■ Concerns raised over extent of track clearing...

Train tree chop MORE trees than ever before fell over tracks along the Puffing Billy line in 2013.

This increase led the railway commissioning a report from a professional arborist on the safety of the trees along the line.

The arborist examined all trees along 26 kilometres of tracks between Belgrave and Gembrook.

Last week works started on removing trees along the line in Belgrave.

As resident and member of the

Southern Dandenongs Landcare Group Richard Gipps left for work on Friday morning he noticed that contractors were throwing ropes over a tree next to the railway line.

“I assumed they were just going to trim this healthy looking gum and didn’t think any more about it,” Mr Gipps said.

“Returning home on that evening, I saw this huge pile of leaves and branches only to find they had cut the tree down at the base, destroyed two other trees in the process and

severely damaged a third.”

Mr Gipps said that the Southern Dandenongs Landcare Group was part of an alliance of environmental groups working near the railway.

“The arborist assessed some 360 trees as being dangerous and having the potential to cause damage or injury to Puffing Billy assets, staff volunteers and passengers,” he said.

“But he said that not all trees needed to be removed, large stumps could be left in most cases, some could be lopped and some could have weighty

branches removed so that the habitat could be preserved and erosion prevented.”

Mr Gipps said he was concerned that if a similar level of destruction continued, and four trees instead of one were destroyed, that the Dandenong Ranges would lose 1440 trees.

“I understand the need to maintain the railway, but there was an understanding between the environmental groups and Puffing Billy and I don’t think it’s been adhered to.”

denied that healthy trees had been removed or damaged, and said that approximately 200 trees along the rail way needed remedial action.

“Only trees identified as posing a safety risk are to be felled,” the spokesperson said.

“The Emerald Tourist Railway Board has a strong commitment to the local environment and our policy has always been that only trees regarded as presenting a safety risk are to be felled.

“No trees have been or will be removed outside this policy.”

By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Ranges Council has been told that tenements that restrict building on some blocks in the shire are ‘not easy to discover’.

Kalorama resident Ken Stewart was caught out by the ‘undiscoverability’ of single blocks of land covered by tenement provisions brought in under the 1982 Upper Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges Strategy Plan.

Mr Stewart was granted a permit to build on his Logan Avenue block after Yarra Ranges councillors went against the planning department report recommendation that Cr Len Cox said would have rendered the block ‘useless’.

Tenement provisions effectively saw small blocks of land consolidated in order to keep areas of the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley from being over developed.

Mr Stewart said he had lived in the area for more than 40 years and bought the block, one of five blocks under the tenement, 14 years ago.

He told the Yarra Ranges Council meeting on 11 March that he only discovered the tenement provision when he applied for a permit and had spent thousands of dollars in an effort to meet the requirements to build.

The report recommended the permit be refused on the basis that it didn’t meet two of the 10 test conditions saying it could contribute to incremental erosion of the tenement ability to limit further development and that it was infill development.

“While this may appear to be inequitable to the current owners, there are countless other landowners within this wider area who have had to comply with the control,” the report said.

“Approving this application would be equally unfair.”

In answer to a question from Cr Samantha Dunn on just how difficult it was for prospective buyers to find out whether a block has a tenement attached, planning manager Andrew Paxton replied “in the current plan they are not overt”.

He elaborated by saying

they are not easy to discover prompting Cr Cox’s suggestion “I think planners should, when they have a moment, have a look at this so people know what they have and what they don’t have when they are buying land.”

Cr Jason Callanan, who brought the application to the council table, said he believed it met the provisions including green wedge, bushfire and erosion management overlays and moved an alternative motion to approve the application.

Cr Jim Child said going back to his days in the Shire of Upper Yarra, the tenements were a blessing.

“We are bearing fruit from that now,” he said but added that he didn’t believe that Mr Stewart’s application would set a precedent.

“We have to look at each one on its merits,” he said.

Cr Dunn opposed it saying it was unique to the Yarra Ranges and came about to protect the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley.

THEY’VE bought the Angliss Hospital new pillows for each and every ward, but that’s just the beginning.

Members of the Angliss Hospital Ferntree Gully Auxiliary looked back on another successful year at their AGM last week, celebrating yet another successful 12 months.

The group handed over a cheque for more than $66,000 to go towards a humidifier, ECG machine and ventilator, and other items.

The Angliss Hospital has now received more than $1.3 million from the group since 1961.

