FORMER Mayor Tony Briffa has resigned from local politics, citing family reasons.

The world’s first intersex councillor resigned on Friday after six years in office.

Cr Briffa was first elected to the council in the Cherry Lake Ward in 2008. Since then there have been terms as Mayor (2011-2012) and Deputy Mayor (2009-2011).

Cr Briffa submitted the resignation to the council just before midday on Friday, citing a desire to focus on family and spend more time on human rights work here and abroad.

Cr Briffa denied speculation the resignation followed the establishment of another councillor conduct panel, saying: “I have not been summoned to appear before a councillor conduct panel. Any such rumour is nonsense.

“The last time a councillor raised a code of conduct complaint against me they withdrew it before the matter had the chance to be heard.

“I have no further comment to make other than I am looking forward to life after council.”

A spokesperson from the Municipal Association of Victoria told Star on Friday that “a panel was requested and established against Tony Briffa in recent weeks”.

In a statement posted on Cr Briffa’s official website, Cr Briffa said: “I always focused on being a community representative and advocate first and foremost.

“The decision to resign hasn’t been easy, and I have considered and discussed this with my family, friends and various community leaders for some months now.

“There will probably never be a good time to leave the council, but after getting married last year I would like to spend more time with my family.

“I would also like time to focus on my human rights work in Australia and abroad, and restarting the career I put on hold while devoting all my energy to the council and local community.”

In his resignation statement Cr Briffa highlighted achievements involving the environment, community facilities and industrial air pollution.

Cr Briffa was involved in a longrunning dispute with a fellow councillor and was forced to apologise to a former Mobil worker after fighting serious misconduct charges in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

The panel found the then Deputy Mayor breached the councillors’ code of conduct and ordered him to attend 12 months’ counselling and apologise to the employee.

NEWPORT Lakes Primary School is among four schools across Victoria to receive new $4.8 million double-storey relocatable buildings.

Minister for Education Martin Dixon announced the four schools earmarked to receive new double-storey relocatables last week.

Five new relocatables will allow schools on smaller sites to make the most of their grounds and meet growing enrolments.

Each relocatable will have four classrooms each and cost a total of almost $4.8 million to manufacture and install.

The buildings aim to address fluctuating enrolments in primary and secondary schools.

The double-storey buildings have been designed with features including, improved floor, wall and roof thermal insulation; double-glazed windows to reduce heat loss; building management and mobile storage units to allow various teaching layouts.

The ultra-modern laboratories include an island demonstration space to allow for teaching in an inclusive arena-style. They are due to be delivered in the second half of the year.

Recognition for young scientist

By NICOLE VALICEK AN innovative young scientist has been recognised for the dedication to her work with a nomination in the Victorian Young Achiever Award.

Altona Meadows resident Lauren Cornall has been nominated in the BASF Science and Technology Award category.

The 26-year-old said she was excited to be nominated.

“To have awards like this is really good encouragement for people to keep striving to do their best,” she said.

“It’s nice to have your hard work recognised and it’s a really nice and exciting feeling to be nominated.”

Lauren grew up in rural Victoria in a farming family and made the move to Melbourne to study.

Recently she was awarded a scholarship from the National Heart Foundation of Australia and the Vice Chancellors Award to undertake her PhD at Victoria University.

Lauren is researching new pharmaceutical targets for treating obesity, diabetes and heart disease with her goal being to reduce morbidity surrounding these conditions.

“I really like the challenge it keeps you constantly thinking.”

Toyota’s big blow

By NICOLE VALICEK AN estimated 2500 manufacturing workers will be left jobless at Toyota’s Altona plant but Hobsons Bay is still an important industrial and manufacturing hub, according to mayor Sandra Wilson.

Toyota Australia president and chief executive Max Yasuda made the announcement to employees that it will no longer make cars in Melbourne beyond 2017 last Monday afternoon.

The world’s biggest car maker will stop building cars in Australia and become solely a vehicle importer for the first time since 1968.

The news will also leave up to

50,000 workers in supporting industries out of a job, in addition to the 2500 at Toyota.

The media shy boss said he was “devastated” by the news and blamed its closure on too many factors beyond their control that made it unviable to build cars in Australia.

Toyota lost an estimated $1.75 billion over the past 10 years - despite an injection of about $1.2 billion in taxpayer dollars over that period.

“Although the company has made profits in the past, our manufacturing operations have continued to be loss making despite our best efforts,” Mr Yasuda said.

or Sandra Wilson said the decision was a blow for manufacturing not only in Hobsons Bay, but for the western region, the state and at a national level.

“The major impact of this decision will be felt at the Altona plant, which has been an integral part of our community for many years,” Cr Wilson said.

Cr Wilson said the council is committed to the long-term economic success of the municipality, and is developing an economic development strategy to plan for the long-term success.

