In late news community organisations in Noosa will soon find it easier to apply for Community Benefit Fund grants of up to $35,000 thanks to a new, simple, one-stop process introduced into Parliament on Tuesday

by Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Jarrod Bleijie.

Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, said the existing four funding programs would be merged into one and the level of funding would be standardised.

“This will take the

guesswork out of the grants process which will make life much easier for eligible community groups,” he said.

“In the past, community groups have had to spend considerable time interpreting their eligibility for funding, depending on which grant they were applying for.

“The merging of the four current funding programs means eligible organisations will have simple, one-stop access to funding to help t hem continue their important work.

“Four funding rounds each year also means that the next opportunity will

come around quickly and this simplified approach will cause the application process to no longer be a task dreaded by the volunteer secretary of our community organisations.

“By introducing one system for the whole State, we have also levelled the playing field to ensure money is going to the groups who need it most.

Cooroy goes into battle JOLENE OGLE Cooroy locals have upped the fight to save their beloved bowls club with a heartfelt petition, just as submissions close for the purchase of the venue.

The Cooroy RSL announced the sale of the Opal Street bowling green in an unsigned advice in late December citing “sustained continual losses” as the reason for the closure

of the Cooroy bowls club restaurant, Locale, and sale of the land.

Cooroy RSL & Citizens Memorial Bowls Club president John Simmons said the closure of the bowls club was “the hardest [decision] ever undertaken by the Board, given that the focus of the club has always been to serve the community by providing affordable facilities and services to its members and the community”.

This week, members of the bowls club began a petition stating they “reluctantly accept that sale is neces-

sary in the financial interest of Club Cooroy (Cooroy RSL)” but, urge the RSL board to not accept the highest offer submitted.

The petition asks the Board to “exercise discretion” and to “consider the longer term interest of the Cooroy community in evaluating the offers received”. The petition urges the board to defer the decision of the sale of the land until the annual general meeting on March 30, where written evaluations can be submitted and a general vote taken. Mr Simmons said

the board was aware of the petition but was yet to receive it; however Mr Simmons said it was difficult to consider the requests made until all submissions were received.

Submissions to purchase the property closed yesterday. It is tipped that a major developer has submitted an offer to develop the land but a Cooroy Bowls Club insider said two wellknown, local families have also made offers to purchase the land, with the promise of reinvigorating the muchloved bowls club.

Courts urged to take action JOLENE OGLE Police Prosecutor Shane Raison has urged the local courts to send a message to drink drivers who continue to clog the courts every week.

“Last month, within the immediate Noosa area, there were three very serious traffic accidents; all involved alcohol,” Sgt Raison said.

The court heard two of the people

involved in the accidents are still in hospital with one remaining in an induced coma.

Something needs to be done and the court can assist by ordering drink-driving offenders to attend the Driver Awareness program prior to passing sentence, Sgt Raison said.

The Driver Awareness program is a one-day course where offenders are addressed by car crash victims, sole survivors of drink driving accidents as well as police officers who attend

the devastating fatal accidents on local roads.

“We need to be seen to be proactive. We need to be seen to do something about the behaviour at this end of the coast,” he said.

Sgt Raison’s comments come as nine locals faced Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday, five of whom were caught driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) over 0.150 per cent.

The highest reading before court this week was a 61-year-old man who

blew 0.236 per cent while behind the wheel of his Suzuki Swift.

The man, who previously pleaded guilty to driving with a BAC of 0.171 per cent in 2009, was fined $1,200 and disqualified from driving for 12 months. A conviction was recorded.

A 29-year-old beautician student also appeared and pleaded guilty to driving with a BAC of 0.129 per cent.

The woman was fined $800 and disqualified from driving for six months. A conviction was recorded.

All the above plus a fine touch of madness made last week’s Crick’s Noosa Festival of Surfing, presented by Jeep, perhaps the best ever. And the 23-year-old festival has seen some beauties over the years.

“Last year we had great waves right up to finals day,” said festival director Phil Jarratt, “but we had to finish in pretty dribbly surf. This year it kept building all week and absolutely pumped on finals day. Back in 2010 we had a similarly substantial swell for the festival, but it rained all week. This time we were just blessed.”

The fine madness was provided by thousands filling every vantage point on the beach and rocks to watch the VetshopAustralia.com.au Surfing Dogs, the brave efforts of tyro surfers from around the world in the Mojo Surf Backpackers’ Challenge, and the crazy antics of “The Two Harries” in the Miss Moneypenny’s Tandem and the Little Humid Costume Surf.

In the serious surfing, Noosa’s Harrison Roach once again proved to be the man to beat, taking out the headline Vans Logger Pro, the Deus Womp Comp and the Jeep Waterman Challenge at Double Island Point. Other stand-out surfers over the week were former world longboard champion Taylor Jensen from California, Hawaii’s Honolua Blomfield and Sunshine Coasters Bowie Pollard and Mitch Surman.

Observations from the bleachers In the first part of a two-week series, Carolyn Beaton reports on the current Noosa Biosphere Reserve (NBR) management review. While she is Communications Director for Noosa Biosphere Limited she has written this piece in a private capacity at the invitation of Noosa Today.

CAROLYN BEATON The opportunity for Noosa stakeholders to contribute to the initial consultation phase of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve (NBR) management model review concluded last week.

The purpose of these observations is to set the scene for those who did not attend the review sessions.

The review brief advertised a desire to focus on “big” new ideas for the vision and structure of the NBR project and the subsequent sessions also touched on branding, community awareness, community capacity and buy-in.

There has been a very rapid threeweek process since written submissions closed on February 24. It could

be likened to speed dating, with suitors vying for Council’s attention, and different proposals put forward.

Council was keen to hear from people with different ideas to the current NBR structure. Five submissions were “short-listed” for further consideration from approximately 65 received. Think the popular TV show The Bachelor. The finale in this four-part series will conclude on April 15 (think final rose-giving ceremony), when Council’s Working Party (Mayor Playford and Councillors Abbot, Pardon and Wellington) will announce their preferred model, drawing from the options put on the table (#nothornsplease).

