JIM FAGAN It’s official. There are only six koalas left in Noosa Shire. At least, that was the number in May last year when rangers from the State Government’s Koala Conservation Unit, spent a week in Noosa collecting data on the current koala population.

Pomona School wins Community Garden of the Year The Sensory Garden at Pomona State School has been officially recognised as the “Gardening Australia 2013 Community Garden of the Year”.

The Sensory Garden, officially opened in August last year by MP David Gibson, featured in Gardening Australia’s January edition.

This unique garden was developed with the aim of making a creative and stimulating space for

students to not only learn about the environment but also to reflect on the social and emotional lessons provided in class.

For example, the uneven climbing logs give the idea that life has ups and downs.

To stimulate the senses there are fragrant, edible, tropical and touch and texture sections within the garden, while areas representing water, land and air encourage creativity and imagination.

It has taken 11 months of prodding

by Noosa Today to get interim results of the survey but on Monday a spokesperson for the Government’s Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, reported: “Thirteen bushland and urban sites from Cooloola National Park to Peregian Beach were surveyed, totalling approximately 800 hectares. Six koalas were sighted.”

She said the survey work for Noosa will be completed by the end of this month but results for the whole of the Sunshine Coast won’t be available until December.

The result has shocked koala conservation group, Queensland Koala Crusaders.

“Our region has historically been a stronghold for the species, but no more,” said the group’s Carolyn Beaton. “A high point for the Noosa National Park koala population alone was near to 100 in the late 1990s.

“I would like to know the breakdown of the 13 areas. I had expected that DEHP would have found evidence of koalas at Noosa National Park – at both the headland section and at the southern end (at North Peregian).

She said the Noosa community had engaged in logging lo-

cal koala sightings “with some gusto” since the Koala Diaries website was launched in early 2010.

“Other similar sites have continued to track koalas since Koala Diaries ceased its mapping project in 2012. We have therefore built up a good picture of koala activity over a significant timeframe.

“This survey work by the Queensland Government will be recognised as baseline data, however, in the absence of any other scientific field assessment.”

Carolyn said this was the first time that independently verifiable, scientifically based information for the region had

been presented.

“The timeframe for the completion of this survey project keeps getting extended and the inordinate amount of time it is taking reflects poorly on the decision of the department to dissolve its Koala Conservation Unit late last year.

“If the project was being conducted in private enterprise it would be done within six months.

When we’re told the final survey results “should” be ready in six months, that gives me no confidence at all.

“Queensland Koala Crusaders remains committed to the ideal of our region having a sustainable koala population,” she said.

Local businesses facing wage hike JOLENE OGLE Local businesses are calling for reforms in a bid to break even this Easter as they face five public holidays in a week.

Shades Cafe and Wine Bar co-owner Gareth Doran said most employers can expect to pay more than double their normal wage bill, with hourly rates starting from $42 over the coming days.

“In an industry where profit margins are always tight, this tips it over

the scales,” he said.

“It’s a busy period in Noosa and it’s unfortunate to see many businesses view it to be more advantageous to close rather than pay the penalty rates.

“This does not help our image as a tourist destination.”

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry QLD (CCIQ) predict the high wages will force many businesses to close rather than wear the cost, with tourist towns wearing the brunt.

CCIQ general manager of advocacy Nick Behrens said Noosa is a

prime example where two-thirds of businesses in Hastings Street and Gympie Terrace chose to close over the Easter weekend last year.

Maisie’s Seafood and Steakhouse head chef Kelly Largaider said the cost of public holidays causes a vicious cycle that will impact the local tourism industry.

“If businesses start to close, then tourists won’t come and if tourists don’t come, more businesses will close,” she said.

Ms Largaider said it was time for

reforms to modernise penalty rate laws.

“The workplace has changed since penalty rates were brought in in 1919,” Mr Largaider said.

“Businesses now open on Sundays and public holidays. The Government needs to update the laws or give businesses a tax break when they stay open on public holidays.”

Mr Behrens agrees saying “we must change with the times” and “accept we are now a 24/7 society”.

“Time and again we have suggested the first five shifts of an employ-

ee’s week be penalty rate-free before the additional rates kick in from six shifts onwards,” he said.

Mr Behrens said this system would give employers greater flexibility to manage their rosters while also ensuring workers are rewarded for working a longer week.

Mr Behrens said the contemporary idea of the working week is far different to that of the time when penalty rates were introduced and with a perfect storm looming over Easter, the discussion must be had.

A strong U15 Board Rescue team from Sunshine Beach Surf Club, they knew they worked well together and had won other competitions, but this was the big one – the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.

But they went for it and, knocking out two tough NSW teams, they brought the gold medal home for Queensland.

Tom’s mum Melissa told Noosa Today that the experience of watching them win was incredible.

“It was unbelievable! We were so thrilled for them. We knew they were good but the competition was really tough and we couldn’t imagine they would win the gold,” she said.

“They were pumped and really determined and they work really well together.”

Sunshine Beach Surf Club manager Tim Johnson described the win as an “awesome achievement” for the club.

The boys’ win made it a double for the club, with the U17 Patrol Competition team of Jarrad Greentree, Suzannah Henshaw, Brock Redwood and Edward Tilleard also winning gold at the Aussies.

Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said last weekend’s blitz on the beach saw 664 random breath tests conducted and 13 tickets issued for speeding.

He said it was important for drivers to stay under the speed limit, especially while driving on the beach.

A range of media representatives have been hosted by Tourism Noosa, including bloggers from both France and Malaysia, as well as a German Food and Wine Magazine and film crew from one of Germany’s high profile TV shows.

A life changing gift: those were the words mum Karina of Tewantin used when she was presented with a hydraulic wheelchair lift for her daughter, Sunny,

Born with an exceptionally rare form of chromosome translocation, seven year old Sunny has faced many medical difficulties to date. Her future is yet another unknown for the family to deal with.

Recently another issue arose when Sunny became too heavy for Karina to lift in and out of the family car. This usually left Karina with the option of getting someone in to care for Sunny while she was out or simply not go out.

She now attends Nambour Special School and, in Karina’s words, “she brings us so much joy”.

Cliff and his team have taken the bags on board and will make them available to campers and visitors to encourage the collection of any rubbish found in the much-loved camping grounds and beaches.

Noosa’s Clean Up Australia Day co-ordinator, Joe Jurisevic, said the handing out of bags by volunteers at the ferry crossing during previous holiday periods had been successful, encouraging visitors to “do the right thing” and keep their favourite camping spots litter-free.

“The results have been encouraging with reports of an improvement in waste levels,” he said.

Council crackdown on freeloading campers

And if you have a mobile phone and access to social media like Facebook and Twitter you’ll get the latest word on where to enjoy free camping in Noosa plus new to the market apps that tell you everything you need to know – even when the sites become vacant!

