“For the first time the Creekscape is being use to full advantage too - it is an under utilised facility and is quite picturesque,” she said. Another first this year will be a full program of dinners, lunches and farm tours which are aimed at directly connecting the iconic festival back to the region’s food and produce.

ORGANISERS are predicting the 49th annual Apple and Grape Festival, beginning today, will attract a bumper crop of tourists and locals alike. Granite Belt Wine and Tourism Marketing Director Sarah Reeves said while there had been some negative reaction to the decision not to use the ageing arches in the street to herald the event, it still had a strong traditional feel while also looking forward. “There has been great interest (in the event) from both inside and outside of the community,” Ms Reeves said. “That is what is really important - that the festival remains relevant to visitors and the community. “Having that balance of tradition and relevance is really important.” Ms Reeves said the decision had been taken not to use the iconic arches this year as they were “in need of refurbishment”. However, she predicted they would be back “bigger and better than ever” for next year’s big 50th anniversary celebrations. The Apple and Grape Festival will stretch over four days. Ms Reeves said the event would be a true celebration of the area from it’s produce to it’s people from the reworked musical and entertainment program in the main street put together by Rosie Haslett and Trevor Wren, to the new farm and food events.
