A SPIKE in petrol theft across Hobsons Bay has led police to unveil a new operation to crack down on false and stolen number plates.

Last week the Hobsons Bay Highway Patrol team, together with the Wyndham and Maribyrnong patrols, led the operation targeting motorist across the Westgate division, which encompasses all three municipalities.

“One of the reasons why we’re doing this is, unfortunately, there has been a spike in petrol theft,” said Sergeant Jason Van Doren.

Sgt Van Doren said the operation was part of a “two-pronged approach” to combating crime.

“There really is no filter on crime,” he said.

“Someone who steals petrol or might commit other crimes doesn’t mean they’re not committing traffic offences, too.”

Police used the Automatic Number Plate Recognition system (ANPR) to identify stolen or false plates, as well as doing licence checks.

As part of the operation a number of people flagged on the system were intercepted and interviewed in relation to the petrol thefts Sgt Van Doren said.

He said the hotspots for petrol theft were high on the radar and police would continue to work in conjunction with the stations over the coming weeks.

“I think, ultimately, a lot of our petrol theft is driven by people who are doing it no different to stealing clothes and on selling; they’re stealing because they’re thieves - they’re not stealing because they can’t afford to get to work,” he said.

“There have been really big thefts, thefts going up to thousands of dollars,” he said.

Sgt Van Doren said that the thieves would be caught and prosecuted accordingly.

“They’re doing it because they think they’re anonymous, because they’ve got stolen plates on,” Sgt Van Doren said.

“It is only a matter of time before you will come before the courts.”

Women give great legacy INSPIRATIONAL women from Hobsons Bay have been recognised for their hard work and dedication at the Hobsons Bay Inspirational Women Awards last week.

The third Inspirational Women Awards celebrated 21 women from the municipality for their positive contribution to the community.

“The awards are about honouring the achievements of women in their local communities, families and their own lives,” Hobsons Bay Mayor Sandra Wilson said.

“International Women’s Day is a celebration of the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past and present, while looking toward the work that needs to be done to create a better future.”

This year’s International

Women’s Day theme was ‘Inspiring Change’, a theme which Cr Wilson said called for vigilance in inspiring positive change, while continuing to challenge the status quo of women’s equality.

The recipients of the 2014 Inspirational Women Awards are: Annaliese Bishop, Anna Bovdis, Ida Bright, Arna Culinas-Donohue, Hue Man Dang, Charmian Gaud, Jacqueline Green, Luba Grigorovitch, Lynne Hewet, Anne Hooker, Anja PfingstlerLee, Gorica Micovski, Susan Nolan, Lee Ogden, Jenny Peace, Jennifer Stumpo, Nala Taukilo, Lyn Thomas, Bern Tripodi, Sharon Walsh and Michelle Whittingham.

Cr Wilson also acknowledged the many women across the municipality who had left their mark over the years, including Joan Elizabeth Kirner AC who became the first female Premier of Victoria in 1990.

“Tonight we acknowledge not only the recipients of this year’s award but other local women who are an inspiration to us all,” she said.

“This year’s Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year are both extraordinary females committed to supporting their community and making Hobsons Bay a better place to live.”

“Congratulations to the grandmothers, mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and members of the community who have been recognised for the positive contribution that you have made to the lives of others.”

Cr Wilson also launched the council’s Gender Equity Policy Statement which is now open for community comment.

Jason Price fills vacant Briffa seat JASON PRICE is set to replace Tony Briffa on Hobsons Bay City Council after a vote count back for the vacant position was conducted on Thursday.

The Cherry Lake Ward vacancy arose following the resignation of Cr Briffa after six years on the council.

By XAVIER SMERDON MORE than $1 million is being lost on poker machines every day in the Western Suburbs, according to the latest statistics.

Figures provided by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation showed that the West was a hot spot for problem gambling.

From August last year to January this year $197,910,013 was lost to electronic gaming machines in the West.

Brimbank was the worst of these suburbs with $387,284 lost every day while $253,471 was lost every day in Wyndham.

Hobsons Bay residents lost $133,766 every day, Melton residents lost $153,235 each day and Maribyrnong residents lost $147,838 every day.

