Geelong ready to rock Mayor Darryn Lyons and music legend Daryl Briathwaite are ready for Motor City Music Festival to rock Geelong Showgrounds.

MOTOR City Music Festival is set to rock Geelong over the March long weekend.

Hugo T Armstrong and his Motor City team have arranged a non-stop blues and rock extravaganza at Geelong’s first music festival.

Geelong Showgrounds will be transformed into a festival zone full of music, food, a beer hall, a mojito bar, carnival rides, market stalls and a bucket-load of fun.

More than 55 acts will play on five stages all weekend, comprising one-open air stage and four under cover.

Regardless of the weather and musical tastes, Motor City Musical Festival has everyone covered.

Friday night is all about roots and rock, with Chocolate Starfish and Nick Barker part of a line-up.

Saturday features blues performers and tribute bands playing the classics of ACDC, Kiss, Guns’n’Roses, The Doors, Queen and Led Zeppelin on the open-air stage.

Sunday is a day for the whole family, featuring great Aussie favourites such as Daryl Braithwaite, The Chantoozies and Boom Crash Opera as well as kids’ entertainment.

Sunday culminates in a massive fireworks finale to end the party with a bang.

Daryl Braithwaite visited the showgrounds festival site this week with Mayor Darryn Lyons.

“I am really looking forward to playing at the Motor City Music Festival,” Braithwaite says.

SUPPORTING Geelong and fostering local talent is a core commitment of the Motor City Music Festival team.

To achieve these aims, the festival will dedicate a whole stage to showcasing young local acts.

Over the three days of Motor City Music Festival, 16 bands or artists will play on the Live & Local stage in the Education Pavilion.

On Friday night the bill features 2011 Melbourne Youth in Blues award-winner Alister Turrill, the soulful vocals of Tex Miller, a high-energy set from Brooklyn Blue and exceptional voice and heartfelt soul of Wayne Jury.

The Saturday and Sunday Live & Local programs were cocurated by Tex Miller and Wayne Jury, a local musical mentor and creator of the Blues Boot Camp workshops.

“The best way to ensure we have a vibrant live music scene in the future is to give young artists a go today,” Wayne says.

Saturday’s Live & Local program kicks off at 12.30pm with sets from John Willard, Jarrod Shaw and Lauren Barnard.

At 3pm Music Victoria will run a panel discussion for up-andcoming musicians about career development.

After the panel, live and local music will ramp up again with Jack Wright, Bound by Hound, The Mud Peas and The Kite Machine, who have just been snapped up by a major agent.

“Anything that helps real local musicians make their noise at real people with music-loving ears gets a tick in our books,” says The Kite Machine’s Levi Anderson, whose band played almost 50 gigs in 2013.

On Sunday, 17-year-old musician Jamie Pye will open the youth programming at 4pm.

“I’m really stoked to be part of the Motor City Music Festival this year,” Jamie says.

“It’s a privilege to be performing on the Live & Local stage.

We’re going to show everyone that Geelong produces some very talented people.”

Jamie will be followed by sets from The Larson Effect, Oscar Laylor Band, The Tiny Giants and The Stackshots, concluding just before the big festival fireworks finale at 8.45pm.

The festival program is on pages six and seven with a full list of Live & Local artists and times.

Children’s entertainment will run in the Education Pavilion from 10am to 4pm.

Blues Train legends celebrate at festival

THE BLUES Train is celebrating its 20th birthday by putting on more than 20 of its favourite acts at Motor City Music Festival.

Blues Train favourites, along with the greatest Australian rock, roots and tribute acts, will be showcased on four covered and one open-air stage on the picnic lawns and selected pavilions of Geelong Showgrounds.

Blues Train favourites at the festival will include Jimi Hocking, Lloyd Spiegel, Andrea Marr Band, Geoff Achison, Sweet Felicia and the Hon-

eytones, Blue Eyes Cry, Blues Mountain, Claude Hay, George Kamikawa and Chris Russell’s Chicken Walk.

A Saturday highlight will be the coming together of three legends when Geoff Achison and Lloyd Spiegel join Jimi Hockings’s Blues Machine.

Chris Wilson and his renowned Crown of Thorns band will play on the Friday night.

The Blues Train was born back in 1994. Inspired by stories of the old blues masters jamming on Mississippi freight trains, Point Lonsdale’s Hugo

T Armstrong, a DJ and radio presenter, teamed up with a local caterer and Bellarine Railway to create a magic experience of music, food and wine aboard an historic steam train.

In the early days The Blues Train hosted only a handful of shows a year.

Now 20 years later it operates 44 weekends a year.

To date, more than 65,000 patrons have rocked The Blues Train, an enduring and hugely successful partnership between regional tourism and small business.

