Persimmons are pure pleasure ONE of many beautiful things about persimmons is that they ripen at the same time as the tree erupts into its glorious autumn display of reds, oranges and yellows. They are the quintessential autumn fruit!

Another, is that they are becoming more available either from the farmgate, or the supermarket shelf, making right now a great time to discover the natural sweetness either as a fresh fruit or in sweet or savoury recipes.

Persimmons Australia has lots of tantalising recipes including the Lime Poached Persimmons with White Chocolate Mousse and the Persimmon Thai Beef Salad, a great introduction to this beautiful, but little known, fruit to Yarra Valley kitchens.

Lime Poached Persimmons with White Chocolate Mousse What you need: 4 Sweet persimmons, peeled and sliced 1 lime, zest and juice, 1 knob of ginger, peeled, 1 star anise 1 cup of sugar 1 cup of water 200g white chocolate 3 eggs 200ml cream 1 tbsp of sugar 1 tsp vanilla essence 1 pinch of salt

What to do: Add sugar to water, add ginger, star anise, lime juice and zest to create syrup for poaching and bring to the boil.

Add persimmons slices to syrup, bring back to boil, turn off the heat and set aside to cool.

Once cold place into the refrigerator.

Place a saucepan half-filled with water onto medium heat and place a heat-resistant glass bowl on top of the saucepan.

Add chocolate to the bowl and slowly melt.

Separate the egg whites and yolks in separate bowls.

Add sugar and vanilla essence to the egg yolks and whisk until pale in colour.

In a separate bowl, whip the cream.

Whisk the egg whites, when almost stiff add salt.

Remove the chocolate bowl from the saucepan and gradually add the egg yolk mixture, making it fairly firm.

Gradually fold in the cream and then gently fold in the egg white.Place mixture into the refrigerator and chill for at least two hours or until mousse is firm.

Place persimmons onto a plate, top with a generous dollop of white chocolate mousse and garnish with lime zest.

Serving size: Serves 4 Cooking time: Less than 30 minutes

Persimmon Thai Beef Salad What you need: Salad: 250gms fillet steak, trimmed 1 persimmon, peeled and julienned 1 cup coriander leaves 1 cup mint leaves 1/2 cup thai basil leaves 2 shallots, finely sliced 1 long red chilli, seeded and shredded Dressing: 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 teaspoon caster sugar 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice 2 tablespoons fish sauce What to do: Brush beef with a little oil and barbecue, pan fry or grill until cooked to your liking, 2-3 minutes each side will be medium. Set aside to rest for 5 minutes, slice thinly.

In a large bowl gently toss all salad ingredients.

To make the dressing, combine all ingredients in a screwtop jar and shake until the sugar has dissolved.

Combine beef with salad, drizzle with dressing, serve immediately.

Choosing the fruit Selection: Choose persimmons that are smooth, plump, glossy and wellrounded and with their calyx still attached. The fruit can range in colour from a pale orange to a deep red-orange, depending upon variety and stage of the season. Fruit with surface blemishes are fine to eat as flavour and eating quality is unaffected.

Storing: After removing the leaves, prepare the persimmon by slicing the fruit or cutting it into quarters. Despite being firm to the touch, handle persimmons with care as the thin skin is delicate and bruises easily. Sweet persimmons that have gone soft are perfect for use in cooking but they must be handled gently. When ripe, persimmons should be stored on their own, out of the fridge.

A feast for the eyes

By KATH GANNAWAY RUSSELL Sebire’s family always had a persimmon tree on their property.

They had a mulberry tree, walnut, camellia and lemon tree too.

“All the old folks had these trees, but they never sold the persimmons then,” he said, weighing up a box of the brilliant burnt-orange fruit for Asian visitors from Melbourne who come up every year to pick and purchase the fruit from his Wandin property.

Mr Sebire was the first in the valley to plant an orchard of the fruit which originated in China and has been grown in Southeast Asia for thousands of years.

He was way ahead of his time, even on a national level.

“I put them in 40 years ago when we first moved into the house, and that was on the first

day of 1970,” he says.

Persimmons Australia records the early ’80s as the time when the ‘exotic’ fruit was first grown on a commercial scale.

His venture is not on a huge commercial scale, in fact he calls the block of fruit trees more of a ‘patch’ rather than an orchard.

