Four-storey backlash By ALESHA CAPONE CONTROVERSIAL new guidelines allowing four-storey developments within St Albans’ CBD, Watergardens and close to Keilor Plains train station have been adopted by Brimbank City Council. Last week, the council’s administrators endorsed the State Government’s new residential zones and a modified municipal housing strategy. The council received 75 written submissions on the proposals, with 11 in favour and 64 against. Some public submissions received by the council have praised the idea of high-growth developments because they will bring more business to the area.

However, many residents have said the plans will lead to too many cars and not enough car parking, especially in the already-busy Sunshine and St Albans areas. Some of the submissions pointed out St Albans, with an estimated population increase of just 73 new residents per year, will face the most high-density development within Brimbank. Residents said this was discriminating against their suburb and will reduce living standards. “To accommodate the extra 73 people/year, BCC wants to change 1810 lots to high density living - lots with blocks of flats four storeys high,” one response said.

“It is grossly out of proportion. “Deer Park has twice the annual population increase, they have a rail station and only half the population density, yet, they have zero high density lots. “Why are the people of St Albans being treated as second class citizens?” A submission from the Keilor Historical Society also has called on the council to honour the area’s village character and not “put at risk” its heritage. The new residential scheme will introduce three new zones for Brimbank including a Neighbourhood Residential Zone,which will allow for homes with a standard maximum of two storeys. The Greater Residential Zone, to be

applied in areas around the Deer Park, Ginifer, Albion, Ardeer and Sydenham train stations plus a large part of Sunshine, will allow three storeys. The Residential Growth Zone (RGZ) will permit four storeys and apply to areas around the St Albans, Keilor Plains and Watergardens train stations. Developments of five or more dwellings in RGZs will be required to provide one visitor car space per five homes. Chair of the Brimbank administrators, John Watson, said the new residential zones ensured the municipality’s “valued suburban character” would be maintained while balancing the need for new housing.

By ALESHA CAPONE THE call’s gone out for an old-fashioned sandstone grindstone, like those used by the blacksmiths of yesteryear? Members of the Sunshine and District Historical Society want to hear from anyone who can help to track one down. Dedicated members of the society recently cleaned up an old smithy located near Barclay Reserve in Albion. The brown wooden building with a bark roof is a full-sized replica of the original smithy, which was built in 1884 and stood out the front of HV McKay’s iconic Sunshine Harvester Works from 1928 onwards. The original smithy, which was donated to the Melbourne Museum during the 1950s, is no longer on public display due to its fragile condition.

However the replica contains plenty of old-fashioned blacksmith’s equipment to give visitors a glimpse of life in the last century. The historical society’s curator Alan Dash said photographs of old blacksmith buildings show that their sandstone grindstones were often prominently displayed out the front. The Albion smithy used to have such a grindstone but it has since been stolen - much to the historical society’s dismay. “If someone could create or donate an old-fashioned sandstone grindstone, that would be awesome,” Mr Dash said. “The sandstone grindstone was pinched and we’re trying to work out how to get a new replica. “Long-term, we’re also

discussing restoration of the smithy’s roof, or else we don’t have a historical item to preserve for Sunshine. “It’s not a crisis but we will be raising funds for that in the future.” Mr Dash’s fellow historical society member Marie Zielinski said she enjoyed seeing the original HV smithy as a child. “As a kid you used to go to the museum and see the name ‘Sunshine’ and feel really proud,” she said. “I think often the current generation don’t realise Sunshine itself was involved in the first minimum wage case and how big the manufacturing industry was here.” Visit www.sunshinehistoricalsociety.org.au for more information.