“There are many opportunities for new investment, diversification and the creation of new jobs.”

Cr Wilson said Hobsons Bay was still an important industrial and manufacturing hub.

“We are working with other western region councils, and as part of LeadWest, to maximise economic investment for the region,” she said.

The council will be talking with other levels of government about future economic and employment opportunities in the municipality.

“Council just endorsed an Advocacy Strategy which provides a framework for the council to advocate on key community concerns, which include economic development and employment.”

Last week Mr Finn told Parliament the ground and its facilities, located at Altona North, was “out-dated” and “desperately in need of a major upgrade”.

The reserve is the home of the Western Jets Football Club in the TAC Cup, as well as the Williamstown Superules Football Club and also the Altona North Cricket Club.

Carl’s big comeback

FORMER mayor Carl Marsich was elected the new councillor for Wetlands Ward last week, replacing outgoing councillor Luba Grigorovitch.

Cr Marsich was sworn in at an official ceremony last Friday at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre.

He was first elected in 1996 following the amalgamation of Cities of Altona and Williamstown, making him one of the first councillors of the new Hobsons Bay City Council.

Cr Marsich served on the council until 2008 and was twice Mayor of Hobsons Bay in 2000 and 2005.

During his Mayoral term in 20052006, Cr Marsich initiated the Hobsons Bay Community Fund as part of

his mayoral program. The fund aims to strengthen social justice initiatives and to provide an additional source of funding opportunities for the Hobsons Bay community.

Cr Marsich was re-elected via a countback by the Victorian Electoral Commission following the resignation of Councillor Luba Grigorovitch.

Accepting the new position at the official ceremony, Cr Marsich said he felt proud to have the opportunity to serve the Hobsons Bay community.

“It is quite humbling to be given the chance to represent my community again and I feel proud to be here today as the new councillor for Wetlands Ward,” he said.

“Council is about working together as a team for the betterment of the commu-

nity and I look forward to working with my fellow councillors over the coming years.”

“Through collaboration and partnership, we can ensure Hobsons Bay continues to move in a positive direction.”

TIP Top Butchers in Laverton North has unveiled one of Melbourne’s largest solar systems.

Last Thursday the business unveiled the solar installation that is one of the largest rooftop solar arrays in Australia.

Installed over eight weeks, the final system was switched on by the company’s joint CEOs, Paul De Bortoli and Carlo De Bortoli on 4 December, 2013.

It was officially launched by Minister for Environment Ryan

Smith in front of excited Tip Top butchers staff last Thursday. The system will produce enough solar electricity to power 50 residential homes for decades to come.

The project included replacement of factory lighting with the latest in LED technology and will offset over 515 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. This is the equivalent of taking 130 cars off the road each year.

It is expected the solar system will slash electricity bills at

the Tip Top Butchers facility by close to a third.

Tip Top Butchers CEO Paul De Bortoli said they are proud to invest in this large scale Melbourne solar power project.

“We are making an important contribution to de-carbonising our economy, while at the same time meeting the challenges of rising energy costs,” he said. “We are proud to be leading the way”.

Permit trial starts

By NICOLE VALICEK HOBSONS Bay City Council has introduced a new permit zone trial for local residents at Laverton Railway Station to ease crippling congestion.

With parking reaching unprecedented levels at the station residents living in Seabrook, Altona Meadows and Laverton can now apply for a permit in advance of the trial beginning in late February.

According to the council, the introduction of the 45-space permit zone follows resident concerns about the parking at the station.

Deputy Mayor Colleen Gates said this was “the first step towards restoring the amenity of the area, and improving the safety of the local residents,

pedestrians and commuter traffic.

“The introduction of the 45-space permit zone follows a number of residents raising concerns about the difficulty of finding available parking at the station.”

The car park has about 1000 spaces for commuters using the station, but it is often at capacity by the morning peak.

Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said an additional safety issue for residents relates to the overflow of parking at the former Laverton Primary School site, which has “become unsightly”.

The permit zoned area will run along the north side of Railway Avenue from Grace St to the Princes Freeway overpass.

Once the permit signs are displayed in late February, council officers will start issuing fines for anyone parking illegally in the zone.

Meanwhile a petition with 74 signatures was tabled to the Legislative Assembly of Victoria last week calling for the installation of automated safety barriers at North Williamstown railway station.

In particular, the petition noted that the crossing was located near to three local schools and there was a high volume of foot traffic through the crossing.

Hobsons Bay residents can apply for permits using the Greenlight permit management system on the council’s website.

Stitches in time for lives

By NICOLE VALICEK A SEWING project that started with the purchase of fabric has helped to change the lives of women in a poverty stricken African community.

The Bwindi Sewing Project started when Altona resident Tricia Salau travelled to the village of Bwindi in Uganda, East Africa three years ago. Tricia purchased some African fabric and told the buyer she would use it to make quilts.