At Motor City Music Festival, Hugo and his team will create a fantastic festival vibe to give patrons an experience they’ll talk about for weeks and look forward to repeating every year. Motor City Music Festival is also a celebration of Hugo’s new company, Bay City Events.

REVIEWS FRIDAY night at Motor City Music Festival is all about roots and rock, with a focus on big riffs and having a blast with hundreds of new best friends.

Gates open at 5.30pm when all the bars, food vans and carnival rides will be ready for action.

The first band will start at 6pm and the last act will finish at 12.30am.

The Southern Cross stage will boast a great rock line-up culminating in one of Australia’s biggest live bands of the ’90s, Chocolate Starfish, whose gigs have been described as a “crazed aerobic session”.

The rock action kicks off at the Southern Cross stage with Raw Britt playing ’70s Brit-rock

hits from Led Zeppelin, Cream, Status Quo and more.

Then comes the thundering riffs and mighty grooves of Melbourne six-piece Palace of the King, followed by popular pub rocker Nick Barker and the Heartache State.

In the lead-up to the headline act, Geelong’s Diehard Dolls will deliver a raw, sweaty, powerhouse set.

On The Blues Train stage, Chris Wilson’s Crown of Thorns, Jimi Hocking’s Blues Machine and George Kamikawa with Noriko Tadano, from Australia’s Got Talent, will kick off the weekend celebration of 20 years of the legendary Blues Train.

The Live & Local stage will

features local blues and roots talent, with Tex Miller, Alister Turrill, Brooklyn Blue and Wayne Jury each playing two sets.

Two more stages of rock and roots will feature at the Motor Pavilion Beer Hall and the Showman’s Bar. Friday night is over-18s only.

The whole festival zone is licensed and has three great bars - the Southern Cross Bar, the Motor Pavilion Beer Hall and the deep-south-juke-joint atmosphere of the Showman’s Bar. The program grid and festival site were designed for easy of movement, giving patrons a chance to hear a few songs from all 17 acts or to catch the full sets of their favourites.

The Barwon Regional Waste Management Group (BRWMG) with support from the ALCOA Foundation is increasing recycling opportunities for visitors to public places in our region, including City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire, Borough of Queensclife and Colac Otway Shire.

Check out the new signed waste and recycling bins at Ocean Grove which feature beautiful artwork from Ocean Grove Primary School students with messages to inspire the community to recycle.

Tributes flow for Saturday SOUTHERN Cross Stage will host 12 hours of blues and rock tributes on the Saturday of Motor City Music Festival.

The first act is Pearl – The Janis Joplin Show. The lead singer is so good at channelling the legendary singer that Janis Joplin’s original guitarist has asked her to tour with him this year.

Joplin fans will hear all her hits, such as Me and Bobby McGee, Cry Baby, Piece of My Heart, Mercedes Benz, Move Over.

The Doors Show – Absolutely Live will continue the ’60s vibe.

The audience will marvel at the lead singer’s uncanny similarity to Jim Morrison in stage presence, vocal tone and mannerisms as they sing along to all The Doors’ biggest hits.

The Australian Queen Tribute Show will move the day into the ’70s, with Gareth Hill channelling Freddie Mercury’s mindblowing vocal range, stage antics and physical likeness. The rest of the band’s determination to stay true to everything about Queen further enhances the show.

Continuing the apparent time

warp, Shed Zeppelin will take to the stage later in the day, with Andrew Simpson as Led Zeppelin’s enigmatic lead singer, Robert Plant.

The progression reaches into the ’90s late in the say with Appetite for Destruction, the Guns’n’Roses Show.

Anyone needing a breather form the non-stop rock can obtain a pass-out to be back onsite by 9.30pm.

The other four stages will host a variety of fantastic blues and roots acts throughout the day.

Rock out with leading tribute bands like Kisstroyer on the Saturday of Motor City Music Festival.

Designated drivers should head down Breakwater Rd where they will see the gate -four entrance for the car park on the left just before Geelong Racecourse. Parking here is free all weekend.

McHarry’s Bus Lines operate Routes 61 hourly and 62 half-hourly, with both stopping at the showgrounds.

Train travellers can walk from South Geelong Station north along Tucker St and Breakwater Rd, which takes about 10 minutes.

Trains run frequently on Friday night and around every

hour on Saturday. Train services are limited on Sundays when catching a bus is easier.

Bellarine Rail Trail runs right past the northern edge of the showgrounds, giving the option of riding bicycles to the festival?

International media reports also reveal that Swiss-based Vitol sold Iranian oil to China and claim it dealt with Libyan rebels.

Vitol, the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest independent energy trader, has bought Shellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Australian assets in a $2.9 billion deal set to save the Corio refineryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 600 jobs.

