Flexicar general manager Greg Giraud said the service, which boasted a few hundred members across the municipality, was a good alternative to public transport or families needing a second car.

“Studies suggest one car share vehicle replaces between eight to 14 privately owned vehicles and Maribyrnong City Council supports the introduction of the Flexicar car share scheme to give residents and businesses access to a convenient, costeffective sustainable transport option.

“Flexicar members drive an average 500km per year compared with the usual 15,000kms driven by a car owner.

Maribyrnong Mayor Grant Miles said car sharing was a great solution to parking issues across the municipality.

CAR sharing is gaining traction in the City of Maribyrnong.

Car share service Flexicar has expanded their service across Footscray, Yarraville and Seddon with the introduction of new locations in Yarraville’s Ballarat St, Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus, Albert St in Seddon and at the Yarraville Train Station near the bus and drop-off area.

The Ballarat St and Victoria University locations will each include two Flexicar vehicles.

The cars, which are generally located close to public transport and in mixed-use areas, can be used for durations from one hour to three days.

The cars are generally compact fuel-efficient vehicles that are fully maintained by Flexicar.

According to the Flexicar website, users must pay a $70 annual membership fee to get started.

Rates fluctuate depending on usage and drivers can pay an hourly or daily rate. Other Flexicar locations in the municipality include Greig St in Seddon and Somerville Rd in

Reading is on the straight and narrow YOUNG bookworms in the City of Maribyrnong now have a new collection of books to burrow their noses into.

A collection of bookshelves and ottomans built by prisoners at the Metropolitan Remand Centre have been installed at the Braybrook and Maidstone Neighbourhood House, along with books donated by Department of Justice staff and local schools and libraries.

The Learning Corner is an initiative from the Department of Justice where community centres will receive bookshelves, ottomans and books to create a dedicated reading space for local families.

Children visiting the learning corners will be able to take books home to read, keep them if they wish or return to swap the next time they visit.

“The Learning Corner Project acknowledges that there are enormous benefits to reading as a child and that reading should be an integral part of growing up,” Stephen

Cadman from the Department of Justice said.

“Unfortunately, for those less fortunate it is not always possible to have engaging books available for parents with young children.

“With the resources, hopefully more children in the area will be given the opportunity to embrace reading from an early age.

“This is also a chance for offenders to develop skills that are transferable to the outside world which in turn helps reduce the likelihood of their re-offending.”

Prisoners at the Metropolitan Remand Centre have built the bookshelves, with offenders on community correction orders building the ottomans.

Community members using the service will also be encouraged to donate books to the program to help keep the bookshelves replenished.

Time for a change VICROADS will be increasing amber light time at some intersections in coming weeks following a recent review of the national traffic management guidelines.

In Victoria, the recommended amber time at intersections where the approach speed is 80km/h will increase from 4.5 seconds to 5 seconds and in 90km/h zones, from 5 to 5.5 seconds. There will be no change to signal timing for turning lanes.

driver or rider to react and the distance it would take a vehicle to come to a stop,” VicRoads road operations director Dean Zabrieszach said.

“While motorists will be getting slightly more time to clear an intersection at certain sites, I want to reiterate that amber lights are not an extension of green time.”

All traffic signals affected by the adoption of these guidelines will be adjusted to the new timing by Friday 4 July, while the 39 intersections with road safety cameras will be adjusted by this Friday.

FOOTSCRAY’S State Emergency Service (SES) members are working with other emergency services to produce a co-ordinated response to emergency situations.

The crew is working with other SES branches, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and the Country Fire Authority on a combined strategy to approach largescale emergencies like bushfires and storms in the same way.

Currently, each service had their own procedures and methods when attending an emergency situation, but Footscray SES controller Faye Bendrups said the

current method caused confusion and overlapping roles.

Ms Bendrups, who was the staging area manager in Orbost during this year’s bushfire in Gippsland, said the emergency management overhaul was necessary.

“Of course, you need to have specialised areas of interest ... but in terms of the management of emergency situations, you need experienced people to deal with overseeing a major event,” she said.

