A LACK of support has sounded the death-knell for an organisation dedicated to helping local wildlife.

However the group’s immediate past president David Bishop said that doesn’t mean that the local injured native fauna would be left to fend for itself.

Mr Bishop said the Warwick Wildlife Care and Rescue Inc had been wound up following the February members’ meeting.

“It was a difficult decision made for a number of reasons”, Mr Bishop said.

“But primarily, unfortunately after 12 months we have been unable to garner sufficient member and community support to sustain the association any longer.

“We would like to acknowledge and thank Telstra Shop Warwick, Spicers Peak Lodge, Alsco and Warwick Woodcrafters for their support, and members of the public who donated second-hand materials. These will continue to be put to good use.”

He stressed that the winding up of the association didn’t mean that Warwick and surrounds no longer had a dedicated wildlife care and rescue team.

“Only the association has been wound up,” Mr Bishop said.

“We’ll continue to provide wildlife care and rescue services via a network of individually licensed carers locally. We want to assure members of the public that we are still here and able to help when they find injured or orphaned wildlife, and they have only the one rescue hotline number to remember.”

The network will continue under the registered name Warwick Wildlife Care and Rescue and will maintain the cen-

tralised rescue phone number - 0447 108 619 - and a call register of licensed carers operating in the region.

They are also still closely working with Granite Belt Wildlife Carers to ensure full coverage of the Southern Downs region.

Carers on the register are self-funded volunteers.

“The winding up of the Association means that we can no longer actively seek public donations and support from local businesses - and no such approaches will be made,” Mr Bishop said.

“If any businesses do receive requests for support supposedly coming from Warwick Wildlife, we would urge them to contact our rescue phone to seek clarification before making any donations of money or goods.”

“We’re also maintaining the website and Facebook page to share information, we just no longer have members or the association structure,” he said.

The network intends to continue with the objective of educating the public about wildlife issues, and has recently presented to the local Guides and Kidszone Vacation Care.

“If any local group is after information on wildlife related issues, feel free to give our rescue phone a call and we’ll see what we can do to help”, Mr Bishop said.

Tourists will flock again

By TANIA PHILLIPS TOURISM was the big winner in Warwick at the weekend and the town looks to be just as busy this weekend with Anzac Day and the 2014 National Veteran and Vintage Chevrolet Association of Australia rally.

Head of Warwick Tourism Tracy Vellacott said whether people were camping with family and friends at a picturesque Southern Downs spot including the very popular Lake Leslie, watching the polocrosse action at Morgan Park, on an antique and collectible bargain hunt at the showgrounds, or racing cars in time trials, there was lots to smile about this Easter.

And she said the tourists would be out again this weekend.

“The organising committee has selected Warwick as the site for the 2014 National Veteran and Vintage Chevrolet Association of Australia rally, to be held from 26 April to 2 May,” she said.

“Organisers have been working with Warwick Tourism and Events to develop a program of interest for

an estimated 200 people (80+ cars) who will arrive in Warwick ready for an exceptional Southern Downs experience.

“The current itinerary includes a Show ’n’ Shine in Leslie Park, rally runs into the Granite Belt, Killarney and other drive areas, a special hire of the Downs Dasher steam train for a trip to Clifton and a taste of Warwick’s rodeo heritage and bucking action with an event at the Rodeo Heritage Centre.

The “welcome” function will be held at the Warwick Art Gallery on the first Saturday evening (26 April).

“Rally participants will provide a welcome tourism injection into the region of new visitor dollars in excess of $200,000 - 200 visitors for a week who will utilise local accommodation, fuel and food establishments, as well as taking trips to regional attractions.”

Organisers have secured the promotional support of Warwick Tourism and Events for this event and are keen to work with local businesses as well as council to put the Southern Downs region on a national stage.

Mayor’s message on meaning of Anzac ANZAC Day ceremonies will be held throughout the Southern Downs on 25 April and Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell is looking forward to participating in these special events.

Cr Blundell said the Returned Services League and the Veteran Services and Advocacy Services Australia have organised a number of ceremonies throughout the region to allow all community members the flexibility to select a service that

best suits their timetable.

“As most residents would now prefer, the Warwick services include a Dawn Service, ceremonies at the War Graves Cemetery and Eden Gardens Memorial Park and an 11am service at the cenotaph in Leslie Park.