The Bwindi villager asked Tricia to send photos of the finished products and from these humble beginnings the start of the project was born.

In August 2012 three women from the Louis Joel Centre in Altona including Jill Bilston, Kim Reilly and Ms Salau travelled to Bwindi to establish the project and worked with the women from the Ride 4 A Woman co-operative.

“Ride 4 Woman has a membership of 300 of which 100 are widows, 150 are HIV positive and the remaining 50 are living in extreme poverty,” Ms Salau said.

The women from the centre raised the necessary funds to buy equipment including treadle sewing machines, fabric and general sewing equipment.

“Most of the woman had never sewn so we had to start from scratch ... when we got back (last year) the skills had improved so much that their sewing was incredible,” she said.

The women have learnt to make a variety of quality clothing and items which are being sold at The Ride 4 Woman shop, the community centre and lodges.

“The wage is $2.50 a day which doesn’t sound much but there it is so they can buy food and educate their kids. That’s allowing them to do that.”

In July all three ladies will return to Uganda to continue with the program.

This year they want to raise funds to build a volunteer/women’s refuge accommodation and new sewing equipment.

MYA WAH is a member of the Karen community living in Laverton who has enjoyed volunteering in the community for the past two years.

Mya is part of the largest group of new arrivals to the municipality who have resettled from Burma (Myanmar), mainly in the Laverton area.

Mya immigrated to Australia from a refugee camp with his family in 2008 and has had to adapt to a new country.

A new project by Volunteer West into the participation of Karen community members in the West has found new ways to engage the local members and increase volunteer participation.

Like many new immigrants, lack of English skills and the isolation that can bring are some of the obstacles to volunteering.

Mya said started volunteering after a back injury that required two surgeries prevented him from looking for paid work.

He volunteers for the Williamstown Soccer Club each week, helping younger members get to training and helps fund-raising for the club and at the Wyndham Community Centre. “I enjoy I can help the peo-

The Volunteer West report discovered that event-based volunteering is one way to support Karen people in volunteering roles, such as Clean Up Australia Day. Creating more opportunities to volunteer like this is a key feature of the research.

One recommendation of the report was to create more projects which benefit the community as well as provide volunteer opportunities for people.

Mya said volunteering was very important to him but he looks forward to returning to the workforce to support his family.

HOBSONS Bay City Council will review and update its Electronic Gaming Machines (EGMs) Policy Statement.

In 2008 Hobsons Bay City Council adopted an EGMs policy statement which sets out the council’s commitment to minimise the impact of gaming machines on our community.

Since that time much has changed in the gaming and gambling environment including legislative changes affecting the operation of EGMs. Other improvements include further research and increased awareness of the impacts of gambling on the health wellbeing of the community, particularly for problem gamblers.

Gambling on EGMs is a legal activity in Victoria and councils are constrained in their capacity to control an increase in their numbers.

A cap on the maximum number of EGMs in some municipalities, including Hobsons Bay, is intended to manage their impact on vulnerable groups.

Her music’s a gift

By YASEMIN TALAT MUSIC has always been a central part of Laurel Parkinson’s life and the Altona songbird is now taking her music to new levels in the form of music therapy.

Since her childhood Ms Parkinson has always been musical, she has played various instruments over the years and loves to sing.

Music was what her daughter Isobel also loved.

At aged two little Isobel was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a common cancer in infancy and children younger than two.

She battled the cancer for a year but died in January 2010.

During this time Ms Parkinson said she never played

any music, but for Isobel music therapy was a gift.

“Music was her thing, I used to watch her listening to music and see how much happiness she would get from it,” Ms Parkinson said.

“It was the happiest time in her day.”

Now Ms Parkinson wants to bring that happiness to others and has enrolled to do her Masters in Music Therapy at Melbourne University.

“She is my inspiration for doing this,” Ms Parkinson said.

“I feel like it’s definitely my calling,” she said.

Some time after Isobel lost her battle to cancer Ms Parkinson turned back to music.

“The amazing thing is at that time I thought that I could never ever have a life again, I thought that I couldn’t work, I thought that I would never feel happiness and be able to re-engage in life again,” Ms Parkinson said.

“So to get to this point now for me is like a miracle, I never thought that I would get to this point.”

Ms Parkinson will play acoustic sessions for the public at Altona Sports Club every Sunday from 2 March between 2 pm and 5pm.

Original band shares its roots

By NICOLE VALICEK A BAND that formed more than four decades ago and was dubbed the originators of ‘Oz Blues’ is coming to Hobsons Bay. ‘Chain’ will perform at Way Out West Roots Music Club located at the Williamstown RSL on Sunday 2 March with founding member and guitarist Phil Manning doing a solo warm up set.

Since the band first formed in 1968 they remain the only blues band to have a number one hit on Australian charts.

