Mount Dandenong’s Sky High will be hosting children’s weeks from 7 to 20 April where many funfilled activities will be available for kids of all ages.

Over the two weeks, activities will include a jumping castle, face painting, minigolf, pony rides, mini Formula One racing cars, and the exciting annual Easter egg hunt.

Belgrave carnival fund-raiser

By REBECCA BILLS FROM the idea of an Easter egg hunt for children from around the hills, a full blown Good Friday Carnival in Belgrave has evolved.

This year, Belgrave will play host to the inaugural Belgrave Carnival in support of the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Event organiser, vice-president of the Belgrave Traders Association and Hugs for Kids owner Bek Milikins said she noticed the lack of Easter activities around the hills and wanted to change that.

“The number one reason for organising the event is last Easter Belgrave was really, really busy but there was nothing for the kids to do,” she said.

“Being the owner of the town’s kids’ shop and a mum of

two, I thought I was the perfect person to do this.

“There is the Werribee Park Cadbury Easter Egg hunt, but it seemed crazy to me to have to travel so far.”

Ms Milikins said her aim for the event was to keep costs to a minimum so that as much money as possible could be donated to the Good Friday Appeal.

“Each year, the Good Friday Appeal brings together people from all parts of all the community to raise much-needed funds for equipment, research and education to support the work of the Royal Children’s Hospital,” she said.

“We hope this will be the first year of many Belgrave carnivals as we want to show everyone the size of the community spirit that lives in the hills while supporting a cause that has touched so many of us personally.

Ms Milikins said the carnival would feature an amazing array of rides, food stalls, animal displays, face-paintings, music and of course an Easter egg hunt.

“We are still confirming if the real Easter Bunny will be making an appearance,” she said.

The carnival will be held between 10am and 2pm on Good Friday 18 April at St Thomas More Primary School, Reynolds Lane, Belgrave.

All proceeds from the day will be donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

“There’s really been no pressure,” he said.

“Protesters have the right to an opinion, and I respect that absolutely. They’ve committed to doing it (protesting the store) peacefully and lawfully, and, as long as they continue to do that, then I don’t have an issue with it.”

THE controversial Tecoma McDonald’s opened its doors to the public yesterday, with protesters vowing to stay at the site until the restaurant is gone.

Scores of protesters and supporters of the restaurant had gathered in front of the store at around 6am for the opening, which came at 11am on Monday 7 April.

The first people through the door were Cheyenne Holtham and Jake Pancutt, who both ordered Quarter Pounder burgers with extra meat and cheese.

Within minutes, the store was thriving with eager patrons, and lines to get into the store stretched along the footpath.

Meanwhile, placards, songs and displays against the restaurant – including one across a horse float – filled the sides of Burwood Highway, with around 50 protesters assembling.

About 20 police officers from around the Yarra Ranges helped to control the crowds, and Detective Inspector Matthew Anderson said police were not biased towards either side of the debate.

“We don’t want to see any accidents occurring,” Insp Anderson said.

“We will maintain a presence, and that’s only because where you see people are positioned, but also just to make sure there are no breaches to the peace.

“We are impartial and we’re here for both sides.”

He said that police officers would maintain a presence at the restaurant for the time being, with protesters vowing to be at the site each and every day.

“We’ll do this tomorrow morning and the next morning, and the next morning, and the next morning, until they go away!” said a megaphonewielding protester.

Mr Muratore said that the campaign against the restaurant, which included a petition with over 100,000 signatures and an international trip to McDonald’s headquarters, had all put pressure on Mr Currie.

The new restaurant features aspects from the local environment, including a large photograph of the Puffing Billy Bridge adorning one wall, and a photograph of local trees on another.

‘Brave’ workers face a grilling STAFF member at the new restaurant, 18-year-old Callan Boyd, said he was excited to work at Tecoma McDonald’s, and had been hailed as “brave” by those he told.

“Everyone said ‘well done, you must be so brave for working there’,

but I’m not brave – it’s just a job,” he said. Mr Boyd, an Upwey resident, said he believed the protest would “die off eventually”.

Tecoma McDonald’s will be open from 6am-11pm from Sunday-Thursday, and open 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays.

Education pioneer OBITUARY MISS Annie Beatrice (Bea) Boardman, a former principal of Dandenong Girls High School during the 1960s, passed away recently having reached the age of 104.

A funeral service was held for Bea Boardman at Le Pine Chapel in Dandenong and was attended by family, friends and former students, including a number from Dandenong Girls High School.

This school in earlier days was located in Cleeland Street, Dandenong, and later became known as Cleeland High School.