“A similar program of Anzac Day services has been arranged for the Stanthorpe community, as well as services in many of the smaller communities within the Southern Downs Region including Killarney, Tannymorel, Al-

lora, Leyburn and Wallangarra.

“These are solemn occasions however where we celebrate the strong feeling of mateship of our diggers and that Australians are grateful for the free and democratic society they live in.

“We are seeing an increase in numbers at Anzac parades, and I’m pleased our local communities take time to participate and to encourage children to understand and appreciate the Anzac legend and spirit,” he said.

Diggers’ courage, sacrifice and determination are legendary TAKE time to reflect this Anzac Day, that is the message from local Federal Member for Maranoa and former Veterans’ Affairs Minister Bruce Scott.

“I believe the Anzac legend means: Courage to do what was asked of them; Determination to never give up regardless of the risk and Mateship knowing their mates would never let them down,” Mr Scott said.

Ninety-nine years on from the Gallipoli landing, he has called on the Maranoa to remember the true meaning of Anzac.

“During the early dawn on 25 April 1915, our nation’s identity was forged when Australian military troops rushed ashore at Gallipoli,” Mr Scott said.

“They didn’t know it at the time, but a legend was created

that day and that’s why Anzac Day is a commemoration, not a celebration.

“It’s on occasions like this, we reflect and talk about the Anzac spirit and what that spirit means to each of us.

“The time-honoured meaning of the Anzac legend is a possession for each of us to treasure and remember.

“For more than a decade, our troops have seen continuous deployment on operations overseas, often in complex, challenging and extremely dangerous environments.

“During Australia’s operations in Afghanistan, 40 Australian Defence Force (ADF) members have been killed and 261 have been wounded. For some of our veterans, mental and physical injuries resulting from their military service will

last a lifetime.

“This Anzac Day there will be about 2000 ADF personnel deployed overseas.

“In recognition of the increasing number of recently returned Australian veterans, I encourage everyone in the Maranoa to and an Anzac Day service and to make a lasting contribution to ADF personnel and their families by donating to an ex-service organisation dedicated to supporting our serving men and women.”

The Drake community will hold a service at the war memorial commencing at 6am, followed by breakfast in the Drake Community Hall. Councillor Tom Peters will present a book to the Drake Primary School in lieu of laying a wreath.

A commemorative service will be held at 9am at the Liston War Memorial where Councillor Gary Verri will lay a wreath.

TENTERFIELD Shire’s councillors will be out and about commemorating Australia’s fallen at Anzac ceremonies across the shire.

The mayor will begin the day at 5.30am, delivering the address and laying a wreath at the Dawn Service at the Tenterfield Memorial Hall and Cemetery.

He will then travel to Legume Cemetery for a commemorative service at 8am before heading to join the Urbenville Community for their services and events, beginning with a service at St Mark’s Anzac Memorial Church, Urbenville at 9.30am.

Following the service, the march will assemble in the main street at 10.45am and proceed along Clarence Way to the Memorial Gates at the Urbenville Showground for the service at 11am.

POLOCROSSE once again proved a major drawcard for Warwick with more than 3000 people turning out to see the opening round of the Queensland season in the town over Easter.

Warwick Polocrosse Club President Les Fraser, who estimated the crowds at between 3000 and 3500 for the three days, said competitors had travelled from as far north as Howard Springs in the Northern Territory to Young in New South Wales and Victoria in the south.

A total of 492 horses and

riders (65 club teams and 17 teams in the Barastoc Interstate competition) took part over three-days of state representative and two-days of club level polocrosse games.

Hosted at Morgan Park by Warwick Club, the first carnival of Queensland’s Polocrosse season was well attended with the carnival attracting 82 teams.

Some 17 teams of six players from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria took to the field to do battle for state pride at the seventh annual Barastoc Interstate Series.

The Barastoc Interstate Se-

ries comprised of eight different levels of competition; Mens, Womens, Under 21 Mens, Under 21 Womens, Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Mixed Masters and Mixed Under 30’s. The Mixed Under 30’s was a new inclusion to the competition and was the first time this level had been played in Australia.

New South Wales dominated the interstate series, clinching victory in seven of the eight divisions, including the men’s and women’s interstate competitions. The junior girls team was the only team to secure a win for Queensland.

on display A further 65 clubs teams competed in the Shell Cup and club competition, where, in a replay of last year, host club Warwick beat Wandoan in a battle that saw Warwick hang on in the dying minutes of the game to take out the Shell Cup by just one point.