ISIS Primary Care community support services director Michael Girolami said that problem gambling had a significant impact on local communities.

“Gambling becomes a problem when it starts to adversely impact on people’s health, wellbeing and economic relationships with friends, family and business associates,” Mr Girolami said.

“At the extreme end of the scale people may lose their homes or be imprisoned as a consequence of illegal actions they take to support their addiction.”

Police sting nabs door step grocery thieves

By YASEMIN TALAT POLICE Operation Mastitides has been successful in catching grocery thieves who were stealing home delivery produce goods from an Altona Meadows business.

Hobsons Bay Police received a number of reports of thefts from home delivery produce goods from the business between October 2013 and February 2014.

Plain clothes police teamed up with uniformed members to conduct the operation which resulted in four men being arrested and charged with theft-related offences.

Operation Mastitides was

an ongoing investigation which also resulted in search warrants being executed at local addresses and a substantial amount of stolen property being recovered.

“This was an organised group and since their arrest we have had no further thefts of this nature reported,” said Leading Senior Constable Paul Gudde of Altona North Police.

“If you are expecting items to be home delivered please make sure they are collected as soon as possible as this will help prevent you from becoming a victim of an opportunistic theft.”

A COMMUNITY program in Hobsons Bay will see two generations come together for the benefits of health and education.

Timehelp is a volunteer-based community program that connects retirees and young students from local government schools for education and well-being purposes.

National manager and founder Lisa Kingman said the program was beneficial for both the retirees and the students.

“Our volunteers help with a range of needs including classroom help, one to one reading, numeracy, kitchen gardens, lunchtime book and science clubs, helping refugee students and assisting in the library,” Ms Kingman said.

“We know schools need volunteer help and young people need positive older role models, but schools don’t have the time and resources to recruit, screen, train and match the volunteers and that is the role of Timehelp,” she said.

The program, which was made

possible through funding from the Bennelong Foundation and Hobsons Bay Council, matches retirees as volunteers to the needs of students in primary and secondary schools across Hobsons Bay. Timehelp has operated in Hobsons Bay for seven years and currently has 40 active volunteers lending a few hours each week to one of 11 schools.

Ms Kingman encouraged more volunteers to join the team and embrace the community activity.

“All we ask is that volunteers have

an interest in helping young people get a great education,” Ms Kingman said.

“We help and guide them and provide professional development,” she said.

“Schools tell us they love the regular attendance of retirees, their great attitude and the fact that many of the kids don’t have a grandparent in their life.”

No end of help

By NICOLE VALICEK AN advisory committee that will make decisions regarding the new $12 million autism school in Laverton should be established immediately, according to Western Metropolitan Region MP Bernie Finn.

In Parliament recently, Mr Finn called on Education Minister Martin Dixon to appoint the members of an advisory committee he said would be established and reporting to him.

“The minister has said he will appoint an advisory committee of local interested people to see the establishment and the running of the school,” Mr Finn said.

According to Mr Finn the committee would make “urgent decisions” regarding things like naming the school and decisions on uniforms through to its curriculum.

“Given we are fast approaching completion of building of stage one it’s important we get the advisory up and running ASAP.” Mr Finn said the advisory committee needed to start making these “urgent decisions” and to establish the school’s “culture”.

Construction started on the new $12 million P-12 autism school started in last August.

When completed, the school will cater for 140 students, have three separate buildings - early,

middle and senior years buildings - as well as specialist classrooms.

The Years 4 to 7 building for middle school students is expected to be completed midyear.

Mr Finn said the school would serve the Western Suburbs in a way it had never been served before.

“At long last we will have an education for children with autism that has long been denied them in the Western Suburbs.”

A spokesperson for Mr Dixon said: “Minister Dixon looks forward to the forthcoming announcement of the advisory committee for the Jennings St P-12 project.”

Stories inspire inclusion

By YASEMIN TALAT A NEW story time initiative has been launched across Hobsons Bay Libraries.

The first of the Hobsons Bay Libraries ‘access for all abilities’ story time sessions for 2014 rolled out last week at Altona Library.

