Cheers, crime’s down By ALESHA CAPONE BRIMBANK’S top cop has declared he is happy with the offence reductions recorded in several key areas of the area’s latest crime figures. Inspector Chris Gilbert has labelled the results “just fabulous” for his team after Victoria Police last week released data comparing crimes committed in 2013 with the previous 12 months. In Brimbank, the total crime rate has risen by 4.5 per cent to more than 19,300 crimes. Vehicle theft has fallen 15 per cent to over 1000 incidents and theft from

vehicles has dropped 14 per cent to just over 2340 crimes. Burglaries, apart from residential offences, have also dropped 15 per cent to below 520 offences. Property damage has lessened by 11 per cent and residential burglaries by 6 per cent, both reaching just over 1550 crimes. Assault (excluding domestic violence) has dropped almost three per cent to more than 940 offences. In contrast, family violence assaults have grown three per cent to more than 1860 felonies.

Crime against the person rose by seven per cent to over 2510 offences and drug offences by 11 per cent to 1275 crimes. Robberies have risen 21 per cent to more than 310 offences and ‘other crime’ by 38 per cent, to 3075 offences. Insp Gilbert said ‘other crimes’ included justice procedures such as people breaching their sentences. “We are very, very happy with the reductions in what we call the big-ticket crime items,” he said. Insp Gilbert credited the good results to units of officers focusing on specific items such as theft from vehicles and

increased police patrols in Sunshine’s CBD. He said police have also refined some of their operating procedures like focusing on repeat offenders. “We have, from time-to-time, known there are particular offenders who are responsible for a large amount of crimes,” he said. Insp Gilbert said he believed the Brimbank robbery statistics would potentially fall even more during the next data release. “I believe they will be lower in the next quarter because we know the longer-term trends,” he said.

A NEW pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Derrimut is set to create 120 jobs after construction is finished. After airline Qantas last week announced it would cut up to 5000 jobs across the country, a glimmer of hope was offered for workers in the West with the news global healthcare company Fresenius Kabi will be setting up shop in Castro Way. Their $47 million pharmaceutical manufacturing facility and distribution centre will include positions such as manufacturing operators, engineers and quality specialists. The company plans for their centre to become operational by next year. Premier Denis Napthine said Fresenius Kabi supplied intravenous therapies to Australian hospitals and specialist clinics for use in surgery, emergency departments and intensive care. “Fresenius Kabi Australia offers a wide range of products and services, including infusion treatments, oncology compounding and generic drugs,” he said. “This new facility represents a significant vote of confidence in Victoria’s healthcare industry and the state economy.” The Fresenius Kabi centre will be operational 24 hours a day to meet demand from hospitals. The Derrimut facility will be built with a grant from the State Government. “The Victorian Government is pleased to have utilised our $55 million Victoria’s Technology Plan for the Future - Biotechnology to partner with Fresenius Kabi and establish this cuttingedge facility here in Victoria,” Mr Napthine said. Technology Minister Gordon Rich-Phillips said the announcement has confirmed Victoria’s reputation as a world-class hub of pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Council puts pokies operators on notice Sentenced after club stabbing By ALESHA CAPONE

BRIMBANK City Council has launched an attempt to cut back on the impact of gambling within highly-disadvantaged communities. Last Tuesday, the council’s administrators John Watson and Jane Nathan voted in favour of adopting a new planning scheme amendment after a period of public consultation. The scheme recommends new pokies machines and venues should not be located in suburban activity centres or within 400 metres of Brimbank’s train stations.

The amendment also discourages increasing or relocating gaming machines in areas of high socio-economic disadvantage. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the southern area of St Albans is the most-disadvantaged suburb in the municipality and eighth highest in the state. The northern part of St Albans is ranked ninth on Victoria’s most disadvantaged list, with Kings Park, Sunshine North and Sunshine West also included in the top 20 most poor areas. Figures from the Victoria Com-

mission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation show more than $137 million was lost by players on Brimbank’s pokies machines during 2012-’13, the highest rate out of all Victorian municipalities. Brimbank also has more than 945 pokies machines, the third-highest amount in the state behind the cities of Greater Geelong and Monash. Although Brimbank’s new stance on pokies venues is tough, VCAT will still possess the ultimate power to decide whether new pokies will be allowed within the area. The new amendment states

Brimbank is located in a partially capped gaming region, but has a high density of gaming machines and a higher-than-state average level of gambling expenditure. “While the Gambling Policy and Action Plan recognises the allowable uses of electronic gambling, we have to balance this against the need to also ensure the health and wellbeing of the community - and this amendment to the Planning Scheme will put the council in a better position to achieve this,” Mr Watson said.

