Attempted murder

By MELISSA MEEHAN AFTER months of investigations, Yarra Ranges CIU detectives have laid attempted murder charges following a violent attack in Yellingbo in February.

The assault, that shook many in the area, left the victim in a coma - and police believe he may never recover from some injuries.

He is now out of hospital, but in a rehabilitation hospital.

Detectives, supported by Eastern Region Division Two investigations and response units arrested five people and executed five pre-dawn search warrants on Wednesday morning in Wantirna, Bayswater, Ferntree Gully, Rowville and The Patch concluding Operation Cruso. The Mail believes, the investigation took detectives around the state.

rested in relation to the alleged assault which is believed to have occurred on Macclesfield Road on 4 February just after 6pm.

A 51-year-old Warburton man was found seriously injured on the side of the road after he went to the aid of a female acquaintance whose vehicle was broken down.

Wantirna man, 28-year-old Karl Ravenhorst, faced Melbourne Magis-

trates’ Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody to appear at a co mmital hearing in July.

A 53-year-old man from The Patch, a 25-year-old Wantirna woman and two 21-year-old men are currently assisting police with their inquiries.

During the raids, police also seized an amount of cash, a number of pills and powder believed to be methamphetamine.

A 31-year-old Menzies Creek man was also arrested on Tuesday night and has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury, armed robbery and other serious assault charges. He has been bailed by police to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 29 April for a filing hearing.

A 37-year-old Warburton woman was also interviewed by police and is expected to be charged on summons.

Anzac Day early for residents EMERALD retirement home residents were a day early when they marked 99 years since Australian troops landed at Gallipoli.

Emerald RSL held a remembrance service at Lifeview Emerald Glades on 24 April for residents who can no longer attend the traditional Dawn Services on Anzac Day. The event included a wreath-laying, The Ode, the Last Post, readings, an afternoon tea, two-up and piano entertainment.

“Many of our residents are ex-servicemen and women who would have attended the traditional dawn services in years gone by,” Lifeview CEO Madeline Gall said.

“It’s important we help carry on this tradition in our homes, so residents can continue to lead active and fulfilling lives.”

Residents also enjoyed a traditional gunfire breakfast on Anzac Day.

IN THE cold and misty early hours of Friday morning, the silhouettes of locals made their way through the streets to the Memorial Gardens.

Gathering to pay respects to the fallen Diggers, Mount Evelyn and neighbouring residents gathered for the 2014 Anzac Day Dawn Service to pay respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Mount Evelyn RSL president Roger Boness said the crowd of an estimated of 2500 people made it the town’s largest ever service.

Mr Boness said the RSL is overjoyed and overwhelmed at the number of people who attended.

“It is very much appreciated,” he said.

“This year was extra special with the unveiling of our new mural and Mount Evelyn resident Gary Park being the recipient of one of only five 2014 Anzac Day awards.

“I think the ambience of the bush setting and the presentation of the garden also helps in making the Mount Evelyn ceremony extra special.”

Community leaders and servicemen attended including Mount Evelyn Flight Lieutenant Shaun Toussaint who described what Anzac Day means to him.

In the wilds of winter

By REBECCA BILLS WILDLIFE carer Carolyn Seeger is calling on all drivers across the hills to be extra vigilant of native animals on the road with winter approaching.

Ms Seeger, The Monbulk Wildlife Shelter owner and leader, said coming into winter most pouches were full and a lot of people who hit animals on the roads just left the injured wildlife, without checking for young.

“My message is if they could move the animal off the road where it is safe and check the pouch as a lot of times that is how I get all these babies,” she said.

“A lot of kangaroos, wallabies and wombats all have young in their pouches this time of year coming into winter.

“They will die in the pouch in the cold if people don’t pull them out and rescue them.”

Ms Seeger said just through winter alone more than 50 injured animals were cared for at her shelter.

“I’ve got carers that volunteer and we also work with other carers and shelters in the area,” she said.

“There are people who specialise in caring for the really tiny animals and others who specialise in the bigger ones like I do.

“Most animals take around two years before they are released again.”

Ms Seeger urged those who came across injured wildlife to call a wildlife helpline.