Vitol has been involved in highprofile controversies since 2001 when it reportedly paid one million pounds to Serbian war criminal Arkan to fix a soured oil deal with the regime of Slobodan Milosevic. Vitol denied undertaking any illegal conduct in the transaction.

Other reports criticised Vitol for paying surcharges to Iraqâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s national oil company during Saddam Husseinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regime, undermining an UN oil-forfood program in Iraq.

In 2012 Vitol reportedly admitted buying and selling Iranian oil in a deal with China, although its Swiss status purportedly allowed the company to avoid breaches of sanctions against Iran.

AN INVITATION to the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest sports festival has further boosted the meteoric rise of Highton bodybuilder Calum Von Moger.

Calum left this week for Columbus, Ohio, his second trip to the US this year, to attend Arnold Sports Festival, founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The organisers have asked Calum to present an award in the bodybuilding section of the festival, which includes 50 sports, events and a major fitness expo.

While packing this week Calum said he was excited about suddenly being in-demand in the Mecca of bodybuilding, America. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good as long as I can manage it well - itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit of a balancing act and it takes a little getting used to,â&#x20AC;? the 23-year-old admitted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My last trip to the states went really well and I made a lot of connections and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s given me the opportunity to go back again.â&#x20AC;?

Calum is preparing a visa application to live and work for the next three years in the US where he will compete in bodybuilding shows, undertake photo shoots and seek acting work. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My aim is that by the end of the year I have on-going work lined up because breaking into the American market is not easy,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All you can do is be prepared as best you can so youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ready to handle any situation when it comes up.â&#x20AC;?

Calum is also training for a Mr Universe competition in South Korea in June.

His fifth placing in last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mr Universe in Austria as a relative newcomer made the bodybuilding world sit up and take notice.

He has already been signed by two major sports and leisure agencies and has lined up photo and video shoots with bodybuilding.com.

OBJECTORS to a proposed transfer of an Ocean Grove community park to Geelong’s council have lodged a request for a special general meeting to block the move.

A member of Ocean Grove Park Association, Christine Brooks, has written to association president Colin Atkins requesting a postponement of any decision on the transfer until the meeting is convened.

Thirty-five association members, more than 10 per cent of the membership, supported the request, triggering the special general meeting condition.

A community petition has also been circulating Ocean Grove calling on the decision to be postponed.

The Independent reported two weeks ago that a proposed $1 million performance space for the park had sparked the ownership issue.

City Hall has set a funding condition that ownership of the park transfers from Trust for Nature to council.

Proponents argue that a covenant would be sufficient to protect the park.

Ms Brooks said Mr Atkins had ignored association members’ requests for a vote on the issue.

“We’re not satisfied by any

of the statements made by the park president in relation to the proposed covenant.

“There’s no need for a covenant. The park was saved when it was put into Trust for Nature ownership.

“This was considered the safest option for the future of the park in 2000 and it’s the safest option today,” she said.

“I haven’t seen a copy of the draft covenant but, whatever the conditions, there could be some loopholes.”

Ms Brooks said covenants could be released or varied by agreement between the parties.

By NOEL MURPHY BELEAGUERED Geelong Animal Welfare Society is clawing its way back from financial strife after falling from a surplus of almost $1 million to a reported $400,000 deficit.

Chief executive officer Belinda Russo told the Independent corporate and community pledges were pulling the Moolap shelter back from the brink after a torrid two years in which two management boards were overturned.

Essential infrastructure spending for the shelter to meet its legal obli-

gations, along with new services, had exhausted reserves but new pledges of financial, staffing and other assistance could return the shelter to the black within three years, Ms Russo said.

The past two years of difficulty for the region’s largest anmial shelter followed the rise to power of a no-kill lobby after a bitter campaign against the previous administration.

The lobby sacked or pushed out almost all the previous board as 30 members and staff left the society and its Moolap shelter.

But the replacement board faced

complaints of wrongly killing family pets, giving away desexed and immunised animals free of charge and dumping an after-hours ambulance service.

Ms Russo said the no-kill board, which lacked governance skills, had been replaced.

The society had since adopted a renewal strategy to bring the shelter up to scratch, she said.

“There’s a lot of ground to make up but we’re quite positive about it. We need to stay transparent the whole way through.

“This is a community shelter that

belongs to the Geelong region. It’s very important everyone knows what’s going on.”

Ms Russo said activists within the no-kill lobby had abused, threatened and thrown stones at her.

An unexpected increase in unwanted animals due to personal financial difficulties and landlord demands had exacerbated the shelter’s problems, she said.

SURF Coast Air Action is gearing up to fight any sale of Aloca’s Anglesea coal mine and power station.

“Any potential buyer needs to know they’re buying a very old and very polluting power station,” the group’s Dr Jacinta Morahan told the Independent.

