high schoolers will commence their secondary journey.

Corkell has noticed a sharp increase in the number of parents making early inquiries about Year 7 for 2015.

“Since last year we have had people securing their place in the Year 7 cohort of 2015”, Mr McCorkell said.

“It’s understandable that parents are concerned about how their young child will cope in a secondary school setting,” he said.

Warwick Christian College has been offering Year 7 since their secondary

school started.

“We have a pastoralcare focus in the way we timetable and staff our lower secondary school.

They are critical years and a special focus needs to be put on student welfare,” Mr McCorkell said.

The move to bring Year 7 into secondary school brings Queensland schools into line with other states on the eastern seaboard and dovetails well with the way the Australian Curriculum has been written.

RODDIES Fish and Chips in Albion Street Warwick has changed hands, though you’re sure to recognise some familiar faces.

That’s because Rod Kilner has sold the business to his daughter Orysia Kilner and her partner Peter Price.

Orysia also owns the R and K’s Fork and Takeaway in McEvoy Street, but not content with already running one successful takeaway food shop, Orysia quickly offered to buy Roddies Fish and Chips when her father wanted to sell.

Rod will be taking a break after the changeover period. If you look closely, you can already see the “Gone Fishin” sign in his eyes!

This Saturday & Sunday is Mopar Muscle Weekend!

The Chryslers are coming to town again! This is the 5th year the Qld Chrysler Association hosted two day Mopar Muscle Weekend descends on Morgan Parks Warwick Dragway for a mayday weekend of action and fun. Proceedings kick off with a display of the street driven cars cruising into Leslie Park in town on Saturday morning at 10am for a two hour display.

The cars will range from Aussie Valiants, in all manner of originality, cruiser and modified big horse power street machines, to American Mopars like the legendary Dodge Challengers and Plymouth Cuda’s.

All will be on display and all will return to the highly regarded, superbly prepared and expertly operated Warwick Dragstrip for some 1/8th mile tyre frying action for the duration of Saturday, followed by main race day on Sunday beginning at 10am. A show and shine will be running in conjunction with Sundays racing, with trophies on offer, while the racers will battle out for cash prizes, including a $250 purse for the Grand Champion. If you like the smell of burning rubber, and appreciate cool cars and the sound of horsepower, then make a weekend of it and come out and say howdy, and check out some real Mopar Muscle action.

Referee blunders becoming the rule

THE Riddle of the Referees and unexpected upsets are becoming so common place now in NRL that they are the norm.

This week as we head into the “Representative Round” most of Rugby League Officialdom has the opportunity to return to Rugby League Reform School for a refresher in obstruction rules, forward passes, basic counting, ball grounding and any number of rules which were once black and white but now have more hues and variations than the rainbow.

Perhaps, they will also use this weekend to conduct obligatory eye tests.

Of course as Australian and New

Zealand and Fiji and Samoa do battle, we will never know how many of those options are explored, but the average NRL supporter would like to think many.

Last weekend, the upsets continued to roll in. The round began on Friday with three traditional clashes; three sensational games and some tipsters were on the canvas after game three.

The Roosters looked more like the side that won the 2013 premiership and their players head into the representative weekend break confident they can win back-to-back grand finals.

The form of the Red V, however, hit a speed bump. Lack of discipline prevented them from getting good field position or an even share of possession

and it took its toll in defence.

In front of an enthusiastic Anzac Day crowd with support split 50/50 for the home side and the visitors, the Warriors showed that the cracks in the Storm armoury are no illusion. Fortress AAMI Park can be breached.

For the Warriors, their win was a confidence boost.

The NZedders arrived with nothing to lose, displayed some real effort and got away with a win.

Now they need to find that missing consistency to be a force to be reckoned with.

Melbourne turned in one of their better defensive performances this season, but their once-feared attack has not

come together well this season. They let themselves down in key areas after having enough opportunities to get a win.

In Brisbane, a sensational solo try

by Greg Inglis was overshadowed by a controversial end to the Brisbane Bunnies game.

The Broncos fought back from a 14-nil deficit at half time only to see a no-try ruling overturned by the video ref and the game headed for extra time at 26 all.

In the 79th minute, the Broncos found themselves on the wrong end of a suspect penalty as the Bunnies snatched an unlikely two-point win.

