THE generosity of a local family will help those with disabilities get out about in the community.

Mount Evelyn based not-for-profit organisation, Melba Support Services, received a $50,000 donation from the family of one their clients in gratitude for their support over the years.

Their son David, lives in one of Melba’s supported living accommodation services in Mooroolbark and he also uses Melba’s Individual Support Arrangements program.

Through this program, David, together with his friends and family, determine how his funding package is best spent to ensure that he is doing all of the things that are important to him.

“David is a young man with a strong sense of presence,” Melba’s CEO, Glenn Foard said.

“He is well known in his community and for many years he has been involved in a variety of community programs.

“His work with the Animal Aid and BlueCross dogs’ refuges - engaging and socialising with dogs up for adoption, helping them become familiar with wheelchairs - is incredibly valuable.”

From advocating for increased disability parking at shopping centres and the return of the disability sailing program at Lillydale Lake, David has influential presence in the community.

In 2012 the Rotary Club Southern District commended David’s community work and awarded him their Shine-On Award.

David’s parents Graham and AnneMarie are his number one supporters and work closely with Melba in ensuring his life is full of things that make him happy.

“David draws people into his world,” Graham said.

“David has many friends and cannot go far at a shopping centre without bumping into someone he knows.

He’s always stopping to say ‘Hi’ wherever we are.

Market is gearing up

By REBECCA BILLS THE second last Mount Evelyn Twilight Market for the season was held last Thursday.

Around 44 stalls lined the Wray Crescent car park selling things ranging from food and collectables to toys.

Kathie and Garry Freeman from the Mount Evelyn Post Office, who organised the market as part of the Mount Evelyn Chamber of Commerce, said despite the smoky air it was

still a good market. “We were expecting a few more residents to come through but this time of year with school back we understand it’s sometimes hard to attend,” Mr Freeman said.

“For the next market we would like to have a few more produce stalls and some live entertainment.

“It will be the last one for the season and we really want to make it a celebration with a party-like atmosphere.”

The Twilight Market is a haven for local art, craft, jewellery, clothing and accessories as well as fresh produce, health foods, natural products and healing services.

The market is set along the historic Warburton Rail Trail in the heart of the Mount Evelyn shopping Village - predominantly in the Wray Crescent car park.

The next Twilight Market will be on Thursday 13 March.

TWO defibrillators will now be located at Mount Evelyn Chemmart and Mount Evelyn IGA after generous community donations.

Mount Evelyn residents Joan and Vic Chittenden have donated one of the defibrillators for the Mount Evelyn community that will be located in the Mount Evelyn Chemmart.

The second defibrillator has been donated by Zen Do Ka Mount Evelyn Martial Arts and will be located at the Mount Evelyn IGA. According to Mount Evelyn Neighbourhood Watch, the best chance of survival for those experiencing cardiac arrest is effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) combined with early defibrillation.

“Using an automated external defibrillator (AED) on a casualty who has experienced cardiac arrest is vital to their survival,” the report said.

Duty and Liquor Manager at Mount Evelyn IGA Julie Schroen said having a defibrillator in the store provides extra safety for all staff and customers.

“We have had incidences in the past where the duty managers have had to pull on their first aid skills when an incident has occurred,” she said.

“This is also a bit of back-up for the guys if they are not feeling confident in actually doing the CPR.” Ms Schroen said having

“We had a big fundraising night and we had contribution from students, family and friends raising over two grand on the night,” she said.

Mount Evelyn Neighbourhood Watch is hosting a CPR/ defibrillator demonstration by Tom Clark from St John Ambulance on Thursday 20 February from 7.30pm.

The evening will be held at Mount Evelyn Library Community Room, 50 Wray Crescent, Mount Evelyn.

By REBECCA BILLS CARS parked out the front of the Mount Evelyn Christian Reformed Church and Hardy House were fined last December after complaints from local residents.

Mount Evelyn Christian Reformed Church Minister Richard Schoenmaker said each Sunday nearly 200 churchgoers attended the 9.30am service at the church with many opting to park in the road reserve in front of the church and Hardy House - unaware that this was not allowed.

Health Andrew Paxton said council officers responded to complaints from residents about church patrons’ cars blocking access to their properties.

“One resident had also expressed concerns that the parked cars would block access to emergency vehicles travelling on the road to get to an emergency,” he said.

“Council officers have since been working with church members to overcome parking issues and ensure the road is not obstructed when the church is in use.”

Mr Schoenmaker said the members of his church were surprised

because they had been attending the church for many years and this was the first time there had been a problem parking there.

“The only signage that says no parking is in front of the memorial, so we all thought it was OK to park there,” he said.

“We are a little bit shocked that there wasn’t any warning from council, it would have been nice for them to have spoken to us first before coming in and fining everyone.

“If we knew it was not allowed, we would not have parked there.”

Mr Schoenmaker and Mount Evelyn RSL president Roger Bon-

ess said there was a real parking issue at the road reserve located off Birmingham Road and hoped that this incident would highlight to the council the need for safer parking in the area.

Mr Paxton said council’s traffic engineers were also looking at ways to make parking on the road reserve compliant with the Victorian Road Rules.

“Anyone can appeal an infringement, which will be reviewed and, subjected to the circumstances, may be enforced or withdrawn,” he said.

“All appeals should be forwarded to the council in writing.”

Membership drive SUMMER has been tough for firies this year, but their heroic efforts have saved lives, homes and property.

Montrose CFA is now looking for new volunteers - a decision that could change their lives.

The brigade is looking for people of all backgrounds, aged 17 up, to join up as operational firefighters.

This includes attending house fires, grass fires, car accidents and hazardous materials spills.