They also have a distinction of having possibly the longest permanently released album in Australia rock history.

Phil said since forming 46 years ago the band has had a few line-up changes, a lot of practise and a following of loyal fans, some of which grew up listening to their music.

“There’s quite a lot of demand for the band than what we can actually do,” he said.

“It’s a great feeling, none of us expected we’d get this far down the track and still be playing ... to not only be in demand but to get out there and play is

a great thing, we really do enjoy it.

Phil said the band has been performing at Way Out West for the past decade and praised the venue for supporting music and providing it to western suburb locals.

“Having had such a long time of playing together and having such an amount of material it’s really nice to get together now and again and play that material,” he said.

“We’ll play our old hits and we’ll play a lot of material off our recent CD and some new material.”

THE PAST and present owners of a Newport market with a big focus on babies have created a sustainable business and made it flourish.

Altona North resident and mum Emma Macgregor and husband James were inspired to start Reuse It Baby Market in 2009 after visiting a preloved kids’ goods market in the Eastern suburbs.

In 2011 Newport couple Faith Symons and husband Sam happily bought the indoor market which has been held at

“The building’s location and unique presence has very much become part of our market’s identity,” Ms Symons said.

The market has 34 pre-loved stalls for hire.

“For stallholders it is a great way to offload unwanted but valuable goods in pursuit of some extra cash and/or much need space at home,” she said.

Ms Symons said the market was a great outlet for shoppers, now and then to get great value for money.

She said due to demand for

stalls, Reuse It has eight market dates this year.

“It is very satisfying to witness so many people buy and sell their pre-loved goods so that clothes, shoes, books, toys, furniture and baby paraphernalia can be recycled for pleasure and use of others,” she said.

Ms Symons said shoppers and stallholders come from as far afield as Eltham, Melton and Epping.

Brunch is served I’m always excited to receive recipes from readers, especially if they come with a good back story! So my sincere thanks to Food Bytes reader James Gyore from Altona for his quick and easy brunch recipe, which I’m featuring this week – tomato, cheese and herb tart.

James says “I must confide that I’m dreadful. I invite people over with no regard for the state of the house or for what is or is not in the fridge, freezer and pantry. Time and time again, with great enthusiasm, I invite friends and family to brunch with little thought given to what I might feed them.

The lawns needs mowing, the garden beds need weeding, there is a pile of washing that I’m trying to ignore, and being a handy-man, I still have not taken a look at the dryer which has been making odd noises for a few months now.

But, it’s the weekend, and I very much look forward to seeing those I love, however infrequently. We’re all overworked, overcommitted and too busy for each other most of the time.

So to hell with the chores, it’s the weekend, and it’s been a long time since I’ve seen my friends and family.

In my defence, with years of training and domestication, I do now have a collection of quick and easy go-to recipes for those occasions when friends and family are invited over to while away the late morning.”

TOMATO, HERB AND CHEESE TART: 1 sheet puff pastry 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 6 tomatoes, sliced 1 small red onion, halved and then sliced 1 tub Bocconcini cheese Salt and cracked pepper to taste Basil to garnish Pre-heat oven to 180C. Lay out the puff pastry on a baking tray. Sprinkle parmesan cheese over pastry. Top with sliced tomatoes and onion. Season with salt and pepper.

Bake until pastry is crispy and tomatoes hot.

Tear up the Bocconcini with fingers and distribute evenly over the tart.

Finely chop basil to garnish, before serving.

Note: the number of tomatoes needed to cover the sheet of pastry may vary.

Cadet unit’s future leaders stepping up THE cadet program at Werribee Secondary College began in 2009 with students training with 32 Army Cadet Unit in Geelong.

The unit commenced training at Werribee Secondary College in 2011 and was officially inaugurated by then Prime Minister Julia Gillard on 4 March 2012.

It is one of only three Army Cadet Units in government schools in Victoria, the others being Melbourne High School and Sebastopol College. The unit reached its capacity of 60

male and female cadets last year. It is committed to community involvement and is a vital component of the Anzac Day March, the Dawn Service and the Remembrance Day commemoration in Werribee.

The establishment of the cadet unit in the school has added a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their leadership skills and personal development.

Cadets also gain a wide range of skills which are normally outside the general school curriculum. These in-

clude bush craft and field craft, navigation, radio communications, marksmanship, drill and ceremonial activities, historical and cultural awareness.

The unit has quickly developed a reputation for excellence and has added to the already established tradition at Werribee Secondary College of producing officer candidates for the Australian Defence Force.

In past years students at the school have won a number of prestigious Australian Defence Force Academy scholarships and this continued in 2013.

CDT Sergeant Ramanjit Manpotra was successful in gaining entry into the ADFA to undertake an electrical engineering degree to become an engineering officer in the RAAF.