Special guest Ann Marie Kelly and her Guide Dog Shona led the story time last Thursday helping raise awareness for vision impairment.

The theme of the stories and songs on the day was all about dogs and the children enjoyed meeting Shona at the end of the story time.

Hobsons Bay Mayor Sandra Wilson said the council was

committed to ensuring all of its services were both accessible and inclusive.

“These story times have been done in the past but this year we have grouped them into Access for All as they will cover the areas of cultural and linguistic diversity, GLBTIQ and access for all abilities,” Cr Wilson said.

“This reflects the council’s values and highlights that we welcome all to our libraries and other services whatever their ability, while also raising awareness in the community by providing story times with a difference,” she said.

Cr Wilson said the Hobsons Bay Libraries series of inclusive story times aimed to be

welcoming and open to all, and to also raise awareness and celebrate diversity and ability and encourage active participation buy all community members.

“We aim to develop partnerships with community members and this is a great way to enrich community knowledge and awareness of diversity,” she said.

There will also be a range of programs for the remainder of 2014 including: access for all story times in Auslan and one for International Day of People with Disability and bilingual story times in German, Greek and Italian.

Hobsons Bay Libraries now also have a collection of Braille picture books.

Writers unite for festival

By YASEMIN TALAT THE best writers and poets from around the Western Suburbs will be celebrated again this year at the annual Williamstown Literary Festival.

Local writers and poets are being called to enter their work for the signature aspect of the festival - the Ada Cambridge Biographical Prose Prize and the Ada Cambridge Poetry Prize, known as The Adas.

This year marks the 10th year of the writing competition, which recognises the work of writers and poets who live, work or study in the western suburbs.

Maxine Beneba Clark from Yarraville was last year’s poetry winner for her poem ‘Nothing here needs fixing’.

“Winning the 2013 Ada Cambridge Poetry Prize meant being recognised not just as a writing talent, but as a local writing talent,” Ms Clark said.

“I do think there is quite a big writing community and an artist community in the west and I guess I was interested in being recognised as part of that community.”

Maxine has published two collections of poetry, with last year’s winning poem becoming the title poem of her second poetry collection.

The collection was launched at the 2013 Melbourne Writers Festival, taking out number 13 on the top 20 Festival Best Sellers List.

She also went on to win the Premier’s Prize and later secured a publishing contract.

Ms Clark encouraged all writers and poets to enter their work, and said the feedback from the experience was invaluable.

The competition closes on Thursday 20 March and the winners will be announced at the 11th Williamstown Literary Festival which will run from 30 May to 1 June.

Health harmony

By YASEMIN TALAT STUDENTS, teachers and even parents at Altona North Primary school are gearing up for a major community event this week.

The school will combine two events on Friday 21 March, celebrating National Harmony Day and ‘Murray2Moyne’ fundraising event.

“Health and well-being and harmony have a natural cohesion together and we are running two hours of school based activities right across the whole school,” principal Brendan O’Brien said.

“It reflects strongly the harmonious multicultural nature of our school.”

The school will host a range of harmony activities during the day followed after school by a barbecue and bike education session held by the Murray2Moyne team, open for the community to attend too.

The Murray to Moyne is a 24-hour cycle relay, held on the first weekend of April, which will raise money for the school, particularly its well-being unit.

“The whole school is fundraising - we’ve got an active parents and friends group and the children will be running some fundraising activities too and the community is sponsoring the riders,” Mr O’Brien said.

Teachers, a parent and community members will be joining the riding team with Mr O’Brien, who will be taking to the tracks for the first time this year.

Passion to play

By YASEMIN TALAT YOUNG musicians and music lovers can now rejoice with the launch of Strings West.

Strings West is a newly formed music school set to inspire and educate young string instrument players across the municipality.

Popular performer and violinist Sarah Busuttil, known for her flamboyant performances with the Footscray Gypsy Orchestra, has joined forces with cello player Laura Sheridan and Viola player Silas Palmer, to encourage kids to get involved with music.

“Strings West is for young people who want to have fun with music, meet other people and reach their musical goals,” Ms Busuttil said.