President Colleen Marke reported that 2013 had been another fantastic year, citing a few new ideas and activities as being the most rewarding.

Jenny Waite from the Special Care Nursery gave those who attended an insight into how their fund-raising helped those in the hospital.

She gave a presentation on one of the $30,000 ventilators her ward received last year

Volunteer Max Lulham was presented with a 15 years of service badge from the auxillary after he retired from the group due to health reasons. Max has spent 17 years raising funds for outside furniture.

“This machine is state-ofthe-art and can help us with very unwell babies,” Ms Waite said.

“We have 2220 births a year at the Angliss and this piece of machinery can really help those who need it most.”

Angliss nurse Veronica Baker works in the operating theatres and thanked everyone who

volunteered their time.

Angliss Hospital chief of site and clinical operations Ben Kelly said it was important that the auxiliary’s great work was acknowledged.

He said that volunteers should keep their eyes open for big things in the future.

“We’re currently working to increase our capacity,” Mr Kelly said.

“Our wards could do with an update and we’re working hard on that.

“We are also in talks about the needs of our local community until 2022, you could say a blueprint of the future.”

He said that the aim was for the masterplan to meet the needs of the community.

“We want to have more theatres, this means we can increase the numbers of emergency and elective procedures as well as more complex procedures,” he said.

“The future of the Angliss is bright and, while we have no funding commitments just yet, we’re in a strong position to go forward.”

Track to tackle trouble

By DANIELLE GALVIN A GROUP of Cockatoo parents is calling for a BMX track at Alma Treloar Reserve to keep their children out of mischief.

The campaign for a BMX track in town is gaining momentum with an 500 signature online petition and a Facebook page set up by a group of local parents.

Trevor Phillips from the Cockatoo BMX Sub-Committee said Cardinia Shire Council should make use of the land next to the off-leash dog area at the reserve.

“A BMX track would be somewhere the whole family can go,” he said.

“We have another whole generation coming up in this town and I don’t want my kids growing up and getting into mischief and doing stuff that’s not right.

“They need somewhere where they can go and wear themselves out.

“I used to ride and hang out at a BMX track and people would come from all over the place.”

Mr Phillips said there were a

number of smaller towns in the shire that had jumps tracks, BMX tracks and other similar facilities.

“Our view is to build something where BMX clubs could hold race meets here,” he said.

Mr Phillips’s partner Kathy Brown said the skate bowl was geared towards experienced older riders.

“Young kids totally miss out our children are 11 and they can’t use it,” she said.

“We need somewhere safe for them to ride to school but it’s not

encouraged because of how dangerous the roads are.”

The council’s recreation development co-ordinator Mark Stahel said the council supports skate and BMX activities in the shire and would be developing a new skate and BMX strategy in the 2014-15 financial year.

“While the group has Alma Treloar Reserve in mind as the site for a BMX track, there are a number of factors the council would need to consider before it decides whether a track can be constructed and where it would be located,” he said.

Boots are made to beat fire THE children at Olinda Rural Fire Brigade are excited with new boots and equipment following a $1200 grant from Telstra’s Kids Fund.

The junior firefighter program at the Olinda brigade has about eight members between 11 to 16 years old and teaches basic skills to prepare them to become firefighters.

Junior leader at the Olinda brigade Julie de Loryn said everything the children learn as juniors is just a basic version of what the senior members learn.

“On a slightly less intense level we teach them everything like that so when they turn 16 they can become a firefighter if they want to,” she said.

“To get the kids boots and safety gear is awesome.

“Otherwise it would be them having to go out and fund-raising and they are all busy with school.”

Twelve-year-old Pyper Charl- ton from the junior fire-fighter program said she likes helping out around the

station and meeting new people through the program.

“We get to ride around on the fire trucks and fold hoses,” she said.

“We learn how to tie knots and what to do in a fire situation.”

Grant recipients are nominated by Telstra employees whose children in their immediate family are actively involved in the community organisation.

Telstra Country Wide area general manager for Melbourne’s north-east Ingrid Harvey said the grants positively impact on children’s lives and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

“It’s absolutely terrific to be able to encourage local communities to work with children,” Ms Harvey said.

“It’s all about their education and supporting them and watching children grow and develop.

“Over the past 12 years, Telstra’s Kids Fund has provided $8.8 million to help more than 7600 local organisations across Australia.”