Residents not sold By ALESHA CAPONE RESIDENTS have both rejoiced and raged after a momentous decision on the future of the former Sunvale school site in Sunshine was announced last week. Brimbank City Council’s administrators have voted to spend $3.025 million across two years to purchase part of the former campus, at 20 Neil St. The council plans transform to 2.03 hectares into a public open use zone. The other portion of the old school has been zoned as a residential area and will be sold off by the Department of Education and Early

Childhood Development (DEECD). Save Sunvale member John Hedditch said although residents welcomed the council’s decision to purchase part of the land, he was disappointed the entire site would not become open space. Mr Hedditch said the State Government promised to devote the entire site to open space before the last Victorian election and with Sunshine’s fast-growing population, a bigger recreation area would be needed. “Everyone agrees the whole site would be needed for Sunshine’s future,” he said. Despite the official decision on

the land, Mr Hedditch said Save Sunvale members still hoped the State Government might yet sell Brimbank City Council the entire plot at an affordable price. Mr Hedditch said another option discussed during negotiations would be for the Government to gift the land to council. “We’re looking to the State Government to go and put some of the options to council before they (the Government and DEECD) try to sell it under our nose,” he said. The former Sunvale principal, Alan Dash, said he welcomed the council’s decision but would have preferred the entire site to be re-

tained for the community. “It’s great that council decided to improve the amenity of Sunshine with a public park,” he said. “It would have been nice to see the whole area as a park, but it’s a bold step forward.” A spokesperson for the Education Minister Martin Dixon has said the DEECD decision to sell part of Sunvale was in accordance with government requirements. They said proceeds would be “prioritised towards creating, maintaining, improving and extending assets that are core to current or future service delivery, including educational provision”.

ENGINES will be revving as hundreds of car owners and enthusiasts steer to one of Brimbank’s biggest car shows next weekend. The fifth annual Car & Bike Show to Fight Cancer, organised by Deer Park business Independent Car Parts, will be held at Club Italia in Sunshine on Sunday 23 March. Independent Car Parts Director Mehmet Islay said more than 400 cars were already registered to be showcased.

The event is one Mr Islay holds close to his heart, as it combines two major aspects of his life - cars and charity. All proceeds will be donated to the Peter Mac Cancer Foundation, with more than $30,000 already raised from previous shows. Seven years ago Mr Islay’s mother Ayten lost her battle to cancer. During her battle she stayed at Peter Mac where Mr Islay said she received great support. “This is our way of saying ‘thank you for looking after our mum and

making her last days with us comfortable’,” Mr Islay said. This year Mr Islay hoped to raise $20,000 with the help and support of his family, friends and the community. “The way I look at it is, in life you can’t always take and take you have to give as well,” Mr Islay said. “This is my way of giving back to the community and people in need.” Mr Islay said the fund-raising tribute to his mother also celebrated her generous nature.

“For me it’s very emotional from the moment I turn up and see all the cars I get goosebumps and I get very teary because it reminds me of why I’m doing this,” he said. “If mum was here she would be very proud. “And it’s not only for her but for all those who are suffering and battling through cancer.” There will be an array of cars on display from classics to race cars as well as food stalls and entertainment. It is expected that his input and experience will put Council in an even stronger position to continue to build community capacity and deliver needed capital projects in preparation for the return of Councillors.

Since the administration at Council began in 2009 community sentiment and satisfaction with Brimbank Council has increased and there is a strong ongoing commitment to making a better Brimbank.

Just last week Council was pleased to announce that the larger part of the former Sunvale Primary School in Sunshine will become a public park following Council purchasing the land from the State Government. Council will be establishing a new 1.1 hectare park on part of the former Sunvale Primary site. In relative terms this new park will be roughly two thirds the size of nearby Kevin Wheelahan Gardens. The new open space will add to Council’s extensive park network demonstrating the commitment to creating better parks for our community.

The Sunshine community have long rallied for the former primary school site to be returned to the community and Brimbank City Council has been working hard behind the scenes for some time to help achieve this goal. Once the park is constructed, there will be ample room to relax and enjoy time spent outdoors with friends, family and neighbours and to take time out from the hustle and bustle of urban living. Raingardens to clean stormwater runof Brimbank City Council has just completed installing eight new raingardens along the residential nature strips in Victor Street, Sunshine North. The raingardens include plants such as reeds, rushes and lomandras, which work to take out heavy metals and other pollutants from the rainwater runof in your street. A raingarden works like a ilter and is designed to trap large pieces of litter on the surface and iner pollutants deeper in the garden. The root systems of these plants ilter excess nutrients and chemicals, cleaning the water that runs from your streets, car parks and roofs into the stormwater drains. This in turn means water is cleaner when it enters our creeks, rivers and ultimately our bays. Raingardens also create a green micro-environment and take pollutants out of the air.

