KILLARNEY is set to gain a major tourist icon with the unveiling of a new sculpture that has been five years in the making.

Timber-getters and bullock wagons brought people to Killarney in the past, and now the small Southern Downs town is hoping people will be drawn here again and provide a major economic boost.

Five years in the planning and making, the newest attraction is a sculpture of bullocks pulling a tallow wood log on a wagon.

The sculpture, to be situated opposite the town’s Heritage Centre in Willow Street, is hoped to become a major tourism attraction for the small town, according to Heritage Centre president Tony Pearson.

“It will be a major tourist attraction,” he said.

“A real boost for the town,” he added.

Mr Pearson said the project, funded by the Queensland Government’s Regional Arts Development Fund through the Southern Downs Regional Council, had involved a large number of people with local sculptor Paul Stumkat providing the last major piece of the project, creating two life-sized bullocks.

Mr Stumkat said the bullocks, created from fibreglass, had taken six months to craft, with their lifelike eyes coming from the US. He said they were now finished and all ready to take up their new home.

History comes alive

By TANIA PHILLIPS VENUES across the Southern Downs turned back the clock for the annual Heritage Weekend celebrations.

There were displays of mechanics at the Allora and District Historical Society, as well as history walks and talks around Warwick, steam train rides and displays of photographs, articles and artefacts at the Killarney and District Historical Society Heritage centre.

It was a chance to remember the past or find out what it was like to live in the Granite Belt before computers and even before cars.

Letters It’s no placebo ON THE ABC on 9 April comments were made stating that there is a lack of evidence for homeopathic medicine and that it is placebo.

Homeopathy is used widely in Europe, India, and as example in France 40 per cent of GPs use homeopathic medicines with patients.

The Cuban govt during a 2007 epidemic gave a homeopathic medicine to 2.3 million people at high risk of infection, while the remaining 8.8 million population were untreated.

In council’s application to IPART for the huge rate rise over 10 years, 20 per cent has not been identified and 12 per cent or $1,533,000 is earmarked for the main street master plan.

Council has already spent 12 per cent of income from the rates rise over the next 10 years.

Plus there are the grants which we were told should cover the main street costs. The grants so far are over $600,000.

Do you remember this statement at the rate rise meetings? - “some maintenance and a few trees”. This was stated at the council rate rise meeting by a senior member of the “management team”.

People at these meetings assumed council was listening to their rather vocal opposition to this spending. We should’ve known better. Can’t wait for the marble steps outside the Post Office.

You are being ignored by this dictatorial council.

Stop Press: New rate rise: $1 a week environmental rise in our rates costs $52 per annum. Multiply by say 4000 ratepayers and we have $208,000 per annum extra in rates. This is supposing all will be charged, $1 per week. I would assume

Oh, what a mess IT IS a shame that Allora is in an apparent mess re: streetscape. I would like to offer a possible solution. As there happen to be so many unemployed, both here in Warwick and probably a number in Allora, perhaps these people could be put on ‘Work for the Dole’.

I realise that in some people’s eyes this is a tantamount to communism but honestly, work, in whatever form it comes in, is better than sitting at home twiddling your thumbs doing nothing, playing endless computer games, going to the pub and drinking your unemployment benefit, or going to the gaming rooms and putting it through the pokies.

I, for one, would consider it a far more worthwhile, honourable, and confidence builder, to myself (and especially if I had a family) to be able to work. I am now over 60 and consider it a privilege to be able to go to work albeit for no remuneration just to keep my ‘hand in’.

I worked for the dole both in Tenterfield at a second-hand clothing store, and in the communication sector, and again when I moved to Warwick I worked in a second-hand clothing store and enjoyed each place of employment. I never once considered it to be a ‘communistic’ type of employment.

Wholesome life envisioned

On 12 April, a formal ceremony was held at Muli Muli, between Urbenville and Woodenbong, to launch the ‘Protecting Our Places Project’ which is organised by the core group of ladies consisting of Marion Close, Freda Jarrett and Rebecca Green along with other members whose main aims are gaining opportunities to assist in their dream of a safe and healthy community for all families.

Their projects have included a Healthy Eating Project for Aboriginal Communities, a Governance Training Project; “Getting Down to Business”, the Crime Prevention Project implemented

by Kyogle Council, have seen the development of a Community Garden, a gym for personal use to promote fitness and wellbeing and a basketball court.

by Elder Amos (Micky) Close, Jennifer Williams dance leader performed with several local children, Freda Jarrett gave a heartwarming speech of their vision shared, Robert Boota spoke of the

The $25,000 was funded by NSW Government Community Funding Partnership.

Elders, Dorothy Williams cut the ceremonial ribbon and Effie Roberts cut the cake concluding the official part of the day then all adjourned to enjoy a delicious luncheon and relaxed with friendly socialising.

Youth and talent create major impact

By TANIA PHILLIPS NATIONAL Youth Week lived up to expectations, giving voice to many young people in the Southern Downs Region.

The week ended on Sunday with a grand finale and movie night at the Warwick Town Hall.

SDIEA (Southern Downs Industry Education Association), headspace Warwick and Southern Downs Regional Council combined to stage the final event.