“Ring Help for Wildlife or Wildlife Victoria to ensure the animal gets the care it needs,”

Student shows off his militar y histor y had protecting the nation with students and teachers at the school.

“My family have continued to serve their country and now me, a fifth generation in the Australian Air League Cadets,” he said.

Ray presented the Military Medal that his great, great grandfather was awarded for bravery in the battle of Polygon Wood near Ypres, France, as well as a medallion given to widows of the soldiers, diaries that were kept, letters dating back nearly 100 years, his shaving kit and harmonica.

Ray also showed photographs of Australian soldiers training in Egypt in preparation for their time in France in World War I. Ray’s mother, Tina McAllister, formerly a Robertson, said she did not realise how extensive her family’s involvement was in the first

and second world wars. “We are very fortunate to have so many trinkets and memorabilia all in one location, which is very rare,” she said.

Silvan Primary School principal Damian Tirchettt said it was great to see the history that Ray had in his family, especially in the lead-up to Anzac Day. “To see him really engage the students with his presentation and have that family history alongside that ability to be proud of what his forefathers have done to help out country is wonderful,” he said.

Ray said this Anzac Day was extra special for him.

“I am actually quite impressed that I come from such an honourable family,” he said.

“Anzac Day is now a lot more important to me than it was before.”

EMERALD’S former police station could be purchased by Cardinia Shire Council.

Councillor Brett Owen planned to raise a motion at last night’s council meeting, that council officers prepare a report outlining the potential benefits to the community.

Cr Owen said that the building could be used by a number of community groups, if the state government offered it to council for purchase.

Police appeal after verbal attack MONBULK police are calling for witnesses to a vicious verbal attack on an autistic man on Easter Monday.

Senior Constable Peter Edyvane said the 20-year-old man, who was well known in the town, and his mother were walking down Main Street at 8.15pm when they were ver-

bally attacked by a man driving a white Ford F100 ute.

“The victim’s autistic tendencies mean that he often touches cars and shop doors as he walks by,” Sen Const Edyvane said.

“The driver of the ute viciously abused the man and his mother, screaming expletives in

their direction before driving off.

“But then turned around and followed them down a laneway as they rushed home.”

Sen Const Edyvane said police wanted to speak to the driver of the ute.

POLICE are investigating a series of deceptions where a stolen bank card has been used to make purchases at several locations in the eastern suburbs over two days.

Police believe the card was stolen from a car parked outside a residence in Kelvin Drive, Ferntree Gully, on 26 February.

Shortly after, the stolen card was used to make purchases at two service stations and a fast food outlet at the intersection of Ferntree Gully Road and Burwood Highway, Ferntree Gully.

The following day, the same card was used to make purchases at several stores in Chirnside Park, Vermont and Croydon.

Several internet purchases were also made with the card.

Police have released images of two men they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.

Game’s up for Two-up law RSLs that want to play a game of Two-up in the week leading up to Anzac Day will not need to seek ministerial approval anymore.

A simplification of legislation governing Two-up games is providing a welcome change to Anzac Day celebrations with RSLs able to lessen their paperwork load in the lead up to the event.

Minister for Liquor and Gaming Regulation and Eastern Victoria Region Edward O’Donohue joined candidate for Monbulk Mark Verschuur at Upwey-Belgrave RSL with president David Eaton to announce the changes last Thursday that were recently passed by the Victorian Government.

Mr O’Donohue said until now, if RSLs wanted to play Two-up on Anzac Day or on the days leading up they needed his permission.

Though Ray’s grandfather, William Harlock Gladstone Robertson, broke with tradition by not joining the army, he, however, climbed the ranks of Victorian police.

Railway project well on track DURING the 2013 Federal Election campaign, I pledged that if elected, an Abbott Government would contribute $3.56 million to the Yarra Valley Railway.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I joined Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs at Healesville railway station to sign the contracts, releasing $3.56 million to the Yarra Valley Railway project.

Hoons help rescue

By MELISSA MEEHAN AN IDEA born in Lilydale could make the difference between life and death for someone injured in a car accident.

