A MAJOR rain event unfolded across southern Queensland and northern NSW bringing valuable rain to the Granite Belt late last week.

Storm chaser and local weather expert Terry West said 86mm fell on Warwick on Thursday with some areas receiving upwards of 130mm.

“It is what the country needed and I think there would be some happy farmers out there this week,” he said.

Further widespread rain developed on Sunday.

Some area’s north of Warwick experienced flash flooding and some powerlines were down towards Pittsworth. A total of 18.8mm was recorded in Warwick and other areas received well over 50mm.

Scrooge lives APPARENTLY it is “own up” time for councils to shout their coin or lack of same, for the ratepayers to begin their Mr Scrooge Act, in preparation for the annual caterwaul upon receipt of SDRC rates notices!

They have, right on time read water meters, and that will be their caveat leading into what was noticed on television on 18 March 2014, the Big Show!

For although it was down the list and lights were dimmed, clearly the Southern Downs Regional Council shared the bad fortunes of several other councils, led by the Gold Coast Council, as dead broke!

Why has council attempted to find $15 million to bring a pipeline to Allora when finances were so depleted? What other favours have led to such a parlous state? Even the chickens with their hatchery went into a wait and see (WDN 25 February 2014) suspended pattern. Ratepayers, a maelstrom awaits!

Oh, what a show WHAT a contrast to 2013. This year we had a very successful show with many entries, fierce competition, happy patrons and a lot of fun but none of that happens without your support.

A light shower on Friday night did not deter the interest in Noah’s Farm Racing Pigs which followed the Jackpot Rodeo. Saturday saw keen competition among the showjumpers and other horse competitors and, for the first time, Killarney staged heavy horse classes.

Competitors from Toowoomba and Warwick displayed their best and promised to return with more participants next year.

The show kicked off in the usual manner with the Working Cattle Dog Trials and the local horse competition on Friday and Saturday night saw the ever-popular bash-up derby with cars from Toowoomba and Brisbane involved. A keenly contested team penning competition on Sunday morning rounded out a busy weekend.

The annual show for any community is an important date on the calendar and gives us the opportunity to display our best efforts in competition and catch up with friends, new and old.

It also presents an opportunity for the younger members of the community to enjoy the “fun of the fair” but without the physical and financial backing provided by you, our sponsors and volunteers, it would be impossible to conduct this important event.

WITH the Southern Downs Shire heading towards the creation of wards; now is the time to think what this can mean to electors. It is a chance for electors to grab control over their councillors.

The councillors now become only answerable to the electors of only one ward, and more control can be exerted over them. So if the majority of a ward formally or informally directs their representative to follow a certain direction; and if they don’t you get rid of them at the next elections.

Under the current system most councillors are voted in from towns where the majority of people live. Their little loyalty is to those more populated areas. I live in the Tenterfield Shire where our two ward councillors have gone against local views and opted to put up our rates by 84 per cent over seven years. They with luck will be pushed out at the next elections. There is a corruption side issue to large wards; that is the risk of gangster control; and believe me it happens.

Snake bite rescue RACQ CareFlight Rescue flew to the aid of a man who was bitten by a snake at a property in Tummaville on Tuesday.

The man, aged in his forties, was bitten on his leg some time before 3pm on Tuesday.

The RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter flew to the property where its flight doctor and paramedic treated the man, who was showing signs of envenomation.

He was airlifted to Toowoomba Base Hospital in a stable condition.

At Glen Innes there will be two worksites over consecutive nights on 4 and 5 April.

A 270-metre section at the New England Highway-Grafton Street intersection will be resurfaced, closing Grafton Street between the highway and Hunter Street. Detours will be in place along Grey Street for through traffic and along Hunter Street for local traffic.

And 80 metres of road at the roundabout where the New England and Gwydir highways meet, will be resurfaced, closing Meade Street (the Gwydir) between the New England Highway and Clarke Street. A detour will be in place for all traffic along Clarke and Bourke Streets.

Riders ready to rip, roar

By TANIA PHILLIPS RIDERS came out in force for the annual Killarney and Border Districts Trail Ride at the weekend.

More than 1500 competitors took part in this year’s event including 1303 in the open class, 210 in the Novice and 37 Peewees. The event is one of the premier events on the trail ride calendar.

Hosted by the Killarney P-10 State School Parents and Citizens Association, the event is the school’s major fund-raiser and receives the support of a number of community groups.