Southern Downs Regional Council Youth Development officer Hailey Cosh said the National Youth

Week theme was ‘Our Voice Our Impact’ and many young people had taken the opportunity to talk and be heard.

“There have been many highlights but a major coup for the Southern Downs is that we joined with ABC Open to run some digital workshops,” she said. “ Young people aged 12-25, had the opportunity to use their own digital media devices or loaned devices by partners Southern Downs Regional Libraries to take photos and make a short movie around the youth week theme.

The movies were then screened

on Sunday at the Warwick Town Hall in an event open to all in the community as a celebration of the talent and skills of the young people in the region.

“We encourage community members to come along - these youth movies are outstanding and their ideas are really inspiring,” Hailey said.

“The staff from ABC Open have praised the high standard of work and are looking forward to showcasing the talents of local youth.”

Ms Cosh thanked partners SDIEA (Southern Downs Industry Education Association), and head-

space Warwick for staging National Youth Week events.

“This year has created a real buzz and excitement around the Southern Downs and I’m pleased that we can focus community attention on so many good things young people are doing,” she said.

“I also want to pay tribute to other partners and supporters, EDGE Southern Downs, Soular Music Services, Voyage Fitness, Warwick Twin Cinema, Gold Drum Recordings and Events for making all of these our events possible and for encouraging young people to have a voice,” she said.

Orchards blitzed FAIR Work Ombudsman inspectors are visiting apple and pear orchards in the Granite Belt all this as part of an ongoing focus on seasonal harvest workers.

They have been making unannounced visits to properties selected at random to speak with growers and labour hire contractors about their obligations under federal workplace laws.

Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said they were also encouraging pickers and packers to come forward to ask any questions they have about their pay and conditions.

Ms James said improving awareness was the main focus of the visits, but any non-compliance issues that came to light would be addressed.

“We can tell a lot about an employer’s level of compliance by talking to them and their workers, but we’ll look at time-and-wages records if we need to get a clearer picture,” she said.

The Fair Work Ombudsman has enlisted the support of key stakeholders, including Apple and Pear Australia Limited, to help promote the presentation and orchard visits.

Ms James said the Fair Work

Ombudsman continued to receive underpayment complaints from seasonal harvest workers and many are substantiated.

Last year, the agency finalised 11 complaints from workers at apple and pear orchards in the Granite Belt region and recovered a total of $15,400 for nine workers at three businesses.

Over the next few years the Fair Work Ombudsman will visit dozens of fruit and vegetable farms throughout Australia as part of its focus on the entitlements of seasonal harvest workers.

“We want to ensure employers understand and meet their workplace obligations and we’re also seeking information about industry factors that influence compliance levels,” Ms James said.

“This knowledge will help us to better target our education and campaign activities, particularly in relation to the overseas workers employed in this sector.”

After treatment, mayor’s back in the chair SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell is receiving treatment for his manageable condition, sarcoidosis, but is back at work this week.

Speaking from Brisbane where he was receiving treatment late last

week, Cr Blundell said the treatment was progressing very well and he quashed rumours he was not returning to the mayoral chair.

“These rumours probably arise because I have been away periodically and I will be taking a break over Easter. However I will be back to work after Easter and of course

taking part in our region’s Anzac services,” he said.

In February, Cr Blundell, his partner Sarah Reeves and his family received confirmation that the mayor had been diagnosed with sarcoidosis and were told that with careful management, the condition was easily treatable with steroids.

THE final decision on the route for the controversial new 110kV powerline from Warwick to Stanthorpe has yet to be made and consultation is still continuing, according to Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg.

Late last month, a group of angry land owners vowed to fight against the planned “route five” proposal for the new powerline.

Up to 30 land-owners met with Ergon Energy project manager Rodney Lobwein at the home of one of the potentially affected residents in March to present their views, and have held several meetings since.

The landowners from the Warwick end of the proposed route said there had been a failure to consult with those directly affected by the proposed line and questioned Ergon Energy’s tactics and processes.

“It is never a popular decision to map out a pathway for power lines,” Mr Springborg said.

“I understand that their are people upset in the community and I urge each and every person to take their concerns to Ergon.

“Last week, I personally met with Ergon officials and I have been assured that a final decision has not been made. Each concerned resident can meet with Ergon representatives personally to discuss their issues. “Their has been some hullaballoo in the press recently around impacts of overhead lines on agriculture and I do not profess to know all of the answers but I am more than happy to refer queries to people that do have the answers.

All I can do is deal with the facts at hand.

“Ergon has given me their assurances that consultation will continue.”

Health tax stoush QUEENSLAND Shadow Health Minister Jo-Ann Miller has welcomed the LNP’s decision to rule out a new Tony Abbott-inspired tax on public hospital emergency departments.

Ms Miller said it was “about time” Health Minister and Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg “did something in the best interests of Queensland’s public hospital patients”.

“This minister has spent the last two years cutting services and sacking staff while trying to palm off community and primary health care services to the federally funded Medicare,” she said.