The huge rise in camping freeloaders has caused Noosa Council’s chief public safety law officer, Phil Amson, to write to 18 rental vehicle companies like Britz and Wicked Campers to pass the word to their customers that there is no free camping in Noosa. It might be okay in other areas but there’s nothing here.

“We’re tearing our hair out,” he told Noosa Today. “We have three officers and they are working seven days a week. In one morning this month we had complaints of up to 78 campers from Tewantin to Noosa Heads so you can imagine how long it took an officer to go round them all.

“Under our local law you can’t camp, pitch a tent, stay overnight in a car, a caravan or a campervan

or any vehicle designed for that purpose on public land. Everyone wants to come here and they want to set up camp in high profile areas like the river mouth, outside the National Park at Noosa Heads, Sunshine Beach or Tewantin’s Memorial Park.

“They want water views so they can wake up and say ‘How lovely. It’s fantastic.’ Trouble is we’ve got people paying a lot of money to live in those areas and, when they open their front doors and see beach towels hanging out of the cars and rubbish everywhere, it becomes a problem and we get complaints.”

Mr Amson said officers tried to deal with every complaint. “We give them warnings and hand out flyers telling them here’s the caravan parks we want you to go to. On

the spot fines are available but we try to educate them first. When we get repeat offenders they get a fine of $550. It’s a big sum.”

New signage is now being put up in high profile areas, saying free camping is not allowed but, according to Mr Amson, word is being spread through social media and phone apps that if you camp in these places you will get a fine.

“We’ve been issuing fines but in the last couple of days we’ve found people are moving into the outer suburbs, which means we have to increase our patrol area.

“I have asked our IT people to find out who the administrators of these apps are and to get them to stop. They are giving misleading information to members of the public who really are quite innocent. We want campers to come here and enjoy the Noosa experience and do their Fraser Island trips from here but we don’t want them coming here and breaking the law because of false and misleading information.”

Local hits back at netting claim JOLENE OGLE A fourth generation Noosa fisherman has slammed claims that local lakes are being “pillaged” by commercial netters.

Trevor Clarey, now retired, said it was “derogatory” to the local industry to imply net fishers are responsible for there being no seabirds in Lake Cooroibah due to daily netting.

Mr Clarey’s comments come in reply to Lake Cooroibah resident Brian William’s claims excessive netting in local lakes is devastating the environment.

Mr Clarey said all commercial

netters would be well aware the Noosa Shire is a “flora and fauna sanctuary” and anyone breaking the netting and fishing laws are sure to be dealt with by local authorities.

In response to claims the fish caught in local lakes are being sold for pet food and bait, Mr Clarey said it was “quite frankly none of our business” who bought the catch and he hoped the forthcoming fisheries review wouldn’t result in anyone being denied “their opportunity to have a meal of world renowned succulent, sub-tropical Noosa River seafood”.

Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said he could see both sides of the fishing argument and was looking forward to the review, which would see solutions for better management “to determine a new approach for our fisheries that will focus on fishing throughout the entire state, not individual rules or marine park boundaries”.

Mr Elmes said a call for committee members to join the fisheries review was a great chance for locals to have their say on the issue.

World premier in Noosa this month JIM FAGAN It’s a long way from singing the title role in Donizetti’s Lucia de Lammermoor at the Hanover State Opera to singing Wagner at The J on Saturday, April 26, but leading German soprano, Julia Borchert, is looking forward to the moment.

Julia arrives in Noosa tomorrow to start rehearsing for her role as Isolde in the world premiere of TRISTAN XS, an innovative and abbreviated version of Richard Wagner’s masterpiece of love and death, Tristan und Isolde, and presented by Noosa not for profit hausmusicinc.

The opera’s original length of over five hours involves an enormous orchestra, seven soloists and choir with complex staging but German heldentenor Hans-Georg Wimmer, whose second home is Noosa, and Brisbane-based musicologist Armin Terzer, have created and arranged this opera event for soprano, tenor and two grand pianos.

According to Hans-Georg, “This ‘extra small’ version allows the audience to experience a seldom-performed Wagnerian opera ‘live’ in an intimate setting.”

Lammermoor, she said,” “Well, it’s a nice little story. The chief conductor from Hanover State Opera asked me to sing the great aria from Lucia called “The Mad Scene” for a youth concert.

Today, the world’s most famous singer for Lucia is Maria Callas so, after my first shock,I started to laugh and answered that he probably had made a mistake with my phone number.

“But then he told me he wished me to sing and that he believed in me.I felt very confident then, very relaxed and I sang the whole marvellous aria.After the concert, I was offered the complete new production of Lucia Di Lammermoor.”

Accompanying Julia and HansGeorg are pianists Alex Raineri and John Woods, who is a lecturer at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane. A video, inspired by the works of German artist Thomas Sydow, will evoke images to create an atmosphere for Wagner’s music.

Peter Bassett, author of various books on Richard Wagner and opera, and Dr Belinda McKay from Griffith University will guide the audience through the concert.

NBN looks at towering problem JIM FAGAN NBN Co planners are looking for another preferred site at Cooran for their 35 metre tower which is a key part of their wireless broadband network.

NBN’s preferred site is at 321 Coles Creek Road but Noosa Council has not yet approved the application - now in the extended decision stage - while it waits for responses to questions on the tower’s height and alternative locations.

According to a network spokesman, the present site “is being kept in the mix until a new site has been found and approved by the landowner but, yes, we are looking for another site.

“We don’t know as yet when we are going to be able to respond to council but we know we are trying to get it done as quickly as possible.

What’s taking the time we have to find alternative locations and then talk to the different landowners in-

volved. It’s hard to put a fixed timeline on it but we know it is a high priority.”

During the public notification period, council received about 100 submissions for the application, including a petition of objection of some 300 signatures from residents.

A spokesman for the petitioners said the group was happy and excited about the NBN attempt to find somewhere else for the tower. “We hope they find another viable location because in our opinion the proposed location they have isn’t satisfactory because it is near semi-rural homes and properties”.

The proposed tower will provide fixed wireless transmission as part of the NBN network. Fixed wireless is a network of base station facilities which provide a broadband service via radio transmissions. The base stations will communicate directly with antennas fixed to individual premises (eg dwellings or businesses) to deliver wireless broadband access.

The wheelchair is used to get the sailors down to the water’s edge because most new mobility chairs can’t be used in sand and saltwater.

But when NYRC Sailing Manager, Paul Blundell, dropped into see Mark Tirrell at Noosa Marine Repairs, the problem was solved.

Mark offered to rebuild the wheelchair as a donation for the program.