I attended the two public sessions of the Council’s Working Party on March 4 and 11 and the closed session for the Noosa Biosphere Ltd

(NBL) collective on March 13. NBL community volunteers are the current custodians of the NBR enterprise under its existing constitution.

No one, other than Council’s Working Party, has been privy to the submissions tended to Council, but the public sessions – attended by approximately 100 interested people over the two nights - allowed an insight into the proposals being put forward by the five favoured submitters.

They were Noosa Biosphere Limited (presented by Dr Sue Davis), Looking Glass Pty Ltd (presented by Allan Bonsall), Kayak Noosa and Sustainability Partners (presented by Cathie Withyman), Noosa Parks Association and Noosa Biosphere Association (presented by Dr Michael

Gloster), and Dr Brian Stockwell, who presented in an independent capacity.

Facilitator Johanne Wright gave instructions to the public gallery to turn off mobile phones and not to direct comments to the presenters or the Working Party. There was arguably an opportunity lost to encourage a lively, parallel Twitter conversation as the presentations were rolled out (#doyouknowwhatgovernance-

While there was a structure to these sessions, there was also a degree of informality that I had not anticipated. Working Party members were able to seek points of clarification, ask questions and make comments. There were some surprisingly candid personal opinions from Mayor Playford about the way the current NBR model is working given that it was a review forum. I made comparisons with reviews and inquiries that I had been involved with and reminded myself that Noosa rarely does “formal”. It is simply not our style.

Overall, there were a number of common themes, particularly in Session One, and a certain alignment of the ideas presented by Allan, Michael and Cathie.

Biosphere: Mayor challenges RIGHT $500,000 a year cost ON! JIM FAGAN

Pity the day when the present trend to reduce the level of service to the community prevails. The horror stories from places like America where the wallet determines the level of care provided, are here for us in the near future.”

Noosa has the opportunity within 10 years of being recognised world-wide as the urban place that has done so well in connecting the environment to people, the economy and jobs.

And says Mayor Noel Playford, “We are breaking new ground all the time and it is being done by the community.”

He was commenting on submissions on the future and management model of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve which have been made to the council during last two weeks. These are now being considered by a working party consisting of himself and Councillors Bob Abbot, Frank Pardon and Tony Wellington.

They will then be taken to a general public meeting and a report and recommendations prepared for council.

Mr Playford told Noosa Today Noosa Biosphere Ltd (NBL) had been costing ratepayers $500,000 a year for six years now and “We’re not happy. We think it can achieve a lot more and that’s why we are doing what we are doing. The system we’ve got in place just now is essentially a centralised model.

“We have a group of people who are charged with doing all the things within the aims and objects of (NBL). That means it works from the top down which from my experience never works if you want the community to be heavily engaged.

“My view is we need a model that works from the bottom up. It needs to be done on the ground, at grass roots level. Anything that is up there should only be there because it is needed by the people who actually need it to be done.

“When we put together the strategic plan, the Noosa Plan, we started with a whole lot of community meetings and major questions were ‘Where do we

If you are going to change a community in any significant way, it has to come from within the community. want to go as a community in the future?’ ‘What’s your vision?’

“Back in the 90s there was a pretty commonly held view of this but I would say it is definitely far stronger now. I think it’s a question now of what we as a community do - not just council, community organisations, individuals or educational institutions - to help us to get to where we want to go.”

He said Noosa had a long history of quite a lot of organisations and individuals working towards that. “We have them going now. People like Landcare, Noosa Parks, Clean-Up Australia, Jim Berardo and the Food and Wine Festival. It’s not just the

environment. It’s about business, the local economy and what the place looks like and feels like.

“If you want to use the Biosphere Reserve declaration as a bit of a catalyst or umbrella then its main objectives fit perfectly with what Noosa is about. As Bob Abbot has said the whole Biosphere program in UNESCO could have been designed around what Noosa was becoming. A lot of us see it as a means for increasing awareness and a bit more action at the community level.

“You have a lot of people in organisations doing their significant thing and not doing it to-

gether. There are no connections.

United you get far more value out of communities. We had amalgamation and we had a centralised system set up. I’m not shooting arrows at anybody, I’m just saying that’s what happened. Even the people who were involved in deciding on that system consider it hasn’t delivered what they had hoped.

“It’s not their fault. In my opinion it was the design in the first place that wasn’t as good as it could have been. Better to get people working at the bottom together. If you are going to change a community in any significant way, it has to come from within the community.”

He said once people could see projects and initiatives going on at community level under the auspices of the Biosphere Reserve, and could measure tangible outcomes as a result, people would start to understand why the council was doing what it was doing.

Mayor Noel Playford calls them “Hazell’s Happy Heroes” and, while Allan Hazell and his team of plumbing inspectors from the council’s public services section don’t see themselves as “heroes,” Noosa ratepayers are about $48,000 better off because of the volunteer work they’ve done in their own time.

In just two weeks they have installed a new water treatment plant at the Beachfront Caravan Park on Noosa’s North Shore, putting a halt to moves to close down the park and bringing in the job at better than half the council’s budgeted $90,000.

And they’ve done it by giving up their weekends and starting their day’s work earlier.

There were lots of thanks and heartfelt handshakes all round when Mr Playford, council CEO Brett de Chastel, council holiday parks’ manager, Michelle Stirling, and this reporter met Allan and the team, Ken Woolway, Barry Postle, Craig Morley and Evan Woolway at the plant site last Thursday.

“It was a choice of closing down the park or coming up with a new system,” Allan said.

“Compared to the system we had, we have just upgraded massively.”

The story goes back to 2003 when council decided to upgrade the plant. A Sydney company quoted $780,000 for the job. We came up with a different design ourselves - yes, it was the same team and this worked quite well.

“As the caravan park grew through the years, however, the primary system struggled to keep up. Last December we knew we had to come up with something with better quality outcomes in the disposal area otherwise the park would be closed.”