“But media reports suggest he has promised not to introduce an ED tax in Queensland. It’s just a shame Mr Springborg didn’t react as quickly to the doctors’ contract crisis, which remains unresolved.”

However Mr Springborg dismissed Ms Miller’s comments.

“In government, Joanne Miller was part of the team that commissioned the Allen Consulting Group to do a report on the health system,” he said.

“The report proposed a universal hospital outpatient co-payment of up to $50 per same day admissions and $100 for overnight to raise money.

“To date, Joanne Miller has never repudiated that report. She was silent at the time and remains silent on the secret plans that Labor was ready to unleash on the public.

“The Newman Government is committed to a free public hospital system yet the question remains; what would Joanne Miller intentions be if she was in government.”

Ms Miller said Tony Abbott shouldn’t be introducing a GP tax, and the Newman Government definitely shouldn’t be introducing an ED tax.

“I warned patients and their families last year when the LNP was trying to privatise the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital that this government wants your Visa card as well as you Medicare card,” she said.

“While the minister says he’s ruled this out now, Campbell Newman and the LNP have broken so many promises you would never put it past them to break this promise and start charging people who need emergency health care.

“Labor has always fought for a free, world-class public health system, which is why we welcome the Minister’s decision and promise Queenslanders that we will hold him to it.”

They said on a much brighter note however, the Cellar Door would remain open for wine tasting and sales of Preston Peak’s award winning wines.

“It will also continue to be an outstanding function centre, boasting state-of-the-art facilities available for private and corporate events, weddings, parties, anything,” they said.

Movers and shakers Zumba it up

By TANIA PHILLIPS NUMBERS were low but enthusiasm was high for the Zumba For Life Event at Warwick on Saturday.

The event was a fundraiser for the “Santa’s Little Helper Team” taking part in Warwick’s second annual Relay for Life, Cancer Council Fundraising event in September this year.

Organisers Ken and Bernadette Hartnett said conditions beyond their control had kept numbers low this time but they hoped that a second Zumba event on the drawing board for later in the year would be bigger and better.

“It was a bit disappointing numbers-wise - we probably only had about 20 people if

we were lucky,” Ken said.

“The day wasn’t the best and there were stacks of other things on around the town at the same time.

But we will probably have another one later in the year.”

And he said while they had only raised $150 after paying for the venue - it was still a start to their fund-raising campaign.

Planning is already underway for this year’s relay event, to be held at a new venue, the Redbacks AFL Ground.

The event won’t be held until 13 and 14 September but the committee is already heavily into the planning stage, hoping to make this year’s event bigger and better.

TENTERFIELD’S Main Street project is powering towards completion with the community assisting the local council to apply the finishing touches.

On Tuesday 8 April, Tenterfield High School students were on site at the High Street corner en masse to install nearly 2000 shrubs and groundcovers.

The remainder of the planting continued from there with the council’s parks and gardens crew and the Tenterfield Digger’s Club.

“It is great to see the enthusiasm for the project now that the tree planting has started and we can start to see what the architect has planned,” mayor PeterPetty said.

He was named as president at the club’s recent annual meeting, chaired by Peter Rodeck. He was elected for the 2014/15 year to succeed Trevor Sheeran. The official changover meeting took place yesterday 16 April.

THE Pirelli Southern Downs Road Race Series continued at Morgan Park Raceway, Warwick, at the weekend with round two hitting the track.

Competition heated up in all classes and events, grids were large and racers are focused, eager to prove themselves against strong and determined competition.

The club and state championship event attracted riders from all over Queensland with organisers proclaiming the event a success.

REVELLERS are bracing for another flaming good time as preparations start for this year’s Dalveen Rural Fire Brigade Backburners Ball on 3 May. Last year nearly 270 people converged on the Dalveen Hall to dance into the early hours of the morning to the Mic Travers Band from Brisbane.

Dalveen Rural Fire Brigade first officer Jim Mitchell said ticket sales had been steady, but expected the rest would sell quite quickly.

“The Mic Travers Band consists of a group of very talented musicians who play a wide variety of music including pub rock and blues,” he said.

“They play at a number of large festivals around the country.

“We have limited the ticket sales as the hall and surrounds can comfortably accommodate around 300 people, so it’s a case of first in, best dressed.

“This is our major fund-raiser for the year, with all proceeds going to the Dalveen Rural Fire Brigade.”

KERBSIDE recycling is set to be introduced to businesses and residents in Tenterfield and Jennings later this year.

The process of rolling out the service will begin in the coming months with mailouts and other information on what is recyclable and how the service operates, and the distribution of new yellow lid recycling bins.

It is hoped to have the service in place by 1 July.

“Kerbside recycling is a longstanding request from the community, and it is another example of this council’s capacity to get things done,” mayor Peter Petty said.

“The council has established a goal of 40 per cent reduction in waste to landfill during the current

four-year term and this is essential to achieving that goal. The great majority of councils across NSW have recycling programs in accordance with NSW state environmental policy, and now Tenterfield is doing its part to reduce waste to landfill.”

Recycling will be collected once a fortnight for all Tenterfield and Jennings residents and business who currently have a bin service.

The cost of the service will be an additional $1 a week to serviced properties.

