JIM FAGAN Fed up with people befouling the bush with household goods and rubbish, Noosa Council law officers are stepping up their patrols and monitoring illegal dumping spots.

And the old days of apprehended first timers being warned and told to clean it up are over. “There’s no such thing as a Get Out of Jail Free card anymore,” Council CEO, Brett de Chastel told Noosa Today. “We’re ramping up our patrols and prosecuting to the full extent of the legislation.”

Penalties under the State’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 are severe. Dumping domestic items like washing machines, garden waste or construction leftovers, depending on volume, can bring fines ranging from $1,760 to $110,000 and if you cause serious environmental harm and fail to clean it up then expect to pay $220,000 if it goes to court.

FUNDING BID AFTER COWARD’S PUNCH ISOBEL COLEMAN One Punch Can Kill campaigners this week renewed their bid for government funding after an innocent man lost his life in Mooloolaba on Friday night.

Bruce Steensen, 53, a friend and mentor to many on the Coast, was simply trying to “do the right thing”, according to Ross Thompson, GM of the Queensland Homicide Victims’ Support Group (QHVSG).

“There have been too many of these cases lately but this one has really brought it home as Bruce was a muchloved member of the community,” Ross said.

“Having spoken with friends and family this week, we know Bruce was a totally innocent victim, just trying to calm the situation down.

“Because that was him, a giving, caring sort of guy.”

FUEL LINES CUT The man charged with twice cutting the fuel lines of the Noosa Coast Guard rescue boat will plead guilty to 17 charges, Noosa Magistrates Court heard on Tuesday.

The man appeared to face 17 charges including three counts of wilful damage, four counts of stealing and three counts of the unlawful entry of a vehicle.

Most of the charges relate to two incidents last year when the Coast Guard’s key vessel “Davo’s Rescue” had the fuel lines cut twice in one month, putting the crew in danger when they carried out patrols and rescues.

The man is due to appear in Noosa Magistrates Court on March 18 and is expected to plead guilty to all charges.

WILD TURKEY DOWN PANTS Don’t get caught with your pants down - that was the candid advice from Shine Lawyers’ spokesperson and environmental crusader Erin Brockovich.

Talking with Noosa Today at the Peregian Beach Veggie Village, Ms Brockovich said commu-

nities needed to create emergency plans to protect their most precious resource - water.

“I think we need to be more aware, we need to have regulations in place that protect our water supply, we need to have contingency and back-up plans if we have a problem with our water supply,” she said.

Ms Brockovich said communities can face dire consequences if their main water supply is con-

taminated and there is no “back-up plan” in place.

She said Charlestown in West Virginia, US, was an example of what can go wrong after a suspected 5,000 gallons of cleaning chemical leaked into the water supply in January, leaving more than 300,000 residents without water.

“Everyone got caught with their pants down as there were no plans in place. We’re in serious trouble,” she said.

“We need, as an entire, global society, to find out how we’re going to protect and preserve what we have, not pollute what we have and be prepared for back-up and emergency plans. Because the day will come, we just saw it in the US. “I hope that at a community level, at an agency level, you do everything you can to protect and sustain the supplies you have,” she said. “Water is the single most necessary element to sustain all of life.”

A 21-year-old Caloundra man has been charged with his murder.

Noosa Today was shocked to hear that QHVSG receives no funding.

“People are always surprised when they hear that because we are so proactive as a group,” Ross said.

“We have been lobbying State and Federal government for funding for the One Punch Can Kill campaign so that we can do more. This

recent incident highlights the need to go a lot broader than we can do on our own.

“We desperately need funds so we can get out there and educate young adults, our future lead-

ers, about how to behave in public,” Ross said.

“We go into schools across the state, and regularly on the Sunshine Coast, to spread the word and try and save lives.”

Mr Steensen was heavily involved with the AFL Masters Football Queensland and Ross said the club was devastated.

“People don’t believe just one punch can kill, but it can. Or it can maim and leave somebody with brain damage.

“We have started calling it the coward’s punch, instead of king-hit. It’s a coward who does this. It really is a low act.”

A man faced Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with stuffing a bottle of Wild Turkey down his pants before leaving a Noosa Heads liquor store in January.

The court heard CCTV footage shows the man also tried to conceal a bottle of wine in his pants before proceeding to the counter to pay for three tall-neck beers.

The man’s distinctive tattoos lead to him being identified as the offender in the CCTV footage.

The man was ordered to pay $48 for the bottle of Wild Turkey and fined $400 for the offence.

DRINK DRIVING A woman was caught drink-driving on Australia Day after Police saw her driving with no lights on and doing a u-turn on double lines in Noosa Heads.

The 24-year-old woman appeared in Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.179 per cent.

The woman was fined $900 and disqualified from driving for seven months.

JIM FAGAN Noosa Councillor Joe Jurisevic held out the plastic bag of cigarette butts with all the irritation of a greenie who has just seen a KFC carton thrown out of a car window. “Hey Bill’s just brought them in. His girls picked them up at Main Beach between Berardo’s and the surf club on Sunday.

“Stink, don’t they. I blame Hollywood movies. Remember how the stars used to finish their smoke and grind it out on the footpath. That’s now become the norm. People just think they can do the same or stick them in the sand like this lot.”

Noosa Today had called to see Joe about his plans for Clean Up Australia Day this Sunday. He’s the local co-ordinator and has been for the last five years. His passion is keeping our roads, bushlands and waterways the way nature intended and not polluted with people’s unwanted garbage.

He said he first became interested in picking up rubbish years ago while walking the dog. “I would see some litter and pick it up and the more I walked and picked up the more I realised something needed to be done about it.

“I’ve always been involved in Clean Up Australia Day, ever since Ian Kiernan started it. In Noosa it was co-ordinated by the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association and in 2009 I asked the president, Tony Haslem, if he would mind if I took it on board and ran it. He said, ‘Go for it.’

“The message of recycling isn’t filtering through to the community. People are still tending to throw things away, discarding them into the environment or putting them in the wrong bin so that it’s not actually going into the recycle stream. Unfortunately, I see the worst of what the public does and it frustrates me.

There a very simple message when you create the waste, do the right thing and put it in the bin.”

Last year there were about 400 workers. Joe is hoping for more and is also crossing his fingers for fine weather. Rain dampened enthusiasm last year and several sites were closed.

