Spokesperson for the Lilydale to Warburton Railtrail Friends group Phil Wallens said the idea has great support from the group which sees it as a very positive project that would potentially take advantage of the unique features of the Warburton area.

Mr Wallens said he believed it was a project that needed the Warburton community to get behind it and ensure that the political will was there to see the necessary funding come through to make it happen.

SUPPORTERS of a world-class Mountain Bike Park for Warburton say it could reap benefits that would include increased tourism, employment opportunities, health and transport for locals and visitors.

A feasibility study has been completed for the proposed park and is expected to come up for consideration by Yarra Ranges Council in April.

The proposal is an initative of Parks Victoria under its Healthy Parks, Healthy People program and has in-

volved input by council’s Sport and Recreation Department, Arts Victoria, DEPI, and stakeholders including Warburton Chamber of Commerce, the Yarra Ranges Mountain Bikers (YRMB) and the Lilydale-Warburton Rail Trail Friends group.

Warburton member of the YRMB Damian Auton said specialist mountain bike parks were popular around the world offering opportunities for everyone for beginners to serious, competitive mountain bikers.

Stacks of hay

By KATH GANNAWAY LANDOWNERS in the Yarra Valley have responded generously to the call for hay from fireravaged farming communities following the February fires across the state.

Minister for Agriculture Peter Walsh called on anyone with fodder to spare, or agistment, to help out after the fires destroyed thousands of hectares of grassland around the Shepparton and Gippsland areas.

Several loads have been trucked out of the Yarra Valley with the Gruyere CFA and Wandin Rotary organising further deliveries from landowners in the Gruyere and Upper Yarra areas.

Gruyere CFA captain Matt Sartori organised the pick-up and delivery with his fire-fighters joining Rotary members to load more than 260 squares and 55 rounds of hay onto trucks provided by Wandin Park Equestrian Centre and Yarra Valley Gas. Wandin Rotary member Gavan McIntyre said the farmers of Darraweit Guim in the Romsey area were more than thankful for their efforts.

“Their words couldn’t convey the looks on their faces,” he said.

“When you look at the paddocks and see all that blackened soil and 150 head of cattle, they just devour the hay like kids in a lolly shop,” he said.

EASTERN Health has been recognised for excellence in staff development, service delivery and risk management in the 2014 Leadership in the Public Sector Awards.

Eastern Health runs Healesville, The Angliss, Maroondah and Box Hill hospitals, a well as Yarra Valley Community Health.

Run by the Institute of Public Administration Australia and open to government and community sector organisations delivering government services in Victoria, the awards were presented on Monday, 17 February by secretary of the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet, Andrew Tongue.

Eastern Health took out three of the seven categories.

The People Development Award for work done in building their organisational capacity, which included reducing staff turnover in a workforce of 8300 people by over a third in four years.

For making services more citizen-centric, they won the

Take-away trouble

By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Ranges Council will ask the Minister for Planning to approve a planning scheme amendment to allow a Wesburn take-away business to operate legally.

But the owner of the business says in the meantime, he is thousands of dollars out of pocket.

Nigel Aumann has operated TJ’s General Store as a take-away since early last year, but in June was told the permit to run a retail shop from the building did not cover a takeaway food business.

At Yarra Ranges Council on Tuesday night, 25 February, Cr Jim Child successfully argued that changes were needed to have the rural living zone which covers the whole of Wesburn made less restrictive.

The zone currently has 25 subdefinitions for retail premises, with 15 uses, including take-away food, prohibited.

Mr Aumann told the Mail he went into the business in good faith after being given the go-ahead by the real estate agent involved and the owner of the property to operate as a take-away. “I spent a lot of money getting all the equipment in and renovating the building and the business had been passed by the council’s health department, as well as their street sign department giving us certificates,� he said. “It wasn’t until June that we had compliance officers come up and tell us we were operating illegally and would need to shut down,� he said.

Cr Child said the complex range of retail definitions was where the

mercial activity is concerned. “Our planners are now looking at a process whereby we can rezone those main streets so we get some sort of community and commercial involvement. “It seems ridiculous that we have closed off all opportunities in that main street area of Wesburn.�

A MAN who died after crashing his car on the Woods Point Road was not found until several hours after the crash.

Police said the man died at the scene following the single vehicle collision on Saturday morning.

A passerby came across the collision scene on the Walhalla Road near Leviathen Track later in the day, about 3pm.

Police believe the 45-year-old driver hit a culvert, causing him to lose control and veer off the road into the tree.

They are preparing a report for the Coroner.

POLICE are advising pedestrians to stay off the roads after a Yarra Junction teenager was hit on the Warburton Highway last week.

The 17-year-old was walking from Launching Place to Yarra Junction just after midnight on Sunday, 23 February when he was struck by a four-wheel-drive ute.

LSC Don Trice from Warburton Police said the youth was walking in the middle of the highway, 50 metres west of the Warburton Rail Trail pedestrian crossing near the Home Hotel, when cars approached him from both directions and he was hit by the eastbound ute.