Justice Connect will run a ‘Setting Up and Running a Community Group or Organisation’ session this month. The session will simplify key legal issues for the not-for-proit sector. Sunshine could be the future home to ‘Man Lifting a Cow’ a large sculpture by internationally renowned artist John Kelly, who also happened to grow up in the suburb. This artwork would be a major coup for Brimbank and would help establish Sunshine and the greater Brimbank area as a centre of artistic creativity in Melbourne’s west. Council is in the process of seeking funding opportunities including grants and philanthropic backing for this important public art project.

However, the Melbourne Airport Noise Abatement Committee report from February this year said the early turns have been mostly attributed to weather - such as avoiding storms for safety reasons. One Keilor resident has told Star she believes the complaint figures being passed onto bodies such as the Noise Abatement Committee could be under-representing the noise problem. Airservices Australia records the names of people who get in touch about noise issues, rather than listing the total number of notifications, in an effort to reduce the impact of serial complainers. However, an Airservices Australia spokesperson said they encouraged feedback on all new topics.

PILOTS at Melbourne Airport have been warned to try and avoid turning early while flying over Keilor and St Albans, following resident protests. Brimbank suburbs lodged almost 60 complaints and queries about airport noise with Airservices Australia between October to December 2013. Keilor accounted for more than 30 noise notifications, followed by St Albans on four and Deer Park, Kealba, Keilor Park and Sunshine notching up three each. The latest report from Airservices Australia said most of the complaints from Keilor and St Albans were about aircraft turning early to the west after departing Melbourne Airport’s Runway 16. The report said the issue is being investigated and has been

WOMEN in the West are a lot less likely to smoke while pregnant when compared to their peers across the state, according to new figures from the Department of Health. A report released last week showed how many females in Victorian hospitals smoked during pregnancy before 20 weeks gestation. In 2011, less than 15 per cent of women who attended Sunshine Hospital reported smoking during this period. At the Mercy Werribee Public Hospital, just 10 per cent of women continued using ciga-

rettes at 20 months pregnant. The data from the two hospitals puts the number of smoking mothers from the West in the bottom 25 per cent for Victoria. In comparison, more than 35 per cent of women at the Maryborough District Health Service and 25 per cent at Frankston Hospital smoked until the 20 weeks gestation cut-off. After this period, less than five per cent of pregnant women at the Sunshine and Werribee hospitals continued smoking. In Maryborough, more than 20 per cent of future mothers continued smoking after 20 weeks.

According to Quit Victoria, chemicals from smoking such as nicotine and carbon monoxide can cause problems during pregnancy. Carbon monoxide reduces the ability of the foetus to carry oxygen, while nicotine raises foetal blood pressure and affects the baby’s ability to practise breathing. Literature from Quit Victoria also said mothers who smoked were one third more likely to have a baby that was born prematurely, three times more likely to have an infant die from SIDS and an increased risk of stillbirth and miscarriage.

Losing weight LOSE weight by volunteering for a study on obesity and hunger control. Volunteers are sought to participate in a research study conducted at Victoria University. The study is investigating the effect of two herbal supplements on obesity and hunger control. Tests to be conducted include body composition measurements, blood pressure, monitoring of physical activity and food intake, medical questionnaires, cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels. To be eligible for the study you must be overweight (Body mass index >25 or waist circumference >94cm for males/ >80cm for females) and between 20-60 years of age and a non-smoker. Cars star at club show CLUB Italia Sporting Club is gearing up to host a car show this month for a special cause. It will be one of the most anticipated events in the club’s calendar on 23 March at the club. This will raise money for Peter MacCallum Foundation and will feature food stalls, live entertainment and fun for the whole family as well as an array of cars on display. The club offers an a la carte bistro, car and function rooms, training and playing facilities for Brimbank Stallions, juniors and seniors. Gaming manager Des Barnard says the club is in the process of introducing TAB and Keno

