Student accommodation developers have increasingly utilised the $4.5 billion National Rental Assistance Scheme, initially meant for low-cost public housing when launched in 2007. The scheme has come under attack for diverging from its original purpose.

Commercial & General, working with Geelong’s Teleta Property group, is waiting anxiously as the Government reviews the program.

You can only tie up a project like this for a reasonable time, not forever.�

The apartments would be available to the rental market at a 30 per cent discount if the project secured funding, Mr McGarigle said.

Commercial office and ground-floor retailing and car parking were also part of the plan.

Student housing is an important potential money-maker for Geelong’s embattled economy.

In addition to the C&G/Teleta project, a $45 million, 10-building, also ostensibly for student accommodation also, is slated for nearby Brougham Place.

Deakin recently completed more than 300 new students units at Waurn Ponds, taking the campus’s stock to a total 794, with NRAS and state funding.

LOCAL federal MPs are arguing over a federal scheme meant to underpin a stalled $100 million high-rise building for central Geelong.

The student housing project is dependent on National Rental Assistance Scheme funding. Developers Commercial & General and Teleta say the project could create 1000 jobs.

“The Federal Government is methodically considering the NRAS. Any changes will be the result of consultation with the states and territories, investors, and the housing sector,” she said.

Ms Henderson said she wrote to Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews several weeks ago about an application to build the student accomodation building.

“Teleta advises that its Geelong proposal would ease rent pressure, improve housing affordability and create jobs,” she said.

Labor Member for Corio Richard Marles said the student accommodation project was important to the region’s economy.

“This project has the potential to provide a significant number of jobs for Geelong, which is what we really need right now,” Mr Marles said.

“What we need is the Government to be supporting it - not looking at cutting it.”

Tech trio in $21m sale GEELONG is emerging as Australia’s Silicon Valley after expanding education management system provider Sky Software sold for $21 million.

Sky Software chief Nick Stanley said the sale of the three-year-old privately-owned company to United Kingdom’s Tribal Group highlighted the level of global interest in Geelong’s IT capability.

Tribal stumped up an initial $4 million, with a further $17 million payable to the end of 2017 dependent on earnings growth.

Mr Stanley held Sky Software with chief operating officer Michael McKeand and chairman Clive Mayhew, who retired after the sale.

Sky Software provides cloud-

based student management systems for vocational and higher education markets in Australia, Asia Pacific and Europe.

The company posted an unaudited loss before tax of $600,000 last financial year, although the value of its gross assets was $4.5 million.

Sky Software employed 40 staff and aimed to hire 40 more in the next three years to support its expansion, Mr Stanley said.

“We have the right skills, infrastructure and people for an IT software company to compete and expand globally.

“We continue to remain committed to Geelong and our global expansion, with Tribal, will allow us to continue creating and maintaining jobs in Victoria over the coming years.”=

“We see this as a big upside underpinning our delivery model. A range of roles will evolve out of this and there are opportunities for reskilling for those open to a new career.”

Mr Stanley said the expansion would require business analysts, project managers, customer relations specialists, support-desk technologists, administration staff and accountants.

The Independent reported in December that Sky Software received a $400,000 State Government grant to establish a global support centre.

Tribal and Sky Software combined will have more than 500 customers in 60 countries and 1400 staff in 17 offices.

Ms Fathalla hoped the timing of the festival would contribute to a positive state of mind in the region after recent jobs and economic shocks.

“Geelong’s going through a massive transition, we have a challenging economy, but through art Figment can bring a positive effect on Geelong,” she said.

“It is an opportunity to experience art as never before, to experience beyond the boundaries of what we thought was artistically possible, to think of what other boundaries can be broken.”

Mr Katos said Cr Richards was at

GOLD fever in the 19th Century led to the sinking of mines in leafy Newtown right beside present-day Geelong College.

But the Mercer Hill ventures were unsuccessful, leaving the name Prospect Rd for posterity rather than prosperity.

The mines have remained largely fogotten but are rolled gold to an unusual exhibition at Geelong’s National Wool Museum.

Spearheaded by a soaring image of a sword-wielding green knight extolling the virtues of Hearne’s bronchitis-curing linctus, The 25th Object exhibition presents a cross-section of the city’s heritage, from discovery and wool sales to sport, entertainment and sea disasters.

Timed to coincide with the museum’s 25th anniversary, the

show features 24 historic local artefacts while challenging the public to identify a 25th.