Those who join up will be fully trained and issued with protective equipment at no cost. Montrose member Rob Waters said the brigade was looking for people from all walks of life.

“We’re looking for men, women, mums and dads,

uni students - all sorts of people,” Mr Waters said.

“As soon as they undertake their training and learn the art of fire-fighting they will get out on the fire ground.”

COMMUNITY members, groups, and leaders of Mount Evelyn came together last Wednesday night to discuss the town’s 2014 plan of action.

Morrisons chief executive officer Jan Simmons said the event was a success with the night starting with a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis giving all who attended the opportunity to input ideas.

“Throughout the night, we were then able to add to those lists as the conversations continued,” she said.

“This meeting gives the community a voice, and there is a sense of continuity in the ideas that are discussed being brought to fruition. The biggest table for the night was the planning table which shows our maturity as a community.”

Talk topics of the night included Mount Evelyn as a tourist destination, toilets at Morrisons Reserve, education opportunities.

Ms Simmons said she was happy with the turnout with a really diverse selection of ages and community group representatives attending on the night.

She said what made the event unique was the attendance of school leaders from Yarra Hills Secondary College, Mount Evelyn Primary School, Birmingham Primary School and Saint Mary’s Primary School who shared their thoughts and visions for the community.

Kaila Thompson said being involved in the township meeting was a great opportunity to voice her ideas and hear the opinions of others on Mount Evelyn.

“I think it was very helpful in getting lots of different members throughout the community to come along and discuss things that can be done to better our town,” she said.

The event is sponsored by Mount Evelyn and Districts Community Bank and managed by Mount Evelyn Township Improvement Committee (METIC).

Mount Evelyn Community Bank branch chairman Jill Rule said the organisation saw the township planning event as a co-operatively spirited venture to strengthen the Mount Evelyn community.

“It creates a forum that gives the people who live here the opportunity to have a say on what happens in their town,” she said.

“As ‘the community’ is one of the bank’s strategic partners, we are delighted to support and engage in viable future initiatives that may enhance our environment, make our business district more vibrant and strengthen our community.

“Conversely, we believe this forum also creates the opportunity to identify and discuss any weaknesses in our town.”

Ms Rule said the bank considered itself to be an essential part of the community fabric and looked forward to the outcomes from this evening.

Limited apology I DO not apologise to the council (Apology After Angry Words, Mail 11 February).

The only person who deserves an apology is Fiona McAllister.

She is the only person on council who has listened, helped and shown any compassion.

So I would like to publicly apologise to her only.

The rest of the councillors deserved what they got.

We are not the only people the council have wronged.

Show some spirit DEAR Fiona McAllister, I, most fortunately, am proud to be a fourth generation Australian - a nation pioneered by the courageous spirit of settlers working in harmony and community spirit for their meagre existence.

My email is to request immediate steps be taken to ensure the Healesville Pool remains to service the needs of this whole community and surrounds.

Retiring to Healesville six years ago and a keen lap swimmer with a pool-guard certificate, I have been doing a few hours (of swimming) each week - more so as a pleasure than work based.

This pool, as I have seen, is much more than a swim venue.

It is a common place where all sorts come

Just a common criminal SCHAPELLE Corby is a convicted drug smuggler and has been sentenced accordingly.

In the eyes of the Australian community, she has been promoted as some kind of heroine, and the media have continued to provide a hyped-up coverage of her story, over time, as an inmate of an Indonesian prison, the serving of her sentence and her appeals and, just now, her parole process.

The facts of her activities and background are well known and recorded for all to see.

Why does the Australian media persist in coverage of her progress and seemingly promote her as a person of national interest?

The fact remains that she is a convicted common criminal who got caught. No more, no less.

The question needs to be asked: does the media coverage promote her as a heroine in the eyes of young people around Australia?

together - as swimmers, elderly exercisers, aerobics, handicapped, rehab, families, children learning to swim and school groups from near and far.

Personally, I have been adopted and welcomed by so many.

We have travelled Australia and the world, and this community pool is blessed with life and spirit.

I used to open the pool at 6am and have swimmers waiting at the door.

Now it’s an 8.30 opening and reduced hours all week, including no more Sundays.

I have seen Ross and staff working through the night when the pool was regularly flooded with mud and debris from overflowing drains during school renovations.

Perhaps, in the future, an aquatic centre will be built but, for now, I implore you to strengthen a case for the funding and reinstatement of opening hours for a rather unique asset of Healesville.

Does this coverage imply among young Australians that there is some diminished risk if they, too, go down the same pathway.

There are young Australians awaiting the sentence of death in Asian countries for committing similar crimes against our community.

Maybe we do not hear too much about their fate.

I am certain that young people in our community do not read the local newspaper.

I hope that their parents do so, and maybe pass on their thoughts to their children.

I am hoping that all the young people around our community say “No” to drugs and their traffic around the community.

If not, and they say “Yes”, there is no hope for them in the future, and only have themselves to blame for their misery.

Tree house disgrace FIRSTLY, the ‘lock on’, a disgraceful act by these people who don’t know what a day’s work, means they have nothing better to do other than stop people doing an honest and lawful job.

I’ve lived in Healesville most of my life, part of it in Toolangi, and went to school in Toolangi.

I’ve lived in Healesville ever since.

My father worked in a timber mill in Toolangi many years ago.

These activists/protesters are mostly not local.

The very people they are targeting are hardworking, good people trying to earn a living, who are willing to put themselves in danger fighting fires with their own machinery when needed.

They support local businesses in the town, ours included.

They are important to our economy. ’The Tree House’ is an absolute joke. They have cut branches off the trees to attach their junk to them. It should not have been allowed to have been hung from the tree, let alone to be still there.