AFTER a busy summer season the Dalveen Rural Fire Brigade held a sausage sizzle on Saturday morning at the Spano’s IGA in Warwick to raise money for operational expenses.

Thanks to the generosity of the Spano’s IGA Management and shoppers who made donations and purchased sausages and raffle tickets, the Dalveen Fire Brigade has been able to top up their bank account to cover some of the recent operational costs.

It also gave some of the Brigade members the opportunity to meet shoppers and thank them for their support.

Dalveen First Officer Jim Mitchell said the local brigades have been very active attending local fires and helping communities and brigades battling blazes at Millmerran and Inglewood.

ROADS and Maritime Services plans to resurface sections of the New England Highway in towns and rural areas throughout the Northern Tablelands from next week until mid-May with Tenterfield being affected next week.

NSW Member for Northern Tableland Adam Marshall said the RMS was striving to reduce inconvenience to local residents and business operators by doing this necessary work at night, or as quickly as possible during daylight hours.

“Weather permitting, night work will be carried out from 6pm until 6am the following day, and day shifts will be from 6am until

6pm,” Mr Marshall said.

He said the Tenterfield work would be 520 metres of the New England Highway between Miles and Molesworth Streets over five nights from Monday 7 April to Friday 11 April.

Mr Marshall said one-lane traffic controls will be in place.

“This work has been rescheduled from its earlier original dates due to wet weather and to accommodate the Oracles of the Bush Festival,” he said.

Mr Marshall said the benefits of the works program included safer and longer lasting pavements for busy sections of the highway.

Water meter readings underway Council is conducting water meter readings with contractors visiting homes and properties from now to mid-April. The outer regions (eg. Karara, Pratten Leyburn, Allora, Killarney, Yangan, Wallangara and Dalveen) will be done irst and then the major centres of Warwick and Stanthorpe. Council will issue water notices in mid-April. Residents with water meters are asked to ensure dogs are safely restrained and to keep the water meter accessible, clear and visible during this time.

Council road re-seal program nearly complete

Southern Downs Regional Council is progressing well through its road re-seal program and will have upgraded 23 kilometres on the road network by the end of this week.

Manager Construction Works Eric Kraak said re-sealing bitumen roads was important maintenance work and the re-seal of roads in both the southern and northern ends of the SDRC area had been completed. “We’d like to thank residents for their patience during the roadworks,” he said.

Re-sealing work will occur on these roads through to 4 April.

Southern Downs Regional Council, SDIEA (Southern Downs Industry Education Association), and headspace Warwick have partnered once again to stage National Youth Week events, this year themed ‘Our Voice Our Impact’.

Council’s Youth Development Oicer Hailey Cosh encourages young people to attend Youth Concerts on Saturday April 5 in Stanthorpe and Saturday April 12 in Warwick. Concerts feature local young artists from the Southern Downs EDGE (Encouragement, Development, Growth Experience), Southern Downs Program run by Soular Music Services, Gold Drum Recordings and Events and Southern Downs Regional Council.

Warwick Twin Cinema will have $5 discounted movie tickets on Sunday 6 April for young people aged 15–25. The movie showing for that day is Captain America.

The headline event is the Digital Movie and Photo Workshops, in Warwick on Monday April 7 and Stanthorpe on Tuesday April 8, run by ABC Open. Young people 12–25 can use their own digital media devices or loan devices from the Libraries to take photos and make a short movie around the Youth Week theme. On Sunday April 13 the movies will be shown to the whole community at Warwick Town Hall.

On Tuesday April 8 Voyage Fitness ofers a whole day of discounted Gym entry for 12–25year olds. For just $5 young people get access to the Gym and any classes run on that day.

Fitness continues on Wednesday April 9 with YOGA/Pilates at 9:15am in Leslie Park, free to young people aged 12–25 yrs.

Laser skirmish and a skirmish session is on Thursday April 10 at Warwick State High School, from 6:30pm–9:30pm. Young people should register with headspace on 4661 1999.

On Friday April 11 the SDIEA Youth Connections Team takes a group of young people to Goondiwindi for a Skate Workshop/ and South West Championship run by PCYC Goondiwindi featuring Skate Boarding Company Drawing Boards.

“It’s the perfect opportunity to get to know your local library and also to meet up with other families for a catch-up.

Libraries are no longer formal quiet places — they are a hub of learning and community connection. Our staf enjoy the increased visitation during school holidays,” she said.