facilities to become the complete entertainment package. Free bingo is offered on Tuesday and Thursday, regular sessions are on Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Gunning for their third consecutive flag, the Cougars’ attack was taken to task by a rampant Pascoe Vale Central batting line-up led by skipper Cameron Hare, who knocked 118 runs on Saturday. In quality batting conditions at Gladstone Park’s Jack Ginifer Reserve, Pascoe Vale Central set itself up for victory after choosing to bat first - setting Kealba the formidable task of chasing down 7/282 on Sunday. The chase never really got going for the defending champions, lasting 63.3 overs before Pascoe Vale Central broke through against its grand final nemesis of recent years. The Cougars could only muster 155 in response. Captain-coach Evan Long remained upbeat afterward, telling Star his side should be proud not only of the efforts this summer, but those of the past three years. “We’re obviously disappointed about the weekend and obviously you put a lot of time and effort into trying to win the premiership but it just wasn’t our weekend,” Long said. “I think the boys can be proud of what they achieved during the year and definitely how they held themselves during the year, and it was a pretty tough day yesterday with them scoring 282. “It was a pretty tough day in the field but like I said, I’m proud of every one of them.” In a moment of madness that seemed to denote Kealba’s fall off the Luscombe Shield perch, Tristan

WEST Newport will be fancying its chances of claiming victory over Grand United in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf grand final this weekend. After choosing to bat first on the Greenwich Reserve wicket on Saturday, West Newport used up the best part of 106 overs to post a first innings dig of 262. Solid knocks from gloveman Aaron Floyd (61), skipper Trent Jones (60) and opener Josh Eason-Jones (46) helped set the tone for West Newport, before Grand United was given 40 overs out in the middle to begin their first innings on Sunday. Two wickets fell late in the day’s play, and with day three of the decider coming up this Saturday, Grand United will resume their run chase at 2/55. Meanwhile in the WDCA’s A Grade Matting grand final at Blackwood Reserve, the WLSC Marshalls are in a strong position against Melton Centrals after posting 289 runs over the weekend. Though the incident was somewhat innocuous, Long said it had a lasting effect on the psyche of his side during the doomed run chase.

“You can’t just put it down to one thing but it was just one of those freak things and the confidence and the belief was waning a bit,” Long explained. “It changed the complex of the game and you can’t take away any-

thing from Pacco being the dominant team on the day. “But when you’re in those run chases you need a lot of luck to go your way and that moment in particular showed that the luck certainly was on their side and not ours.”

A CLINICAL Footscray Edgewater has moved into the second round of the Victorian Premier Cricket finals series after smashing Carlton. The Bulldogs continued their good form from the home-and-away season, dominating both days of the match to seal the 144-run win. After losing the toss, Footscray was sent in to bat by Carlton at Mervyn Hughes Oval on day one. The decision paid almost immediate dividends with Bulldogs opener Anthony Barton dismissed for three while the in-form Travis Dean was also back in the sheds for two. With the score at 2/18, Dean Russ was joined at the crease by Dylan Kight and the pair set about steadying the innings. Kight and Russ added

82 before the latter was dismissed for 61. The wicket did nothing to unsettle Kight, who ensured the Bulldogs would post a strong total. He combined for another vital partnership with Sunam Gautam and the scoreboard continued to tick over, passing the 150 mark. Kight was eventually dismissed for a classy 66, the top score of the Footscray innings. There was no letting up from the Footscray lower order as the total continued to rise. Gautam (41), Guy Walker (10), Jake Haberfield (17), Hamish Winter-Irving (21) and Lucas Dredge (10) all did their bit to lift the score to 9/252 after 100 overs. Thomas Smyth was the pick of the bowlers for Carlton, taking 4/82 while Ryan Sidebottom was also solid with 2/56.