The treasures include a ship rigging block, costumes, desks and benches, a fire station finial, trophies and silverware, posters, cameras and more, all tied to some sphere of Geelong enterprise.

Musum director Padraig Fischer said the exhibition was part of an ongoing drive to showcase the region’s rich heritage.

“There are so many stories out there, like the Chinese football team in Ballarat back in the 1890s that the Geelong Football Club helped finance when they wanted to come and play in Geelong.

“We want to be the place to keep these kind of stories together and share them.”

Legal twist for high-rise heat

By NOEL MURPHY RESIDENTS have questioned City Hall using lawyers to bolster plans for high-rise rezoning across Geelong.

They fear the move means councillors might fail to represent their objections at an independent panel hearing on the rezonings.

The panel will hear submissions on a proposed C300 rezoning amendment to allow four-storey apartments in parts of Geelong West, Newtown and Belmont.

Newly-formed Western Residents Action Group, representing Newtown and Manifold Heights, questioned why council would have legal representation at the panel hearing.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are not against progress in Geelong, but progress must be sympathetic to those neighbourhood values that make our area such a great place to live, work and raise families,â&#x20AC;? the action group said in a prepared statement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A more-considered, targeted approach to zoning should be considered rather than simply throwing a blanket over the entire Geelong West suburb and a number of the surrounding areas.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Should this proposed zoning be approved to proceed, residents are despairing that (they) will find their living areas placed under overwhelming pressure by this high-density rezoning with in-

creased traffic congestion, seemingly no parking plan, overflowing schools, a lack of public open space and an increased demand for community facilities.â&#x20AC;?

Councillor Stretch Kontelj was unsure of councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legal representation at the panel but said he would seek clarification from City Hall.

State Government proposed the rezonings but council wanted to retain some control over highrise growth in Geelong rather than leave it to â&#x20AC;&#x153;some bureaucrat in Spring St,â&#x20AC;? Cr Kontelj said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These panels often come back to us with very good recommendations that are different to councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original ideas.â&#x20AC;?

Works ‘force’ cuts to art exhibitions GEELONG Gallery will be forced to reduce its exhibitions during construction of new library and heritage centre next door, councillors have heard.

But the gallery requested funding increases of up to 4.7 per cent to cover increased insurance costs and risk management because of the construction work.

The former Geelong library has been demolished and temporarily relocated to the ground floor of an adjancent state offices building.

A report to council this week said key performance indicators for the gallery had been amended following “a greater understanding of the impact of the building program for the (library) over the next two years”.

Exhibitions for the year would reduce from 20 to 16 amid “associated insurance issues”, the report said.

Exhibition hours would fall from 900 to 800 “due to the likely occasional closures of gallery spaces and the interruption of visitor experiences”.

The gallery anticipates more exhibitions with access to additional gallery space in the new building.

The clubs could now look to Avalon, initially mooted for Geelong Motocross Club after its Breakwater track closed in 2007.

Avalon Airport’s Justin Giddings said land was available on the south side of the airport.

“We have a solution here that would work and we’re in discussions with the City about what we would need to do.

“It seems straightforward. We’d have to build some mounds and whatever other requirements they might have.

It’s well out of the way of residents and won’t affect the future of the airport.”

Sporting Motor Cycle Club’s Peter Ovens said the club was investigating its options.

“Avalon doesn’t really look to be a suitable site compared to what we had.”

Geelong Motocross Club’s Frank Cambria was confident of ending up at Avalon.

“We’ve been told the council funding is still available but we need to go through the proper process and meet the criteria,” Mr Cambria said. “We hope to have one of best complexes in Australia in time for the 2015 season.

Council has been very supportive.”

Motorcycling Australia is working with Surf Coast Shire and the City to discuss alternative venues.

Ward councillor Tony Ansett said residents were excited about the major project, with the new alignment marking a significant step.

“The new road is an essential part of the Lara town centre expansion as it enables the rest of the town centre

project to move forward,” Cr Ansett said.

“Lara town centre expansion is much needed to cater for Lara’s growth and will ensure the community’s needs are met now and into the future.”

The project so far relocated Lara Bowls Club to Alkara Ave and includes construction of a new Coles supermarket and specialty stores and redevelopment of Austin Park.

FINDING a local venue for motorcycle sports is back to square one after City Hall revealed it might withhold $650,000 in funding to develop a facility.