For many years from the 1930s onwards Bea’s family had a weekender house at One Tree Hill, Ferny Creek.

Over a 30 to 40 year period from the 1960s onwards Bea lived at Sassafras where she built a house and established a large garden, and at Emerald where she did the same, and at Monbulk where she took on an existing house with large garden.

Miss Boardman was fondly remembered by a number of exstudents, some of whom spoke at her funeral service and she was seen to have made a significant contribution to young people’s lives throughout her teaching career.

Her influence has been described as inspirational, helping shape many a career and scholarly pursuit and she enthusiastically passed on her many and varied interests to others, particularly her passion for music.

Miss Boardman also helped open up possibilities for women

Bea Boardman spent many years in the Dandenongs. to take on senior roles within education at a time when this was quite uncommon and resisted by many.

She was known as an independent thinker and a pioneer in more ways than one.

One example fondly remembered was her innovative use, way back in the 1960s, of a small electric car to help navigate the long corridors of the Dandenong school, sometimes with the odd staff member or pupil hitching a ride on the back.

This unique vehicle, along with its driver, was once featured on the front page of the Melbourne Herald evening newspaper.

Her teaching career spanned

many decades at secondary schools right around Victoria including Rochester High, MacRobertson Girls, Warrnambool, Leongatha, Seymour, Nunawading, Flemington and Williamstown High.

At several of these she was senior headmistress.

To many of her friends she was known as Bea and she was born to parents Arthur Reginald and Florence Maude in Armadale, Victoria on 1 October 1909.

She grew up with her younger sister Mabel in Prahran, attended Hawksburn Primary and University High Schools, and completed a master of arts and bachelor of education at the University of Melbourne.

Along the way Bea played hockey for Uni High, represented Victoria, and achieved an Australian Hockey Blue while playing for Melbourne University.

Bea was also an accomplished cellist and played in a number of local groups and orchestras both in and around Dandenong and the nearby hills.

She taught the cello and accompanied many other musicians on the piano.

She also had a keen interest in the Dandenong Festival of Music and Art. For most of her retirement years Bea lived in the Dandenong Ranges for which she had a love and she also had a passion for gardening and travel.

She lived independently well into her nineties and spent some of her later happy years among friends at Fiddlers Green Retirement Village in Berwick.

From bookkeeper to boss OBITUARY AFTER a short illness, local identity Joy Gilmour passed away on 24 February 2014, aged 90. Born in Tasmania in 1923, the only child of Dick and Ivy Clarke, she had lived at Upper Ferntree Gully and Upwey for 72 years.

Joy came to the mainland seeking work and found it in the office of Thomas Hayes, proprietor of the Upper Ferntree Gully Timber and Hardware.

Tom also had a timber mill at Gembrook, employing a large number of men and needed a capable bookkeeper for both businesses.

She also got herself a husband when she married the boss!

They were married at St Johns, Ferntree Gully, and soon became proud parents of three boys, John, Roderick and Trevor.

Sadly, Tom contracted tuberculosis and died at the age of 44 after being married for only nine years.

Joy proved to be a very capable woman after Tom’s death and was able to continue running the large business even though she was a young widow with three small children to care for. With many workmen who were depending on their jobs she was faced with a daunting task but she maintained the business until her sons eventually took over.

Joy remarried to local nurseryman Gordon Gilmour who became an instant family man and a wonderful husband.

Joy Gilmour and her husband Gordon. respected him and a daughter, Deborah, was born, completing their family.

Not withstanding her business commitments, Joy pursued many of her own interests.

She was passionate about all sports, most keen on tennis and badminton, playing many years with Upper Ferntree Gully.

She was also a dedicated supporter of Upper Ferntree Gully Football Club where her sons played.

After living many years in Upwey, Joy and Gordon moved to Glengollan Village.

After being married for 54 years, Joy lost her husband Gordon in 2008.

With the love and support of her family, eight grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, and many friends she was helped through her sorrow and loss.

A trip to France with son Trevor was a recent happy and memorable time, especially climbing the Eiffel Tower with granddaughter Kelly who resides in France.

She continued driving,

visiting family and friends, and being involved with local community. After a fall which broke her hip she gave up driving at 89 years old.

But that didn’t stop her getting out and about with son Trevor pushing her wheelchair all around the town, stopping to chat to the locals and keeping up with events.

She loved her life and she loved people, never forgetting names, interested in everyone and everything.

Because she had married into two local pioneer families, the Hayes from Belgrave/ Ferntree Gully and the Gilmours from Belgrave/Kallista she knew many local families, their history and marriage connections.

She was a great help, untangling who was who, especially for those tracing their family history. She was a stickler for accuracy and was always respectful for the privacy of others.

