Chamber launches awards

And the 2014 awards are shaping up to be the biggest yet, says Geelong Chamber of Commerce executive officer Bernadette Uzelac.

“The awards play a vital role in recognising and encouraging business excellence and community participation within the Geelong region,” Ms Uzelac said.

A SERIES of information sessions for businesses entering the Powercor Geelong Business Excellence Awards will be held throughout February at various locations including Geelong, Torquay and Bannockburn.

Big challenge for ‘little legs’ of mum Rosy

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN SHE claims it was a moment of madness but Hamlyn Heights mum Rosy Borland is sticking to her goal of climbing Africa’s highest mountain. “I saw the opportunity to climb Mt Kilimanjaro and I thought, ‘Why is it always the young people who get to do this?’ “So I signed up with a bit of a point to prove - more to myself than anyone else,� Rosy laughed.

But first the keen bushwalker and hiker is meeting a different challenge - raising $4000 for UNICEF as part of the climb.

With a dinner party, trivia night and ceramics sale already under her belt, Rosy is approaching the fund-raising summit after accumulating donations of more than $3000 already.

She hopes a monster garage sale will get her over the fund-raising line, leaving time to complete her training for the seven-day climb of the world’s highest free-standing mountain. “I’ll make the ascent as part of a group of 25 climbers, accompanied by various guides and porters.

Climbing the mountain involves walking five to seven hours a day, mostly uphill. “I love the feeling of being out there, challenging y o u r self in the natural environment.

You learn a lot about yourself - everyone should do it. “This trek will be a huge challenge for me, both physically and spiritually. I’m 54 and five foot nothing, so my little legs will have a lot of work to do to get up that mountain. “But by taking on challenges in our lives and stretching ourselves we become more in tune with the meaning of our existence.�

New call for coast ‘lock-up’

GREEN activists are seeking a total ban on new housing subdivisions along the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula as well as Moolap’s saltworks, Point Henry’s Alcoa site and Lake Connewarre’s shoreline.

Victoria National Parks Association (VNPA) has released a report calling for a new Geelong-Bellarine wetland state park, a merger of Barwon Coast and Bellarine Bayside committees of management and a ban on further Alcoa power station activity at Anglesea.

The Coast is Unclear report also called for surfing and indigenous groups to have key management roles at Bells Beach and for the prohibition of wind turbines at Apollo Bay and Johanna.

New coastal subdivisions should be disallowed between Eastern View and Altona and Torquay’s controversial Spring Creek should be left undeveloped, the report said.

Other recommendations included: extension of the Bells Beach precinct; a 50 to 100-metre buffer around Lake Connewarre to prevent shoreline development; transfer management of Buckley Park and coastal reserves in Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff from Geelong and Queenscliff councils to a new Barwon-Bellarine Coast Committee;

Resident Christine Brooks said a condition of Geelong council funding requiring transfer of park ownership to City Hall had raised concerns. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are a lot of concerned people here because they did not realise how big it will actually be,â&#x20AC;? Ms Brooks said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The park means a lot to many people in Ocean Grove because it was saved from developers years ago and people are worried that it could end up in developersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hands again. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The community consultation was not wide enough because many didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know about it.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Brooks said she had complained to Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell about the process behind the proposal.

By NOEL MURPHY THE LAST thing Torquay’s Paul Nigro expected to see on TV was his disguised wife running from the media outside Bali’s Sentosa resort.

Masquerading as Schapelle Corby, Corinne Nigro had news crews pursuing her through the streets of Seminyak this week as her girlfriends formed a clutch around her to keep them at bay.

Giggling and laughing, they managed to inject some frivolity into an otherwise non-event press conference as a media gaggle tried to interview people outside the resort.

Mr Nigro was flabbergasted watching the scene on national TV while holding down the fort back home.

“I was surprised, absolutely,” he said.

THE sadness of a tragedy almost a year ago is being softened as the communities of Mt Duneed and Winchelsea join forces in a family fun day.