I would like to know if O.H.S. (Occupational

Health and Safety) have had a look at the goings on up there. I have been up and had a look at it, and I am not impressed.

Something should be done immediately to remove it.

Enforce logging safety laws I WOULD like to respond to last week’s article about the protest at the logging coupe in Toolangi (Black Day For Protest, Mail, 11 February).

I am a Yarra Valley based harvesting contractor working for VicForests.

I agree with Graham Taylor as last Friday’s anniversary protest was insensitive to the feelings of Victorians who lost friends, family or property in the Black Saturday fires.

This was also a sensitive time for our business with the loss of equipment and the impact of the fires on our own personal property on Black Saturday.

Our company and many others like ours turned our equipment over to the DSE for four weeks after that day suppressing the fire.

It is often forgotten that harvesting contractors are called on by the DSE/DEPI for experienced frontline 24/7 dozer operators.

Due to the fires our industry has taken a significant reduction in the amount of timber available for harvesting resulting in the loss of work for local businesses and local timber workers.

We still operate a profitable business sustainably harvesting a renewable resource employing five local staff putting $500,000 in wages back into businesses in the shires of Yarra Ranges and Murrindindi as well as our company contributing $45,000 per month to local businesses in these shires.

I would like to call on the DEPI to enact the Public Safety Zone laws to enable contractors to go about their lawful business to contribute to the state’s economy.

Warburton Mail February 21 1964 Former Shire President Dies MR. Charles Mathews a former councillor for Upper Yarra Council, who was Shire President in 1947, died suddenly at his home in Herbert Street, Yarra Junction, on February 16th.

Mr. Mathers lived for many years at Hoddles Creek, shifting to Yarra Junction some ten years ago. He kept reasonably good health for a man in late seventies and his death came as an unexpected shock to those who knew him.

Mr. Mathers is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth, having lost his wife,

Push for booze law change

By KATH GANNAWAY CONCERNED councillors are calling on the government for a change in the law to allow them to reject liquor outlet applications.

Yarra Ranges Council has voted to write to the Planning Minister after councillors were split on the issue of a permit for the sale of packaged liquor at the SupaIGA supermarket in the Olive Tree Shopping Centre.

The decision came after four councillors, Terry Avery, Samantha Dunn, Len Cox and Jason Callanan, argued strongly against an officers’ recommendation at a council meeting on 11 February.

During a passionate debate councillors weighed up their legal ability to

refuse the application based on their concerns about the proliferation of liquor outlets, the detrimental effect of alcohol on Yarra Ranges communities and how much council should interfere with free enterprise.

Moving an alternative motion to refuse the permit, Cr Avery said Lilydale was “swimming in alcohol”.

“Enough is enough,” he said, adding that his reasoning for wanting to stop another liquor outlet in Lilydale related not to the applicant, but to the product.

The council report said there were 54 active liquor licences in Lilydale township, the majority for on-premises consumption.

It said there were six packaged li-

quor licences active within 800 metres of the IGA site.

“My reasoning relates to accessibility. Yarra Ranges and the whole county is swimming in alcohol and with so many dispensing alcohol, it’s time to say enough is enough,” Cr Avery said.

Cr Jim Child argued, however, for free enterprise saying the alternative motion had no substance.

“We’re looking at a licensed premises that has to be in an appropriate situation and this is in commercial one zoning (where) a bottle shop is an as of right and no permit is required,” he said.

“We are not here to control free enterprise and competition, especially in a commercial one zone.

“This is free enterprise, he has a right to do it. How dare we,” he said.

Cr Dunn said the council has two legislated roles - health and welfare and land use.

“We have those roles, but we can’t link them under the state legislation,” she said.

She said there was a need to reduce harm from alcohol in Yarra Ranges and that she had real concerns about as of right use in the planning scheme which did not meet the expectations of the community. In addition to the original recommendation, the council will now write to the minister seeking an urgent review of council’s ability to consider and assess an over-supply of liquor outlets in an area.

“If there are problems down there in regard to packaged alcohol, and it’s not consumption, then the relative authorities should take action.

“Our role is not to be prohibiting a planning scheme-compliant local business,” he said.

“Whether we have six, eight or 10 bottle shops is not the issue. I think the day will come when they start going broke... that’s free enterprise.”

Cr Cliff supported the argument saying welfare and planning were two different issues and that until the State Government brought in rules that allow the council to regulate differently then the council should not simply refuse an application.

“I completely understand the principal’s frustration - it’s an incredibly unusual situation for a school to be in,” she said.

“I’m doing everything in my power to get it resolved as quickly as possible.”

She said the council would be having a follow-up meeting with the Healesville High School to discuss the situation in the near future.

Healesville Swimming Club president Mark Melville has urged for a solution to be reached, and for hours to be brought back to usual because morning swimmers are missing out.

“It’s had a reasonable impact on the club - particularly our swimmers,” Mr Melville said.

“The reduction in hours makes it difficult to get in the longer training sessions that the older swimmers need.”

He said that, should the pool close, the club and its 35 mem-

bers would be “homeless”, and that the cuts have made it hard to bring new coaches and members to the pool.

“It’s difficult to get some long-term commitments - there appears to be no guaranteed future,” Mr Melville said.

“We need to draw a line in the sand and say ‘what’s going on?”

Yarra Ranges Council is currently finalising a feasibility study for a new aquatics centre for the Yarra Valley, which is set to be discussed at the council in the next two months.

Cr McAllister said the study had been in the works for about 18 months and that a new aquatics facility in the area would cost millions of dollars.

“We’re not talking two or three million - it’s going to be a lot of money,” she said.

Cr McAllister also said the council would be reviewing its aquatics strategy in the near future, which would take about 18 months.