Vicious raid TWO staff members are recovering in hospital following an armed robbery at an Olinda hotel.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said that two offenders wearing balaclavas made their way into the hotel not long after 2am carrying blunt instruments.

They then assaulted male and female staff members, both in their 50s, leaving them with serious head injuries.

The matter is being investigated by the Armed Crime Taskforce and urged anyone who saw someone in the area at the time to contact police.

It is an advertisement that should make your blood boil.

The Liberal Government’s massive cuts to TAFE directly led to the forced closure of Swinburne Lilydale - both the university and TAFE. It is now a ghost town. No students in classrooms or lecture theatres, just a padlocked gate.

only an expression of interest in educational provision and that any issue of rezoning was not a matter for Swinburne. Yet the invitation specifically mentions potential re-zoning to allow a variety of uses.”

The cat is well and truly out of the bag. The Liberal Government forced the closure of the only higher education facility in the outer-east; now they want to sell it off and allow it to be rezoned for anything other than TAFE and higher education.

The Government wants to sell the university and TAFE buildings to developers and to Yarra Ranges Council for plush new offices.

Blitz targets safety SLOW down, and reduce the risk of crashing.

Too many motorcycle crashes are happening on local roads, mainly on the weekend when they are filled with tourist traffic, say police.

TAC funding has been made available to the Cardinia Highway Patrol (CHP) which will be used to enforce speed limits and ensuring riders are licensed.

Cardinia Highway Patrol’s Leading Senior Constable Peter Henderson said that TAC funding will help reduce col-

Opinion Load of rubbish THE letter by Stan Moore (Plan Against Litter, Mail, 4 March) CEO of the National Packaging Covenant Industry Association was a load of rubbish.

Mr Moore said their organisation “focused on minimizing the impact on the environment”.

In practice the only thing they minimise is litter reform so that it has no impact on industry.

They do this by lobbying against reforms that they do not like.

The best example is their current misinformation campaign against a refund system on cans and bottles.

This reform would not be needed if existing litter policies worked.

Eight billion drink containers are not recycled in Australia every year.

These are either littered or go to landfill.

The well-known refund system in South Australia was introduced in 1975.

Industry has had 39 years since then to come up with a credible alternative.

Victoria needs a new litter policy that works, not a litter policy that works for industry!

IN the Mail on 4 March under “Briefly” New Home for Police, mention is made that the new Emerald police station is near Emerald’s main shopping district.

The only major shop at the east end of Emerald is Woolworth’s supermarket with various small shops.

All the other main shops are at the railway end of Emerald, viz post office, newsagent, all the banks, bakery, Ritchies supermarket, Mitre 10 hardware, butcher, fruiterer and numerous other shops.

Express yourself IS ANYONE else annoyed with Monbulk Safeway’s policy regarding the express checkouts?

When I questioned why customers were taking a full load of shopping to the eight items or less counter I was told that “the express checkout isn’t a rule. It’s a choice.

Shoppers can choose to use it for a full shop or as an express lane”.

In that case they should change the sign.

I don’t know of another Safeway where this either/or attitude prevails.

Cat calls THE recent decision by Yarra Ranges Council to impose a 24/7 cat curfew is outrageous.

The basis for this decision is, at best, extremely questionable as the claim is that the decision was reached after a survey of Yarra Ranges residents.

To make a decision based on the following published figures: 135 in favour of 24/7, 91 in favour of night-time curfew and eight not in favour of any curfews, is in anyone’s language, not representative of the approximately 140,000 residents.

It is more aligned to the election of Kim Jong-Un in North Korea and Mr Putin’s referendum regarding the future of Crimea.

IN THE Mail of 28 January you printed front page article describing an attack on our dog by two dogs off their leads in Kallista.

We would like to thank the Mail for helping us to find the owners of the two dogs.

We have been asked by many people as to what happened and the outcome, so we would like to let all those concerned members of the public know how things turned out.

With your help a member of the public recognised the description of the dogs and with the hard work of ranger Jessica Crawford we identified them.

We were contacted by the attack dogs’ owner who was unaware of the damage caused by the dogs.

We were all in shock at the time and just grabbed our dog Pix and left the scene.

A FRIEND recently expressed concern at the way the Napthine Government is cutting funding to youth and pathway services, such as TAFE, while pouring monies into the construction of new prisons.

The Law Institute of Victoria has a strong stance on this.

Specifically they advocate a justice reinvestment approach “... to reducing crime by reallocating funds from the prison system to community services which aim to prevent crime”.