Joy Gilmour will be remembered with great respect and affection by the many who had the pleasure to know her.

EDUCATION in the Yarra Ranges has been pushed into the spotlight for the upcoming State Election, with Labor announcing it will revive Swinburne’s former Lilydale campus if elected.

However, the Coalition has dismissed the announcement as a “stunt” and accused the opposition of interfering with the plans to sell the campus.

On Tuesday 1 April Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews visited the former campus, where a group of residents, former students and campaigners had gathered.

Mr Andrews told the group that the campus would be guaranteed to reopen as a higher education and TAFE facility if the party was elected in November.

Mr Andrews was joined by Evelyn candidate Peter Harris and Monbulk MP James Merlino and said the ALP would do “all in its power” to reopen the site.

He said this included compulsorily acquiring the campus if it was sold off before the election.

“I give fair warning to anyone thinking of buying these buildings they are not for sale,” he said.

“It is important that it is given the opportunity to run its course without any type of interference - it’s a shame the opposition hasn’t respected the process.”

Ms Fyffe said that, as a result of the ALP announcement, there was a risk that property speculators could take up the site, knowing that Labor would have to buy it back as an election commitment.

“The campus officially ceased as an education provider in mid-2013 after it was announced in late 2012 that Swinburne would be closing the site.

The debate that humans should be running without shoes has been around for a while now.

The basic premise is that without shoes we naturally run on our toes and forefeet and that this has a much more cushioning impact than running heel-toe as we tend to do when wearing running shoes.

And this is almost certainly right - when running without shoes runners do instinctively avoid heel contact which is nature’s way of avoiding injury to our all important heels by landing on jagged surfaces etc.

Shoes have definitely made us lazy to some degree.

Some experts think that running shoes are the cause of many injuries due to how they change running style.

And for some runners they’re right.

For most, however, it’s not that simple.

OK, let’s just say that you are a semi-elite athlete or at least like to go out for a jog three to four times a week.

If you wanted to learn to run barefoot you would need eight to 12 weeks of following a rigorous and careful training regime.

The end result?

You might actually run faster and even reduce your injury rate.

Sounds great doesn’t it?

If, however, you jog only to train or keep fit for

a sport which requires shoes or footwear (football, soccer or any court sport), then forget it. You will waste time training muscles in a fashion that may actually hinder your main sport.

Another scenario, let’s say that you live in the hills (like me) and you run infrequently (like me).

It would take you at least 15-20 runs over a six-week period to generate enough spring from barefoot running and you probably wouldn’t be able to run half as far as you normally would.

The other thing to consider is whether there is actually anywhere in the hills that you could run barefoot for any distance.

With all the gravel tracks and dirt roads (not to mention the possum poo and the cold!), it is hardly an attractive proposition - at the best of times, these tracks can be hazardous when wearing hiking boots, not to mention tearing along in bare feet!

To negate this, some proponents of barefoot running wear these ‘barely there’ shoes which actually cost the same as normal running shoes kind of defeats the purpose, if you ask me.

Interestingly, I have treated three clients in the past year all with torn calf muscles or Achilles injuries from the springing force required in barefoot running - each was a male in the 35-50 age bracket and a ‘social’ runner.

And the predisposing factor with each of them was heavily pronating feet (rolling in) and poor calf strength.

Each injury was likely a build up of tightness in the calf and lower leg from years of bio mechanical stress due to feet over-pronation, so as soon as they tried to change their running style - bang!

The moral of the story is - if you want to run barefoot, make sure you’ve got the time to train for it (allow three to five sessions of 20-40 minutes a week over at least eight weeks) and sort out any strengthening issues you may have in your calves and lower leg muscles first.

If you are not sure, then you know who to call to assess this!

And if there are any barefoot runners out there, I’d love to hear your story.

By REBECCA BILLS TECOMA residents will be “poppin’ tags” when the new Salvation Army Thrift Shop opens its doors later this month.

PWP Op-Shop manager Dawn Boyce welcomed the new store which is located above her shop and said she felt the Salvos store would be a positive addition to Tecoma.

“We think that shoppers who don’t find what they want upstairs will come down to our store and vice versa,” she said.

“We have very loyal customers who have assured us that they will continue to shop here, but we really are excited at and hopeful that the new store will bring more people here.

“People love to rummage in this store as it is a real, genuine opshop.”

Salvos Stores marketing coordinator Aife O’Loughlin said the opening store has had a positive re-

sponse from the local community and the Tecoma Traders Association had cited that they were also happy with the new addition.

“Salvos Stores have been interested in opening a retail unit in the Tecoma area for quite some time and due to the location and size of our new store site, we decided this would be the perfect location for the store,” he said.