Allan was quoted $180,000 for the work. “I then priced the new system myself and negotiated with the manufacturer and different companies and haggled the price down to $90,000 which was in the Council’s budget for capital works.

“We were going to put it out to tender but we scoped around with a couple of contractors, looked at the prices and thought we can do this job far cheaper and save ratepayers’ money.

“We said, ‘Let’s have a go at it’ and I did another price. We negotiated and in February we

bought all the materials. We used some of the council earth moving machinery, when it was on down time, to do the heavy digging and we used about 133 tonnes of sand to install an advanced enviro septic system.

“The guys did the work in their own time and I estimate we got the job done for $42,000.”

Allan is particularly pleased about the fence surrounding the plant. “The estimate on the fence was around $7000 and we decided to do it ourselves. To get the rails we went to our council yards and found them. Instead of them being scrapped and sent to the tip, we salvaged them, cut them ourselves and repainted them. The whole job cost $810 plus the paint.”

Mr de Chastel told the men that their level of staff commitment by working on their days off and coming in at 5am to get to the plant early before starting their normal job was “fantastic.”

“You just took responsibility, jumped in and got the job done. Our thanks doesn’t do justice to what you have done.”

The Mayor was clearly delighted with the work and, after congratulating the team, showed a previously unknown skill with the council camera as you can see by his photograph on this page.

Michelle Stirling is also Beachfront caravan park manager and she said she could foresee problems in running the park and supervising the new treatment plant at the same time. “Then the guys came and said ‘We’ll do it for you.’

“I thought it was a joke but I could see they were just rarin’ to go. They’ve done a brilliant job. They’ve even landscaped the area. I call them my ‘Plumbing Legends.’”

Jazz man plans to bring New Orleans to Noosa JIM FAGAN Wendy May from Landcare with Frances McPhee, Lyn Bollen and Barry McPhee of the Spoonbill Bushcare group

One-stop shop for volunteers It takes many hundreds of volunteer hours and hands to help restore and protect natural bushland in Noosa for us all to enjoy.

But Noosa & District Landcare’s patience has paid off, with the group securing a custom-built trailer with funds received from Energex under the Sustainability and Environment Fund.

The trailer will be used to move equipment to Noosa Bushland Care sites and comes complete with tools needed for volunteer groups to continue their valuable rehabilitation work in the local environment.

A key location to benefit from the trailer will be Spoonbill Street in Peregian Beach. The Spoonbill Bushcare group was established by Landcare in 2009, after the Spoonbillians positively responded to an act of environmental vandalism in their street in 2008.

The cloud that threatened their local environment was suddenly tinged with a silver lining as the vandalised site was restored to a more natural state over the ensuing years. The trailer will be used at Spoonbill Street for the first time this Saturday at their first Bushcare working bee for 2014.

Wendy May, Noosa & District Landcare’s Bushland Care Program Coordinator, said: “This one-stop shop will help the Bushland Carers maintain the biodiversity and amenity values of Noosa’s bushland parks and reserves. We would like to thank Terry Nodwell from Energex for helping us through the process and Spoonbill’s very own Lyn Bollen for obtaining the grant.”

She thanked the volunteers for their time, energy and passion, saying “the conservation hours contributed by these people is remarkable.”

Noosa will jump like New Orleans’ Bourbon Street on a hot Saturday night if local jazz muso Richard Stevens’ big idea comes off.

Richard is president of the notfor-profit Noosa Jazz Club which is staging The Noosa Jazz Party on September 4-7. “We want cafes and restaurants from Sunshine Beach to Tewantin to open their doors to the sound of trad jazz, blues, Chicago-style and even Gypsy music.

“Already 35 musicians - what I would call the ‘Jazz Royalty’ of Australia and overseas - have signalled they will be here. Singer Tricia Evy, who was such a hit last year, is coming from Paris to perform with Dan Barnett. Bob Barnard AM (trumpet) and multi-instrumentalist Brett Iggulden who also has the Medal of Australia for his services to jazz will head up the Australians.

“They can make up groups three, four, even a big band of seven. There are two definite starters already, the Yacht Club and the

River Deck Restaurant. There were ‘House Full’ signs every time our bands played at those places last year. If venue owners want to combine for bands to play outside on the footpath, then we will try to arrange for permits from the council.

“We started the Jazz Party in 1992 and music in the streets, in restaurants and clubs was very much a part of the collective nature of what we presented in the village.

by Noosa Today, will be the four nights at the Bicentennial Hall at Sunshine Beach

with a total of 24 sets of pure jazz - all with different styles - and the Street Parade at Sunshine Beach on the Friday morning, starting at 10am.

“We will march past the shops, into the park and play on the rotunda there and then, hopefully, into the surf club,” Richard said.

Talented line-up for TEDxNoosa Golf day for Katie Rose KoalaTracker creator Alex Harris will join a star line-up of speakers at TEDxNoosa 2014, which will be held at The J Noosa on Friday, April 4.

The founding editor and publisher of North America’s first finance and business journal for women, Alex won the Chicago Women in Publishing award in 1994 and the National Association of Women Business Owners New Venture Award in 1995.

She was the creator of the national crowd-sourced koala map, KoalaTracker.com.au, putting the location of alive, dead and injured koalas, points of impacts and causes of death and injury on the map for the

public record.

Alex holds an Australian Innovation Patent, awarded in 2002 for an online business process, and won the ESRI Australia GIS in Community award 2010.

A resident of Noosa for 12 years, Alex is today a real estate agent with Ray White Noosa River, and continues to volunteer with KoalaTracker.com. au and Bob Irwin Wildlife and Conservation Foundation Inc. Speakers also include local ABC radio personality and author Mary-Lou Stephens, renowned motivational speaker Amanda Gore, Noosa-based chef Matt Golinksi, QWeekend editor Kylie Lang and international big wave surfer Mark Visser, as well as local research-

The theme for the 2014 event is ‘SPACE’, and speakers will be exploring the topic over four carefully curated sessions – inner space, outer space, local space and global space.