He was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with minor head injuries, a broken femur and a broken hip.

Police are asking all pedestrians to use available footpaths and the Warburton Trail, rather than walking on roads at night.

TWO bike riders were caught doing 65 kilometres over the speed limit as Warburton Police ramped up their patrols of the Reefton Spur to coincide with the Superbikes weekend at Phillip Island.

Two more were over by more than 25km/h.

Under Operation Sputnik police ran extra shifts on 22, 23 and 24 February.

Operation Sputnik is a TAC-funded operation running from December 2013 to April 2014 and targeted to reduce road trauma on the Reefton Spur.

The spur traditionally attracts increased motorbike traffic going to and from the Phillip Island Grand Prix over the Superbikes weekend.

Some 23 motorists were detected speeding over the three days.

The two riders doing 145km/h in the 80 zone were given penalty notices suspending their licences for 12 months, fined $722 and lost eight demerit points.

The other two, doing over 105km/h each had their licences suspended for one month, were fined $469 and four demerit points.

LSC Trice said it was disappointing that after seven years of targeted enforcement on the Reefton Spur some motorbike riders were still riding at such dangerous speeds, putting all other road users at risk.

Emily said, adding that specialists in three states had never seen the particular type of cancer before.

She said her grandfather was a very special man, having served on HMAS Sydney during the Vietnam War.

White Night all right for art I WAS one of the 500,000 plus who ventured into the city to experience Melbourne’s second White Night festival recently.

I had heard many people talk about last year’s event and as it came closer to the time I thought I should venture out and get a good dose of culture.

I was certainly not disappointed and, in fact, at times I was simply amazed.

Instigated by Former Premier Ted Baillieu, White Night provides free access to art and culture.

With so much to see and do it was impossible to get through it all.

I put in a solid three and a half hours between 11pm and 2.30am and at all times was entertained.

This year, the event was expanded from two city blocks to eight city blocks - just as well as

Visual effects in the gardens and along the river were wonderful but the real highlight for me was Flinders Street which was completely transformed and alive with colour.

Flinders Street Station and the Forum were transformed almost beyond recognition by co-

lourful light displays which changed every few minutes.

It was so simple and so effective.

The ‘phantoms of the theatre’ ghost tours at the Arts Centre. which were running every 15 mins until 3am. were booked out and I didn’t get to eperience it!

The success of White Night Melbourne would not have been possible without the strong and robust arts sector, the adventurous audiences, the creative talent and the extraordinary cultural infrastructure that have been nurtured in Victoria over the past four decades.

About 500 artists, nearly all Victorians, helped to make this year’s event a huge success.

To really cap off a weekend of culture the following day I joined the Minister for the Arts, The Hon. Heidi Victoria, for the opening of Solitaire

and Michelle Ussher’s Yellow Eyes Burn and Return exhibition at the Tarrawarra Museum of Art. I made it to bed at 3am after White Night and was most impressed that the Minister had ‘pulled an all-nighter’ the previous night as she “wanted to see everything”.

The arts create more than 110,000 full-time equivalent jobs in Victoria.

Our government helps proliferate those jobs by sponsoring the arts, giving grants in the arts and making sure the industry is nurtured.

I think I really have the arts bug now, also having recently experienced the colour and splendour of wonderful Yea Arts Carnivale.

Maybe this weekend I will try and fit in a different type of art and visit Alowyn Gardens or perhaps the Fragile Couture exhibition at the Memo Hall!

Wonderful lamp has winning Edge

By JODIE SYMONDS A LOCAL girl’s light-bulb moment has won her a ticket to Milan, Italy.

Former Healesville High School student Rebecca Crooke has been accepted to showcase her ‘Paperclip’ desk lamp in April this year.

Miss Crooke will be a part of more than 700 young designers from all over the world showcasing their work to some of the world’s most prestigious manufacturers. The Paperclip won the Best Concept Design Award for 2014 at The Edge Competition in early February.

The competition was held in Sydney early last month at the Royal Hall of Industries in Mall Park.

Miss Crooke’s ‘Paperclip’ desk lamp was inspired by her love for experimenting with aluminium.

The product was aimed at maintaining a functional workspace as well as demonstrating a modern clean use of space.

Initially, Miss Crooke was entered as a student. However, the judges made a decision to enter her in the concept category against professionals.

“My name was called to say I had won concept and it was so overwhelming as well as surprising,” “Some of my lecturers have won in past years, so for me to win was amazing.”

Since the competition, the lamp has brought Miss Crooke

a lot of attention, with some big name furniture companies wanting her product.

“One company gave me their business card and said to tell them when my product is ready for the market,” Miss Crooke said.

To produce the product, Miss Crooke said it took a lot of hard work and effort.

She hopes to enter the Vivid competition in July this year with a new product to display.

Miss Crooke would also like to share her knowledge with Healesville High School’s Year 12s to widen and inspire their career options. The Edge and Vivid competitions are both sponsored by Inside Magazine who hosted the event.