THE closure of Healesville’s indoor pool has been ruled “off the cards” by Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister as concerned residents petition the council.

Councillor McAllister confirmed that the council was working with Healesville High School, which runs the Jack Hort Memorial Pool, to resolve the pool’s situation quickly and said that closing the pool was not an option.

“I’ve been contacted by people from Kinglake and Marysville, saying ’please don’t let it close’,” she said. “That’s not on the cards at all.”

The announcement comes after pool manager Ross Ilsley told the Mail earlier this year that the pool faced being closed before March 2015 due to a $50,000 running cost loss, sparking concern from a number of local pool users.

The public pool has been run mostly on the high school’s funds and hours have been drastically cut back at the pool since December to ease the financial strain.

A 30-year funding agreement, signed in 2001, stipulates that the council and school will work to find a solution if the pool runs at a loss.

Currently, a table of petitions sit at the entrance to the pool, urging community members to rally behind the cause and to help save the pool and reinstate its recently-slashed opening hours to their former status.

Cr McAllister said the pool was in a unique situation - it sits on Education Department land, is run by the school, and receives some funding from

Admire conviction I FIND it very frustrating that the media are constantly painting Generation Y as lazy, aggressive over-consumers.

Yet here we have a group of primarily young people employing means of non-violent resistance towards an environmentally damaging plan, and the media still manages to depict them negatively.

Why is the council not coming up with say $50,000 per year to keep the pool open? The rates are $160 million. $50,000 is petty cash to the council. It is money well spent.

Who is making these decisions? Who is reviewing these decisions? I spoke to Mark Varmalis at the council about three weeks ago.

His words to me were that the school runs the pool and they should have a proper budget and run it as a business.

He gave me no hint that he thought it was the council’s responsibility to fund the pool.

Logging risks THE Mail Newspaper Group should be railing against the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) and the forest-destroying industries.

Loggers have failed to invest in plantations to ensure the future of its own industry. They will not be satisfied until every remnant of our once great forests have been felled.

Logging is a very small percentage of the economy of the Yarra valley, and it puts at risk the livelihoods of the majority who derive their income from visitors who see the environment as major attraction.

If for no other reason than self-interest, the Mail Newspaper Group should be supporting the aims of the Little Red Toolangi Treehouse.

I suspect that little of your revenue is derived from loggers.

I suspect that Mail Newspaper Group would fail if its advertisers who see the environment as a driver of their business decided to stop advertising in your paper.

Window on forests

Support recycling ALTHOUGH it is unfortunate that Hannah Schneider’s bike was mistakenly picked up as hard rubbish, when you consider the amount of hard rubbish transfer this isn’t a common occurrence.

My advice at any time would be to take bikes inside the yard out of eyesight.

The hard rubbish is a fantastic opportunity for locals to share unwanted goods - many people deliberately put items out with easy access to encourage it.

We, the public, need such committed people to be our eyes and ears, especially when it seems that governments are willing to ignore the long-time studied advice of forest experts such as Professor David Lindenmayer, instead preferring to prop up destructive, wasteful and it seems unprofitable logging practices.

I AM writing you today in regards to an article in your paper I read just now which quite saddened me.

I am speaking of The Little Red Toolangi Treehouse and how the logging company in kahoots with the State Government feels like it should be destroyed.

It quite broke my heart reading that, as the lady in the tree house is not there for her own amusement, but in solidarity with the community of Toolangi and the Leadbeater’s Possum and to bring attention to these needless destruction of century-old forest all for some sheets of paper.

The people of Toolangi do not at all mind the presence of the tree house (I spoke to many when I was there only weeks ago) and are well opposed to the destruction of the forest, as it is a haven for life forms of all kinds, as well as being a beautifully picturesque landscape.

The logging companies must have paid a good deal of money to some ministers to have gotten permission to log in old-growth forests, when there are plenty plantations around.

I suspect most of the paper goes to China or India, as is most often the case, leaving virtually no money in it for the people and a scarred land.

It is a very sad situation when a government acts against the will of the people - surely that is not what a democracy is about?

I think more attention needs to be brought to this most dire issue, and the lady in the treehouse should receive all the support she can get, also from your paper.

Nothing she does is in any way harming others, the opposite is the case - she is trying to save an endangered species, a beautiful forest and halt mindless destruction.

I would very much appreciate if you could dedicate some space in your paper to our concerns and to highlight this issue more. I hope this message reaches you and strikes a chord.

This is not just about the gross negligence of both the logging companies and the Government, this is also a matter of principle. The will of the people not being suppressed by monetary agendas, as we’re sadly seeing more and more in this once beautiful and alive country.

Legal advice aimed at family violence

By JESSE GRAHAM FAMILY violence will be in the crosshairs as Healesville’s new and long-awaited legal centre opens its doors to the public, with free advice available for those in need.

Healesville’s Eastern Legal Community Centre (ECLC) opened for its first day of business today, Tuesday 18 February, with a team of lawyers to provide free legal advice.

The centre was announced for the Healesville Community Link building in September, and was expected to open in November, but the opening was delayed.

ECLC CEO Michael Smith said everyone at the centre was excited about the opening, and that the centre would run three days a week, from Tuesday until Thursday, 9am5pm.

Three of the centre’s main focuses will be homelessness, tenancy issues and family violence, with

lawyers and trained staff able to offer advice on an appointment basis.

“We’ll see how it goes, but we’re really keen for the community to come in,” Mr Smith said.

“We’ve been looking forward to this for a long time - it’s a great time to build those partnerships and to help those who need legal help.”

Mr Smith said that, if the community demand was sufficient, it could be possible to open the centre more days of the week.

Before the opening of the centre, the closest ECLC was in Boronia, with outreach services running one day per week in the area.