I see this as a hand-up versus a knock-down approach to addressing those on the margins.

The Victoria I was raised in, and the one I hope to raise my three sons in, is more ‘hand-up’ than ‘knock-down’.

It is a shame Victoria’s current Premier doesn’t agree.

Transport key polls plank

By REBECCA BILLS PUBLIC transport priorities will be a major factor influencing votes at the upcoming State Election, according to Eastern Transport Coalition chairperson Samantha Dunn.

Cr Dunn reported in her blog that in an Eastern Suburbs Transport Poll, more than 1000 residents in Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs found that 64 per cent of residents rated improving and expanding public transport as a top priority or very high priority.

“We’ve been waiting long enough

for public transport projects in the east, residents aren’t prepared to wait another couple of generations,” she said.

She said the number one issue that she heard about in the hills was that the bus timetables did not connect with train timetables.

“Particularly at the tail end of people’s journeys, the bus and train times do not link up, and I often hear from parents with kids doing apprenticeships leaving very early in the morning that there is not even a service capacity to get them to the station,” she said.

“The frequency is just not there.

“There is a lot of work to do still in regards to public transport in the hills and these things cannot be achieved overnight, but there does need to be political will to get things done and this year provides great opportunity to put the pressure on.”

Cr Dunn said the Napthine Government’s new Station Precinct Engagement Program that included station precinct development at Ringwood station was well overdue.

“It’s good to see funds committed

to that - anything that helps make public transport more accessible is a good thing,” she said.

The program seeks to deliver improved railway stations as well as a mix of housing, retail, commercial and public space for surrounding communities.

Premier Denis Napthine said the program would deliver developments across metropolitan Melbourne with the community and public transport users benefitting via new upgraded facilities in the surrounding stations and broader precinct.

Sheer effort leads to Olympics silver

By REBECCA BILLS GRADE 6 students at Monbulk Primary School met with Winter Olympics silver medallist David Morris on Friday.

Morris snapped up Australia’s third medal at the Sochi Winter Olympics, soaring his way to the podium in the men’s aerial skiing event on 17 February at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park.

He shared with students how the many years of knockbacks from the Australian team motivated him to prove their decision wrong and soar to glory.

“I had to endure two-and-ahalf years of ‘no’s before I got a ‘yes’,” he said.

“To me, it (the silver medal) is just a solid reminder that I have worked hard and that being consistent and determined over the years pays off.

Morris spoke to the stu-

dents about his humble beginnings jumping into a leechinfested pond in Lilydale to having to squash eight years of training into four to be ready for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

“Sharing my experiences is very important to me as I was helped by my teammates when I started and inspired by the words of other international athletes at the time - I think it is my job to do the same especially with the profile I have earned myself.”

Monbulk Primary School Grade 6 teacher Wendy Smith said for the children to listen and meet someone who had been so successful in fulfilling their dreams was wonderful.

“It’s exciting for the children as we are very passionate in Australia about our sport,” she said.

“To have somebody who has fulfilled his dream is great

as the children can actually listen to him and think ‘we are seeing someone who can do it, so maybe we can too’.

“I think at this age, lots of students have the dream of being the AFL sports player or represent their country, so to actually meet someone who has and to hear about their inspiration and their goals of how they made it is very inspiring for the children.”

Morris said he would be in Australia for a fair few months allowing his body to recover.

“I took some time off two years ago for my mental sanity and for my body to heal and I think it will be a good idea to do this again, so that I can return in peak form,” he said.

“I’m sure the sporting world will see me again soon enough but for now, home sweet home with friends and family.”

New Emerald Football Netball Club president Bruce Rush also spoke about the upgrades taking place at the Bombers’ Chandler Reserve base - including a new playing surface - while Bill Kuys from the Emerald Sporting Club (made up of all the reserve’s user groups) said work will commence later this year on new social rooms.

LOCALS can feel at ease knowing the Eastern Health system has achieved outstanding accreditation results.

Public health services received their results from the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS).

The ACHS is a formal process to access the quality and safety of healthcare.

This process allows health services to receive feedback and identify where they need improvements in the healthcare system.

Chief executive Alan Lilly said on behalf of the ACHS they were always striving for continuous improvements in everything they did.

“I’m extremely proud to see so many areas achieve this status.” Mr Lilly said.

The high-achieving areas included Eastern Health’s partnerships with consumers, safety and quality governance, information management, workforce management and falls prevention.