“According to experts, there are more emergency events (like bushfires and storms), and more severe events, and they predict it will keep on increasing.”

In recent years, Footscray SES members have been deployed to a range of emergency situations, including the Black Saturday bushfires and the 2013 Tasmanian bushfires.

To ensure members remain prepared, Ms Bendrups has instituted a weekly scenario-based training program so that they can seamlessly get into their roles when real-life emergency situations occur.

“We’re replicating, on a unit level, what happens in a large-scale emergency every week so that people aren’t confused when they’re suddenly thrust into it.”

Joint West jobs plea

By XAVIER SMERDON ALL SIX councils from across the western suburbs have united in a desperate bid to try and stop the region from losing more jobs.

Melbourne’s West Economic Response Taskforce was recently formed and met for the first time earlier this month with representatives from Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Wyndham and Moonee Valley attending.

CEO of western suburbs advocacy group LeadWest, Craig Rowley, said the Taskforce was formed as a reaction to the end of motor vehicle manufacturing in the West.

He said that following Ford’s closure announcement in 2013, the Federal and State Government’s established funding to be applied over three years in recognition of the economic and social of the economic and social impact of the closure on communities in Geelong and Melbourne’s North.

“Taskforce representatives from LeadWest and the local governments of Melbourne’s West unanimously agreed that fair and equitable treatment is a must,” Mr Rowley said.

“The Taskforce will formally request that the Australian and Victorian Government deliver a

significant and comprehensive adjustment package to be applied in Melbourne’s West.

“This would be on par with how Geelong and Melbourne’s North were helped.”

Mr Rowley said the Taskforce would also try to help people that had lost their jobs to find new employment opportunities.

“The Taskforce will help facilitate a successful transition from jobs exited at Toyota, Ford and Holden into other jobs and sectors,” he said.

“It will also have an eye to the longer term and redouble efforts to grow and diversify the economy of

Melbourne’s West so there are improved job opportunities closer to where people live.”

In February Toyota announced that it would stop making cars in Australia by 2017, with the loss of 2500 jobs.

The announcement came after last year’s announcements that Ford will cease production in October 2016 and Holden would stop by 2017.

It is expected that more than 50,000 jobs could be lost in the automotive manufacturing industry, with many of those jobs coming from Melbourne’s West.

Footscray resident Kelly Jean has put her hand up for this year’s Miss Humanity Australia Pageant, a competition that advocates humanitarian causes through raising funds and awareness.

The 28-year-old teacher has been busy raising money for the Open Family Foundation, and ran a food drive and fund-raising fashion show at West Footscray’s Bianco Café over the weekend for the charity.

“I selected the Open Family Foundation, because they have a strong outreach program in the Footscray community, and I wanted to keep my charity within the community,” Ms Jean said.

“The reason I got behind Miss Humanity is because I wanted to be a role model within my local community and to have the opportunity to be able to advocate for causes.

“It’s not a typical beauty pageant - it’s more about teaching young people to become advocates and role models within their community.

“It’s not a traditional beauty pageant in the sense that you don’t have to get up and wear swimwear or anything like that.

“I think it’s taking it one step ahead of other beauty pageants that are based predominantly on beauty.”

State finals for the Miss Humanity Pageant are on this week, and Ms Jean will don a suit and do an interview where she discusses what she would do if crowned Miss Humanity.

Murder charge A 21-YEAR-OLD woman has been charged with murder after the stabbing death of a man in Yarraville last week.

Brittany Johnstone, of Yarraville, appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday where she was remanded in custody and was ordered to reappear in court on 28 July.

Police were called to a home in Blackwood St around 10.45pm on 7 April and found a 33-yearold Werribee man with fatal stab wounds.

It is believed that both parties were known to each other.

“Crimes against the person, particularly between people known to each other are a significant problem for us,” Footscray Police Inspector Tony Long said.

“It is often very difficult for us to undertake policing activities to prevent incidents between people known to each other.

“Tragic incidents such as this highlight how important early intervention can be to prevent escalation to far more serious consequences.”

Riders on rise

By CHARLENE MACAULAY CITY of Maribyrnong residents are jumping on two wheels to get around town.