Last week Lilydale SES volunteers demonstrated how seized hoon cars will assist in Jaws of Life training for road accident rescues.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells and Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe attended the exercise which saw two abandoned hoon cars that have been seized

by Victoria Police ripped apart by Lilydale SES Unit volunteers as they practised car crash rescues.

The idea is the brainchild of Lilydale SES volunteer and local paramedic Shaun Caulfield.

“I saw a story on the news about police being able to seize hoon cars,” he said.“And it seemed like a waste to have them squashed into scrap metal when the SES and CFA are scratching to get cars to train on.”

So Mr Caulfield put the idea to MP Christine Fyffe while she was visiting to have a look at a new truck.

“She seemed to like the idea and got on the phone straight away,” he said.

“It’s great for us because we are able to train on cars that we would normally be going out to.

“We used to rely on donations, and they were great, but the newer model cars have different metals and mechanics - so we’ll be better prepared.”

Lilydale SES had been to 1000 call-outs in the past decade and while there are fewer crashes each year, Mr Caulfield said being able to train was priceless.

He said that a few finer details were being worked out about who pays for the cars to be transported from the impound yards to the local emergency crews.

“At the end of the day these are what we need to train on,” he said.

“One car can be three training sessions knowing what to do could be the difference between life and death,” she said.

Mr Wells said: “Last year, the Victorian Coalition Government was pleased to announce its support for a Victoria Police initiative that will see forfeited or abandoned hoon cars provided to CFA and SES for Jaws of Life training.

“For the first time, SES volunteers and CFA members will have access to an ongoing supply of cars that can be used to simu-

late the rescue of a person trapped in a car.

“Previously, these agencies had to rely on donations from wreckers or the local community and, while gratefully received, these vehicles were often not representative of the more modern types of vehicles that are encountered by road rescue crews.”

Hoons who refuse to pay their fines and impoundment costs at the expiry of the impoundment period will have their vehicle deemed abandoned and it will become the property of Victoria Police.

The Road Safety Act 1986 gives the Chief Commissioner of Police the authority to sell or otherwise dispose of a motor vehicle that is subject to a forfeiture order.

Ward funds face ban

By JESSE GRAHAM WARD funds are set to be banned state-wide following a governmental report that praised Yarra Ranges Council and condemned Cardinia Shire Council, and community groups may feel the impact.

Councillor Discretionary Funds (CDFs) will be prohibited under the Local Government Amendment (Governance and Conduct Bill) 2014, which is set to go through Parliament in the coming month.

Discretionary Funds - also called ward funds - are given by councillors to community groups and individuals at short notice.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister said the impact may be felt by small groups that needed funds urgently.

She said that few councils in Victoria made use of CDFs but that they had their uses in getting money to community causes - such as local sportspeople competing in elite-level competitions - quickly.

Cr McAllister acknowledged that there was a need for transparency and accountability in the way that councils spend money, and said it was too early to assess the impact of the legislation.

“There’s strong support at council for quick-release funds for smaller community needs,” she said.

“If the bill goes through we will look at how we can still provide for smaller needs while being compliant.”

Should the bill pass, all money being spent by councils will go to a formal resolution, rather than using discretionary pro-

cesses in an effort to make funding allocations more transparent and accountable.

The ban on CDF policies will not reduce funding available from councils, but re-directs how they are allocated to community groups and individuals.

Cardinia Shire Council’s Manager of Governance Doug Evans said the council had not formed a position about the proposed legislation.

“At this stage Cardinia Shire Council has not established a position on the specific contents of the bill and it is not known if the bill will pass in its current form,” he said.

The bill follows a report by the Local Government Inspectorate in October last year which assesses discretionary fund policies in 32 councils which still made use of them.

The report singled out Yarra Ranges Council as one of seven councils that demonstrated good practice in their ward fund programs.

However, it said that CDF programs generally exposed councils to integrity and transparency risks.

Cardinia Shire Council, meanwhile, was singled out as having “no policy or guidelines” in regards to distributing CDFs and the report said no public information was given on where funds went.

Following being contacted by the Inspectorate, Cardinia Shire Council reviewed its existing policies and incorporated more accountable measures.