Mr Fraser said it was a big roll-up for the first carnival of Queensland’s polocrosse season.

He said the competition was strong as representative players used this as a warm-up for attending the National Titles in Darwin in July.

“It was a good hit-out for representative players, coaches and team managers to see how players and horses were performing in the lead up to the Nationals,” Mr Fraser said.

Established in 1953, Warwick Polocrosse Club is thought to be the oldest club in Queensland.

Warwick Polocrosse Club boasts one of the world’s premier Polocrosse facilities.

Seven fully turfed Polocrosse fields, one of which is floodlit for night games, and impressive facilities for the horses, including undercover stalls, is one of the reasons that the Warwick carnivals are so well attended.

Their forward planning has seen a lot of infrastructure put in place for spectators and those camping on grounds.

Warwick Polocrosse Club has a long history of producing both junior and senior representative players, including numerous Australian players.

Warwick Polocrosse Club’s commitment to the sport has seen it build long-standing relationships with their sponsors. Barastoc, who sponsored the 2007 World Cup at Morgan Park have continued their association with Warwick Polocrosse Club, confirming their

sponsorship of the Interstate series through to 2015.

Mr Fraser said Polocrosse was a fast paced team sport played on horseback. It combines the speed of polo, the strategy and tactics of netball (in terms of the field being divided in to three sections), the toughness of rugby and AFL, and the ball handling ability of lacrosse.

This unique sport originated in Australia in 1939 and is dubbed as the “king of the one-horse sports.” Polocrosse is currently played in 18 countries and boasts more than 10,000 players worldwide.

The next polocrosse competition in the south-east zone will be held in Tansey this coming weekend.

Warwick Polocrosse Club will next host the Warwick Rosebowl Carnival on 23 and 24 August.

By TANIA PHILLIPS WITH perfect weather, Leslie Park was definitely the place to be on Saturday for the annual Easter Fair.

“The Easter Fair was a wonderful success, with numbers on par with previous years,” Warwick Tourism and Events CEO Tracy Vellacott said.

“Bugs our bunny was a huge hit with the children, along with the jumping castles, pony rides and animal nursery, chocolate egg and spoon races, as well as crafting bunny ears.

“We had 100 markets/foodies in the park and the feedback was very positive from the many I spoke with.

“As with any markets, it’s hard to predict what is going to be a big seller on the day but one stallholder reported their takings were up by two thirds

on the previous year.

The Salvation Army and Cancer Council stalls were struggling to keep up with the demand for their sausage sizzles, and all of this to a wonderful backdrop of local entertainment.

Tracy said it was a very successful weekend for tourism on the Southern Downs.

“There were lots of happy people in the park and I think this was indicative of happy ‘campers’ all over the region for the Easter break,” she said.

Toowoomba mayor Paul Antonio also attended last week’s ceremony, which was held in the original CareFlight hangar at the Clive Berghofer CareFlight Centre in Toowoomba.

Last year, a third of all RACQ CareFlight Rescue missions involved patients in Queensland’s South West.

Since RACQ CareFlight Rescue began flying from its Toowoomba base in 2006, it has treated and transferred more than 1648 patients.

Chopper honour for Berghofer HE’S a well-known name on the Granite Belt and Southern Queensland and now philanthropist Clive Berghofer is set to be even better known in the region.

The South West Queensland legend Clive Berghofer’s dedication to the community and RACQ CareFlight Rescue was honoured late last week with the lifesaving service naming a helicopter in his honour.

“Clive was a key supporter of CareFlight being based in South West Queensland,” CareFlight chairman and former Queensland Premier Rob Borbidge A.O. said.

“Last year, 477 missions were flown from the Toowoomba Base.

Graft and corruption Blind trust OUR Westminster system of government isn’t coping too well with all the corruption we see in the political scene. The electoral system is suspect, what with losing ballots, and people voting in the names of others.

ID should have to be presented to prevent fraudulent voting.

We pay for investigation after investigation, at great expense, but nothing seems to change for the better. People are losing faith in a system that once was accepted as being honest and trustworthy.