That’s the word from Maribyrnong City Council, whose annual bike count has revealed that cycling has become an increasingly popular mode of transport across the municipality.

The bike count found that bicycle routes into Melbourne’s CBD were most in demand, with the Moreland and Napier streets intersection the most heavily used route with nearly 700 riders recorded travelling through the passage.

Meanwhile, the Albert and Irving streets intersection and the Hyde and Napier streets intersection both showed significant increases in female cyclists compared with the 2013 bike count.

“Cycling is a sustainable, healthy and cost effective transport option and it is fantastic that it is continuing to grow in popularity in the municipality,” Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said.

Maribyrnong City Council has 22 kilometres of dedicated on-road bike lanes, plus another 22 kilometres of off-road paths and eight kilometres of shared walking and cycling paths.

Chairman of the RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council, Jim Giddings, said that the public holiday would bring extra challenges for road users.

“Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road,” Mr Giddings said.

“If you plan on having a drink then plan not to drive.

Taking a big risk like drink

driving is just not worth endangering your life or other road users.”

Mr Giddings said while the holiday period and the arrival of wet weather would create more risks, speeding drivers were still the number one danger on Victoria’s roads.

“It has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face,” he said.

“Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.”

Mr Giddings said it was up

to the community to make a stand against dangerous driving.

“Engaging a changing community will assist in the community taking on the responsibility of understanding the effects and consequences of speeding and rivers that speed,” he said.

“The community being involved through awareness of issues in their local area will encourage community policing and reporting so that compliance with speed limits improves.”

Veronica Milsom’s solo sketch performance in Do Not Irony includes almost entirely true stories of on-set mishaps, the ridiculously commercialised weight market and her shameless obsession with her favourite singer Enya.

“It’s something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and I’m finally doing it.

“It’s taken a really long time to develop, but basically it’s a one-woman sketch show with about 20 disparate sketches that kind of all link together,” she said.

“It’s things that have kind of happened to me working in radio or working as an actor.

“They’re pretty absurd, they’re very me ... I’ve done

panel TV shows and stuff where I feel like I’ve played a role, but this is actually my sense of humour and what I think,” Ms Milsom said.

“I think it’s kind of super scary to be doing it all by myself and to be just doing my rehearsals in my lounge room at home in Footscray with my dog as the only one just watching on, but I think it’s going to be rewarding.

“I hope everyone loves it.”

By CHARLENE MACAULAY A SHORT film about being absorbed by technology has scooped the pool at the inaugural Setting Sun Short Film Festival.

Former Footscray resident Roman Meyer won four awards for his film Senseless, including Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Short Feature West and Best Film Western Suburbs.

“I was totally stoked,” Mr Meyer said.

“It was great that Senseless was nominated and made it into the finals. Winning four awards on top of that was unexpected.”

Mr Meyer said the film was about a future where the human race had forgotten how to rely on their basic senses due to infatuation with mobile devices.

“We rely on data about our surroundings instead of looking and listening for ourselves; and we no longer use touch and body language to communicate and start relationships with each other.” “(I was inspired) just by looking around and observing how people are totally engrossed in their mobile devices as they journey through their day.

“They are not aware of what’s going on around them anymore.

“It’s not uncommon these days to see couples or groups of friends sitting at a restaurant, not talking to each other, and checking things on their phones.”

By CHARLENE MACAULAY A FOOTSCRAY film-maker has received a grant to help Australian South Sea Islanders explore their heritage and identity through a multimedia storytelling project.

Amie Batalibasi will spend the next year inviting Australian South Sea Islanders to media making and storytelling workshops in Brisbane and teaching them how to turn their own personal stories into a video or photo montage.

At the end of the project, the videos, photos and stories produced by project participants will be presented in a public screening event in Brisbane.

The Australian South Sea Islander Stories (ASSI Stories) project will be run in conjunction with ASSIS Inc., a Brisbane-based group that aims to raise the profile of Australian South Sea Islanders.

Australian South Sea Islanders are the descendants of some 60,000 Pacific Islanders who were brought to Australia during the late 19th century as pastoralists, to build the cotton and sugar cane industry of Queensland and later northern New South Wales.