While some speakers, such as Brisbane-based astrophysicist Tamara Davies, will explore the scientific mysteries of the universe, others will focus on personal and community spaces. The event will also feature a specially crafted performance by spoken word artist Ghostboy and interactive technology and displays upstairs at Innovation Alley.

Cooroy Golf Club and Cooroy Sunday Social Golf Club are holding a golf day fundraiser for the Katie Rose Cottage hospice.

The community hospice provides essential palliative care services for free to terminally ill Sunshine Coast residents.

The 18-hole golf day will be held on March 30, from 7am at the Cooroy Golf Club, where all entrants will participate in a four person Ambrose.

Food, drink, raffles and fun competitions will be held on the day and all local businesses and families are invited to support the fundraiser.

A Noosa wildlife sanctuary?

Imagine a wildlife sanctuary where Australian endangered species live and breed safely inside a protected area which has been reclaimed and regenerated after degradation as land previously used by industry or farming.

Imagine it somewhere in the Cooroy area, or Pomona maybe.

As urban development has continued to encroach on much of regional Queensland, more and more areas for our wildlife have been diminished, placing enormous stresses on many of our native species with some at risk of disappearing altogether. As a recognised biosphere we should have a commitment to protecting and preserving our wildlife from future destruction and providing opportunities for our children and visitors to observe them in a natural space.

Imagine dozens of well paid employees, as well as scientists engaged in important work to assist endangered species and working with universities to bring back to life long extinct natives of this ancient continent.

Imagine the hundreds of thousands of dollars flowing to the various stakeholders of this visionary project in surplus cash flow.

A delusional flight of fantasy, I hear you saying! Probably, but what if?

What if a suitably degraded piece of land could be identified? And what if we could convince three levels of government to support the idea, in small increments? Nothing scary!

And what if we could bring along the large number of non-government organisations who are part-government-funded to assist? Groups such as Landcare and others.

Starting out with modest ambitions as a not for profit, who knows where this may go.

As with much I have argued, this idea relies on that over exploited pronoun NOOSA. But if Noosa’s brand is going to be exploited, why not for something as worthwhile as protecting and improving the lives of indigenous wildlife, while creating a few worthwhile jobs along the way and revegetating degraded land?

Mr Johnson said the club will continue to evolve so it can continue to offer its members and guests the best surf club experience in Queensland.

“We hope to continue to use our solid financial position to make improvements to the club in the years ahead, in a way that is harmonious with our community and doesn’t eradicate the unique features and ‘open feeling’ that makes Sunshine Beach Surf Club a great place to go,” he said.

Linda was the Head of Special Education at Proserpine State High School and Kirsty was the Principal of Hayman Island State School, both very rewarding and challenging positions, so the decision to leave the security of a regular income job was not taken lightly.

“We had been tossing around the idea of getting into our own business for some time, but nothing that really appealed had presented itself,” said Linda.

“We visited Noosa a couple of times, and that at least solved the problem of where we wanted to live. So we bought a house and started looking for ventures that would suit our personalities and our ideologies,” Kirsty added.

The answer was Malu Os, providing an eco-friendly boat hire option on Noosa River.

“It fitted in well with our environmental beliefs, our desire to work near the water and we

knew that we had good skills to deal with the public. It ticked all the boxes,” Linda said.

Three electric boats arrived from Sydney, a jetty was found and business got underway.

“The one thing I always say to people when they ask us why we have done this, is that you have to have a go at following your dream, said Kirsty.

SHOW SOME GUTS Here we go again, another hit at self-funded retirees, this time regarding the Seniors Health Card. Most of us have paid huge taxes over the years and are now being penalised. Surely a little sweetener in old age is not too much to ask for as we don’t get anything else. Kevin Rudd’s Stimulus Spending Package is an example as we were excluded once again There has been no mention in the government’s study as to how many billions self-funded retirees are saving the taxpayer by not being on the age pension. There is also no mention of how many billions retired politicians are costing the taxpayer on being able to access their superannuation prior to retirement age. Therefore if Mr Hockey is saying that everything is on the table they should also be looking at their perks, which do not reflect the market conditions that the rest of the population have to endure. Let’s see some real guts from the pollies for a change.

OUT OF DATE I read with some amazement the comments

by Glen Elmes MP regarding the future of the Tewantin TAFE. He claims that the “trouble” with the campus is that it was “set up for the arts” and didn’t concentrate enough on “training for jobs”.

Before standing for Council, I spent my entire working life in the arts. I have been a home owner since I was 21 and have raised three children, all on income derived from the creative industries.

An Australia Bureau of Statistics survey conducted in 2007 found that 1.1 million Australians had received payment for culture and leisure activities, and 66 per cent of them said it was their main job. More people had paid involvement in visual art activities (281,900) than any other culture or leisure activity.

As well as providing employment, the arts also play a central role in our culture and in everyone’s lives. The arts are also an important component of community cohesion and wellbeing.

The notion that the arts don’t offer real jobs is simplistic and out-of-date. Since 2001 the number of Australians involved in cultural activities (excluding hobbyists) has increased by 52 per cent.

CALL FOR AUDIT My wife and I have been residents of Cooroy for many years and were once members of the Cooroy RSL until memberships went from $11 to $16 per year, with nothing to justify the increase. There were no incentives to stay a member such as increased members’ draws, further discounted meals or drinks - absolutely nothing. So we joined another RSL for less and get far better, cheaper meals, free entertainment, members’ incentives like free meal cards, members’ points for purchases of meals, drinks, and gaming. And, when it’s our birthday, we get multiple vouchers for free meals, drinks, and raffles.

We think it is a real travesty the way the Cooroy RSL has been managed in the past and at present. The townsfolk who cannot or do not

drive and want to be RSL members have to join the Cooroy club for convenience and are charged the highest membership fee I have ever heard for any RSL. The meals are very mediocre and pricey for what you receive. Renovations over at least the past 12 years have almost been non-existent and the only “extension” has been a small smoking deck.