In other countries, where voting is voluntary, voters are staying away from the polls in droves because they too have lost faith in the system and notice that nothing changes for the better; no matter who is elected. The same would happen here if it wasn’t for compulsory voting. So we have multitudes who aren’t informed, but go and vote for fear of fines.

Compulsory voting must be done away with and then only the informed and truly interested would be voting.

But that would not suit the Lib/Lab Party as they benefit from the present system.

In brief Crash free for Easter LARGE numbers of visitors took advantage of the great weather in the Granite Belt during the Easter period but despite the large number of visitors, the area remained free from traffic crashes.

Police also took part in Operation Unite over the weekend targeting alcohol-fuelled violence in licensed premises however no liquor related offences, including assaults, were attended by police.

Drugs siezed A CONSIDERABLE number of drug offences were detected

by Stanthorpe and Wallangarra police during the past week both in vehicles and as a consequence of search warrants on premises.

Search warrants on three premises, two in Stanthorpe and one in Wallangarra resulted in the seizure of cannabis, amphetamines and drug paraphernalia, while similar property was located during the search of seven vehicles, four in Stanthorpe and three in Wallangarra.

Twelve offenders were charged and will face Stanthorpe Court in May charged with a variety of drug offences.

Vehicle fire POLICE are investigating the wilful destruction of a vehicle by fire after it was located ablaze in Jimmy Mann Road, Broadwater shortly after midnight on Saturday.

Austin Sprites are nimble

By TANIA PHILLIPS WARWICK was abuzz with the sound of the legendary Austin Healey Sprites as the region played host to the Sprite Club National Challenge.

More than 60 of the cars, famously driven and loved by some of the big names of racing over the years from Stirling Moss to Paul Newman, came from NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland to take part in the event.

An important part of the Sprite racing calendar, the challenge is held and hosted by a different state every two years.

Organiser John Robertson of the Queensland Sprite Club said it was a big year for the host club.

“For the first time ever in the 40 year his-

tory of the event, Queensland took out the overall trophy,” he said.

Mr Robertson, who has been collecting and driving the cars for the past 25 years and now has four, said it was the first time since 2008 that the club had hosted the event, with Warwick also the venue in 2008.

He said Warwick was the perfect place for such an event with a “great racetrack” and plenty of places to stay and eat.

The club held a social event on the Saturday with the nippy little British cars travelling 250km around the Granite belt with a picnic in the park on Sunday followed by a timed rally along a marked circuit on Albert Street.

He said of the cars would be back in Victorian David Osbourne has spent 10 years working on this Warwick in late May for the annual sprint American built 1969 MG Midget and was more than happy to show it off in Warwick on Sunday.

Digital highway hits high speed as NBN rolls in for town residents

By TANIA PHILLIPS TENTERFIELD residents will be among the more than 4700 farms, homes and businesses in the Northern Tablelands region who will soon be able to switch on the National Broadband Network.

Residents are encouraged to visit www.nbnco.com.au/rollout/rolloutmap to find out if their premise is included in the coverage footprint.

The NBN has gained further mo-

mentum in rural and regional New South Wales, with physical construction commencing tomorrow (23 April) on new fixed wireless installations.

Following a thorough planning and consultation phase, these NBN facilities will service more than 4700 farms, homes and businesses across parts the following regions and communities: including Tenterfield and surrounds, Wallangarra and Ashford on the Northern Tablelands.

NBN Co spokesperson, Tony Gibbs,

said the fixed wireless service could bring better broadband to the bush.

“For decades, rural and regional Australia has been left behind when it comes to telecommunications,” he said. “The fixed wireless service is designed to provide access to internet speeds and bandwidth that many in the big cities currently take for granted.

“The NBN also means you can get the whole family online at once, opening up opportunities for local farms, businesses and the wider region to par-

ticipate in the digital age. Fast broadband can help deliver improved access to health, education and entertainment over high quality video links.”

On average, it takes around 12 months from the start of construction until residents and business owners can order NBN retail services from telephone or internet service providers. More information will be provided to residents about how to connect as construction nears completion in each area.

Marshall welcomes new premier MEMBER for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall has welcomed the announcement of Mike Baird as the 44th Premier of NSW with Gladys Berejiklian to serve as deputy leader of the NSW Liberal Party.

“I congratulate Mike on his successful selection as the Premier of NSW and the leader of the NSW Liberal Party,” Mr Marshall said. “I’d also like to congratulate Gladys on being promoted by her peers.