Council promised the money for an existing track at Barrabool to become a regional home for Sporting Motor Cycle and Geelong Motocross clubs but a long-running battle with residents over noise and amenity issues ended last week when Motorcycling Australia conceded defeat.

Motorsports will now cease at the McAdam Park track after 2015.

City Hall recreation projects and central Geelong manager Dean Frost said the council only agreed to fund the McAdam Park facility if it “proceeded as planned”.

“The funding would not automatically be available for another project - it would require a new resolution of council to allocate funds toward a motorcycle facility at a different location.”

The former State Government allocated $1.27 million for Motorcycling Australia to buy McAdam Park, while Surf Coast Shire allocated $100,000 and considered giving another $100,000. Sporting Motor Cycle Club, which has used McAdam Park for about 40 years, put in $145,000.

Letters Lazy blaming workers I ALWAYS find it disturbing that Richard Worland (Letters, 7 March) can lay the blame for our economic woes at the feet of the workers who create the wealth.

The biggest threat facing small business is not lazy workers. It is lazy landlords who contribute zero to national productivity.

The second biggest threat is big businesses that treat small businesses like their personal plaything.

Has Mr Worland ever wondered why there has been precisely zero prosecutions for unconscionable conduct under existing competition laws?

I can assure him it is not that the law isn’t being breached, yet unions are routinely the target of government action. You won’t solve the problem by asking the wrong question.

Say alcohol if you Dare AFTER reading Bob Dare’s letter in last week’s Independent, I thought a little bit of reality might be welcome on the subject of drugs.

As part of the “normal, quiet majority”, Mr Dare was unwilling to identify the drug undeniably linked to the anti-social behaviours he was apparently concerned about. He espoused involvement in the criminal justice system for the users of less-popular drugs, such as cannabis and opiates, as a remedy.

Of course, the drug Mr Dare was so reluctant to address was alcohol. Alcohol is far more dangerous and a far greater problem in our society than any drug he considered deviant.

Boarder checks for seniors THERE simply need be no shortage of suitable accommodation for tertiary students in Geelong, as has been alleged.

In my own humble suburb of Belmont, more than 2000 residential properties have a single occupant.

This would suggest there may be some 8000 empty bedrooms in one suburb alone.

It surprises me so few senior citizens take in university students, Australian and overseas, for a reasonable rental. A good young tenant can be such a help around the home, assisting with shopping, taking the landlord to medical appointments if need be

Go renewable and global ON 7 FEBRUARY the Independent chose to print an Alan Barron letter that attempted to mislead readers into thinking climate science was a question of “blind faith” and that global warming was a “theory”.

Climate science is based on research and observation, not belief. Climate science is not a question of faith or opinion.

Regardless of what a few independent analysts claim, climate change is measurable. In every part of the world new climate extremes are being reported.

Last year was Australia’s hottest on record and around Geelong and Melbourne July was the warmest. Polar ice is visibly disappearing before our satellite-camera eyes. Climate data and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) measurements are undebatable.

The consequences of our increasing annual emissions are serious and beyond doubt. Fire frequency and intensity, for instance, is expected to increase

substantially in coming decades.

There is not one solution to this mess, there are many. Most are electrical and non-polluting. Continuing to spread confusion and doubt about the science of climate change benefits those with vested interests in selling oil, gas and coal before they run out.

It’s time to confront the reality of climate change and take bold steps to transition to renewable energy, along with the guidelines of, among others, the World Bank, the United Nations and their global government-supported initiative, Sustainable Energy for All. Mik Aidt Geelong

Extreme claims denied THE CLAIMS of Dave Campbell (Letters, 14 February) need to be challenged.

He claimed that 13 of the past 14 years were “the warmest in history”. This claim might be valid if the original data was reliable.

The Bureau of Meteorology was asked to examine its temperature records by the Royal Society in England, which accepts global warming theory.

Both the Climate Research Unit and The Goddard Institute have been caught manipulating data to produce a warming trend where it didn’t exist.

If the data these bodies use to bolster their claims is unreliable then we would be foolish to place too much faith in their conclusions.

The case of Kane & Kane was an appeal against a decision by an earlier judge that because the husband had shown some special skill in selecting a particular share investment that later produced a lot of money, he was entitled to more of the assets because of the level of skill he had shown.

