GEELONG needs a dedicated court to deal with increasing family violence, according to Barwon Community Legal Service.

Family violence, including offences against children, was growing alarmingly across the region, principal solicitor Mandi Hyland told the Independent.

Police statistics show family violence offences jumped from 713 in 2012 to 876 last year.

Ms Hyland said the legal service was dealing with up to 10 family violence cases a day, three days a week, at Geelong Magistratesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Court.

Family violence covers incidents affecting spouses, children, parents, grandparents, neighbours and carers.

Ms Hyland said the various forms of family violence included financial, emotional and psychological abuse.

Its incidence was increasing in line with growing pressure on households across Geelong as manufacturing jobs disappeared, she said.

The legal service was rallying other support agencies across Geelong to push for a family violence court that would function like existing courts in Melbourne, Sunshine and Heidelberg, Ms Hyland said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It would be a specialist court where they specifically train magistrates and court staff - the people whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be dealing with the applicants - in family violence issues,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;lt would be a much more coordinated approach and the court would be more likely to refer people to behaviour-changing programs because people who could say whether (the programs) were available would be in the court.

The Geelong awards have gone regional in recent years, with the Ballarat and Bendigo/central Victoria regions hosting their own programs.

Regional winners will be announced in October and state champions in November.

The Joeys boys must have been so eager to play that they forgot their SJC jumpers, suffering the ignominy of playing in St Patrick’s training jerseys.

To make matters worse, the Joeys boys lost by 84 points to complete an altogether forgettable day.

A LONG lunchtime queue formed outside a major fastfood outlet in central Geelong when the kitchen ran out a staple item.

No, it wasn’t chicken, it was bacon, a key ingredient in two products the chain was marketing heavily.

Kinda took the ‘fast’ out of fast food.

WELL-INTENTIONED it may be but David Koch’s suggestion Ford workers could find new careers processing abalone left some unimpressed.

The Indy reported last week that Mr Koch, a Liberal state upper house MP, thought the pending expansion of an Indented Head abalone farm could provide departing Ford staff with opportunities “due to their manufacturing experience”.

At the Indy’s website, commenter Nathan did the numbers, calculating that 15 new positions don’t go into 800 lost jobs.

“Yep, two thumbs up there, David Koch,” Nathan wrote.

Clearly he thought Mr Koch was speaking (a)baloney.

KUDOS to Jo-Anne Giuffre for her faith in one-armed bandits, viz, one-cent pokies.

Who says they’re not worth playing? Certainly not Jo-Anne, who was rewarded for championing the bottom-feeder with a tidy $1000 at the local pub.

OCEAN Grove remains divided over a $1 million performance space in its community park despite council voting to develop the facility without owning the land.

Council this week agreed to go ahead with the performance space after last month abandoning an associated transfer of park ownership.

Cr Jan Farrell said council’s $200,000 for Ocean Grove Park Incorporated to develop the facility was safe.

Former mayoral candidate Stephanie Asher said public opinion on the performance space was “definitely divided”.

A lack of “watertight legal protection” and community opposition to the land transfer prevented council going ahead with the acquisition, she said.

Net shortage a ‘shock’ for suburban investor

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A STUDENT accommodation provider fears he will lose tenants because he is unable to connect his Grovedale property to the internet.

Adrian Ikin said he bought the Diaz Dve property to provide Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus students - including his daughter - with nearby accommodation.

But faults and lack of capacity at the Belmont exchange were preventing internect connection, he said.

“I can’t believe in this day and age that we can’t get internet in Geelong.

It’s a big city and not being able to get internet is ridiculous.

“I’ve been told it will be 12 months before I can get it and then only if someone drops off the system.”

Mr Ikin said he would have thought twice about investing in Geelong if he had known about the internet situation.

He had contacted Telstra’s complaints department without resolution, he said.

Telstra told him 50 ADSL2 ports were unavailable due to a fault at the Belmont exchange, which lacked capacity for new connections.