Ms Shelbourn said a popular pastime at Warwick Library was storytime on Thursdays at 10.30am as well as a special Easter craft activity on April 9 at 9am (bookings essential).

Stanthorpe Librarian Chris Taylor said the Library would be a hive of activity from April 7–17 with an Easter treasure hunt, craft and activities. Storytime will continue through the school holidays Tuesdays at 10.30am.

Making a stand TENTERFIELD Tourism have received a positive response from its appearance at the Brisbane Holiday and Travel Show late last month.

The show, held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre at Southbank, has been hailed as a success by the Tenterfield team.

While event organisers are yet to release official entry figures, more 300 people visited the Tenterfield Tourism stand and spoke to tourism officer Caitlin Reid and business owners, Four regional businesses participated in the show including Tenterfield Escapes and Getaways, Tenterfield Bowling Club, Top of the Town Stanthorpe and Law Dogs Australia.

Tenterfield Tourism was one of a small number of domestic destinations, including Tweed Coast, Scenic Rim and South East Queensland, and was the only NSW destination on show.

Many of the visitors were interested in short-break weekend destinations.

Cr Petty said he very encouraged by the response received at the show.

TENTERFIELD Visitor Information Centre capped off an exciting nine months with their first-ever members networking function at the Corner Life and Style Store and Cafe last week.

More than 35 members attended what is hoped to become a regular event, with the next one planned for June.

VIC co-ordinator Lara Flanagan said the event proved to be an “overwhelming success� and was another major event in what had been a busy time since she took over as co-ordinator. “I joined as Visitors Information Centre co-ordinator last July and Caitlin Reid joined as tourism officer last September,�

During the evening the duo provided the members with an overview of what had been achieved so far. “There is a new website with 5000 unique visitors,� she told the crowd.

“We have had 22,308 visitors through the door over the past 16 months which equates to 1400 a month or 350 a week. “Membership is growing steadily and we now have 91 business members and 29 private members. “We have been running a huge social media campaign - a growing Facebook page, pinterest, twitter, google and Instagram.�

It promised to continue to be busy over the next few months with a number of major events planned, she said.

On 9 April there will be a full day tourism workshop while on 10 April the Biz Re Boost Workshop will be run.

The business and tourism awards will then be held on 21 August.

MORE than 100 orienteers are expected to compete at two events being held on the Southern Downs this weekend, 5-6 April.

With the Easter three-day competition in NSW coming soon, many Queensland orienteers will be looking for some top quality competition in the local terrain to round off their preparation.

As well as competitors from across South East Queensland and the Darling Downs, there is also likely to be a strong contingent of orienteers from the Northern Tablelands Orienteering Club, based in Armidale, attending the events.

On Saturday afternoon, the competition will be held near Leslie Dam, outside Warwick, with five courses on offer to cover the range of ages and abilities and starts will be between 2pm and 3pm.

Bullecourt Boulder Bounders Orienteering Club publicity officer Liz Bourne, said that this area contained a good combination of open, easy terrain suitable for beginners along with more technical areas of granite offering navigational challenges to experienced competitors.

Ms Bourne said that Sunday’s event on private grazing land near Dalveen would be held in more

complex granite terrain and there would be nine courses on offer with starts from 9am-11am.

Local people interested in finding out more about the sport were also most welcome to come along, she said.

“We will have experienced club members at both events to help newcomers learn the basic map reading and navigational skills,” she said.

“Short, easy courses will also be available for people to try out the sport.”

Probus spokesperson Margaret McKinnon said the group enjoyed a “Mystery Trip - to destinations unknown” learning more about three of the area’s more interesting facilities - the Clive Berghofer Careflight Centre at Toowoomba, Double H Alpaca Farm at Kingsthorpe and the Downs Steam Tourist Railway and Museum at Drayton.

“The fun element of guessing the next location to be visited added to a most interesting and informative day,” Ms McKinnon said.

“After an early departure, the bus travelled north via Allora, Clifton, Nobby and Greenmount, with the first port of call being the Clive Berghofer CareFlight Centre, located at the Toowoomba Airport.

The Toowoomba centre services the SouthWest region of Queensland, and beyond in times of serious flooding emergencies.

“In 2013, community support of CareFlight raised 45 per cent of the funding required to operate the service, with funds coming from community events and gifts. The remaining funding came from corporate funding and training classes in underwater skills, for army and navy personnel. “ The second port of call was the Double H Alpaca Farm, located near Kingsthorpe, with a herd of 380 alpacas, the largest alpaca farm in Australia.