Tribute to the fallen

By MELISSA MEEHAN ANZAC Day services across the Dandenong Ranges saw hundreds, if not thousands, pay their respects to fallen soldiers.

The crowd spilled into the street at the Monbulk Dawn Service, in chilly conditions - as they were treated to a live rendition of the New Zealand anthem by local Tina Bull.

Much time was spent on a wreath that spelled out the word Anzac standing at the gate of the RSL. It was well worth it as many commented on its beauty.

At Upwey, the main street was closed as Diggers marched up the hill to the RSL. They were applauded as they marched by with many youngsters waving the Australian flag.

The applause erupted as some energetic former servicemen and women, some unable to make the march up the hill, waved excitedly as they passed the crowd.

The biggest crowd of the three would have to have been the service and march at Sassafras.

Lucky to have the 134 support company from Dandenong as part of their march, and an address from their captain Neil Cater - young and old were able to remember those lost.

Formerly of Britain, and now in the Australian Army, Capt Cater spoke of his first Anzac Day in Australia. He read a letter to his commander back in Britain to the crowd, and spoke of his feeling of belonging and pride to be a part of such a day.

Studios open doors

By REBECCA BILLS IT’S the one weekend in autumn where artists around the hills open there studios so anyone can experience the artistic world that flourishes within.

The 2014 Dandenong Ranges Open Studios is the 11th year the event has run and is an opportunity for art lovers to take a behind-the-scenes look into the life and work of some of the finest artists this region has to offer.

Artist Emma Jenkins will be opening up her Ferny Creek garden cottage this year as part of the event.

Ms Jennings creates intricate paintings in gouache and watercolour on traditional Japanese papers, museum grade prints and cards with archival bamboo paper alongside a large range of decorative wrapping papers.

Open Studios co-ordinator Amy Middleton said Ms Jennings was delightful.

“Her detailed work is testament to the sweetness of her character,” she said.

“I am thrilled with the standard of artists taking part in the program this year.

“As well as those studios that are renowned for being part of Open Studios, we also have some incredible new talent for visitors to enjoy.”

One such talent is Upwey resident Jessie Yvette Journoud-Ryan who will be showcasing for the first time her mosaic works created largely by recycled crockery found in op shops around the hills.

Her studio located in Burrinja Cultural Centre has been the place of creation of works inspired by crockery.

Ms Journoud-Ryan said she moved from the hills to France when she finished her primary school studies for six years.

“It’s interesting, years ago I did all my secondary schooling in France and as part of my Year 11 and 12 studies, I attended a national ceramics school in Burgundy,” she said.

“In the last four years, I’ve gone back to that interest.

“There really is a joy out of making something new out of something that has been broken.”

Ms Journoud-Ryan said she first visited Open Studios three years ago

and was blown away by the wonderful authentic experience.

“It is so rare to rock up to an artist’s house and have a chat,” she said.

“It’s such a real personal experience and added a real person dimension to the artwork itself.”

The 2014 Dandenong Ranges Open Studios program will see 32 sculptors, painters and designers across the region open their studios with visitors able to participate in workshops, classes and demonstrations as well as purchase pieces directly from the artist.

For those planning on visiting the open studios, they can download a guidebook complete with information on the weekend’s events, participants, studio opening times and places to eat from the Dandenong Ranges Open Studios website at www.openstudios. org.au.

Dandenong Ranges Open Studios Weekend is on 3 and 4 May with all studios open between 10am and 5pm.

IT’S one of the biggest fund-raisers of the year.

The Upwey Fire Brigade is getting ready for its 43rd annual jumble sale.

A popular annual event in the hills, the jumble sale attracts many hundreds of bargain hunters - and raises between $12,00014,000 each year.

Upwey Fire Brigade Captain Paul Mather said he was thrilled with the number of items that had already been donated for sale.

“We get a real kick from knowing that people keep their saleable unwanted items for our sale,” Capt Mather said.

“We are already very busy picking up furniture, crafts, books, collectables and other items.

“In fact, we seem to be busier this year.”

Capt Mather urges people to get in early.

“It’s an exciting time when we lift the barricades at 9am, there are always around 100 people or more ready for the scramble,” he said.