Telstra had no plans to update or repair the exchange, he said.

“The NBN is not planned for the

area and may take five years to connect. Using the 3G network is really expensive and you don’t get much download.

“I’ve got nowhere else to turn.”

Mr Ikin was responding to Geelong councillor Rod Macdonald’s call in the Independent for feedback on internet blackspots around the region.

Cr Macdonald’s B4G campaign follows the release of federal Department of Communications mapping revealing 75 per cent of Geelong has “poor” or “very poor” broadband quality.

Henderson said it was important for the region to “get some relief from the terrible internet speeds we have been suffering”.

Ms Henderson said a Telstra upgrade created 72 new ports for Marshall residents along with backhaul upgrades to increase speeds for customers at Ocean Grove.

“Telstra has further plans to alleviate congestion at exchanges in Belmont, Torquay and Barwon Heads, which should increase speeds for customers,” she said.

“Despite the recent improvements, there are still plenty of problems with internet access in our region.”

MOBILE phone coverage is set to improve on Geelong’s rail line to Melbourne, State Government has announced.

The Government said it would seek expressions of interest in fixing black spots along the line and to provide a wi-fi service on its VLocity commuter trains.

Jobs funded THIRTY-SIX jobs are set to flow after the latest cash injection from a fund set up to help Geelong overcome lost manufacturing jobs.

The Geelong Region Innovation Fund will provide $1.2 million for New South Wales’ trade mailing and fulfilment services to expand its operations in Geelong.

Qantas staff taking off

By NOEL MURPHY FIFTY-FOUR Qantas engineering staff leave Avalon Airport this Friday, marking the end of an era and 16 years of heavy maintenance work at the aerospace precinct.

The job losses, brought forward a week, will take the total cuts at Avalon to more than 300 after 250 Forstaff Aviation contractors departed last month.

Qantas has cut 1500 staff from its engineering operations over the past 18 months with the closure of Avalon and Melbourne Airport maintenance functions and the relocation of all work to Brisbane.

End of jobs era at Avalon Avalon workers yesterday complained a labour hire firm had cut pay rates at Brisbane, stymying their plans to commute and share accommodation in Queensland.

The Avalon sackings, impending closure of Alcoa and Ford plants operations and the sacking of hundreds at Target’s North Geelong headquarters will leave thousands of Geelong workers displaced or facing job losses.

Qantas engineer Tim O’Connor described the mood at Avalon this week

as “pretty upbeat with a lot of black humour”, although the workers were “very sad” about permanently leaving life-long careers.

“They’re pretty cheesed off at what’s happened, with the airline and what’s going on there,” he said.

“But we know there are no other options, so we’ll try to make the most of what we’ve got. It’s a bit sad.”

Mr O’Connor said few had alternative employment and only five of the 54 leaving this week had aircraft work to pursue - in Brisbane and Perth.

The long-running Qantas work at Avalon peaked with about 1000 jobs a decade ago until several sacking tranches in the past two years.

Qantas did not return calls and emails for comment before the Independent went to press. The Independent was unable to gain comment from Avalon Airport management.

Court bid From page 1 “If everyone is specially skilled, it’s more ideal so people can get support and don’t reoffend or remain victims of family violence in the future,” Ms Hyland said.

“Unfortunately, the courts are seeing more and more breaches of family violence and the rate of returns, recidivism, is growing. If we had more support at the first instance perhaps this could be reduced.”

Ms Hyland warned that many children raised in violent households faced long-term damage and needed counselling and support to prevent the impact of their abuse spilling over into the broader community.

Police and welfare agency sources told the Independent family violence across Geelong was a growing problem.

They believed a dedicated court and support could benefit Geelong.

“We already help out but it’s unbelievable,” an agency source said.

Graffiti assault on busy strip angers residents

By NOEL MURPHY A GRAFFITI assault is making Minerva Rd a grubby, untidy mess, according to frustrated residents of Manifold Heights and Herne Hill.