Outreach services will continue out of the Healesville office, to Yarra Glen, Yarra Junction and Lilydale.

Input on inclusion strategy sought

By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Ranges Council’s Draft Equity, Access and Inclusion Strategy is out for public comment.

The council, at its 11 February meeting, endorsed the draft, which will now go on public exhibition for at least 42 days.

Cr Maria McCarthy said the draft strategy had been strengthened following feedback from the council and the Disability Advisory Council, the key change being to strengthen council’s advocacy role.

She said the four goals contained in the strategy were to ensure information was accessible and supports equitable participation and inclusion in civic life, that council buildings and infrastructure are accessible to everyone, that Yarra Ranges is an inclusive community

where everyone can participate equally and that council’s commitment to equity, access and inclusion is demonstrated in all aspects of the business.

Mayor Fiona McAllister said she was on the Disability Advisory Council when the strategy was developed.

“Inclusion is a topic very close to my heart, and I think we as a community have a long way to travel on this. I am behind anything we do as a council to support this,” she said.

“It should be a very short journey, but, sadly, it’s a longer journey than we would have thought.”

Pouring in for wine festival

By JESSE GRAHAM THE Yarra Valley Grape Grazing Festival had its big return last weekend, with thousands of people pouring into the town for the first event in five years.

The festival ran over the weekend from 14-16 February across the valley from Dixons Creek through to Seville and featured more than 60 events.

Thousands of people poured into the area to sample the wares of local producers and wineries for the festival, which is back after a five-year absence - the last festival was in 2009.

Special events were held all around the valley, with the community coming out to a special breakfast along Healesville’s main street to celebrate the festival.

Special deals, free coffee for Grape Grazing pass-holders and even visiting creatures from Healesville Sanctuary were some of the attractions to the breakfast event. Meanwhile, music was rife throughout the festival - wineries hosted live bands while visitors had a leisurely afternoon graze over produce, while Rochford Winery had musical heavyweight Jimmy Barnes perform. The performance

was for a special A Day on the Green event to coincide with the festival, and thousands attended the concert alone.

Wine Yarra Valley CEO Richard Howden said that figures have yet to be finalised, but organisers were expecting about 10,000 people in the lead up to the festival.

He said the feedback from the events thus far has been positive, and the events he visited seemed to be popular with festival-goers.

“We got plenty of people into the valley,” he said.

“The weather held out - it wasn’t 40 degrees, so that was great.

“All-in-all, I think it was a really good comeback - something really solid to build on for future years.”

Mr Howden said that next year’s Grape Grazing Festival was already being organised and encouraged residents to keep an eye on the website closer to the date.

Sticker that’s a life-saver THE popularity of stick-figure stickers on cars are a great revealer of how many mums, dads, kids, dogs and even horses make up the ‘family’.

There’s an argument to be made however that the motoring public’s love affair with stickers should extend to stickers that would alert emergency services to critical patient information at the scene of a serious crash.

Emergency ID Australia took up the challenge and released a range of vehicle stickers for child seats, glove-boxes and inside car doors in January.

These stickers are designed to alert paramedics and police to potentially life-saving information about a vehicle’s occupants such as illness, medications, allergies and next of kin details.

Company director Nicole Graham said the number of people seriously injured on Australian roads every day made it important to make it easier for the emergency services to better care for people when they need it most.

“In the event of an accident the people involved may be seriously injured, or in shock, and unable to pass on critical details about themselves or others to emergency service personnel,” Ms Graham said.

She said all that needs to be done is to write the important medical information on the sticker and stick it on to the most relevant part of the car.

“It could be a life-saver,” she said.

NOSE-TO-TAIL crashes get top billing when it comes to Victorian drivers involved in a crash.

Statistics released this month by national car insurance AAMI showed an analysis of almost 250,000 accident insurance claims showed nearly three out of 10 crashes involved a car colliding into the back of another.

The report listed the top five crashes for Victorian drivers as nose-to-tail, followed by fail to give way, parked car dings, collision with a stationary object and collision while reversing. It also said nothing had changed much with N2T collisions in the past decade.

“Being the worst in the country for nose-to-tails is really not a record to be proud of, AAMI spokesperson Reuben Aitchison said.

He urged drivers to be more patient and to drive according to the speed limit and the road and environmental conditions.

It’s a message endorsed by Colin Sullivan from RACV Drive School at Yarra Junction who has been teaching people to drive in the Yarra Valley for more than 24 years.

Mr Sullivan said there were a few dangerous intersections around the valley where nose-to-tail collisions are prevalent and a whole range of environmental situations where the need to stop suddenly can result in a crash.

And, whether it’s in the suburbs, the city or the country, he advocates the two-second gap as a good rule

of thumb to use to make sure the gap between vehicles will stand the test of a sudden stop - for whatever reason.

Down the line, he said people tend to worry about someone stealing their spot if they leave to big a gap.

On country roads it’s distractions that people need to be aware of, he said.

“In the city you have things buzzing around you that keep you alert, but I would say on country roads you need to maintain your awareness because it’s easy to become too relaxed without realising it,” he said.

“Wherever you’re driving, if we’re going to help reduce the most common car crash, keeping a safe distance is the best thing anyone can do, along with learning to look ahead and read the signs.”

The two-second gap involves observing a point at which the car in front passes a particular marker and counting to yourself ’one thousand and one; one thousand and two’. If you’ve passed the marker before you’ve finished the internal dialogue, the gap is too short.

“The good thing about the twosecond gap is that it gets bigger the faster you are travelling. A two-second gap at 80km/h is quite big,” Mr Sullivan said.

When the amount of time required to avoid a collision is correspondingly quite small, it’s a formula designed to ensure that noone, metaphorically, and potentially disastrously, falls through the noseto-tail gap.