Crossing crisis slammed By ALESHA CAPONE MORE than 1100 people have signed a petition calling for an overpass or underpass to be built at the Melton Highway level crossing. Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins has submitted the petition of 1139 signatures to State Parliament. She said the crossing’s boom gates are down for 52 minutes every two hours during peak times. The RACV’s roads and traffic manager, Dave Jones, has labelled the crossing as the “number one location” in Sydenham and Taylors Lakes for congestion. A Facebook group titled ‘Melton Highway NEEDS an Underpass/Overpass’ has gathered more than 2500 supporters. Ms Hutchins spoke to Star last week after she visited residents of Victoria St, which runs adjacent to the Watergardens railway line. “These residents are telling me they can’t get out of their own street in the mornings onto the Melton Highway due to the sheer volume of traffic backed up,” she said. “They said it’s been noticeably different in the 12 months since the line was electrified (to Sunbury). “What I’m surprised by is the reaction and overwhelming public anger at the traffic and the problems created by it.” She said the petition would be ongoing and a committee of residents hopes to meet in midMarch to get a campaign underway. Ms Hutchins said she hopes the campaign will lead to Labor putting the crossing on a list of 50 they have promised to fix, if the party wins November’s election. Dorian Papadopoulos, who started the ‘Melton Highway NEEDS an Underpass/Overpass’ Facebook page, said he has been amazed by the tremendous response from the petitions. “It just goes to show that our entire community agree that this is an unacceptably dangerous and frustrating level crossing that needs urgent attention and action,” he said. To sign the petition or join the committee see https://www.facebook.com/meltonhighwaytrafficproblems or head into Ms Hutchin’s office at Aquagardens Shopping Centre, Sydenham. A spokesperson for Roads Minister Terry Mulder said the government has outlined more than $400 million towards removing level crossings across Melbourne.

A YOUNG man has been sentenced after a stabbing at the St Albans Football Club during a wake attended by more than 100 people. The offender has been sentenced by the County Court to 26 months’ imprisonment with 15 months to be served, before he will be eligible for parole. However, the 22-year-old, who pleaded guilty at a directions hearing in September last year, has already served more than 230 days in presentence detention. The offender was aged 21 at the time of the stabbing, which occurred on 29 August 2012 at the wake of a man who had committed suicide. The court heard the offender was charged with recklessly causing injury, after seeing his male victim outside the football club. The victim, who owed money to his attacker, told the offender he was in financial difficulty before they began to argue. The offender then produced a weapon, which witnesses described as a “kitchen knife”, and lunged at his victim. The victim attempted to punch the offender and as the two struggled, they fell on the footpath. The victim was injured in the groin area and taken to The Royal Melbourne Hospital to be treated for a severed femoral artery. The court heard the offender was arrested the next day and confessed to the stabbing, but was unable to tell the police where the knife was located. The court heard the offender suffered from attention deficit disorder, anxiety and depression and was found guilty of using cannabis in 2011. The County Court’s Judge Parrish said he took these illnesses into account when sentencing the offender, who had good prospects of rehabilitation, and made a full submission to police.

Brimbank City News the dynamic centre of the West

Message from your council Council has a strong focus on community wellbeing and at our last Council meeting we were delighted to adopt the Brimbank Community Learning Strategy 2014–2017, which supports learning in all life phases. This Community Learning Strategy supports lifelong learning and recognises the important role learning plays as a driver for positive economic and social change. The draft strategy had been released for community comment earlier this year and builds on the work of the previous Community Learning Strategy 2010-2013. L–R Jane Nathan, Administrator and John Watson, Chair of Administrators

Through a shared vision and partnership approach, the Brimbank Community Learning Strategy 2014–2017 will support and facilitate learning in all forms to drive the social, economic and cultural life of the community. At the same meeting the Council also adopted Amendment C41 to the Brimbank Planning Scheme, which will introduce changes to the gambling policies and objectives within the Brimbank Municipal Strategic Statement (MSS). While the Gambling Policy and Action Plan recognises the allowable uses of electronic gambling, Council has to balance this against the need to also ensure the health

and wellbeing of the community. The amendment will enable Council to assess planning permit applications against considerations of where the Electronic Gambling Machine (EGM) would be located, how many EGMs are already in the area, and how the venue may afect the communities around it. Council meetings are held fortnightly on a Tuesday and the Agenda is placed on our website the Friday prior. All meetings are open to the public. The next meeting is on Tuesday 11 March, 7pm at the Keilor Municipal Oice.

Cottage view By ALESHA CAPONE THE doors of a historic cottage in Keilor Park will be thrown open to the public on 22 March. The 2014 Harrick’s Cottage Open Day will allow visitors to see an Irish immigrant settler’s hut, which was built in Keilor. The cottage was first home to James and Bridget Harrick who settled as Keilor tenant farmers in 1861 and went on to have 10 children. The open day will continue the Keilor Historical Society’s work of 2011 when the Keilor cenotaph was refurbished and four plaques added. The plaques commemorate those who served in World War I and II -- two nurses and two

army units located on the site of the Keilor Municipal Offices between 1942 and 1945. The historical society’s president Susan Jennison and vicepresident Dorothy Minkoff said they had researched service records, to draw a picture of the men and two women listed as serving Keilor during war. Their investigations have focused on those mentioned on the Keilor honour-roll. “I think one was mentioned in dispatches and another one received a military medal for bravery,” Ms Minkoff said. “Keilor would have been a microcosm of other areas at the time.” Ms Jennison said the society

had tried to portray “the enormous challenges and adventures these people had” from a regional perspective. “We’ve been able to see a copy of the letter one of the men sent back,” she said. “He described being in the trenches and then went back to England, which is how I think he got mail out. Usually, it was heavily censored it did not get through.” Ferguson Plarre bakehouses will even provide some delicious eclairs free for the event. The cottage open day will be on 22 March midday to 4pm, Harrick’s Cottage, Harrick Rd, Keilor Park. Entry: gold coin donation.

