Cops blitz roads and Keilor Downs police stations, focusing on low speed enforcement. Operation Cannonball targets the eight highest areas for road trauma in Brimbank. To date the results have seen 249 drivers intercepted with a total of 288 offences recorded including 114 speeding offences, 31 seatbelt offences and 54 mobile phone offences. “The operation remains ongoing and the Brimbank Highway Patrol will continue to target these offences which are main drivers behind our road trauma,” Insp Stevens said. Meanwhile, 56 drivers on Ballarat Rd, Western Highway, Melton High-

way, Station Rd, Main Rd and Taylors Rd have been nabbed using their mobile phones as part of Operation Buckley. “Distraction of drivers from the use of mobile phones and seat belts are two of the main causes of death and serious injury on our roads. “We really need our community to appreciate that using a mobile phone and speeding while driving is dangerous and often results in serious collisions. The impact of being involved in a collision where someone is injured or killed is life changing.” Insp Stevens said the role of police in conjunction with the TAC is to make the roads a safer place.

DANGEROUS and reckless drivers in Melton and Brimbank have been the focus of a number of major road operations conducted by police in the last three months. Melton and Brimbank Highway Patrol units have led at least three operations since November 2013 and handed out in excess of 800 offences to irresponsible drivers across both municipalities. The TAC-funded operations have targeted speeding drivers, mobile and seatbelt offences and careless drivers. Operation Ninja in Melton began in November last year and concentrated on

11 roads identified as having the highest road trauma in Melton and Caroline Springs. Inspector Simon Stevens said results so far had seen a total of 319 drivers intercepted and 392 offences including one driver in excess of .05, seven disqualified drivers, 29 unlicensed, 174 speeding offences, 40 seatbelt offences, 27 unregistered vehicles and 17 mobile phone. Insp Stevens said the operation will be ongoing and Melton Highway Patrol will continue to target any offenders. A further two TAC-funded operations are being conducted by members of the Brimbank Highway Patrol and Sunshine

CAROLINE SPRINGS resident Mehmet Cileli has created an extraordinary invention to help with an ordinary household task. Mr Cileli, who his friends jokingly call Mr Gadget, has put together a system which helps automatically bring the garbage bins in and out each week. He said initially it was something his family really needed but now they enjoyed the luxury of the creation. “Every Monday night the bins come out and as soon as they pick up the second bin and put it back, they come back in,” he said.

When first moving into his home he discovered the design of the garden, with the layout of stones, was not ideal for moving the bins. And to keep the bins in the garage became a growing hassle because of the family cars and occasionally forgetting. “I had to do something because some mornings we would forget to take them out and I would run out in my pyjamas when I would hear the truck,” Mr Cileli said. The bins sit on an aluminium platform which moves with the help of a solar powered battery system and can also be controlled by remote controls,

radio frequency and Bluetooth. This is the new version of the prototype Mr Cileli created nine years ago, and has been running for the last two months. It also has a warning alert, a voice recording of Mr Cileli’s daughter, which echoes in the family home to let them know the bins were on the way out - one last chance to empty the household bins, Mr Cileli said. “It was hard to put it all together and bring it to this point,” he said. “But it was a pleasure to create something like this, to think about it and make it - I really enjoyed doing it.”

YOUNG drivers across Melton and Moorabool are being given a helping hand by dedicated volunteers thanks to the area’s successful L2P program. This month the program celebrated its 60th licence - more than any other program in Melbourne’s West. Katherine Price said she decided to volunteer as a mentor to give young people the opportunity she didn’t have when she was learning to drive. The Melton resident said while she was nervous the first time she took a learner driver out, it was now an important part of her week and she has developed a special bond with the youngsters she has met. “I think people need to remember what it was like learning to drive, the program gives you the chance to help young people and hopefully reduce the road toll,” Ms Price told Star. She said it was always a very proud moment when one of her drivers gained their licence. “I really recommend that other people do it you have a lot of fun too.” The program, sponsored by Melton City Council and Moorabool Shire Council in partnership with VicRoads, was first launched in Melton in 2009 and allows young adults aged between 16 and 20 years to gain access to a driving mentor in order in acquire their 120 hours of driving experience. It is also supported by Melton Toyota, Harrison Hyundai, Rotary Bacchus Marsh and Bacchus Marsh Workwear and Safety.

New ferry service is vital By XAVIER SMERDON FORMER Victorian Premier Steve Bracks has called for a start to planning for a ferry service to run out of the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Mr Bracks was in Werribee last week to address 130 members of the Committee for Wyndham, discussing the challenges and opportunities facing the West. Mr Bracks said with the growing number of people moving to the West, a ferry service would be vital. “It has to happen really with the population growth we’re talking about,” Mr Bracks said. “I mentioned before about the doubling of the population in this region.