“There are always plenty of good deed stories around Noosa and Noosa Marine Re-

pairs has now added to the list,” Paul said.

“I picked up the new chair last week and it’s safer and stronger than the original now that Mark has made the frame from aluminium tubing and not PVC like the original.

Marks’s young son is currently sailing in the junior Tackers program and Mark just wanted to give something back to the club. When the old wheelchair fell apart he jumped at the idea of redesigning the chair and building it to last.”

Buoyed Up program hits new highs Noosa MP Glen Elmes has accepted the position of NYRC Buoyed Up Patron and is encouraging locals to get behind this innovative program.

“As Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs and Patron of the Noosa Buoyed Up program I fully support and appreciate the commitment adopted by the NYRC to offer and deliver such a worthwhile program to Indigenous and Vulnerable children in the seven to 12 years age group,” Mr Elmes said.

“The program is designed to provide this vulnerable community of young people with a fun, confidence-building sailing experience and build self-esteem, develop

motor skills and value team work whilst also learning about the environment and enjoying cultural sessions derived by their elders and community leaders.

“The programs delivered by Youthsail are second-to-none and this new innovative program further cements the overall community spirit and commitment of the NYRC to provide for segments of the community that would normally be overlooked.”

The evaluation of the Buoyed Up initiative by the University of Canberra’s National Institute of Sports Studies found that new positive experiences may be the key to re-engaging children at school and reducing the risk of social exclusion for disadvantaged children.

“I believe that the Buoyed Up program answers a number of issues that normally these vulnerable and culturally diverse groups endure. I urge you to consider offering your financial support to this wonderful initiative and help the NYRC to continue the Buoyed Up ideal,” Mr Elmes said.

Buoyed Up has now been approved by the Australian Sports Foundation as an ‘approved project’ under their Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) Tax rules so all donations to NYRC Buoyed Up over $2 are tax deductible.

Veggie Village is growing Peregian Beach’s much loved community garden, Veggie Village, is set for a big year of growth, and not just for its organic fruit and vegetables.

After seven successful years, Veggie Village is expanding into the neighbouring Di Hirst oval to make room for more members, more garden plots and more activities for the Peregian community.

Local architect and Veggie Village member Robyn Hewitt said the expansion is gradually getting underway with plans taking shape some two years after Council approval was granted.

“This is the second phase for our beautiful food gardens,” she said. “It’s a growth spurt that will allow us to use a small section on the edge of the oval to do more for our members and our community.”

Ms Hewitt said Veggie Village hangs out its welcome sign for the whole community and is used for meetings and workshops as well as members learning about organic growing.

While the plans are not yet final, they’re likely to include a child-friendly play area to cater for the young families that have recently joined the village.

It will be crossed by wheelchair-friendly paths for easy access, winding through a food forest of fruit trees and garden plots.

A seed propagation shed will be erected there so the village can grow its own seedlings.

Veggie Village is also keen to connect with its neighbours who use Di Hirst oval. It’s planning to include a seating area for watching junior cricket, and also a shaded viewing platform that looks out on the oval and out towards Mt Cooroy.

Visitors to the oval this month will see the extension roughly pegged out, but it’s likely to take most of this winter for the vision of a bigger and better community garden to gradually take shape.

180 say farewell to Hastings Street’s Fay Roff JIM FAGAN You could buy a shop lease in Hastings Street for $30,000 when Fay and Barry Roff opened their fine jewellery store in 1982 and for the next 26 years visitors and locals repeatedly came back to shop there, attracted by Fay’s warm friendliness and diamond cutter Barry’s expert knowledge.

Fay died at Katie Rose Cottage on April 5 and last Friday at Tewantin more than 180 family members and friends packed Drysdale’s funeral parlour to say farewell.

Fay was born in Bondi on April 17, 1940 and grew up in Sydney. She went to business college and, when she graduated, started work with Sydney City Council as a book keeper, a career experience which worked for them as she and Barry built up their Noosa business.

Fay met Barry when she was 18. They married in May 1965 and lived in Bondi, then in Maroubra, with their three boys, Wayne, Stuart and Darren. Noosa was a favourite place for holidays and in 1981 they decided to make it their permanent home.

Before they opened their jewellery shop, Barry recalls how people tried to convince him to open in Noosa Junction. “When we came here on holidays, I always felt Hastings Street had a great potential. It felt just a little bit above Sydney’s Double Bay. I thought it was sensational.

“The Sheraton wasn’t built then but the

shop was opposite where it is now. We both worked seven days a week before we earned enough to put on staff to help us.

“Fay was always careful with the jewellery but one night, when she was putting away the trays, she noticed a big ruby and diamond ring was missing. She thought back and remembered this old lady wanting something from a display case. She wasn’t sure but she felt it possible the old lady had followed her hand in and took the ring.

“The woman was about 70 and the police had photos of her. It turned out she had robbed jewellery shops all over Australia and

had been caught stealing a fur coat from David Jones. “Every time she got out of jail, she would get into stealing again.”

In 2008 they sold the business and enjoyed travelling overseas. Fay’s two sisters, Julie Terry and Kerry Collier, had moved to Noosa earlier with their husbands and, with son Wayne living at Sunrise Beach with Joanne and grandchildren, John and Dean, Fay enjoyed many happy family times in her final years.

Fay is survived by her husband, Barry, sisters Julie and Kerrie, her three sons, Wayne, Stuart and Darren and grandchildren, John and Dean.

Art classes for kids Noosa Regional Gallery is running children’s after school art classes for eight weeks, starting on May 1.

The eightweek program will explore contemporary approaches in the world of Hyperclay and storytelling through art and photography

Based on the current exhibitions displayed in the gallery, the program is designed to inspire the hearts and minds of young artists.

Organisers say small classes will ensure that each child will be given guidance catered to their needs and interests. Art activities will aim to stretch imagination and build confidence in a safe and supported environment.

The program has been created to further enrich primary school visual art lessons, developed in line with the current ACARA national curriculum.

The eight-week program will explore contemporary approaches in the world of Hyperclay and storytelling through art and photography. The children will produce two fully resolved artworks. The first project will be a fired and painted clay piece; the second will involve creating a story, and designing and making props for an individualised photography scene.

At the conclusion of the program, children will have the opportunity to display their artworks in a mini exhibition and will be presented with a certificate.

SHOCKED Referring to Christian Leiberg’s letters to the Noosa local papers, I am shocked to hear, that managing a Biosphere Status costs so much money. It is a Status after all and should not mean big business. I travelled through a lot of Biosphere Reserves in Germany, small towns and villages, and no-one complained about horrendous costs.

I am concerned these one-metre rules to be adhered to when passing a cyclist will see a lot of disputed court cases, especially if it’s not always left in the hands of the law to decide who’s at fault at the time. And it’s not always the driver of the vehicle!