“The location of the PWP OpShop was only seen to be a positive to the retail space.

“Salvos Stores hope that the township of Tecoma will continue to experience growth and that our presence will act as a contributing factor.”

Mr O’Loughlin said many consumers who enjoyed shopping at recycle retailers often liked to visit more than one recycled retailer in one trip.

“Our proximity to the PWP OpShop will prove a convenience in

assisting this functionality and will provide a more valuable and enjoyable experience for these consumers,” he said.

“Salvos Stores are very much looking forward to opening on 26 April and hope that our store becomes a firm favourite with the local community,” he said.

Tecoma Traders Association president and owner of Piccaninny Pre Loved Kids Clothing Karen Rook said they really wanted to capitalise on the Macklemore hit song ‘Thrift Shop’ to bring thrift shoppers to the area.

“Come up to Tecoma and see what you can get - even if you do only have $20 in your pocket,” she said.

“We are also working with council to organise streetscape works so hopefully in 12 months’ time you won’t recognise the place.”

“It will look fabulous, we are saying ‘bring it on’.”

RSL gifts iPads, rugs But the club also assists members of the greater community in cases of genuine hardship or need.

The Fernlea House palliative care facility recently tried to fund-raise to buy a couple of iPads but was unable to scramble together enough money.

So, late last month Ms Leeman visited Fernlea to present the iPads, and rugs - donated by Mary Paxton - to CEO Sharyn Turney,

her staff, and Fernlea’s guests.

Fernlea House was established by the local community to address an identified local need of providing respite for people dealing with a lifelimiting illness. Guests are cared for by trained staff and volunteers in a home-like environment on a third of an acre Emerald Monbulk Road block.

A FEMALE platypus in Lilydale, 10 years after she was first discovered, was a key highlight of the spring platypus survey of the Yarra River catchment.

The Melbourne Water Urban Platypus Program, now in its 19th year, helps determine the status of platypus populations across greater Melbourne.

The recently released findings help Melbourne water prioritise river health investment.

Waterways manager (North-east region) John Woodland said the survey results showed platypus numbers had remained stable in the rivers and creeks within the Yarra catchment.

Captures were recorded at Olinda Creek (2), Mullum Mullum Creek (5), Warburton (2), McMahons Creek (3) and Eltham (1).

Mr Woodland said the survey also highlighted the challenges in tracking the animal, and the public could help increase understanding of platypus populations by registering sightings at platypusSPOT. org.

“We’ve surveyed Lilydale for many years, and the female we captured in the latest survey had managed to elude us for 10 years,” Mr Woodland said.

“This shows how shy platypus are, but it’s also a good sign that we are managing the habitat well. We encourage people to register sightings at the platypus website to help build on existing knowledge.”

Mr Woodland said the positive results across Melbourne were tempered by two cases of platypus found entangled in litter.

“Fortunately, we were able to rescue the two platypus, but it is concerning to see incidents where this iconic animal is trapped in litter,” he said.

“People need to be mindful that litter washes into waterways and can undo a lot of the good work we do alongside the community and local and State Government,” he added.

Ecological research organisation Cesar conducts the program on behalf of Melbourne Water.

Cesar wildlife ecologist Josh Griffiths said platypus were vital indicators of river health.

Rights at centre of care

WITH regards to Clause 4.1 of Order 1/2013: 1. What are council’s recommendations for changing established behaviour and territories of existing cats without causing stress to the animals who may have difficulties understanding the order. I have explained the order to a cat and, although he assured me he would respect it, I don’t think he was serious. Typical teenager.

I’d put it down to hormones, but council rightly put the chop to those early on.

2. In cases where confining a cat within a dwelling on the property would be unduly stressful to the cat and certainly result in injury to the owner, does council recommend erecting physical barriers around the entire property? Would three metre high fences be sufficient or should I consider four metres?

Or would a water moat around the property be more appropriate? Will council be fast-tracking building permits for these constructions and would they comply with the BMO now being inflicted on residents.

If my neighbours own cats, are they required to share the costs? The neighbours I mean, not their cats.

3. If my cat is within an existing relationship with another cat on a different property can it apply for special dispensation? Does council recognise same-sex relationships in this context?

I am not implying anything about the cat’s sexuality, but I respect his right to choose.

4. In what alternative reality did council think such an order on cats would be: a) Realistically enforceable on pre-existing cats; b) Unlikely to upset cat owners, let alone the cats; c) Not seen by the majority of residents as a bone-head decision, regardless of how well intentioned and with only support from 134 in a Shire of 140,000; d) How is an elderly pensioner with only a cat for a companion supposed to afford the $1000 for an electronic confinement system?