Items that can be placed in the bin are: Paper and cardboard Steel cans (i.e, tuna etc.)

By TANIA PHILLIPS WARWICK Women are being asked to nominate for the Queensland Rural Regional and Remote Women’s Network Strong Women Leadership Awards.

Locally-based awards organising team member Sue Hamlet said she hoped Warwick and Stanthorpe women would get behind the event.

“We have some amazingly talented and hard-working women here in Warwick,” Sue said.

“We meet many of them at WOW breakfasts. Some of them are visibly high achievers, others are quietly doing wonderful things in their communities and business. With the support of the Strong Women Leadership Program, these women can go further and stronger in their careers or community roles. There will only be a handful of ‘winners’ but any who participate in the nomination process will be the richer for it, regardless of the outcomes on paper.

And it’s quite presitigious even to be nominated.

“Warwick is not ‘deep country’ but we are still rural and regional women here. We don’t need to identify as being ‘country people’ to qualify, nor be involved in a rural-focussed business or organisation.

“QRRRWN is a progressive, pro-active group and an incredibly supportive network to be in.

Women have found that the support and mentoring from past Strong Women Programs has given them the courage and nous to take on leadership roles and other award programs, such as RIRDC.” Sue invited local women to nominate themselves and/or women who they felt deserved recognition for their leadership skills in rural, regional and remote Queensland.

She said the aim of the Strong Women Leadership Awards program was to encourages all Queenslanders to identify, acknowledge and applaud the leadership strengths our rural, regional and remote women contribute to their local communities and beyond.

The program also provides a structure where QRRRWN can mentor and develop all entrants via a series of five monthly Awards Webinars during the program as well as providing a stepping-stone for women who wish to gain the confidence and skills to progress further to apply for other programs such as RIRDC Awards, Telstra Awards.

What’s On All the fair fun ALL the fun of the fair comes to Warwick again this weekend with the annual Easter Fair at Leslie Park on Saturday.

Now In its seventh year, the fair is presented by Warwick Tourism and Events - and group CEO Tracy Vellacott believes it is going from strength to strength.

“Our Easter Bunny ‘Bugs’ is always a big hit with the kids and event co-ordinator Julie Peterson will have children scrambling around the playground area in a free Easter egg hunt,” Ms Vellacott said.

Tourist officer Sheri Payne will run plenty of games and challenges to keep the kids entertained.

“We will again have a strong focus on providing fun activities for the children while the mums and dads enjoy a spot of market shopping or kick back and soak up the live music. Look out for the animal nursery, pony rides, jumping castles, old-fashioned games like the egg-and-spoon race, totem tennis, badminton and bubble blowing,” she said.

for all ages, with around 100 market stalls, live local music from Terry Arnold and Libby Brown, delicious food, recycled and re-used products, handmade treasures and even a medieval demonstration.

Keep your calm in a cool snap FROSTS can sneak up on gardeners. The first frosts of autumn can be the worst because the plants are not hardened to it and the last of the summer crops still await harvesting.

Again, in spring, new plantings can be wiped out by a late frost.

Frost is a surface coating of frozen water vapour, the result of rapid heat loss. Gardeners need to note that surface tem-

peratures (of plants, soil, etc) can fall below freezing, even though the air temperature remains above zero.

A commercially available product is frost-cloth - an extremely light, breathable fabric made from spun-bonded polypropylene. It can remain over the plants for long periods if necessary.

Frost-cloth is light enough

to be simply laid over the top of plants, but a low hoop structure, tunnel, or even just a few stakes to lift it slightly higher than the top leaves is helpful also.

It is important to ensure that the frost-cloth is securely anchored and sealed where it meets the ground. Remember this will hold the soil-warmth around the plant and prevent any breezes from removing the cloth.

Titans of the game gear up

By CASEY O’CONNOR AT the start of round six, there were plenty of pundits prepared to argue that the Titans were at the top of the table by default. At the end of round six many are eating humble pie prepared to admit that the 2014 Titans are at this stage of the competition on the money. After all it is hard to do more than win and keep on winning. We will have to wait until the final game of round seven to see if their form continues. Two tough games get the round underway on Friday night.

PERHAPS milestones are what the Bunnies need to get them over the line - in round five John Sutton eclipsed Bob McCarthy’s record as the club’s

most capped player and they found a win.

In round six Nathan Merritt wrote his own page in the club’s history book as he became the club’s most prolific try scorer when he crossed for try 145. In almost cyclonic rain, the Bunnies were asked to defend their line time and again and were up to the challenge despite a litany of dropped ball and indiscipline. Somehow, Souths managed to prevent the Panthers from crossing their line.

The Dogs crossed the ditch and inflicted more pain on the NZ Warriors. The boot of Trent Hodkinson took a bite out of their hide in the dying moments of the game with first a conversion and then a field goal as the Bulldogs pinched the points and scampered back to their kennel.

the hard way as the Warriors scored more tries. In the final heartstopping moments of the game, the throw of the dice definitely went the Bulldogs’ way. Canterbury’s season has been dealt a blow with Frank Pritchard facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious pectoral injury.