The Full Court overruled the decision, saying the earlier judge placed too much weight on the apparent skill exercised by the husband. The court found that outside factors, such as market forces, could also have contributed to the significant amount of money the shares produced and therefore it was unfair for the husband to get a greater share of the assets simply because of the investment he made.

The important point is that each contribution made by a party to the assets of the relationship must be examined carefully; will the individual’s contributions be recognised as expected or will they be largely disregarded?

The decision could have far-reaching implications on other contributions made apart from share market investments, such as any large sum spent renovating a house that is later sold despite little demand and notwithstanding its significant worth.

Taylor set Free

By MICHELLE HERBISON LOCAL singer-songwriter Kyle Taylor believes musicians who criticise Geelong’s live music scene probably need to work harder to kick-start their careers.

“People say the scene’s dying but I don’t think it is. There are people complaining who aren’t working hard enough to get out there and have a try,” the indie/folk soloist explained.

“Geelong’s a really good place but a lot of people expect too much of it sometimes. It’s only one town.”

Taylor has been hitting the road since 2009, having supported Mark Seymour, James Reyne, Josh Pyke, Jordie Lane and Carus Thompson.

After doing his time busking and playing cover shows at local and rural pubs, the former St Joseph’s College student is enjoying spreading his original music nationally and internationally, attracting new fans along the way.

His latest studio album, Free, released last year, showcases Taylor’s mellow acoustic style with a collection of folky ballads played mostly solo.

A keen music listener, Taylor cited influences including Damien Rice, Jeff Buckley, Jordie Lane, Placebo, Laura Marling and American blues singer William Elliott Whitmore.

“A lot of musicians I watch just to watch their performance side of things,” Taylor revealed.

“A lot of folk music is slow and it’s more of a genre where you have to work your charm on stage and get the crowd involved.

“I’ve watched a lot of Passenger - he just really entertains the crowds and he’s taught me you have to make the most of every show.”

Taylor said about half of his songs “just came out” without having to “sit down and analyse” the words.

His song-writing explored universal topics such as love, often inspired by others’ stories.

“I don’t usually write about myself a lot. I try to keep it universal - not just solely based around

Motor City to rock out again after success of first festival GEELONG’S Motor City Music Festival will become an annual event after its successful debut over the long weekend.

Executive producer Hugo T Armstrong says he and the other organisers were “thrilled with the reception” for the inaugural festival, which attracted almost 5000 patrons.

“We had faith that if we built it, fans would come - and they did,” Armstrong says.

“The support we received from everyone in the community helped us to get the event up and running and the fans loved every minute.

“So many people took the time to approach me over the weekend to tell me how much they loved the event and how keen they are to return next year.”

Rock lovers embraced the three-day festival’s first night on Friday, enjoying bands including Chocolate Starfish, Nick Barker and the Heartache State, Geelong’s Diehard Dolls, Jimi Hocking’s Blues Machine and Chris Wilson’s Crown of Thorns.

Saturday attracted the largest turn-out of patrons who sang along to a diverse line-up of some of Australia’s leading tribute bands, including Pearl: The Ultimate Janis Joplin Show, The Australian Doors Show, The Australian Queen Tribute Show, Shed Zepplin, Appetite for Destruction, Thunderstruck and Kisstroyer.

Blues aficionados flocked to The Blues Train stage where Jimi Hocking Blues Machine, Geoff Achison and Lloyd Spiegel kept the party atmosphere going with dueling guitars. American Bert Deivert joined in on mandolin as a special guest, providing one of many highlights at the festival.

Sunday changed pace with a family day.

Children had their own Kids Zone where Dazzling Dan the Magic Man, Hoop Fusion and Funky Mummies provided entertainment.

Older patrons watched the next wave of local Geelong bands, while families gathered on the lawns of Southern Cross stage for Daryl Braithwaite, The Chantoozies, Boom Crash Opera, Michael Stangel, Jason Singh and Geelong’s legendary Glitter Gang.

The event culminated at 8.45pm with Geelong Showgrounds’ “largest fireworks display ever seen”, Armstrong says.

“Geelong Fireworks created a display that left people in complete awe and wanting to return again next year.”

Armstrong thanked the event’s patrons and supporters for backing the first festival.

“We are grateful that the Motor City Music Festival has been embraced so enthusiastically by everyone in our community. It belongs to us all and we’ve already got more ideas as to what we’d love to achieve next year and beyond - bring it on.”