Celebrating name change

Group get-together adds due weight SOME of the Emerald community groups most in need of members or an extra hand are some of the least well known throughout the town.

But after a networking evening at the town’s RSL recently, that has all started to change.

Organised in conjunction with the Emerald Village Committee, the RSL hosted representatives from more than 50 local community groups and bodies to initiate interaction between them for the betterment of the town.

The night also allowed the RSL to identify welfare needs within the community and to showcase the club as more than ‘just a Diggers’ club’.

Dr Hamish Russell from the Emerald Village Committee said the evening was “a great night for the whole community”, adding that the town’s Spatial Plan was now open for more public input and that the groups in attendance had a role to play in helping decide the future direction of the town over the next 15 to 20 years.

Of the community groups in attendance on Wednesday, Ian Wakefield from Emerald Rotary was the first to speak.

Jean Hayne from community magazine Signpost spoke about the mantra that those involved with the publication believe “it’s important to know your neighbour and your neighbourhood”.

Signpost was created 14 years ago and is free to all 3782 letterboxes.

It has become a key tool in helping empower local residents with a sense of belonging to their town.

Emerald U3A’s Mike Ellery told the gathering that he once had to answer a question of “are you guys a radio station, or a submarine?”

The U3A - or University of the Third Age - operates out of the old Em-

erald CFA building and is perfect for retirees who want to enjoy their lives, but also share their expertise and give back to their community.

Aside from offering a range of subjects, the Emerald U3A has “200 friends to share your day with”, according to Mr Ellery.

Ian Ash, meanwhile, spoke about how the Emerald Business Group was founded four years ago to help local businesses operate and collaborate more effectively.

Already the most active business group in the region, it always welcomes new members.

The Caring Women’s Group, an unheralded local body, aims to provide a social network of friends to local women.

The group, which is just $5 per year to join, also fundraises for the local community and donates to charity.

St Mark’s Church, with 24 people on its payroll, is one of Emerald’s biggest employers.

A part of the town’s make-up since the 1870s, the church prides itself on its Emergency Support Team for local emergency workers, and its op-shop - which has been operating for more than 25 and given more than $900,000 back to the community.

Danger road safety moves ROAD safety works on BelgraveHallam Road at Belgrave South will address a history of crashes in the areas.

The $700,000 road safety upgrade project is currently underway focusing on the stretch of road between Colby Drive and Cambridge Street.

Gembrook MP Brad Battin said the road was a well-known spot for crashes.

“In the five year period to June 2013 we have seen 22 casualty crashes at this location, six of which have resulted in serious injury,” he said.

“This project will see 245 metres of guard fence and 85 metres of wire rope safety barriers with post cushioning installed and will improve the safety of everyone using this stretch of road.

“The project will also realign the curve and includes improvements to surface drainage in order to reduce water on the road and the sealing of the roads shoulders.”

The project is due for completion by mid-2014.

Avon calling to fight cancer in breast ever campaign

By REBECCA BILLS AVON ladies from around the hills are coming together for Avon’s Breast Cancer Crusade.

Avon district sales manager Dee Spark said Avon is the world’s number one supporter of the fight against breast cancer having donated more than $780 million.

“We are proud to be the largest corporate supporter globally,” she said.

“In Australia and New Zealand Avon representatives have raised over $11.7 million through

sales of our Pink Ribbon products - 100 per cent of profits from these items go towards breast cancer research and patient support programs.

“Local Avon women from around our local district of Ferntree Gully, Boronia, Upwey and the Belgrave area are coming together - it’s just one way that we can do something for the community.”

Ms Spark said breast cancer effects not only the person fighting the disease but the entire family and Avon is dedicated to helping in any way it can.

“Our Avon representatives donate their time to hosting the Breast Cancer stands in our communities,” she said.

“With the support of shops donating their space we are able to reach out to the community for their continued support.

“One in 10 women will be diagnosed with the disease and breast cancer is the most common cancer for women.”

Mayor backs overlay plan

By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Ranges mayor Fiona McAllister has expressed optimism on a redevelopment of the Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO), though a lack of immediate timeline continues to leave land-owners frustrated.

Cr McAllister met with Planning Minister Matthew Guy earlier this

month, and said she was “more optimistic” regarding the controversial planning overlay.