The Morgan family lost wife and mother Michelle when she collapsed on her 28th birthday from a lung clot.

She died three days later without regaining consciousness.

Devastated husband Dale and their three young daughters were left behind.

Dale’s father, Geoff Morgan, said family connections in both communities led to them raising money for play equipment, a playroom and

GEELONG’S push for a $10 billion army contract is firing up, with the assistant defence minister visiting Geelong next month.

Federal MP for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said Stuart Robert’s visit would be a “fantastic boost” to the bid for the Land 400 combat vehicle project.

The 7 March visit would give regional leaders a chance to speak directly with Mr Robert, who has portfolio responsibility for the Land 400 project.

Ms Henderson said key department staff would accompany Mr Robert to brief the Geelong consortium on the project.

“This is an important opportunity for industry to gain a comprehensive understanding of how we can best push our case to become the home of this $10 billion manufacturing project.

While a decision on the awarding of contracts is a number of years away, the hard work must begin now,” she said.

“The visit will also allow Mr Robert to hear first-hand why our region is best-placed to deliver at least part of this exciting project.

“The Geelong region has the necessary physical infrastructure with the spare capacity to support the project. We have direct highway access, a freight sea port and are close to two major airports,” Ms Henderson said.

“The Geelong region’s mix of intellectual capital particularly in the automotive and engineering sectors, defence know-how and manufacturing experience makes it the perfect location.”

Ms Henderson said the project, to build new armoured-combat vehicles, could “revolutionise” Geelong.

Unions on warpath over threats

By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG unions will run a monthly campaign against the federal coalition’s royal commission into union corruption and proposed state labor laws, Geelong Trades Hall boss Tim Gooden has warned.

Mr Gooden said the first action would be a rally against Napthine Government anti-protest plans, intended to shut down “legitimate community voices”.

The Government wanted laws allowing unions to be sued for millions of dollars, he said.

“These new laws will be absolutely devastating.”

Mr Gooden also blasted the Abbott Government’s royal commission.

“What they really want to do is reduce the ability of unions to

“This is all a smear campaign to curb the ability of unions to mobilise community campaigns.”

Mr Gooden said existing laws already cover corruption.

Liberal “patron” Senator for Geelong Michael Ronaldson said the royal commission would overlook “day-to-day activities of honest trade union officials” to instead focus on “increasingly widespread claims of unlawful activity, corruption, kickbacks and collusion”.

Senator Ronaldson said the royal commission would be “able to go wherever the evidence leads it”.

He urged Labor to support the commission.

“Honest workers and honest unionists in Corio should not be ripped off by corrupt union officials,” Senator Ronaldson said.

“Honest local businesses should be able to get on with their work without fear of intimidation, corruption and standover tactics.”

Museum to ‘dig up’ torpedo boat A TORPEDO boat that guarded Melbourne against Russian or French attack in the late 19th Century is set to be exhumed from beneath the sands of Queenscliff.

HMVS Lonsdale is buried one metre deep on reclaimed land about 300 metres from the foreshore. Part of the vessel is in Queenscliff Maritime Museum

The Lonsdale, sister ship the Nepean, HMVS Cerberus and first-class torpedo boat Count-

ess of Hopetoun were part of a first line of defence for colonial Victoria.

The Lonsdale was obsolete by 1912 and withdrawn from service. She was eventually beached as a breakwater behind houses in Beach St. Harbour works in the 1930s led to a build-up of sand burying the Lonsdale.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN SIMONDS Stadium’s light towers are “works of art” that should be saved from becoming an “eyesore”, according to objectors fighting a council advertising plan.

Council has proposed advertising on the towers to help offset a $160,000 annual bill to connect the lights to the electricity grid.

But the proposal has attracted four objections, forcing council to amend the plan or send it to an independent planning panel for resolution.

Objectors said the light towers

“The light towers can be seen from many vantage points across the city but they have been reasonably well accepted because of their simple and clean but strong design.”

Planning portfolio holder Cr Michelle Heagney said council had decided to restrict the height of the advertising on the towers to 20 metres.