LARA Sporting Club Bistro’s new great value daily specials cater for everyone from families and seniors to steak-lovers and gourmet aficionados.

General manager Andrew Terry says the club is proud to relaunch its bistro with a central theme of affordable, quality meals.

“This is a new launch of a diverse range of value offers that are coming out. There’s something for everyone, really,” he says.

Taste of Italy on Tuesdays offers for $19.90 a two-course Italian menu at both lunch and dinner time.

On Wednesdays the Family Feast menu offers two courses for two adults and two children for $45 including unlimited soft drink for the kids and a glass of wine or beer for mums and dads.

Seniors will flock to Lara Sporting Club on Thursdays to take advantage of the $13.50 twocourse seniors’ special, available for both lunch and dinner.

The Big Steak Out is on Fridays, offering a choice of various types of steak priced around $25.

PROTON Exora, priced from $25,990, drive away, is quite simply the most affordable sevenseater in Australia.

The Malaysian-made compact people mover also carries a large carrot in the form of free servicing for the first five years or 75,000 kilometres.

And there is no skimping on equipment, with reverse parking alarm, DVD for rear-seat residents, stylish twin five-spoke alloy wheels and a full-size spare on the base model GX. The up-specced Proton GXR test vehicle also added reversing camera, cruise control, daytime running lights, roof-mounted rear spoiler and leather seat upholstery, all for an extra $2000.

The Exora, at almost 1700 mm, stands tall, a dimension only accentuated by pinched width (1809 mm).

The front has all the grilles and air intakes found on vehicles these days, the bonnet sloping up to a sharply raked windscreen.

The roof rises and falls towards a vertical tailgate topped off by a skinny spoiler on the GXR only.

The 16-inch alloy wheels are shod with well-rated rubber.

However, the tyres can be noisy on some coarser road surfaces.

Inside, it’s cheap digs as opposed to luxury hotel, with a hotchpotch of plastic and metallic finishes, lifted to a certain extent in the Proton GXR by leather upholstery.

cargo carrying thanks to multiadjustment - the second row split is 60:40, the third row 50:50.

Headroom is generous, shoulder space is not.

The third row of seats is strictly children-only, made very attractive to the little-uns by the roof-mounted DVD player.

With the seats in use there’s little room left for luggage behind and load access can be a gamble with a tailgate that fails to lift above reasonable head height.

The engine is an uprated version of the 1.6-litre non-turbo unit found in the Proton Preve GX, with shortened stroke to give it the lower compression ratio needed by a charged engine.

The 103 kW of peak power may seem a little lacking for a seven-seater wagon but performance is adequate thanks to 205 Nm of torque popping up at 2000 rpm connected to an efficient continuously variable transmission.

Engineers from British sports car company Lotus, which is owned by Proton, have produced

a relatively firm suspension and taut steering.

It’s certainly not sporting but works well enough and the dynamics are better than you would expect in a bargain priced people mover.

Expect to use eight to nine litres per 100 kilometres in a mix of day-to-day city commuting and open-road running. Brakes are discs all round, ventilated at the front.

Electronic stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes and speed activated door locks, plus four airbags earn the Exora a four-star ANCAP safety rating, while there is a lot of high tensile steel in use giving the body strength and rigidity.

Turn a blind eye to some ordinary fixtures and fittings and the Proton Exora is fine for those who want carrying capacity without breaking the family budget.

NEW LOOK: The latest Honda Odyssey has moved from a station wagon to crossover in its styling theme.

By EWAN KENNEDY HONDA has made a major change of direction in its fifth generation Odyssey people mover.

Previously it has followed passenger-car, station-wagon lines, making it easy to drive and park and - dare I say it? - more popular with female drivers.

Odyssey now has an extra 150mm in height to give it a more spacious interior.

Odyssey competes with the likes of Kia Carnival and Toyota Tarago in the people-mover field. It almost impinges on the van-based VW Transporter, Mercedes Vito and Hyundai iMax. The Australian importer makes no bones about wanting to chase the commercial operators, not just private buyers.

Odyssey features much bolder lines than just about anything else on the market, which is a big surprise after many years of rather conservative bodies.

The huge chromed grille attracted a lot of attention from all who saw it as it really does dominate the front of the vehicle. There are prominent front guards and upswept sculpted lines on the side of the vehicle which have a touch of Italian to them.