More care is on offer

By JESSE GRAHAM YARRA Glen residents will be able to access an extra helping hand, with Healesville’s HICCI opening outreach service in the town this week.

Healesville Interchurch Community Care Incorporated (HICCI) will be running out of Yarra Glen’s maternal health centre office in the Memorial Hall, with services beginning on 3 March.

HICCI executive officer Kerri Goding said the group was hoping to help those in the Yarra Glen area access their services that include assistance with

transport and pharmacy bills.

“We’re hoping that people who may not have been able to access our services for various reasons - transport or financial - will be able to come and access them in Yarra Glen,” Ms Goding said.

“If anyone knows anyone who might be struggling financially or need assistance with transport, let them know we’re here.”

HICCI’s Yarra Glen service will be open on Mondays from 1pm to 4pm and Thursdays from 9am to noon.

Ms Goding said the opening of a Yarra Glen outreach service

resulted from focus groups on the topic, with the service running as a pilot program, to be assessed in six and 12 months.

“If there is the need ... and the community embraces us being there - we will look at expanding,” she said.

Ms Goding said that HICCI could refer visitors to other services or agencies, if their needs were beyond HICCI’s scope, and that information on the group’s weekly dinner in Healesville would be available.

Get behind pool I WRITE in reply to Ray Donkin’s letter (Pool is a drain, Mail, 25 February) concerning the future of the Jack Hort Memorial Indoor Pool.

He commented, ‘Healesville and surrounds population is increasing, currently more than 10,000 excluding Yarra Glen and 15 per cent of that population are 50 and over, who I believe would make great use of an all-year, all-weather indoor pool’.

They do make great use of an all-year, allweather indoor pool, every day: it’s called the Jack Hort Memorial Pool.

This pool is a vital community asset not being supported by those bodies supposedly responsible for such spheres of community activity and well-being i.e. Yarra Ranges Council, whose preferred response is spin and multiple ‘feasibility studies’. Every community age group is represented in this pool’s users, from toddlers to the most senior.

I’ve been told the Jack Hort Memorial Pool is the last community indoor pool open in surrounding areas affected by the 2009 fires, and also that no-one wants to pull out the ‘fire card’.

Many of the pool users travelling from areas such as Kinglake to Glenburn have suffered and served, via the CFA - and the pool is important to them, too. From this side of the Valley - Yarra Glen, Christmas Hills, Steels Creek - if the Jack Hort Memorial Pool closes, where do we go?

The amount of money required to keep the pool going - in comparison, say, to what the council spends on consultants - is minimal.

Best we forget OF ALL the ‘feelgood’ celebrations and commemorations of late, the planned Coranderrk Walk would probably qualify for a first prize as an attempt to re-write history.

While it is true that Wurundjeri Elders lobbied the government of the day for land, what they got was a state-owned facility with a white administrator who doled our rations while the station made a profit.

This was deemed humane due to the Darwinian notion of the day which held that Aborigines were a race destined for extinction.

The station merely showcased a Christian duty to soften that extinction (and one suspects, to prevent larcency and stealing in order to survive).

The fact that, with only some small exceptions, all land once sought by those trusting Wurundjeri Elders is now firmly subdivided, fenced, farmed or otherwise used by mainly non-indigenous persons begs the question, who is walking for whom?

Give them a hand

By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLE’S controversial red hand has disappeared from the roof of the Coles Express Petrol Station.

The large, inflatable, promotional hand, which was the subject of three letters from disgruntled residents last week,

appeared to have been taken down on Thursday 20 February.

A staff member said the hand was erected once the petrol station opened after a threemonth renovation period, but that a Yarra Ranges Council representative had ordered it to be taken down within 48 hours.

Three residents may rest easier knowing the hand, which was touted as a “monstrosity”, has been dispatched from the area.

The staff member said the giant hand was staying down, and was not to make a reappearance any time soon.

Deaths on the road were also an issue in the area, with eight fatalities in the Yarra Ranges in 2013 - a rise of three compared to 2012.

Insp Rosemblum said road policing would remain a priority throughout 2014.

“We continue with planned visible and covert operations targeting known areas of risk,” he said.

“Media education strategies continue in our efforts to reduce serious injury collisions.”

The state road toll was 42 on Wednesday 26 February - up 38 from the same time in 2013.

The crime rates were compared for the period of 1 January-31 December in 2012 with the same period in 2013.

Youth get help to learn the ropes

By KATH GANNAWAY ANNIVERSARIES are particularly special to Healesville couple Abel and Ann Buissink who celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in February.

They met at an anniversary party. Ann’s family were invited to Abel’s parents’ silver anniversary. The families came out from Holland in the 1950s and moved to Beaconsfield and Berwick respectively, got to know each other and became very good friends.

Abel had come to Healesville to work as a farm manager in 1960 and after their marriage at St Michael’s Catholic Church in Berwick on 1 February, 1964, Healesville became their cherished home.