The third venue visited was the Downs Steam Tourist Railway and Museum, at Drayton, where lunch was taken in the Catering Car of a train undergoing refurbishment.

RED Cross is celebrating 100 years of volunteering and members hope the Warwick Community will come and enjoy the party.

The organisation are hosting the Warwick Fun Day on 5 April at 41 Guy Street, Warwick from 10am to 2pm to highlight what they do.

The Fun Day will have activities for the whole family, including a jumping castle, games and a free sausage sizzle. Since the organisation’s beginnings nine days after the outbreak of World War I, Australians have been volunteering with Red Cross to help others in need.

Play School’s latest production, Prince of Bears is coming to Warwick in May as part of it’s national concert tour.

Kids Promotions in association with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation is bringing the beloved TV Show’s production to the SCOTS PGC College Assembly Hall on Wednesday, 14 May from 10am.

In Prince of Bears, Big Ted has a royal adventure as he sets out to find his castle. On the way he is joined by his friends Humpty, Little Ted, Jemima and the rest of the Play School toys.

They find themselves having lots of fun and adventure along the way in small farms and in large towns but will Big Ted find his castle ... .

The popular Play School live shows are specially designed to delight preschoolers and parents alike. The concert features songs, games and stories, presented by two Play School presenters, along with the real stars of the show the toys.

“Queensland Wine Week is an excellent excuse for looking at our older chardonnays,” Mr Channon said. “We can go back to 2002 as our starting point. Some of the vintages since then are now missing but we still have at least a few bottles left of all of our major trophy winning vintages.

“It will be interesting to see how the oldest vintages are holding up, but the wines from 2004 still look very good.”

The tasting is available all day on Sunday 6 April at Robert Channon Wines’ cellar door in Bradley Lane off Amiens Road, Stanthorpe. There is a $5 tasting charge and bottles of some of the older vintages are for sale.

It’s a hard, harsh reality AS THE season heads in to Round 5 players, officials and supporters are coming to terms with the harsh reality of the devastating injury to Newcastle players Alex McKinnon.

Confirmation early in the week that the popular and talented youngster faces life as a quadriplegic has been a sobering reminder of how a simple error can have a devastating result. The injury will impact on many in and around the game - none more than Melbourne Storm player Jordan McLean who is still to face the judiciary for what most consider an accident with devastating circumstances.

The Rugby League family have and will rally and wish all involved well.

An outcome such as this brings our weekly tipping results into their true perspective, however the season does continue.

ROOSTERS v BULLDOGS THE Roosters were brought back to the field with a thud in round four and will be looking to erase the memory of their 8-0 defeat at the hands of Manly when they meet the Bulldogs at Allianz on Friday. After three weeks suspension Sonny Bill Williams returns for the Roosters however their troubles continue. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves will miss Friday’s game after pleading guilty to a grade one careless high tackle that pole-axed Glenn Stewart.

The Roosters lacked polish and finish against their arch rivals. There was some outstanding defence from the premiers but they could not crack the Eagles line and now sit with a 2-2 winloss record.

The Bulldogs revelled in their home-away-from-home in Perth. The Dogs did it the hard way as Melbourne dominated the opening exchanges but the visitors suffered a blow when skipper Cameron Smith was ruled out in the warm up. As the game progressed the Dogs found their sea legs in the wet conditions and out performed their rivals 28-2 in the second half to post an emphatic win.

The Roosters have had their feathers ruffled and will be searching for a win but after their performance in the West, the Dogs look to have too much bite.

BRONCOS V PARRA THE Broncos’ self belief has returned in bucket loads. They look super fit and after surrendering a lead in the final minutes of their game against the Roosters looked hungrier against the undefeated Dragons. In one of the most entertaining games of the round

they ran out 36-20 winners.

Brisbane lock Matt Gillett was outstanding. The Brisbane forwards are playing a dominant brand of football and expect to see further improvement as Ben Barba’s form improves.

Their opponents this weekend, made it back-to-back home wins, powering their way to a 32-16 win over rivals Penrith in round four.

There were a couple of moments of sheer brilliance from Eels’ talisman Jarryd Hayne and a complete kicking game from recalled halfback Chris Sandow while winger Semi Radradra continues to weave his magic. Parramatta has caused upsets at Suncorp before and will be tough. The 2013 cellar dwellers are on the improve but the Broncos should add another here.