Ms Busuttil herself grew up playing in string ensembles and hoped String West would provide children with the opportunity to learn perform and excel in music through also participating in ensembles and music craft.

“Students are introduced to music education in a fun creative way,” Ms Busuttil said.

“Our main goal is to inspire students to reach their musical goals by playing in an ensemble,” she said.

“Playing music in a group feels amazing, develops great technique and encourages new friendships.”

Ms Busuttil said children were encouraged to play whatever inspired them from the classics to dance, rock and pop.

Altona’s tough draw

A CLINICAL Footscray Edgewater has moved into the second round of the Victorian Premier Cricket finals series after smashing Carlton.

The Bulldogs continued their good form from the home-and-away season, dominating both days of the match to seal the 144-run win.

After losing the toss, Footscray was sent in to bat by Carlton at Mervyn Hughes Oval on day one.

The decision paid almost immediate dividends with Bulldogs opener Anthony Barton dismissed for three while the in-form Travis Dean was also back in the sheds for two.

With the score at 2/18, Dean Russ was joined at the crease by Dylan Kight and the pair set about steadying the innings.

Kight and Russ added 82 before the latter was dismissed for 61.

The wicket did nothing to unsettle Kight, who ensured the Bulldogs would post a strong total.

He combined for another vital partnership with Sunam Gautam and the scoreboard continued to tick over, passing the 150 mark.

shorts WEST Newport will be fancying its chances of claiming victory over Grand United in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf grand final this weekend. After choosing to bat first on the Greenwich Reserve wicket on Saturday, West Newport used up the best part of 106 overs to post a first innings dig of 262. Solid knocks from gloveman Aaron Floyd (61), skipper Trent Jones (60) and opener Josh Eason-Jones (46) helped set the tone for West Newport, before Grand United was given 40 overs out in the middle to begin their first innings on Sunday. Two wickets fell late in the day’s play, and with day three of the decider coming up this Saturday, Grand United will resume their run chase at 2/55. Meanwhile in the WDCA’s A Grade Matting grand final at Blackwood Reserve, the WLSC Marshalls are in a strong position against Melton Centrals after posting 289 runs over the weekend. He was well supported by Lee Elmore who made 44 and helped lift the total to 5/163 when the innings came to an end.

Werribee had 76 overs to chase down the score and the innings got off to a disastrous start.

The Tigers lost Matthew Dean, David Wolfe and Shaun Dean all

cheaply to crash to 3/23.

There was no letting up from the Altona bowlers with another wicket coming just eight runs later to leave the Tigers reeling at 4/31.

Luckily for Werribee, gun batsman Tim O’Brien remained at the crease and was a rock at one end.

O’Brien guided the Tigers through the next 40 overs to settle

the innings. He was eventually dismissed for 38 with the score at 5/85.

From there Werribee got back in control of the match, with the club moving its way to 5/124 when play was eventually called off.

In other finals results, Bayswater beat Box Hill and Oakleigh defeated Noble Park.

By LIAM TWOMEY WERRIBEE and Altona played out a thrilling draw in their Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association qualifying final on the weekend.

The result means Werribee progresses through to the competition’s semi-final because the Tigers finished higher on the ladder after the home-and-away season.

For Altona, their VSDCA season is now over.

In what looked like it had the potential to be a miss-match on paper, the top of the table Tigers met the sixth placed A’s at Chirnside Park, with Altona winning the toss and batting first.

The A’s found it tough to score throughout their first innings with the strong Werribee bowling line up producing some of the most measly spells of the season.

Heath Pritchard was outstanding, taking 4/14 from his 20 overs on day one. Pritchard’s figures also included 13 maidens.

Not to be left out, Jonathon Burton (13 overs for 12) and Matthew Thomson (14 overs for 25) were also brilliant.

Aaron Maynard was the only batsman to look comfortable against the quality bowling, fighting his way to 40 not out.

Soon after, rain stopped play on day one with Altona at 5/70.

When the match resumed on day two, Altona was on the hunt for quick runs as the A’s set about giving their bowlers a strong target to defend.