Vandals have targeted shops, houses, fences, bus stop shelters, postboxes and toilets with tags Turk, Mojoh, Rosie One, Dank and Rose.

The graffiti, in characters up to two metres high, stretches from Church St in the north to Peter Lowe Reserve 500 metres south.

Bill Mundy said a disused milk bar next door to his familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mechanical business typified the worst of the attack. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a real eyesore for people living in the street,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People using the bus stop there have to put up with it all, too.â&#x20AC;?

Neighbour David McDougall agreed the vandalism had ruined a pleasant neighbourhood. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a pain, an eyesore,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Friends of Corio Bay Action Group ramped up its campaign with a 400-strong meeting seeking a ban on netting in all bays, estuaries and inlets across Victoria.

The group has also joined forces with Futurefish Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation supporting recreational fishing.

The participants of the rally will be walking on the roads. To ensure everyone’s safety, roads will be closed and re-opened, as the participants travel along the course. Please refer to the map.

GEELONG’S blood service hopes to be overrun with first-time donors after one of its stalwarts gave his 200th donation this week.

Deputy Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood fronted up for the milestone after first giving blood in 1982.

“My father was a dialysis patient and always needed a lot of blood transfusions,” he said.

“Knowing someone who needs blood allows you to see the absolute benefits of donating blood or plasma.”

With the Easter and Anzac Day holidays approaching, the Blood Service is urging locals to fill nearly 200 appointments needed to bolster stocks especially vital to treating cancer patients.

MAYOR Darryn Lyons’ vision for a Central Parktype development in Geelong’s CBD seems more a G21-related vision than his own.

G21 has a number of plans for Geelong yet it is an unelected entity that really should have no business influencing council decision-making.

How can council allocate hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to G21, an unelected, organisation.

This seems hugely inappropriate given that dozens of letters pleading for basic municipal upkeep and refurbishments appear regularly.

Council recently spent upwards of $300,000 refurbishing the forecourt of Geelong West Town Hall but failed to refurbish the disgusting toilets at the rear.

IN REGARDS to the Independent’s 4 April story, headlined ‘MP slams City on truck trials’, I was horrified to receive a letter about trial truck restrictions over six to 12 months and that Ryrie St would take on extra trucks.

A Questions and Answers section on council’s website said: Will this cause any problems for Ryrie Street? The answer was no, it only means 500 more trucks on Ryrie St a day. The answer should have been: Yes, it will affect property prices and create more noise as well as many safety issues.

Councillor Michelle Heagey said in the Independent that early indications were promising, with excellent compliance among truck drivers. City services manager Gary Van Driel said trucks were using Ryrie St, not McKillop St and Latrobe Tce. We now have 2000 trucks a day in Ryrie St, supposedly an excellent result. Do they think the residents of Ryrie St are stupid?

Ryrie St is dying before our eyes. So many businesses are getting out or have closed and others are just hanging on.

The trial is a stupid answer to a problem that should have been sorted years ago.

It is not good enough for City of Greater Geelong to trial Band-Aid solutions to appear to be doing something about east/west traffic flow. The problem will only get worse.

Ryrie and McKillop Sts are not the solution.

JUSTICE Crew might spur the next dance-move craze following the well-publicised Miley Cyrus twerking episode of last year.

Member John Pearce told the Independent the group was incorporating into its gigs some audience participation, teaching the group’s unique moves to fans.

“We’ve got to invent our own little twerk or style that gets people to try and copy it,” he said.

“We try to get people up on stage and play games with the crowd. We might have a screen with different dance moves, like twerking and crumping.

“In our latest shows we’ve had a little workshop then we get them to showcase their moves.”

But the six guys in the crew were a little careful about who they picked to join them on stage, with plenty of hysterical fans in the audience.