The Cooroy RSL-owned Cooroy Bowls Club is now up for sale because of financial difficulties which I believe have been brought about by ineptness of the Cooroy RSL board of management. I believe an audit or enquiry into the financial management of the Cooroy RSL is long overdue for the sake of honesty and transparency to the residents of Cooroy - past, present, and future, and for the healthy survival of both the RSL and Bowls Club.

TAKE IT HOME Let’s be thankful that we still have people willing to give up their day to clean up the place they live in and the place they love. I, like many others was stunned at the amount of waste collected. I just cannot believe it.

I would like to ask those who insist on thoughtlessly and carelessly dumping their waste from car windows, on the beaches and in the parks a couple of questions.

What it was that attracted you to Noosa in the first place? What makes you come here?

Be it for a day, a week, or to live here. Is it by chance because it’s so beautiful, so friendly, so natural and pristine? Why on earth would you spoil it then? Is it really so difficult to keep your rubbish in your car and take it home, or to a bin nearby? Is it so hard to take your bigger waste to the tip? So it costs a few dollars, what’s it worth to keep your own nest clean?

Please, be part of making sure next year’s volunteers only need a small bag to collect waste. Keep Noosa beautiful for yourself and for others. And set a good example for your children. It’s for them too.

TOTALLY FUTILE I can sympathise with those well-meaning souls who are marching to call for “action on climate change”, but wonder at their ignorance of the real world. Their concerns about global warming are based on the politicised report of the discredited IPCC and its erroneous computer models that predict catastrophic global warming of one or two degrees sometime in the future. In the meantime, no school student today has lived during a period of global warming, even though carbon dioxide emissions have increased continuously during their lifetime. Even if Australia shut down all of its industries and prevented us from using electricity or driving cars, the increasing emissions by China, India, Germany, Japan among others, would make our sacrifices totally futile. Would it not be better to spend taxpayers’ money on making us more robust in coping with whatever climatic vagaries nature continues, as always, to inflict on us?

WOULD-BE MIGRANTS I refer to the letter from Dr Ivan Molloy, one that accurately notes that the boat people are neither refugees nor asylum seekers. Consider just the financial angle - they have enough cash to pay their way from the country of origin, through a number of other countries, all the way to Indonesia. And consider how much money is needed to cover all the associated costs of travel - food, drink, accommodation, the travel costs themselves and even possible replacement of clothing.

Add the costs of staying in Indonesia and then the huge costs charged by the people smugglers (we were told of $10,000 per head), and you simply have to conclude that these people are not short of money - and can not in any way be considered to be anything other than potential economic would-be migrants.

We already have a list of many thousands of potential legal migrants, approved by the UNHCR and living in camps overseas, many of them for years already.

Cooroy Originals to kick off Sunday Based on the highly successful concept of the Peregian Originals open-air concerts, the free, family friendly event will bring local talent to the stage for an afternoon of fun.

The line-up has been announced and joining local band Hayden Hack Infusion and soloist Matt Stillert are Tea Society and In2Nation.

Fresh from performing at the Noosa Festival of Surfing closing party, Tea Society will take to the stage to deliver their funky bass lines, catchy guitar and memorable vo-

cal melodies that will have you on your feet in no time, dancing the day away.

The five piece band is known for a unique blend of jazz, reggae and a whole lot of indie rock, and has just been added to the Big Pineapple Festival line-up.

In2Nation will also rock the stage this Sunday. Now a staple on the local music scene, In2Nation have been making a name for themselves as a must-see, must-enjoy live act full of funk, reggae and some awesome lyrical work from lead man Mick.

We meet every two weeks, for three hours, criticise each other’s efforts, pull our work apart, sometimes meditate, argue and laugh.

At times we are raucous and other times we’re quiet as mice. We originate from places as a diverse as Scotland, England and South Africa, Western Australia and New South Wales, and some of us have lived in very exotic places indeed. Awards have been won or lost, and related academic success achieved. So who are we – this mixed bunch of people who seek each other’s criticism, candour and honesty?

We are called simply ‘Noosa Writers’ – an enigmatic lot, now to be revealed. I count for one member of the group, and we’re passionate about writing, creating, and always, always improving. Over the years we have morphed from Noosa Scribes, with members leaving and new members joining, and have, to date, put together and published three anthologies of short stories. We test ourselves,

speed-write exercises, and question, all the time.

Disciplined to a degree, most members of the writing group produce something new for every meeting then go about dismantling and reconstructing efforts until creations close to perfection are achieved.

However, we do have one very fervent member who juggles children, husband, and running the home with writing a complete novel in just one month - occasionally! Yet, from time to time, we all suffer from the dreaded ‘writer’s block’.

Now working on a fourth joint book, most of us are also working zealously alone, writing novels or poetry. Whatever the obsession is that keeps us going we can’t really say, except to be in agreement that we’re never sure of what’s going to appear on the screen or the page until it’s there, in black and white.

However, as with any other creative art form, in order to improve you have to have a modicum of inert talent in the first place; or, as the age-old saying analogises, ‘You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink’!

Bostocks are back Award winning sibling band the Bostocks will perform at Tewantin Noosa RSL this Friday, from 8pm.

The three siblings began performing together over 15 years ago in pubs and clubs throughout rural Queensland.

From humble beginnings, the band have since been nominated for two Golden Guitar Awards, have won Instrumental of the Year at the Queensland Country Music Awards and are a regular fixture at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Melodious harmonies set this band apart as they perform original, country-pop inspired songs, while Rachel wows the crowd with her fiddle playing, Rob is on lead guitar and Sara takes care of the bass guitar that creates an electrifying country sound unique to the Bostocks.

That’s always a big call, especially considering I missed a couple of the early Noosa Malibu Classics back in the early ‘90s. But since we instigated the festival of surfing in 1998, I have never missed one, no matter where in the world I’ve been based, and I would have to say I can’t remember a better one for great waves, great weather, great vibe and a truly international cast.