The break in play did nothing to stop Maynard, who continued to look right at home in the middle.

Thomas Smyth was the pick of the bowlers for Carlton, taking 4/82 while Ryan Sidebottom was also solid with 2/56.

After their batsmen dominated day one, it was the Footscray bowlers’ turn to take centre stage on day two.

Haberfield crushed the Carlton batting line-up, taking a stunning seven wickets for just 25 runs.

SUNSHINE United faltered in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s West B1 grand final after choosing to bat against Sunshine Heights at Walter Street Reserve on Saturday. The innings didn’t start well as Daniel Raniolo was trapped on the pads for a duck with just four runs on the board.However, with the help of opener Daniel Pace (caught and bowled for 28), United managed to steady the ship and build solid partnerships throughout the day to end day one at 7/130.

Day three of the contest will resume this Saturday. Meanwhile in the VTCA’s North A1 decider, a century from opening bat Leigh Wilson (115) has helped the Sunshine Druids into a strong position against Seddon at Hogans Road Reserve.

The Druids lasted 122 overs in the middle to post 223 runs for their first innings dig, before Seddon got its turn with the bat on Sunday to finish the second day’s play at 3/62.

THE Melbourne Knights began their National Premier Leagues campaign in strong fashion against Northcote City at home on Friday night, coming away with a thrilling 3-2 win.Six minutes in new signing Rodrigo Covarrubias got the ball rolling with his first goal for his new club, but the lead was lost a short time later. Covarrubias then doubled his tally ahead of the halftime whistle, but the match came down to the wire in the final 10 minutes. Trent Rixon equalised for Northcote City in the 81st minute but the Knights were then able to deliver the winner with a Marijan Cvitkovic tap-in. In the second-tier NPL1 competition on Sunday, St Albans began their campaign on a positive note in a 5-3 goal-fest away to the Springvale White Eagles, while crosstown rival Sunshine George Cross was a 2-0 victor over Brunswick City at Chaplin Reserve.

THE Footscray Cycling Club’s last criterium meeting for the season was held at Drake Boulevard, Altona in cool and dry conditions, with a stiff westerly which saw riders sprinting into a headwind. A Grade was dominated by an early breakaway of three, with Dom Dudkiewicz, Miles DaCosta and Brett Hickford quickly building a lead that proved to be too much for the bunch to bring back. Dudkiewicz finished the season the same way he started it by taking the win ahead of DaCosta and Hickford, with Jason Costin taking the bunch sprint.

Jets are top flight A PROMISING crop of top-age and draft-eligible Western Jets midfielders will be looking to make the right impressions in the TAC Cup this year.

Corey Ellis, Jayden Laverde, Liam Duggan and Connor Menadue have all emerged as the early frontrunners to push for a spot on an AFL list come November.

All four enjoyed a good run and played at least 11 games for the Jets as bottom-agers in the TAC Cup last year.

Coach Torin Baker is confident the experience of 12 months ago will have a positive impact on his 2014 playing group and hopes it’ll translate into success on the scoreboard after scoring 10 wins in his first year in charge.

“We were lucky enough to have a lot of bottom-age players play a reasonable portion of the year, and I think you’re learning all the time about what the requirements are at TAC Cup level,” Baker said.

“For a lot of our players, I think they’ll be better for the experience

just knowing what the level is and what they have to do to be able to perform well at the level. So that in itself is probably something that should hold a lot of the squad in good stead for the year.

“I think in terms of the results we just want to be super-competitive in every game we play and hopefully that will turn into more wins than losses for the year.”

So far five Jets have been named as part of the Vic Metro squad, with Dillon Viojo-Rainbow and Duom Dawam joining Duggan, Laverde and Ellis.

Other Jets may yet be called up as the TAC Cup season kicks into gear from this weekend.

While the obvious goal is to have some of his young charges get drafted, Baker will first be keen to see a number of Jets don the big V in this year’s under-18 national championships.

“Obviously you’d hope some players get drafted, but there’s probably a stepping stone before that and we hope that a lot of our players do get an opportunity to play in the na-

Tymms definitely the best man for the job THERE aren’t too many people more qualified than Aaron Tymms to lead the Western Region Football League into battle.