Council’s spray on graffiti cost BRIMBANK City Council will spend $75,000 across the next two years to remove graffiti from a Regional Rail Link noise barrier. The noise barrier will be installed between Forrest St, in Ardeer, and Anderson Rd, near the Sunshine train station, to help mitigate sounds from the increased amount of trains travelling on the RRL. Although the Regional Rail Link Authority will pay for the installation of the wall, Brimbank ratepayers will fund its ongoing maintenance and upkeep.

Residents have protested against the proposed noise walls since 2013 and said they would prefer other anti-noise measures. At last week’s council meeting, Brimbank administrator Jane Nathan expressed anger at having to spend residents’ money on cleaning up graffiti across the municipality. The council has extended its graffiti removal and inspection contract, after allocating more than $230,000 for the task across 2012/13. The council will continue with the contract for another two years, bringing its total value to more than $1.6 million

- much to Ms Nathan’s chagrin. “I cannot contain myself, Mr Chairman, on the community’s money being spent on removing illegal graffiti,” she said last Tuesday. “This is just a terrible waste of the community’s money.” The chief administrator John Watson agreed with Ms Nathan and said the funds “could be better spent”. The council runs legal street art projects with youths and removes graffiti from 30 priority sites across the municipality, with inspections carried out on a fortnightly and weekly basis. To report graffiti, contact the council on 9249 4000.

Cut noise call MORE than 870 people have signed a petition urging the Regional Rail Link Authority to act on noise and vibration caused by increased trains running between Sunshine and Deer Park. Derrimut MP Telmo Languiller has submitted the petition to the Legislative Assembly of Victoria. The document urges the RRLA to immediately meet with Brimbank City Council “with a view to implementing appropriate noise protection, including vibration/freight noise, as a condition of the government funding of the project”. “When the regional rail project is complete, there will be up to 18 trains every hour through Ardeer and Deer Park stations,” Mr Languiller said. He said the RRL’s Sunshine to Deer Park section has been

recognised as the link with the greatest residential density which will be most affected by increased noise. Mr Languiller said the RRLA has proposed noise walls as the only solution and refused to discuss options such as earth mounding and lowering of the rail line. Mr Languiller has also asked for grade separations at the Fitzgerald-Forrest Rd and Mount Derrimut-Tilburn Rd to be implemented to deal with the increase to traffic congestion. “While our community is being asked to cope with the increase in rail traffic, there will be no increase at all to the number of trains stopping at Ardeer stations,” he said. RRLA spokesperson, Bob Neilson, said in applying the State Government’s Passenger Rail Infrastructure Policy, RRL had been required to consider practical, reasonable and cost-

starcommunity.com.au

effective noise treatments. “Regional Rail Link Authority assessed noise impacts of the project and considered a range of options including noise walls, earth mounds, rail cuttings and low-level trackside barriers,” he said. “Noise barriers were found to provide the best noise mitigation solution and broader community benefits, reducing noise inside properties and in surrounding areas. “Noise barriers are a proven engineering solution and are used worldwide to effectively mitigate rail and road noise. “Regional Rail Link Authority conducted an extensive community engagement program about the project’s application of the government noise policy and the planned noise barrier. “This process is now complete and construction of the noise barriers is underway.” Local news, sport & services online

Dance and documentary INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day will be celebrated in Sunshine this Friday with dancing and a documentary. Women’s Health West (WHW) has organised the event in conjunction with Brimbank City Council, Maribyrnong City Council and Phoenix Youth Centre. The event will feature free performances from the BBreaks Dance Program, Bitsat Aberh, Grace Vanilau and other artists from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, with supper provided. Afterwards, a fund-raising screening of the documentary, ‘I Am A Girl’ will be held with all proceeds going to Women’s Health West.

The event will fundraise for WHW to move from their Footscray offices to a new building where they can continue to provide services to women and children experiencing family violence. The not-for-profit group works with women from Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melbourne, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham. WHW CEO Dr Robyn Gregory said, ‘I Am A Girl’ portrayed stories of strength and courage through a day in the life of six young women around the world. ‘Women everywhere are more likely than men to be under-valued, under-paid and unemployed, victims of family

violence and to be single parents,” she said. “Intimate partner violence is the major cause of death for Victorian women aged 15-44. “These are some of the reasons that International Women’s Day is a vital opportunity to stop and consider what we must still achieve, but also to celebrate our many accomplishments.” International Women’s Day will be on Friday 7 March Visy Cares Hub, 80B Harvester Rd, Sunshine. ‘I Am A Girl’ tickets will be on at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Tickets: adults $25 and concession $15. Bookings at www.whwest.org.au/iwd-2014

By ALESHA CAPONE THE State Government’s two main parties have butted heads on a petition which more than 200 MPs have signed, in favour of more funding for a children’s service at Sunshine Hospital. Keilor Labor MP Natalie Hutchins has tabled a petition of 210 signatures in parliament, advocating for the Children’s Allied Health Service (CAHS). The petition said the CAHS was no longer accepting multidisciplinary assessment referrals for preschool children with disabilities starting school this year. Last year, Star revealed Western Health sent a letter to kindergarten services, advising them CAHS would cease accepting referrals due to in-

creased demand. The CAHS provides physiotherapy, speech pathology and other medical services to children with autism and other diagnoses. Ms Hutchins said the families of children who miss out on CAHS appointments were instead spending about $1500 on private assessments. Last year, Brimbank City Council’s administrators voted to raise the issue at a meeting of the Municipal Association of Victoria. The council agenda said CAHS’s “inability to provide services is directly related to the growth that the western region of Melbourne is experiencing and their funding which has not been revisited since 2008”.