They raised their three children, Rosemary, Carolyne and Peter and made wonderful and enduring friendships.

“It’s been absolutely wonderful,” said Ann who admits she was a bit lost at first, coming from Berwick where her parents owned a local milk-bar business.

“We knew everyone and everyone knew us, and I came to Healesville not knowing anyone which was quite a change for me,” she said.

The isolation lasted only as long as it took for them to start a family and with infant welfare, kinder, schools and other activities, the same sense of community was quickly established.

The celebration on 16 February brought all their family together, including seven grandchildren, all but one member of the wedding party, and friends.

Abel said in Holland traditionally the first anniversary celebration comes twelve-anda-half years after the marriage,

Josh said he loved being a part of the program as it is really fun and he gets to do activities he would not usually do.

“The program is really good as it gets me outside and really fun,” he said.

“We have been there for each other; supporting each other,” Ann added.

YARRA Ranges Council Youth Services needs mentors to assist young people reach their full potential through positive relationships.

Youth Services is now recruiting volunteer mentors for one-on-one mentoring, driver mentoring and school-based mentoring programs.

Local resident and mentor Aaron Barendregt was partnered with mentee Josh 10 months ago as part of the oneon-one mentoring program.

“It was a requirement for uni to do some sort of community engagement work and I had been thinking of doing some sort of a mentoring thing for a while, so that gave me the kick to get started.

“So I emailed them and got involved and was eventually matched with Josh about 10 months ago.

“It’s been going really well since then.”

Mr Barendregt explained that as part of the mentor program you are matched for one year to hang out and do activities together.

WHILE crime rates are rising across the state, the Yarra Ranges saw total crime drop in the past year, despite rising domestic violence rates.

Victoria Police released its latest round of crime statistics on Wednesday 26 February, comparing 2013 crime rates to the year before.

Crime across Victoria rose 3.1 per cent in 2013, though the Yarra Ranges Police Service Area (PSA) saw a drop of 4.5 per cent overall.

Family violence incidents rose by 6 per cent in 2013, with 380 individual offences recorded compared to 358 in 2012.

Yarra Ranges Inspector Paul Rosemblum vowed that Yarra Ranges police would continue to make family violence a priority in the coming year.

“It is clear that we are progressing in the right direction as there is increased reporting of family violence matters with a noted increase in referrals to support agencies,” he said.

“We will work closely with

council and other agencies to make headway in this area.

“A domestic family violence unit has been implemented and is of great assistance, providing expertise, guidance and confidence in targeting this issue.”

The rise in family violence is consistent with the state’s figures, which saw statistics rise 9 per cent - or 1793 offences from the year before.

Assault in general - which includes family violence - saw an 11.2 per cent rise.

According to Insp Rosemblum, burglary was another key focus for police, with a dramatic fall of 26.6 per cent in residential burglary and a 24.1 per cent increase in commercial and other burglaries.

Insp Rosemblum said Yarra Ranges police had taken “significant effort” in targeting burglary across the field, though the rise in crime rates remained a concern.

“Commercial burglary continues to be an issue, but I am confident that our crime strategies combined with media strat-

LEAVE AND LIVE. Eyes wide open SUMMER may be officially over, but police and emergency services are warning would-be arsonists that crackdowns on firebugs will continue.

CrimeStoppers Victoria CEO Samantha Hunter said that, though summer finished on Friday 28 February, arson remained a large focus for police.

“Arson is an activity of enormous concern to the community, and there is a great willingness to provide information confidentially to CrimeStoppers,” she said.

“Arsonists should be aware that it is not only Victoria Police who is taking a keen interest in their activities, but it is neighbours, friends or colleagues that are acting as our eyes and ears.”

Ms Hunter said that each year since the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, community reporting of suspicious or dangerous fire behavior had increased.

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Tim Cartwright urged the

community to keep a vigilant watch on suspicious fire activity as the colder months approached.

Penalties for arson can include up to 25 years in jail, while being found guilty of recklessly lighting a fire can result in fines of up to $34,000 and 15 years in jail.

Ms Hunter said it was also important for communities not to forget about their fire plans as winter drew closer, and to have a plan ready and up-to-date.

“If you live where suburbs interface with grasslands, state forests or bushlands we encourage you to not only be on the lookout for suspicious activity, but to have a fire plan,” she said.

Suspicious or dangerous fire activity can be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Residents should contact triple zero in the event of an emergency.

Touching farewell to Chloe

By KATH GANNAWAY CHLOE Blackney’s family were beside her every step of the way as she was farewelled last week with beautiful tributes, tears and courage.

She would have been proud of them all.

Among the more than 800 hundred people at the Heritage Pioneer Chapel at Woori Yallock on Wednesday, 26 February, were students, teachers and parents from Launching Place Primary School where Chloe was in her final year and many friends and family from the Yarra Glen community.