“It’s one-tenth the size of Hazelwood but produces three times the sulphur dioxide – a known respiratory

irritant – as well as large quantities of particulate the World Health Organisation has classified as carcinogenic.”

Dr Morahan said any buyer faced a likely upgrading of emissions regulations and could face a bill of up to $70 million to provide pollution technology necessary to meet new standards.

An independent planning panel has recommended a raft of changes to councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plans for the 92-hectare centre, bounded by Surf Coast Hwy and Boundary, Barwarre and Burvilles Rds. A report said the panel â&#x20AC;&#x153;shared the concernsâ&#x20AC;? of the big retailers on capping the amount of the town centreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retail floor space and on design guidelines that were â&#x20AC;&#x153;onerous and too prescriptiveâ&#x20AC;?.

The Independent revealed in November that the parties had assembled an array of planning, retail and engineering experts to argue over space caps, design guidelines and the level of developer contributions.

The panel report said new opportunities to plan for the town centre would be achieved â&#x20AC;&#x153;principally through two key tenants who will seek to gain a competitive advantage over the otherâ&#x20AC;?. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With the recent introduction of the commercial zones, the way in which council has effectively prohibited uses that are as of-right in the zone sends an incorrect message about what the zones have been introduced to achieve. A fine result as dobbers target littering

Staff slam uni parking

By NOEL MURPHY PARKING strife at Deakin University is under staff attack as the new year’s courses begin.

Staff have slammed $450 annual fees that fail to guarantee parking spaces as well as inadequate shuttle bus seats between the Waurn Ponds campus and Geelong.

National Tertiary Education Union organiser Gary Ryan said university’s executives were ignoring a campaign for more parking as construction projects stole existing spaces.

“We’ve pointed out all the problems and they’ve said it’s too expen-

“We’ll take it up to them again but we just don’t see any attitude change by senior executives who all have reserved parks.”

Mr Ryan said staff were arriving up to an hour early to secure a space.

“I’ve also heard that when new students find out how much it costs to park they study online and don’t come to campus because it’s too expensive.”

Staff told the Independent that work had begun on a new engineering department in Waurn Ponds campus’s main car park.

“The shuttle buses don’t have enough seats when you need them, car pooling is difficult and riding your bike up that Barrabool Road hill is harder.”

Deakin acknowledged problems at peak periods but said predicting daily demand accurately was “not possible”.

Deakin was spending millions of dollars tackling the problems, said

sustainable enterprise manager Karly Lovell.

“A permit cannot guarantee a bay will be available. However, there’s a marked drop in demand for parking once students settle in to the new year,” she said.

Ms Lovell said Deakin had invested $2.3 million on providing parking alternatives, including inter-campus and park-and-ride bus services.

Deakin had also introduced a 64-passenger “Cube Bus” to replace one of its 24-seat inter-campus buses and recently opened a “Transit Hub” at Waurn Ponds to cater for bus, bike and “active transport users”.

Mental program ambassador Vardy positive, says Costa

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IF ANYONE has a reason to be depressed, it’s Geelong AFL footballer Nathan Vardy.

The talented ruckman forward has only just recovered from persistent hip problems that restricted his on-ground output only to suffer a season-ending ACL tear.

But the Read the Play ambassador is staying positive, according to campaign patron and former Geelong Cats president Frank Costa.

Vardy and netballer Tegan Caldwell were among a number of high-profile sports stars to volunteer to help the burgeoning program, aimed at raising awareness of the issues of mental health among young people.

Established in Geelong in 2006, Read the Play has had the backing of Kempe Engineering since inception, reaching hundreds of boys and girls in underage football and netball competitions around the region each year.

“When Nathan arrived he had such a bright future, only to be told by some doctors he would never play again because of his hip injury,” Mr Costa said.

“But he worked hard to get himself right and then does his ACL. “We face growing numbers of young people with depression for no apparent reason,” he said.

“They have a good home and background and often good sporting ability. But the pressures we live under these days means it could strike anyone.

“But that’s also why using young role models like Nathan has given this program its traction because young people can relate.”

Warrnambool, the Latrobe Valley and South Gippsland, Bunbury and Karratha in Western Australia and Murrumbidgee in New South Wales have all adopted the program.

A CHRISTIAN education agency will visit Torquay to figure out how sexually explicit Biblezines were handed out to sixth-grade children.

Students at Torquay College received booklets claiming masturbation and homosexuality were sinful and that revealing clothes invited sexual assault after graduating from an Access Ministries Christian education program last year.

The magazines also claimed condoms promoted promiscuity and safe sex was a lie.

ACCESS Ministries is an inter-denominational body provid-

ing Christian education and chaplaincy in state schools to more than 200,000 children.

ACCESS chief executive officer Evonne Paddison said the organisation would investigate the unauthorised distribution of the magazines.