It read in dot form: Please remember these are kids; this is a game; the coaches are volunteers; the referees are human and finally THIS IS NOT THE NRL. How appropriate - it reinforces the NRL national code of conduct and some of those at the ladies’ and senior games that followed would do well to take a long hard look at what it said - or perhaps pay close attention to the sign at the entrance to Sullivan Oval which outlines the obligations of those people attending the game.

It would do some patrons good to remember that because you paid your $5 entry fee at the gate that does not give you the right to abuse or be disrespectful to officials or players.

Offensive language both on and off the field is unacceptable and club ground managers or league officials can have patrons removed from the ground for unacceptable behaviour and in extreme cases can be called before a judiciary hearing.

Our linesmen and referees are volunteers - without them we do not have a game. Of course if you don’t like what you see there is always the option to do the courses and have a go yourself.

Clubs and leagues are crying out for linesmen and refs - you could then experience firsthand the joys of running the line or having the whistle and being abused for the afternoon.

Likewise players need to remember that their actions are also on display. Saturday afternoon was a perfect example - a young girl asked the question “Why are the players swearing? They aren’t allowed to do that are they?”

Well, guess what – she is right and while everyone is allowed the odd slip, continued foul language is also unacceptable.

We all understand Rugby League is very much a tribal game but an afternoon at the local league should be something for families to enjoy, not to be driven away by the behav-

Anzac Day was celebrated with a couple of great games. President Michael Surch and partner Rob Capelli were too strong for Brian Wilmot and Quentin Stanley. The winning margin was 169. In the triples game the team of D. Burton, A. White and G. Wilmot out-scored Mark, J. Holmes and G. Rubie 15-11. The games were followed by a barbecue. On Saturday there were four games of social bowls and raffles for a number of meat trays and a six pack.

(Glenugie) McGlashan and L. (Lucky) Covill 15.

MAGNIFICENT CONDITIONS FOR McMENIMAN DAY THE Reg and Cath McMeniman day was played in magnificent conditions at Wallangarra club last Saturday. The single stableford was won by Kevin Williams who is currently in red-hot form.

Williams returned a score of 41 points to take out the popular event. Denis Ree and Mark Clarke tied for the runner-up spot not too far afield of the winner.

Pin shots were claimed by Steven Hampstead (3/15). Hampstead also grabbed the approach shot. Mark Clarke took the pin at nine and the committee is considering changing the 11th to a par four hole after the pin shot went begging once again. The Birdies Nest was won by Gary Sutcliffe at the seventh.

This weekend play at the ‘Garra will in the Wallangarra Railway Café monthly medal and putting. Saturday’s game will be followed by a general meeting and all members are encouraged to attend.

CLEAN SWEEP FOR BALLANDEAN BALLANDEAN Soccer Club is celebrating big wins last weekend over their counterparts in all grades In the Junior Colts Ballandean toppled Inter 5-2.

The Ballandean younger players are beginning to find their feet within the team structure and that translated to a 3-1 lead at half-time after goals to Hunter Murphy, Ally and William McCall. Some good early possession and team work created their early chances.

Hunter Murphy and Jaimee Beecham controlled the midfield well. Ballandean had many scoring opportunities for Ally McLellan and fellow strikers. In a game where Samantha Gianini had an outstanding performance Ballandean took the honours.

The Colts took on Tenterfield scoring a 3-1 win. Fielding 11 players for the second time this year the Colts put together back to back wins.

Ballandean began well but after an offside ruling and a disallowed goal they fell into some bad habits. Sloppy passing and poor options off the ball saw the teams locked at nil-all at half-time.

Ballandean found better rhythm in the second half with Brad Knight scoring a brace and Rob Coelli adding to his 2014 tally before Tenterfield

was able to pull back a goal.

George Jones ran hard all day while Hunter Murphy backing up from Junior Colts had good performance in the opening stanza.

In the ladies’ game Ballandean upset the home side 3-1. Tenterfield began strongly attacking the visitors’ goal in the opening minutes of the game before Ballandean settled into their game and took control of the midfield. That enabled the Ballandean wingers good position behind Tenterfield’s backline.

Emma Beecham in particular made many damaging runs down the right wing. Ballandean opened their account with a long-range strike from Kim Sanders which beat Liz Hollit.

Sarah Day scored Ballandean’s second with a fine solo effort, toe-poking it past the advancing keeper.