Kerbside collection returns to Noosa For much of the Noosa community it was a ‘non-negotiable’ part of winning their council back, so the return of kerbside bulk rubbish collections will come as no surprise.

Noosa Council’s Infrastructure committee, chaired

by Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot, recommended the return of the service, and the full council has wasted no time giving it the green light.

The kerbside collection will run over a seven-week period from late April to early June.

Councillor Joe Jurisevic is one of those cheering loudest about the return of the free service.

He said it was no coincidence that illegal dumping around Noosa Shire increased dramatically since that decision was made.

While some council staff raised the possibility of legal problems with piles of junk potentially tripping the unwary or injuring children, Cr Abbot said there had been no problems in the past and he doesn’t expect any now.

The return of kerbside bulk rubbish collections is seen as one of the community’s first expectations of the new council, with surveys showing it consistently high on the list of former Noosa Council initiatives that people miss the most.

Clean Up Australia Day is this Sunday and Noosa co-ordinator, Councillor Joe Jurisevic, said before amalgamation his volunteers used to collect about two tonnes of rubbish each Clean Up Day “and then the Sunshine Coast Council discontinued kerbside clean ups. Each year I’ve seen the rubbish increase.

From two tonnes, it became four then six and last year we cleaned up nine tonnes. That was phenomenal.”

Noosa Council will resume kerbside collections in April and Joe is hoping illegal dumping will be reduced but “you will still have people saying, ‘I’m not going to take this to the tip. I object to the price of it. I’d rather dump it in the bush.’ It’s hard to believe but there’s one particular dump site which is used regularly and it’s less than a kilometre from the tip.

“The dumpers don’t see there’s a cost to the environment, to our community and a cost to ratepayers to rectify it.”

Noosa Today asked the council’s co-ordinator of waste management, Wayne Schafer, how much it cost to take white goods and other domestic items to the council tip on Eumundi Road. This may surprise some illegal dumpers but there is a great deal that costs absolutely nothing.

“Stoves, washing machines, those sorts of things are free. We require refrigerators to be de-gassed. If they’re not de-gassed, we charge $15 to do the job. Any of the whitegoods in your home that have lots of metal in them are free at the dump. We take car bodies, gas bottles that have no gas, anything that has lots of metal.

“We also take cardboard for free as well as recyclable material you would put in your recyclable bin at home.

“We don’t charge for household quantities of oil and chemicals. If you’ve done an oil change in your car and you have four litres of oil we’ll accept that. Pesticides and paint, provided they’re secured, we will take them for free.

“We have a dump shop there and they are happy to accept reusable items. There are lots of savings for people.”

“We want to move quickly,” Narelle Reid, executive assistant to the Mayor and CEO Brett de Chastel told Noosa Today.

“The aim of all this is to get more community involvement and understanding.”

“A lot of people have come out with ideas that have nothing to do with the management model, rather more what they think council should do, things like tourism, transport, litter.

“We don’t want to lose those either so were going to take them aside and have a different assessment process for them.”

“We want people to understand this is not really a competitive process. We want things that are innovative.”

Told about Noosa Today’s street survey which revealed few people knew really what Biosphere Reserve was, Narelle said that problem would be part of the discussion with the working group and the people who had put in submissions.

The meetings on Tuesday March 4, and Tuesday, March 11, will be held between 5.30 and 8pm at the Council Chambers, Tewantin.

Wheels of progress turning at Noosa Council Noosa Council is testing what could turn out to be the start of a quiet, electric revolution on our local roads. As part of the council car pool, they’re getting behind the wheel of a Nissan LEAF which uses only electricity, and is recharged from the solar system on top of the council’s Tewantin chamber.

The all-electric car took about 20 years to develop and is on a six-week council trial.

While it’s limited to between 130km and 150km without a recharge, that fits the size of Noosa Shire just fine.

While electricity could be powering more of the council fleet in the future, the possibilities for cleaner, innovative transport in Noosa could go

Mayor Noel Playford has long been interested in the idea of smart Noosa buses, designed to be open and accessible for our climate and lifestyle and - hopefully electric as well.

The mayor said specially-designed Noosa buses could be a big drawcard for locals and tourists, encouraging more people to leave their cars at home and showing

what can be achieved with a blend of innovation and environmental awareness.

The Nissan LEAF is already turning heads, with Council staff impressed by its performance and statistics.

Not only is it running completely free of emissions and charged with 100 per cent green power, the car itself is mostly recyclable. Even the seats are made from recycled plastic soft drink bottles.

Libraries to separate March 25 Noosa Library members will need a new library card from March 25 when the Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa Council libraries separate. The first stage of the separation has already taken place with Noosa now responsible for the operation and management of its library buildings at Noosaville.

Cooroy, the mobile library and eLibrary

Noosa members will only be able to use their cards in these libraries. All membership benefits will remain the same as before and members can still borrow up to 30 items for three weeks, and be able to pick-up and drop off items at Cooroy, Noosaville and the mobile library.

NOOSA Heritage cottage “deteriorating” JIM FAGAN Noosa Council will be asked to act on finding a new site for Noosa icon, Tait Duke Cottage, following a recommendation by council officers at Tuesday’s meeting of the council’s infrastructure and services committee.

The heritage cottage was given to Noosa Council by Esme Tait in 2004 on condition it be made available for community use in Tewantin.

In 2009 Sunshine Coast Council decided to relocate it from 84 Poinciana Avenue, Tewantin to Wallace Park on a temporary basis where it is now, according to the council’s co-ordinator of sport and community development, Alison Hamblin, “deteriorating.”

The committee agreed that to “preserve the heritage values and character of Wallace Park and provide parking land options” Tait Duke Cottage had to be moved away from its present site. It was agreed this should be done and recommended an allocation of $80,000 be made available for this.

It also agreed to look at the suitability of land at Earl Street, Tewantin, for the possible relocation of the cottage and, once this was resolved, seek expressions of interest from community groups.

Council beach permits put on hold JIM FAGAN High use/high impact permits for commercial uses like learn to surf, beach kayak, food vending and beach massage on community land are likely to be put on hold until the Noosa Council has decided just what it wants to do about its future policy on applications for permits.