The limit would ensure the signage did not distract passing motorists or detract from the “aesthetic” of the towers, she said.

“Council is seeking to greatly expand the use of Simonds Stadium,

especially now that we have the ability to stage night events,” Cr Heagney said.

“Selling advertising space on the light towers provides an opportunity to off-set the costs associated with having capacity in the power grid.

“Any specific proposal for advertising signage will still be subject to a planning permit application at which point the scale, form and function of the signage will be assessed.”

Planning Minister Matthew Guy will appoint an independent panel to consider the proposal.

Miner’s disinterest fails to deter fracking protesters

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AN ANTI-fracking group is pushing ahead with local protests despite a miner with an exploration permit declaring it has lost interest in the area.

Frack Free Geelong spokesperson Elizabeth Packett said Lakes Oil’s loss of interest was no guarantee the region was safe from fracking.

“This industry has a habit of changing the name of what they do and hoping it fools people,” Ms Packett said.

“The only way to make the area safe from fracking is to remove their social licence and that’s what we’re continuing to do.”

Lakes Oil’s permit area stretches from Highton to Anglesea. The Independent revealed last year the company had conducted geological and geophysical studies in the region.

Ms Packett said the group would protest on Saturday by marking out a

section of the exploration zone with hazard tape.

“As we’ve seen from overseas and interstate, fracking poses serious threats to our health, drinking water, rivers, farmland and other industries, particularly tourism.

“We want to raise awareness of this issue ... by physically marking out an area where a potential gas field could lie,” she said.

“People will be shocked to learn it’s on the same land as private homes, businesses, churches, kindergartens, sports clubs, Deakin University and even Highton Cemetery.

“The state moratorium against fracking until June 2015 does not protect us from exploration drilling.

“The mining companies could start that any day and, if they find gas, you can be assured they’ll do everything they can to extract it.”

Ms Packett said the group was “pro-renewables and pro-green jobs rather than anti-fracking”.

Studies hope for arthritis victims

By NOEL MURPHY A RESEARCH breakthrough in Geelong could help millions of osteoarthritis sufferers.

Deakin University’s Dr Wren Greene has synthetically mimicked cartilage’s lubrication system and is investigating bacterial cellulose and other porous materials as cartilage replacements.

“Currently artificial joints have a finite lifetime, of 15 to 20 years, with the second replacement having about half that. The goal is to produce materials that can last 40 to 50 years,” he said.

Cartilage provides both lubrication and joint movement without compromising wear.

Dr Greene, an associate research fellow within Deakin’s Institute for Frontier Materials (IFN), said he had always wondered whether replicating the lubrication system was possible.

“The key to solving the puzzle was realising that we didn’t need to duplicate the entire system. What we needed was a few key aspects where everything was optimised, so, relatively speaking, it was quite simple.

“The challenge has been to get the material right, with the right kind of porosity and permeability and the right mechanical properties.”

‘Error’ behind red light fines

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A MOTORIST claims VicRoads changed lane markings after he complained about a fine from a notorious red light camera at a Norlane intersection.

But VicRoads is adamant the markings were changed when the red light camera was installed and that the intersection of The Boulevard and Melbourne was legally compliant.

The motorist, who did not want to be identified for work reasons, said the high number of infringements at the intersection was due to a “VicRoads mistake”.

He blamed line markings on the inside lane of The Boulevard, which was originally both a straight-through and right-turn lane.

The lane should have become right-turn only when the red-light camera was installed but VicRoads failed to make the change, the motorist said.

“Line markings override traffic signals, according to the act, but in this case the signals did not match with the markings.”

The motorist said alerted VicRoads more than two months ago.

Within weeks the line markings were altered, he said.

The inside lane of The Boulevard is now right-turns only, with new dotted lines making it a rightturn slipway and the straightthrough arrow painted over.

The motorist said VicRoads had a duty to publicly apologise for the error and offer refunds to fined drivers.

Gripes go to parliament THE notorious Norlane intersection where red-light camera fines have blown out to more than $400,000 a quarter is ringing alarm bells with authorities.