In the second half, Ballandean fine-tuned their attacking midfield, finding their wingers more frequently. Tenterfield tried to exert pressure on Ballandean’s passing game but Richelle Reardon was able to score for the visitors.

Towards the end of the game Tenterfield scored from a long strike from Alana Condrick.

Emma Beecham seemingly had the ball on a string all afternoon and Sarah Day turned in another strong performance, getting through a mountain of work.

In the men’s game Ballandean went into the match warm favourites and would have expected a comfortable win, however someone forgot to mention that to Tenterfield.

Ballandean were missing two of their midfields and struggled to find their rhythm early on as Tenterfield bustled Ballandean off the ball and forced poor passing options.

Tenterfield opened the scoring after some sloppy play from Ballandean.

The visitors levelled through a goal from John Spiller, only to see Tenterfield strike back when they successfully headed a ball from a cross. Jeremey Willoughby then converted from the penalty spot to tie the scores at half-time.

After the break Ballandean appeared more composed and put away three goals in quick succession before Willoughby put the game out of Tenterfield’s reach.

To their credit Tenterfield continued to push forward and their efforts were rewarded midway through the second half. Ballandean were not done with and Rueben Schmitt scored Ballandean’s sixth goal leaving the final score 6-3.

Saturday there was carnage for Blues supporters and tipsters fared little better than on Anzac Day as the Sharks circled the Panthers and took a bite out of their confidence. Todd Carney’s hopes of an Origin call up were shot down when a hamstring injury forced him from the field. A blow to Blues supporters after their incumbent five eight James Maloney injured his shoulder during the Roosters game. In a dramatic final 12 minutes, where the lead changed three times the Sharks eventually hung on for their second win of the season.

After weeks of disappointment, the Cowboys hit back in style. Changes to their line-up paid handsome dividends.

They scored seven tries and burst the Eels bubble with a 42-14 win. A 92 per cent completion rate early in the game ensured JT plenty of ball and an opportunity for him to impress on the eve of the Test and Origin duty.

At ANZ Stadium the Bulldogs hung on tenaciously to the lead when they faced a Knights outfit inspired by the unexpected presence of inspirational Alex McKinnon.

McKinnon was an unexpected visitor in the Knights change room prior to the start of the game and watched the game unfold from the coach’s box.

In the end, the Knights had more possession; more completed sets, gained more metres and missed 13

fewer tackles than their opponents.

The Bulldogs somehow showed enough composure to secure another tight win.

Tipsters were struggling to their feet from the canvas as round eight wound up on Sunday with two more games.

There were few surprises in the Manly Canberra game at Brookvale, and tipsters breathed a collective sigh of relief as Daly Cherry-Evans treated his opponents to a master class.

Cherry-Evans almost single handedly pummelled the Raiders. It was perhaps the finest individual performance by a player this season, but was not enough to earn him the starting no 7 spot in the Kangaroo side.

The doubters were once again dealt a body blow that could have come from the fist of heavy weight champ Wladimir Klitschko when the top-ofthe-table Titans felled the Tigers.

The Titans stormed Leichardt Oval stunning the Tigers and their fans as they avenged the humiliating 42-12 back in round two.

It was a spirited clash that saw tempers flare and jerseys grabbed on several occasions. It was a day when all honours went to the Gold Coast Titans.

They were aggressive all afternoon, and every 50-50 possession seemed to go their way, because they forced the issue.

After eight rounds of the competition, they are still equal leaders of the

competition, and show no signs of wilting unlike many tipsters.

And that brings us to this weekend; the Representative Round. Friday night the Kangaroos are long odds on to wallop the Kiwis.

They will face a new look Kiwi line-up as coach Stephen Kearney’s wielded the axe on the side that Australia brought to its knees in World Cup in Manchester in November.

The Kiwi side features six newcomers, including NSW Cup player Isaac John, and only five survivors of that loss.

NZ have moved on from rugbybound Sonny Bill Williams, and the coach is adamant Jared Waerea-Hargreaves didn’t warrant selection.

With stars Keiran Foran, Frank Pritchard, Issac Luke and Manu Vatuvei missing, the Kiwis are given little hope of toppling Australia.

Last year’s Pacific Test between Samoa and Tonga was a great spectacle, it will be no different when Fiji meet Samoa this Saturday night. If your tipping competition has included this match then all I can say is best of luck.

