Variable rates proving popular A stable interest rate had lead to an increase in the popularity of variable rates, according to the latest home loan approval figures from Mortgage Choice. The new data found variable rates account for over 76 per cent of all home loans written in March, up from 73.92 per cent from the month prior. Mortgage Choice spokesperson Jessica Darnbrough said the lift in demand for variable rate products wasn’t surprising given the recent period of stability in interest rates. “In the April board meeting, the Reserve Bank suggested the most prudent course of action for the Australian economy was a prolonged period of interest rate stability,” she said. “With the Reserve Bank indicating that rates could stay on hold for the foreseeable future, borrowers are understandably becoming increasingly comfortable taking out a variable rate mortgage.” In a statement, Reserve Bank Australia (RBA) Governor Glenn Stevens said the Board decided to leave the cash rate unchanged at 2.5 per cent, for the eighth month in a row. Mr Stevens said ideal financial conditions and low interest rates remain despite the Australian economy growing at a below trend pace and an expectation of “subdued” public spending. For the housing market, Mr Stevens said recent information suggests a “slightly firmer consumer demand” foreshadows a solid expansion in housing construction, despite a significant increase in dwelling prices over the past year.