With around 200 internationals coming this year, plus our first-ever live webcast on Swellnet.com taking the event around the world, I was really hoping First Point would put on its best face. When we had a nice, small swell during the middle of February I noted that the sand banks were groomed to perfection – a by-product of the long, dry summer, with no rain outfall or cyclonic north east swells to gouge out the sand. But then the surf went flat and spring weather conditions prevailed into the last week of February, with the northerly devil wind screwing the surf and bringing in the stingers.

Then behold! Two weeks out the planets began to align. A cyclone off Fiji should hold in place three smaller systems that would push trade wind swell into us throughout the period.

the computer models more or less in agreement over a big finish March 14 and 15 with a cyclonic pulse just ahead of a wind shift to the north.

And so it was. Couldn’t have scripted it much better myself. Thank you, Huey!

Our small crew works so hard during festival week that there is barely time to register the enormity of what we have undertaken – eight long days and nights of competition, novelty events and free entertainment, little sleep, loads of stress and towards the pointy end, complete exhaustion. Most events are a bit like this, but all of us at the surf festival get so swept up in the excitement of it all – from the elder statesman (that would be me) to the youngest grommet on the team (that would be Elijah) – that we push through the barriers and truly suffer only when it’s over. Which was 36 hours ago as I write this.

I’m really proud of the whole team for pulling this off again. Bigger, longer, crazier than ever, but within the team, barely a cross word, a job too hard or a deer in the headlights moment.

And over years of doing this, we’ve had all of the above.

To the winners and the lesser winners (there are no losers at Noosa), to the sponsors and the partners and the vollies and the spectators and the bloke who lived on the site all week (we never found out where) and felt there should have been a goodbye ceremony, I thank you all for being part of the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing 2014.

The Queensland apple industry is based solely on the so-called Granite Belt around Stanthorpe, on the Queensland/New South Wales border. The region is well named with clearly visible large granite outcrops and balancing boulders from the Triassic age (251205 million years old).

The area’s elevation of 800-1000 metres above sea level results in a cool summer climate, which is brilliant for growing large and juicy apples and pears.

According to Apple and Pear Australia Ltd (APAL) the national pome fruit body, in 2008 Queensland was the third largest apple producer in Australia.

The main apple varieties grown in the Granite Belt at present include Delicious Striped Red, Royal Gala, Granny Smith and Cripps Pink (marketed under the trade mark name Pink Lady).

Brekkie at Belmondos Apple and Cinnamon Spelt Muffins INGREDIENTS

¼ cup apple juice concentrate 3 whole Granny Smith apples 2 eggs lightly beaten 1 cup white spelt flour 1 cup wholemeal spelt flour 2 tsp low allergy baking powder ½ tsp cinnamon ¼ cup walnuts, chopped ¼ cup sultanas ¼ cup corn oil

Apple and Roasted Parsnip Soup

METHOD Juice the apples whole, skin and all. Reserve the pulp and the juice, and place it all in a saucepan with the concentrate over a low to medium heat for five minutes, or until stewed. Set aside to cool.

Lightly beat eggs in a bowl, and combine with the apple sauce and corn oil.

Sieve flours and combine in a bowl with baking powder and cinnamon. Add apple and egg mixture and mix until combined. Do not over mix or the mixture will become tough.

Add walnuts and sultanas, and spoon mixture into a 12-hole muffin tin. Place in a pre-heated (190 degrees Celcius) oven for 20-25 minutes, or until lightly browned and cooked through.

1kg parsnips 50g butter Extra virgin olive oil, for roasting and sautéing 2 Pink Lady apples, cored and roughly chopped 1 brown onion, chopped 300g potatoes, roughly chopped 1/2 tsp each ground ginger, cumin and nutmeg 1 tsp coriander seeds, crushed 3L vegetable stock salt and pepper to taste METHOD Peel, core and roughly chop the parsnips and place on a roasting tray. Drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil and season with sea salt.

Roast for about an hour, until crispy and golden brown.

Remove from the oven and set aside.

We decided to start off the day with the Sesame Nut Crunch Antioxidant Booster Muesli with goji, cranberries, organic apples, almond milk & coconut yoghurt. [$10.95] Neither of us had tried almond milk before and was pleasantly surprised to enjoy the subtle, nutty flavor. The coconut yoghurt really topped off the dish, adding a delicious tangy texture.

The Fraser Coast Organic Eggs with Bacon, Hinterland Tomatoes and Baby Spinach on Sol Sourdough was simply delicious and the Belmondos Tomato Chutney on the side added a real depth to this breakfast dish. At $14.95 the dish was a generous serving, too.

My friend had the Noosa River Smoke House Smoked Salmon Omelette, which was a definite stand out dish. This beautiful salmon is smoked on-site at Belmondos and was served with Organic Wild Rocket, Spinach and Organic Sourdough. [$15.95] The omelette was light and fluffy like a good omelette should be and the smoked salmon just melted.

IMAGINATION KEY TO BEATING BOOZE People who want to drink less alcohol are being urged to join a study of a newly developed treatment that has shown promising initial results on drinking and on increasing physical activity.

QUT Faculty of Health Professor David Kavanagh said his team was recruiting for the next phase of his research program testing if the new treatment—Functional Imagery Training (FIT)—helps people successfully cut down on their drinking.

“FIT harnesses the power of imagery to help people stay motivated and to resist temptation. The treatment shows people how they can use their imagination to achieve their goals,” Professor Kavanagh said.

“21 per cent of Australian adults drink alcohol at levels that put them at risk for alcohol-related illness and injury over their lifetime. People in regional and rural areas are 32 per cent more likely than urban dwellers to be drinking at high-risk levels.

“Cutting back on alcohol can be hard, and many people find they struggle to maintain their changes over time. FIT uses imagination, a tool we all already possess, to help people not just cut down, but to maintain those positive changes over time.”

The technique has previously been used by researchers at QUT to help people to quit smoking, and to stay on track to reach fitness goals.

“This study delivers FIT over the phone, so the treatment can be accessed all over Australia. Research has shown phone treatments to be just as effective as treatments delivered in person, so we’re excited to offer FIT in this novel way, enabling people all over Australia to be involved.” he said.