Tymms signed on as an assistant coach for the competition’s interleague side earlier this year, building on his already rich history with the league.

The Albion great played more than 400 games across his WRFL career and captained the Cats to their 2010 premiership victory.

After taking over the top coaching job at Albion in the off-season, the league wasted no time signing him up for the upcoming clash with the Southern Football League.

Tymms said he had been extremely impressed with the calibre of the WRFL squad.

“It is going to be very tough to pick our final squad,” he said.

“There are a lot of good footballers. I certainly wouldn’t mind coaching that side every week.

“You can only pick the best

squad. It will be difficult but I’m sure we will be able to put together a very strong group.”

The WRFL and SFL are currently ranked fifth and six respectively of the metropolitan football leagues, with the winner set to earn promotion into the fourth placed spot for next year.

“It is a massive reward for the guys,” Tymms said.

“I think we are in fifth spot at the moment. If we win we can get ourselves into the third and fourth group and a chance to play

The boy from Braybrook was at the height of his football powers in the mid-1980s and anyone who saw his three games in the 1985 finals series saw an artist at work. Anyone who saw him in the rooms after that heartbreaking loss to Hawthorn in the preliminary final saw that he really did bleed Red White and Blue. Doug deserves his place alongside E.J., Charlie and John Schultz the other legends of the club. Doug has always been a people person and has always given his time and attention to the people around the club especially the supporters and the football staff. I have had many great times with Doug over our 30-year friendship, he is a very special bloke and a great family man to Raelene and his three children. He is one bloke who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.

A FEW weeks back I wrote that it would be great if the Bulldogs inducted Rohan Smith to the Hall of Fame at the same time Brad Johnson. I swear I had no inside information but I was delighted when it happened last week.

The two were inseparable during their playing days and remain very close and both deserve to be rated among the greats to have worn the jumper. To play 300 games is a rare feat and a testament to courage, commitment, talent and dedication, qualities both had in spades and they are both decent, happy, well adjusted human beings. I know many people are excited to see Rohan’s son Jake follow in his father’s footsteps, as he looks very promising. The other inductee was John Jillard who played in the ’60s and was part of the 1961 Grand Final team. The Bulldogs open the 2014 season this Sunday night at 7.40pm in Perth against the Eagles.

“We were missing five players so we went in very undersized,” Radoslovic said.

“They had a couple of really massive big guys on their team so we were giving up many offensive rebounds and they were getting many second chance points.

“That gave them the early lead so we made some adjustments to our defence and just tried to neutralise their advantage there and tried to run the ball back the other way and get the game back in our tempo. And it worked.”

Altona was missing both co-captains and point guards Daniel Ellul and Daniel Martin on Sunday but the experience of playmaker Joey Mausar proved invaluable.

Mausar scored 20 points with six rebounds, while Milos Trkulja was effective at both ends of the court, collecting 13 points and 11 defensive rebounds.

“We’re an undersized, athletic team, so we need to play to our strengths,” Radoslovic said.

“At the start of the match it really came down to them having the ability to utilise their bigger, slower, more experienced team, whereas we managed to press a lot and trap a lot. We forced some good turnovers and then got some easy baskets for ourselves and it really turned the game.”

Altona will host Mildura this Sunday afternoon before embarking on a daunting five-week stretch of road games that will take the Gators to Warrnambool, Melton, Geelong, Mildura and Sunbury.

Given Radoslovic is keen to get his Gators back into the finals later this year, he said he was relieved to start the season with a ‘W’.

“To come into the game that undermanned and on the road and do whatever we could to get that win - it was a really good way to grind it out, and very relieving,” he said.

Roman blitzes field

DANIELA Roman knows how to bring her best to the big stage. The speedster blitzed the 100m hurdles to claim a gold medal at the Victorian Open Championship.

The event was held last weekend at Albert Park with Roman’s gold medal making her the only Williamstown athlete to claim a podium finish.

The next best result was Mitchell Fontaine who came fourth in the men’s long jump, with a best leap of 7.07m.