Cr McAllister said she spoke about the issue from a local perspective, adding that while the BMO outlined acceptable bushfire risk for buildings, the overlay was interpreted as zero-risk.

She said the minister seemed recep-

tive to the ideas, including more flexibility and the possibility of building standards or alternatives - such as bunkers - to help landowners build.

“It’s about allowing people to build safely with enough mechanisms to build safely,” she said.

The BMO applies to land that may be significantly impacted by bushfires

and requires new developments to have bushfire protection measures.

However, these measures can be inconsistent with other planning overlays and legal requirements, leaving many blocks of land unable to host houses.

The overlay affects significant areas of the Yarra Ranges, with some

townships almost entirely covered by the overlay.

In December 2013, Mr Guy said a government review of the BMO would take place this year.

The Mail reported on 25 February that the review of the BMO was expected to be complete before mid-year, but no official timeline has been set.

Art dominates at school fete, mate Active April

By REBECCA BILLS EACH student that attends Belgrave South Primary has contributed to five different paintings that will be auctioned off at the upcoming school fete.

Belgrave South Primary School Grade 1 and 2 teacher Meredith Pocklington said the idea of the artwork was created by a parent at the school.

“The idea was to do some work of art that all the children could participate that could be made into artworks that could be auctioned off,” she said.

“It’s a nice memento that parents of that level can take home if they choose to bid.

“The money is going to-

wards new equipment for the children and other resources that is needed.”

Amusement rides, live music, arts, craft and the auction will all be part of the fete on Saturday 29 March, celebrating all things Belgrave South Primary School.

Headlining at this year’s fete is the Mama Patch Funk and Soul band that is made up of seasoned musicians who love to groove.

Festive spirit pervades school STUDENTS, teachers, parents and organisers are busy getting ready for the upcoming 2014 Macclesfield Primary School Field Festival.

Event organiser Abby Nichols said the festival was the major fund-raiser for the school and it would be an event the whole community could enjoy.

“There will be lots of rides and entertainment with each classroom hosting a stall,” she said.

“It’s been a while since we have done something like this we are very excited.”

Festival co-ordinator Sue Howard said preparation for the event was going well with an international band playing at the event.

“We have a massive line-up

of entertainment planned including past students and a designated section for the younger kids to have interactive songs,” she said.

“Including the stalls, there are all the rides including a massive big sharks slide, huge climbing wall, jousting sticks, chair ‘o’ plane and jumping castle as well as Lizzie’s Lizards Reptiles to play with,” Nichols said.

“The students are all very excited to have their own stalls as well - in total including community stalls there will be 43 at the event.”

The Macclesfield Primary School Field Festival is on Saturday 29 March, running from 3pm to 9pm.

Highland fling offers fun

By REBECCA BILLS THE upcoming Ringwood Highland Games will now be held at the East Ringwood Football Oval after 18 years at Jubilee Park, Ringwood.

Event organiser Sue Mac -Leod said it was a lot of work organising next Sunday’s event but very satisfying seeing everyone come together to celebrate Scottish heritage.

“Lots of different things will be going on all day,” she said.

“We have a huge dog flyball competition that will see 20 teams of dogs that come from all over Victoria compete.

“I have 18 Scottish clans coming to perform at the event - the Geelong Highland Games only had seven clans.”

The Highland Games are events held throughout the year

The Ringwood Highland Games is an opportunity to enjoy all things Scottish. 117265 in Scotland and other countries as a way of celebrating Scottish and Celtic culture and heritage - especially that of the Scottish Highlands.

In early Games the contests of strength – jumping, running, throwing and riding – were used

as a means of keeping men fit for war. Clans would compete.

The Ringwood Highland Games is on Sunday 30 March at East Ringwood Football over from 9.30am to 4pm. Entry to the event is through Mines Road.

Win in classic style AFTER nearly six months of blood, sweat and tears, Seville confirmed its status as the powerhouse of the modern era as it secured a third premiership.

In RA Finger Trophy action, defending premiers Healesville also made it back to back premierships with a comprehensive display against Yarra Junction.

Junction won the toss and asked Healesville to put a score on the board.

The Bloods immediately put the pressure on the Junction bowlers despite losing their openers relatively early.

Former A Grade captain Stephen James continued his good recent higher grade form with a brisk half century.

With the support of the ever improving Liam Daly, the pair had the Bloods on the brink of blowing the contest wide open.

Even with the loss of James with the score on 108, the Bloods forged forward.