The idea to plant persimmons went back to his childhood when he says he used to pick them and sell them at the market.

“The old folk used to eat them. A lot of people didn’t know them at all and a lot of people still don’t, or that they have to be dead right to eat them,” he said.

“There are two types and the soft ones you have to eat when they are almost a jelly texture inside, while the other one is a harder texture.”

Migrants have led the way in the growing demand for persimmons and they have always been happy to make their way to Wandin for an autumn treat.

“Italian people have a liking for the soft variety and the hard variety is popular with Asian people,” Mr Sebire has observed over the years.

Walking through the patch, Mr Sebire said it had not only been a good year for the fruit, but for the autumn leaves.

“Some varieties colour up better than others. It depends on how the weather has been and it varies from year to year. It’s been a good year for colour,” he said.

As a package, whether you’re picking and packing, or just driving past, the gloriously coloured Sebire persimmon patch is a feast for the eyes.

SENSATIONAL AUTUMN SAVINGS

TURNING autumn leaves into a rich, beautiful soil additive is so much better than turning them into a layer of smoke - and it’s easy to do, even if you don’t have a lot of space.

Fill two or three sturdy garbage bags with a mix of leaves and grass clippings, layering them until the bags are full. Toss in a handful of cow manure and mix it all up a bit.

If you can get your hands on some comfrey, shred a couple of handfuls and mix it in to help with decomposition.

Chopping up the leaves with a mower, or a leaf shredder also moves things along a bit quicker. Compress the leaves firmly and add half a bucket of water.

Punch a few air holes in the bag with a screwdriver and tie the top firmly.

Place the bags in an ‘out of sight’ spot in the yard and turn them every two months or so until spring when you will have a rich, crumbly, organic compost ready to add to your spring garden beds.

Best of all, your neighbours will love the fact that you didn’t smoke them out last autumn!

Salad days

By KATH GANNAWAY SALAD days are far from over, according to Yarra Valley ECOSS horticulturist Matt Daniele.

Salad greens are among the list of seedlings Matt says can be planted in the vegie garden now that autumn has arrived.

Also on his ‘plant now’ list are cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, leeks, coriander, dill, lettuce, Asian greens, Bok Choi, beets, turnips, radishes

and celery. It’s not too late either to sprinkle some seeds for vegetables including beetroot, spinach, dill, Asian greens and the last flush of carrots and potatoes.

Seedlings are available from the ECOSS edible plants nursery at 711 Old Warburton Highway, Wesburn on any Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

WITH the cooler months soon to be upon us, chestnut season in the hills will heat up.

Running for over 30 years is the Kalorama Chestnut Festival, which celebrates all things chestnuts and community.

Organised every year by a team of volunteers from the Mount Dandenong Pre-school, event co-ordinator Shauna King said it was the preschool’s main fund-raiser for the year.

“The Kalorama Chestnut Festival is the Dandenong Ranges’ biggest community gathering that is held on the first Sunday of every May,” she said.

“It showcases the chestnut and is run off community donations and support.

“Each year we have anywhere between 70 to 100 stalls and around 2500 to 3000 events attendees.”

Chestnuts have been grown in Australia for over 100 years, with the first recorded plantings of the tree in the 1850s and 1860s.

According to Chestnuts Australia, it is widely believed that the first chestnut trees were brought to Australia by the Chinese.

The Kalorama Chestnut Festival started as a ‘chestnut roast’ within the pre-school grounds at Mount Dandenong and has grown into a major event in the area through the collaboration of preschool parents and the community.

“We are living in an area that has quite a lot of growth of the chestnut,” Ms King said.

“There is a long rich history of selling chestnuts from the kindergarten, which has grown into a beast of its own with the festival.”

The Kalorama Chestnut Festival is on Sunday 4 May from 10am to 4pm at Kalorama Reserve.

ARDEN -THE SINGING GARDENS OF C.J. DENNIS - TOOLANGI The Singing Gardens (1935), was inspired by poet C.J. Dennis’s garden at Toolangi. Although the house burned down in the 1960s, the garden Dennis created with his wife remains. WILDLIFE protection and cat welfare groups have applauded new 24-hour cat containment laws across Yarra Ranges.