On Tuesday the council’s planning and organising committee was given a report by co-ordinator of property and land manage-

ment, Clint Irwin, who said Noosa’s Main Beach and areas near it were a huge attraction for permit holders due to its north-facing aspect and high numbers of visitors.

“At the moment there are 14 activities being undertaken by 11 permit holders. The appeal of Noosa, combined with the return of the council, has encouraged all kinds of businesses to apply for permission on community land.”

He said earlier this month council officers had spoken with current Main Beach permit holders. Common themes were the area could not support more surf school, kayaking or beach hire activities if current businesses were to remain viable.

Major saving on council cars A 28 per cent saving or $412,009 has been made on the cost of Noosa Council’s leased vehicle fleet, the council’s planning and organisation committee was told on Tuesday.

The council’s co-ordinator,

procurement and fleet, Phil Parkman, said in a report to the committee that as part of the de-amalgamation process 109 Sunshine Coast Council leased vehicles were transferred to Noosa.

Council organisational directors were asked to review the leased vehicles to find out how

many vehicles were required to deliver services. It was found only 79 of the 109 should be retained.

Mr Parkman said pool vehicle arrangements were now being made. Twenty of the remaining vehicles were under private use arrangements as part of employment contracts. These vehicles

will now be used as part of the Council pool fleet across the various sites and this will avoid the need for a separate pool fleet.

He said Mayor Noel Playford and CEO Brett de Chastel did not have the use of a council car as they wanted to “contribute towards Council’s sustainability.”

What concerns me, when we decide how we are going to approach this, is do we intend to expand beyond those businesses already operating or whether it is open slather on all council community land? In tough times, many small business owners make the mistake of cutting expenses, not realising that it’s always easier (and often quicker) to increase sales.

One simple, proven strategy for increasing sales that I’m amazed more retailers don’t use is the ‘puppy testdrive’ strategy. You know the one – where the pet store owner lets you buy the puppy, take it home and return it at any time, no questions asked. So you take the puppy home . . . and well, you know how the story ends - 98 per cent of the time your family has a new permanent addition.

This is a strategy I’ve recommended to clients in the past with great success. Whether you’re selling a tangible product or a service, giving people the opportunity to trial your product or service dramatically increases their chances of buying it with minimal cost to you.

I recently purchased a piece of furniture for my home that I

almost didn’t buy. I was examining it in the store, trying to imagine how it would go with my other furniture.

I couldn’t decide and was thinking ‘when in doubt, don’t’.

At that very moment, a lovely sales assistant approached me and said ‘If you’re anything like me, you find it hard to visualise things unless you can actually see how they’re going to look.

Why don’t you take it and if it doesn’t work, you can return it for a full refund.”

These two sentences delivered a wonderful customer experience for

me and won the sale. The piece fits perfectly in my home, so there was no need to return it.

It’s worth noting that had I purchased it and wanted to return it straight away, the store would have provided a refund. But rather than hiding it in the fine print, the store owner is leveraging the refund message in a way that’s proactive and builds rapport and sales with customers.

There are loads of ways you can execute this – free trial, full money-back guarantee or a small up-front payment and the balance processed if it’s not returned within 30 days. You could even establish a customer advisory board to ‘test-drive’ a product and then make them an irresistible offer to purchase at the end of the trial.

Getting your product or service into the hands of potential buyers may not make them purchase it every single time, but the risk to you is minimal.

Just do whatever it takes to ensure they connect with your product or service in the same way they would a cute, fluffy puppy. Then they’ll never want to hand it back.

From New Zealand to Melbourne, Louise attended AIME which is the largest international business expo in Australia for those involved in organising business travel, meetings, incentives and events. This market - often referred to as the MICE market is a very lucrative and important one for Noosa. Generally speaking conference groups stay midweek, utilise a property with a conference room, will often dine out at other venues as a group, experience tours within the region and their average spend is often considerably higher than a leisure traveller. Louise reported there was much interest in Noosa particularly with new products and refurbished properties keeping Noosa in the spotlight.

Attending trade shows and expos such as these are all part of the important market mix of promoting Noosa to our key markets and the team at Tourism Noosa will continue to market the region and promote the destination as a great place to visit.

Tough challenge for Tewantin teacher When local teacher Kelli-jo Leslie set out with more than 90 other riders to cycle from Geelong to Warnambool along the Great Ocean Road over three days, it wasn’t just for the love of cycling. It was also to raise awareness and funds for

charities which help children in poverty.

25000spins was created by Craig Shipton, a social entrepreneur who had a vision to make a difference for children in poverty across the world, by staging ‘Adventures with Heart’.

The inaugural event was held in 2009 when he and a small group of cyclists

rode from London to Athens. Since then over $700,000 has been raised for charity via committed and enthusiastic cyclists in events staged in Australia and overseas.

Tewantin resident Kelli-jo, a secondary teacher from Noosa Christian College, Cooroy, trained regularly in the lead up to the event. Despite her preparation, the first day proved

tough going.

“Everyone struggled in the last 20km of the first day,” she said. “We had really strong head winds pushing against us which made things difficult - we even had to pedal hard going downhill!”

For Kelli-jo there is satisfaction in the physical and mental achievement of the course, but there is also a deep

The visit is part of the ‘Bringing Boys Back to Books’ initiative that aims to use the exciting world of emergency services and safety to teach students from Cooroy State School about books and the power of literacy.

The campaign, made possible through a Sunshine Coast Council grant obtained by the Friends of Mill Place, is based on Greg’s book, Brave Dave the Platypus. The book tells how Dave saves his friend Scud, the water rat, from drowning in the creek. His other Australian animal friends help him rescue, resuscitate and heal Scud’s wounds - just like good mates do.

I have started collecting your articles. It’s delightful stuff, even for a non-surfer like me, because in between the surfing-related topics Phil never fails to squeeze in juicy bits on hot potato issues, like de-amalgamation, Bali, white shoe brigade, Australia Day, just to name a few, and the latest, Clive Palmer.

I watched the big man in person last week in Canberra, throwing his weight around during question time, using what Phil calls “dumbdown-or-bugger-off” tactics. It’s kind of scary, because most of us might survive losing a nice high-end resort like the one in Coolum, but we certainly can’t afford to lose our functioning parliamentary democracy.