“We understand that for a number of years the combined churches of Torquay have generously donated Bibles to those students graduating from the ACCESS ministries’ Christian Religious Education program. This was done with the permission of the principal,” Ms Paddison said.

“In 2013 this alternative material was distributed to a small number of students in error. AC-

CESS ministries wants to make it clear it did not authorise the distribution of this material.”

Ms Paddison said the ACCESS curriculum taught the basic beliefs of the Christian faith and did “not stray into areas of sexuality at all”.

“We are extremely disappointed that this has occurred and will continue to investigate how it happened.

“We work very hard to ensure that our volunteers, who give up so much of their time to serve school communities, are welltrained and equipped to treat all children, parents and teachers with respect.”

In response, a trial starts Monday 3 March restricting trucks from travelling through the Central Geelong area unless they are making deliveries.

The trial aims to reduce the number of trucks using Malop St as an east-west thoroughfare as this is the heart of the city with the most pedestrians.

The goal is a more pleasant and safe city centre.

Camping fee anger

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG region campers face a $30,000 fee hike if State Government goes ahead with plans to introduce charges in national parks, according to camping organisations.

Australian Campers Association (ACA) and Victorian Outdoor Providers Network (VOPN) say the new fee regime was being “rushed through”.

“This ill-conceived proposal

appears to try to address an internal Parks Victoria budget shortfall with a misguided attempt at a new user pays model,” ACA chief David Petherick said.

“The proposal ... seems to be focused on a maximum cash grab without an associated explanation where this money is going.”

VOPN’s Tony Pammer said the proposal threatened a levy for non-existent services.

“These are basic sites where

there isn’t infrastructure and no demand for infrastructure and should remain free,” he said.

“It might put amenities where there are none, so we would see a gold-plating of basic sites. It could drive people into places where there shouldn’t be any camping.”

Environment Minister Ryan Smith’s spokesperson said the fee structure was still under assessment.

Consultations with stake-

holders had pushed back the implementation from 1 March to 1 July, she said.

“The current camping fee structure is not sustainable. All other states and territories, except Victoria, charge for basic camping.

“Not charging at some camping sites and charging an inconsistent amount at others means that Parks Victoria is running at an $11.3 million loss each year.”

Letters Write on, readers HOW many people do readers know who have been fined at intersection of The Boulevard and Melbourne Rd, Norlane, outside Bunnings?

Judging by the number of letters to the Independent, it must be hundreds. After the Independent published our letter about the heavy fine and three demerit points we received in June, many friends and neighbours have told me they too have been fined.

Something is wrong with those lights.

I wrote to Member for Geelong Ian Trezise who has read to parliament a letter from a disgruntled constituent about this very intersection.

I have also written to the Road Safety Camera Commissioner detailing my issue and asking for a review. The commissioner’s email address is commissioner@cameracommissioner.vic.gov.au.

To date I have only had an acknowledgement but I strongly urge readers to write to the commissioner if they are genuinely outraged.

I hope this gets fixed soon before more normallyvery-careful drivers get caught in this mysterious trap.

Neville off track IN FALSELY claiming that V/Line experienced “significant drops in (train) punctuality on the Geelong line in the last two months”, (Independent, 14 February), Labor’s Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville was clearly comparing apples with oranges.

When Geelong-line commuters more sensibly compare the same months year on year, a different picture emerges. In December 2013 V/Line’s Geelong line trains were counted as on time on 88.3 per cent of trips. This was markedly better than the 82.5 per cent in December 2012.

During January 2014, 84.5 per cent of trains on this popular line were on time, an improvement of more than three per cent on January 2013’s 81.3 per cent.

Ms Neville omitted mention of how under Labor in December 2009, its last December in government, just 79.5 per cent of V/Line Geelong line trains were on time.

Putting it another way, more than one in five Geelong-line trains were tardy under Labor in that month.

Limit growth to save our coastline REGARDING the Independent’s 14 February story headlined ‘New call for coast lockup’, the Bellarine Peninsula is a beautiful place and the findings in our The Coasts is Unclear Report aims to keep it that way.

Of the 96 per cent of coasts in public hands, around two thirds are within national parks and other types of conservation reserves, not the 98 per cent as claimed by Tony De Domenico.

This public land is often narrow strips a few metres wide above high-water marks.

The coastal nature that is protected is coming under increasing pressure from adjoining land uses and proposals to allow commercial development within them.

CLOUDS GATHERING: Growth pressures threaten our coastal areas, according to Victorian National Parks Association.

There is no danger of coastal towns becoming “ghost towns”. In most cases, especially near Melbourne and Geelong, their populations are growing.

However, it is widely recognised that there need to be limits on their spatial growth to protect the coastal landscapes

between them, otherwise the coastal landscapes that everyone wishes to enjoy will be lost.