“I have a very good working relationship with both Mike and Gladys and I look forward to continuing that relationship in their new roles to achieve good outcomes for the Northern Tablelands electorate.

“Sudden though this change has been, it’s a good opportunity to take stock and have a good look at where the government wants to head over the next 11 months.”

Mr Marshall said that with the leadership issue now resolved quickly, it was time to get back to the important business of governing and delivering.

“Country people have a lot of issues that we need to be fighting hard for, so I’m pleased we can now get on with this important work,” he said.

“I will be issuing an invitation to the new premier to visit the Northern Tablelands soon.”

What’s On Mill showcases diverse art THE popular, annual, ‘It’s a case of Art in the Mill’ opens on Friday night 2 May at the historic Ballandean Case and Timber Mill.

Transformed into a rustic art gallery for the weekend, the exhibition building in Curr Road, Ballandean, features vibrant new works, from 12 artists, from across the border region.

Now in it’s 14th year, the event features artists and artworks which

include water colours by emerging artist Emily Coelli; water colours by Allan English inspired by his travels; acrylic, pencil and water colours

by Ben Moxham; mixed media by Margaret Oban Dowe; natural plant hand dyed fabric wall hangings by Sue Jurd; and Gaye Deanne Fraser’s ‘visual cameos’ created in different art forms and mediums.

Three-D artwork includes Maggie Brockie’s clay wildlife sculp-

BOWLS SOUTHERN CROSS NOT a lot to report from the Cross after the Easter break as no bowls were played.

COMING EVENTS This Saturday will be the men’s meeting at 11.15am - all men are welcome to attend this meeting. At 12.30pm there will be the management meeting, followed by social mixed bowls at 2pm. Non bowlers are also welcome to come along and enjoy a game.

WARWICK THE final of the Club Singles Championship was won in style

by the 2013 champion Peter Gynther when he beat Jim Rickard 25-7 in the final last Saturday.

Unfortunately Jim was unable to maintain the magnificent form he showed in the semi finals.

GOLF TENTERFIELD VETERANS ON Tuesday, 24 Tenterfield Veterans were joined by two visitors from Ocean Shores.

The daily winner was John Gale on 37 points on a countback from Richie Tweedale also with 37 points. Several members are asking where this reversal of form has emanated from. Balls down the line went to Graeme Moore 35, Michel Cockburn and John Augustson 34, and James Shaw and David White 33. The 18th pin shot was taken by Richie Tweedale at eight metres, with best front nine going to Alan Hartley 17, and best back nine to Nev Emerson with 17 points on a count-back. Mystery Hole number eight was all square and Captain’s draw was Michael Wish.

Poor decisions mar top games

IT IS disappointing that after a weekend of outstanding football, most post-game discussion centres on poor refereeing decisions.

Talk of conspiracies is way off the mark, but the average punter players and officials are fed up with some of the outrageous decisions and monumental blunders served up in the past few weeks.

As we head into another great weekend of football, it is time for the boys at the top of the tree to show some leadership. Sort out the obstruction rule that has turned into a fiasco, hand control of the game back to the bloke with the whistle and although we won’t see it, I think most people would welcome the demise of the video referees. Until some of these issues are addressed, farcical decisions are set to continue but hopeful-

ly not too many in round eight which gets underway with three great games on Friday to celebrate Anzac Day. In Sydney, the traditional clash between the Dragons and Roosters get the action underway.

DRAGONS V ROOSTERS THE Dragons ended a three-game losing streak with 20-10 victory over the Warriors. Josh Dugan was seen at his best in the three tries-to-two victory. Gareth Widdop continues to impress as the Dragons showed much more in attack than the NZedders. The Dragons put sirengate firmly behind them to score a big win at Kogarah. It will bring them plenty of confidence as they head into their Anzac Day clash with the Roosters.

I READ a column penned by Gus Gould over the Easter break. It was a tongue-in-cheek look into the future of rugby league where the results of games were not available for days after the games as they were viewed, reviewed, reviewed again, analysed and all the bio-mechanics of the players’ movements scrutinised.

It was amusing and far-fetched but with a smattering of truth - perhaps closer in parts to the truth than we might think.