Schools go to market

By KATH GANNAWAY FIVE primary schools along and off the Warburton Highway are turning their school gates into farm gates this year as part of the WHYLD community group’s Minimarkets project.

Woori Yallock, Hoddles Creek, Yellingbo, Launching Place and Don Valley schools will take turns at hosting the markets each Thursday from 3.30pm to 5pm providing locals, and visitors to the area, an opportunity to stock up on fresh local produce and other home-made items.

The Minimarkets project evolved from the WHYLD community plan developed in 2013 and is supported

by Yarra Ranges Council, Woori Yallock Community Bank and the Woori Community House.

Organiser Meryl Knoll said the markets aimed to encourage the sale of homemade and home grown

products, and support local emerging and established businesses.

Previous markets have included homemade lemonade, apple slinkies, donkey rides for the kids and the opportunity for parents to stock up on fresh locally grown fruit including apples, stone-fruit, strawberries and nashi pears, as well homemade jams.

Ms Knoll said the added benefits were that community groups can promote and share their work, the schools benefit from the opportunity to run a stall and all stallholder fees are donated directly to the host school.

“There is a food and book swap, so everyone, young and old, can participate,” Ms Knoll said. “Minimarkets are more than just markets, they are about bringing community together to sell, swap, share and socialise.”

Cultural mix on track

Culture Tracks - Yarra Ranges Council’s program of performance, music, exhibitions, workshops and movies for 2014.

The program covers events at The Memo in Healesville, Upper Yarra Arts Centre at Warburton, Montrose Town Centre, Mooroolbark Community Centre, Burrinja Cultural Centre at Upwey and Yarra Ranges Regional Museum at Lilydale.

It invites people to make tracks to the performances and exhibitions that are outside of their own township, but which are very much part of the broader cultural experience of the big, wide world of Yarra Ranges.

Yarra Ranges’ Regional Arts Coordinator Jenny Davies said she is very happy with the program rating

‘Encoded’ coming to the Memo in Healesville in October.

“I would rate it the event of the year,” she said describing it as an incredibly spectacular work combining contemporary dance, acrobatics and the latest in light projection.

Ms Davies, as it turns out, has a number of favourites. Josh Pyke a modern-day storyteller with four top 10 selling albums and our Aria Awards to his credit, Fred Smith who draws on his experiences as diplomat and political adviser in Afghanistan in Dust of Uruzgan in June.

“I was blown away when I listened to the CD, I was very moved.

THE one must-have item I need to watch any romance movie is not popcorn, but a purse full of tissues. I’ve been known to cry over sad (or happy) commercials, so when I read the blurb for Endless Love: “passion yields to tragedy when the parents of a privileged girl attempt to thwart her heated romance with a handsome valet”, I thought I’d better pack a few extra.

Sadly, my eyes remained dry.

The 1981 Franco Zeffirelli remake was like watching a commercial for Guess Jeans.

David and Jade (played by Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde) are undoubtedly gorgeous, but they never seemed to experience any real connection to the troubling events unfolding around them.

But, despite the loss of a sibling, a potentially serious car crash, a house fire, the father’s determinations to have his daughter finish her internship, everything seemed a bit too clean and sanitised.

Endless Love is the perfect movie for younger teenage girls. You can leave the tissues at home.

Muscle builds cancer support

By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Junction Cricket Club will be supporting the McGrath Foundation next weekend with two fund-raisers.

The Raw Muscle male review will be at the club on Friday night, 21 February, for a Ladies’ Night with entertainment, free gift bags and prizes throughout the evening.

On Saturday the 22nd, the club will host Pink Stumps Day with players and supporters on and off the ground wearing pink in support of the foundation

which raises funds for cancer support.

Events organiser Paula Nightingale said the club is looking forward to both events and to being part of an annual event which is now very much part of cricketing culture and a great social day.

There will be nibbles, pink cocktails and prizes.

Long-term player and captain of Junction’s D Grade David Flutter urged the community to support the events saying Pink Stumps Day was now part of the Australian cricket calendar with clubs from the highest echelons of the

sport down to small country clubs such as Yarra Junction taking part.

“Everyone knows someone who has had cancer of some sort,” he said, adding that both his parents had died of cancer and his partner Debbie has also had cancer.

“The McGrath Foundation is a very worthwhile cause. I would certainly urge people to come along and support it,” he said.

World game attracts many nations to pitch in

By KATH GANNAWAY HEALESVILLE soccer is like a local United Nations of the game.

Thursday nights as players of all ages and backgrounds arrive at the Queen’s Park Soccer Ground for a social kick around, Healesville Soccer Club president Nick Caloutas says a lot of boundaries have been broken down since the club started in 2000.

The observation that there are players here whose backgrounds go back to Italy, Africa, England, Germany, Holland, Greece, Serbia, Ireland, Scotland, Ukraine and, in the juniors, to the first Australians, hardly raises an eyebrow.

“It’s really about heritage, more than nationality,” Nick said.

Most are born in Australia with parents or grandparents who have come to here but have maintained a love of the game played in their country of origin.

One of their newest players Isaac Akkabah is from Ghana when his love of the game started with kicking a ball around the paddocks with rocks marking out the goal.

“At the end of the day we’re all keen on the game and everyone is welcome,” he said.

The more obvious barrier in the past has been the perception of soccer as not quite the real deal when it comes to ‘football’.

Nick said a lot of barriers have been broken down there, too, over the past 14 years.

He said when the club first went up to play soccer at the Don Road Complex, playing on one of the ovals initially earmarked for Aussie Rules, the atmosphere wasn’t exactly welcoming.

“They pretty much thought we were idiots,” he said.