The treatment is free-of-charge and the study is open to anyone aged 18 and older who has more than 14 standard drinks per week, and is experiencing some problems from their drinking.

Meditation is said to be one of the best ways to de-stress. It can also be done anywhere, anytime, and does not require costly equipment.

NOOSA BOWLS CLUB Following on from the monthly Open 1500, which drew a capacity field from up and down the Coast, the concentration has been on club pairs championships. The ladies have begun playing their early rounds, while the men’s semi-finals were played last Sunday. Last year’s winners Shane Burke and Ross Ward took out a hard-fought match over Ralphe Rickman and Walter Zemler. The other semi went to previous winners Les James and Ray McComb who had a one shot win over Bob King and David Deane.

Dolphins back in action JOE JURISEVIC Yes, rugby union season is back and over 200 junior Noosa Dolphins took to the field at the weekend to blow out the cobwebs, dust off the boots and tag and tackle their hearts out in the first of three development rounds before the Easter school holidays.

The season proper may not begin until April 26, but teams are already training hard for the season ahead. New and returning registrations are always welcome and anyone interested in playing this year can attend training on Tuesdays and Thursdays for U13 and 14s, or Friday for U6s to U12s, from 4pm at Dolphin Oval.

Under 15s, 16s and Junior Colts will have a delayed start to their season to allow all play-

ers to participate in the schoolboy’s competition, played on a Wednesday night. The difficulty in trying to accommodate the

numbers to play and have the opportunity to take part in schools rugby.

A combined Noosa U15s team took part in their first game against St John’s of Nambour on Wednesday, only falling behind the strong finishing St John’s in the last few minutes after leading for most of the match.

New players are welcome if not already involved in a school team, or interested in playing rugby. Under 15s are still welcome to sign up with training at the Dolphins Club on a Monday from 4pm.

Nippers take on massive Kirra DEAN SMALLMAN Last weekend the Noosa Nipper crew headed south to Kirra on the Gold Coast for 2014 Nipper State Championships. This threeday event saw over 130 nippers and parents attend from the Noosa Nipper program and over 40 competitors undertaking both sand and water-based events.

Day one saw some great results across the sand and team events, with all age groups winning medals and stand out performances from our U11 and U12 girls. Day one is also the team’s day when nippers come together to fight it out not just against other clubs but everything mother nature had to throw at them, and boy, did she make her presence felt.

Day 2 was always going to be chal-

lenging with big tides as the full moon approached, a massive swell growing by the hour and a sweep that even made safety in the IRB questionable. With Steve Sinclair and Archie Glassock both injured in the IRB, the odd IRB flipping and kids unable to complete events as the sweep made getting around the cans almost impossible, the majority of the day for our U11-U13s was spent inside the tent as officials continually reviewed safety. At 3pm officials called off the day’s water events to the relief of everyone.

On Day 3 the predicted growing swell and winds delivered the wildest of beach conditions and the carnival was shifted to the calm waters of Currumbin Creek. Competitors were back in the water by 8.30am with the U12 & U14s finishing a shortened program by noon and the U11 & U13s taking on the afternoon heat.

It just doesn’t get any easier, does it? I thought I was on a winner this week and would have picked the round. Not to be. One thing about the NRL and that it is not predictable.

The Broncos and Cowboys game on the weekend was a beauty and full credit to the Broncos. They played very well and deserved the win.

The Manly/South’s game was also very good and you would have to be a staunch Manly supporter to back them against the Rabbitohs especially with a number of key players out. How good is that Daly Cherry-Evans? Melbourne again came back to snatch the win against a very game Penrith, while the Dragons are on fire, the Warriors have gone walk about, the Titans just stink and the Raiders may surprise a few teams this season. Anyway I have to make amends this week and here we go.

On Friday night the Broncos host the Roosters in what is arguably the match of the round. Can the Broncos continue in their rich vein of form or will the Roosters bring them back down to earth? I hope the Broncos get the chocolates but I think the Roosters maybe just too strong especially in the halves. Roosters by 2.

The other Friday night game should also be very entertaining with the Tigers hosting the Rabbitohs. A very good win by the Tigers against a very disappointing Titans, but they face a very determined Rabbitohs team bent on correcting the ledger this week. South’s by 10.

Saturday’s triple header will see the Panthers and Bulldogs battle out at Penrith and this will be a very good test for the Panthers. The Bulldogs are big and tough but then again so are the Panthers. The Panthers were impressive against Melbourne and I tip them this weekend. Panthers by 8.

The Sharks then battle the unbeaten Dragons at Shark Park and the way the Dragons are playing you just can’t tip against them. Dragons by 10.

The final Saturday game will be held in Townsville when the Cowboys take on a very disappointing Warriors. The Cowboys need to win and will be hoping the unpredictable Warriors don’t decide to play footy. Cowboys by 8.

On Sunday the Sea Eagles tackle the Eels. Can’t see the Eels getting close so Manly by 20. The other Sunday game will be in Canberra where the Raiders take on the very dysfunctional Ti-

tans. I couldn’t believe how bad the Titans played last Sunday and if they play like that against the Raiders then they may need to declare in the 60th minute. Raiders by 20.

On Monday night the Storm and Knights go head to head in Melbourne. The Knights have a good record against the Storm but I think the Storm are just too good and will win by more than 1 this week. Storm by 12. Well they are the tips for Round 3. Hope you are travelling better than I am.

Noosa Pirates A Grade travelled to Nambour this week for the tough local derby against the Crushers.

Noosa’s night started perfectly with a try to Paul Smith in the first five minutes of the game. The Pirates shot out to a 6-0 lead over the surprised Nambour side but unfortunately that would be the last points registered on the night by our young side.

Nambour has recruited well in 2014 with captain coach James Boyce and several of his team-mates from the former Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles joining the club.

This experienced showed with crushers piling on 40 unanswered points to make it a hard night at the office for the Pirates.

This game was always going to test our young

side’s depth after losing key players through injury and unavailability due to work commitments.