It is hard to fathom some of the recent stuffups. I yearn for the days where you had one ref with a whistle. The players played to the whistle - the refs on occasions got things wrong, although I recall they could count and tell the time. The general consensus was that what you missed on the merry-go-round you picked up on the Ferris wheel - the good the bad and ugly somehow balanced themselves out.

Now we have two referees on the field, linesmen with eyes painted on - for they rarely if ever see anything from the best seat in the house; a video ref and a former player - who are obviously tuned in to The Simpsons or a game of cards, not the action on the field and of course replay after replay along with expert opinion from former players, some of whom should be seen and never heard. And still the monumental stuff-ups continue.

Now comes talk of a major bunker where a panel of four or so will be able to watch every move on some super wall-sized floor to ceiling screens and be wired to the ref. Hope that’s not all four at once, or the man in the middle

will go stark raving mad.

The cost of this technology is said to be prohibitive but the idea is certainly gaining momentum and has the backing of several of our foremost coaches.

Great - would love to see everything cleaned up BUT at what cost. There seems to be no outcry that bush football; grassroots football is dying before our eyes - NSW country football has been a basket case for several years and across country Queensland numbers playing the game are falling. At grassroots level those who love the game wait and wait to see the benefits of the latest sensational media deal coming flooding through. Not even a trickle has yet to be forthcoming and there are no apparent changes on the horizon but I am sure a bucket of dollars will soon be heading for “the Bunker”.

MARYVALE FATHER SON MATCH THE Father and Sons Charity Cricket Match to be played at Maryvale on 31 May is starting to gain momentum.

Last week John Buchanan confirmed that both he and his son Nicholas will play and will also attend the charity dinner that evening. Buchanan joins keynote speaker Ian Healy and his son Tom. Heals will also be participating in some capacity in the game.

Proceeds from the evening function will help a seriously ill Maryvale youngster, Angus Bowers who is suffering from Pallister Hall Syndrome and also the Maryvale Cricket Club.

GREMLINS HOST TIGERS THE Stanthorpe Gremlins get their home season underway this weekend when they host the Tenterfield Tigers.

The Tigers wrapped up a big win against a young and inexperienced Texas side three weeks ago and will be expecting stiffer competition at Sullivan Oval on Saturday.

The Tigers had several players selected for representative duty in Miles following that home game and coach Brendan Minns will be looking for those and others to step up here.

This weekend the mayhem should have abated in time for the annual Anzac Tribute Shoot. The competition gets underway at 9am sharp. Entry fees will include a spit roast meal.

Local Sport The Warriors face the Storm at AAMI Stadium in the traditional Anzac Day clash, a ground where they have won just four times in 15 visits. The Warriors have not won the Anzac Day encounter since 2011. On current form, they will have to wait at least another year for their next win.

It was a dour win and the Panthers need to be smarter at closing out games.

The Panthers will be aiming to put back-toback wins together for the first time this season on Saturday, but will have their work cut out.

BRONCOS v RABBITOHS A superb defensive display helped Brisbane to a big win in Newcastle. The Broncos tackled the Knights out of the game with determined, desperate defence when they were starved of possession early in the game.

The Broncos goal line defence was first class.

Broncos fans have been waiting for Ben Barba to fire and on Friday night the stars aligned and he was back to his mercurial best. He finally found the try line to post his first four pointer for the club and played a hand in two other tries. As Brisbane established their authority in the game, Barba applied the polish to a good win.

A Trent Hodkinson field goal two minutes from fulltime stole the chocolates from the Bunnies on Good Friday. It came at the end of a bruising encounter.

The obstruction rule was once again the elephant in the room after the narrow loss. Souths coach Michael Maguire was left like many others bewildered at the interpretation of the rule. The Bunnies were left with plenty of walking wounded after the game.

On the back of their performance in Newcastle, the Broncos look like they will have the goods to win this battle.

CRONULLA v PENRITH THE shock return from injury of inspirational captain Paul Gallen had an immediate impact on the Sharks. Gallen marshalled his troops and went toe to toe with the premiers. It was a game where the result could have gone either way.

The Sharks would not go away, levelling the scores at 12-apiece, then 18-all, before a late Roosters try just eight minutes from fulltime denied them a much-needed win. The refereeing debacle did not help the Cowboys cause and while they have every reason to feel robbed by the officials (again), they should have put the game to bed long before the incident occurred.