Council has not thought this through rationally and has now become a laughing stock.

LAST week an historic reform took place in the Victorian Parliament that will change the way we treat mental health patients in our state.

The new Mental Health Act will for the first time put the human rights of patients at the centre of care and treatment.

Our society has come such a long way from the era of institutionalisation, where those suffering a mental illness were locked away and treatment was forced upon them without consent.

However, until last week our legislation has not.

Our previous 30-year-old Act was the oldest mental health legislation in our country.

It denied patients the right of decision regarding their treatment.

This was in conflict with international human rights law and standards, and in many cases prolonged recovery and caused more pain.

The new Act gives rights back to mental health sufferers.

It aims to empower the patient and their family or support network to decide on factors regarding their treatment, under recommendations from their doctors.

I understand, as many who have known someone suffering a mental illness would, that a person’s capacity to make decisions may fluctuate.

But they deserve the right to be given every opportunity to be involved in the decision-making process.

The legislation will allow patients to have their wishes heard and when they struggle to make decisions, will give them and their family every support they need to make a well-informed decision.

There are tough new restrictions on compulsory treatment to ensure it is absolutely necessary before proceeding.

There are also new safeguards to protect patients, which include an independent tribunal, a Mental Health Complaints Commissioner, supported decision-making and advance statements setting out preferred treatment in the event of a future illness.

Mental illness is one of the most common health issues we face.

With about one million adults suffering depression and more than two million anxiety, most of us have either experienced mental ill-

Gateway to success I’D like to congratulate the Lilydale Junior Football Club for organising the Lilydale Community Festival which was held on Saturday 29 March 2014.

The festival was the first of its kind for the Gateway Community and proved to be an outstanding success, with a steady flow of people attending throughout the event from 9.30am to 5pm.

The community atmosphere was amazing and there was a range of different people attending - students, families, seniors, people walking their dogs.

Everyone who attended enjoyed themselves and appreciated the opportunity to socialise with their community in a festival atmosphere.

It was great to see the many local businesses that got involved as well as local community services.

The live entertainment also added to the atmosphere as people meandered through the street stalls and children enjoyed the face painting and jumping castle carnival rides as well as the miniature pony rides.

I’m sure everyone who attended would agree that the community festival was a fantastic event.

Congratulations again to the organising committee for all of your efforts.

The cats will play A VERY wise decision by Yarra Ranges Shire Council to introduce a cat curfew.

We have lived in the Dandenongs for nearly 20 years now and in that time have seen an increase in the number of cats allowed to roam free both day and night.

We moved here for the trees and wildlife and were disappointed to see domestic animals killing our wildlife.

Many times we have found the remains of dead birds and other wildlife.

I am aware that this carnage is not necessarily caused by cats but a certain percentage is.

Our sensor lights are frequently tripped by cats allowed to roam at night so this is a welcome decision.

Now, cat owners might boo hoo my comments but we have had two cats since we moved to the hills and they have never been allowed to roam, mainly due to our wise decision to install (at quite some expense, I might add) a comprehensive cat playground.

This allowed our two cats the freedom to go out and in at their leisure but at the same time prevented them from becoming a nuisance to our neighbours and, more importantly, protected both of them and the wildlife from each other.

The cats enjoyed this life for 18 years without any detrimental effect to either them or the wildlife.

There is an alternative for cat owners if they only do some research which will allow their cats the freedom of being outside without the problem of destroying the wildlife.

Google “cat playground” if you need more information.

They can be as expensive or as cheap as you want them to be.

We did not regret our decision to install one and neither did the cats.

STUDENTS at Belgrave South Primary School have created artwork based on the Janeen Brian and Cheryll Johns’s book Silly Galah.

In a collaborative project, students in Grades Prep to Grade 5 contributed to the art assignment during art classes last year to create a permanent art display at the school.

Belgrave South Primary School art teacher and project co-ordinator Christine Bernhardt said the children in Grades 1 and 2 were studying the topic Australian Animals which prompted the assignment.

“Children worked on a range of skills that involved threads and textiles including sewing and using running stitch and blanket stitch,” she said.

Ms Bernhardt said the students also learnt skills such as cutting and fringing fabrics, painting fabric, pattern making, weaving and knotting.

Photos recall 55th

By REBECCA BILLS TO COMMEMORATE the centenary of the 55th Australian Infantry Battalion (Collingwood Regiment), the Mount Evelyn RSL is putting a framed collage of photos on display.

The frame, filled with centuryold pictures, is a pictorial record of the event that took place on 19 April 1914 and shows citizen militia soldiers being presented with regimental and King’s colours at Victoria Park in Collingwood.