SHARKS v WARRIORS CRONULLA were on a hiding to nothing last weekend at Hunter Stadium.

They were up against a side playing on raw emotion in front of a crowd high on emotion - the Sharks they were fish out of water.

The 30-0 drubbing leaves Cronulla anchored to the bottom of the ladder with their skipper and other key players still sidelined with injury. Carney is back but looks a long way from 100 per cent. There were few positives from their game against the Knights if the opening four rounds are any indication it is going to be a long season for the Sharks and their fans.

The Warriors finally notched their first win in the NZ capital with a win over the Tigers.

The Warriors survived an early scare as the Tigers took control of the first half. They took a deserved lead through an Anasta try and then extended their lead courtesy of a Tedesco try. The Warriors were rocked, but worked their way back into the game which was blown open in the second half. Great work from Glen Fisiiahi (four tries), Manu Vatuvei Hurrell and Shaun Johnston gave the Warriors a memorable victory. The Warriors are on the improve but the Sharks prognosis is not so positive. PANTHERS v RAIDERS THE Panthers had few answers against the rejuvenated Eels in Round 4. They return to the foot of the mountain this weekend to host the Raiders who were impressive winners over the Bunnies.

TIGERS v SEA EAGLES THE Tigers scooted to a 12-nil lead in Wellington and things were looking grim for the NZedders as the video refs were busy disallowing tries. The Tigers sniffed their opportunity but the Warriors withstood several strong attacks on their line. In a blow to the Tigers’ fullback and try-scorer James Tedesco limped from the field, but looks likely to play against the Eagles.

Manly were at their best in the rematch of the 2013 grand final against the Roosters. It was a classic Manly Roosters duel however the Manly halves completed their sets better than their Roosters counterparts.

Manly dominated possession and field position, but could only manage just a six-point lead at half-time. Kieran Foran was outstanding for Manly and his late inclusion was probably the difference in the match. Blair scored the Eagles’ second and the game was put out of reach by a converted penalty.

Manly look the goods and will be too strong for the Tigers.

COWBOYS v KNIGHTS JONATHON Thurston was seething at the end of the game on Monday night.

The Cowboys’ leader did not bother to contain his anger until he reached the sheds delivering a monumental spray to his side after they fell just short of a win against the Titans - after leading most of the game. The Cowboys handed this game to the Titans on a plate with too many errors in their game.

Newcastle was simply superb against Cronulla in an emotion charged game. The Knights were never going to lose this game - they were playing for injured team mate Alex McKinnon.

Willie Mason led from the front in an outstanding performance. The return of Darius Boyd was a big bonus to the home side. There is much on the plate at the Knights with the Nathan Tinkler ownership issue looming large on the horizon. Newcastle is facing plenty of challenges and you have to wonder how far the emotion and adrenalin can carry them. There has been little for the Knights to smile about recently and the task might prove too tough at 1300smiles.

Cowboys to make amends here.

Cowboys struggle for possession AFTER a promising start to the 2014 season the Warwick Cowboys received a reality check last weekend in their first home game of the season by the Highfields Eagles. Highfields showed that you cannot win a football game without the ball in your hand.

They monopolised possession in the first half, starving the Warwick players of the ball and opportunity. The Cowboys went to half-time trailing 28-nil. Highfields extended their lead to 34-nil midway through the second half before the Cowboys broke their line. Try scorer Anthony McIntosh crossed again before full-time. The final score was 44-8 and the Cowboys coach Jason Bradfield was philosophical after the game admitting that often losses teach teams more than victories. It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Cowboys with good performances from Paul Cantwell and Declan McLoughlin.

Highfields were also successful in the Reserve Grade and Under 18 Games. In Reserve Grade the Cowboys went down 32-18. In a closer contest Dallas Dennison and Kev Poole each scored two tries. Craig Cantwell and Ayrton Friedrichs each scored a four-pointer. Morgan Van der Sande added the extras on two occasions.

In the Under 18 Game the young cowboys were defeated 38-16. THE cricket gods threat to rain on the grand final parade in Stanthorpe last weekend after the heaviest rain in months fell in the days leading up to the game.

A break in the weather and some sun and wind combined with the excellent surface at the CF White Oval were all that was needed to allow the 2013-’14 Grand Final to go ahead and what a gripping game it turned out to be.

In the end it was a combination of the cool head and talent of Souths grand final debutant Hayden Lanza that secured the thrilling victory for the winners.