Our recommendations to prevent subdivisions between existing towns along the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula are consistent with the Victorian Coastal Strategy and what has been government policy to establish township boundaries designed to protect the coastal landscapes between them.

Let’s hope Mr De Domenico was not serious when he suggested that people should be allowed to build on the foreshore, which in most cases is extremely scarce public land.

Put park to poll

AS A resident and a member of a community group supporting Ocean Grove Park, I am appalled we are not allowed to have a vote on such an important and vital decision as the park’s future.

It seems unconstitutional and undemocratic that the decision on council taking ownership of the park lies virtually with one person and his opinion is not the same as that of the majority.

We don’t want any building on it, especially one as big as what is being touted. The park is too small to house a conference/performance facility.

A preferred site would be Kingston Park or the old footy ground or even the vacant land at the corner of Tuckfield St and The Parade. Even better would be putting aside parkland for this facility rather than building houses upon houses in huge estates. Plan ahead, council, and don’t take our park.

THE ISSUE of Ocean Grove Park needs clarity and proper consultation.

A flyer in the letterbox several years ago about a proposed performance space and an ad in a local paper is not consultation. No one was aware until mid-2013 that council funding would only be provided if council took over the land and, even then, it was a brief mention in a local paper.

Those who know about the proposed transfer are furious but don’t know how to object. Most have no idea what is being proposed.

Many older residents have said they “don’t want to make trouble”. I don’t either but honesty, transparency and an open consultation process are clearly needed.

Community ownership and protection of the park was hard-fought. The community must be given the chance to vote on who owns its future.

Give neighbours a say REGARDING ‘A matter of Trust’ in last week’s Independent, is this another Harding Park or Geelong Golf Club fiasco, with the community excluded from decision-making?

Ocean Grove’s Jacquie Harris tried to save the park when the Uniting Church planned to sell it in the 1990s and set about creating a festival to raise funds. The first Tranquility Fair, in January 1999, raised about $8000.

City of Greater Geelong recently advised that it cannot disclose the owner due to privacy reasons. I thought it was held in Trust for Nature’s hands.

If Ocean Grove wants to keep the park as green space, it must fight for the community’s rights without fear or favour.

What is being offered seems a coup for the community at large but might not be ideal for those living nearby. Shouldn’t these residents have a say?

Illegal by definition I AM SICK and tired of reading, seeing and hearing how so-called boat people are hard done by when their names are placed on the bottom of the immigration list.

Many are illegal queue-jumpers who should not be in this country ahead of refugees legally awaiting immigration. Australia operates under the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 protocol, to which Australia is a signatory.

The definition of a refugee is: Any person who, owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his or her nationality and, unable or owing to such fears, is unwilling to avail himself or herself of the protection of that country.

First and foremost, an asylum seeker has to be a refugee to fulfil the definition. Most of our so-called refugees are seeking a better way of life and do not fit the definition, therefore they are not considered asylum seekers.

They are, as the Australian Government has stated, illegal immigrants.

By MICHELLE HERBISON WHEN the members of Boom Crash Opera get together they rock like they’re still on tour 20 years ago with something to prove, according to frontman Peter Farnan.

He told the Independent the band was back to establish and reinforce its legacy.

“We’re very much on our front foot. We were always striving to get somewhere and we kind of still feel like that.”

Other creative endeavours have taken centre-stage for the band’s members since their heyday in the ’80s and ’90s when they produced hits such as Onion Skin, Hands Up In The Air and Her Charity.

Farnan has been busy composing for theatre and feature films, while drummer Peter Maslan plays with Mark Seymour’s band.

“We can go for three months without seeing each other,” Farnan laughed.

But the fire still burns for Boom Crash Opera’s unique sound, with Farnan and Maslan being joined by Greg O’Connor, Dale Ryder, Ian Tilley and occasionally, Richard Pleasance.

“There’s such a legacy of hits there and a band ethos and communal energy that only happens when that group of people come together,” Farnan explained.

“I think the name of the band is really well known and we’ve got a few songs in the repertoire that people will recognise but they won’t necessarily realise it was our song.”

albums in a boxed set alongside a new album of rare material previously recorded but never released.

“Everything was vetted,” Farnan recalled of the days of what he termed “corporate rock”.

“You’d write and record an album of material then that would be scrapped and you’d write and record another album. This often happened and we copped it a lot.

“We look back now and go, ‘These songs are fantastic’.”

Farnan also wrote two new songs for the album boxed set, inspired by friend and cancer sufferer Connie Johnson whose brother Samuel recently unicycled around Australia in the Love Your Sister campaign.

Boom Crash Opera will feature alongside a string of local and visiting acts at Geelong Showgrounds’ inaugural Motor City Music Festival on 7 to 9 March.