“Now we go there, the two football codes play at the same time and we mingle with the footballers. That barrier has been broken down,” he said.

“If we find a sport we can relate

to, the nationality barrier gets broken down and so do the cultural barriers,” he said.

This year will be significant for soccer around the world and in Healesville.

The World Cup will be played in Brazil and Healesville is moving into a new league which will provide greater competition and opportunities for

younger players to be seen by those at the elite level of the game.

The club, which has two men’s, one women’s and four or five junior teams, will play in the South East Victorian Football Federation League.

“Ultimately, it’s the premier league - the ants pants of soccer,” Nick said.

“It’s a great move for the club and

Grand polo spectacle

By KATH GANNAWAY THE Yarra Valley Polo Club does polo more than a little differently to the stereotypical image of the sport as a game for the rich and famous and celebrity spotting for the spectators.

The club which hosts the annual Flowerfield Cup and Coldstream Cup tournament at Coldstream brings polo to the people.

“It is a traditional grassroots club polo tournament so leave the Prada and Ralph Lauren behind, don an Akubra, pull up a hay bale and watch top quality chukkas,” invites club member Pricilla Gorton.

“It is a great opportunity to witness the adrenalin-fuelled sport without the pretensions that unfortunately overshadow it at times,” she said.

The club has hosted royalty, Australian and international polo champions over the years, however Ms Gorton says it has never lost its country charm.

The polo tournament has been revived in recent years to become an increasingly popular spectator event in the Yarra Valley with the locals descending on Flowerfield to cheer on the home teams.

Ms Gorton said it is a fantastic

opportunity for horse enthusiasts to find out more about the exciting and dynamic sport of polo and how to become involved.

She said the sport was often overlooked by young riders but that Yarra Valley Polo Club has players aged from 13 to 70 years, and, in a male-dominated sport, is well represented by females.

“There is a strong emphasis on family involvement,” she said.

“We have three generations of the cider-producing Kelly family playing on the same team.”

The tournament is a wonderful family day with a difference where visitors can take part in the divot stomping, relax with a picnic, or even book a marquee.

Activities for the kids include pony rides and face-painting and entry for children under 16 years is free.

Reminiscent of past tournaments, this year also sees the return of a vintage car display by the Rolls Royce Club.

Indigenous squad carnival success

By KATH GANNAWAY THREE young Yarra Valley cricketers represented the Yarra Valley last week in a national Indigenous tournament in Alice Springs.

Hayley Chandler from Healesville and Launching Place player Marlee Wandin are part of the first Victorian female squad playing in the Imparja Cup series.

Meanwhile Woori Yallock Agrade captain Dan Mock has made his debut in the tournament in the men’s squad.

Since the inaugural game in 1994, the Imparja Cup has grown from being a cricket match between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek to being a national cricket event that embraces the Indigenous culture and cricket.

The teams received their caps on the MCG from Eddie McGuire, Aunty Joy Murphy-Wandin and WNCL captain Kelly Applebee, before heading of for the tournament which ran from 9 to 14 February.

Hayley, who is 18 and plays for Ringwood Cricket Club and Marlee,

12, a member of the Yarra Valley Stars, both said the tournament was a wonderful opportunity.

“We’re playing against teams from all around Australia and we have just done a cricket clinic with children from the Amoonguna community, it’s probably one of the greatest experiences I’ve had,” Hayley said, speaking from Alice Springs on Thursday night.

Dan, 22, said he was one of two or three first-time players in the men’s squad with others who had played in the Imparja series for a few years.

“It’s an awesome experience all round but as an Indigenous person, getting to learn about the different cultures is pretty good,” he said.

Cricket Victoria’s Female Cricket Co-ordinator, Di Day from Seville, is travelling with the girls’ team. She said the Yarra Valley players were doing their bit as part of a great carnival.

Ms Day said it was part of Cricket Victoria’s pathways program, to show that there is something out there for girls who play.

She said the carnival helped to recognise Indigenous cricketers - as well as encourage more Indigenous players into the game.

Bringing home medals YARRA RANGES Athletes competed at the Victorian State Championships on the weekend, recording many outstanding results.

At the end of competition on Saturday, club athletes had earned two gold, one silver, three bronze medals alongside many personal bests.

Highlights were gold medals to Lateisha Willis (Under-15 women 200 metre hurdles) and Jack Videon (Under-20 men’s long jump).

The day started with an outstanding bronze medal to new club member Sam Gunther in Under-20 men’s triple jump followed by a dominant win over 200 metre hurdles by Lateisha Willis.

Jack Videon left it until his final jump to record his gold medal winning long jump.

At the same time that Jack was completing his final jump, Aiden Pace crossed the line for his 400-metre bronze medal.

Moments later Lily Peacock finished third in her Under-14 women’s 400 metres.

One of the most successful days at a state championship for the club was capped off with an outstanding silver medal to Nathan Hall in the Under-15 men’s discus event.

Sunday produced one silver and four bronze medals.

James Laven started the day’s medal haul with an exciting third place in the Under-15 men’s 3000 metres.

Lucas Taylor followed with a bronze in Under-20 men’s hammer throw matched later by his sister, Lee, in the Under-14 women’s hammer throw.

Molly Dixon confirmed a promising 800 metres career with a solid bronze in the Under-17 women’s 800 metres.

The medal haul was completed with a tense Under-15 women’s 90-metre hurdles silver medal for Lateisha Willis her second medal of the championships.

All placegetters automatically qualify for selection in the Victorian team to compete at the Australian Championships in March.

Little athletics club members have also been finalising the preparations for next weekend’s Eastern Region Athletics Championships.

A ‘choose your event’ program enabled athletes to pick the events best suited to their preparations.