“The early birds certainly get the bargains like antiques and the more valuable items as we price to sell.

“This year will be very special and hopefully even more rewarding for those who will be attending” So grab a bargain on Saturday 3 May between 9am and 3pm at the Upwey Fire Station.

By MELISSA MEEHAN IT’S important to live your life to the fullest, especially if you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Fernlea House staff last week put on their fancy pants and dresses to spread some cheer in the life of their guests.

When a loved one becomes terminally ill, a flurry of medical appointments, treatments and worries take over your life in a way you’d never expect.

Often family members become the prime carers, giving up their own lives to make what’s left of their sick relatives life.

Sometimes, they forget that they themselves need a break, others have no idea where to go when they need a helping hand.

Fernlea House in Emerald started up 10 years ago, and provide respite care for people with life limiting conditions so that their carers can have some time to themselves.

They have over 50 trained volunteers and work to ensure they live up to their motto “Living, Laughing and Loving”.

While they rely on Federal Government care, there is still a gap that they need to pay for so that volunteers can continue their pick-up service, great activities and recruit and train new volunteers.

Each year, Fernlea House holds a fund-raiser, last time it was the anti-deb ball, and this year they will hold a Fantasy Ball on Saturday 17 May at the St Thomas More Hall, Belgrave from 7pm.

Tickets are $20 each. BYO drinks and nibbles.

A year of firsts

By DAVID ALLERGRETI BAXTER Maiwald seems to have the world at his feet, yet the 15-year-old Emerald teenager remains as down to earth as they come.

Maiwald recently won the State under-17s Championships in Down Hill Mountain Biking for 2013/2014 and also came third in the National Championships at Bright, not bad for his first season on the circuit.

“It was pretty amazing. This season was my first season racing at the under-17 level and coming into it I was just hoping to be in the top 10. After the first round I was in the top five and thought maybe I had a chance at doing alright,” he said.

This unexpected success early on in the season only served to further motivate the already driven young man. After securing his first win in the second round of the downhill BMX competition, Maiwald decided to step up his training in order to maintain his peak form.

While Maiwald has been blessed with natural talent he backs this up with a vigorous training regime which includes weekly gym sessions as well as leg and core work, and of course, lots of riding.

Off the back of his recent achievements the young athlete has not lost focus - maintaining that at school he’s just another guy.

“Nothing’s really changed, a lot of people know I do alright in what I’m doing but most people don’t exactly know what I am doing. It’s a hard sport to explain, not a lot of people know about it but I think that might change in the next few years. It’s getting more popular and also the media is starting to cover it a lot more.”

A gleam of determination in his eye shines through Maiwald’s otherwise humble demeanour as he speaks about his prospective future in the sport he loves.

“My long-term goal is to represent Australia in the World Cup - Australia has a junior downhill team which they pick each year so I’m hoping to get selected for that when I’m old enough.”

Maiwald will be eligible for selection in 2016, until then he plans to keep on training and competing. While his rise has been meteoric, it has not been an easy journey for the talented rider. Maiwald cracked his rib during the practice run of

what was meant to be his first nationals race.

“It stressed me out thinking that I wasn’t going to be able to race,” he said, describing his initial reactions to the injury.

He did, however, push through the pain barrier and went on to complete his final three races, all while harbouring a rather serious and not to mention painful injury.

Although Maiwald is a relatively fresh face on the downhill BMX scene, his love for all things two-wheels was sparked long ago.

“I was riding a motorbike when I was about three years old. Then when I was a bit older I started watching videos on YouTube of downhill and I thought it was cool. I asked dad if I could start racing and it all took off from there.”

When asked if he had any advice for prospective young riders, Maiwald responded with a charismatic smile.

“Just have a crack to start off with and see how you go. Pick someone faster than you and ride with them, but most of all just enjoy it.”

Fuller aces the field

By BROC REYNOLDS GOOD conditions, apart from a gentle shower that wafted across the fairways at Emerald Golf Club, greeted members for a sedate round of stableford.

When all cards were tabulated it emerged that Dennis Fuller (13) had 41 stableford points which was just enough for him to win over-all and in A Grade.