KNIGHTS v BRONCOS THE Knights looked a different side from the one trounced in Townsville in the previous round as they put the Raiders to the sword on their home patch. The return of Jarrod Mullens gave the side the direction they had been missing and added extra spark to a more confident Knights. Willie

Mason’s form continues to astound the critics.

In a surprise move Wayne Bennett promoted Zane Tetevano and Chris Houston from Newcastle’s NSW Cup team to the starting line-up.

Bronco’s fans were left shaking their heads last week. Their side looked in control against the Titans but poor ball control saw them squander their 6-0 lead and the momentum of the game.

The signs are good for the Broncos but their failure to close out some “should have won games” continues to cause concern. Ben Barba’s confidence has deserted him and his performance at CBUS will not have helped. Hodges is rusty but will improve with match play. This game could swing either way. Perhaps the Broncos.

Bushrangers go on trial The

LAST weekend the BRL Bushrangers played a trial game in Miles.

Up for grabs was selection in the South West Country side to play in the 47th Battalion carnival in Gladstone in May and the Outback Country Carnival.

From these two carnivals there are further selection opportunities on offer.

There is no way to gloss over the fact that the Bushrangers copped a good old-fashioned touch-up from a very polished Roma and District side.

That is not to say there were not some good performances from some Bushrangers players.

One of the good stories to come out of the game was the selection of Marc Emery for South West Country.

Emery is a French backpacker who has limited experience in rugby league but has quite obviously played his share of rugby union.

He is currently playing for the Gremlins and not only caught the eye of the local selectors but also their South West counterparts.

English may not be his native tongue but carrying the football forward certainly comes naturally.

In total seven BRL players were selected for the squad to travel to Gladstone.

Bennett Sutton of Texas was another who caught the selectors’ eye and I expect his game will step up a level with the experience he will gain playing in Gladstone.

I would like to make special mention of Tenterfield player Jake Kelly who lost his father last Friday after a long battle with illness.

Jake put that behind him to join the team in Miles knowing his Dad, his keenest supporter would have wanted him to play.

The Bushrangers side wore black armbands in his honour and a minute’s silence was observed prior to the game.

It took a lot of guts to play and I take my hat off to Jake.

I understand that I come from a football era that many possibly consider back with the dinosaurs and though it may surprise many current players, I have played more than my fair share of representative sport.

Back in the day of the dinosaur a good oldfashioned thumping was not cause for celebration on the long road trip home - rather a quiet ale and some sobering self-reflection.

It makes me wonder how seriously selection in a rep side is taken these days and whether it is more about the all important team shirt and camaraderie and less about the results.

From an administrator’s perspective that is a question that bears further investigation.

SEA EAGLES v COWBOYS AFTER falling into a Tigers’ ambush at their previous outing, Manly were primed and ready when they stepped on to Brookvale against the Sharks and took only three minutes to open the scoring.

It set the tone for the match as the Eagles big men showed what they were made of.

I was a performance that even put a smile on coach Geoff Toovey’s face.

Cowboys coach Paul Green had no cause for smiles as the Cowboys once again fired blanks in their game against the Tigers.

It is taking time for the Cowboys to find their rhythm under Green but he has urged the players to keep calm and fans to keep the faith.

Despite some of the best offensive weapons in the competition, the Cowboys attack is not firing - however they look to be not far off. They seem unable to turn opportunity into points.

The pressure to win is mounting - more wins will come but not here.

DRAGONS v WARRIORS HERE are two sides with much in common after round six. Both saw victory snatched from them in the spectacular circumstances.

Dragons fans who might have had a wager on their team were queuing to collect as the siren went on Monday night only to have a little bit of Melbourne magic snatch a try after the full time.

In the case of the Warriors, a week of high drama ended in horror as the Bulldogs snatched a win from their grasp thanks to an overturned penalty and the boot of Trent Hodkinson.

The signs were better for the embattled Warriors after a week which saw their coach sacked and their millionaire owners quibbling like kids playing marbles. The Warriors lost a couple of players during the game, however it was mistakes and failed completion of sets which them most.

The Dragons lost Dylan Farrell during the game with a shoulder injury and he may be unavailable for this game.

The side that handles their last round loss the best will win here and the Warriors who are not known for consistency are not my favourites here.

The Dragons to make amends.

The face of the Dragons player says it all - Winners are grinners – Mebourne players celebrate as the ref blows his whistle on their full-time try.

SHARKS v ROOSTERS THERE is little to be said for the Sharks’ performance in round six other than it was awful. Their coach blasted their performance against Manly as they conceded three tries in the opening 22 minutes.

The Sharks slumped to their fifth loss of the season and are swimming at the bottom of the pond with little sign of improvement. Captain Paul Gallen is still a couple of weeks shy of returning from injury and Todd Carney did not look 100 per cent and had a bad hair day-plus.

The Roosters also have their problems. After trouncing the Eels in game two, they were put under intense pressure by the home side and, despite some good work, are lacking that edge to finish their games with a win.

The premiers have homework to do to get their season back to what it was in 2013 but should have no problems posting a win here.