Driving down David Low Way by the school [I saw] more green lines being painted for cyclists’ safety. I find it’s not so much the usual “lycra clad racers” you have the one-metre problem with, it’s the mountain bikers with elbows and knees out and it’s just like trying to pass a Boeing 747. All the law needed was a stricter rule on “pass with safety.”

SCARE STORIES In response to your correspondent (RC, NT April 3): Having been an environmental manager for a multinational company, I am extremely familiar with pollution and pollutants. Looking at the bright side, in my lifetime, air, soil and water pollution has decreased dramatically; cars now burn unleaded petrol and have catalytic converters, power stations have highly efficient scrubbing systems, backyard incinerators have been banned and all enterprises are restricted in their output of pollutants to the air, water and the ground by strict environmental regulations.

From the rubbish that gets washed up on our beaches and for instance, the debris floating in the Indian Ocean, it is obvious that there are still a lot of polluting behaviours that need to be stopped.

Much is made of carbon dioxide being an air pollutant - it is NOT! Carbon dioxide is no more a pollutant of the air than salt is of the oceans. In fact carbon dioxide is critically essential for all plant life on earth. As atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have been rising, the earth is greening (ref.

CSIRO).

In spite of all the alarming scare stories, there is not a skerrick of proof that carbon dioxide affects global temperatures and plenty of proof against this hypothesis. The climate

is always changing; the earth has had ice ages when carbon dioxide levels were over 1,000 ppm and warmer periods than the present when levels were lower than today’s. So, let us concentrate on coping with an ever-changing climate.

IPCC AND SCIENCE Anyone familiar with the personnel and events leading to the formation of the IPCC would know it was established to prove CO2 produced by the combustion of fossil fuels by humans places the future of the planet at risk. This is not how science works. It is not possible to prove a hypothesis but only one experiment with contrary data is all that is needed to disprove it. Recent data shows a decrease in global temperatures in the interval 1940 to 1970 although CO2 levels increased. If the IPCC were a true scientific body it would have accepted this evidence and abandoned its CO2 conjecture.

The first requirement for a scientific group researching a hypothesis is a survey of the relevant literature.

This would have revealed Prof RW Wood’s experiment (1909) that disproved the greenhouse theory of the atmosphere. Einstein’s work (1917) on the Quantum Theory of radiation shows that molecules that absorb ra-

diation at certain frequencies will also emit radiation. Contrary to claims made by the IPCC it is not possible for CO2 gas to “trap”heat. Al Gore should have been made aware of these basic facts before he made his propaganda film that showed radiation unable to escape to outer space because it was trapped by CO2 causing, according to him, dangerous global warming.

The IPCC refuses to consider that the Earth’s climate is controlled by the Sun. There is a plethora of data linking solar and planetary cycles to the changes in the Earth’s climate throughout geologic history. There is no data linking CO2 with climate change.

The IPCC is a cabal of activists who promote climate alarmism based on political not scientific outputs of its invalid climate models.

RISK TAKING John Casey may be correct, although he is in the minority of scientists regarding climate change. I don’t really know how big an effect our emissions have on climate change, I would just ask you to consider what if John Casey is actually wrong, is this a risk you are willing to take? I have no desire to change your mind, as the old

saying goes a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.

I would just rather err on the side of caution, it would seem foolish not to.

As to whether Australia reduces its carbon emissions whilst other countries don’t, I think it’s wise to clean up our own backyard first and set an example for others is pretty good advice. The extra costs we will incur trying to reduce global warming might mean you will have to buy a smaller boat, take one less holiday a year or miss out on a marshmallow with your latte, but at the end of the day (excuse the pun), you’ll survive.

One only has to leave Australia and travel to other countries to realise the value of any type of United Nations recognition. Noosa is very privileged to have been granted Man in the Biosphere Reserve Status. It makes Noosa a unique place. I am sure under the management of our new Noosa council the value of this listing will become more and more recognised. As we look after our environment, and use our listing as the foundation of building a very sustainable community, it will attract more international tourists who bring with them more jobs, making Noosa an even more desirable place to live. Everyone in Noosa should realise that the natural beauty of the whole Noosa Shire would have made it suitable to being a National Park. Settlement developed and we are now lucky enough to live in this wonderful area.

It should not be overlooked that Noosa has one of only a handful of UNESCO Man in the Biosphere Reserve listings in Australia. This makes the area we live in a very special and unique place, especially as the Man in the Biosphere Reserve Listing covers the whole of the shire not just one section. Please treasure our Man in the Biosphere Reserve status instead of knocking it. Be proud of our legacy, look after it and realise its value instead of questioning it.

SPURIOUS CLAIMS As a real professional research scientist I am fed up with reading letters by people who claim some spurious scientific knowledge to support their climate-change denialist position. I looked up Case Smit on Google and then on Google scholar where real published research is

found and found no trace of him. If he ever did a university degree in science he’s forgotten most of what he learnt and apparently never really understood it anyway. Woody Dass appears to be just the usual scientific illiterate with beliefs. Neither gentleman seems capable of accessing or understanding the real data and explanations of climate change which are readily available on the Internet.

Of course you can find every form of rubbish the human race has ever developed on the Internet as well as every form of knowledge. The trick is to be able to tell which is which.

These gentlemen fail dismally. As to John Casey, his Space and Science Research Corporation, has only one employee, namely himself. He has no background in any aspect of climate science or any other science let alone research and wants you to donate to him. I will try and straighten out Woody Dass on the IPCC at another time when I get up another head of steam.

Growing environmental degradation caused by massive population increase and by the lifting of “red and green tape” legislation by neoliberal LNP governments, state and federal, is an unchecked, open door for big corporate business to have its way with the environment.

Economic so-called “rationalist” policy puts profit first, people second and the biodiversity of a natural environment last, as in the example of the federal government allowing dredge dumping near the reef in support of the destructive coal mining and burning industry, adding hugely to the carbonisation and acidification of the oceans and atmosphere. Yes, under the dictates of this economic system, especially in the light of the serious coming consequences of global warming, the future is indeed unsustainable on this unchecked curve. Germany is so much more enlightened in terms of environmental and climate change awareness and this will be a refreshing change. Very sadly, despite all of our efforts, Australia is undergoing a transit through the dark ages of ignorance brought about mainly by a monopolised mainstream media and an occupied political system serving the needs and dictates of big capital.

Wish you all the best for your move back home and rewards for your inevitable involvement there as well. With the record extinction rates in this country, it is so much of the beautiful and unique fauna and flora that we sadly must say goodbye to as humans continue to overrun the planet in such unsustainable numbers under the rule of such a greedy and unbalanced economic system.