In B Grade it was Peter Glasscock (19) who was the winner on a countback from Ian Cranston (17), who also ran in with 36.

Those who played well without victory were Fuller’s two next door neighbours, Travis Gerbes (9) on 40 points and on the other side, Andrew Cutting (11) on 38.

Damien Gray (12) played very well for 38 points as well to show that a win is not far away.

Davis Mackey (16) and Stuart Courtney (16) both played to their handicaps for 36 points.

Gray won the Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pin on the fourth and 12th, Peter Jones on the seventh, Gerbes on the 13th and Ross Martin won the pro pin lolly on the 18th.

Stephanie Town was a run-away winner in the ladies’ competition from Leanne Morison who promises to do better next round, like all golfers, ever the optimist.

Wednesday’s Obviously Furrowed Golf (OFG) was a convoluted, complicated and interesting 4BBB round contrived by Mike Litchfield during a sleepless night.

After all calculations had been done it emerged that the team of Bob Kennedy, Graeme Fergus and Brian McCoy finished with 114 points.

On their tails were the quartet of Mike Litchfield, Ben Balfour, Ian Scott and Dennis Fuller who scored 11 followed by Ken Sumsion, Sepp Krummenacher and Mick Petrie on 106.

Pennant was not played this week, but next Thursday The Emerald OFG team head to Amstel to take on the opposition in the final of the seniors’ event while the handicap crew take on the Wellington Links team.

Anzac battlefields of green ROUND three played host to three very big YVMDFNL Anzac Day clashes.

Warburton Millgrove fought back to have a 42 point turnaround in the last to beat Healesville.

Upwey Tecoma was in control all day and comfortably accounted for Belgrave while up at Kinglake, Brendan Fevola fought admirably and kicked five goals for Kinglake but it wasn’t enough to account for the rampaging centre line of Yarra Glen.

Upwey Tecoma 20.12 (132) d Belgrave 11.18 (84) Upwey look to be getting back to their best form after a comprehensive 48 point win over Belgrave.

Upwey set its victory up in the first quarter with a stunning eight goal quarter and holding Belgrave to just the two majors.

Belgrave did come back slightly in the second term and reduced the margin to 26 points at the half time break but Upwey put the game beyond doubt in the third with another eight goals to two term with the margin a huge 67 points.

Belgrave did outscore Upwey in the last four goals to two to make the scoreboard a little more respectable but make no mistake Upwey was far and away the dominant side in this match.

Monbulk got out to a 14 point lead at the first break before Mount Evelyn reeled that in to just four points at half time. The third quarter went goal for goal in what was a battle of the defences and by the last change it was Monbulk by just two points.

The last quarter saw Monbulk more efficient with the ball forward as it had five scoring shots to produce 4.1 while Mount Evelyn had seven shots to score 2.5.

This meant Monbulk walked of with a gutsy 10 point victory and its season right on track.

Olinda is a very fit side and the players showed it in the last as their run through the middle was first class.

It then stretched that to 71 by the last change and then romped home with a nine goal to two last quarter to record a massive 116 point victory and show it is very much looking at going backto-back-to-back.

DIVISION 2 SENIORS Powelltown 13.12 (90) d Gembrook Cockatoo 10.10 (70) Powelltown remains undefeated after a gutsy 20 point win over Gembrook which is yet to break through for a win this season.

For three quarters this game was very tight and it was Gembrook that held a narrow lead for the best part of those three quarters.

UNDER 18s Upwey Tecoma 13.13 (91) d Belgrave 2.11 (23) The margin may have been just four goals at half time but this game was always in Upwey’s keeping.

And just to make sure of it, it booted six goals to just three behinds in the third term to race to a 59 point lead at the last change.

The last quarter was pretty much a non event with Upwey scoring two goals to Belgrave’s one to win by 68 points in a workmanlike performance.

Healesville 11.20 (86) d Warburton Millgrove 2.4 (16) This was a pretty scrappy match but it was one that Healesville dominated throughout.

It held Warby scoreless in the first quarter while it managed 3.3.

Healesville stretched the lead out to seven goals by three quarter time.