But, as news spread of the vote

by Yarra Ranges Council to make it mandatory for cats to be kept on their owner’s property 24/7, the fur is flying on social media between wildlife advocates, cat owners who support the move and cat owners who say it is unnecessary and unenforceable.

The cat curfew was endorsed unanimously by Yarra Ranges councillors, based on community consultation which identified concerns about cats allowed to wander.

Those concerns were about environmental and amenity issues with the preference for a 24-hour curfew outnumbering a night-time curfew only by 135 to 91, with eight responses not in favour of any curfew.

The Sherbrooke Lyrebird Survey Group is among the strongest supporters for the new rules, saying cats are wreaking havoc on lyrebirds and other wildlife in Sherbrooke Forest and across the hills region.

Former National Park ranges and SLSG president John Lloyd said domestic and feral cats were responsible for killing not only birds but also reptiles and small marsupials.

Menzies Creek resident Anita Walker contacted the Mail saying she was excited that the councillors had had the courage to pass a much-needed law.

While her main concern is wildlife, she said cat-owners should have the same responsibilities as other pet owners.

Gluten allergy hits home hard

Giving students have big hearts STUDENTS at Silvan Primary School have taken a personal interest in the story of a tiny baby who tragically died of congenital heart disease.

The Junior School Council (JSC) recently organised a cake stall to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Finnan’s Gift Appeal, which aims to raise funds for research into the causes and treatment of heart disease in children.

Finnan, who was the son of champion aerial skier Alyssa Camplin, died at just 10 days old in 2011 of congenital heart failure.

“Some babies are born with holes in their hearts and other problems,

and so we thought we would try to help them,” Coby, a JSC representative, said.

Coby and his fellow Junior School Councillors made and sold cupcakes, raising $60 to send to the hospital - a great result for a school with only 34 students.

The Junior School Council is planning a number of fun and educational events for the rest of the students.

“The students have decided that their next major fund-raiser will have an environmental focus and will help support the habitats of endangered species,” Luda Prokopiwskyi, JSC teacher, said.

THOUSANDS of Australians are unaware that they suffer from coeliac disease.

Upper Ferntree Gully resident Christine Elder-Lane spent a considerable part of her life unaware that she suffered from the disease until doctors, based on the symptoms of fatigue and depression, diagnosed her.

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease where people experience an abnormal reaction in their small intestines when they consume gluten.

Ms Elder-Lane said before she was diagnosed she felt very scared and upset to think what was wrong with her.

“I could not work like other people and I was in bed by 7.30pm most nights as I was just so exhausted and unwell,” she said.

“Eventually, I was sent to a physician who told me I could only work two or three days a week as he believed I was doing too much. There was nothing conclusive with his tests, and so I worked the two days a week for a few years still experiencing the symptoms,” she said.

The mother of four then suddenly lost her first husband to a heart attack when she was just 41 years of age and had to return to full-time work.

“Some work colleagues just did not understand my fatigue - I was judged harshly,” she said.

“It wasn’t until I was at the peak of the illness that I was sent to a gastroenterologist who performed a small bowel biopsy and called me a week later, asking ‘did you know you have coeliac disease?’.”

Coeliac Australia technical officer, Accredited Practising Dietician Penny Dellsperger said there was considerable number suffering from the disease and that she was concerned that not enough testing for the condition was being performed in general practice.

“Patients are presenting with symptoms of coeliac disease, but the root

cause of the problem is not being picked up,” she said.

“There are particularly low rates of detection in men - making up only one third of tests. It is heartening however to see that once someone is diagnosed their quality of life improves and their risk of long term health problems diminish.”

Coeliac Awareness Week ends on Friday 20 March and highlights the importance of diagnosing coeliac disease with the theme ‘Sick and tired of feeling sick and tired’.

Along the walk, Yarra Ranges mayor Fiona McAllister said the success of the walk around Yarra Glen was the catalyst of the walk around Tecoma.

“It’s wonderful to be able to meet with traders and get some insight into local issues and opportunities,” she said.

“It’s great all the different community groups have come together on this too.”

Hairdresser and shopkeeper Craig Skeates said it was important for the future of Tecoma that the area was invigorated.

“We need to get people to shop in town, not drive straight through to Belgrave,” Mr Skeates said.