CDT Corporal Josh Pearmain was Dux of the Senior Leaders course held in December at Puckapunyal, receiving a prestigious Silver commendation from the National Deputy Commander of the Australian Army Cadets.

Family roots run deep in Little River

Hannah and Harry come from a long line of Little River Primary school alumni. 114839

MOST country towns have families who have lived in the district for many years.

Harold (Harry) and Hannah are fortunate enough to be descendants of the Richmond family who have been in Little River for many years, five generations, in fact.

Harry and Hannah’s great, greatgrandfather attended school at the Wurdi Yuang Primary School in the You Yangs.

This was the school that was later to become Little River Primary School many years later.

Harry and Hannah’s great-grandfather Thomas Colin Richmond also attended school at Wurdi Yuang.

Thomas grew up and lived his life in Little River where he farmed on the Richmond family property in Edgars Rd. Thomas served as a councillor on Wyndham City Council for six years.

Harry and Hannah’s grandfather Neil Richmond also attended school at Little River Primary School.

By this time the school had relo-

cated from the You Yangs and had changed its name to Little River Primary School.

Some years later when Neil Richmond became a parent he served on the school council.

He still resides in Little River where he has farmed all his life and now regularly attends functions at the school as a proud grandparent.

Harry and Hannah’s mother Susan Bufton was the fourth generation Richmond descendant to attend Little River Primary School in the early 1970s and following in her

father’s footsteps she is a current school councillor and a very happy parent of her two children.

Harry and Hannah are very proud to be part of a family that has such a long association with a wonderful country school where learning is important and life-long friendships are made.

DAVID JAANZ SCHOOL OF SINGING HOPPERS CROSSING STUDIO

STUDENTS and staff were welcomed back from the holidays with a new administration building creating a vibrant new entrance to Hoppers Crossing Secondary College.

The building is just one of many improvements at the college over the past 12 months which provide an attractive and engaging learning atmosphere.

Upgrades include extensive landscaping, resurfacing of basketball courts and construction of new tennis courts. All classrooms have been fitted with interactive technologies, allowing teaching staff to provide an engaging and differentiated curriculum to suit the needs of all students.

The upgrades complement the $2 million Science Centre which was officially opened by then Prime

Minister Julia Gillard in 2011.

The Science Centre has allowed Hoppers Crossing Secondary College to develop educational partnerships with Victoria University and local primary schools helping students excel in science education.

The college offers a diverse range of pathway options including VCE, VCAL and VET studies as well as the Enhanced Learning Pathway that provides access to university enhancement studies in VCE. This diversity allows students to be successful and reach their full potential. Leadership opportunities are accessible to all students through a strong student representative council.

The student leadership and voice co-ordinator ensures every opportunity is given to develop leadership skills beyond the classroom. In-

volvement in Wynspeak, the Youth Parliament forum and the United Nations Human Rights Convention are just some opportunities on offer.

Global citizenship is also fostered at the college through international programs such as the Sister City Exchange Program with Estancia High School (California), Language Immersion Program (Italy) and Overseas Learning Experience (China).

To celebrate the achievements over the past 30 years, college principal Wayne Terrill will host a celebratory dinner at Sheldon Reception Centre on Saturday 15 March.

By LIAM TWOMEY WERRIBEE claimed the battle of the West and the six points after a victory against Williamstown in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association on Saturday.

The two rivals squared off at Chirnside Park for day two of their clash, with Werribee resuming in the box seat.

On day one, the Tigers posted 9/238 on the back of a classy 106 from Tim O’Brien and scores of 40 from Michael Freeman and 31 from David Wolfe.

Needing 239 against one of the league’s strongest bowling attacks looked like a tough task on paper and it was made even harder after an early double strike.

Williamstown lost openers Nathan Bratby and Nathan Hall in quick succession to be 2/7.

However, after suffering a number of batting collapses in the first half of the season, it was a much stronger showing from the Seagulls’ middle order that kept them in the hunt.

Craig Sheedy (29), Matthew Dervan (17), Brenton Hodges (28), Jonty Paulsen (33), Matthew Inness (17), Jordan Doyle (41) and Samuel Davis (17) all kept the scoreboard ticking over.

The only thing missing was one big score to match what O’Brien was able to produce for the Tigers.

With that lacking, Werribee remained in charge, claiming the final wicket in the 59th over with the score

on 192. Heath Pritchard continued his outstanding season with the ball, taking 5/38 from 16.4 overs.

It is the fourth five-wicket haul for Pritchard this season.

“It is always a good game with Williamstown and that western suburbs rivalry,” Werribee president Ivo Havard said.

“We weren’t at our very best. There was some tacky fielding and some catches went down but we were able to get over them.

“There were some really good signs. Heath again was very good and I think that is his third five wicket-haul at Chirnside Park.