Chloe, 11, was killed, along with family friend Gary Theobold, when a truck crashed into the car he was driving on Saturday, 15 February, at Steels Creek. Chloe was a back seat passenger. Her

best friend Hayley Theobald and Hayley’s brother Lachlan were also in the car, on their way to Funfields in Whittlesea to celebrate Hayley’s 12th birthday.

Celebrant Andrew Henley spoke of the special relationships Chloe shared with her brothers Rhys and Brock and sister Holly, with her 15 cousins, uncles and aunties, and her adoring grandparents.

He spoke of a little girl who might one day have been a teacher, who loved being in the school aerobics team and family holidays, and who was fearless when it came to going on the biggest and scariest rides at the theme parks.

Simon and Kylie spoke bravely of their cute little girl who loved ice-cream and chocolate, loved pushing everything to the limit, had a

finely-tuned sense of humour, and who was developing into a beautiful young lady “She loved that she belonged to our family,” Kylie said.

Simon spoke of how she valued her friends and read a message from Hayley that listed the things she would miss - her contagious smile, funny sense of humour, the way she talked so fast and her smelly farts.

“We started kinder together and stuck together like chewing gum on a shoe,” she said.

She shared her most heartfelt grief.

“I wish this was a terrible nightmare and I would wake up and we would nearly be at Funfields,” she said. To which everyone in their hearts echoed “Amen”.

Leadership from China EIGHT Mater Christi students will be jetting off to China later this month for a six-week stay, as part of a $13 million government program.

Year 9 students Jocelyn Bennett, Simone McPeake, Rebecca Langford, Gemma Sammut, Tian Gibson, Eleanor Patten, Ciara Flanagan and Brianna Pettenuzzo will be sent off to China on 18 March as part of the Victorian Young Leaders to China Program.

The eight Belgrave students, along with 62 others from government and Catholic schools around the state, will stay in the area for six weeks, exploring key cultural sites and learning the local language.

The young leaders will spend a week undertaking intensive Mandarin language training, before spending a week visiting key sites in the country and four weeks in classes at leading schools.

Education Minister Martin Dixon announced on Sunday 2 March that the students would be accompanied by nine educators, who would participate in a special professional development program.

Once they have returned to Australia, the educators will bring back what they have learned overseas to help improve Victorian schools and their learning standards.

Mr Dixon said the six-week journey

would help to forge the links between Australian and Chinese cultures in education. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The benefits of this program will extend far beyond the students and educators taking part - it will be a catalyst for promoting Chinese language and culture in schools across the state,â&#x20AC;? he said.

He said the government had an aim of making sure all students from Prep through to Year 10 were studying a language by 2025 - with Preps beginning in 2015.

The young leaders will be returning from the trip on 27 April.

Ferntree Gully student Erin McKernan and Sarah Alley from Belgrave were two of the 17 students who achieved ATAR scores over 90.

MOUNT Lilydale Mercy College Intermediate VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) students were recently involved in the annual VCAL Amazing Race Day which is held within the Melbourne CBD. The event is part of a unit on leadership, in which students explore the characteristics of people in leadership roles.

They distinguish between different leadership styles, and identify methods for motivating others.

To reflect on their own leadership styles, they are encouraged to identify interpersonal skills that are used by people in leadership roles and identify responsibilities of a leader.

The Amazing Race gives students the opportunity to put into practice what they have learned about leadership and working in teams.

Students worked in groups of four to five following clues which led them between checkpoints in the CBD. At various checkpoints students had to answer questions and complete physical challenges in order to progress. This year the results were outstanding.

Most groups achieved above average times, which demonstrates their effectiveness as leaders and team members.

During 2013 Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pope and became Pope Francis and since that time he has gone about changing and growing the Catholic Church from within. Like most who lead he does this not by only word, but by the example that he gives us and clearly his is a different style of leadership. Firstly he chose to live in community rather than the isolation of the beautiful papal chambers and he prefers simple clothes rather than the rich robes of his predecessors. He has been seen driving around Rome in a simple car rather than a limousine and he rejects much of the trappings of his office. Pope Francis is interested in relationships and his model for change involves prayer, discernment and consultation by listening in earnest to those involved, but especially to the poor.

Pope Francis has gone about remodelling for us the style of leadership that we in Catholic Education have known for some time. We call it “servant leadership” and it is obviously based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Servant leadership asks a great deal from us because it calls us to be all that we can be. It compels us to develop our talents and gifts. It helps us to understand that each of us has been blessed and thus we in turn must grow those gifts and share them with others. Each of us is and must be God’s gift to the world. Service demands that we give of ourselves and of our best to others and here once again Pope Francis has given us the theme for Catholic Education week in 2014.

The theme of “Entrust Yourselves to God and Dare to Dream” originated in a tweet by Pope Francis to young people in April 2013 and Joe Doolan from the Catholic Education Office in Melbourne tells us that “Pope Francis encourages all young people to embrace the grand plan that God has for each person, a vision that includes personal integrity, strong relationships with others, service of the Kingdom and a shared vigilance for our world”.