Geelong MP Ian Trezise has used parliament to raise the issue, which has also come to the attention of the Road Safety Camera Commissioner.

Mr Trezise said motorists had contacted him with complaints about being unfairly fined. He asked for an investigation.

Roads Minister Terry Mulder told parliament that drivers who entered the intersection on an amber light were not fined.

“Due to an increase in the number of vehicles using The Boulevard, VicRoads has identified a need to improve traffic flow at this particular intersection.

“VicRoads will be making

adjustments to the operation of this intersection in the coming weeks that will include new lane configurations, line marking and changes to the phasing of the traffic lights.

“The right-turn arrow is on a different phase time from the traffic lights going straight and it could be that that is confusing some drivers.”

The Road Safety Camera Commissioner’s spokesperson said drivers with infringements from the intersection were welcome to come forward.

“With that level of community concern we’d be happy to investigate the intersection but we need drivers to present their information to us.”

“I’m all for road safety, especially with Geelong’s appalling record, but I bet the fines are dropping now the proper ground signage is in place.”

VicRoads regional director William Tieppo said the straightthrough arrow had been ground off in July 2012 when the camera was installed, leaving only a right-turn arrow.

Mr Tieppo said the right-turn arrows were upgraded and a slip lane added in October 2013.

VicRoads would make adjust-

ments to the intersection “in the coming weeks”, including new lane configurations, line-marking and changes to phasing of the traffic lights, he said.

Fines at the intersection skyrocketed after the installation of the red light camera, the Independent revealed in December.

The camera slugs motorists $400,000 every three months, according to the Justice Department, with motorists fined $361 and given three demerit points.

By NOEL MURPHY OPPONENTS to plans that would rezone Newtown for fourstorey housing are trying to set up a $25,000 fighting fund against the State Government-changes.

Newtown Action Group is asking for individual pledges of $500 to defend their neighbourhood at an independent panel hearing they expect to adjudicate on the rezoning in April.

The group said City Hall’s support for the Melbourne-style density zoning threatened “the identity of Geelong” and the “heritage, amenity and character” of its neighbourhoods.

Group convenor Vicki Baensch said the residents needed funding to commission professionals for the hearing fight.

“We’re asking for a pledge of $500 or more from all Newtown residents. We hope to raise $25,000, which we expect will cover the costs of the experts.

“We’ve spoken to the professionals and gathered their advice as to how we best represent ourselves at the panel hearing. This will involve town planners who will conduct a detailed review of relevant planning policies et cetera,” she said.

“The most important part of the panel hearing is the expert witness statement and presentation of evidence in chief.

“Finally, we can choose to engage a lawyer/barrister as an advocate to ensure our case stays on track and puts us in a convincing position.”

The action group has lodged a 350-signatory petition with City Hall arguing the C300 four-storey rezoning is at odds with council’s own guiding rationale and inconsistent with the intent of the state zoning on at least four grounds.

The group has met councillors Bruce Harwood and Stretch Kontelj to state its case and seek advice.

Cr Harwood said “sensitive” issues like the rezoning became “magnified” in state election years.

“In this case, a portion of the community is having a very vigorous say in what they think is best for their neighbourhood. It will be interesting to see how it is viewed by council and the government.”

The community has long called for fewer trucks travelling through Central Geelong to create a more pleasant environment for pedestrians, al fresco diners and shoppers.

Three community information sessions are being held to run through the restrictions and what this means for Central Geelong traders, residents and the trucking industry.

In response, a trial starts Monday 3 March restricting trucks from travelling through the Central Geelong area unless they are making deliveries.

The trial aims to reduce the number of trucks using Malop St as an east-west thoroughfare as this is the heart of the city with the most pedestrians. The goal is a more pleasant and safe city centre.

The trial will run for six months from Monday 3 March.

Trucks are encouraged to avoid Malop St and travel on routes further south. Please see the map below with the shaded red area depicting no go areas for trucks. Note: trucks making deliveries to Central Geelong are not affected.