“It’s time Tecoma gets an upgrade.”

Last week, traders walked councillors and council staff around their town highlighting some things that needed work or a bit of a revamp.

Tecoma Traders Association president Karen Rook said the walk around was a great opportunity to see the community work together rather than just separate groups.

“We’ve all had some ideas, and shared them with council staff - the idea is to get it all down on paper and have a plan for our town,” she said.

“We don’t want Tecoma to be the town people drive past to get to Upwey or Belgrave - we want people to stop in our town, shop here and eat here.”

She said the beautification works were a high priority, as was better pedestrian safety between the primary school and the shops across the highway.

POLICE car windows were smashed, as were shop windows opposite the Lilydale Police Station and the petrol station next door was subject to an armed robbery in the early hours of Friday morning.

A 35-year-old Millgrove man was caught and charged with criminal damage after his crime spree about 3am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Allan Price said the man used a brick to smash windows at the shops opposite the police station, before turning his attention to the police cars parked in the street.

“He used a brick to smash the windows of a police van and transit car,” Sen Sgt Price said.

“He then went on to commit an armed robbery wanting cigarettes, using the brick as a weapon.”

The man will face court at a later date.

Kallista marks centenary in style

By JODIE SYMONDS A LITTLE piece of Kallista’s history has turned 100 years old and the community came together to celebrate the milestone.

The Kallista Mechanics’ Institute held the Kallista Hall Centenary in celebration of its 100th anniversary.

The centenary event included a historical re-enactment of the Kallista community in the early 1900s.

Event organiser John Lloyd said the hall was past full capacity.

“There was just so many people it was unbelievable the support we had,” he said.

“It took a lot of people back to those times and got people involved in Kallista’s history.

“The people that played various parts in the hall and community in the re-enactment were done really well.”

South Sassafras State School of 30 children was originally held in Kallista Hall in 1919, now held across the road from the hall.

Graham Kennaday designed a set of historical badges for the Kallista Mechanics’ Institute as a thank you.

“One badge was to be donated to each primary school student at Kallista Primary School and other badges were sold at the centenary,” Mr Lloyd said.

“We’ve just had so much support for the event and we’re so thankful for those who have donated to the hall and to those who supported the centenary.”

A plaque celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Kallista Mechanics’ Institute will be erected in the coming months.

APPRENTICESHIP and traineeship completion rates remain poor despite escalating costs.

Last Wednesday the Victorian Auditor-General released a report into apprenticeship and traineeship completion and found the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) has seen no increase in the proportion of apprentices or trainees who complete their training.

“As was the case in 2004, over a third of people who start an apprenticeship or traineeship do not complete it,” the report stated.

“These are disappointing results given that there has been a 37 per cent increase - in real terms - in funding to apprenticeships and traineeships since 2004.”

Yarra Valley Educational Precinct committee leader Bernard Dobson said factors such as travel time, condensed course times and students picking the wrong course to start with all affect the drop-out rates.

“Students are being asked to complete a four-year course in three years - they are continually being asked to do more and more,” Mr Dobson said.

“I would like to see schools hav-

ing a greater involvement in helping students in their higher education pathways.

“VCAL starts in year 11 and 12 but I’d like to see something in year 9 and 10 for students to really explore options and to experience different trades before they decide.”

Last week the Mail reported that the 2011 ABS Census data shows the Yarra Ranges highest education attainment of certificates is 7.2 per cent higher than Metro Australia and 0.3 per cent higher in advanced diploma attainments.

Mr Dobson said with the closure of both the Swinburne Lilydale campus and Morrison’s means the outer east was now the most educationally underprivileged region in Melbourne in regards to postsecondary education.

“Action is required from all political parties to ensure that this educational disadvantage is significantly reduced by ensuring that the Lilydale site is retained from university, vocational, and community education,” he said.

“We call for innovative forms of higher education and training to be considered, including a variety of forms of co-operation between various educational institutions, industry groups and the community.”

Cover work risks THE announcement that the new environmental workforce for 18 to 25-year-olds - the “green army” - will not be covered by any workers’ compensation scheme is extremely worrying for people who care about the consequences of work place injuries.

Under usual work arrangements, employers are required to ensure their employees are protected by a workers’ compensation scheme and health and safety standards.