LAST OF THE EARLY STARTS WITH winter just around the corner a large field took full advantage of the last early tee off for RSL golf last week. Ross Mathews-Fredericks was the winner of the RSL bistro voucher after he returned an impressive 42 points, two clear of Keith Barnett. Both players took a pin shot each, with the 17th going to Greg Fraser.

The greens were playing fast and the 50-cent three-putt tin received a major boost in funds.

The first RSL Social Golf Chook Run on the afternoon of Anzac Day proved popular with a field of 28 players. Greg Fraser’s new driver was on song and he scored 23 points to take the winning prize. Viv Thouard was runner up with 21 points and Max Hunter and Rod Werner shared third placing.

Players competing in the Chook Run should check the poster near the entry fee box for competition details to ensure they play the proper competition nine holes. The Chook Run will always be a stableford event.

With the support of the Stanthorpe RSL there is a resurgence in the popularity of midweek golf in Stanthorpe.

The RSL Sub-Branch also supports bowls and croquet and the three sports acknowledge the contribution the club is making to the often overlooked senior sports people in the community.

TIGERS SHOW THEIR CLASS THE Stanthorpe Gremlins were out-classed by the Tenterfield Tigers last Saturday in their first home game of the 2014 BRL season.

The Tigers were dominant through the middle as the forwards asserted their authority on the game. The defence of the Tigers was one of the highlights of the game as they continually defused attacking raids from the Gremlins who found the ‘go forward’ tough. The Gremlins had chances but failed to take advantage of their opportunities.

The Stanthorpe side put the first points on the board but failed to trouble the scoreboard attendant for the remainder of the game.

The Tigers ran rampant in the latter stages of the second half, blowing the score out to 34-4.

Tigers prop Ben Watt had an outstanding game as did second rower Jim Loneragan.

Captain-coach Brendan Minns recovered from a nasty knock in the first half and finished the day with two tries to his credit.

John Webber also picked up a double. Other try scorers were Ben Watts, Justin Parker and flying full back Farron Anderson.

Minns said before the game that the side had trained well through the week and after the game was pleased with the effort of his side.

THE turnout for the Warwick Golf Club’s Annual President’s Day was fantastic and special thanks go to sponsor Mind Your Business and captains Garry Russell-Sharman and Christine Hankinson-Jones. Eliza and Scott McLennan were big winners, finishing with 48points. Mick Banks and Scott Young with 46 points were runners-up.

In the rundown it was a ball to Eddy Kemp and Gordon McKenn (44), Kerry Wharton and a host of others on 43.

It is the May Monthly Medal this Saturday.

A LITTLE drizzle here and there did little to dampen the powder at the Sporting Shooters Association Inglewood range last Sunday for the annual Anzac Tribute Shoot.

A full-on shooting program in honour of service personnel was held again this year.

Some 23 competitors braved the damp but not wet conditions for a two-stage shooting competition. The redoubt with pistol and then service rifle were followed by a 20-round match on the range including benchrest, free standing, walk up shooting and finally a volley fire of five rounds.

With the onset of the cooler weather the rotisserie roast dinner went down a treat. A very welcome visitor was one of the club’s original members, Dyce Patterson who came along to check on the performance of Kirsten Jackes and her partner Drew Ledger.

It has been suggested the club hold another special shoot in July, a black powder shoot and perhaps incorporate black powder cartridge? The club is open to all suggestions.

For the time being this weekend it is back to normal on the range with clay target day scheduled and and the rifle and pistol ranges open for practice.

THE COACH?

Damian Petrie, Stanthorpe coach was forced to watch the game unfold from the sideline after succumbing to a reoccurring calf injury. In a physical encounter the Gremlins never gave in and Marc Embry and Travis Burton were two of their best. This weekend Tenterfield hosts Killarney while Stanthorpe are away to Wallangarra.

BIG FIELD FOR ANZAC RUMBLE ANZAC Day saw 37 players hit the greens for the Red Rooster Rumble in Warwick with Dan Hardwick taking the honours with 29 points.

Runner-up and only one point behind him was Al Matthews (28 pts).

Rundown balls went to to Greg Owens (26), Rob Lester (24), Judy Lester and Simon Bennett (23), and Sam McLennan, Don Warrener and Peter Millard (22).

Pins went to Greg Owens on five; seven went to Scott McLennan and nine was a Skinner.

WATTLES’ WINNING FEELING WATTLES have begun their season in outstanding fashion and there is a groundswell of support for the idea that this could be their season. Club captain, Tim Hentschel believes this is the club’s best chance to grab that elusive TRL premiership for the first time in 10 years.