TWO rounds ago, things looked pretty settled in YVCA’s DJ Strachan Shield as the top four sides had cleared away from the bottom four sides.

With the top four facing the bottom four in Round 11, many thought that with expected results the finals line-up would be settled.

Like all good sport though, nothing is certain and with two rounds remaining the final make-up of the final four and the form of its participants are still well and truly up in the air.

With excessive heat forcing the cancellation of day one action, Round 12 was reduced to one day cricket in a crucial day for finals fortunes.

On the back of an extraordinary turn in form and fortune, Yarra Junction has found itself perched inside the top four for the first time this season as they claimed another prized scalp - this time that of the top-placed Healesville.

With Healesville batting first, the Bloods never recovered from the loss of early wickets.

Healesville’s season with the bat has been built on strong early batting setting the tone, so when the blow torch was put on the visitors, they were unable to respond.

The useful swing bowling of Daniel Sharp (3/25) accounted for the early inroads, and despite a useful 27 not out from keeper Sam Watts, the Bloods could only manage 127.

Yarra Junction started their chase warily as chasing a total of that size meant there was no real pressure on the required run rate.

An even performance with the bat, highlighted by a substantial partnership between Quentin Hodgkinson (39) and Cam Spaulding (37) saw the home side to victory-a much deserved position in the top four in comfortable time.

With games against Hoddles Creek and Woori Yallock ahead, Yarra Junction will be confident of ensuring their first finals appearance in many seasons and making some significant noise when there.

Healesville will be keen to find some form after slipping from top spot on the back of three losses in the last four games.

Reigning premiers Seville are ominously hitting form at the right time of the season as they disposed of challengers Coldstream despite being put under some pressure across the afternoon.

Batting first, the Blues had a fight on their hands against inform Crocs openers Jarrod Bayliss (2/73) and Matthew Stark (2/54).

With an extremely deep batting lineup, the Crocs could not make significant inroads and eventually the home side cashed in on the back of fantastic knocks from Ranga Yasalal (40) and the muchmaligned Leigh Aitkins (67 n.o.) - the

pair pushing the score to a challenging 6/199.

Crocs brilliant opener Dan Adams has hit a purple patch with his form since Christmas, and if the visitors were to have any chance of chasing the total, he would need to have a big say.

A big say would be an understatement as Adams produced an innings that showcased all his brilliant strokeplay recording a brilliant 109.

Seville’s experience with the ball led

by Ishara Amarsinghe (2/46) ensured that Adams did not take the game away from the Blues and eventually the chase came to the last over.

With a dozen runs to chase, no one was backing against Adams to get the Crocs over the line.

Unfortunately for the Crocs, and the game, Adams was run out trying to gain the strike and with his departure, so too did the chances of the Crocs recording a remarkable victory with the visitors falling 10 runs short.

Both sides now enter the run home eager to consolidate home Semi Finals and offer another rematch of their classic 2011/12 Grand Final.

Seville once again looks to be the team to beat with a deep batting line-up backed up by a classy bowling outfit, but if the talented Crocs can find some form with the bat to support Adams, then the Crocs can be a wild card.

Woori Yallock hosted Mount Evelyn and kept their finals hopes alive while dealing a significant blow to the Rovers chances of securing a finals place.

Opening the game with the bat, the hosts found the going tough against some excellent new ball bowling from Kane Jones and Chris Anderson (2/25).

A gritty knock from Daniel Reid (38) ensured the Tigers had a base to work on, and despite regular wickets in the concluding stages to the innings some lusty hitting from the hosts’ lower order ensured Woori Yallock would reach a defendable 142 on a slow oval.

Despite the quick departure of their openers, Mount Evelyn looked to be well set at 2/64 in the 17th over.

As the exciting Gareth Fraser and captain Kane Jones (57) had seen off the challenge of opening bowlers Jackson Wright (2/31) and Simon Young, he had started their dismantling of the Tigers spinners.

As so often has been the case for Rovers this season, the departure of Fraser and Jones in quick succession put the visitors under immense pressure, and the pace of Wright combined with the uncanny wicket taking knack of spinner Stephen Morgan (4/33) the home side rolled through the Rovers for 115, despite a fighting knock from Dan Fraser (18).

a win against Healesville next round - it could set up a do-or-die final round match up against Yarra Junction.

Meanwhile, Mount Evelyn has difficult assignments against Seville and Warburton-Millgrove and needs wins against both if they are to have any chance.

Warburton-Millgrove also reignited their finals chances with a gritty win against a stubborn Hoddles Creek.

Hoddles Creek batted first and systematically compiled a significant total.

If there has been one criticism of the Wombats, it has been their inability to score freely and therefore score heavily.

This was rectified as the stroke play of experienced trio Brenton Derix (55), Mick Batten (47) and Jeremy Derix (46) consistently put pressure on the Burras and eventually saw the home side record a major score of 5/203 off their allotted overs. Experienced pair Adam Humphrey (2/36) and Luke Darwall (1/28) battled bravely, but could not contain the visitors.

In reply, the Burras innings mirrored that of Hoddles Creek.

In score friendly conditions, Warburton-Millgrove saw off the challenge of the exciting young Hoddles Creek quicks, and then went about successfully chasing the runs.

Like the Wombats, it was the talent and experience of the Burras batting line-up that would lead the way.

Contributions from captain Troy Murphy (55), Luke Darwall (43) and Jason Coghlan (38) led the home side to a significant moral boosting victory, scoring the runs with the fall of just three wickets.

Warburton-Millgrove now finds itself in the same position as Woori Yallock, however challenging games against Coldstream and Mount Evelyn make its task a little more difficult.

Hoddles Creek will be keen to post another victory and shape the finals before the season is out.