RAIDERS v STORM CANBERRA Stadium used to be one of the places away teams did not want to visit, however the worm has turned and it has becoming a happy hunting ground for visitors and a nightmare for the Raiders.

A trip to Canberra will hold no demons for Melbourne, who thrashed the Raiders 68-4 the last time the two sides met in the capital. In fact they have been successful at their past four visits.

Raiders youngster Anthony Milford played with his left knee heavily strapped against the

Knights and did not have the footwork and acceleration that baffled Newcastle four weeks ago.

The Raiders missed the X-factor he provides.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart found plenty to complain about after the game, accusing the Knights of deliberately giving away penalties to slow down the game, labelling it (the game against the Knights) a messy, ugly game of footy.

Hard to see that being his issue when the Storm come to town. They were simply sensational in parts against the Dragons and at other times disappointing.

Coach Craig Bellamy put the Storm win down to blind luck after they snatched the points from the Dragons’ clutches. The winning try came after the siren and on the back of some brilliant Storm razzle dazzle. They played a get-out-of-jail card on Monday night but need to fix the handling errors that are putting them behind the eight ball.

The difference is the Melbourne Storm know how to hang in there and find a win no matter how tough the circumstances. It’s a trait others need to learn.

It should be chocolates and smiles all round on Easter Sunday.

EELS v TIGERS SOME 12 months ago you would hardly have considered this match-up the game of the round.

The Eels have swum from the bottom of the pond in 2013 to the top of the tree and their enthusiasm is infectious. Under coach Brad Arthur they are producing a disciplined and committed brand of footy and it is paying dividends. Against the Roosters they turned a 12-10 deficit at half time into a win by keeping last season’s premiers scoreless in the second half. The win gave the Eels three wins on the trot - the first time since 2010.

Jarryd Hayne has his plane back on the runway and Chris Sandow, Corey Norman and inform hooker Nathan Peats are having a field day.

It may not last but the players and fans are certainly enjoying the ride.

When it comes to turnarounds, the Tigers’ 2014 performance is as spectacular as their 2013 was dismal. They, too, continue to defy the experts.

The fans who turned out for the game against

NQ (and their weren’t many) were treated to a gritty performance from the young Wests Tigers back line and a no-nonsense forward pack led superbly by their captain Farah. Unfortunately Farah suffered a dislocated elbow and will be sidelined for several weeks. Luke Brooks again displayed his potential as the Tigers built on an almost faultless first half. It is unfortunate for the Tigers to have lost Farah but they are far from a one-man band.

These sides have breathed life into the premiership competition and this week the Eels should add another two points to their tally.

PANTHERS v TITANS THE Panthers host the competition leaders to close out round seven and will be hoping for some Easter good fortune and a dry playing field.

The Panthers usual free flowing football was stymied by the dreadful conditions on Friday night as they came up against some outstanding defence from the Bunnies.

Penrith spent most of the first half camped in their opponent’s half but could not convert field position and possession into points. Mistakes in the woeful conditions cost the Panthers and it was not the track to play catch-up football on. The Panthers’ performance was probably better than the score indicated in the end.

What can you say about the Titans other than you can do no more than win. How they are achieving some of those win still has some people including their opponents scratching their heads.

When David Mead, Dave Taylor and Albert Kelly are on song they will always be hard to toss.

Against the run of form, I think the Panthers might derail the coal train and the Titans this weekend and post another win.

Local Sport THREE-WAY TIE FORCES COUNTBACK THREE players returned nett 69 in the Stroke event in Stanthorpe last weekend sponsored by Richard Reardon. The results forced a countback and a very close win for Len Leigh who just edged out runner-up Keith Barnett also took the pin shot at 3/12.

Dylan Barraclough was forced to settle for a rundown ball but as a consolation picked up the balls for best gross of 74 as well as pro-pins at 1/10 and 9/18. Matt Waterworth won the remaining pro-pin at 5/14 while Brendan Barker and Tom Page both returned nett 70 to feature in the rundown.

Hannah Reeves’ winning run continues. She had a win in the ladies’ event when she returning nett 67 for the round and claimed the ladies’ pin at 3/12. Lyn Ludlow was runner-up and had best approach at 17. Linda Kelly claimed the rundown prize for the ladies.

This Saturday a single stroke competition will be played for the Laurie Newley Memorial Trophy. Laurie was a long-time golf member at Stanthorpe and also a greenkeeper on the course.

YOUNGSTERS PLAY A LEADING ROLE SEEMS that the younger generation are leading the way when it comes to golf in Stanthorpe.

Youngster Hannah Reeves just can’t seem to get enough of golf lately.

Fresh from a convincing win in the Stanthorpe Ladies Open, the 12-year-old took on the older brigade in last Thursday’s RSL Midweek competition. Her score of 38 was too hot for the field winning and she added another win to her tally.

She outplayed her grandfather Keith Allen and another junior Dylan Barraclough (who both finished on 37) to win by a point.

The win gives Hannah another first as she goes into the record books as the first junior and the first female to win the RSL golf competition.

Although the youngsters were somewhat dominant there was some reward for the regulars John Powell who is coming back into form with a good shot to the third and Lance Eagle claimed the 12th and 17th.