Ms Batalibasi has been involved in many community film and media projects in the past - including Pacific Stories, Wantok Stori and the Young Media Makers Project - and said she was honoured to be the creative producer on this project.

“During the 150-year commemoration events last year, I volunteered with ASSIS Inc. to help run some community screenings showing films about Australian South Sea Islanders,” she said.

“It was surprising to see how little video content there is, that has been made by ASSI communities themselves.

“I hope that the ASSI Stories project will be a first step towards changing that.”

The stand-up comedian and journalist has written an ode about all the failed loves in her life, titled Boyfriends We’ve All Had (And Shouldn’t Have).

The book is a humourous take on the dating scene.

Mr Moocher, Mr Cheaty Pants, Mr Messy, Mr Can’t Commit and many others are outed on Ms Nolan’s journey to find Mr Right.

“It’s not a revenge story - although, that’s terribly tempting - but it’s a story of all those funny experiences and the things you learn on the pathway of finding a partner that fits you,” Ms Nolan said.

“I was always attracted to very dysfunctional relationships or typical bad boys, or men that couldn’t commit, as were many, many of my friends.

“I’ve chapterised men into these kind of adult versions of Mr Men characters ... it’s my experience, my friends’ experience, and I’ve found it was a much more fun way to

explore a relationship.”

In a nod to her former loves, Ms Nolan said they weren’t all bad deep down.

“I think I’ve made, as a lot of women do, a lot of rough and ready men relationship-ready for the future.

“They may not be good now, but 10 years’ down the track, after you’ve put some work in, another woman gets the benefit - and that’s part of the system.”

Ms Nolan will talk about Boyfriends We’ve All Had (And Shouldn’t Have) at Yarraville’s Sun Bookshop on Tuesday 29 April. This is a free event.

The Cavallaros, which have run the T. Cavallaro and Sons Pasticceria in Footscray for nearly 60 years, have been busy making this Sicilian delicacy for their customers in the leadup to this weekend.

The Pascal Lamb - or Agnello Pasquale - is a traditional Sicialian Easter treat made with

sponge cake and fruit mince in a marzipan mould. “(Catholics) used to sacrifice lamb in the name of Christ,” owner Tony Cavallaro said.

“Lambs are also a sign of peace. Giving a Pascal Lamb is like giving a symbol of peace.”

Mr Cavallaro said the popularity of Pascal Lambs had been dying off, but in recent years had enjoyed a resurgence.

Now, the demand for Pascal Lambs is so high, Tony and the extended Cavallaro family - including brothers, sons, nieces

and nephews - start working weeks in advance to produce enough moulds in time for Easter.

In another nod to tradition, Mr Cavallaro makes the treats using the same plaster casts his grandfather used more than 120 years ago.

“These (moulds) are precious - you can’t get them anywhere.

“The pleasure, for me, in making them, is doing something I used to see my dad do.

“It’s not Easter unless I make a few of these.”

Coffee Culture Has anyone else noticed lately that people have started talking about coffee in the same way we talk about fine wine? Personally, I start to glaze over when people start going on above the wonderful caramel undertones in their soy mocha decaf macchiatos or the proportion of milk foam to steamed milk in their flat whites. Is it Fair Trade coffee? Certified organic? Were the coffee beans carted downhill by mules from the mountains of Colombia?

It’s all a little bit pretentious for me, but what would I know?

While I’m a sucker for a good latte, I’m no coffee snob. I’ll happily make do if instant coffee’s the only thing on offer.

Once upon a time, it WAS the only option you’d have at work.

Remember the industrial-sized tin of International Roast or Nescafe Blend 43 standing tall and proud by the sink in the office kitchen? Nowadays, coffee machines are not only a standard feature of most work kitchens, we’ve become so reliant upon them that if the machine happens to break down, everyone goes into meltdown, kicking and screaming.

I know people who are so determined never to have granulated instant coffee pass their lips, they carry their own

coffee bags everywhere with them.