Last week Wattles added a 38-16 win over the fancied Valley’s side to their 2014 scalps.

They were in turn beaten in both Reserve grade (36-6) and Under 18 (22-18).

DIGGERS CUP POPULAR A FIELD of 30 players competed on Diggers Cup day with five Diggers vying for the cup which was won by Gordon McKeen. Winner of the single event was Buddy Hicks. Pins went the way of Cameron Scutts at 7, John Brack 9, Nathan Dionysius took 11, 13 was pocketed by Eamon Cockram and 5 and 16 were skinners.

WARWICK AND DISTRICT GIRLS UNDER 16s WARWICK and District Rugby Junior League is looking for under 16 girls (born 1999, 1998) interested in playing for the Chargers at the South West Mustangs Carnival in Chinchilla May 17 and 18.

NRL Game Development along with Warwick and District are holding a training - information session Monday 5 May at Warwick Cowboys home ground, Fr Ranger Oval starting at 4.30pm.

This is will be the final opportunity for girls interested in playing to come along and enjoy a rugby league experience.

DO you know someone under 18 years of age who has always yearned to be, or fancies themselves as the next Wayne Bennett, Craig Bellamy, Tim Sheens or Laurie Daley?

The NRL is entering the reality TV age - and is calling for potential coaches up to the age of 18 to nominate for the show “The Coach” which will film in October.

Contestants must be 18 at the time of filming however a back ground in Rugby League is not essential just a desire to be the “best”.

Some 100 contestants will be short-listed and invited to the selection camp day, where they will compete in a range of challenges and activities with only 15 making it into the show - “The Coach.”

The Selection Camp will be held on Friday 13 June 2014 at Leichardt Oval.

A total of 15 kids from across Australia, NZ and the Pacific Islands will get the chance of a lifetime to compete in the first-ever reality rugby league TV show for the chance to win an NRL contract.

TEXAS RACKS UP BIG WIN THE Texas Terriers notched up a big win in their first home game of the season. They were too good for the Wallangarra visitors racking up a big 62-6 win.

Bennett Sutton led the way for the home side scoring a treble and kicking six conversions. A serious leg injury to Matthew Price soured the Terriers’ win with Price expected to miss a good part of the remainder of the season.

Not the start coach Rod Loy was hoping for after his side was decimated by injuries in the early rounds of the 2013 competition. James Jerome scored the visitors lone try. Dempsey Boney was the best on field for the visitors.

SPORTERS WIN FOR BYRNES

THE first official games of the BRL Ladies League tag season got the “thumbs up” last Saturday with games played in Stanthorpe and Texas.

The game is based on league rules with tackles replaced by the removal of tags attached to the girls’ shorts. The game is quicker than touch football and differs from OzTag as it uses the full rugby league field.

Many of the dyed in the wool rugby league spectators were taken aback by the pace of the game and more than one reckons these will be the fittest girls in the district by the end of the season.

Tenterfield, who had a couple of years playing League Tag in Group 19 were a little too slick for the Gremlins’ ladies’ side.

PAUL Byrnes was the winner at last Sunday’s Sporters round in Stanthorpe. He finished ahead of runner-up Alex Cameron. Terry Byrnes and Hannah Reeves figured in the rundowns.

John Spiller had a real field day. He took out the best gross, the pin shot on the 12th and the pro pin. It was left to Rob Reeves to snaffle the remaining pin shot at the 17th. Meat tray winners were Rod Werner and Neta Thouard.

Sporters makes way for the annual Maureen Bates Memorial Day this weekend and organisers are hoping for another big field. A two-ball nine-hole ambrose is the order of the day which commences at 9am with a shotgun start.

The barbecue and bar will be operating and there will be a multi-draw raffle as well as some top shelf prizes for winners. This is normally one of the stand-out days on the golfing calendar.

The shoot was conducted with overcast conditions but the rain held off with pleasant enough conditions. Following the shoot we had a barbecue lunch with Rob Bondfield passing anacdotes of his grandfathers time in the World War I, followed a talk from Bruce Ferguson about the Light Horses involvement during the WWI. To bring things a bit closer, John Skinner talked of his experiences during the Vietnam conflict. A great day and a chance to think of the sacrifice by all members of the armed services during times of conflict.