We are very concerned that members of the “green army” will not be protected in the same way as other workers.

These young workers will undertake heavy manual labour including clearing local creeks and waterways, fencing and tree planting - work that carries a high level of physical risk.

If these young workers are injured and not covered by a workers’ compensation scheme which is focused on early intervention and returning employees to work, there is a risk that if they suffer a serious injury without help, they may not return to work.

If state and federal governments are serious about providing these young workers with a fair and reasonable opportunity to join the workforce, they should work together to provide them with the same workplace injury protection as other employees in Australia.

Keep rifles out THE Premier’s proposal to cull deer in the Dandenongs using 54 shooters with high-powered rifles is very dangerous.

These reserves are quite small and surrounded by houses and a bullet could easy travel right across the whole reserve - as they can travel up to two kilometres.

High-powered rifles and houses don’t mix and should not be used within 500 metres of a house under any circumstances, as someone could be shot.

Will the Premier ensure that this rule is abided by to protect local communities?

A local chap is willing to use a bow and arrow to hunt deer, a far safer option.

Youth cuts a concern EDUCATIONAL outcomes for youth in our community should be of major concern for all of us.

Knox Council’s Youth Strategy 2012-’17 shows that young people aged between 10 and 25 years comprise 20 per cent of the local population.

Yet attainment of Year 12 or equivalent sits below the state average and well below the average for other municipalities within the Eastern Metropolitan Area.

You might think this would be a call to arms for the State Government to invest in and resource local education providers, but instead the Napthine Government has committed cut

after cut across all tiers of education.

Cuts to the TAFE sector of $290 million each year have proven disastrous with the closure of campuses, the closure of traditional trade courses, and the introduction of higher fees so that those already struggling financially are less likely to see TAFE as a pathway to a better job.

Last week’s Victorian Auditor-General’s report clearly shows not one additional apprenticeship has been created under the Napthine Government, despite industry crying out for skilled workers and the youth unemployment rate skyrocketing.

In response, Peter Hall the minister responsible for TAFE, literally cuts and runs his way into an early retirement.

In our schools and Adult Community Education (ACE) providers, the situation isn’t any better.

Under Napthine, infrastructure capital spending has more than halved, funding for support officers has been quartered, and the schools’ Start Bonus and the Education Maintenance Allowance payment are being scrapped altogether.

Funding has also been slashed for VCAL programs in schools, TAFEs and ACE Providers such as the Mountain District Learning Centre (MDLC) in Ferntree Gully.

MDLC has about 80 people enrolled in their VCAL and VCE program, with another 50 on the waiting list.

That’s 50 kids who want to continue their education but can’t.

The evidence is clear, when young people disengage from education it is bad news for everyone.

It doesn’t help the young person, it doesn’t help the economy, and it doesn’t help our local community.

Across the state, but particularly within our local community, young people should be encouraged to continue with their education at all costs, but instead Napthine’s cuts to TAFE, VCAL and our schooling system continues to do exactly the opposite.

One term wonder MANY years ago I worked with a wonderful lady who was very wise. She would say “people who are clever often do not have any common sense”.

I look to our Prime Minister, a Rhodes Scholar now six months into the job. He hasn’t covered himself in glory; managing in about six weeks to insult not one but three presidents in the Asian region - Indonesia, China and Japan.

He now wants the general public to go easy on Scott Morrison as he has a difficult portfolio.

Stop flight path RE: Passenger jet flight path over Dandenong Ranges.

I have put in writing my concerns regarding the increase in passenger jet traffic directly over the Dandenong Ranges to the Airservices and Noise Complaint Information Service, and they stated in writing that there are more passenger jets going over the Dandenong Ranges bound for LA and New Zealand.

The noise intrusion disturbs the peace of the Dandenong Ranges renowned and loved for its natural beauty and tranquillity and if we don’t send a clear message that a jet flight path over the Dandenongs is not acceptable, we will have more jets and more noise disturbance in the future.

Stand proud, defiant MCDONALD’S Corporation and Boronia franchisee James Currie have made no attempt to win over hills residents, as they know it’s futile. Results of the original McDonald’s phone survey remain undeclared as they unashamedly continue to suggest they have overwhelming support for the Tecoma development.