One of my husband’s friends and regular lunch mates is quite pedantic about the temperature of his coffee, and always insists on ordering it “extra hot.” Why, I hear you ask? Isn’t that how coffee is served? But unless it’s hot enough to scald the tastebuds clean off your tongue, this bloke won’t drink it.

Admittedly, we have a Nespresso coffee machine in our house and use it all the time. My husband says he will never drink instant coffee again. If instant’s the only thing on offer, he’d prefer to go without.

My mum absolutely loves her coffee, so we bought her a coffee machine for Christmas. But when I asked her recently if she uses it, she looked a bit sheepish.

She’s always been partial to a cup of Moccona freeze-dried instant coffee and I think she’d sooner have that than muck around with frothing milk with coffee pods.

shorts Spurs ready for season kick-off THE VU St Albans Spurs are looking to improve after a tough 2013 in the Victorian Women’s Football League. The Spurs struggled in the competition’s Premier grade but enter the new season with a solid pre-season under their belts. St Albans will be led by new coach Sean Potter who has replaced Matthew Russell. Potter said he had been rapt with the hard work and commitment his playing group had shown throughout the pre-season. “The girls’ willingness to learn has been fantastic, so from a coaching point of view it has been really easy to teach them the new things,” Potter said. “Obviously with a lot of new girls it has made it some what difficult because you have to really strip it back to the basics. That has even helped some of the older and more experienced players. With footy, the good players do the basics well. It has been a really good pre-season. The fitness levels are up and there is a really good buzz around the club.” St Albans will kick off its Premier Division season with a home game against Bendigo at Kings Park Reserve.

Jets win in fly-by

By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Western Jets’ round four clash with the Northern Territory was a non-event at Cragieburn’s Highgate Reserve on Sunday.

In what was the Territory’s first competitive hit-out ahead of the national under-18 carnival later this year, the winless Jets scored their first win of their 2014 campaign in cruise control, finishing up 122-point victors.

The result was sealed after just one quarter of footy, with the Jets storming out of the block with five unanswered goals in the opening term.

By half-time the margin had already blown out to 44 points and in

the third term it only got worse for the visiting Thunder, with the Jets piling on another 10 unanswered goals to break away to a three-figure lead before the three-quarter time siren.

In the end the Jets kicked 23 goals for the game to the Territory’s three in what could prove an important percentage-booster come season’s end.

Coach Torin Baker has been upbeat about his side’s form in recent weeks and on Sunday was happy to finally see his boys enjoy a win.

“We’ve been getting better and better each week,” Baker said.

“But ultimately we hadn’t got a win on the board and the players were obviously keen for that, so to

get a result like that today - even though Northern Territory were obviously experimenting with their squad - we were still really happy with the way the guys played.

“We dominated the clearances and I think we had a little bit of extra height than they had, so we had some match-ups that were well in our favour and we were able to expose that.”

Tylar Vujanic backed up his good showing against Oakleigh last week with a five-goal haul on Sunday, while Mitch Norton and Brenton Payne got three.

Payne’s marking presence inside forward 50 was a feature of the otherwise featureless game.

By LIAM TWOMEY WEST Footscray added more weight to its status as a Division Two premiership contender after beating Caroline Springs on Saturday.

Despite leading at every change, the match was a lot closer than the score suggested, with both sides sharing the momentum throughout the afternoon.

After taking a four-point lead into three-quarter time, West Footscray blew the game open in the final term thanks to a six-goal-to-three burst, sealing the 29-point win.

It was a battle of the key forwards throughout the afternoon with Caroline

Spring’s Shaun Buttigieg-Clarke booting seven goals while West Footscray’s Damien Yze finished with six majors of his own.

LOOKING further down the line, Spurs Sean Potter said he expected Melbourne Uni to be a contender come the business end of the season along with Darebin and St Kilda. “I think you really can’t go past Darebin,” he said. “From what I have heard they haven’t lost any players and they seem to be travelling along quite nicely so I would say they will definitely be up there. “Melbourne Uni I would say would be up there too. They have a good system going on there and I would expect them to be one of the stronger teams. “St Kilda has also recruited quite well ... so they will probably be another tough one to knock off.”