The American “Indians” had a great insight to the white man’s culture of greed as they sustained the destructive onslaught, as do the First Peoples here who know that the Earth’s biosphere is their Mother with whom they have a caring, custodial and reciprocal relationship: not only will we be left bereft of other life forms, our “spirit brothers and

sisters”, but also as Chief Seattle reminded them, money is not edible.

We are rapidly destroying our life support system in seeming insanity in a macro example of the syndrome of Rapanui/Easter Island, where competition for the biggest, the most, destroyed forests, the building material to make boats for fishing, leading to mass starvation and extinctions.

BUILDING REGULATIONS It started when we had the old Noosa Council but got completely out of hand when we were part of SCRC. Building regulations re: houses on residential A land, do they still exist? It’s a “free for all” now with new homes or renovations obviously obtaining relaxation of the regulations.

You now see houses been built right up to side boundaries, garages right on front boundaries and side boundaries, height limits are extended to three stories, and house sizes are taking up 75-80 per cent of the land. The Noosa Building Regulations state that buildings be at least six metres from the front boundary and two metres from side and back boundaries, maximum two stories high and maximum 50 per cent of land area.

Are we going to live like inner cities or the Gold Coast, with wall to wall buildings and all houses and garages built on the front (street) boundary? The new Noosa Council is very busy getting re-established, but it’s a “must do” that the Noosa Council CEO and Councillors rectify this loophole. It appears all you have to do is get a private certifier and a town planner, then you can get whatever building relaxation you wish. The

new changes to the Noosa plan do not cover building regulations.

I would like Noosa Council CEO or a councillor to respond, as this has to stop.

PREBEN NIELSEN Sunrise Beach IT’S FUNDING On the letters page of your March 27 edition, Phillip Moran of Noosa & District Landcare takes aim at Greg Reddaway over his assertion that Landcare is ‘part government funded’. Phillip says “we wish!’ and goes on to explain that they do in fact receive money from Council. So why is he getting upset about Mr Reddaway’s statement of fact? Does Phillip Moran not believe that council is a level of government? Isn’t it called ‘local government’ after all? He also explains that between Landcare, NICA and Mary River Catchment Co-ordinating Committee a total of 28 people are employed. Crikey, and I thought these were volunteer organisations. Seems they are really just more people hanging off the public purse strings, at my expense.

Before I joined that dedicated band of potters I was more worried about my hands and nails than about what I was going to create that morning.

All I had ever seen were pictures of potter’s wheels with wet clay being spun off and flung around. So I donned a cover-all smock, gritted my teeth, and went to meet Jenny in the pottery at Noosa Arts and Crafts Wallace House.

masterpiece by hand, talked through the processes, and assisted as I went along. I learned all about the types of clay used, from Buff Raku - Stoneware and Sandy-Trachyte, White Stoneware, and so on - and all about glazes, underglazes, drought glaze, and firing.

I decided I’d like to challenge myself by making a vase, and a huge heavy slab of White Stoneware clay was placed in front of me, as Jenny explained the importance of proper cutting, measuring and rolling – the latter being undertaken by a huge heavy roller, stepped down and down a little at a time, until the desired thickness of clay was achieved.

The clay was placed between two linen cloths to prevent it sticking to other surfaces, and eventually

a suitable thickness and size was achieved. The importance, even at this early stage, lay in preventing any chance of an air pocket – albeit miniscule - entering the body of the clay. It was dense, solid, and very clammy.

We carefully transferred the sheet of clay to a work surface and measured and cut out my vase before rolling it round a form and mitring the edges, thereby constructing a seamless join in the floppy clay. Jenny talked me through using Slip. Now Slip does really what it says – it is a thin mix of clay and water that, when applied to surfaces - in my case, to join the edges - slips, smooths and slides over the clay. It was then applied to all the raw cut edges to soften and smooth and shape, until I was happy with my work.

Now the waiting began. Placed in a climate-controlled environment for one week, my precious vase was then removed, having hardened, and was ready for the finishing touches before another week of drying, and then, at last, the all-important firing process.

My vase was still looking rather plain and bare, but patience is the buzz-word when it comes to pottery as, after the first firing, the underglaze (painted decoration to me and you) was applied before yet another, final, firing process.

Travel diary plots life’s journeys LIFE OF BRINE PHIL JARRATT

I’m still delighting in my found-again travel diaries, particularly as travel beckons again, in about 12 hours time as I write, in fact. This one was a rather special trip because it signalled the end of an era in my relationship with a child, and another decade would pass before my adult stepdaughter and I would learn to love each other again.

Funny word, “step”, in so far as it defines so much about a parent/child relationship that doesn’t even need to exist, but almost always does. As in, step back, this is not your child.

There’s almost always baggage, and in our case that was considerable. I stepped into Sophie’s life when I took up with her mum. She was 11 months old and cute as a button. I never stopped to think about it, I just loved her from the start.

My wife and I soon had Sam together, and we travelled the world a lot when the kids were small, but there came a time when I began to feel the strains of being the “other dad”, and needed some time out with Sophie alone. A magazine I wrote for had suggested I should go to Tasmania and investigate the new trend for bed and breakfast establishments and farm stays, so I took Soph, 10 years old now, along for the ride.

Hobart, 10 October, 1985: I’m writing this from our room at Barton Cottage in Battery Point, Hobart. I’m crouched on a very rickety and ancient table in a corner of the Chamber Maids’ Quarters, which sounds much more exciting than what it is – an attic room with two brass beds overlooking Hampden Street. From the window I can see York Antiques and The Chocolate Shop, which attracted Sophie far more than Barton Cottage. “It’s just a house,” she said when we walked up from the bus terminal.

Strahan, 13 October, 1985: Sophie wakes me at 6.30am and tells me that I was talking about Dick Smith in my sleep. This is truly disturbing.

It is a beautiful, still, clear morning, perfect for the river cruise we have booked. We have breakfast in the hotel dining room with a handful of people who are also heading for the cruise. The publican makes the rounds of the tables and thoroughly annoys everyone, particularly Sophie, who is having a rough start to the day. Our skipper on the Gordon Explorer is a youngish bloke with a rasping voice and a pretend naval uniform. About half an hour into the four-hour cruise I whisper to Sophie: “I don’t think I’m very good at tour groups.” She nods, and makes her Cabbage Patch Doll nod too.