Recently some hills residents performed a surprise ’Clean-Up Australia Day’ around James Currie’s Boronia outlet.

What a disgrace! Streets plastered with branded litter. Blowing down streets, discarded on nature strips, overflowing from bins, under shrubs and clogging drains.

Is this the future of Tecoma, the beautiful Dandenong Ranges National Park and the Greater Dandenong Ranges? Is this what we want within 70 metres of our kinder and Primary school?

McDonald’s has only one hope to remain embedded in Tecoma ... and that is our silent complacency.

While proposed C126 amendments will provide a massive disincentive for further fast food developments in the hills; I personally believe it is the respect that our community has gathered over the past two years that will see Tecoma once again McDonald’s-free.

As has become common we have had no communication from McDonald’s as to their intentions for opening day but I will quite happily share mine.

When word is received that the doors have opened I intend to don my well-worn red T-shirt and proceed to the outlet.

I will turn my back on the ‘unwelcome visitor’ and continue to peacefully and quietly protest its presence in Tecoma.

The image of our passionate community still uniting to peacefully declare our opposition to this development is far more powerful than anger, abuse or violence.

There will be no need to ‘move me on’ as I have no intention of causing any disturbance, harassing any patrons or threatening any employees.

My intention is to continue to educate and share our history with passers-by.

I intend to make my family proud, to make my community proud and to maintain the respect our community has gained with integrity and determination.

Every Monday morning when the children of Tecoma Primary attend assembly they start with the following school oath: I love my country, my home and my school.

I am honest and reliable.

I show good sportsmanship.

I care for the environment.

And I help to make the world a better place.

No puff to laws THE Department of Health’s smoke-free laws protecting children in their play and outdoor areas are long overdue.

However, why are these new laws only limited to reducing children’s exposure to tobacco smoke?

Exposure to burn-off smoke (created by both private and public land burning) for children and all others is, by a very long way, a much worse health hazard than some tobacco smoke being emitted within 10 metres.

Hills children and all other residents are continually exposed to toxic burn-off smoke not only in their play areas but in their schools, homes and most other areas in the Hills.

Should we trust the State Government to do the right thing protecting our health and well-being? After their pathetic handling of the Morwell coal fires, I think not!

The summer fire season is coming to an end and soon we will have all those selfish and uncaring private land burners filling our air with toxic smoke.

In addition, we will have government authorities boasting of how they have exceeded their burn-off quotas by destroying the environment and creating tonnes of carbon pollution in the process.

Does anyone have faith that the burners, authorities, local and state governments will do the right thing to protect our health and amenity?

Rogers in regional tour

In support of his latest release Rogers Sings Rogerstein, his forthcoming tour focuses on his strong connection to the regional parts of Australia and the bond of these cities.

Rogers will also be joined by long-time friend and musical companion, guitarist Shane O’Mara.

Rogers was the former front-man of Australian Rock n’ Roll band You Am I and has also released 10 studio albums three of which have debuted at number one.

Worth a Smile THE Gemco Players Community Theatre (GPCT) is hosting a special project helping special little souls.

The theatre group is performing Project Smile - a cabaret style comedy and song night to raise funds to help the organisation Smile.

Smile provides operations to children in overseas countries to correct disfigurements caused by a severe cleft palate.

Anti-arson patrols

By JESSE GRAHAM COUNCIL officers will be helping to deter would-be fire bugs with its newly implemented Fire Patrol team, which will help to patrol parks on high fire danger days.

The Fire Patrol began in January and is made up of Yarra Ranges Council’s Open Spaces team members who patrol parks and reserves on Total Fire Ban days.

Open Spaces team leader Rohan Brown said that because parks and bushland workers are unable to use their chainsaws, lawnmowers or brush cutters fire risk days they will instead be tasked with carrying out the patrols.

Mr Brown said that the patrols would have stickers on their vehicles with the council logo and ‘Fire Patrol’ on them and would drive from Lilydale up to

Yarra Junction and back, covering each suburb along the way, before heading through Coldstream and Yarra Glen to Healesville and back.

The team also covers the suburban areas at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges including Mount Evelyn, Montrose and Kilsyth.

While the patrol members are not equipped to fight fires, the team reports suspicious behav-

iour to team leaders and Victoria Police, and aims to have a visible presence to deter would-be arsonists.