Plugger Davern joined Daly and the pair put together a quick 50 run partnership to have Healesville in the box seat at 3/163.

The quick dismissals of Davern and Daly to the bowling of Daryl Chaproniere saw the game take an unexpected turn.

In an inspired period of play, the Eagles captured 5/31, to have the Bloods teetering at 8/194 and in danger of folding for under 200.

Finals cricket is the domain of experienced campaigners, and none are more seasoned than Bloods captain Allan Pearce.

Pearce (37 n.o.), with the support of youngsters Dillon Kerr and Ryley Howard-Scales, led his side from the front and not only led his side to relative safety but ensured they would compile a challenging total for the Eagles to chase.

Eventually, Healesville was bowled out for 262 in the shadows of stumps.

Graeme Le Brocq (4/43) and Mark Richards (3/59) led from the front for the Eagles with the ball.

Despite the fall of two early wickets, the Eagles progressed their score to 2/39, and would have been confident of building a platform on which to attack the formidable total after tea.

After leading his team’s tail with the bat, Allan Pearce wound back the clock with the ball and rolled through the Eagles batting line-up like a hot knife through butter.

With figures of 7/5, Pearce looked as if he would get a wicket with every ball.

With great accuracy and swing both ways, the Junction batsmen had no answers and were dismissed for a dismal 50 runs.

The best game of the weekend came in the C Grade grand final as Wandin pulled off a memorable win after an intriguing contest against Launching Place.

The Bulldogs batted first and battled to give their innings momentum against some quality bowling, particularly from Launch stars Cam Hoare (3/30) and Lochie Winter-Annette (2/50).

With plenty of starts, the Wandin batsmen had the opportunity to capitalise, but with no batsman scoring above 30, they would have been disappointed not to score more than 170, but satisfied with a defendable score on the board.

The Launching Place batting lineup has been one of the strongest in C Grade this season and a chase of 170 would have posed little fear.

With semi-final centurion Hoare (74) again at his best, and well supported by Stuart Parker (35), Launch-

ing Place looked well in control of the game.

Unfortunately for Launch, warning signs were evident in its semi-final win as its middle to lower order was unable to capitalise on an impregnable position.

This week it was unable to guide the team to victory after the top order had gained a commanding position.

Jamie Oakley capped off a memorable finals series as his figures of 4/54 bowled Launch out for 154 and his side to a well-earned premiership.

Premiership fancies Powelltown will be licking its wounds after capitulating in the D Grade grand final after dominating the home and away season and day one of this contest.

Powelltown stars Stuart Thompson (5/62) and Benny Dunne (3/32) once again showed the way with dominant displays of bowling to dismiss Yarra Junction for an under par 134 on day one.

Someone forgot to tell young Eagles stars Brad Nightingale (5/27) and Jesse Cook (4/17) as they made a mockery of the underdog tag.

The pair left everything on the field and rolled the unbackable favourites for 51.

Asked to bat again in a vain attempt at a reverse outright result, the Eagles were not going to let this game slip to see out the day on 2/72 and a memorable premiership victory to lift the club’s spirits after tough losses in the top two

grades.

Yarra Glen was the first premiers of the season as it accounted for Silvan in the One Day Grade.

Yarra Glen made short work of the Slugs’ strong batting line-up to bowl them out for a disappointing 96.

In reply, they sauntered to victory with seven wickets in hand.

By DENNIS FULLER WITH the weather gods smiling expansively at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday, stableford was dished up for those who wished to dine.

And smiling broadly was Peter Clowes (17) who came in with 40 stableford points.

After an anxious wait and many furrowed brows it was declared that his 40 points was better than Dennis Fuller’s (13) when the countback system was run across the cards.

Of the great unwashed, Leigh Morison continued a rich vein of form to come in with 38 as did Ken Hill.

Conrad Whitlock had a break from driving his Targa Ferrari around the Grand Prix track to card 37 while Kameron Geeves played to his handicap with 36 points.

The winners of the Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pins were Dave Yates on the fourth, Graham White on the seventh, Ken Hill the 12th, Finn White the 13th and Allan Ecclestone showed his prodigious class by winning the pro pin dinero on the 18th.

The ladies event became a one horse race when Petunia Jones gave the others a real hammering with only Brianna McCoy ending within shouting distance.

Next Saturday at Emerald Golf Club there is a par competition followed on Sunday with the first round of the handicap pennant when the locals are at home to Wellington Links.