RSL won the toss and hoping to see the best in the wicket later in the day as conditions improved sent Souths in to bat.

The wicket was always going to be difficult but the experienced opening partnership of Mark Lanza (20) and Ben Staley (22) got Souths off to a solid start before the fall of the first wicket in the 17th over with the score on 45. Any benefit of that good start was lost as the score went from 0/45 to 2/45 in the space of a couple of deliveries as first drop Danny Folkers was run out without scoring.

When Tom Cameron came to the crease he left no-one in doubt of his intentions - his first two scoring strokes netting a four and a six.

Staley and Cameron continued to apply pressure to the bowlers. Cameron top scored with 44 and towards the end of the innings Scott Williams added a valuable 18 runs to the total. The RSL bowlers who have been so tidy in the run to the grand final also contributed to Souths’ overall total of 9/149 with 29 sundries.

Ross Lupton could not emulate his bowling figures in the knock-out semi but claimed three wickets. Duane Lihou, Tom Garland and Will Dowie finished with two wickets each, however the first innings belonged to the batting side.

RSL began their innings confidently and with the loss of only one wicket for 65 runs looked to be tracking nicely towards the required total. Jason Lawer had reached an easy 34 and again the bowlers were assisting with sundries as several wides pushed the RSL total along.

When Lawer was dismissed the game was still well in the balance. RSL have a punishing top order but they lost key wickets at regular intervals and Ross Lupton (45 n.o.) was left to try and guide the side to a win as the Souths bowlers exposed a brittle RSL lower order.

Clever bowling by the Souths attack combined with good field placement and good fielding saw Lupton cemented at the nonstrikers end.

It was time for some heroics from one side and Jordan Lanza playing in his first year of A Grade Cricket and his first Grand Final grabbed the initiative. He clean bowled the last two RSL batsmen to hand Souths their third consecutive premiership .

It was an outstanding performance from the youngster who finished the game with 4/18.

It was no surprise that this talented player who looks to have a bright future in the game was fittingly named Player of the Grand Final.

CORING, SANDING, SHOWERS NO OBSTACLE THE Stanthorpe Golf Course has been recently cored and sanded, however that was no obstacle to Kev Rowling and Rod Werner. A short sharp shower during the afternoon also did nothing to dampen their game and they finished the afternoon with 47 points to win the medley 4BBB Stableford. Their front nine of 23 points was bettered with 24 points on the homeward journey. Werner did the bulk of the scoring on the back nine and the pair collected their prizes from the sponsors for the day, Clive Smith and Keith Cobon.

Four teams finished with the next best score of 43 points resulting in a countback. In the end

Mark Harris and daughter, Georgia, got the nod as the runners-up. It was an excellent round from Georgia who is another youngster who has just started playing in competition events and is playing to her handicap limit.

Ian Henderson seems to rarely go home without a prize. This week he took the pin shot at 3/12.

John Haynes collected the ball for the pin at 17 and pro-pins at 1/10 and 5/14. Max Hunter won the other pro-pin at 9/18.

Linda Kelly held the ladies’ pin at 3/12 and Mary McLucas had best approach at 17.

The rundown included Keith Barnett and Greg Fraser, John Haynes and Richard Reardon, Ron Hansen and Ian Henderson, all with 43 points.

Saturday play will be in the April monthly medal and putting competition and is sponsored by the club captain, Matt Waterworth.

Tee-off is set down from 11.30am and the timesheet is on the board at the clubhouse.

All Stanthorpe members are eligible to enter and Richard Reardon has a full bus which will leave the club at 7.20am sharp. Private transport will be required for others planning on playing.

ANZAC TRIBUTE SHOOT RE-SCHEDULED THE annual Anzac Tribute shoot held by the Inglewood SSAA has been rescheduled from 20 April (Easter Sunday) to Sunday 27 April and will commence at 9.30am.

Last weekend club members held a working bee to make sure everything will be in ship-shape condition for that shoot.

Quentin Chapman and Tom Donald also took the opportunity to give the targets for the shoot a trial run. The bisalloy gongs are attracting plenty of positive comments and are a huge improvement on the patch-out paper targets previously used. The gongs did not fear too much from the Glock.

This Sunday clay targets are the main course.

They will be served with sides of rimfire rifle practice and pistol practice ... or if you wish Anzac shoot practice.