The Eels/Tigers clash was billed as the game of the round and it didn’t disappoint. A Tigers field goal and successful penalty conversion was the difference at full time.

BULLDOGS v KNIGHTS THE Doggies made NRL history when they posted their one-point (15-14) win over the Bunnies.

The Bulldogs are the first club in history to win three consecutive one-point games.

In a show of courage and character, the Bulldogs fought back to claim another last-minute win after falling behind early. Once again the Bulldogs did not find the lead until the 78th minute.

Newcastle Knights are set to be without Willie Mason after the prop was slapped with a grade two shoulder charge following the game against Brisbane. Jeremy Smith is also unlikely to play.

He is struggling with a left-knee injury sustained during pre-season. It is another blow to the Knights after their loss to the Broncos.

Against Brisbane, they had a number of attacking opportunities, but couldn’t crack the strong Broncos defence.

While the Knights didn’t get the result, they had a number of strong performers, but are struggling to find some momentum.

Newcastle won all three meetings with the Bulldogs last season but it is hard to see a repeat of that form here.

SEA EAGLES v CANBERRA THE Eagles left it late in but they swooped and snatched a last- minute win albeit in very controversial circumstances over the Cowboys. While Manly were pleased to get the points, they came at a price. Adding to their injury woes, Anthony Watmough sustained an elbow injury but of most concern is a knee injury to five-eighth Keiran Foran who could miss a month.

Canberra Raiders continued their good form against the Melbourne Storm with a heart stopping, come-from-behind win in the capital on Easter Sunday. With only seconds left on the clock, the Raiders hit the front for the first time when Jarrod Croker successfully converted a Paul Vaughan try. The Raiders showed plenty of desperation and their never-say-die attitude served them well. Of course, their cause was also helped by another dose of refereeing mayhem.

Manly has a tough task on their hands here, but should get home with the Brookvale advantage but an upset is not out of the question.

Youngster Luke Brooks was outstanding for the Tigers in their win against the Eels.

TIGERS v TITANS THE Tigers were without their captain Robbie Farrah against the Eels on Monday, but surged late to come from behind and grab a 21-18 win in a sensational game.

The Tigers trailed for the majority of the match, but clawed their way back, thanks to some outstanding work from Luke Brooks and Pat Richards - a combination of youth and experience. A Brooks’ field goal in the 78th minute followed by a penalty conversion gave the Tigers the points. They have now won five of their last six games.

The Titans went down in a tough gritty arm wrestle against the Panthers on Monday night.

Despite a late comeback from the Titans, the Panthers held on through a nervous final set of six to notch an ugly win. Titans co-captain Greg Bird will come under scrutiny after being accused of a “squirrel grip” on Penrith’s Sika Manu.

If the Tigers reproduce their form against the Eels, the Titans will fall short again.

Local Sport PICTURE PERFECT AT ’GARRA GOLFERS across the district could not have asked for more perfect conditions than over the Easter weekend and it was no different on the Wallangarra course last Saturday. There was a change to the event - a two-ball ambrose quickly became a single stableford with many regulars out and about on Easter duty. Kevin Williams’ winning run continued last weekend, adding Saturday’s prize to his recent impressive haul. Williams’ score was an impressive 39 points ahead of runner-up Kevie Schultz.

The Pin Shot at 3/15 went the way of Johnny Green and Denis McMeniman had success at nine. One more gust of wind and it would have been an ace according to those in the know. The 11th and approach were missed again. Peter Williams had a win with the jackpot at 10.

This Saturday play is in the Reg and Cath McMeniman 4BBB with partners drawn before the game. Forecast is for mostly sunny with a top of 22, another perfect day for a round of golf. Visitors are always most welcome at the ’Garra.

TIES ALL ROUND A GROUP of keen social bowlers hit the greens at the Summit Bowls Club on Monday, keen to work off the excesses of Easter.

There were ties all round and not the neck variety. It was 19-all at the end of the triples game between the team of McGlashan, Wilmot and Capelli and team Zamprogno Mungall and Hartley.

Not sure what was in the chocolate this Easter but in the other triples game there was another 19-all tied game between Smith Empen and A. Zamprogno who played White Newlands and Thomas. Very suspicious results. Conspiracy theories are not confined to the NRL. On Saturday M. Sweeney and R. Capelli managed to get a result in their game against R. Newlands and T. Sweeney 25-18. Atillio Zamprogno and Keith Mungall had that winning feeling when they defeated McGlashan Jamie Zamprogno 2921.