Queenstown, 14 October, 1985: We hitchhiked here late in the afternoon, rather than spend another night in Strahan, and checked into the Empire Hotel, which is not very flash, and Sophie was not impressed. Trying to make good, I walked her down to the best hotel in town, the Silver Hills, and took her dinner at the splendidly-named Smelters Restaurant. Our

food was burnt and vaguely metallic, so it all worked. Coming back up the hill, we couldn’t help but notice that this is a tough town. It’s Saturday night and the language from the teens and pre-teens is somewhat colourful, and the night streets are kind of mean. Back at the Empire, Sophie takes Cabbie to bed and I join the lone drinker in the bar, Andrew Welch, for a nightcap. After two whiskies he tells me he’s a failed priest and I confess I’ve left a 10-year-old alone in the room upstairs. Cheers. We have one more for the road.

Launceston, 18 October, 1985: We ride the chairlift over Cataract Gorge and talk. In Sophie’s view I am boring, disgusting and embarrassing in turn, sometimes all three together, and I make her walk everywhere and I peer into people’s yards and generally act like a goose.

While she tells me this, she is dragging her feet and rubbing herself against available fences and walls. It’s very strange.

Scottsdale, 19 October, 1985: The bus drops us off at the small town of Scottsdale, and I have enough time to put five bucks each way on Our Sophia, running in Melbourne, before Jim McQueen picks us up in his battered station wagon to take us to lunch. Jim is a novelist I

know a bit, and since I just favourably reviewed his new book Hook’s Mountain, we thought we should catch up.

We drive to his orchid farm at Nabowla – “more money in orchids than books”, he says.

We walk around the property before a grog-free lunch, even though I’ve brought wine. I don’t know that much about Jim, but I know the tortured characters of his novels, and I see AA tattooed on his forehead. As we wait for the bus in Scottsdale, Sophie says she and Cabbie want to go home.

The teen years were tough, and when Sophie was about 20 we nearly came to blows one night in Santa Cruz, California. We were both going through stuff, and created wounds that took a long time to heal. And then we both grew up, a second skin for me, a first for her. And now we’re good.

She also pioneered a tradition in the Jarratt family, where I took each of the daughters on a dad trip somewhere special. Sam got New Caledonia and the Ile des Pins, Ellie’s coming of age must have coincided with a downturn in the economy because we camped at Munna Point overnight and played beach cricket.

So it goes.

Sunday session at Shades International musician Jer Gregg will help celebrate the first Shades on Sunday (S.O.S) session this Sunday, from 3pm.

Gregg is one of Nashville’s most exciting independent artists, pioneering a new Americana mix of country, rock, soul, folk and blues.

Fresh from the Julia Creek Dirt and Dust festival, Gregg said most of the songs on his debut album Otis were penned during his last visit to Australia.

Shades Cafe & Wine Bar co-owner Gareth Doran said the new monthly event will “bring the Junction to life”.

“It will be a great atmosphere with dancing in the street combined with an international act. It will make for an amazing Easter Sunday,” he said.

“We have always support-

ed live music and now, to have a highly respected musician from Nashville is fantastic,” Gareth said.

Gareth said special liquor licence restrictions had been lifted to allow people to enjoy live music under the dappled shade at the front of the cafe and wine bar.

Ashtanga yoga varies from other forms of yoga as it follows a set sequence of postures that unfold over time to build a strong foundation.

The family owned and operated business welcomes everyone to come and watch Paolo make gelato in their antique Italian ice-cream churn, with gelati extracted by hand and paddle, through the unique purpose-built viewing window.

INGREDIENTS 90g Australian butter, chopped 1/3 cup caster sugar 1 tablespoon honey 4 cups plain popcorn 1/4 cup chopped roasted peanuts (optional) 24-27 small solid chocolate eggs or 8-9 medium eggs, to garnish

by Patrick Williams at Belmondos It’s Easter time and if you are looking for a great seafood dish try this delicious recipe from Patrick Williams at Belmondos.

Noosa River Smokehouse will be smoking fresh snapper fillets for the 2014 Easter holidays, available at Belmondos Whole Foods as well as the Noosa Farmers Market on Sundays.

Slow Food Noosa will be unleashing the positive power of raw food with its next guest speaker, Digestive Health Specialist, Author and Alchemist in Nutritional Cuisine, Scott Mathias.

Smoked Queensland Snapper, Fennel, Wild Rocket, Roasted Baby Tomatoes SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS 350g Noosa River Smokehouse snapper fillet 100g wild baby rocket 2 baby fennel bulbs shaved thinly 16 vine-ripened baby Roma tomatoes 1 x 200g punnet Golden Grape tomatoes 40g baby capers 1 medium Spanish onion thinly sliced 25ml balsamic vinegar 125g extra virgin olive oil, plus a

little extra to lightly dress fennel, onion and rocket Sea salt Cracked black pepper METHOD Cut tomatoes in halves lengthways.

In a hot dry pan, sear tomato halves for about 20 seconds, turn tomatoes over, sear for another 20 seconds, season with sea salt and cracked pepper and place in hot 200’C oven for 2-3 minutes. Remove and let cool.

Cut fennel bulbs into quarters, remove core, shave very thinly and place into large mixing bowl. Add thinly sliced onion with washed wild baby

rocket. Toss together, set aside.

Just before serving drizzle with olive oil, season with cracked black pepper and sea salt.

Thinly slice smoked snapper fillet then, on a platter, arrange half the roasted tomatoes, a quarter of salad mix plus a quarter of smoked snapper.

Repeat process, also placing remainder of roasted tomatoes on each layer.

For dressing, place balsamic vinegar into mixing bowl & whisk in olive oil slowly so as to emulsify & thicken, add pinch of salt to taste. Drizzle with dressing and sprinkle capers over to finish.

Serve with fresh crusty char-grilled hot bread of your choice.

Scott will share insights from his book, “Understanding the Divine Gut”, as well as preparing a delicious food dish and sharing recipes from his upcoming “Let’s Eat RAW” recipe book.

According to Scott, you can eat well to be well.

“After overcoming a challenging experience with chronic acid reflux and weight gain, my passion for healthy and raw food has evolved into a lifestyle that not only supports me personally but can also assist others,” he said. “I no longer live with chronic digestive issues.

“The secret is to put more live and natural foods into your body to achieve optimum health – no

matter what age. Raw food is not about limitation, it’s about liberation!”

Slow Food Noosa President Erika Hackett said they were extremely pleased to have Scott provide a preview to his soon-to-bereleased RAW food recipe book and to shed some light on the benefits of a raw food lifestyle.

Easter at Noosa Civic Shopping will be celebrated with an exciting sneak preview of chefs appearing at the Noosa International Food & Wine Festival. The live cooking demonstrations will feature talented chefs from local restaurants, Noosa Boathouse and Sirocco.

Just doesn’t get any easier, does it. I thought I had the games covered last weekend but I again underestimated and probably disrespected some teams because of their standing last season and their playing personnel.

I unfortunately listened to my neighbour, ‘The Shearer’, last week and he was emphatic that both the Broncos and the Cowboys would be certainties to win.