Top of my list of favourite Phil Jarratt quotes, though, would be the one where he professes his gratitude to Noosa Parks Association, without which “we’d just be another Gold Coast”. How true! I mean, it’s just stating the obvious, isn’t it - at least to a blow-in from faraway shores like me. But, strangely, you won’t meet many locals ready to admit this undeniable fact. Why this is so, I cannot fathom. So, good on you, Phil, for being the exception, by giving credit where credit is due.

I look forward to your next succulent little opinion morsel.

OPEN FOR BUSINESS Given that the media must focus on high interest proposals, it’s understandable the 96-98 per cent of development applications that are

approved in Noosa Shire go mostly unnoticed. According to town planning records dating back to 2004, the rate of refusals varies between two and four per 100.

And professional town planning staff are available to help applicants understand more fully what type of developments may be permitted under the Noosa Planning Scheme.

There are also some 260 pre-approved lots ready to be built upon in Noosa Shire.

It is the developer’s right to commence construction on these when they believe the market will give maximum return on their investment.

Shame, Shame, Shame This is the sign outside the Cooroy bowls venue. The sign next to it says that the bowlers earned the award for the “2009 Club of the Year”.

Over 6000 games are played each year at this venue by mostly elderly and challenged people from Cooroy. What will these people do now? Many don’t drive or cannot drive distances. This is the last sport of their lives.

For some, it is their only social activity and exercise. Many groups including schools, sporting clubs, businesses and the disabled have used and continue to use the venue for their social activities like presentation days, break-ups and Christmas parties. Barefoot bowling is fun for all!

The board, the management and the ever powerful Sub Branch seem to not care about the bowls venue nor the bowlers. They need the funds from the sale to cover their own debts and to update their outdated Maple St premises.

I ask all members of the RSL to demand to see the financial reports of the bowls venue, demand to see the reports of the whole RSL. I would be surprised if 1, they give them to you, and 2, to see that the Opal St venue has been trading quite well.

When the bowls club amalgamated (turns out taken over), they had a debt of approximately $350,000, but they owned the block of land next door, which the RSL has recently sold for more than that. So they have the land and the building for free. Sure they have lost some money through their own bad decisions and very poor

Why drag the process out for three more months, when the applicant has already had more than a year to address the unsolvable problems this application imposes on the Cooroy and Ridgewood communities?

Even if the applicant does come up with an infrastructure agreement to upgrade Top Forestry Road (at great expense), the fact remains that the local roads, built for light traffic, will never cope with heavy vehicles, and residents along the route to the highway should never have to put up with the all-hours noise and dust fallout from passing trucks. And since noise, dust and odour are impossible to contain on the site, why should neighbours have to bear the brunt of the pollution these operations generate wherever they are located?

Tomorrow night, Friday, catch Hat Fitz and Cara at Noosa Arts Theatre from 7.30pm, for a combination of country blues and old time folk. The material is original yet crosses the boundaries as if written from a time once forgotten.

WAR HORSE Since its first performance at the National Theatre in 2007, War Horse has become an international smash hit.

Based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel and adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford, War Horse takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France. Filled with stirring music and songs, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-sized puppets by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Com-

pany, which bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.

There will now be four performances of this masterpiece showing at Noosa Arts Theatre: March 7 at 1pm and 7.30pm, March 9 at 6.30pm, and March 10 at 10am. Tickets are $25 with concession $20.

JO HENDRIE SINGS IN MINEFIELDS AND MINISKIRTS Minefields and Miniskirts features many iconic songs of the period written by female singer/songwriters including Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Carole King, Buffy St Marie and Melanie Safka.

Local Jo Hendrie plays the guitar in the play and brings her love of singing and extraordinary talents as a singer and entertainer to this production. Jo’s passion for the stage began in high school when she played lead roles in My Fair Lady, and Bye Bye Birdie and when she also developed her folk style of singing and playing guitar.

Since 2007 Jo has taught musical theatre classes at Noosa Professional Dance Academy, with students ranging in age from six to 18 years. Theatre-goers will remember her Miss Hannigan in Annie.

On show at Harbourside Catch some great exhibitions at Harbourside Gallery, Tewantin, during March.

Pam Miller will present a class exhibition, Brushes of Eight. This group of Pam’s students has been painting together for five years.

The group includes three abstract artists, two semi-abstract, a stylist and a primitive artist.

Pam herself makes up the eighth artist in the group.

IN LOVE WITH GLASS Guest artist Caroline Elliott will present Impressions in Glass. Caroline first fell in love with glass as a medium at 18 after being given a small stained glass bird as a gift. Since that time, as a primarily self taught artist, she has gained an incredible amount of pleasure creating fused glass art works.

For Caroline, glass has a magical quality that enchants and delights and she uses glass as a means to express her passions, bringing colours together for content and movement in her indi-

vidual glass creations.

Each project Caroline produces is unique. In making an art composition, each piece of glass is cut individually, and then all the pieces are positioned together in a kiln for fusing. The kiln fires the glass to 780 degrees Celsius to fuse and 670 degrees to slump. Fusing is the term used when combining several pieces of glass to make one solid piece; slumping is the term used to mould the flat glass into three dimensional shapes.

Sometimes Caroline manipulates the glass when it is at its maximum temperature in the kiln.

While this can be a bit dangerous, it also ensures that anyone who obtains a piece of her art can be certain they have a one-off product that they will never see on anyone else’s wall.

WEARABLE ART Fabric artists Robyn Davey, Sally Heron and Alexis Heitmann will present an exhibition of sculptured and wearable art.

Robyn Davey is a silk painter who also works with fibre to layer and sculpt art works and Sally Heron is ingenious with her use of re-

cycled fabrics and fibres in her original and vibrant works. Alexis Heitmann creates wearable art, known for its individuality and uniqueness.

A flying visit from the guru in pink LIFE OF BRINE PHIL JARRATT

One of my oldest mates in surfing, Australia’s first world professional champion, Peter Townend, made a welcome return to Noosa this week. It was a lightning visit, wedged between commitments on the Gold Coast and Sydney before flying back home to California, but we managed to fit in a couple of surf sessions at First Point and a good dinner.

The first world champion of the pro era won his 1976 title without winning a single event, and for much of his career he was destined to finish somewhere on the podium, but not on the top rung. Yet he was one of the most admired and flamboyant surfers on the tour, technically precise, consistent but capable of moments of great showmanship.