“It’s been pretty well-behaved but some people run up to their favourite and hug them and won’t let go,” Pearce laughed.

“When you see them waving their hands like crazy you’ve got to know not to choose them.”

Four years on from the group’s big victory on Australia’s Got Talent, Pearce said Justice Crew never expected to reach such heights.

LARA Sporting Club Bistro’s new great value daily specials cater for everyone from families and seniors to steak-lovers and gourmet aficionados.

General manager Andrew Terry says the club is proud to relaunch its bistro with a central theme of affordable, quality meals.

“This is a new launch of a diverse range of value offers that are coming out. There’s something for everyone, really,” he says.

Taste of Italy on Tuesdays offers for $19.90 a two-course Italian menu at both lunch and dinner time.

Free hearing aid test HEARING Aid Specialists Geelong has been a family-owned practice since 1991 but has operated on the same central city site in Yarra St since 1989.

Clever design work not only gives the latest Mercedes E250 cabriolet a stylish upmarket look, but also gives it an impressively low coefficient of drag of just 0.24. Inside, the latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class cabriolet was the subject of a revamp for the 2014 model year. While it retains the same overall design theme detail changes to the colours and finish of the materials work well.

The four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine in the E 250 produces 155 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque. This powerplant has plenty of urge and is likely to meet the needs of almost all owners.

Revheads can opt for a twin-turbo V6 unit that puts out a hefty 245 kilowatts. It will set you back $142,900. Sensible souls can save money by buying the E200 for the relatively bargain price of $88,900.

These mid-sized Mercedes have many crash avoidance items designed for the much more expensive S-Class. The car scans of all potential dangers for 360 degrees around the car; lane keeping; radar cruise control; automatic braking and pedestrian collision protection.

If you should still be caught up in a serious collision the big convertible will do its very best to minimise injuries. Naturally it has a five-star crash test rating. Even in winter you can still enjoy motoring with the top down thanks to the heated seats and the, optional, Airscarf. The latter blows heated air onto your shoulders and we know from experience it makes a surprising difference.

A clever device called an Aircap rises from the top edge of the windscreen and lifts the airflow over the top of the open cabin by about 10cm, making a surprising difference by minimising air currents inside.

Ride comfort is very good and there is no real sign of body shake on anything other than very rough roads. Tyre noise doesn’t intrude to any real extent and the open-top Merc handles the notorious coarse-chip Australian road surfaces better than many other European cars.

We did bottom out the suspension when pushing hard over big undulations, but you have to keep in mind these are low slung sports models and have to be treated with care on Aussie backroads.

There’s better than average space in the rear seat of this cabriolet and a family unit of mum, dad and a pair of pre-teen children in the back works reasonable well. The boot is on the small side for a car of this overall size, but pretty good for the convertible class. It can be increased in volume when the roof is up by moving the roof-stowage compartment up and out of the way.

Handling is excellent due to the low centre of gravity and balance offered by the front-engine reardrive layout and by the dynamic precision built into these German machines.

We’ve never liked the floor operated parking brakes on Mercedes models. Primarily because we prefer the added safety of left-foot braking, and having to juggle feet to get the car up and running is a pain.

CATS coach Chris Scott hopes Saturday night’s clash with the table-topping Eagles will reveal a bit more about where his team sits in the overall scheme of things.

While exhibiting some cautious optimism about Geelong’s undefeated record so far, he remains unconvinced it means a top-four finish at season’s end.

“I’m of the view most years, and I don’t think this year will be any different, that it takes at least 10 games, probably more, till everyone has played each other once, to get a really good handle on where everyone sits,” Scott reflected this week.

“The teams that have played Hawthorn and Fremantle already probably are going pretty well even though they may have lost to those clubs.

“We had a good win on the weekend. We’re playing well enough to win the games we’ve played.

“But we have a pretty good idea of where we want to be and the type of footy we want to play and, relative to that, we’re a little bit off.”