“He has brought great experience to the group and for him to have 30 wickets for the season is an absolute bonus,” Havard said.

“He has also brought a great work ethic to the group to demonstrate how you go about playing tough and competitive cricket.”

The result maintains Werribee’s unbeaten run in the VSDCA with the Tigers a perfect 11-0.

Williamstown are in 10th spot on the ladder with three wins for the season.

When round 12 gets underway this weekend, Werribee will meet Oakleigh while Williamstown will take on Sunshine.

Werribee will also be hosting its Pink Stump Day for the McGrath Foundation at Chirnside Park this Saturday.

ANOTHER impressive batting display from Travis Dean has lifted Footscray Edgewater to a strong position after day one of its clash against the Camberwell Magpies in the Victorian Premier Cricket.

The Bulldogs won the toss and batted first at the Camberwell Sports Ground and it was Dean Russ and Anthony Barton who kicked things off in the middle.

WERRIBEE City’s impressive rise through the ranks of Victorian soccer is finally complete, with the Bees confirmed to start in the state’s top flight competition next month. The promotion and relegation system between the NPL and NPL1 will be confirmed next week, along with the final fixtures for both the senior men’s and under-20s competitions. The winner of the Victorian NPL will play the Tasmanian NPL champion after the 26-round season. Werribee City will also participate in a number of NPL junior competitions - set to commence in early April.

AFL VICTORIA has launched a regional search for the most talented Indigenous and multicultural footballers in the state. The Kickstart and All Nations initiatives give under-15 footballers from Indigenous and multicultural backgrounds an opportunity to fast track their football development through a highly enjoyable on and off field program. To be eligible for the All Nations Cup Squad, players must have been born overseas or come from a non-english speaking background.

Players who impress with their skills and character at the regional trials will be invited to a high performance camp in April and could possibly win selection for the respective teams and compete at the National Indigenous and Multicultural Carnival in Coffs Harbour from 11-17 April. Tryouts for Indigenous and multicultural footballers will be held at Visy Park on Friday 21 February from 5pm until 7pm.

Sport THERE is a superstition in football circles that when a club changes coach, they will win the next time they play.

But what is going to happen in round one of the Western Region Football League season when eight new Division One coaches start barking orders for the first time? With so many new faces, LIAM TWOMEY takes a look at some of the biggest talking points about the new crop of leaders.

Eight talking points for eight coaching changes Who is the most high profile new coach?

IT is hard to look past Steve Kretiuk when it comes to experience at the top level. Kretiuk built a reputation as a tough as nails defender for Footscray between 1992 and 2003. After his career finished, he remained in AFL circles and coached the Western Jets for five years, helping a number of the West’s top talent make it to the AFL. Before taking on the top job at Hoppers Crossing, Kretiuk was also delivering opposition analysis for the Brisbane Lions.

Who are the familiar faces?

This won’t be Marcus Barclay’s first stint in coaching a WRFL Division One club. Barclay was in charge at Albion in 2011 when the club finished the season on top of the ladder. The Cats went on to lose the Division One grand final to Spotswood. Shortly after, Barclay was replaced as Albion head coach by Mark Greenshields.

Meanwhile, Jesse Smith joins Yarraville after a successful stint as a development coach at Sunshine.

Who are the favourite sons?

For Aaron Tymms (Albion), Josh Russo (Altona) and Tom Langlands (Spotswood), their appointments only further strengthen a rich history that each has with their respective club. The Langlands name is synonymous with Spotswood.

Tom played for the Woodsmen as a junior and his father Gavin is a WRFL life-member. Furthermore, his brother Will is the only player to have played in all seven of Spotswood’s grand final appearances from 2007 to 2013.

Tymms celebrated his 400th WRFL match last year and captained Albion to its premiership win in 2010. Russo was also a premiership captain with the Vikings in what was the club’s first Division One flag.

Who has been busy already?

With the season just six weeks away, recruiting and list management decisions have come thick and fast. Deer Park has farewelled league bestand-fairest winner Shannon Broadbent to the Goulburn Valley Football League. Travis Lunardi has moved from Altona to the Essendon District Football League. Former Hoppers Crossing captain Brad Murphy will coach the Melton Bloods.

On the incoming list, Kretiuk has ensured that Hoppers Crossing will be tough to beat at the stoppages with former AFL ruckman Wayde Skipper joining the club. Last year’s Division Two best-and-fairest winner at Sanctuary Lakes Jessi Lampi has joined Yarraville. Lampi will line up with former Western Jet Daniel Burton. Over the bridge, Danny Jacobs will pull on the jumper for Port Melbourne under Jason Love.

Who kept their jobs?