Townend (who became universally known by his initials, PT, very early in his career) was born on the Gold Coast in 1953 and raised at Coolangatta where he learnt to surf on rubber surfoplanes, Coolites and borrowed balsa boards. By the mid-1960s he was an accomplished surfer with a longboard of his own, but he did not make a competitive impact until after the shortboard breakthrough. By the start of the 1970s, however, as part of the “Coolangatta Kids” push, along with Michael Peter-

son and Rabbit Bartholomew, he had started to define himself as a surfer, drawing smooth lines along the point waves of Snapper Rocks and Kirra. While not as explosive as Peterson or Bartholomew, PT found the barrels just as often.

In 1971 he also began to define himself as a competitor, finishing second as a junior in the Australian titles, then starting a four-year run of seconds in the senior division the following year. Townend’s consistency paid off when he made the Australian team for the San Diego World Titles in 1972, finishing the highest-placed Australian with a third. By now he was considered to be a small wave stylist, the “four foot and under man”, as one writer put it. But PT, a small man with an intense countenance in those days, had a steely determination to make a career in surfing, and that meant proving himself in all conditions. Supporting himself as a surfboard shaper at Coolangatta, and later at Cronulla in Sydney’s south, he joined the “gypsy tour”, the unofficial circuit of pro events around the world. If you had a spectacular year, you might manage to cover your air fares, but mostly it was a negative cash flow situation. PT and other dedicated pros like Ian Cairns didn’t care. They had the vision for a world tour, they just had to make it happen.

down 30-foot faces. Suddenly a celebrity, he came home and threw himself enthusiastically into the development of the Australian Professional Surfers Association (APSA). Townend and Cairns were the new association’s most outspoken representatives, and both knew how to use the media, Cairns by coming up with the most outrageous and threatening sound bytes, Townend by pushing the surf star/rock star line. He wore pink and black jumpsuits and rode a quiver of matching hot pink surfboards. David Bowie’s ‘Fame’ was his favourite song. He perfected the soul arch bottom turn, combining ‘60s flair and ‘70s style.

PT’s act embarrassed some and amused others. As his frequent drinking buddy and fellow party animal at the time, I was in the latter camp. PT really did quaff flaming purple flyers by the dozen, dance on table-tops, then get up the next morning and surf a smart heat.

He was amazing.

and several other satellites. When the points were tallied, Peter Townend was the first official world professional surfing champion, despite not winning a single event. But no one could detract from his victory. PT had simply done what every touring pro has to do – perform consistently well throughout the season.

Townend and Cairns went on to form marketing troupe The Bronzed Aussies, which was basically an extension of PT’s rock star dream. But the whole thing began to unravel when PT took time off the tour in 1977 to double for actor Billy Katt in the surf drama Big Wednesday.

When he returned to the tour in 1978, he again managed to finish top five for several years, and to win his sole tour event (the Hang Ten in South Africa).

PT subsequently developed a successful career in publishing, media and marketing in the US, where he still lives today, running his own consultancy, ActivEmpire. But don’t be surprised if one day pretty soon he starts calling Queensland home again. I hope it’s not too long.

Pool phenomenon at RSL tonight World champion trick shot pool player, Florian “Venom” Kohler is bringing his magic to the Tewantin Noosa RSL on February 27, from 7pm.

Venom is a pool phenomenon, redefining the sport of trick shot pool though a combination of artistry and breathtaking skill. He has had his expertise featured on TV shows, commercials and movies, has his own DVD and a host of online videos.

Trick shot pool typically takes years to master, yet Venom first picked up a pool cue at the age of 18 and within two years, he was competing against trick shot pool pros that had been playing since before he was born.

It’s more than puppy love Thinking about getting a new puppy? Katrina Boyd of Kat’s 4 Dogs has some helpful advice.

Firstly it’s important to pick the right dog for you and your family. For example, if you work long hours and live in a small apartment, I wouldn’t recommend a high energy dog. Do some research into what breed suits your environment and family set-up.

It’s important to think long-term when adding a dog to your life and you need to think of training it straight away. Start with puppy school and then maintain ongoing training if you want a well behaved dog.

Your dog must also be walked every day and don’t forget the added expense of vet bills, food, new toys and bedding.

As a behavioural trainer, clients often tell me they expected a different dog based

on the research they had done on the breed.

The truth is any breed can be hard work if we do not do the right things by the dog. In any breed of dog, I always recommend going for the low to medium energy dog of the litter.

Naturally high energy dogs will demand more of your time and will present more challenges to your family. However, if you do choose a low to medium energy dog don’t be fooled into thinking it will stay that way. The human influence can change all that very quickly.

Getting a new puppy shouldn’t be about what it will do for the family – it should be about what the family can do for the puppy to fulfill its needs as a dog. If you are buying a dog because you think it’s cute or has a lot of energy, you are buying it for the wrong reasons. Puppies soon turn into adolescent dogs and can start acting up if its human pack isn’t getting it right.

Getting a puppy is a big deal and you should never buy with your heart, I understand this is hard when looking at cute little puppies but the amount of owners I’ve come across that want to get rid of a dog because it’s no longer cute is outrageous.

Genevieve Attard of Sunshine Coast Pet Groomers is still being asked to clip all breeds of long-haired dogs, from Maltese, poodles and cocker spaniels to groodles and everything in between!

“But we have also seen a lot of short-haired breeds coming in to be clipped, such as labradors, German shepherds and cattle dogs,” she said.

Wondering why you would get your shorthaired dog clipped?

“It’s amazing the amount of hair a Labrador, for example, can shed and a common complaint is the amount of hair dropped through the house and backyard,” Genevieve said.

“It also helps to keep your dog cool, as some of the coats are so thick. And it makes it easier to spot any skin irritations, such as hotspots, which can be very painful for your dog if left untreated.

It can also be a lifesaver, as far as detecting ticks.

“Clipping a short-haired dog doesn’t mean it has to be taken back all the way to the skin. We maintain enough hair on the coat to ensure your dog has protection from sunburn and still looks good.”

Africa – the best time to visit

There is no bad time to visit Africa but some times of the year are better than others, and these times can vary from one part of Africa to another.