However, a spokesperson for the Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development, Wendy Lovell, said the government already provided more than $1 million annually to Western Health “to provide specialist health services for children who have difficulties in one or more areas of development before they start school”. “There has been no reduction in this funding,” the spokesperson said. “All children who started school this year and needed an assessment, received one. “Western Health continues to provide assessments for any child referred. “The department continues to work with Western Health in 2014 to meet demand for assessments.”

A MODEST man from East Keilor has been nominated for the Australian of the Year competition. Almost two years ago, Michael Gallus started the not-forprofit organisation Footys4All which provides free sporting balls to underprivileged and socially displaced children. A Facebook fan of the foundation recently nominated Mr Gallus for the Australian of the Year 2015 awards. “It’s just amazing and it’s great news for everyone who has been involved with the foundation,” Mr Gallus said. “It’s just really humbling and a great honour to be even nominated after the foundation started 22 months ago. “My role is a minor one to the organisation, to link people in together and go to meetings and then they can do a bit for the community.” Mr Gallus said he could not run Footys4All without support from his family, sponsors, sports clubs, politicians, Moonee Valley City Council and volunteers. “It’s certainly not me, it’s all the people out there,” he said. Mr Gallus said his wife Amanda and children Thomas, Lily and Benjamin had devoted much of their own time to assisting the foundation. Mr Gallus, who is also a

Mr Gallus also hopes to take the program to America. “It’s just exciting times ahead,” he said. “My fingers are crossed that we’ll hopefully we able to take it to the next level.” See www.footys4all.com.au for more information.

APPROVALS SHOW DENSITY INCREASE

ESTHER LAUAKI

THE number of medium density home approvals, including units, townhouses and semidetached houses, in Victoria has more than doubled over the past five years, a recent report shows. The housing density report, sanctioned by Bankwest, revealed that 23,390 medium density approvals were granted in Victoria in the past 12 months, a staggering 109.5 per cent growth rate on the 11,164 approvals five years ago. Despite this substantial increase, neighbouring New South Wales topped the nation’s charts for the highest proportion of medium density approvals at 34 per cent followed by Victoria at 30 per cent. This is a reversal on the previous year’s findings when Victoria contained the largest proportion of medium density homes. The report also revealed that Victoria has seen a marked increase in medium

density dwellings over the long-term, with the proportion of approvals rising to 45.6 per cent in 2013. This is well above the 20 year average of 27.4 per cent which suggests that Victoria is experiencing a profound change in the composition of its overall housing stock. Bankwest executive general manager in retail Mark Reid said NSW overtaking Victoria as the state with the largest proportion of medium density housing approvals in Australia may be deceptive at face value. “The recent change masks the dramatic climb in the number of units, townhouses and semi-detached houses across Victoria recorded over the last two decades.” Close to one in four dwellings in Victoria are considered medium density. In the state’s capital Melbourne, some 28.9 per cent of dwellings are medium density, which is

slightly above the nation’s capital city average of 27.6 per cent. The report shows there is a clear long-term trend of Australians turning to medium density homes. Since 1985, the proportion of medium density dwellings approvals has annually averaged 30.6 per cent of total dwelling approvals. This figure increased to 34.3 per cent over the past 10 years and jumped to 40.1 per cent in the past two years alone. Other key findings show an impressive 46 out of 65 local areas in Victoria have had increasing shares of medium density housing compared to dwelling stock in the past two years. Of all Victoria’s local government areas, the biggest increase has been in Maribyrnong where close to 90 per cent of new approvals were medium density in the past five years.

New colours make autumn stand used by homeowners this autumn, drawing on the global fusion of tribal aesthetics and exotic mix borrowed from many cultures,” Andrea said. “We are also seeing that whites are warming up in the forecast.” Creating a perfect autumn sanctuary can be easily achieved by adding rich and lush textiles together with earthy and warm hues or bold block colours. Trending colours this year include hues from the recently

released Digital Nomads palette, as part of Dulux’s 2014 Colour Forecast ‘Future Tribes’. “The single standout is Dulux Mexican Standoff, an exciting colour from Dulux that will instantly invigorate your space with a pop of colour,” says Andrea. Andrea’s tips for homeowners using colour this autumn are to introduce block colours in bright and deep hues for a quick impact in the space. “Don’t be afraid to combine