Captain Coach Liam Anlezark is looking to regroup after the weekend’s match. While happy with the team’s effort he was disappointed on how we fell down on the basics. Liam is looking for-

ward to a big week at training, to turn things around before this weekend’s game against the vastly improved Caloundra Sharks.

Our Reserve Grade side continued on their winning way beating Nambour 32-12. In a physical game Noosa’s large forward pack dominated

the Crushers. The Pirates back line cashed in on the well-earned field position notching up 6 tries. Captain Coach Gus Stewart praised his team for playing the whole 80 minutes. “The boys really finished the game well tonight,” Gus said. “Last week against Maroochydore we were

good in patches but never really clicked into gear.

Tonight we really improved by keeping things simple and completing our sets.”

The Reggies now sit in second place with a 3-0 start to the season. The U18s had a great win over Nambour 28-18. With only one reserve the boys showed great resolve in overcoming a much bigger side. Louis Foote, James Harrison and Hayden Trask worked tirelessly in the halves while Jake Thompson and Kyle Schefe carried the ball up in the forwards all game. Steven Kilage deserves a special mention, from the highlands of New Guinea and only 16 he proved solid and bagged himself a couple of great tries.

On Sunday the U18s kick off at 11.50am followed by reserve grade at 1.20pm and A Grade at 3pm.

Noosa Gold U7s were defeated 8-0 by Buderim Panthers but Joel Fitzgerald won Player of the Match and Montanah Ward had some great runs and nearly scored. Ty Oakley played a strong first half.

U8 Noosa Gold played Moolooaba Comets at Mudjimba in a great game with Shelby scoring a goal in the second half.

Player of the Match, with an awesome game, was Tom Holmes. Final score was 2-1 to the opposition, but the team spirit was high.

U9 Noosa Gold played Bli Bli Crusaders and won 6-4. The team played extremely well together for their first game.

Noosa Eagles U11 played Currimundi Lobsters and come away with a 3-2 win.

Player of the Match, voted by the team, went to Bailey Loenneker with special mention to Dmitri Hagicostas, who played an excellent game in defence, and to Ethan Mitchell, who was versatile and played well in all positions.

U12 Noosa Gold played Bli Bli Jousters in the second of their grading matches.

This was always going to be a challenging game as the Jousters were the A division champions in 2013, but Noosa proved what they were made of playing a superb game and making the Jousters work hard for their victory. Although going down 3-1 the whole team performed brilliantly. Jordan Gartrell scored our goal from a set up

U13s played against the Range Rebels at Montville and won 5-3.

Head Coach Phil Amson said even though Buderim loaded its defensive line, “our back line had far too much speed and class with Dale Tucker, returning from injury, and Blake Huston proving far too strong as central defenders. Our outside backs Aaron Waters and Chris Jancevski never let anything past and were also impressive in attack.”

Matt Thompson scored Noosa’s first goal after some brilliant lead up work from Davey Macrae and Tim Hollingworth. The second came from an expertly delivered free kick by Alex Barlow from the far left side of the pitch that sailed over the heads of the Buderim defenders to find an unmarked Tim Hollingworth on the far post who did the honours and nodded it home past the hapless keeper.

Noosa Outriggers continue to win JO SEARLE NOCC paddlers faced a tough challenge in the third race of the OC6 race series at Bells Beach, Clontarf, when a strong onshore wind and rough conditions resulted

in the race course being modified to a 4km triangular course with three buoy turns.

Noosa entered two Master Women’s teams in the 10km Short Course. The team comprised novices Pascale Hegarty, Susie Blumentals and Anne Courtnay – who had never tackled such conditions - plus

experienced paddlers Lisa Phelan, Jackie Irving and Val Phillips. They were the third women’s team over the line, coming first in their category. The other Master Women’s crew - Janina Wade, Tina Standish, Louise Kiernan, Lyn Mills, Sandra Kennedy and Nicky Gerrett - came fourth.

In the 16km Long Course, Noosa entered Master Men and Senior Master Men crews, and a Master Mixed team. This proved to be a hard battle in 28 knot winds and a big sea chop. Turning back towards shore for a fast run with the wind behind, the Master Men’s crew took the lead with paddles in the air and

Paul Squires masterfully steering them to victory. The Senior Master Men came in third and the Mixed Master’s second.

Lifesaver rescues lost family BETWEEN THE FLAGS RON LANE

It was a case of rescue work with a difference for Sunshine Beach Patrolman Edward Tillieard on Saturday. Patrolling Alexandria Bay in the club ATV it was bought to his attention that a family in the bush behind A Bay seemed to be in some kind of trouble.

Going to investigate he found a family of three lost, confused and

dehydrated. Worse still, one was an asthmatic and another diabetic. After calming the family down and giving water he was able to escort them to their vehicle and after a short rest they left. In isolated areas lifesavers can be confronted with anything.

Last weekend our Nippers travelled to the Gold Coast for their State Titles, which were scheduled for Kirra. However, after battling big sweeps on the Friday and Saturday the Sunday program was shifted to Currumbin Creek. With both clubs coming home with a good medal count it speaks volumes of the coaching available for our future patrol people. Now that the nipper competition season has come to the end the Noosa Club will once again be con-

ducting the Seahorse Nippers. This is the organisation that provides for children in need of some assistance with events and games. Over the last two seasons it has proved very successful. This season will start on April 26 and run from 8am till 9am on Noosa Main Beach. The sessions will continue on May 3, 10 and 17. Anyone interested in assisting is invited to an induction and training night at Noosa Surf Club on April 23 at 6pm.

It was a sad occasion when members of Noosa gathered to bid farewell to veteran member Phil Eccleston who passed away after a long illness.

Phil, a member for some 20 years, was a former patrol captain. Fellow veteran and club mate Neil Connelly summed up the man beautifully when he said, “Phil was my first Patrol Captain. He was quiet but did a great job.

Knew his stuff was fair and got on with it. We have lost a top clubman.”

We wish his family all the best.