Thus each one of us is being called to be a better person and to better ourselves. God wants us to dare to dream and then to bring that dream to reality. Pope Francis has modelled the way to give birth to those dreams. Seek advice and trust in those who support you; don’t be deterred by criticism; plan and seek clarity (from God by prayer) and then have the courage to …

Dental clinic is wide open INSPIROâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S mobile dental clinic is now open in Healesville and Yarra Junction.

Parents with a health care card or pensioner concession card that have children aged up to 18 years of age are able to access Inspiroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s public dental services for free.

In addition, pregnant women (who are concession card holders) and their children are prioritised, so that means they can skip the waiting list and get the first available appointment.

In fact, all children (with or without a concession card) up to 12 years old can skip the wait list.

Non-concession card holders can

also skip the wait list by using the private dental services.

Primary school children are only charged $31 for a full course of treatment and those with Child Dental Benefits Schedule entitlements and private health insurance are also welcomed.

GARDENING is a healthy activity from which anyone of any age can benefit.

It provides relaxation, fresh food, enjoyment, social contact and exercise, and flowers.

In an increasing number of towns throughout Yarra Ranges, residents donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even have to have their own garden to reap the benefits.

Community gardens are growing up everywhere and while they all have a different look, space or aim, the one thing they have in common is bringing people together for a healthy activity.

The Warburton Community Garden was started about a year ago under the wing of Warburton Advancement League by a group of people who were interested in having edible food growing right in town.

There are garden boxes along the river walk behind the Bendigo Bank and behind the Upper Yarra Arts Centre as well as in the primary garden next to Warburton Wellbeing in the main street.

The garden is growing well, but organiser Kirsty Chalmers says orgnisers need more hands to really have the gardens growing to capacity and looking good. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If there is anyone interested in community gardening, in whatever form, we would love them to come along and join in,â&#x20AC;? she said.

While there are enough people to keep the gardens watered over summer even in that basic, and enjoyable, task, a bit of help would be welcome.

Recognising that people are busy and not always able to attend working bees, Kirsty said organisers would soon be putting up a notice board that identifies what needs to be done in the garden so people can be more flexible with their involvement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We really feel there may be people in the community who would enjoy gardening, either with friends, or with other members of the garden group but who may not realise the community garden is here,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Vacation to vocation

By KATH GANNAWAY A LIFETIME ambition for one woman, and holiday encounters for two others, have seen three Upper Yarra women make a difference in remote and impoverished villages on Australia’s doorstep.

They are interesting and inspiring women who will share their stories when the Upper Yarra Women of Interest series presents its International Women’s Day Lunch at Warburton on Friday 7 March.

Jean Thomas, 42, grew up in Don Valley and since childhood has had a passion for conservation work.

She worked at Melbourne Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary but has spent the past decade in Papua New Guinea where she and husband Jim have worked with the Tenkile Conservation Alliance to conserve endangered tree kangaroos in the remote West Sepik area.

The outcomes have been much broader with her approach of combining conservation and sustainable living programs with her work with women and children on health issues resulting in an increasing animal population, a decrease in childhood diseases and improved sanitation and water supplies.

As a team Jean and Jim have been recognised with many awards including the Australian Geographic Conservationist of the Year Award last year.

For the past five years they have been fund-raising and acting as a conduit for funds for the orphanage.

“The school has grown from 100 students to over 500 because this sponsorship program is in place and the school buildings have improved over that time,” Kerry said.

The audience will have the opportunity to delve further into these women of interest at the lunch which runs from noon to 3pm at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre.

Quilts to snuggle up for the sick kids

By JESSE GRAHAM QUILTERS are assembling for their annual show this month in Coldstream, aiming to display their work, raise money and deliver quilts to sick children.

The Patchwork Collection Friendship Group’s annual quilt show will be held from Saturday 15 to Sunday 16 March at Wallace’s Garden at 7 Maddens Lane, Coldstream.

The show, which has been held since 2009, aims to raise money for dedicated quilters to make quilts for patients at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Event organiser Bev Busiko said the group behind the show had formed in 2007 to make quilts for very sick children through the Victorian Quilters Snuggly Quilts project.

She said that she hoped the community would come out to support

the cause.

“There are lovely quilts on display and some for sale,” she said.

“You can come and look at the quality of the donators’ quilts.”

The friendship group had come together through classes at a Healesville patchwork shop and, after the 2009 bushfires, co-ordinated donations of about 6000 quilts to fireaffected communities.

Other attractions at the quilt

show include a cash-only trading table offering discounted fabrics, a raffle, special quilts on display and Devonshire teas made with local jams.

Admission to the quilt show is $5, with doors open from 10am4pm at the Coldstream gardens.

School’s story is on the board

By KATH GANNAWAY HISTORY boards telling the story behind the then and now of Badger Creek State School No 3309 will be launched on Friday 7 March at the Badger Creek Old School building.

The idea to have a permanent display that tells the history of the school since it opened in 1899 and the original school building that has served for the past 20 years as a community hall came from a reunion in 2011 of students from the 1940s and 1950s.