That will build a demand which can’t be met by just road and rail, and having an integrated ferry system will be built around that in the future.” Mr Bracks said planning for the ferry service should start as soon as possible. “I think it’s just going to come when the population demand is big enough and therefore it’s going to drive the economics of it,” he said. “But we should start planning for it now because it is going to be vital in the future. “I was very impressed with what happened in the city of Brisbane on the Brisbane River with the ferry service. “It was lampooned as something that would be a white elephant. It’s now extraordinarily popular and it’s

probably the best way to get around Brisbane. “It could happen here as well and we need to take a risk on that at some point.” The idea of a ferry service running from the Western Suburbs has been floated by the Liberal Government for several years but it has been consistently knocked back by Labor politicians. Mr Bracks also supported the possible creation of a committee for the West which would advocate for investment and change in the region. In June last year Star reported that the Committee for Wyndham was positioning itself to become a West-wide advocacy group.

Lives being put at risk, says MP

Drug labs raided By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO MELTON Police raided and detected 11 clandestine drug laboratories in 2013 according to Victoria Police statistics. The shocking figures come in the wake of Star’s report last week which revealed the highly addictive

and harmful drug ice was being used by an increasing number of teenagers throughout the municipality. The data shows four labs were detected in Melton, two in Melton South, and one each in Kurunjang, Caroline Springs, Diggers Rest, Hillside and Taylors Hill. Last week Melton Police Inspec-

tor Stephen Mutton told Star police were targeting drug manufacturers and dealers to stamp out the growing problem. Meanwhile, a 28-year-old Melton man was arrested earlier this month in relation to burglaries committed in Melton on 22 and 30 January. He has been remanded in

custody to appear at Sunshine Court on a later date. A 14-year-old Melton boy was arrested on 7 February in relation to a series of separate offences committed at Melton in late 2013. He has been charged with burglary and theft, theft of a motor car and theft from a motor car.

Bush fight’s on to save ancient redgums By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO AN AVID environmentalist has vowed to take his fight to see ancient redgums remain in Melton to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Daryl Akers told Star he was disappointed to learn a proposal to clear a remnant redgum-grey box woodland beside a small reserve at Ryans Creek will now be heard at VCAT this Friday. Mr Akers said the proposal, which includes the removal of native vegetation, is “entirely inappropriate”. “The remnant woodland is but a tiny proportion of the land subject to

this proposal,” Mr Akers said. “The vast bulk of the land at this site is of little environmental significance. The remainder of the site could be developed with little or no environmental harm.” It is proposed that the site will be used to develop a bulky goods/ homemaker centre comprising of 51 tenancies delivered in three stages. The proposal includes 52,355 square metres floor area and 1520 car spaces. New access points are proposed from Melton Highway and Federation Drive. Mr Akers said the small remnant woodland is worthy of protection, with its many ancient old growth

trees occupying only a small corner of the land which could easily be separated from the remainder of the development. He said while Melton is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Australia, there had to be a balance in creating infrastructure and keeping significant environmental aspects of the area. “Melton has gained a reputation for environmentally responsible development, to the envy of other local municipalities. This has been demonstrated by Melton being awarded many Sustainable Cities awards over the last couple of years. “The western region is becoming more attractive as a place for people to live.

“More and more people will want to live in and around Melton. We should be encouraging people to think Melton is a better place to live.” Melton City Council’s Planning Services Manager Bob Baggio said the council has not formally refused the application. However, it will not be supporting the application when it is heard at VCAT. Mr Baggio said the council is concerned about the proposed removal of the existing trees, given their environmental significance and opportunities to integrate the trees into any future redevelopment of the site.

MELTON MP Don Nardella is calling on the State Government to make drastic improvements to Victoria’s ailing ambulance service. Mr Nardella last week claimed ambulances were “taking too long to arrive, patients are crammed into hospital corridors and people’s lives are in danger”. His claims came only days after the Australian Medical Association’s Public Hospital Report Card 2014 was released. Its figures show Victorian hospitals failed in all the performance targets set under the National Health Reform Agreement including improvement in emergency department waiting times and improvement in elective surgery waiting times. Mr Nardella said the AMA report demonstrated that Victoria’s hospitals are in crisis. “Victoria used to lead the way, but now we’re the only state to fail on every measure,” Mr Nardella said. “While hospitals do not have the capacity to meet demand, they will struggle to meet performance targets. “Insufficient capacity to meet demand means patient safety and quality care are at risk.” Since October 2012, there have been three deaths in Melton where patients have waited longer than 15 minutes for an ambulance. Lilliana Mizzi, 78, waited four hours for an ambulance after having a stroke. Brodie Wilson, 18, waited 27 minutes for paramedics to come from Sunbury after having an asthma attack. And Matthew Gibbs, 23, waited 16 minutes after having a cardiac arrest at a Melton recreation centre on 8 October. The most recent figures show the average waiting time for life-threatening cases in Melton is 14.13 minutes. Hillside’s average waiting time of 15.38 minutes is well above the state benchmark of 15 minutes for ‘‘code one’’ cases. –Natalie Gallenti-Brekalo