How wrong, and just as well he is a better barber than tipster!

The Titans are still leading the comp and the game’s experts just can’t come to terms that they are going okay. They say the Titan’s run will come to an end, but the proof is in the pudding and I reckon they can make a good fist of it this season. The Tigers, another team not expected to go well, are cruising in second position, while the Eels have defied all and sundry with their positive play and their ability to beat the more fancied teams.

Manly are still good, while the Rabbits and Canterbury are stringing some wins together.

The Roosters and Broncos have stalled, albeit both a tad unlucky.

This weekend is the big Easter weekend of footy and we have three games on Friday with the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs battling

With Robbie Farrah out the Tigers are likely to struggle against the Eels on Sunday

it out in Sydney, the Knights and Broncos in Newcastle and the Sea Eagles and Cowboys at Blue Tongue Stadium. The Rabbitohs and Bulldogs should be a very physical game with both sides big and strong. I will go with the Rabbits mainly because Greg Inglis is playing so well. Rabbitohs in a close one.

The Broncos will need to be on their game against the Knights especially in Newcastle. The Knights are going okay and with Jarrod Mullen back they look a different team. I will stay loyal to the Broncos, just. Broncos by 2.

The final Friday night game will see the in-form Sea Eagles battle the out-of-form and very disappointing Cowboys. I just can’t put my finger on why the Cowboys are in the slump they are in. Are they happy in the

north? Time will tell. I hate doing this but Manly in a canter.

On Super Saturday the Dragons tackle the Warriors in a mustwin game for both teams. The Warriors don’t travel well and the Dragons seem to grow another leg at home. Hard one this one, but the Dragons for me by 10.

The other Saturday night game should be interesting with the Sharks hosting the out of sorts Roosters. The Sharks should get a few good players back this week, but even at home I can’t see them beating the Roosters who will be desperate. Roosters by 12. On Sunday the Raiders host the Storm in what is a must win for the Raiders. The Raiders have had the edge on the Storm but I just can’t pick them this time. Storm by 8.

should be a beauty with the Eels playing host to the Tigers. Both sides are in very good form and have defied all the tipsters. With Robbie Farrah out and the Eels at home and on a high they should prove too electric for the Tigers.

The Monday night game should also be very entertaining with the table-topping Titans travelling to the mountains to take on the much improved Penrith Panthers. Panthers at home are good and a tough assignment for the Titans. Many will not tip the Titans so I will. Titans by 4 in a very close game.

Improvement needed before Anzac showdown TIGER TALK JULIAN PITTS

The Fiona Winter Realty and PJ Burns Noosa Tigers made it three from three to go into the Easter break second on the ladder, with a 96-point win over league cellar dwellars Caboolture at Burpengary last Saturday.

On another very steamy April afternoon, on a magnificent new playing surface, the Noosa boys were extremely error-riddled and undisciplined as they took care of their noticeably undermanned opponents. And while three from three cannot be understated when starting a new season and competition, it was evident that the Tigers are still well short of a gallop with regard to hitting targets and complying with the game structures new coach James Gellie is putting in place.

Those views were particular-

ly observed by club stalwart and current opposition analyst assistant Brad Cross who stated: “It looks convincing on the scoreboard but too many blokes just aren’t switched on to what our game structures are, whether it be a misunderstanding or just lack of listening. Also, we just butcher the ball so much, missing foot passes over 15m distances all day. There’s certainly heaps of improvement to do and we will need to do it if we are going to be competitive against Maroochy down there on Anzac weekend.”

Individually, however, there were some outstanding performers, none better than 16-yearold senior debutant Jesse Malthouse, who found the footy regularly and used it far better than many of his more experienced peers. Nick Sutton again was great up forward booting 7 goals while Hughson and Corrigan were also prevalent and busy players for the Tigers.

Again Jai Fitzpatrick showed why he is a player to watch as he continued his terrific start to the season with Brett Duke

and Harry Opie others that deserve commendation. A win’s a win and we will certainly take it into the Easter break.

up for selection with another really good showing. Don`t be surprised also to see champion rover and three-time Best and Fairest Cubby Isles back for the Anzac weekend clash against arch rivals Maroochy at Fishermans Road on Saturday week. Will be one not to missed!

Noosa takes first gold in beach events BETWEEN THE FLAGS RON LANE

The final results from the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships held at Perth have revealed some interesting facts. For the Noosa club the Masters team finished second overall in Australia and the Opens came home with 13 medals: one gold, nine silver and three bronze. The gold was the first ever for Noosa in the beach events. This came about when Rohani Bakhach won the U19 women’s beach flags.

Over the hill at Sunshine they won two gold medals and a bronze.

The interesting thing in this medal count is that medals came from events that are generally considered to be what lifesaving is all about champion lifesaver, patrol champion and board rescue. Both the patrol and the board rescue teams won gold and the champion lifesaver won bronze. In the words of club President Craig Law, “In the last six

years we have won three gold medals in the National Patrol Championship and this is something of which we are very proud.”

VALE SID HILLIER Forty three years is a long time.

So when someone who has dedicated this period of time to a club passes away, it is only natural that those involved will want to assemble, acknowledge and pay their respects.

So it came to pass that some 80plus members from the various surf lifesaving clubs on the Sunshine Coast gathered at Marcoola to bid farewell to Marcoola Life Member Sid Hillier, who passed away after a long illness.

Sid was a member of Marcoola

for just under 43 years and his record shows that his contribution was definitely second-to-none. Joining in 1971 he held various positions. In the area of junior activities he held the positions of Chairman 74-76, Treasurer 81-83 and Team Manager 75/76. In the senior club he served as Secretary 76-79, Treasurer 7779 and the big one, Club President 86-88. Following this Sid worked for several years as Marcoola Club Administrator until his retirement in 1999. Also, during this period he stepped up to Sunshine Coast Branch Management level where he also held office.

In the junior division he served as Secretary in 87, Treasurer in 8891, and Senior Treasurer, also in 88-91. Like all dedicated members

Sid had his visions and one of those was Project 92, the rebuilding of the entire clubhouse upstairs and down.

As well as giving the members an updated clubhouse it also enabled them in 1993, to start trading as a licensed club.

Speaking on behalf of the club President Dave McLean said, “Sid will be remembered as the former administrator, stalwart and lynch pin of the club for many years. His arrival here in the 1970s saw him get immediately active within the club and he was soon holding office positions.” To show lasting respect to this great member the club unanimously decided that the function room at present being renovated will be known as the Hillier Room and a plaque acknowledging this will be placed on the wall for all to see.

During my years as both a member of the Sunshine Coast Board of Examiners and Noosa Management Committee Sid was always there for us. On many occasions he told my colleagues and I, “Remember boys I am just a phone call away. Don’t hesitate, I will always help.”