With wonderful memories of school days spent in the old school building revived, an enthusiastic group of the former students funded the project.

Grade five and six students from Badger Creek Primary School worked on the history of the school up until its relocation to make way for the new school in 1989.

Members of the Badger Creek Old School Building Committee of Management and friends provided the information for the second board that tells the story of the move and its on-going use as a Yarra Ranges Council-owned community facility.

Committee of Management chairman Arthur Harford said it was a project that will add to the community’s appreciation of the history of education and the school building itself and promote opportunities for its future use.

Kevin Mason, a committee member, member of the 1940s/50s reunion group and president of the Healesville Historical Society, said the boards would be a tremendous community asset.

“A lot of visitors from overseas and interstate (visiting Healesville Sanctuary) come over to see the building and wonder what it is,” he said.

“These boards will give a solid background of the history for visitors, and for many locals who don’t know a lot about the history of the school itself.

ONE thing should be made clear before watching Inside Llewyn Davis - it isn’t an uplifting film.

The latest film by the famous Cohen brothers focuses on Llewyn (Oscar Isaac), an often downtrodden folk musician, trying to find success in New York’s Greenwhich Village in the 1960s.

Inside Llewyn Davis follows Llewyn’s uprooted life, which sees him playing in bars, sleeping on a different couch every night and trying to scrape together a musical career.

However, the odds are often

not on Llewyn’s side and his bitter demeanour leaves him struggling hard as winter sets in and times get tough.

There are many funny moments in the film that bring the piece out of the darkness - particularly when John Goodman’s character enters the fray - but most of time, the bleakness of Llewyn’s situation will be at the forefront.

The scenery and a strong un-

derpinning soundtrack help to carry the film and solidify it as a fantastic piece.

Inside Llewyn Davis is hardly a feel-good film, but it’s entirely worth watching, and beautifully carried out from start to finish.

Bob Dylan fans are also in for a surprise, so keep an eye (or an ear) out.

Trials and tribulations

By KATH GANNAWAY SEVILLE Pony Club hosted its annual horse trials on Sunday 23 February putting more than 270 competitors through their paces.

The riders, from six years old through to mature adults, competed in dressage, show jumping and cross country at the international level Wandin Park Equestrian Centre.

Competitors came from across the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges and from as far away as Wonthaggi and the Mornington Peninsula to compete in the competition which is a qualifier for the state horse trials in May. Riders wore black arm bands as a stand against domestic violence as part of a state-wide mark of respect in sporting circles following the killing of young cricketer Luke Batty during his club’s practice session.

“The Victorian community as

a whole is devastated by the tragic events at Tyabb Cricket Club which resulted in the loss of 11-year-old Luke Batty,” Seville Pony Club president Di Harvey said in her welcome to eventers.

“The black arm bands will not only signify support for those directly affected by the dreadful incident in Tyabb but will also show our recognition and support of efforts to address domestic violence and related mental health problems in the community.”

Organisers said the day was a great success and thanked the many volunteers who helped out on the day, their sponsors and John and Angela Anker of Wandin Park for their roles in making the day run smoothly.

“Without support from these people and businesses, this type of event could not happen,” committee member Lisa Tyrrell said.

Seville secures finals berth THE DJ Strachan Shield competition has come down to the final round of the season with six teams battling for three finals positions.

Reigning premiers Seville is the only team to secure a finals position.

Yarra Junction has all but secured its place in the top four after battling its way back from the depths of despair earlier in the season.

Woori Yallock and WarburtonMillgrove have come from the clouds in recent rounds to put their hands up.

However, early season front runners Healesville, Coldstream and Mount Evelyn have a battle on their hands to even feature in the end-of-season festivities after demoralising losses.

Woori Yallock have boosted their finals chances, while dealing a massive blow to Healesville’s chances with an impressive victory at Queen’s Park.

After posting a challenging score of 181, the Tigers had little trouble defending what most thought would be an achievable target.

Dynamic Duo Jackson Wright (3/33) and Simon Young (2/24) made crucial early inroads to which the home side never recovered.

Stephen Morgan (3/13) once again capitalised on the work of his paceman and polished off an impressive victory keeping the Tigers well in the hunt of a finals position - that two rounds ago looked highly unlikely.

Irishman Brian Scanlon (26) and young star Liam Daly (24) did their best to keep the Bloods in the contest.

However, with only 129 on the board when the 10th wicket fell, things were fairly comfortable for the visitors.

Healesville now finds itself with the

biggest challenge to remain in the finals race as they face an inform Seville side who look ominous on the eve of finals.

Woori Yallock probably finds itself in the match of the round against Yarra Junction in a game that promises plenty in a battle between two of the best young teams going around with finals the luring carrot.

Warburton-Millgrove also finds itself the biggest winner of Round 13 having beaten Coldstream in a cliffhanger.

On day one of the contest, Coldstream posted 181 on their home turf, which is a challenging score at best when the boundaries are so far away.