The fact I work for the club is irrelevant in terms of my opinion on this subject, but I wanted to clarify it anyway. It is very obvious that the timetable for the ground use was available for everyone. So it was no surprise. I know a curator in similar circumstances had his ground ready and playable a week before the ground at Werribee. Blame is of little value, but everyone must learn from this so it does not occur in the future. I sometimes think that some people forget just how important the Werribee Football Club is to the local community and how important it is that it is seen to be totally professional.

ONE of the tough issues at local footy sports clubs is the serving of alcohol. Most of our clubs have a junior element, and that has its own set of rules and parameters, I would hope.

I want to pose a few questions and see what you think. What time do you think you should start serving alcohol on match days? Should you serve players in their jumpers? I should point out I am not directing this at any specific club, it is just a random overview of drinking at the footy. I see a lot of different versions of the rules of what should happen each week. I look forward to your thoughts.

SOMETIMES you see a player and wonder why he is not plying his trade at a higher level and Kwame McHarg is one of those players. He is definitely a cut above suburban footy in terms of skill and talent. So why hasn’t he gone to the highest level. It is a question that has haunted footy people for years and will continue to do so.

I think of great VFL players like Grant Smith, Brett McTaggart, Richie Raeburn and Trent Churchill who did not play at the next level but should have, and I hope Kwame is not going to be a similar story. He has all the skills I hope he gets his chance and at 22 years of age that should not be an issue.

GREAT win by the Bulldogs over the Giants last weekend and this week they face their former coach in Mick Malthouse and his Carlton side. Mick was terrific for the Bulldogs in his time, taking the team to the 1985 preliminary final, where they missed a grand final appearance by a few points. I was critical of Mick on my FOX FM Breakfast Show when he left the Bulldogs at the end of the 1989 season, and he has never forgotten it. I found that out a few years ago at a Bulldogs function when he gave it to me with both barrels. For me, life is too short for those sorts of grudges, but it does give me some extra spice every time our teams come up against each other. Another Sunday twilight game though is not my favourite time slot but as it is Easter and school holidays I hope we get a good crowd.

CITY West Falcons are in prime position to win their third consecutive Victorian Netball League Championships after a flawless first half of the season. The Falcons have smashed their rivals and sit on top of the ladder with a perfect 8-0 win/loss record.

City West coach Marg Lind was rapt with her side’s start to the season and admitted the perfect record was unexpected.

“I think a good indicator was that we played the (Melbourne) Vixens a couple of times in the pre-season and did quite well,” Lind said.

“That was an indicator that we certainly had some depth.

“To predict that we were going to be here 8-0, maybe not. It is nice but I’m not sure it is something we necessarily expected.”

To highlight City West’s dominance, only once this season has its winning margin been kept to single digits. That was in round eight when Western Suburbs rival VU Western Lightning lost by nine.

“I think the three areas (shooters, mid-court and defence) have held well together,” Lind said.

“The defenders have been exceptional.

“I think Clare (Moylan) and Maggie (Lind) as a mid-court combination have benefited from not having had to go off the court very often. We don’t have big numbers in the team and they have developed through on going court time and we are able to mix them up in two different positions.

“The goalers have worked very well. In the past we have had a tall post in shooter and a more dynamic goal attack which has won us a lot of premierships. This year we have got that plus two dynamic goalers that we can put together as well.”

When round nine of the VNL season gets underway this weekend, the Falcons will be red hot favourites to extend their winning streak to nine when they take on bottom of the ladder, Fed Uni Ballarat Pride.

City West is two games clear on top of the VNL ladder with Boroondara Genesis in second spot. Lind said her overall goal for the season of adding another premiership to the club’s collection hadn’t changed.

“We always want to win,” she said.

“From the start of the season that was our goal. We want to win the premiership. You re-assess every three of four weeks depending on the ladder and your challenges but I’d be lying if I said we weren’t aiming for a premiership. That is certainly our goal.”

Land of smiles for Bulldogs

By LIAM TWOMEY AFTER winning the Victorian Premier Cricket grand final earlier this month, Footscray Edgewater was given even more reasons to smile after the competition’s awards night.