As a result of his hard work, dedication and above all his loyalty to the lifesaving movement in general, Sid Hillier was, in July 1997 awarded Life Membership of the Sunshine Coast Branch.

TEWANTIN NOOSA BOWLS CLUB A youthful Josh Andersen and an experienced Troy “Moppy” Rowley won the 2014 Men’s A Championship from the accomplished pair of Bryn Whitcombe and Daryl Birt in last Sunday’s final. It was a high quality match with Josh and Troy winning 21-16. There were only three shots in it going to the last end. The high standard match kept the large number of spectators interested with some fine examples of draw bowling.

Josh has recently joined our club and comes from a bowling family. Not since we saw Michael Adsett win the men’s club championship and Kelsey Cottrell also winning as teenagers, have we had a promising junior in our ranks. Kelsey has gone on to become a top national and international bowler while Michael cut his career short when he joined the Australian Defence Force. We look forward to seeing more of Josh in the future.

NOOSA HEADS BOWLS CLUB The major happening last week at NHBC was the staging of the April edition of the monthly Suncorp Noosa 1500 Open Pairs, which again attracted a capacity field of 96 bowlers. First-prize winners were locals Dennis Coulter and Kerry Roberts over Rainbow Beach entry Costa Das and Kane Sherry. Winners of the first round losers section were Ian and Pam Dufty from Club Maroochy with runners-up Denis and Joy McManus, also from that club. The next one is scheduled for Monday, May 5.

The ladies A-Singles championship has reached the semi-final stage with Ursula Ford to meet Yvonne Walsh, and Gill MacDonald to play Pat Teale. Those matches are set down to be played next week.

The normal Friday game will be shifted to Thursday this Easter week but Saturday bowls will be on, as usual, with triples and nominated pairs.

The monthly Madill’s Day challenge had a good roll up. The winners were G Mitchell and B Mahoney. B Cunnington and R Hassall were runners-up. B French and J Clarke were winners of round 1 and S French and A Lerch were the victors in Round 2.

The Eumundi Boys hold the lead in the High Rollers. JACs are in second place with four teams vying for third position. Cormorants and Horrors are equal last.

POMONA BOWLS CLUB Another tight game in the Ladies A Grade Singles saw a shot-for-shot game go to Gaye Bible who defeated Veronis O’Connor 25-23. Massive turnout as athletes celebrate success

Little Athletics Noosa’s State team celebrate their recent winning performances

MICHELLE MOORE Over 200 athletes and their families attended Little Athletics Noosa’s Annual Awards and Presentation night recently to celebrate their outstanding achievements during the summer season at local, state and national levels.

Chase Stone, 12 (Senior Captains Trophy); Justin Coglan, eight (Out of Stadia Trophy); Jordan Csabi, 17 (Highest achiever, Noosa Athletics) and Amy Brice, 12 (Champion Athlete of the Year).

ognised for their participation throughout the season with the presentation of special individual trophies - a highlight of the evening for all the four and five-year old athletes.

The awards night was also an opportunity for the 24 ath-

letes who competed at the IGA State Championships, held recently in Cairns, to be recognised for their achievements.

In between breaks of rain showers and high humidity the athletes competed in 66 individual events and claimed 18

medals - five gold, five silver and eight bronze.

The Noosa athletes are now taking a well-deserved break from regular competition nights, before school cross-country championships begin next term.

Juniors rack up the wins Blizzard trumps Typhoon in summer battle ANITA ANDERSON

The Noosa Touch season is well underway and our juniors are on fire.

In the U10 division, Good Shepherd came out on top in a close encounter against Cool Runnings with Armin, Riley and Joel having great games.

Maroons and Blazers played well with Maroons taking the win with Zayne M leading the way. In a battle of the girls Candy Girls had a win against Twisters with Ava, Parker and Alla giving strong performances.

In the U12s Good Shepherd had a win over Purple Storm and Leisha, Bella and Tenay were standouts this week. Saints had a hard fought win against That Cool Team with Pearl, Lucy and Jack putting in great efforts for their teams. Banana Splits had a convincing win over Steppers. Monique,

Noah G and Shaylee produced first-rate games.

Wrapping up Wednesday’s fixtures with the U14/16 games, St Teresa’s Maroon won against Good Shepherd and Maggie, Amelia and Abbey had mighty games. NDHS 8s (boys) defeated NDHS 9s (girls) in a close game, with strong performances by Jerry-Lee, Billy and Lexie. In another close game SBSHS 16s went down to Inferno Abby, Samuel and Fraser producing great games. NDSHS 8s Blue came away with the points against St Teresa’s Black, with Keziah, Anna and Tayla leading the way. Last but not least ABL2 Driving School ran out winners against Noosa 8s Green with Lily and Danielle putting in mighty efforts this week.

Play of the Week belongs to Noah G from the Steppers for outstanding sportsmanship, showing honesty and integrity in his U12 game. Junior competition resumes on Wednesday, April 23.

Easter family fishing fun JACK MANGROVE Easter is upon us and what a great time to hit the water! Hopefully the weather gods will be kind to us with fine day and light winds.

Offshore things have been fantastic with wahoo, mackerel and tuna all being caught in numbers on the inner and outer reefs. To target a nice mackerel why not try trolling a River 2 Sea Torpedo lure.

The Torpedo is a fast trolling lure that dives up to nine meters and is perfect for trolling along the edges of Sunshine or Chardon’s reef. While you are

out there trolling don’t forget to keep an eye out for bird activity as this is usually a good indicator that the pelagics are hitting the bait fish from underneath and bringing the bait to the surface - the perfect time to try a metal slug. If you can match the baitfish size with the size of the slug this will greatly increase your chances.

In the river there has been a fair bit of activity. For those that have braved the weather the jacks have been feeding aggressively. It seems every time we have a bit of average weather these fish come on strong. Small bait fish and prawn imitation lures are perfect, especially in the low light

time of day. There are still plenty of whiting down toward the mouth of the river as the clean water pushes up with the tide. Crabs have also been on the march, with the lower reaches of the river proving the most productive.

Kani’s boxers take out titles Four local boxers made the long trip to Freemantle, WA, to compete in the Australian Amateur Boxing Association Titles and Commonwealth Games selection tournament, representing Queensland and the Noosa Box Office.

division; Helena Slaats in the Jnr 60kg division, and Abbie Slavin in the Jnr 57kg division.

Trainer Israel Kani said all four boxers earned their way to the Australian Titles after performing well and scoring recent wins in the Qld Titles and several lead up tournaments.

And they didn’t let him down – they all gave it everything they had, with Abbie and Helena winning their titles.