DULUX predicts that blended shades of orange and pink will reveal a contemporary change from a traditional autumnal palette, inspired by nature, as seen in previous years. Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr says while golds and warmer hues of rich reds and faded oranges will still be popular, there is an emerging trend for brighter bursts of colour. “Hues in punchy oranges and pinks are predicted to be

these colours and introduce soft furnishings in darker and moody hues.” Top interior colours for Autumn Dulux Mexican Standoff is an invigorating colour, a contemporary change from traditional autumnal hues, Dulux Goldie is a fun and bold colour that creates warmth. Combine with a combination of deeper reds to enrich the space. Dulux Morocco is an earthinspired hue that is luscious and can establish a sense of wellbeing. Dulux Red Stop is a rich, deep red that is perfect with dark timbers. To help create an inviting space, Dulux Curd is an ochreinspired white that complements bold and rich colours. What’s not to love about mango season? Scoring that sweet golden flesh into little pop-out squares and feeling the juice dribble down my chin almost makes me feel like I’m holidaying on a tropical island in Far North Queensland. One of our favourite varieties - the Honey Gold mango - is grown by Queensland-based Pinata Farms in nearly every mainland state, including Victoria, and is now being imported to Russia. Fittingly, it was recently pictured about as far away from its tropical homeland as it could get … in the snowy surrounds of Sochi, giving our Aussie Winter Olympians a little taste of home. So in keeping with the mango theme (and given our special guest Ivo is a barbecue specialist), this week’s recipe is a lovely, fresh salsa from Taste.com.au that’s the perfect partner for grilled meats.

MANGO AND AVOCADO SALSA 1 just-ripe mango, cheeks removed, peeled and finely chopped 1 avocado, halved, stone removed, peeled and finely chopped Half a red onion, finely chopped 1 long fresh red chilli, deseeded and chopped 2 tablespoons finely chopped coriander 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice. Combine ingredients and serve. Thanks again for all your wonderful emails. Going nuts for chestnuts “When roasting, all you need to do is make a small incision on the flat side of the chestnut to prevent bursting. Then roast in the oven, on the barbeque or under a grill, and peel while still warm,” he says. “Once chestnuts are roasted and peeled try them sprinkled with porcini mushroom powder, made by putting dried porcini and a pinch of salt in a spice grinder. “In a similar way, you can make a powder using dried oregano and fried capers. “Or simply dust lightly with a combination of smoked paprika, a little dried chilli flakes and salt. “Perfect with icy cold pro-

WITH the chestnut season kicking off in March, Australians are set to be inspired by this versatile, easy-to-cook nut this autumn. “Many people think of chestnuts as a European snack enjoyed in winter. However, Australian growers produce more than 1500 tonnes of chestnuts each year,” says chef Stefano Manfredi, of Osteria Balla Manfredi at The Star, Sydney, and Manfredi at Bells restaurant at Killcare Heights, NSW. “I grew up eating chestnuts and love to snack on them. Preparing and cooking chestnuts is an easy, no-fuss process.

secco,” Manfredi said. Unlike other nuts, chestnuts are low in calories and are cholesterol free. A low GI food, chestnuts are digested slowly and so keep the body satisfied for longer. They are also a great source of vitamins C, B1 and B2 and are gluten free. When selecting chestnuts, look for nuts that feel heavy for their size, with undamaged, firm shells. To avoid chestnuts drying out, store in an airtight container, paper bag or perforated plastic bag in the crisper compartment of the refrigerator

Crows full of fight

shorts FOOTSCRAY Edgewater opener Dean Russ is poised to become the 840th player to represent the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers in first-class cricket after he was selected in the 12-man squad to face Tasmania in a Bupa Sheffield Shield match at the MCG this week. Russ, who turned 28 on Thursday, has struck 641 runs, at an average of 45.8, in Bartercard Premier Cricket this season while also impressing in the Toyota Futures League, where he is the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 350 runs. Russ is joined in the squad by Peter Handscomb, who amassed 212 in his previous match for St Kilda on February 15. They replace Cameron White and Glenn Maxwell in the side who are both in South Africa with the Australian Twenty20 side. The match will see a return of day/night Sheffield Shield cricket after it was first trialled in the late 1990s. “It is all a little bit surreal at the moment,” Russ said. “It is fantastic. I am looking forward to getting stuck into it all on Monday.”

Mark Brown swings hard at a ball during his innings for Sunshine on the weekend. 115795 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI “It was fantastic to get the win,” Seagulls’ captain Craig Sheedy said. “Ideally we needed an outright to give ourselves any chance of making the finals and we knew we weren’t going to do that half-way through the day. “It was going to be a battle to

knock them over and Matthew Inness bowled beautifully and got us over the line. “On a wicket that had nothing in it for the bowlers, he just stepped up and won the game for us.” The weekend’s result leaves the Seagulls in 10th spot on the VSDCA

East/West ladder with four wins for the season. Sunshine now sits in 13th after winning two games. In what will be the final round of the season this week, Williamstown will take on Noble Park while Sunshine will meet Oakleigh.

Storm crashes out of flag contention By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE cricketing gods seemed to be conspiring against Sydenham Hillside on the final day of the homeand-away season in the NWMCA’s Luscombe Shield on Saturday. The Storm, needing a win and other results to go its way coming into the final two-dayer of the summer ahead of the finals, gave itself every chance after a stellar day against competition frontrunner Pascoe Vale Central last week. The hosting Storm had bowled the visitors out for just 111 on day one before contributing 2/57 to its run chase in the final 26 overs of the day’s play. Coming into the second weekend of the crucial clash, Sydenham Hillside will have fancied its chances of getting the remaining 55 runs with eight wickets still in hand. However, with the Pascoe Vale Central attack getting its act together on the second day, the Storm’s middle order crumbled to ultimately fall an agonising six runs short of victory. As it turned out, though, the result ended up proving irrelevant to the Storm’s chances of sneaking into the top four after crosstown rival Kealba Green Gully failed to get the job done against Gladstone Park on Saturday.