The last quarter was a bit of a shocker for both sides.

Warby didn’t score while Healesville booted an incredibly inaccurate 3.10 which still saw it win, but it should have been by a lot greater margin.

Monbulk 26.15 (171) d Powelltown 0.0 Unfortunately sometimes there are games that one team is just dominant over another for the en-

tirety of the four quarters and this was one such game.

Monbulk showed no mercy as it booted nine goals to nothing in the first quarter to set the tone for the day.

The second quarter saw better from Powelltown from a defensive point of view as it held Monbulk to three goals but it failed to score itself.

The second half was all Monbulk as they slammed on another 14 goals to win by 171 points and leave Powelltown scoreless in a game it would rather forget.

Mount Evelyn 16.14 (110) d Yea 15.5 (95) This was great game of Under 18 footy put on by two very good sides.

This game ebbed and flowed for the best part of four quarters with the winner still in doubt midway through the last quarter.

Mount Evelyn did have more of the ball and more opportunities which was the difference in the end but Yea was very good in front of goals which kept it well in touch throughout the match.

There was only 10 points in it at three quarter time in Mount Evelyn’s favour and the scene was set for a great last quarter.

Mount Evelyn booted 4.5 and probably should have iced the game sooner than it did but it did come away with what was a terrific 15 point victory.

Olinda Ferny Creek 14.14 (98) d Wandin 7.6 (48) It was only a nine point margin at quarter time in Olinda’s favour but after that it was virtually all Olinda.

It booted five goals to two in the second term to go into the long break with a five goal lead.

Olinda stretched that lead to 49 point by three quarter time on the back of a four goal to one quarter.

Emerald 10.11 (71) d Woori Yallock 4.4 (28) For three quarters this was a really hard fought game with few goals being scored.

At three quarter time Emerald led by just two goals.

The last quarter saw Emerald all of a sudden find a heap of run that Woori just couldn’t combat.

It booted 4.7 and held Woori scoreless, in fact Woori didn’t score in the entire second half which is a testament to Emerald’s defence and a big reason why it came away with a 43 point victory.

PUFFING BILLY RAILWAY 33rd Great Train Race – Sunday May 4, 2014

ROAD CLOSURES – HOW IT AFFECTS YOU

Great Train Race Local Community Groups invaluable with this year’s Great Train Race This year, Puffing Billy has gathered a larger number of volunteers to assist with the traffic management of the Great Train Race. We have local community groups involved in the road marshalling, the drink stalls and the en-route assistance to the 3300 runners, and car park coordinating for all their enthusiastic supporters.

Numerous volunteers eagerly offer their assistance to construct this event; The Country Fire Authority and local Fire Brigades, St John’s Ambulance Australia, the Victoria Police, The Glenhuntly Athletics Club, 145/37 Foresters Venturer Scout Unit, Emerald Secondary College, The Shire of Yarra Ranges, The Shire of Cardinia Council, Rotary Club of Emerald and District, Emerald Lake Park and all the Puffing Billy volunteers. They all contribute in making the event as smooth and unobtrusive to the local residents and businesses as possible.

Variable Message Signs are placed throughout the hills, and there is a leaflet drop to the local residents about the road closures and traffic delays for the morning of the Great Train Race day (Sunday 4 May). On this date, the runners enjoy the unique opportunity of a brisk run through the beautiful and picturesque Dandenong Ranges and competing against the strong and majestic Puffing Billy Train.

The race gives visitors from across Melbourne another slant on the charm of the area. Puffing Billy encourages sightseers to visit the local shops and businesses in Emerald and Belgrave on the day of the Great Train Race to support and appraise our local fare and cuisine.

Much thanks needs to be expressed to all the volunteers at the event. Without sharing their time and resources, the Great Train Race would not be the event it is today.

On Sunday May 4, 2014, the following traffic management safety controls will occur on roads between Belgrave and Emerald Lake Park. This will affect the race route and surrounding roads between 7am and 1pm.

Below are instructions in each of the five (5) designated areas, along with Estimated times when major roads will be closed.

Motorists are required to obey directions from Police and Traffic Controllers and be aware of runners on the roads.