Yarra Ranges Council’s Risk, Emergency and Community Safety manager Brett Ellis said that he hoped the presence of the Fire Patrol would stop anyone who was considering starting a fire in bushland.

“Fire prevention is a team effort, and we are happy to help

out in any way we can,” Mr Ellis said. “This includes redirecting our resources to boost the community’s safety.”

The patrols will take place until the end of the declared fire danger period.

Anyone witnessing suspicious behaviour is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, while anyone who sees an emergency should contact triple zero immediately.

Chilli chicken competition winner Gabi couldn’t wait to wipe the chilli from his face.

MELBOURNE’S Food and Wine Festival came to the Yarra Valley this month, with local producers keen to show off their produce.

The Herb and Chilli Festival was held on Saturday and Sunday, with thousands of visitors keen to get a taste of the hot stuff.

The new chilli chicken eating competition was a winner, with a number of contenders putting their hand up to take on the burning sauce.

Each of them devoured the chicken with tears streaming down every face, but a man named Gabi was able to finish first.

Last weekend, Yarra Ranges producers were able to showcase the very best of the area as nine Malaysian chefs toured Victoria.

Stopping for lunch at Thousand Candles winery in Wandin, the chefs were impressed with local trout, cheeses and beef - even hoping to secure a deal to have the produce

Dogs to roam freely NEW off-lead areas will give Yarra Ranges dogs the chance to stretch their legs.

Four new off-lead areas were endorsed by the council at its 11 March meeting - Coronation Park in Healesville and Margaret Lewis Reserve in Coldstream, Hull Road Drainage Reserve in Mooroolbark and Sunset Drive Reserve in Chirnside Park.

Yarra Ranges now has 23 areas where dogs can be exercised off lead in a designated section of the park of reserve.

Under the new regulations, there are also nine reserves where dogs and cats are prohibited altogether, or in part.

Yarra Ranges mayor Fiona McAllister said increasing off-lead areas was part of council’s strategy to encourage responsible pet ownership.

“By increasing the number of dog off-lead areas, dog owners now have more options for places to safely exercise their dogs and be active themselves,” Cr McAllister said.

Swag of medals grabbed LATEISHA Willis was the standout performer at the Australian Junior Track and Field Championships held in Sydney last week.

Lateisha became the Yarra Ranges Athletics Club’s first Australian Champion when she won her Under 15 women’s 90 metre hurdles final late on Friday afternoon.

She backed this up with a close second in the Under 15 Women’s 200 metre hurdles final on Saturday afternoon.

Lateisha also competed in the 100 metres on Sunday.

Not to be outdone, the club’s more experienced athletes competed at the Victorian Masters Track and Field Championship at Nunawading over the weekend.

Sophie Todorov continued her dominant form with six gold medal performances, winning the 100 metres, long jump, 60 metres, 200 metres, shot put and triple jump.

Ken Taylor competed in long jump (second), 100 metres (fifth), high jump (second), 60 metres (fourth) and 200 metres (fifth).

Mark Beavis returned to the track after injury to win his 1500 metres.

Saturday morning provided the little athletes with another opportunity to prepare for the upcoming State Little Athletics Championships on 29 and 30 March.

If the number of personal bests and club records broken by the athletes on Saturday is any indication,

Special mention to Molly Dixon, Chelsea Thompson, Georgia Laven and Bailey Griffiths who all broke club records on Saturday.

Next week is the final round for the season in a ‘choose your own’ event day.

Eagles to dare, while Blues set to defend title YARRA Valley Cricket Association finals kicked off this weekend after a season of intriguing results leading to a much-anticipated finals series.

In all grades, final positions were only decided in the final round, so it was expected that the Semi Finals would be closely fought contests.

In the competition’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, the old adage that form at the right time of the year is vitally important going into finals rang true as reigning premiers Seville face Yarra Junction in the Grand Final.

Both sides have clearly been the best in the business since Christmas and thoroughly deserve their opportunity to take out the ultimate prize.

With a strong bowling line-up, and the wide expanses of the Coldstream, one would be brave to tip against the Bloods and they showed all their might in easily disposing the Tigers for 64.

In the One Day Grade, Silvan will play Yarra Glen in the season decider.