Mount Evelyn RSL secretary Anthony McAleer said the item has been in the Mount Evelyn RSL’s collection for many years and as the centenary of the event is coming up in the next few weeks, the membership wanted to put the frame on public display.

to Lilydale to inspect troops of the 13th Infantry Brigade under the command of Colonel John Monash who

were camped where the Lillydale Lake is today,” he said.

“Also present at the Collingwood event was the Governor Sir Arthur Stanley, the Archbishop of Melbourne and a number of officers from the Australian Defence Force.

“There are quite a number of photos in the frame that detail what happened on the day.

The Mount Evelyn Community Bank will be displaying the collage until after Anzac Day. Branch manager Leanne Vaytauer said the bank is honoured to have been asked by the RSL to house the piece while it is on display to the public.

“They believed this was the best spot to have it on display as everybody knows where we are,” she said.

“It is a wonderful collage and just fantastic to look at.”

Grant aims at weapons display

By REBECCA BILLS THE Upwey-Belgrave RSL subbranch will be installing security sensors and interpretive plaques at a display of deactivated rifles and swords thanks to a generous grant.

Last Thursday, La Trobe MP Jason Wood handed over $1599 to the Upwey-Belgrave RSL as part of the Australian Government initiative Saluting Their Service.

The grant aims to honour the sacrifice and service of Australian servicemen and women in wars, conflicts and peace operations and to promote appreciation and understanding of the role that those who served have played in shaping the nation.

Upwey-Belgrave RSL secretary Leigh Baker said the grant will enable the group to display the mounted firearms and swords that were donated by the HMAS Sydney, the Vietnam Logistics Support Veterans Association and another donor.

Tobacco sales stubbed COCKATOO’S General Store has been banned from selling tobacco products for three months from 27 March after staff were caught illegally selling cigarettes to a person aged under 18.

The decision was handed down at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 27 February, where the store’s owner was convicted, fined $800 and ordered to pay Cardinia Shire Council’s court costs.

The store has been caught selling cigarettes to minors on three separate occasions since 2003.

During a test purchase program conducted by the council in April 2013, store employees were caught the third time, leaving the council with no option but to pursue the matter.

Although the owner had left the dayto-day running of the store to a staff member at the time of the offence, she is still liable as business operators and managers are responsible for sales made by their employees.

The owner was unable to demonstrate that sufficient measures had been taken to prevent the sale, having no written records of compulsory bi-annual staff training having taken place.

The council monitors tobacco retailers with an ongoing test purchase program to ensure they comply with laws not to sell tobacco products to minors.

Retailers found to be breaking the law risk an on-the-spot fine of $577 and if found guilty in a magistrates’ court may face a ban on selling tobacco or a large fine.

The penalty is higher if the retailer is a corporation.

Residents concerned about retailers selling tobacco to people under 18 can contact the council’s Customer Service team on 1300 787 624 or the Tobacco Information Line on 1300 136 775.

Festive air for top citizens ANOTHER fabulous Funfest rests its weary head after a fantastic day with perfect weather on Sunday.

Organisers said there were so many people to thank for the event including all the volunteers, stallholders, sponsors, entertainers and artists.

Emerald’s Citizen of the Year was Karen Alexander.

Karen’s interest and involvement in the community over the past 20 or so years has focused not only on practical, on-ground environmental and land care outcomes, but also on government policies and funding issues and the need for collaboration across the landscape.

She is a strategic thinker able to see the big picture and what needs to be done, then very ably works with others to achieve the vision.

She has been one of the key drivers in helping set up a large number of community organisations e.g. Johns Hill Landcare Group, Southern Ranges Environment Alliance, and the Cardinia Environment Coalition, and has taken on leadership roles, especially

in the formative years, of many of the organisations she has inspired.

Emerald’s Young Citizen of the Year is Holly Latter.

Holly is an 18-year-old Emerald resident who has been extensively involved in her local community for most of her life.

She completed seven years in total with Emerald Cubs and Scouts, then moved to the Venturer Unit at Upper Beaconsfield while maintaining her Emerald Scout Group membership.

Holly has shown strong leadership skills both at secondary school as Community Service Captain (2013) and in the Venturer Unit where she was member of the Unit Council, filling the role of Chair for two years.

IT’S the sound of safety.

With their $10,000 community safety grant, the Dandenong Ranges Music Council has produced a CD to raise awareness and find a way to communicate an effective message about personal safety.

A collection of four original songs have been written and recorded by Carolyn Oates, with young people from Monbulk Primary School, Upwey High School and the Yarra Ranges Youth Services FReeZA group.