“I wear black stretchy jeans and a flat shoe or boot”

For most of Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe & Zambia) the best time to visit is between June and early October. This is the dry, cool season. At this time of year the bush is not so thick and green, so the animals can be seen more easily and because there is little rain they tend to congregate near water sources, so your guides will know where they can be found.

In most of East Africa (Kenya & Tanzania) the landscape is more the open plains variety, so dense bush is not an issue. However, if possible avoid the two main rainy seasons April-June and November-December.

The animals are still there of course, but your game viewing may be restricted by flooded roads.

The best time to see East Africa’s great wildebeest migration in all its spectacular glory is August in the northern part of Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve.

This is when the animals will be crossing rivers in their hundreds of thousands.

Then in February you can find these same herds in the south of the Serengeti where they settle for a while to give birth to their calves and to feed on the lush grass of the plains.

Persimmons

As summer descends the downward slope towards autumn you can expect some delicious fruit and vegetables to be coming into season now.

At Noosa Farmers’ Markets on Sunday we spotted the glorious golden glow of persimmons on display.

Along with their flavour credentials, persimmons have double the dietary fibre of apples, are high in anti-oxidants and are an excellent source of Vitamin C and beta carotene.

Original persimmons have been grown in Australia for almost 150 years, most commonly as a decorative tree in domestic gardens, and are known for their large, heart-shaped silhouette and colour, which ranges from pale orange to deep red-orange.

In contrast, the sweet persimmon is round, with a diameter of around 10cm, and has a slightly flattened top. Introduced around 40 years ago, this variety now comprises around 90 per cent of production.

Approximately 2500 tonnes of persimmons are harvested Australia annually with

the bulk of fruit grown in Queensland.

Persimmons are very versatile in the kitchen and their unassuming sweetness marries brilliantly with flavours like smoked poultry, cured meats, cheese, nuts and bitter salad leaves. They also go very well in South-east Asian-style salads, as the ‘sweet’ element, together with hot, sour and salty. Below are some fun ways with persimmons: • Wrap proscuitto around wedges of Persimmon and serve as an exciting and attractive finger food • Persimmon chunks can be added to curry for fruity flavour • Include thin slices of Persimmon as a feature on your next cheese platter for striking look and flavour • Include Persimmons for a sweet and unique touch in fruit salads • For a special treat, try a Persimmon fruit crumble • Dip wedges of Persimmon into low fat yoghurt flavoured with honey and a little cinnamon as a healthy snack • Add slices of Persimmon on hot or cold cereal for a new take on breakfast

Cooking with Kim – at the library Author of international bestseller 4 Ingredients Kim McCosker will be appearing at Noosaville Library to promote her new wellness series of books.

Having sold over six million copies of her first book that she co-authored, Kim is back with a series of cookbooks with a twist.

For those food-buffs with a difference, Kim will be talking about her recipes that highlight good eating for gluten-free and lactose-free eaters, for diabetics and for those with allergies.

Noosaville Library Co-ordinator Nadia Bowtell is excited about having the famous author visit the library.

“It’ll be really interesting to hear Kim talk about her passions of food and family, as Kim McCosker well as the journey to her current success,” she said.

“She’s even offered to sign her books at the talk, so we’re very thankful for her generosity.”

Cool front heats up the action MAX PARNELL A cool front moving through Queensland made for a very different race meeting at Morgan Park, Warwick for the 14 members of Noosa Beach Classic Car Club who backed up for a second weekend in a row.

Bruce Anderson from Ringtail Creek drove his PRB clubman to a personal best, perhaps related to the relaxed trip up in his new tow vehicle, the third new vehicle displayed by members so far this season.

Damien Maher (Nissan Silvia), Paul Holter (Pontiac) and Shane Hill (Falcon 351) had an incredible tussle, the three cars of different specifications

but similar performance put on a good display for the crowd.

Less than two seconds separated them in the final run with the turbo four winning out

Steve Victor-Hogg in the 1600 Corolla performed very well in his class and was selected in the Qld team to battle it out with the NSW team.

New to Morgan Park was Kel Bankin driving the Bickley-developed rally Escort.

Encouraged by his brother Greg (Datsun 410) Kel gradually improved his times to a respectable level and is looking forward to his next run at Queensland Raceway and the next round of circuit sprints at Warwick in late May. The next outing for the Sunshine Coast crew is the much loved Gatton Sprints in mid-March where we hope to bring home another six trophies.

Sneak peak at 2014 motor show The Geneva Motor Show 2014 takes place from March 6-16 and is one of the biggest events on the motor industry calendar. As with the Detroit Motor Show earlier this month, Geneva will be an opportunity to see a number of cars for the first time as they make their public debuts at the show in Switzerland. These are just some of them.

JEEP The latest Jeep Cherokee will be on show in Geneva, now featuring a brand new 2.0-litre diesel engine. A powerful 3.2-litre V6 engine will top the engine range.

Jeep is also set to unveil a new small model at the show, and it’s expected to be called ‘Jeepster’. The American company is keen to grab a part of the compact SUV market occupied by cars like the Nissan Juke, Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur, and will try to offer something different to these rivals by producing a car that has genuine off-road ability and heritage.

MERCEDES The Mercedes S-Class coupe concept car was on show in Detroit, and Mercedes will launch the production version in Geneva. The car will use a 4.7-litre V8 petrol engine and is expected to cost around £75,000. The new Mercedes C-Class estate will also be on the Mercedes stand following the debut of the saloon in the US.

MAZDA A new Mazda2 model is expected in the next year and the Mazda Hazumi concept car, to be launched at the show, will give us a clear idea of what we can expect it to look like. Mazda will also unveil its new 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is likely to be offered as part of the new Mazda2 engine range.

HYUNDAI The Hyundai Intrado concept car will be shown to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. The crossover model is rumoured to use an innovative fuel-cell system and is expected to turn heads thanks to a radical new design direction. The new Hyundai Genesis – a luxury saloon model – was shown in

Intrepid 4WD owners and adventure surfers are expected to be out in force when the inaugural Jeep Waterman Challenge hits the surf at Double Island Point next week.

The ground-breaking winner-takeall $2500 invitational features eight of the best all-round surfers in the world, competing across four different disciplines in one day – longboard, shortboard, finless and body-surfing.