But Scott did believe that West Coast was a potential top-four side.

“Their pre-season form was outstanding. They’ve changed the way they play a little bit, which always happens with a new coach.

“I think everyone’s been aware for a long time they have some great personnel. They probably haven’t had it on the field as often as they would have liked.

“But their strengths are very hard to combat.

They’ve got some unique players in the competition.”

“Their form has been outstanding and we would have thought they’re one of those teams contending for that top-four position.”

Home-ground advantage might help Geelong’s cause somewhat, Scott suggested.

“They haven’t played down at Simonds Stadium for a while, so that’s going to be a little bit different for them.”

Scott also flagged going head-to-head with the Eagles, contending that Geelong had the personnel to “pit our strengths against theirs”.

“There’s a bit more flexibility in their team, no question of that,” he said.

The Warriors’ early possession and forward pressure last weekend helped rising forward Nicholas Jurcic score his first goal of the campaign when the Eagles turned over the ball in their box, leaving him with an easy close-range shot.

The home side then began finding its feet until the Warriors’ Mark Paleka drove a low, hard

ball past the keeper to double the lead.

The Eagles made quick changes to get back in the game, with Vojislav Milojevic placing a shot past Frano Saric for the home side’s first goal.

But sub Jackson Davis put the result beyond doubt for the Warriors with a thumping shot from 25m that left the Eagles’ keeper without any chance.

ANGLERS had luck fishing sheltered waters to escape the wind last weekend.

Chris Pitman and Daniel Baden fished high up the Barwon River estuary where their fresh squid baits caught four elephant fish.

Grant Forbes also caught elephants in the estuary but from the landing beside Ocean Grove’s boat ramp well-after dark.

Surf anglers battled but still landed salmon. Paul Ellis spun the rocks past Lorne early Monday, landing a dozen over 1.5kg.

Swan Bay rewarded Guy Faithful with whiting, salmon, mullet, trevally and flathead.

Squid remained viable option on the grass beds from Queenscliff to Hermsley. Small jigs in the more-natural colourations were best.

The Harrison boys fished off Portsea for gummy sharks, catching six but keeping only one, a 14.6kg specimen that took a trevally fillet.

Queenscliff’s cut produced trevally to 1.5kg. Soft plastics worked well an hour either side of low tide.

Charter operators caught kingfish, with the biggest fish taken on live baits and jigging accounting for fish mostly under 4kg.

Ample bait in the bays attracted plenty of salmon, with fish nudging 2kg caught. The area between Avalon Beach and Point Wilson along with Leopold to Point Henry were the most reliable, with casting or trolling lures working best.

Troy Martin drifted the spoil grounds off Hermsely and Leopold, boating reasonable numbers of flathead and snapper on soft plastics. Two of his snapper were around 1.5kg and pike were stalking the area, too.

Pike were also taken from the rocks at North Shore. Freshwater captures were widespread.

Mark Phillips and son Michael fished Powerbait from the shore at lake Bullen Merri where they caught and released small trout and salmon. Orange was the best colour Powerbait.

Newlyn Reservoir again rewarded fly anglers with trout over 2kg. Late evening and after dark was best, especially in calm conditions and when using mudeye patterns.

The Barwon River in Geelong continued producing redfin upstream from Buckley Falls. Lure and live minnow accounted for most fish, although Tommy Peters grassed two 900g reddies on shrimp.

The Minister for Environment and Climate Change is seeking expressions of interest for 4 skills-based positions on each of the following waste and resource recovery group boards: • Barwon South West • Grampians Central West • Gippsland • Loddon Mallee • Goulburn Valley • North East Board members are expected to commence in August 2014.

The new waste and resource recovery groups will be established under the Environment Protection Act 1970. All boards will be responsible for waste and resource recovery infrastructure planning, and have a facilitative role in procurement of waste management facilities and waste and resource recovery services, delivery of education programs and waste and resource recovery projects.