THE addition of a two-piece horn section to Chris Wilson’s Crown of Thorns will add an extra element to the reformed band’s sound at Motor City Music Festival.

The renowned bluesman and stalwart of the Geelong and Melbourne music scenes told the Independent that he had “come round to the idea” of reforming the successful band at the suggestion of guitarist/vocalist Barbara Waters.

Crown of Thorns toured the east coast and South Australia throughout the mid-to-late ’80s, releasing two albums, Babylon and Carnival, and an EP, Gnawing on the Bones of Elvis.

“There was a really vibrant scene in Melbourne at the time and we were part of that scene,” Wilson recalled.

“We had a pretty good time with it, actually. We did a lot of really good supports for really good bands and a lot of stuff on our own - with Mick Taylor who played with the Rolling Stones and with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds at the Forum in Melbourne.”

Wilson, renowned for his blues harmonica, guitar and vocals, described the band’s sound as “hard to pigeon-hole”.

“It had a sprinkling of blues in it but it was original stuff. It had a folk element and a country element and a blues element in it.

“I guess it’s what you’d call at that time as part of independent music,” he concluded, settling on the often-used description.

Band-members Wilson, Waters, bassist Chris Rogers and drummer Ashley Davies had all continued with music but Crown of Thorns’ hiatus had been more than two decades, he said.

“A lot of the songs in that band hadn’t been played for quite a while and I thought they were still worthy of

AUTHENTIC Italian recipes are behind the delicious thin-crust pizzas and mouth-watering pastas at Grovedale’s The Pizza Factorie.

Customers ordering pizza deliveries to the 3216 area, including Armstrong Creek, have already started getting to know friendly and prompt delivery man Dirk, just one of many passionate family-members involved in the new business.

Owners Gerry, Katrina and Chris opened the shop in August after working with Gerry’s brother Frank at The Mobile Pizzeria.

“We all worked together for about four years prior to this then we thought we’d go and open a shop ourselves,” Gerry explains.

As Geelong born and bred locals, The Pizza Factorie’s crew are proud to sponsor South Barwon Cricket Club and Grovedale Football Club.

The secret to The Pizza Factorie’s incredible pizzas is in the dough - Nonna’s recipe brought over from Italy, made fresh daily, Gerry explains.

When it comes to toppings, The Pizza Factorie only uses fresh ingredients, Katrina adds.

“We buy all our vegetables and slice them here.”

Customers can choose from 26 varieties of pizza, including gluten free base options, and six pastas.

Gerry says three of the crowd favourites lately have been Aussie (tomato, cheese, ham, bacon and egg), the Factorie special (tomato, cheese, ham, hot salami, bacon, onion and capsicum) and gourmet vegetarian (pesto, cheese, mushrooms, olives, roast capsicum, sundried tomatoes, garlic and herbs).

The Pizza Factorie is open for dinner from 4.30pm Tuesdays to Sundays and for lunch from 11.30am Fridays.

IndyMotor Changing direction NISSAN Pathfinder has been on sale in Australia since 1987 and has established a well-earned reputation as a reasonably tough 4WD off-roader.

It is not quite in the same class as vehicles such as its Nissan Patrol sibling or Toyota’s LandCruiser but it’s rugged enough to attract plenty of rural sales.

With the arrival of its fourth-generation model in late 2013 Pathfinder has been caught up in the SUV surge and now not only comes with the option of two or four-wheel drive but also loses the extra grunt of diesel power.

Now that the switch to SUV has been made the need for a body-onframe chassis has gone and new Pathfinder has returned to the monocoque construction used in the middle period of the vehicle’s life.

Likewise a manual gearbox has been dropped and the previous five and seven-speed automatics replaced by continuously variable transmission (CVT).

In line with the structural and powertrain changes, Pathfinder has now taken on a softer, smoother appearance aimed clearly at urban buyers.

The square, boxy look of the pre-

vious model has been replaced with a much more fashionable contemporary look with a flowing roofline, new headlights and small rear spoiler.

The new Pathfinder is larger in all dimensions including 195mm extra length which enables all models to now seat seven in a two-three-two format.

The third row is relatively easy to access through large side doors although, as usual, children are the preferred occupants.

Nissan quoted boot space with all seats in place at 453 litres, there’s also an underfloor segmented area.

There is just one drivetrain offered, a 3.5-litre 190 kW petrol V6 and CVT. The engine is the well-established unit that we’ve driven in vehicles ranging from the Nissan 350Z sports car to the new Altima sedan.

While no diesel is planned a supercharged-petrol/electric hybrid model will be added to the range around mid-2014.

Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is rated at 9.9 litres per 100 km with 2WD and 10.2 L/100 km with the extra weight in the 4WD. With demand for SUVs, especially those with two-wheel drive, growing dramatically the new Pathfinder now ticks plenty of boxes.