LANZA HERE, LANZA THERE, LANZA EVERYWHERE THE Stanthorpe Cricket Association held their presentation night following Saturday’s grand final. After watching his younger brother Jordan named the Player of the 2013-’14 Grand Final, Hayden Lanza scooped the pool at the presentation evening.

It was no surprise that Hayden Lanza was named the Stanthorpe Player of the Year. The eldest of the two Lanza youngsters had an outstanding season playing in a team that struggled for much of the year.

To add to the top gong he received the trophy for Colt of the Year (Under 21); the Batting Aggregate after scoring a formidable 747 runs and the Best Batting Average 67.91. He did leave some trophies on the shelf for others.

Ben Davies who has also had a wonderful season was named Junior Colt of the Year (Under 18). The safe hands of Curtis Allen have determined the outcome of several games this season and he collected the gong for the most catches in 2013-’14.

Damian Anderson picked up the Bowling Aggregate trophy after taking 33 wickets for the season. He was rewarded for his consistent performances with the ball picking up the trophy for the best Bowling Average (8.27).

I have watched with interest the development of Hayden Lanza. He is a fine young cricketer and the Player of the Year mantle is well deserved. I can’t imagine there would have been anyone prouder than his father, Souths stalwart Bluey Lanza and wife Karen by the end of the evening.

To win a grand final playing in a side with one son and then watch another walk away as Player of the Year made this a truly memorable occasion.

’GARRA SUITS BIG HITTERS AFTER the good drenching the Wallangarra course received earlier in the week the course played longer than usual and suited the big-hitting team of Peter Butler and Steve Hampstead.

The pair won the two-ball ambrose event from runners-up Kevin and Peter Williams. It was little surprise that Steven Hampstead also collected the pin shot at 3/15. Deniss Ree was successful at nine and the 11th once again proved elusive as did the approach shot. This weekend club members play for the April Monthly Medal and putting competition sponsored by the Wallangarra Railway Café. Local Sport MITCHELL BRAVES WEATHER FOR WIN A HEAVY shower of rain was no deterrent to Jamie Mitchell who revelled in the going last Sunday to win Sporter’s in Stanthorpe, staving off runner-up Paul Byrnes who also claimed the Best Gross. The run-downs went to Jim Mitchell and John Walsh. Tiger Woods took the pin shot on the third and Karrie Webb the 17th Barry Jones claimed the Pro Pin. Stephen Kay and Rohan Anderson each left with a meat tray. Tee-off is again between 8am and 8.30am on Sunday and don’t forget to note the Maureen Bates Memorial Day (4 May) in your diaries.

ZEL’S TROPHY DAY A SUCCESS THE scene was set for a big weekend at the Summit Bowls Club when a crowd of over 70 enjoyed a great meal and equally good entertainment on Friday night.

After a couple of days of rain the Summit greens were in perfect condition Saturday for Zel’s Trophy Day. Five games of pairs were played with believe it or not musical accompaniment from virtuoso “Milwaukee” (thanks to music promoter, Brian Wilmot). That set the tone for a great day of bowls filled with good humour and good results.

Chris Stratford and Rob Capelli were pipped at the post by Greg Mugridge and Darren Stanley (score 19:20).

Valda Newlands and Len Covill took on Keith Mungall and Jamie Zamprogno and won in convincing style (33:7). Alex Mattiazzi and Brian Wilmot were (28:17) winners in their game against Attilio Zamprogno and Ray Spiller. Paul Zamprogno and Wayne Thomas were no match for the experience of Dale Barker and Terry (Yogi) Keegan who won 16:28. Phil Davis and Rod Newlands proved too strong for the pairing of Kurt Empen and Eddie Zanatta winning 27:22.

The shortest winning margin went to Greg Mugridge and Darren Stanley and the highest winning margin to Valda Newland and Len Covill. It was a great day and special thanks to Eliseo Zamprogno for sponsoring the day and also for his outstanding cameo performances.

PERSONAL BEST LAST Saturday young Inglewood Sporting Shooter Tristan Unwin shot a “personal best” during the Rose City benchrest rifle titles in Warwick.

In the Hunter Class rimfire competition, 12-year-old Tristan beat all comers from Queensland and NSW. Tristan’s overall aggregate score placed him 20th in the field of 26.He scored a “p.b.” of 50.3 out of 50.5 in relay D in the 50-yard section and a “p.b” of 49.1 out of 50.5 in relay E in the 100yard section. He’s now on the lookout for a bigger trophy cabinet.