Attention is now turned to the Anzac Day tournament and barbecue. The afternoon gets underway at 2pm and wraps up with a barbecue following the game. Visitors are most welcome and the club can provide all the necessary equipment for you to have a roll-up.

FOLKERS WINS LAURIE NEWLEY TROPHY DANNY Folkers made Easter 2014 a memorable occasion with a win in the popular Laurie Newley Memorial trophy stroke event. Folkers returned a score of nett 65 and went within a whisker of improving on that when he just missed out on an eagle at the 13th.

Three players, Mark McCosker, Mark Hendry and Dylan Barraclough all returned a nett 70.

Mark McCosker won out in the countback, relegating the other pair to the rundown.

Kev Rowling did best, taking the pin at 3/12.

Mark Hendry held on at 17. Pro-pins went to Rick Kelly at 1/10, Brendan Barker at 5/14 and Fred Wharton at 9/18.

Peter Patti featured in the rundown with nett 71 and also claimed a ball for the longest putt of the day. Some 60 metres on the course is said to have morphed to at least 100 metres or more in the clubhouse.

Lyn Ludlow returned to the winners’ circle with a win in the ladies’ event, carding a nett 73.

Making sure to keep things in the family, Rachael Hendry was runner-up with nett 78 and also took the ladies’ pin at 3/12. Kay Webb picked up the approach at 17. Neta Thouard collected the ladies’ rundown ball.

JOHNSON CONSIDERS AVAILABILITY MITCHELL Johnson recently revealed that he may need to reconsider his availability for Australia in all three forms of the game - Test, ODI and Twenty20 - in order to ensure he achieves his driving ambition, the 2015 Ashes series in England.

While indicating that 50-over cricket might also jeopardise his capacity to continue performing at his best at Test level, Johnson confirmed he was hopeful of making the Australian squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup to be played in Australia and New Zealand next February and March.

Although Johnson was a member of the Australian squad that won the event for the third consecutive time in the West Indies in 2007, he was relegated to permanent drinks waiter, not playing a game. Johnson is keen to be involved in the 2015 World Cup, especially knowing that the white ball game provided his springboard into the Test team. His attention is squarely focused on the 2015 Ashes series in England and if it means he forgoes a World Cup then so be it.

FIELDS DOWN BUT NOT THE SCORES WITH many taking the opportunity to escape for the Easter weekend, the field for last week’s Red Rooster Rumble was confined to 15 players. The field may have been down on numbers, however the scores certainly were not. Winner was Kath Morrison with 23 points after a countback put her ahead of Jason Owens. Pins went to Skinner at five, seven and nine.

A bigger field found their way on to the greens in the B&K Motors Single Stableford on Saturday with 33 players turning out.

Bob Lester claimed the prize and bragging rights with a score of 40 points narrowly in advance of Peter Morrison who finished close behind with 39. Rundown balls went to David Craggs (38), Cameron Scutts and Lenny Williams (37) and S. Mills (36). Pins went to Nathan Dionysuis on 5, Peter Morrison on 7, 9 was Grodie Russell, 11 was Tony Kahler, Phil Drewery on 13 and Cameron Scutts.

RAMS STEP OUT IN 2014 THE Wallangarra Rams make their first appearance in 2014 when they travel to Texas on Saturday. The Rams had the bye in round one and did not play in the round robin. They are an unknown quantity at this stage and all eyes will be on their performance on Saturday.

Texas is fielding a young and relatively inexperienced side but will be keen to get a home win and the two points on offer. Leading the way for the Terriers will be Bennett Sutton, who had an eye-catching game in the recent trials and earned himself selection in the South West Country side.

The Rams will also field a ladies’ side in 2014 and will have their work cut out against the Texas girls who were convincing winners over Tenterfield in a recent trial.

IPL INJURY FOR AUSSIE QUICK AUSTRALIAN quick Nathan Coulter-Nile could be out for an extended period after injuring a hamstring playing in the Indian Premier League.

The West Australian suffered the injury diving to field a ball in the first over of the game between his Delhi Daredevils and the Chennai Super Kings.

He left the field immediately and did not return for the remainder of the game. It is believed that team officials expect Coulter-Nile to be “out for some time.”