By LIAM TWOMEY WILLIAMSTOWN continued its impressive run of form in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association with a 45-run victory against Sunshine on Saturday. The contest resumed with Williamstown needing eight wickets to claim the win after batting first on day one. The Seagulls were 5/232 when Craig Sheedy declared the innings over in search of wickets. He was rewarded with gun opening bowler Matthew Inness taking two scalps and leaving Sunshine 2/15 at stumps. Despite being in the box seat after day one, Williamstown was forced to fight against a gutsy Sunshine outfit. The loss of two early wickets put the pressure on the Crows but they were able to hang in throughout the afternoon. Eventually the burden of wickets in hand and a climbing required run rate became too great as Williamstown claimed the final wicket in the 88th over. Inness continued his outstanding match, taking another four wickets on day two to finish with the figures of 6/39 from 25 overs. He was well supported by Mitchell Ferrie who also chipped in with two scalps of his own. The remaining wickets were taken by Nathan Bratby and Samuel Davis.

Sydenham Hillside missed out on a finals spot by the skin of its teeth on Saturday. 111627 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT The second-placed Cougars already guaranteed a finals berth - couldn’t defend their total of 143 from seven days earlier. The game came down to the final over with Gladstone Park clinging onto its final wicket - eventually getting the job done to finish at 9/146

with just four balls to spare. Kealba’s Andrew Webb and Matthew Nadzielski each claimed three wickets, while Hillside Essendon District Football League premiership player Jarrod Catania got two scalps of his own.

Sydenham Hillside finished just two points shy of the top four and will have all of winter to get ready for next season, while the Cougars will get another crack at Gladstone Park at Green Gully Reserve this weekend.

WEST Newport has survived the cut and will play in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf finals series after easily accounting for Gellibrand on Saturday. Finishing just one point ahead of Melton Centrals to sneak into the top four, West Newport only needed 52 overs to ensure first innings points - making 226 in response to Gellibrand’s 141 from day one. This weekend West Newport is due to play Williamstown Colts, who finished on top of the ladder with nine wins and 60 points. Bellbridge will host Grand United in the other semi-final to be played this Saturday and Sunday. Meanwhile in the WDCA’s A Grade Matting competition, Point Cook’s superior percentage got it across the line over Williamstown Imperials for the final spot in the top four. Both clubs ended the season on 39 points, with Melton Centrals, WLSC Marshalls and Wyndham Vale also making the cut ahead of semi-final weekend. SPOTSWOOD has missed out on the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s North Division finals series after failing to get past Laverton on the final day of the home-and-away season on Saturday. On day one of the clash at Laverton Park, the host posted a formidable 250 runs before Spotswood survived three overs out in the middle to go into day two at 0/1. On Saturday the Woodsmen faced another 44 overs but could never really get going with the bat, falling well short of their target on their way to just 134. Spotswood finished fifth on the table, almost 10 points shy of fourth-placed and finals-bound Doutta Stars. Meanwhile in the VTCA’s North A1 Division, Seddon upset Taylors Lakes at home to finish fourth on the table, and will play the Altona Roosters in this weekend’s semi-final. Taylors Lakes and Sunshine Druids will also play for a spot in the grand final. A BUMPER opening weekend of blockbuster fixtures will kick-start Football Federation Victoria’s brand new National Premier Leagues competition - which is set to begin Thursday week. Melbourne Knights, Green Gully and Werribee City will be the West’s three NPL representatives, while Sunshine George Cross and St Albans will feature in the NPL1 competition. The Knights will start their NPL campaign next Friday night at home to Northcote City - before spending the entire month of April at Knights Stadium - including a round-three battle with Werribee City. The following day Green Gully and the Bees will face each other at the Cavaliers’ Green Gully Reserve for their round one clash. Also in action on the first Saturday of the new season are Sunshine George Cross and St Albans in NPL1. The Georgies will host Brunswick City at Chaplin Reserve, while the Saints will hit the road to take on Springvale White Eagles. The two Brimbank neighbours will meet at Chaplin Reserve in round five.

Skill in Dogs’ progress By LIAM TWOMEY FROM the moment he walked into the Footscray Edgewater Cricket Club, Steve Chapman knew he had some talent on his hands. Having previously coached Dandenong to a premiership, Chapman signed with the Bulldogs before the 2013/14 season and wasted no time taking his winning ways across Melbourne to Farnsworth Avenue. Initially, Footscray was the surprise packet of the competition after a hot start to the season. But this was no flash in the pan, and going into the final round, a win will see the club finish the home-and-away competition on top of the ladder. “When I was talking about the job initially, I couldn’t put my finger on why Footscray hadn’t been involved in finals,” Chapman said. “I felt that if we were anywhere near what I believed the side could be then we would make the finals. I never thought we could be as high as second or indeed, if we finish the last round with a win, that we could finish on top.” With finals just one week away and despite Footscray’s place in the post-season looking likely since the opening rounds of the season, the Bulldogs haven’t been getting ahead of themselves. Apart from a couple of passing comments, a finals campaign hasn’t been spoken about in great detail among the players and coaching staff. “I haven’t let the guys and I haven’t wanted them to (speak about finals),” Chapman said. “I wanted them to talk about what was coming up on Saturday and talk about literally the first session. “I didn’t want them to get distracted or get ahead of themselves. I have got a group of lads here that haven’t had a lot of finals experience or success. I think it is important to keep their feet on the ground and ask them to consider what is coming up rather than what potentially could hap-