It is great to see the interest from the juniors and Hannah and Dylan were joined by Declan Beare who is a regular player during the school holidays although some of the regulars may be pleased to see the trio safely back in class.

STANTHORPE HOSTS FOOTY ROYALTY FOR those exponents and followers of the round ball game in the Southern Downs district the Easter weekend is offering up a mouth-watering experience as Football Stanthorpe hosts Australian and world football royalty.

Coach of the Australian 1974 World Cup Football team, Rale Rasic will be the special guest at the International Club on Saturday. He will be accompanied by three Brazilian coaches from the world famous Botafogo Academy; Academy Director, Mauricio Penha and Head Coach, Thiago Kosloski, and Lucas Lisboa, Assistant Coach.

Director of coaching Franco Arcidiacono, said earlier this week: “This is a major coup for football in our area. How many small towns in Australia can boast having coaches of this calibre working with their players?”

“This visit also provides our local coaches with the chance to watch the sort of coaching that has won Brazil five World Cups.”

For Arcidiacono it is also an opportunity to renew his friendship with Rale Rasic and welcome Rasic back to the Stanthorpe, where in 2009 he was the Special Guest at the Under 19 Queensland Schoolboys’ Championship.

Arcidiacono added: “This man (Rasic) is an absolute legend of our game. Not only did he revolutionised football in this country but as coach of the Socceroos, masterminded Australia’s qualification for the ’74 World Cup, raising Australia’s FIFA ranking to 13 - the highest it has ever been; even under Guus Hiddink and his fabulous 2006 Socceroos who reached a rating of 16th.

For his contribution to football, Rale has been inducted into Football Australia’s Hall of Fame and has been honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia (OAM).”

Mr Arcidiacono added that Football Stanthorpe were grateful to the coaching staff at Toowoomba Grammar School, in particular, Peter Broadfoot (Director of Football) and Chris McLeod (Senior Coach) where Rasic and the Brazilians have spent the last week coaching.

Football Stanthorpe Treasurer, Steve McEvoy, added. “On behalf of our association, I’d also like to thank Ballandean Football Club President, Neil Newman for volunteering to help fund this event from a ‘Coach to Coach Mentoring’ Grant, part of the Queensland Government’s “Get Going” Initiative that his club recently received. It’s great to see a club willing to support an initiative for the benefit of all clubs in the association.”

BIG FIELD RUMBLES SOME 30 players hit the course for Friday’s Red Rooster Rumble in Warwick, one of the bigger days the event has seen for some time. Competition was fierce and the winner after a count back was Mal Crawford ahead of Declan Murphy.

Both scored 24 points.

Rundown balls went to Ross Winton and Mick Banks (23), Doug Wilson, John Devitt and Gordon McKeen (22). Pins were collected by Shaun O’Leary on seven and Declan Murphy on nine.

EVERY POST A WINNER BUDDY Hicks made every post or hole a winner in last Saturday’s Horse and Jockey Hotel Motel single stableford scoring an impressive 45 points. Runner-up Simon MacDonald was not too far afield with a score of 43. Luke Munro 39, Sam McLennan, Aaron Carrie, Jamie Harris and Trevor King (38) all collected a ball as did Gunter Nicklich and Evan Pfeffer (37) in the rundown.

Pins at five seven and nine were skinners. Simon Macdonald had success at 11; 13 belonged to Joe Finn and 16 went the way of Brandon Jones.

GOOD CONDITIONS SUIT WILLIAMS GOLF at the ‘Garra last Saturday was played in fine conditions and resulted in a close battle for the top spot. Conditions obviously suited the eventual winner K. Williams who shot a score of 68 nett ahead of runner-up Mark Clark, nett 69.

Runner-up: Mark Clarke (69) nett. Clarke also picked up the pin shot at nine and Steven Hampstead had success at 3/15. The 201-metre 11th was pitch mark free again this week and remains the smoothest green on the course.

Easter Saturday the club will host a two ball ambrose event sponsored by Angus Miller and Kevin Shultz. Don’t miss a great opportunity to disappoint a partner.

With only a five per cent chance of rain and a max of 22 degrees (has anyone mentioned Easter to the weather gods) it should be a perfect day.

Visitors are always welcome at the club.

BALLANDEAN MAKE IT THREE FROM THREE BALLANDEAN Soccer club made it three from three with wins in all three grades last weekend in their clash against Inter Club.

For the first time this season Ballandean Colts fielded 11 players and they were on the scoreboard just five minutes into their game against Inter.

Inter fought back to level the scores shortly after. Ballandean looked to be taking time to adjust to having more players on the park but found the net a further three times before half-time.

The second half was a dour struggle with Ballandean adding a further goal. Ben Rametta played well nabbing a hayrick while the team welcomed back Brad Knight and Dillon Carmody. The final score was 5-1 in Ballandean’s favour.

The Ballandean Ladies also tasted success. In an open game Ballandean played a good passing game with many attacking raids built up from the back-line. Sarah Day linked well with Richelle Reardon who filled in upfront for injured Kirsty Beckett. One of these incursions Reardon deflected the ball past the keeper to give Ballandean a one-nil lead at half-time.