MELTON Waves Leisure Centre has become the home of a colourful, text-based artwork, entitled Rain Stories, by Wollongong-based artist, Greer Taylor. Late last year, Melton City Council put a call out for residents to contribute stories about rain to be used as part of the artwork. As well as community contributions the artwork also features rain facts, text and poetry contributions. The stories have been woven into a

sequence before being cut out into four wall panels. Mayor Bob Turner said the installation of the public artwork was the final stage of the Melton Waves refurbishment. “Melton Waves is looking great after its recent facelift and this piece of artwork is set to become an iconic and eye-catching piece on the back wall of the Waves pool,” Cr Turner said. “Council is proud to support public art wherever possible and projects like this demonstrate our pro-active and inno-

vative approach to supporting public art in the community.” Ms Taylor said the work would contribute to creating an environment around the Wave pool that connects the pool to the wider world. Refurbishment works to Melton Waves included internal and external painting, new carpet from foyer to gym, upgrade to partition screens in family change rooms and re-tiling the shower area in the family change area and installation of new gym equipment.

Lucky, plucky Aiden beats the odds Doc stabbing By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO WHEN Sarah Antonopoulos went into labour at only 20 weeks gestation she and her husband Adrian knew there was cause for alarm. The Caroline Springs couple were expecting their first child and had already been told that Sarah had an incompetent cervix which would mean she could deliver their baby early. Doctors were able to hold off labour for another month, however at 24 weeks Sarah gave birth to tiny Aiden who weighed only 723 grams and fit into the palm of his father’s hand. Sarah is still emotional when she recalls that day in 2011. “It was pretty devastating at the time,” she told Star. “It was our first pregnancy and there was no family history of premature births.” The anxious couple was told their precious baby’s chance at life was slim with only a 50 per cent chance of survival. “There was so much running through my head ... it was heartbreaking, why is it happening to us? “I was in denial, he was covered in wires, it was heartbreaking to look at him and I blamed myself ... it was really hard.” The next 147 days were a nightmare for the new parents who were forced to leave their baby boy in hospital and return to sit by his side each and every day. “You see everyone going home with flowers and balloons, we struggled really badly going home without our baby.” After five gruelling months little Aiden came home and, after several operations and constant monitoring, his life has begun to resemble that of a normal toddler. “We’re taking baby steps, he’s turning into a real little man and to think where he has come from is just amazing.”

A 48-YEAR-OLD North Sunshine man has been charged with attempted murder over last week’s stabbing at Footscray’s Western Hospital. Kareem Al-Salami was formally charged at the Footscray police station and was taken to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a remand hearing, where he did not seek bail. The charge comes after the stabbing of 43-year-old neurosurgeon Dr Michael Wong, who walked into the Western Hospital foyer around 8.30am on Tuesday 18 February to start his shift when he was stabbed multiple times over various parts of his body, causing life-threatening injuries. A number of people were in the foyer at the time of the attack and quickly came to the aid of Dr Wong, taking him away for life-saving surgery. Footscray police were called to the hospital just before 8.30am, where the offender immediately dropped the knife and surrendered. Inspector Tony Long said it was believed the offender may have pointed the knife at other people, but no-one else was injured. Dr Wong is a full time neurosurgeon and spinal surgeon at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Head of Neurosurgery at the Western Hospital. He also consults and operates at Epworth Eastern Hospital and John Fawkner Hospital. He looks after patients with intracranial problems, spinal problems and peripheral nerves disorder and has a special interest in Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery.

Western Health acting CEO Russell Harrison said these kinds of attacks against hospital staff were “significantly rare”.

The big US import joins a long list of new arrivals that already includes Matthew Jukes, Matthew Hedger, Joel Bellman and Daniel Kraljevic - who have all been confirmed as starters for Melton for the upcoming season. Incoming Thoroughbreds coach Mick Downie is well aware that a host of formidable new recruits will come with greater expectations, but the expected standard for the year has already been set by the coach himself, three weeks out from the season’s tip-off. “We’ve recruited quite successfully and got ourselves some good experience and some really good young talent that has experienced playing basketball at a higher level,” Downie said. “Quite honestly, I’ve put a bit of pressure on myself with the recruiting that I’ve done but I’m relishing that and I would