pen in x amount of weeks’ time.” Footscray will find out its round one finals opponent at the conclusion of its match with St Kilda. last month and then followed it up with a brilliant 95 when taking on Camberwell. Chapman is confident that more runs will follow for the rising star. “I think he (Dean) has come of age,” Chapman said. “There are a lot of people around the traps that reckon this kid will play for Victoria within a couple of years. He was the best under-19 cricketer

going around in the country a couple of years ago. He has always had it in him. I think it was just a case of him working it out for himself. “The 95 runs that he got were every bit as classy as the hundred he got against Dandenong. It was a completely different set of circumstances from the Dandenong game where his ability to hit the gaps and be fluent was every bit as skilful as his ability to leave in the game at Camberwell.”

Thunder rumbles By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Keilor Thunder’s Division Two men’s team may well have a wealth of fresh new faces, but the expectations for the upcoming Big V season remain intact. The coach who took the Thunder to last year’s grand final series, Peter Jukes, has moved on, while a number of senior players from the 2013 roster will not be in action this season. Playmakers Matthew Jukes and Brent Radoslovic have both chosen to ply their trade in Division One, while Andrew Freeman will be overseas for the next 12 months. Incoming coach Steve Toy admits Keilor’s recruiting over the summer has been a little lean. However, Toy has backed his younger brigade to push for a successful campaign in 2014, telling Star another finals appearance will be the goal later this year. “We’re still hoping to make finals, absolutely, and we believe if we can make finals we can give it a real good shake,” Toy said. “We’ve got a good group of guys and they seem to be gelling pretty well at this stage, but it’ll just take a little while on the

court and once we find that, I think we’ll be very hard to beat. “We’ve got a good mixture of size and speed now, so it’ll obviously take a little while but I think we’ll be thereabouts.” Keilor’s inclusions have mostly come from within, with a number of the new senior players graduating out of the club’s successful Youth League program. Promising youngsters Scott Drysdale, James Webster, Mitchell Lukey and Joel Smith can all expect decent minutes on the floor this year, while Carlo Grossi and Dusan Skenderovicback have also come on board. The Thunder will open its 2014 Division Two season on the road to the Coburg Giants on Sunday week, before spending the next three weeks on home court against Western Port, Pakenham and Shepparton. Toy said the focus for the first month will be to establish a fast brand of Thunder basketball. “It’ll be up-tempo, it’ll be high intensity in the defence and we’ll be looking to push the ball down the court as much as we can,” Toy said. “So hopefully it’ll be up and down the court pretty quickly.”

Andrew Freeman will not be available to play for the Keilor Thunder this season. 97098 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT

All not lost as Deer Park’s pennant title hopes wane By LIAM TWOMEY DEER Park’s quest for a premiership in the Bowls Victoria division one Pennant competition came to an end on Saturday after going down to Kew Heights. The Parkers were defeated 83-67 after finishing the home and away season on top of the ladder. However, with the club hoping to strengthen its lower grades before making a charge to Premier Division, Deer Park president Ray Franksen was still happy with his side’s season. “They (Kew Heights) just bowled better than us,” he said. “We finished on top and we have had a good year. To be honest, it is not going to do us any harm to have another year in this division. “If we would have won yesterday, we wouldn’t have been promoted anyway,” Franksen said. “You have to win another few games so they make it very hard to get to premier league, as they should.” Kew Heights went on to win the division, defeating Werribee the following day. It wasn’t all bad news for Deer Park with the club’s second side, division five, progressing to the grand final. The strong showing from the Parkers’ lower grades also means that the club will enjoy a stronger set-up next season, with teams in divisions four, six and seven. “We are not disappointed, we are more than ready to fire

Ray Franksen is taking a number of positives from Deer Park’s season in the Bowls Victoria Pennant competition. 108220 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI up for the grand final for our second side,” Franksen said. “With the sides going up

and the performances across the board, the season is an absolute positive.”

Riding crest of wave By LIAM TWOMEY CITY West continued its outstanding start to the Victorian Netball League season with a victory against Monash University Storm on Wednesday night. The Falcons were in front from the get go and maintained a healthy lead over the Storm throughout the next three quarters. But it was in the final term when City West produced some of its best netball. Marg Lind’s side scored 17 goals and restricted Monash to just six to secure the 17-goal win. The result capped off a busy seven days for the Falcons after they also enjoyed wins against Fed Uni Ballarat Pride (61-26) and DC North East Blaze (5935). Lind was rapt with how her side was able to handle its busy schedule. “We have been performing pretty well and they were certainly solid in all three games which is pleasing,” she said. “I felt like they would be fatigued with three games in under seven days, so we actually didn’t train at all in the sevenday period. “A lot of the girls also had state training too so we were pretty mindful of that. Essentially, those who are in the state team, they actually had another game as well with the state team. “We said to them that if their performance against Blaze on Saturday night was solid, which meant we had three wins under our belt, we wouldn’t train them on Sunday, which we didn’t do, and I think that paid off.” The trio of victories maintains City West’s unbeaten start

Maggie Lind (shown playing in last year’s VNL grand-final) is part of an undefeated City West Falcons outfit. 103257 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT to the VNL season with the Falcons on top of the table with a 4-0 record. When round five of the season gets underway this week, the Falcons will take on thirdplaced Geelong. The game will have an interesting dynamic, with Geelong now being coached by former Falcon Gerard Murphy. “I think he (Murphy) has done some good work with

them and we certainly won’t be underestimating them,” Lind said. “Even less so because he has come from our stable and he knows how we run. That is going to be a little bit of an advantage to him, but I guess the same applies to us. We know his coaching methods. I’m hoping to get another win, so that we go into the break with a clean slate.”