The styled alloy wheels on our review Odyssey wouldn’t be out of place on a slammed hot hatch.

The Odyssey’s information and entertainment system uses a dashboard-mounted colour touch screen to display audio functions, Bluetooth features and the car’s systems information.

In a cost-saving move that’s likely to become increasingly common, the new Honda Odyssey doesn’t come with satellite navigation either as standard or an option.

Instead it relies on the assumption that most drivers will have a smartphone that provides access to a special downloadable app which links through Bluetooth to the car’s in-dash monitor.

There is only one powertrain; a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol unit with peak power of 129 kW and top torque of 225 Nm. The biggest change in the drivetrain is the replacement of the fivespeed automatic with the greater efficiency of continuously variable transmission (CVT).

All models of the Honda Odyssey

come with front and side airbags as well as curtain airbags that cover both second and third row seats.

Crash prevention items include ABS brakes with brake assist, emergency stop signal, vehicle stability assist and traction control system, tyre deflation warning and daytime running lights.

The upmarket Odyssey VTi-L adds blind spot and cross-traffic warning, smart parking assist, and a multi-view camera system that uses four fisheye cameras located in the grille, door mirrors and tailgate to provide a choice of 180-degree wide and overhead views.

All seats are large and comfortable.

The seating in the eight-seat Odyssey VTi is two-three-three; the seven-seat VTi-L (as tested) is two-two-three.

Good legroom is provided for all six of the outer seats.

This will be huge bonus to those with children in their teenage years.

It also explains why Honda Australia is keen to attract buyers from the likes of hotels, perhaps even hire-car operators.

The second and third rows in the eight-seater have three-way split seatbacks that provide a variety of seating and cargo options.

New Odyssey has sliding rear doors instead of the conventionally hinged units on all previous generations. Both doors on the higher-specced Odyssey VTi-L, but only the left-rear of the entry level Odyssey ViT, can be operated remotely either through the key fob or by a pull of the handle.

Boot space has been increased over the outgoing model by storing the spare wheel under the front seats.

However, it’s only a small area and struggles to hold more than one large suitcase and a couple of smaller bags.

While you do get more luggage depth the passengers in the centre row of seats aren’t able to put their feet under the front seats due to the bulge created by the spare wheel compartment.

Honda Odyssey cruised effortlessly and quietly as the engine has strong torque over a wide rev range.

The big Odyssey is safe and sure at higher than normal cornering speeds. It leaves a good margin of safety should you accidentally enter a bend too fast.

Model range: VTi 2.4-litre eight-seat five-door wagon: $38,990 (CVT automatic); VTi-L 2.4-litre seven-seat five-door wagon: $47,620 (CVT automatic).

IndySport Cats facing Demons at home GEELONG Cricket Club finished an outstanding home-and-away season in third position on the Premier Cricket table after defeating Melbourne Uni last weekend.

The win gave the Cats the right to host their first final against Melbourne this weekend.

It was only a month ago that they lost to Melbourne, so they will need to lift a cog to reverse that result.

Last time they had Aaron Finch and Jake Reed available as well, so it remains to be seen how the Geelong side will look Saturday morning.

While a home final gives the Cats an advantage, they will need to be at their absolute best to win this one.

Geelong Cricket Association also starts its finals this weekend, with Newtown & Chilwell coming from nowhere to pinch sixth spot on the division one ladder and earning the right to fight it out for the silverware.

The Two Blues will have the luxury of playing at their home ground against minor premier North Geelong.

The Magpies have been the standout side all summer, though, and with Jake Thorne making another century last week will go in heavy favourites and should be too strong.

The next final also sees the lower-ranked side playing on its home ground when East Belmont takes on St Joseph’s at Winter Reserve.

The Lions have suffered some inconsistent form of late but still possess plenty of match winners, meaning St Joseph’s won’t take them lightly.

But St Joseph’s finished second for a reason and, with a good spread of talent in form, will go in a heavy favourite.

The third final will be at Osborne Park between South Barwon and Grovedale.

Both sides have struggled to find any consistency of their own but, with lots of experienced finals campaigners in both line-ups, it’s hard to pick a winner in this one.

Perhaps the good form of South Barwon’s batsmen could give them the edge.

In division two, Newcomb & District had not only a magnificent victory but a host of results in other games go its way to sneak into sixth position and keep alive its dream of defending last year’s flag.