IndySport Geelong tuning up GEELONG Cricket Club goes into the final round of the season sitting nicely in third position after an impressive outright victory against Hawthorn-Monash University last Saturday.

The Cats declared on their overnight score of 3/264, leading by 115 runs. The only problem was that star bowler Jake Reed was unavailable after his selection to make his first-class debut for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield at Adelaide.

But the confident Cats overcame his absence, with the remaining bowlers dismissing the visitors for just 89 from 32 overs.

Spin was the order of the day, as Luke Muller (3/28) and Aaron Finch (3/16) bowled well in tandem to claim a memorable victory.

Geelong travels to Melbourne University this Saturday for a game in which the Cats will look to fine tune their form before finals begin in a fortnight.

Geelong Cricket Association also begins its final home-and-away round this weekend, with a two-day match scheduled for the next two Saturdays.

In division one, Geelong West hangs onto sixth place by a thread, with 34 points after 12 rounds and facing a tricky match against South Barwon. But three teams

are on 30 points, with each awaiting their chance to take the last spot off Geelong West.

Geelong City has come from nowhere to sit seventh. With Richard Oliver coming off a brilliant double century last game, the Sharks will have nothing to lose when they take on ladder-leader North Geelong this Saturday.

Eighth-placed Murgheboluc is still a chance, although it plays St Joseph’s this round and will need to be at its best to win.

The last team still a finals chance, Newtown & Chilwell, takes on reigning premier East Belmont at Stinton Oval.

The Lions are always tough to beat but their form has been patchy of late. No doubt scores will be flying around town as teams look to not only worry about their own games but also what is happening elsewhere.

New courts pass test MORE than 350 badminton players from all over Victoria and interstate tested out new international standard Badminton Geelong courts last weekend.

Badminton Geelong Development Officer Craig Booley said the six new Taraflex courts were laid in preparation for the 2014 Clendinnen Shield and

Australian Closed Badminton Championships in August and September.

Geelong will host the Clendinnen Shield, the top state-based teams tournament in Australia, for the first time.

The stadium at Corio Leisure Centre will host two other MASTERFUL: Badminton Geelong’s Craig Booley and tournament major tournaments next month. coordinator Jane Marney at the masters event in Corio.

Tuna and kingfish offshore ANGLERS chased massive bait shoals in settled conditions offshore last Sunday, finding stripey and small bluefin tuna.

Gunter Marshall found the fish in 50 metres off Anglesea, returning with a few stripeys to 3.5kg and a couple of bluefins around 5kg. He caught all his fish on Pakula Micro Uzis.

Paul Stephens fished off Barwon Heads where he boated four kingfish around 4kg on knife jigs. He said anglers nearby caught kings on bait and trolled lures.

Stuart McGregor used a berley trail to catch flathead at the entrance to Swan Bay, although a shoal of salmon to 1.5kg really kept him busy on bait and lure.

Bendigo’s Donna and Michael Hart found salmon around the face of The Rip where surface action made finding the fish easy. They spent hours casting small soft plastics, catching and releasing almost 50 fish.

Whiting were busier, with many anglers reporting good captures at first light on the grass beds off St Leonards.

George Martin spent many hours in the shallows of Hermsley but bagged out on squid to just over 1kg, with small white jigs working best.

A tail wind helped me cast small metal lures a considerable distance from the rocks at the entrance to Corio Quay on Saturday. I managed two pike of 80cms.

Craig Armour spun the rocks just past Lorne on Sunday, finding plenty of salmon to 900 grams on high tide.

The snapper were quiet, with the best snapper report from Corey Carter who drifted the spoil grounds off Leopold. He caught three fish around the 2kg on soft plastics.

Herb Mann cast soft plastics along the outer wall of Royal Geelong Yacht Club where he hooked up a clearly big fish but lost it when his line parted 15 minutes into the fight.

Herb packed up and headed in for lunch but retuned an hour later to see a fish splashing on the surface clearly in trouble - it turned out to be the 74cm mulloway he lost earlier.

Bream, trevally and mullet were caught in reasonable numbers in the Barwon River estuary. Bass yabby baits were best, followed by shrimp and sandworm.

The Barwon River upstream of Buckley Falls produced redfin on small bibbed lures or soft plastics such as the Fish Arrow minnow patterns, especially during the last two hours before dark.

Reports of redfin catches have also begun filtering in from Lake Colac.

Wurdi Boluc Reservoir returned a few nice redfin to 1kg, all were caught on lures such as Bob n Spoons and tiger minnows. The fish hug the bottom at the reservoir, so lures must be left to sink before retrieval.

This weekend’s afternoon tides look ideal for chasing snapper on the outer-harbour with bait around Wilson Spit or soft plastics on the shallower water of the spoil grounds.