Singer Carolyn Oates said she met with each group four times, writing words around their chosen safety theme and eventually co-created the songs on CD. “There were common solutions across many of the issues raised including being aware of your surroundings and know how to describe the people to authorities, be mindful of the wellbeing of your friends and

dialling triple-zero is always a good thing,” Ms Oates said.

“It’s been a beautiful thing to see these ideas blossom and it’s always a surprise to find what lyric gems come from the workshops.”

Crime Prevention Minister Edward O’Donohue, who also attended the launch, said the project raised community awareness about some safety concerns for young people in the community.

“It gives a real insight into the way our young people think and how we, as a community, can help them feel comfortable and secure in their surroundings,” Mr O’Donohue said.

“Over the past three years, the Coalition has provided more than $2.8 million to fund 422 projects across the state through the Community Safety Fund.

“This includes more than $441,000 for 16 community crime prevention projects in the Yarra Ranges.”

Montrose says scram

By JARROD POTTER BRINGING its determination up from Division 2, Montrose rallied to knock off Noble Park in a 21-point come-from-behind victory.

Playing its first match in the Eastern Football League’s Division 1 competition since 1995, Montrose stormed back into the clash approaching half time before turning on the scramjets in the third term.

The Demons went monstrously well in front of goals in the third term as Billy Schilling and Rowan Hore kicked Montrose from deficit to advantage with three quick goals.

Seven goals to two in the third term, including a last-second snap from Demons crumber Sam Goodman, pushed the margin out to 13 at the final change.

Down by 31 at three-quartertime, new Noble Park coach Jon Knight told his players loudly and bluntly they had failed

through the term and wanted something positive to come from the last quarter.

Noble Park found four early goals in the last term before the Demons fought back and clinched the match through a Hore crumbing goal before Goodman kicked the lucky last goal in Montrose’s first win in Division 1.

Andrew Haining locked horns with Noble’s Glen Manson in an interesting ruck battle all afternoon, but Haining would claim victory as he gave first use to the likes of coach Brett Johnson and new recruit Andrew Walker through the centre.

Also starring for the Demons were Dean Stephen, Johnson and Brendan Gardoll.

Johnson said the rally in the third quarter came from sticking to their guns.

“Keep doing what we’re doing it was a bit of an arm wrestle and it was whoever was first to

break, really,” Johnson said.

“We just stuck to what we were doing and that was the important thing that I stressed at half time.

“Very proud of the boys’ efforts today - first time in Division 1 for 20 years and they did the club proud and it’s important that we continue to improve throughout the year.”

Montrose will head to Scoresby on Saturday for its second clash.

And, in an Under 18 game, young Olinda footballer Jake Swanson took a mark in the goal square with only seconds left. The siren sounded and young Swanson, similar to Waters slotted a goal to earn his team victory by four points over Woori Yallock.

FIRST DIVISION SENIORS Upwey Tecoma 11.12 (78) d Healesville 10.17 (77) Healesville has already made its presence felt in First Division as it almost pulled off a remarkable come-frombehind win.

However, it fell just one point short, thanks to a last gasp goal from Upwey after the siren.

This game started with Upwey looking the goods early as they got their lead out to 22 points at the main break.

Healesville played some really good footy in the third but

just could not narrow the gap as the lead stayed at 22 points going into the last quarter.

Upwey’s Dan Waters was a lone hand down forward as Healesville had no answers for him as he slotted eight majors for the day in a great performance. Healesville came hard in the last quarter, slamming on six goals to hit the lead with just minutes to go. Upwey, however, clinched the game with a goal after the siren to deny Healesville a fairy tail start back into First Division.

Belgrave 16.15 (111) d Emerald 4.5 (29) Belgrave has begun the 2014 season in great fashion with a resounding win over Emerald.

Belgrave looked the fitter and stronger side from the outset, and if not for inaccuracy in the first quarter it would have been a lot further in front than the 25-point margin.

Belgrave’s second term put this game to rest as they piled on nine goals-to-just-three behinds from a disappointing Emerald unit.

The second half was an even encounter with both teams adding six goals, but it was Belgrave’s first half that set the victory up and got Belgrave off to a winning start.

The third quarter was goalfor-goal and Monbulk maintained its seven-point advantage at the last break. The last quarter was a bit of a goal fest with 11 goals scored, Monbulk did have its chances to put the icing on the cake, but a scoreline of 16.20 suggests a few missed opportunities which kept Warby in the game.

With Muir in fine touch, booting eight for the match it was always a chance, however Monbulk was able to hold on to record a memorable four-point nail biting victory.