It is no surprise Marc Bullen was one of the two coaches to remain in his position after the 2013 season. In his first year in charge at Deer Park, Bullen took the Lions all the way to a premiership. But that could be just the start of the successful times at Deer Park with former AFL trio Brent Guerra, Bret Thornton and Ryan Hargrave joining the star-studded side. As one of the biggest improvers in 2013, Brett Jacobs will return to Sunshine hoping to build on the ground made last year. The Kangaroos jumped from fifth to third on the WRFL ladder and Jacobs was named the Division One Coach of the Year.

Who could be coaching a premiership?

With great power comes great responsibility and with great expectations can come great reward.

For Barclay and Langlands, that reward could be a premiership cup. Both new coaches are taking over teams that made the Division One finals last year, with St Albans knocked out in week one by Altona and Spotswood suffering its second onepoint loss on grand final day in two years. While the pressure to be at the top end of the ladder may be greater on Barclay and Langlands than their counterparts, the rewards could be well worth it.

What about Division Two? The influx of new coaches wasn’t just exclusive to Division One clubs this off-season. There were also plenty of changes among Division Two clubs as the move into a three-division system approaches. The new batch of Division Two coaches are: Adam Borg and John Thrush (Albanvale), Michael Shepperbottom (Braybrook), Paul Growcott (Caroline Springs) Rick Munn (Sunshine Heights), Stuart Daly (Glen Orden), Shaun Borlase and Matthew Welsh (North Footscray), Trevor Davies (West Footscray), Daniel Mitchell (Tarneit) and Joe Larizza (North Sunshine).

What can be expected from Werribee Districts?

After crossing over from the Victorian Amateur Football Association, Wade Chapman takes the reigns at a Werribee Districts outfit that has bypassed Division Two and will go toe-to-toe with the best the league has to offer. In coming from the VAFA, the Tigers are a bit of an unknown heading into the 2014 season however, one thing is for sure, Werribee has been busy. Footscray VFL player Brent Prismall will play at Soldiers Reserve when his VFL commitments allow and former Werribee VFL best-and-fairest winner Ben Sharp is another marquee signing. The club has also welcomed back a number of former players including Tate and Shaun McCutcheon as well as Brent Morrow.

New goals for Altona Gators

By ADEM SARICAOGLU NEW Altona coach Des Radoslovic is promising an exciting brand of Gators’ basketball in 2014.

Radoslovic, who took over from Randy Shanklin in October, has geared his off-season training and recruiting strategy toward ensuring his Gators are one of the most potent and prolific scoring teams in Division One Big V men’s basketball.

“You’ll see a bit of a dif-

ferent Altona this year, that’s one thing I’ll guarantee,” Radoslovic said.

“We’ll be high-scoring and outside the box from what Altona teams of the past have been.

“We’re going to be a very aggressive, up-tempo team.”

Radoslovic has put together what will be one of the younger teams in Division One, but said he’ll be implementing a game plan that should hold firm throughout the year.

“Division One is a very ex-

perienced, veteran-type league, and we want to be a little bit different,” Radoslovic said.

“I’ve gone out and recruited some young athletes that really go hand in hand with the way I want to play, so we’ll be an undersized team, but we’ll play to our strengths.”

Less than half of last year’s squad will be returning for the 2014 season, but Radoslovic has looked far and wide to fill the void left behind by the likes of Shaun Phelan, Craig Martin

and Nathan Wapshott.

A total of eight new faces have so far been confirmed for Altona, with Shanklin set to return to the floor after spending 2013 coaching both of the Gators’ senior men and women.

Radoslovic’s brother, Brent, has come across from the Keilor Thunder and Big V journeyman Peter Zamouzaris will

also be suiting up in the purple and gold. However, four of the new faces in the Gators’ squad have all come from outside Victoria, with Wani Toaishara (New Zealand), Daniel Borbajo (New South Wales), Isaac Deakin (Queensland) and Johnson Chung (NSW) all coming on board over the summer.

Radoslovic said making the

finals is a reasonable expectation for Altona this season despite going 7-15 in 2013.

“If you’re in the finals, you’re in the hunt, that’s the way it is,” Radoslovic said.

“So the goal is definitely to make the finals and have an impact from there.”

The new Big V season tips off in mid-March.

GOOD luck stopping Altona young gun Ross Audley on the badminton court.

The 11-year-old has been smashing winners for so long that he is running out of room for all his trophies.

Just last year, Audley claimed boys doubles titles in seven tournaments around the state including the Altona Junior, Geelong Junior and Victorian State Titles.

He was also victorious in the Geelong boys singles, as well as scoring runner-up trophies in three other singles events.

The wins don’t look like stopping any time soon for Audley.

His 2014 season got off to the perfect start after he was selected in the Victorian under-13 side, which won the Australian Teams Carnival.

At the event, Audley was victorious in the Australian under-13 boys doubles.

“I started playing because my brothers and mum played and I just tried it and I liked it,” Audley said.

“When I played the under-13 National Tournament, I did pretty well in that one so that is probably my favourite (tournament).”