To do so it will need to beat Bell Post Hill at Marshall after a great season that included not losing a match since round four.

Newcomb & District would have to improve a lot to be any chance here but the Panthers should have its measure.

St Albans Breakwater will play Marshall at Jarvis Oval Waurn Ponds.

While the Bears have had a good season, with some promising young talent coming through, the

experience of St Albans Breakwater will shine through.

In the third game, Thomson takes on Modewarre at Grinter Reserve.

While Modewarre has been a dangerous team, Thomson is a well-drilled unit and possess too many gun finalists to let this one slip.

In division three, Teesdale claimed the minor premiership and will play Corio at Winchelsea this weekend.

While Corio enjoyed an outright victory last game, Teesdale’s form throughout the season indicates it will be too strong.

Shelford will play Winchelsea at Little River.

Winchelsea has been in great form, not losing a match after Christmas, and will go in a red hot chance of causing an upset.

Lastly, Bell Park plays Inverleigh at Lethbridge.

While Inverleigh had an outright win over North Shore last week, Bell Park has a knack for being very hard to beat in finals and should be too strong.

GENERALLY good conditions over the past week resulted in some of the best captures for some time.

Kingfish from The Rip area dominated reports again. There was plenty of boat traffic to contend with but numbers of quality fish were landed, with jigging the best method.

Jigs in the 130g to 200g range were ideal, with most of the fish between 3kg and 6kg.

Every now and then a monster was caught, such as Greg Norton’s beauty of 18.3kg and another he lost of similar proportions.

Paul Ellis found the kings while trolling for salmon in close at Collendina. He caught plenty of salmon but the four kingfish around 70cm, which took black and silver Slug Go soft plastics, were a real bonus.

Many anglers tried offshore for sharks, with berley trails attracting makos from 30kg to 50kg. The best depth was 50m.

Patrick George fished his favourite platform just past Lorne where he enjoyed a frantic four-hour session on salmon. Using 30g metal slugs, his tally of fish included salmon over 2kg along with one small kingfish, all of which were released.

Guy Stevens fished Swan Bay’s entrance, landing four nice flathead and a 12.6kg gummy shark on 4kg tackle in just over 1m of water.

Cord Lund fished late into the night on the bay, catching seven gummies and keeping one that weighed just over 10kg cleaned.

Plenty of squid were taken but they were mostly very small, which isn’t ideal for eating but a great size for bait.

MAKO MY DAY: Pat Rollinson with a mako shark caught off Barwon Heads. before dark where he soon had numbers of slimy mackerel in his berley trail. Unfortunately, it took until mid-morning before he landed three snapper all over 3kg on his fresh baits.

Spit for a catch of five fantastic snapper to 5.6kg on fresh squid.

The outer-harbour spoil grounds remained a viable option on soft plastics, especially in the extremely early hours of the morning. Indications are

that the snapper seem to slow considerably once the sun rises.

Peter McFarlane fished the Hermsely spoil early Sunday morning when he encountered many small fish. However, by 8am he had his bag limit of snapper to 3.8kg.

Whiting were caught in many locations with Kirks Point providing the best bags for anglers fishing the last two hours before dark with pippie baits.

The average fish was around 33cm to 35cm but baglimit captures were common.

Corio Bay was difficult, with only soft plastics anglers drifting the Stingaree Bay spoil grounds providing good reports. They caught snapper to just over 1kg, mainly early in the morning, while pike were taken from rock ledges around North Shore.

Trevally were landed in the cut at Queenscliff an hour either side of the high tide on soft plastics such as turtleback worms or curl-tail grubs.

Wurdi Boluc Reservoir fished best for quality redfin during the last two hours before dark on lures such as Bob n Spoons, tiger minnows and Fish Arrow soft plastics.

Corey Mann caught redfin while casting lures above the ring road in the Barwon River. Most were small but plenty were taken on an Atomic Shad lure in the Muddy Prawn colour.

Lake Toolondo’s water level continued dropping but it remained one of the best lakes in the state for quality trout. Mudeye has been the preferred choice but lure has been accounting for the best captures, particularly when using designs that can be retrieved extremely slowly.

The Rip might be an option for anyone looking to jig on the kingfish this weekend depending on the conditions, while surf anglers should find the tides late in the morning perfect for salmon between Lorne and Wye River on lures ranging from 20g to 30g.