Inter looked more determined in the second half but a good strike enabled Ballandean double their lead. Inter Club clawed one back on the back of a penalty from a hand ball which Rachael Neal converted. Inter had the opportunity to score an equaliser from another penalty however the shot went over the crossbar.

Emma Beecham restored some order to the Ballandean side with a fine run into the box and finish from an acute angle. Ballandean’s lead was narrowed again after a determined run from Kayla Mattiazzi left the score 3-2 in Ballandean’s favour.

Ballandean got the win and the points but were almost made to pay for missed opportunities and errors. After win in the Colts and ladies the pressure was on the men’s side to make it three out of three and they did not disappoint.

Ballandean scored two goals in the opening 10 minutes thanks to good work from Luke Reardon and Jeremy Willoughby. That should have set the game up for the home team however stout defence from Inter and poor choices from Ballandean kept the scoreline down.

Luke Reardon managed another goal before half-time after good lead-up work from George Jones backing up from the Colts game. Jones had a fine first half managing several damaging runs down the right wing.

Ballandean found it difficult to put it all together in the second half and squandered the chances they created. They either tried to move the ball too quick or held onto it too long and while they got a 3-0 win they will need to find their rhythm when they play Tenterfield after the Easter break.

REDDIES WARY OF USQ DESPITE their good start to the season the Red-

backs will be taking nothing for granted when they meet USQ on Anzac Day. USQ also look the good this season and it will be a big test for the Redbacks despite notching 172-point win over Lockyer last weekend.

There is plenty of competition for first grade spots and all players are on notice that they need to perform to hold their position or force their way into the A Grade side.

The senior players and coaching staff are not getting carried away with the club’s early season success and believe there is still much improvement in the senior side. Probably not the news some opponents want to hear.

ACTION AND NOISE APLENTY THERE was plenty of noise and action coming from the Inglewood range last weekend as plenty of shooters took the opportunity to test their skills. Visitors James, Pat and Mat from Brisbane made much noise, not so sure about accuracy.

James tried out clays coated with a mix of builders’ chalk and alcohol, which certainly gave a spectacular burst when hit.

The pistol bays were well used and the benchrest rifle area also well attended. The muzzle loaders got in plenty of preparation for this week’s shoot.

Sunday the Inglewood club will be hosting benchrest rifle competitions, pistol 25 and 50-metre events and Seneca Run muzzle loading.

A new stockade/fortified trading post, was constructed on the weekend with the assistance of Wayne Duffy, Ross Jackson, Barry Stanbury, Wayne Wright and Tom Donald after a material gathering expedition the previous week. This new structure will be used as the marshalling area for the Seneca run competitors on Sunday.

According to the weather forecast there will be no problem keeping the powder dry this Easter.

WATTLES UNDEFEATED AFTER FOUR WATTLES remain undefeated after four round of the TRL and sit at the top of the competition ladder.

They were impressive winners last weekend with a 40-20 win over Brothers in the Dan Ryan Memorial Shield. The home side was dominant in the opening stages but looked to take their foot off the gas in the second half and let Brothers back into the game after setting up a 30-6 half-time lead.

The Under 18s also had a comprehensive 3828 win over Brothers.

SPORTERS COME OUT TO PLAY THERE was a great roll-up at Sporters in Stanthorpe last Sunday, must have been the ideal conditions or the cooler morning drove everyone out of bed.

David McPaul claimed the win on Sunday ahead of runner-up Alex Cameron. Greg Barraclough had the best gross. Rundowns went to Hannah Reeves and John Walsh. Dick Hilton claimed the pin shot on the third and pro pin went the way of Rod Pettiford.

Paul Byrnes won a meat tray and Hannah Reeves who seems to be in everything also went home with a meat tray.

There will be no sporters this Sunday due to the Easter break however the following Sunday (Anzac Day long weekend) tee-off will be at the regular time of 8am-8.30am.

Make sure you have the Maureen Bates Memorial Day 4 May marked in your diary. The nine-hole two ball ambrose kicks off at 9am. It is one of the bigger days on the Stanthorpe Club calendar and is always well supported. There will a bar and barbecue operating and raffles on the day.

MIXED BAG FOR COWBOYS IT was a mixed bag of results for the Warwick Cowboys in round four of the TRL comp. The A Grade side found the competition a bit too slick in their game against Souths, going down 14-6.

Despite the scoreline the Cowboys were not without their chances and lack of ball control and errors were their killer.

It is now two wins and two losses for the A Grade side who will be hoping to turn their fortunes around when they host the 2013 Premiers Gatton at Fr Ranger Oval after the Easter break.

The home side will welcome back some of the players sidelined by injury and their coach is adamant the side can turn their fortunes around.

In the Reserve Grade the Cowboys had a 30-6 win over their counterparts from Souths while the Under 18s got home 24-22 in another nail-biting two-point win. The Under 18s are playing a great brand of football and have the determination to find a win in tough circumstances.

Wattles next assignment after the Easter break is against Valleys at the Herb Steinohrt Oval.