After their batsmen dominated day one, it was the Footscray bowlers’ turn to take centre stage on day two. They were led by the always dangerous Jake Haberfield who was nothing short of outstanding. Haberfield crushed the Carlton batting line-up, taking a stunning seven wickets for just 25 runs. The gun quick removed seven of Carlton’s top nine batsmen in what was his second seven-wicket haul of the season. With only three of the Blues’ batsmen making it to double figures, the target of 253 was never in danger as Footscray cruised to the victory. In other Premier Cricket finals results, St Kilda defeated Prahran, Essendon beat Ringwood while Geelong progressed to the next round after drawing with Melbourne.

SUNSHINE United faltered in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s West B1 grand final after choosing to bat against Sunshine Heights at Walter Street Reserve on Saturday. The innings didn’t start well as Daniel Raniolo was trapped on the pads for a duck with just four runs on the board. However, with the help of opener Daniel Pace (caught and bowled for 28), United managed to steady the ship and build solid partnerships throughout the day to end day one at 7/130. Day three of the contest will resume this Saturday. Meanwhile in the VTCA’s North A1 decider, a century from opening bat Leigh Wilson (115) has helped the Sunshine Druids into a strong position against Seddon at Hogans Road Reserve. The Druids lasted 122 overs in the middle to post 223 runs for their first innings dig, before Seddon got its turn with the bat on Sunday to finish the second day’s play at 3/62. THE Melbourne Knights began their National Premier Leagues campaign in strong fashion against Northcote City at home on Friday night, coming away with a thrilling 3-2 win. Six minutes in new signing Rodrigo Covarrubias got the ball rolling with his first goal for his new club, but the lead was lost a short time later. Covarrubias then doubled his tally ahead of the halftime whistle, but the match came down to the wire in the final 10 minutes. Trent Rixon equalised for Northcote City in the 81st minute but the Knights were then able to deliver the winner with a Marijan Cvitkovic tap-in. THE Footscray Cycling Club’s last criterium meeting for the season was held at Drake Boulevard, Altona in cool and dry conditions, with a stiff westerly which saw riders sprinting into a headwind. A Grade was dominated by an early breakaway of three, with Dom Dudkiewicz, Miles DaCosta and Brett Hickford quickly building a lead that proved to be too much for the bunch to bring back. Dudkiewicz finished the season the same way he started it by taking the win ahead of DaCosta and Hickford, with Jason Costin taking the bunch sprint.

Jets are top flight A PROMISING crop of top-age and draft-eligible Western Jets midfielders will be looking to make the right impressions in the TAC Cup this year. Corey Ellis, Jayden Laverde, Liam Duggan and Connor Menadue have all emerged as the early frontrunners to push for a spot on an AFL list come November. All four enjoyed a good run and played at least 11 games for the Jets as bottom-agers in the TAC Cup last year. Coach Torin Baker is confident the experience of 12 months ago will have a positive impact on his 2014 playing group and hopes it’ll translate into success on the scoreboard after scoring 10 wins in his first year in charge. “We were lucky enough to have a lot of bottom-age players play a reasonable portion of the year, and I think

you’re learning all the time about what the requirements are at TAC Cup level,” Baker said. “For a lot of our players, I think they’ll be better for the experience just knowing what the level is and what they have to do to be able to perform well at the level. So that in itself is probably something that should hold a lot of the squad in good stead for the year. “I think in terms of the results we just want to be super-competitive in every game we play and hopefully that will turn into more wins than losses for the year.” So far five Jets have been named as part of the Vic Metro squad, with Dillon Viojo-Rainbow and Duom Dawam joining Duggan, Laverde and Ellis. Other Jets may yet be called up as the TAC Cup season kicks into gear from this weekend.

The Hoppers Crossing product was almost unanimously picked for the role, and Baker is “super-excited” to have the 17-year-old as his on-field leader. “He’s a very natural leader and he just lives and breathes the organisation values and really drives the players to be better,” Baker said. “He’s a high quality person so he was quite an easy choice as captain.”