Memo councils: make grounds available LOCAL footy is back with VFL practice matches, the WRFL interleague squad in full training for the metropolitan championships and my mobile ringing a heck of a lot more. Some clubs are telling me they are having issues with ground availability, even those that are not shared with cricket. I don’t understand why some councils have this negative attitude. The grounds are built to be used, not looked at. We are trying to promote participation in sport. Why make it so difficult? The other point of contention is the time it takes to get some very small jobs, like covering a cricket wicket, done. The frustration this causes is most unnecessary and does not bode well for the rest of the year. West Footscray Football Club is holding its season launch this Thursday at the Pound Cafe at Whitten Oval from 7pm. Western Bulldogs Director Barry Hall and WRFL guru Steve Thom will be speaking along with Trevor Davies the senior coach. Good luck to the Roosters for 2014. MIXED fortunes for the VFL sides with Werribee having a narrow win over Box Hill Hawks and Williamstown losing by a few goals to Essendon. The results mean little and both clubs will be happy to have the first run under their belt. The rivals meet this Saturday at Aegis Park with the Development squad at 10am followed by the seniors at 1pm. GMHBA Geelong Regional Manager Deryn Mobbs joined the Board of the Werribee football club at last week’s AGM which also saw John Nicol returned as President. Werribee has also confirmed that its round 8 game against Richmond will be played at the home of the Torquay Tigers, Spring Creek Reserve on Saturday May 24th. INTERESTING times in local cricket, Werribee lost its first First XI game for the year, despite some batting heroics from Tim O’Brien who made an unbeaten 69 in the run chase. They play second placed Bayswater this weekend in a one dayer at Avalon Airport Oval. Interesting letter I saw from Daniel Gaylor, the President of Grand United Cricket Club, to the Williamstown District Cricket Association calling for massive changes to keep the competition alive. West Newport and Willy Imps are leaving the competition next year and all clubs are finding it hard to field teams. Grand United a powerhouse club has lost three teams in two seasons. Daniel has a very strong point, I hope he gets a hearing. Adam Contessa bobbed up with a six wicket performance and two knocks over 30, to help the Yarraville Club CC make the finals in the VTCA. They will play Greenvale in the semi final this weekend at Greenvale. WESTERN Athletics is hosting an Athletics Victoria shield meet for the first time ever in Wyndham at the Vic Uni Aths track in Hoppers Lane this Saturday from 1.30pm. Track events include the 100 metre, 1500 metre, 400 metres, hurdle and steeplechase. The newly installed pole vault will highlight the field events including javelin, discuss and long jump. Entry is free and you can see many leading western suburbs athletes including Morgan Mitchell who is preparing for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Other notables include Alan Cook (1500 World Champion for his age) and Anne Cross (2000 Olympian). More than 25 of the juniors competing Saturday will be off to Sydney next week for the National Championships. SUNSHINE coach Earl Byrne is the first to admit he could have gone about a few things a little differently this summer. His Eagles never really took flight in Summer League Baseball’s Division One, finishing the 25game season last week with just two wins to their credit. While injuries did play their part throughout the summer, Byrne told Star his first year with the Eagles was “OK” in parts. “There are probably some little things that I need to fix up, personally, with a few things at training that I need to do differently with hitting and just keeping the boys a little bit more busy,” Byrne said. “I felt that I wasn’t on top of my game with that, but that’s easily fixed and other than that, on game days I thought I performed OK, and I got the respect of the boys.” Byrne entered into a two-year deal to coach the Eagles at the start of the summer, and after meeting with the club board last week, he will fulfil the second year of his commitment. “We just talked about what we need to do a little better next year,” Byrne explained. “So it was more or less just making sure that we’re all on the same page and we all want to head in the right direction.” Byrne did take some positives out of the season, noting the efforts of import pitcher Chris

The Sunshine Eagles had the worst record in Division One baseball this summer, but it is not yet known if they’ll be dropped back into Division Two next season. 113415 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT Prokupek, left fielder Matthew Davis and youngster Allister Lovelock before a broken collarbone stifled his season. “Chris Prokupek did really well for us and he was quite handy - we just didn’t score enough runs for him,” Byrne said. “Matty Davis was pretty good for us most of the year with the bat and in the field - he was one of our main hitters for the year.

“And Allister Lovelock, before he hurt himself, was playing really, really well. “He’s only an 18-year-old kid but he’s proved for himself that he can play first division baseball, which is good for him.” Under normal circumstances Sunshine will have been relegated into Division Two, but with Baseball Victoria tipped to re-vamp the Summer League during the off-season, the Eagles’ fate is not yet known.