The Challenge can be held in the best conditions available between Thursday, March 6 and Saturday, March 8, but early swell computer models indicate that it will be held on Thursday, March 6, in clean, shoulder-high waves. As swell guidance can change dramatically, anyone considering driving up the beach to watch the action should check the Festival Facebook page after 5pm on Wednesday, March 5, when running date and times will be confirmed.

Local invitees have been in frantic training mode over the past week or so, with top seed Harrison Roach and Matt Cuddihy both seen body womping along the Sunshine strip, and Matt also whacking a few lips at North Sunshine on his fish shortboard. Meanwhile, Nic Jones got in his shortboard preparation at the Hurley Australian Open at Manly, surfing through the trials to the main event.

Former world longboard champion Josh Constable, on the other hand, is conserving his energy. “I won an Australian stand up paddle title when I hadn’t been on a stand up board for a year,� he said. “So I think there’s a bit to be said about being really fresh

when you ride equipment that’s not what you ride every day.�

Two-times world longboard champion Taylor Jensen (USA) has been in training at Angourie on the NSW north coast, and by all accounts, ripping on all three forms of board. And on the Sapphire Coast, former world champ Harley Ingleby and current Australian champ Jared Neal have been getting in plenty of early morning training sessions in solid waves. The only mystery bag is Bryce Young, super-talented son of the legendary Nat Young, who has been hiding away on a north coast farm, shaping new boards for the Challenge.

Jeep Waterman Challenge organisers say they welcome spectators to come to the event, but remind all that they must purchase beach use permits, and should be aware that they need to be self-sufficient, as food and drinks will be provided only for competitors and officials.

TEAMS CHALLENGE ATTRACTS THE WEIRD AND WONDERFUL They came with a crazy rush, forcing us to extend the ever-popular Classic Malibu Teams Challenge, and now it’s full again with a waitlist! Clubs, both local and international, are well represented, with host club Noosa Malibu Club fielding two teams, former champions Alex Headland just squeaking into one of the last spots, while Windansea Club from California, and defending champs Deus Bali are both fielding very strong line-ups.

With three goals to long-term Noosa talent Dan Upton and a double to new recruit Alex Barlow the premier division squad is looking forward to the next round, which gets them one step closer to playing off for the right to represent the Coast in the state-wide competition. Not to be outdone the reserve grade side played a friendly against NYU with Ben Amson putting out the challenge to strikers throughout the club by scoring 6 of his side’s 10 goals.

The Premier team has seen old heads - such as evergreen back Michael Williams (playing his 20th season at this level) - combine well with young talent such as Chris Jancevski and Nathan Brown the keeper. Chris, who has come up through the junior ranks at Noosa, has returned after playing U18s for the Fire last season and has shown some blistering speed on the ball. Nathan, the other 18-yearold, has shown good form already this season with an excellent ‘reflex’ save that kept the score level in the game against the Fire.

The Club is going to field a record number of girls and women’s teams this year and there is still room for a few more from U9s up to seniors.

Mother, daughter blitz the field JOY RINGROSE Paula Hamood and her daughter Olivia were the big winners at the Sunshine Coast Show Jumping Club’s annual Grand Weekend of Showjumping, held at the Nambour Showgrounds. Over 300 horses and their riders competed in events at all levels, but it was the weekend’s two Grand Prix competitions that drew the biggest crowds and provided the most spectacular jumping.

In third place was Toowoomba’s Tom Sedger on Get What You Want, in the scorching time of 35.6 secs. Unfortunately, Tom had a rail down in the second round. Last year’s winner, Sheridan Manuel, from Windsor, NSW, was fourth on his paint horse Romano, just one second behind Tom. Paula’s daughter Olivia was fifth on Eternal Flame, in 37.34 secs. She was inside the winning time but with one rail down.

Olivia also picked up fourth place on Avion, in the time of 61.21 seconds. Sheridan Manuel came in fifth.

With jump heights of up to 1.55m, these two classes are of Olympic standard. Attracting World Cup riders from all over Qld and NSW, including the runner-up in the 2013 Pacific League World Cup Qualifier series, Cooroy’s Billy Raymont, the competition was electric.

Saturday night’s Grand Prix proved to be one for the women, who took out three of the first five places, in spite of the fact that the vast majority of competitors were male.

Paula Hamood on Nero showed the opposition a clean pair of heels with two clear rounds, the second round in the time of 38.36 secs, four seconds ahead of Gemma Creighton on Tycoon Warlord. Gemma is the daughter of successful Olympian Guy Creighton, who designed the Olivia Hamood on Eternal Flame

Peter Chiricosta from Kyokushin Karate Noosa said learning self-defence is the ideal way to boost self-confidence and ward off a possible attack.

“When you walk with confidence you seem to repel attacks,” Peter said. “When you have the skills to defend yourself, bullies seem to sense it and you’re no longer seen as a target.”

Peter teaches Kyokushin karate in Noosaville, which is a contact style that aims to gradually “desensitise the nervous system’s fight or flight response” so students can

“react in a more positive and defensive way” when faced with a confrontational situation.

The classes are suitable for anyone aged 12 and over, with self-defence being just as important for high school kids, Peter said.

“Learning the skills will increase their confidence, teach them how to stand-up for themselves and ward off bullies,” he said.

“Bullies are cowards and once you’re confident enough to stand-up to them, they’ll leave Peter Chiricosta you alone.”

Cricket mates aiming high

Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club youngsters Cody Pyne, Ben Potter and Luke Smalley have all been selected to represent the Coast in the schoolboy cricket team to complete at the state titles in March.

MICHAEL SOBEY It was a long time coming but our 1st grade team finally broke through for a victory.

Need 4 more wickets to secure the win the tail managed to add another 60 runs but with Mike Thomson picking up another 3 (for a total of 6/42 for the innings) they were never in the hunt and we ended up with a 99 run 1st innings lead. Batting the second time a declaration was made at 7/166 with Jarrod Officer (36), Chris Wright (31 no) and Bob McGhee (25 no) the main contributors. With 22 overs to secure an outright victory it wasn’t to be just picking up 3 wickets with a brilliant run out from young sub fielder Alexander Bennett.