NO RAIN AND NOT MANY RUMBLERS THE rain held off for the Red Rooster Rumble in Warwick last Friday and the weekly event was played in perfect conditions but only drew 13 players.

Marty Harris was the eventual winner with 24 points, Gordan McKeen was runner-up after a countback from Doug Wilson. The pins went unclaimed - skinners everywhere.

ONCE MAY BE TWICE TOO MANY PLENTY of stories being told as to why the Warwick Golf Club only holds the Four Ball Best Ball Multiplier once a year. Seems to have a lot to do with results. However the winners, and there’s a good reason from what I’ve heard that it’s only played once a year, but with that said, winners Mick Payne and Jamie Harris seem to have had few complaints. They finished with a whopping 82 points. Peter Morrison and Jay Roberts were runners-up with a respectable 75points.

Wayne Weidman and David Craggs (65), Keith Clarke and Cameron Scutts (65) Lenny Williams and Brandon Jones (63) figured in the rundowns. Pins went to Keith Clarke at five; seven belonged to Ben O’Dea, nine was a skinner; Eddy Kemp claimed 11, 13 went the way of Keith Farrell and Cameron Scutts picked up 16.

This Saturday all golf clubs turn to the April Monthly Medal and the Zone 6 Championships are on this Sunday in Inglewood.

Upcoming events include Saturday the 5th is the Monthly Medal, (the H&J Single Stableford); Sunday the 6th is the Zone 1 Championships at Inglewood, while at headquarters in Warwick on Sunday 13 April the club will be hosting the Condamine Sports day single Stableford.

ANTICIPATION AS BRL SEASON SWINGS INTO GEAR THE 2014 Border Rugby League gets underway Saturday with games at Killarney and Tenterfield.

In the game at Charlie Andrews Oval, Killarney meet the Stanthorpe Gremlins in what looks a tough encounter for the visitors. Killarney picked up from where they finished the 2013 season to win the pre-season Round Robin two weeks ago. The Cutters have lost a couple of key players from their premiership side but have several new recruits who look to have gelled well into the side.

The Gremlins are fielding a new look side under coach Damien Petrie and from early indications look like they are heading for an improved season this year.

Petrie picked up a slight back strain in the first game of the Round Robin but should be back to his best for the season opener.

In Tenterfield all eyes will be on the young Texas side making their return to the competition after injuries forced their withdrawal last season. Although a predominantly young side, the Terriers have several experienced players in the line-up who will play a significant role. Among those is Bennett Sutton who finished the season last year with the Inglewood Roosters. He is in the squad named for representative duties and is sure to be a great asset to his home team this year.

There have been many changes to the makeup of the Tenterfield side since the end of last season. Damien Petrie is now coach of the Gremlins and their 2013 captain Geoff Swan followed the coach to Stanthorpe. Several players have returned to Tenterfield from the Wallangarra Rams and there are also some fresh faces.

The entire face of the coaching staff in the BRL has undergone a dramatic change this season. Tenterfield are now under the guidance of president and captain Brendan Minns. Rod Loy takes on the role of coach as well as president of Texas while John Trindall has taken over the reins as captain coach in Killarney. 2013 coach,

Neil Parfitt has been forced to stand aside due to family reasons. There are also changes at the Wallangarra Rams. Rams President, Steve Kinsela has taken over as their coach and of course the change at the Gremlins has already been mentioned.

Selectors will be carefully watching the performance of all players this weekend with the Border Bushrangers Rep side to be announced following the games. That team will play in the South West Trials in Miles the following weekend.

REDDIES DOMINATE IF Highfields dominated in the league game against Warwick last weekend the boot was definitely on the other foot in the AFL game between the Warwick Credit Union Redbacks and rivals the Highfields Lions.

The Reddies were the dominant force from the outset and never took their foot off the pedal for the entire game which was reflected in the lopsided scoreline - Reddies 20.9.129 - Highfields Lions 8.12.60.

The Reddies have recruited well in the offseason and will only improved as the playing group spend more time together on the training paddock and in game situations. Something that will surely not to be lost on the remaining teams in the competition. The game saw several players returning to the game for the first time this season. Some of those quick to make their presence felt included Coen Slatter, Brendan Iles, Kurt Heier, Matt Sinkins and Kris Millard showed immediate results. The Reddies have depth and a strong Reserve Grade side and several of those players will be pushing for a start in the A Grade side keeping everyone on their toes. It augers well for the Reddies in 2014.