Olinda Ferny Creek 15.9 (99) d Woori Yallock 6.13 (49) Defending premiers Woori Yallock was given a rude shock

by Olinda as it went down by 50 points in a performance it would rather forget.

Olinda was in superb form from start to finish and it did not give Woori a look in as it extended its lead at every change and looked every bit a well-structured disciplined unit that is going to be hard to beat.

Woori did try hard in the second quarter to make a game of it, but Olinda held a 21-point lead at the half and looked every bit the winning side.

Olinda pretty much dominated the play in the second half, booting seven goals-tojust-two to kickstart its season with a great win.

So too was Dean Shannon(16) who strode in with a nett score of 67 to win comfortably over-all, as well as A Grade - giving him his second VGL medal this year.

Sepp Krummenacher (22) headed the B Grade board with 68 followed by Dave Jennings (20) on 69.

Krummenacher also headed the putting list with 29 putts.

There was a welcome return to the club for Travis Gerbes (9) when he came in with 71 as did Leigh

Morison (17). The Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pin on the fourth was won by Gerbes, Steve Town did the trick on the seventh, Morison on the 12th, Kevin Miller the 13th and Mike Litchfield continued his habit of late picking up the pro pin cash on the 18th.

It was a big week for Litchfield as on Wednesday on the 453-metre par fifth hole he scored an eagle. A driver, a fairway wood and a 10-foot putt - a rarity on this hole.

The ladies comp ended in a tame draw with Brianna McCoy and Petunia Jones hitting the tape together and the judges were not game to split them.

On Wednesday when the OFG hoard arrived they found it was a stableford competition so they could relax to be Overly Fatuous Golfers.

Brian McCoy (32) played a blinder and won the Henley Hill Winery bottle of quite delicious cabernet sauvignon when he came in with 46 stableford points.

Ian Scott (27) had 40, Mick Petrie (23) 39 as did Litchfield.

The OFG pennant team went down to Waverly to take on their locals and got the mother of all thrashings with none of the Emerald blokes drawing blood at all.

This week they greet Dorset at home on their own dung hill where

their fortunes should turn around.

The handicap pennant team took on Yarrambat at home and just managed to score a win. The winners were Mike Litchfield, Ken Sumsion, Broc Reynolds, Peter Stevens and Andrew Cutting while David Aitken, Peter Clowes and Ross Martin all lowered their colours.

Next week they head to Eastern Sward to try to win an away game.

Next Saturday the members settle into a round of two-man ambrose with a certain amount of bragging and swagger taking place after play last week with expectancies of some a little bloated.

Cross country runners out in force THE OPENING round of the Yarra Ranges Athletics cross country season was held at Morrison’s Reserve, Mount Evelyn last Saturday morning.

The big crowd of competitors turning out for the first round enjoyed a great new course and warm sunshine.

Distances of 500 metres, 1000m, 1500m, 2000m and 3000m were run with great fields in all races and wide range of ages in each field.

Highlights of the day were the outstanding efforts from debut parents Kate van Duuren, Katie Clarke and Kathi Hewitson.

Thrown in for active life CHILDREN around the hills have taken part in the Australian Government’s Active Afterschool Communities (AASC) program to try a range of free sports.

The program allows children the opportunity to try a wide range of sports and other structured physical activities through a positive and fun experience.

Last Thursday, as part of the seven week AASC program, a special training session for 35 Yarra Glen Primary School students was held at Lilydale Judo Club to get a taste of the sport.

Judo Victoria development officer Robyne Dawson said former state coach and Australian Judo representative Michelle Matthews coached the session.

Yarra Ranges AASC regional co-ordinator Kellie McPherson said the program aims to encourage children to develop a love of sport that motivates them to join a local sporting club or school sporting team and get them and their families active for life.

On Sunday, the club hosted the Lillydale Lake Fun Run.

Challenging courses over two kilometres, 5km and 10km was enjoyed by all competitors.

Juniors sign up in droves at football registration day

By REBECCA BILLS FOR the first time ever, Monbulk Junior Football Club has experienced registration day sign-up numbers the highest ever at this stage of pre-season.

The registration day in February resulted in the club’s combined efforts with Auskick reaching 125 children joining on the day.

Recently elected Junior Club President, Ken Beecroft said he was delighted with the strong showing and attributed it to the strong culture continuing to thrive at the club.

“The family day atmosphere is more evidence of the importance of the whole family enjoying their involvement here at the club,” Mr Beecroft said.

Both Mr Beecroft and Auskick Co-ordinator Mark Mannens stressed that it is never too late to join and more players can sign up on the very first Saturday morning of play.

The 2014 Auskick season starts on Saturday 26 April at 8.30am at the Monbulk Football Grounds.