2nd grade faced a weather-interrupted day at Caloundra. The host’s top order made a solid start before Zach Lange made the breakthrough at 1/52. The ball deteriorated in the wet and resembled a cake of soap but unfortunately requests for it to change were refused. The bowlers then had to battle really hard and Jimmy Anderson (3/47) got us back in the game.

Michael Bidois once again showed his star potential with a sensational 5/37 but it wasn’t enough to prevent Caloundra from just sneaking past the total before being bowled out just 5 runs in front. It was a top effort but had some catches been taken it may well have been the difference.

At Maroochydore 3rd grade started disastrously with the 3rd wicket falling in the 2nd over of the day to have us 3/3. And we never really recovered being bowled out for a paltry 54.

Not surprisingly the hosts enforced the follow on. Again we were in world of hurt at 2/2 with both openers in the shed after just a few overs.

But resistance was shown with a 109 run stand between Phil Drescher (64) and Troy Dukes (57) who notched up a half century in his first ever game of competitive senior cricket. The day finished slightly early as the weather came in with the Thunder on 4/154 avoiding an outright defeat.

5th grade were at home in a crunch match against fellow finalist contenders Buderim.

Unfortunately a number of catches weren’t held which allowed the Buderim team to chase down the 174 run total and then post a 60 run lead. Best Bowlers were Wayne Moore with 3 wickets and John Norden and and Morgan Horn with 2 each. This will make it a tough ask against ladder leader Palmwoods in the last round to secure a finals spot.

With an eye on some practice for the upcoming finals Ritchie then elected to bat again and at stumps Cooroy were 8-145 with Kennedy again amongst the runs with a rapid fire 55. Next week sees the final round of the home and away matches with the Cougars travelling to Yandina to take on the top side.

Cooroy Senior C Grade won a hard fought contest away at Yandina on Saturday. Set a total of 163 for 1st innings honours, Cooroy resumed under cloudy skies at 3 for 91 on day 2. Yandina bowled very well to restrict Cooroy with some tight swing bowling. But, thanks mainly to an excellent 85 run partnership between Andy Bowden and Rob Plant, Cooroy fought hard and were eventually bowled out for 193 claiming first innings points. This victory seals a thoroughly deserved semi-final place for the C Grade boys.

Hamilton, who was a last minute call up to replace regular skipper Mick Carman who pulled out to be present at the birth of his new daughter Elle (congratulations to Mick and Kristin), showed class and composure beyond his years as he compiled his neat half century off only 60 balls with 6 well struck boundaries.

Mackee made his fluent 70 at a run a ball and found the fence 11 times.

Following Cooroy’s declaration, Maleny struggled on the second day and were cleaned up for only 82. Star Cougar bowler Matt Campbell claimed 7 wickets for only 43 runs in a personal best performance. His pace and movement were too much for the visiting batsmen who had no answer to the big quick.

Cody’s dad, Shaun, told Noosa Today that a squad of just 12 was chosen from more than 80 boys trialled from Redcliffe to Pomona.

“All three boys are locals and play in the same team at Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club.

It’s an amazing effort as most zones may get one or two boys selected,” Shaun said.

All three boys represented Sunshine Coast Club Cricket at a state carnival in Brisbane in January, finishing second overall after the

five days.

“Cody and Ben are also outstanding young soccer players,” Shaun said. “Both are now playing representative soccer each week in the Sunshine Coast Fire Football Club.

They no longer play club soccer and play in a Qld junior National Premier League competition, which has teams from Brisbane, Gold Coast and Toowoomba.

“At those trials over 80 kids trialled over a two-week period for 14 spots.”

Last September/October Cody scored a dream trip, travelling to the UK and Spain to train at Chelsea, Liverpool, Fulham, Manchester City, Barcelona and Espanol. He also played five games in a mainly U14/15 age team and he was only 11.

Dolphins dive in for success Cooroy Dolphins Swim Club athletes scooped the medals at the 2014 Cooloola Crocs Swimming Carnival at Tin Can Bay at the weekend.

With the club contesting over 100 events, Cooroy coach Adrienne Wilkins said the performance of the swimmers was fantastic.

“We had swimmers achieve at least one personal best time, with most swimming PBs in all their

events,” she said.

“The depth in the relays was very strong and the club is showing how well our swimmers develop as they progress through the squads.”

Standing on Coolum Beach on Sunday watching the swim section of the Kellogg’s NutriGrain Ironwoman series was indeed a pleasure. Coolum provided tough challenging surf, ideal for a major championship event.

It featured a wide break, inshore gutter and an outer bank. And out the back it was a big chop. So tough were the conditions that both men and women, to combat the sweep, ran south along the beach for some 150 meters before entering the surf.

I joined the thousands who clapped and cheered as Harriet Brown led the ladies out around the cans and back in through a wide turbulent break, in

some cases giving a display of body surfing that was all class.

Noosa Life Member Scott Wilson commented: “The girls are great.

They have certainly come a long way in lifesaving. Did we ever think we would see anything like this?”

My memory slipped back to 1980, to the January meeting of the Sunshine Coast Board of Examiners at Alexander Headlands SLSC. The meeting was in absolute uproar. The chairman had just announced that the unthinkable was going to happen. Women were to be admitted into the movement and they would be eligible for the bronze medallion, meaning they would be doing patrols and eventually competing.

All the theories and reasons why this should not be allowed, were, over the years disproven and the rest is now history. Now all of us veterans take great pride in their achievements.

Another win for the girls last weekend went to first aid coach Lenore Grice.

At the recent state championships Lenore, a Life Member of Noosa, coached

her teams to a total of four gold medals, three silver and a bronze. Already considered to be the most successful first aid coach in Australian surf lifesaving history, Lenore is acknowledged as a legend in the ranks of coaching.

Away from the world of competition our three local clubs have eight women holding the all-important job of patrol captains and seven working as patrol vice captains. And for the ultimate in club awards, life membership, Noosa has Lenore, Sunshine has Jane Peeters and Janis Evans, Peregian has Jill Woolcock, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

WAVE WARRIORS On Saturday Noosa hosted the final round of the the Medibank Wave Warriors National Tour - a carnival run for nippers, in conjunction with the Iron Man Series. Champion Ironman Zane Holmes and Wave Warriors aged eight to 14 years from clubs across Australia hit the beach to develop their skills as future lifesavers and competitors.