In the Jack Ryder Medal, which is awarded to the best player for the Premier Cricket season, the Bulldogs continued their reputation for consistency with three players finishing in the top 17.

They were Dylan Kight, Travis Dean and Dean Russ, who all polled 21 votes from six matches.

The top prize was won by Prahran’s James Miller.

Miller claimed the Jack Ryder Medal in a dramatic final round, which saw him leapfrog Camberwell’s Simon Hill and St Kilda’s Matt Chasemore.

Miller was the leading wicket-taker in the home and away rounds with 47 wickets at 14.36

and also scored 602 runs at 37.63. Throughout the night, the good news continued for Footscray, which also had two players named in the Victorian Premier Cricket Team of the Year.

Bulldogs captain Russ was joined by gun quick Jake Haberfield in the 12-man side while St Kilda’s Graeme Rummans was named captain.

Other members included David King, Simon Hill, Marcus Stoinis, Matt Chasemore, Aaron Ayre, James Miller, Ian Holland, Bryce McGain and Jake Reed.

Meanwhile, in the women’s Premier Cricket awards, Dandenong Lions all-rounder Sarah Elliott claimed her second Una Paisley Medal for the Premier Player of the Season.

The 32-year-old polled 36 votes and finished seven votes clear of Box Hill’s Meg Lanning.

O’Keefe set to take helm

By ADEM SARICAOGLU MICHAEL O’Keefe will replace Emmett Bronca as coach of Turf Cricket premier Yarraville Club ahead of the 2014/15 summer.

Bronca - in his first and only year in charge - led the Clubbers through a thrilling finals series that culminated in yet another Senior Division premiership for the club over South Caulfield last month.

But with Bronca looking to become a firefighter with the CFA and hence needing to step down - Yarraville Club turned to another on-field stalwart in O’Keefe.

The middle-order batsman had retired prior to the 2013/14 summer, but was convinced to pad up one more time and was part of the grand final victory.

“I retired at the end of last season, but then I ended up playing three or four games,” O’Keefe said.

“I played a few games with my son, which I thoroughly enjoyed and then played a few games when the club had a few injuries and they needed someone to help out, so I helped out and was fortunate enough to play in another premiership at the end of it.”

With O’Keefe now confirming he is retired for good, he now looks forward to building on the success the Clubbers have enjoyed under Bronca and his predecessor, Justin Baker.

O’Keefe said he didn’t plan to change a whole lot, but was hoping to increase the rate of development within the club’s lower ranks.

“I’m very honoured to be leading the charge and the club giving me the opportunity to do it,” O’Keefe said.

“There isn’t a lot that I really need to change. We’ve been successful at the top level, and I’m coming in where these guys have left a very good platform for me to work with and I just want to pay credit to Emmett and Justin for what they’ve done over the last five years, which has been phenomenal.

“What they’ve done is they’ve left the club in a very strong position - but I think one of the things I’d like to probably bring in is we’re going to be putting a lot of focus on developing some young ones to play at the highest level that they can and hopefully go further as well.”

Town hosts badminton cream

By CHARLENE MACAULAY AN INTERNATIONAL badminton tournament is coming to Maribyrnong.

The Victor Maribyrnong International Series Badminton Tournament will run over four days from 23 April at the Maribyrnong Sports Academy. Men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles play-offs are on the cards.

The competition is open to all 180 countries affiliated with the Badmin-

ton World Federation, and is part of the Oceania Badminton Circuit, a vital leadup event to this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The tournament has been held in Victoria for more than 10 years at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, and last year attracted 171 entries from 10 countries, including Australia, Malaysia, India, the Philippines, Thailand, England, Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan and New Zealand. It’s the first time the event has been held in the municipality.

Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said the council was proud to host an international sporting event of this calibre.

“We have first class sporting facilities and along with our proximity to the CBD and the airport, we are continuing to attract great sport events here in the City of Maribyrnong,” Cr Miles said.

“Badminton is an all-inclusive sport played by all ages, levels and cultural backgrounds and is great fun to play and to watch.”