Falcons in smashing sensation CITY West Falcons claimed the battle of the West in round one of the Victorian Netball League last week.

The Falcons smashed VU Western Lightning by 18 goals to get their VNL championship title defence off to the perfect start.

City West looked strong from the opening centre pass, scoring 14 goals in the first quarter to build an eight-goal lead.

With their backs to the wall, the Lightning tried to rebound and closed the gap to 10 at the main break.

However, in the second half, the Falcons kicked into another gear and secured the 52-34 win.

“They thoroughly deserved their win,” VU Western Lightning coach Matt Hills said.

“They were much better drilled than us and won many more positions all over the court.

“I’ve got to give credit to Casey Price (goal defence) and Emily Mannix (goal keeper). They had the better of our goalers on the night.”

As well as a strong defensive perfor-

mance, City West was also led by shooting duo Alice Teague-Neeld and Julia Knott.

Teague-Neeld scored 27 goals from 28 attempts while Knott shot 25 goals from 27 attempts.

For VU, Kate Thompson was the pick of the shooters and finished with 24 goals.

“We will do a pretty thorough review on this performance,” Hills said.

“It is really important that you do that early in the season to identify some of the key things that you want to work on. Particularly when, like us, you’ve got some new combinations.

“The last two years we have lost our first game of the season so this is three years in a row. It’s not a good thing but not the end of the world. We will do a review and then we will dust ourselves off, pick ourselves up and be back working hard for training on Monday night.”

VU is expected to have Amelia Hills back for its clash with the Southern Saints this week.

For the Falcons, they will look to make it two wins in a row when they take on Fed Uni Ballarat Pride.

Both matches are at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night.

Breaking the footy mould GRASSROOTS football continues to lead the way in breaking the male dominated world of Aussie Rules football with more examples this week in the WRFL. Meredith Anguin was appointed to the WRFL board and Sue Thornton announced as president of the new Tarneit Titans Football Club. Meredith brings a wealth of international business experience to the board and a family history with local football. Her late father Ron was president of the league for 11 years and her mother Thelma was treasurer for a decade. Both her parents are life-members of the league. Sue has been actively involved at Hoppers Crossing acting in a variety of roles including time keeper, trainer, team manager and administrator. She faces a huge task with the Titans making their debut in just a few weeks. I wish both ladies all the best and hope to see more in the future.

The most important thing to remember is to maintain correct tyre pressure to ensure good performance and safety.

Why is maintaining the right tyre pressure important? Underinflated tyres wear out faster as they can overheat, have increased rolling resistance and can require more fuel to maintain the speed.

Over-inflated tyres can lead to poor vehicle handling on the road.

Take a peek at the tweaks THE Mitsubishi ASX has been updated for the 2014 model year, gaining extra equipment, mechanical tweaks and revised prices.

Four of the six available ASX variants are now cheaper than before, with the entry-level front-wheel-drive petrol manual down $1000 to $24,990 and the flagship Aspire all-wheel-drive diesel auto down $3000 to $33,490.

Mitsubishi Australia has added 17-inch alloy wheels, a chrome grille garnish, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera displayed in a 6.1-inch screen to the three base-spec ASX variants, namely 2WD petrol manual, 2WD petrol CVT and 4WD diesel auto.

The updated high-grade ASX Aspire variants, namely 2WD petrol CVT, 4WD petrol CVT and 4WD diesel auto, gain the MMCS infotainment system with seven-inch touchscreen and satellite navigation, as well as black roof rails and, for the 2WD model, a panoramic sunroof previously stan-

dard on 4WD. All models benefit from a reshaped rear bench seat base for added passenger comfort.

Revisions have also been made to the suspension and the shape of the door mirrors, promising improved ride and handling and noise, vibration, harshness levels respectively.

The ASX interior envelopes the occupants in comfort making it as striking on the inside as it looks on the outside.

The aim was to get the balance between style, comfort and practicality just right.

For instance, the ergonomically designed seats are as comfortable as they look, and when combined with the telescopic steering wheel, offer the ideal driving position whatever the size of the driver.

Kia Proceed GT shows Korean car-makers are giving their Japanese rivals a run for their money and challenging the Europeans. 114872

Kia creates new ground THIS hot hatch may finally change perceptions about Korean cars once and for all.

It’s called the Kia Proceed GT and it shows Korean carmakers have all but leapfrogged their Japanese rivals and are now on their way to challenging the Europeans.

It was designed by a Frenchman, engineered in Germany and is made in Slovakia which, incidentally, produces more cars per capita than any other country.

There are three models in the Kia GT range in Europe starting at the equivalent of $32,990 and stretching to $42,990.

Australia will likely get two models when the car goes on sale in March 2014.

The local starting price is

The digital instrument display is like something out of a fighter jet.