The talented Jason Coghlan (37) and captain Troy Murphy (36) provided the early challenge to the Crocs speedsters as they weathered an early onslaught from tear away Matthew Stark (4/38).

A brilliant battle between bat and ball ensued as both sides had patches in the game where they thought they would come out on top.

As has been the case on so many occasions over the past decade or so, there is no better man to see his side over the line than the brilliant Mick Walker (37n.o.).

Walker’s experience and patience led his young tail to victory with one wicket to spare.

With scores tied at the fall of the ninth wicket, the game was poised on a knife’s edge, but nothing was going to deny the Burras of a much-deserved victory and their place in the last dash towards finals action.

One would be brave to discount

Coldstream a place in the top four with a final round match up against cellar dwellers Hoddles Creek - however a Wombats victory would not be the first time they have surprised the Crocs this season.

Warburton-Millgrove has its destiny in its own hands as it hosts a stumbling Mount Evelyn in a contest it should be confident of winning.

Seville made short work of Mount Evelyn as it defended 318 with relative comfort.

The task was always going to be a monumental one for the Rovers, however if they could find the resolve to bat out their overs, then anything could have happened.

A gritty maiden century from opener Dan Fraser had the Rovers on a similar path to the Blues innings.

Regular wickets at the other end at the hands of some disciplined bowling always had the visitors well in front of the contest.

With only one other batsman contributing double figures to the cause, the home side was bundled out for 155.

Ishara Amarsinghe led the attack with a disciplined effort across the innings.

Andy Kay completed a memorable game turning the screws on a floundering Mount Evelyn tail.

Seville now faces Healesville in an ideal tune up for finals against a Bloods outfit that will be desperate to keep their season alive.

Mount Evelyn has to dramatically change its recent run of outs in the face of a flying Warburton-Millgrove outfit on its home turf - then hope a host of results go its way if it is to advance be-

yond this Saturday.

In the final game of the round, Yarra Junction all but secured its much-deserved finals birth, as it did what it had to against a stubborn Hoddles Creek.

Chasing a challenging 211 for victory, the Wombats made a dogged start as they got themselves into the contest giving them a chance of chasing the score at 3/63 in the shadows of the tea adjournment.

Unfortunately for the Wombats, the challenge became too great in the face of some disciplined bowling from the Eagles.

Quinton Hodgkinson (4/32) has announced himself as a genuine match winner this season with both bat and ball. With the support of his captain Daniel Lever (4/58) whose marathon 30 overs gave the visitors no breaks in pressure, bowled Hoddles Creek out for 148.

Yarra Junction now has their destiny in their own hands as they face a challenging match against Woori Yallock.

A win would shore up a home final, with only a massive defeat opening a remote chance of missing the action altogether.

Hoddles Creek only has pride to play for however a second defeat of Coldstream will give them something to hang their hats on after a trying season spent at the foot of the table.

Shoot celebrates Woods Club pioneer

By John Wood A BEAUTIFUL February day provided fitting conditions to hold the Jack Scott Memorial shoot where the Woods Point Gun Club and the Scott family celebrated the memory of Jack, one of the founding members of the club.

It was also the day for the first of the two Woods Point/Mansfield Team shoots for the year.

The Eye Opener saw Phillip Desmond and Trevor Ewert off to a good start, with perfect 30/30 scores and a handy cash prize each.

The Main event was the 50 target Double Barrel Jack Scott Memorial Trophy, sponsored by the Scott Family, that saw no perfect 50/50.

Tom Apps, Phillip Desmond and B Jones scored 49/50 to enter the shoot off for the trophy. Surprisingly, after

only two rounds, Apps and Jones both missing their second target leaving Desmond to claim the trophy, 51/52.

The only other shoot off was for 2nd in B Grade and that lasted only three targets with Richard Brown beating Daryl Ewert 49/53 to 48/53.

The Grade winners were: AA 1st Desmond 51/52, 2nd Jones 50/52. A Grade saw a win for Apps 49/50 with Ian Findlay 2nd, 48/50.

B Grade was won outright by the Hoon, 48/50 with Brown 2nd, 49/53, after his shoot off. Garry Ewert managed a C Grade win, 45/50, Daniel Poile 2nd 45/50.

The winner of the Jack Scott Junior Trophy was Jake Murray with an excellent 45/50.

The 20 target Jack Scott Handicap Championship, sponsored by Don, Ann, Eddy and Roz Woods was next with a surprising result. President,

John Wood actually shot 20/20 to his complete amazement with Richard Brown in the same squad following suit. All the favoured competitors were so shocked that they forgot to hit all of their owns targets, leaving John and Richard to shoot off for the sash. After eight targets John had his first sash for 2014, 28/28, Richard 2nd, 27/28.

Daryl Ewert’s 19/20 gained him the 3rd place prize while Garry Ewert beat R Brill and Peter West to take 4th, 20/22.

Junior, Jake Murray’s 17/20 was a good effort for his first shoot at Woods Point’s difficult targets.