“I think we are in fifth spot at the moment. If we win we can get ourselves into the third and fourth group and a chance to play off for one or two the year after. “The boys are all very keen. If you play well on the day there is the chance to play for the Vic Metro side as well.” The interleague carnival will take place on Saturday 29 March at Visy Park. Also on the day, the Northern Football League and Essendon District Football League will square off while the Victorian Amateur Football League and Eastern Football League will go toe-to-toe for the number one ranking.

THERE have been some interesting clearances, with North Footscray resembling Hoppers from a few years ago with names like Clonan, Cavka, Borlase, Walsh, Hollingsworth and Iordanis lining up. West Footscray has done well with names like Michael Kennedy, Liossis, El Houli, Storey, Lindsey plus Damien Yze and Ryan McGhie giving them some real depth. Congratulations to Jason Cloke on being named captain of the WRFL interleague team with Tim Jenkins and Jordan Robbins vice-captains. Jason has been terrific since joining Spotswood and is a very good choice.

Lara Cricket is looking for a Playing Coach or Professional player for the 2014/15 season. Lara plays in the Geelong Cricket Association Div 1. Remuneration is negotiable but will depend on qualifications and experience.

DOUG Hawkins is now officially a Bulldogs Legend, as if there was ever any doubt. The boy from Braybrook was at the height of his football powers in the mid-1980s and anyone who saw his three games in the 1985 finals series saw an artist at work. Anyone who saw him in the rooms after that heartbreaking loss to Hawthorn in the preliminary final saw that he really did bleed Red White and Blue. Doug deserves his place alongside E.J., Charlie and John Schultz the other legends of the club. Doug has always been a people person and has always given his time and attention to the people around the club especially the supporters and the football staff. I have had many great times with Doug over our 30-year friendship, he is a very special bloke and a great family man to Raelene and his three children. He is one bloke who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.

HOPPERS Crossing Football Club will be hosting the Good Friday Gift as part of its big clash with St Albans on Friday 18 April. The sprint will involve all WRFL clubs nominating one runner for the 100-metre race. Clubs will be asked to pay an optional entry fee of $20, which like all money collected on the day will go to the Royal Childrens’ Hospital Appeal. THERE aren’t too many people more qualified than Aaron Tymms to lead the Western Region Football League into battle. Tymms signed on as an assistant coach for the competition’s interleague side earlier this year, building on his already rich history with the league. The Albion great played more than 400 games across his WRFL career and captained the Cats to their 2010 premiership victory. After taking over the top coaching job at Albion in the off-season, the league wasted no time signing him up for the upcoming clash with the Southern Football League.

Tymms said he had been extremely impressed with the calibre of the WRFL squad. “It is going to be very tough to pick our final squad,” he said. “There are a lot of good footballers. I certainly wouldn’t mind coaching that side every week. “You can only pick the best squad. It will be difficult but I’m sure we will be able to put together a very strong group.” The WRFL and SFL are currently ranked fifth and six respectively of the metropolitan football leagues, with the winner set to earn promotion into the fourth placed spot for next year. “It is a massive reward for the guys,” Tymms said.

It’s official, he’s a legend

A FEW weeks back I wrote that it would be great if the Bulldogs inducted Rohan Smith to the Hall of Fame at the same time Brad Johnson. I swear I had no inside information but I was delighted when it happened last week. The two were inseparable during their playing days and remain very close and both deserve to be rated among the greats to have worn the jumper. To play 300 games is a rare feat and a testament to courage, commitment, talent and dedication, qualities both had in spades and they are both decent, happy, well adjusted human beings. I know many people are excited to see Rohan’s son Jake follow in his father’s footsteps, as he looks very promising. The other inductee was John Jillard who played in the ’60s and was part of the 1961 Grand Final team. The Bulldogs open the 2014 season this Sunday night at 7.40pm in Perth against the Eagles.