Yarra Glen made short work of Wandin, bowling the Bulldogs out for 77 and then cruising to the total with the loss of only two wickets.

Premiership favourites Silvan had a tougher battle against Seville.

Super soccer charity cash

By REBECCA BILLS LOCAL school girl Gigi Collins organised a 12-hour soccer event that raised over $2000 for breast cancer research.

On Saturday 15 March, soccer players from around the hills joined in force for 12 hours of back-to-back soccer games running from 10am to 10pm.

The 16-year-old Mater Christi student spent three months organising the event with the guidance of her Monbulk Ranges Soccer Club coach Hans Damenas as part of a personal project that all Year 10 students at the school have to complete.

Gigi’s father Andrew Collins said the girls must pick something that was close to them for the project to give back to the community.

“She has been playing soccer since she was seven and decided to do a marathon soccer event, and with breast cancer being so prevalent at the moment, she wanted to raise money for that,”

he said.

“The event was a huge success for her and for the club as we want to promote Monbulk Ranges Soccer Club as a club that is for the community.

“The local traders were fabulous supporting the event, and without them it would have been very hard to put together.”

Mr Collins said that in everyone’s eyes the day was an absolute success.

“We had people travelling from as far as Mentone to support the event,” he said.

“Some of Gigi’s teachers came down for a kick and there were around 12 teams that played on the day.

“Obviously, I am really proud of her, but without the support of the club it would never have happened.”

Gigi is now finishing off all the paperwork and achievement awards from the day and is looking forward to making this an annual event.

By KATH GANNAWAY THERE was only standing room at the Josh Matthews Memorial football practice match between Coldstream and Silvan on Wednesday 12 March.

The biggest crowd in years gathered at the Coldstream oval for the ‘Turbocharged’ evening match that raised $4500 for the Asthma Foundation.

Coldstream player Josh, nicknamed Turbo, died last year from a sudden and unexpected asthma attack. He was 17.

Both teams lined up for a minute’s silence before the games which were played in two-quarter blocks of Under 19, Reserves and Seniors.

Players Jarrod Healy and John Rafferty paid tribute to the former Under 19 captain, saying Josh had strived to be the

best he could and wanted the best for his club since the day he pulled on the blue and white jumper in the Under 12s.

“His attitude didn’t only make him a better player, a better person, but it made being around the club a better place,” Jarrod said.

Organiser Stacey Adams thanked everyone who contributed, saying it was a great success and a great tribute to Josh.

BENIGN conditions greeted the members at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday as two teams were vying for the Alex Wee Cup. This also is used for the qualifying round of the club’s 4BBB championship.

On the back of a fabulous round of golf by Steve Town (14), who shot a 75 off the stick including four birdies, his teaming with Ross Martin (10) came in with 50 points to win the day.

They are also the number one team in the draw for the next round.

In second place by winning a count back were Peter Jones (19) and Leigh Morison (16) on 46 as were Kameron Geeves (13) and Dean Shannon (16).

Also on 46 were Graham White (13) and Allan Ecclestone (18).

Ross Martin was nearest the pin on the fourth, Peter Glasscock the seventh, Barry Cook the 12th, Mike Litchfield the 13th and Martin also picked up the pro pin pennies on the 18th to round out a very successful day.

The ladies’ comp and top qualifiers were Davina Mackey

and Irene Cranston who showed the other women how to play this format.

The seniors’ pennant team played host to Glen Waverley, which, like most teams that front up at Emerald, found the going tough as the local crew showed them how to play this course.

Ken Hill won 4/3, Peter Clowes was one up, Leigh Morison won 6/4, Bob Kennedy was one up while Mick Petrie and John Piggott came out square to give Emerald the win nine points to one.

Ken Hill, on his way to a great win, managed to eagle on the par four 10th hole - which is no mean feat as anyone who has played the hole will attest.

Wednesday’s Overtly Faint Golf (OFG) using OFG handicaps saw Mick Petrie (25) star with a net score of 62.

Next was Mike Litchfield (12) on 63, including 25 putts with Graeme Fergus (19) on 64 and John Piggott (19) on 65.

Next Saturday members front for a round of stableford and a chance for the handicap pennant team to hone their skills for the first round the following week.