Making money over common sense

Limits for discussion I AM concerned readers of the 31 January Independent might believe that Great Ocean Road Coast Committee (GORCC) wants or is trying to enforce beach parking time limits.

No plans are currently in place for time limits of any kind. GORCC has simply published a discussion paper for comment in order to stimulate conversation around how people get to the coast.

The discussion paper has been created so GORCC can learn more about what the wider community believes the issues are, if there are any, and what actions, if any, they would like to see taken.

A range of management options are put forward as thought-starters for discussion, as the title of the document suggests. ‘Do nothing’ is also listed as a potential management option, as is ‘provide disabled parking spaces’ and ‘provide park and ride systems’.

GORCC seeks input from all coastal users on this important issue. Feedback on the discussion paper will be considered in the development of a draft, high-level strategy to GORCC’s sustainable management of transport on and to the coast in the long-term.

Denial unsustainable ALAN Barron has again tried to find evidence climate change is exaggerated, this time quoting “independent analyst Steven Goddard” (Letters, 7 February).

When I searched his Wordpress site I found that Steven Goddard also provided “evidence” that Barack Obama was ineligible to be US President because he was born in Kenya and argued the Holocaust began with gun control.

Meanwhile, the World Meteorological Organisation states unequivocally that 13 of the 14 warmest years in history all occurred this century.

We swelter through multiple 40C days when the average is supposed to be one a year and bushfires are now regular. Climate change is real but also poses an opportunity for Geelong. We are blessed with an abundance of renewable energy and still have the manufacturing expertise to make our own wind turbines and components for solar thermal.

We have the community networks and resilience to work together locally to reduce our global footprint. Our choices can make Geelong a vibrant community and a centre of clean green jobs.

Thanks for sighting reports I THANK locals in the Surf Coast/Otways catchment for reporting to me over many years their sightings of Tasmanian tiger and puma/panther-like animals.

My Freedom of Information requests regarding these animals have revealed reported sightings in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland as well as a New South Wales government attempt to locate a Blue Mountains black panther and Queensland’s attempt to trap a panther near Cairns in the 1990s.

My Freedom of Information requests have also revealed that the Victorian government’s fisheries and wildlife departments attempted to trap a marsupial Tasmanian tiger in South Gippsland in 1973.

I have no doubt that in 1998 I videotaped a Tasmanian tiger in South Gippsland - see You Tubeand have captured infrared trail camera footage of sambar deer in a coastal location for the first time in mainland Australia.

AGAIN Bellarine Bayside has given a typical response (Letters, 7 February) regarding management of the foreshore amenities blocks at Portarlington.

Same old excuses, just throw in the words “limited funds” and, no, we can’t afford any seating so don’t even consider such First World luxuries.

As a recent arrival at Bellarine Bayside, the acting chief executive officer might be unaware that his reply was similar to what we received when this issue was raised in 2009.

Little has changed, except that on that occasion Bellarine Bayside did concede to remove green slime then growing up the walls of the shower recesses. While this organisation goes out of its way to please caravan park customers, it treats everybody else with contempt.

As it has publicly stated at annual general meetings, Bellarine Bayside will continue to give priority to the caravan parks because that is where its income comes from.

This is extraordinary given that Portarlington has a popular public beach attended by thousands during summer months. Especially when it and the surrounding area host hundreds of competitors in major sports events with huge numbers of followers.

Many people have commented that the Portarlington beachfront and its lack of facilities are put to shame by almost any beach along the eastern Australian seaboard.

Whatever happened to our civic pride?

because, in VicRoads’ opinion, going through a red light was a serious offence, so a warning was not applicable.

This begs the question about revenue-raising against common sense and fairness when you can be fined for making a split-second decision of 1.2 seconds and not given a second chance.

I am all for road safety and the need to reduce the road toll but penalising people for money-making over common sense shows why the public has become dubious about the placing and purpose of these cameras.

I READ with interest the Independent’s recent stories on the red-light camera on the corner of The Boulevard and Melbourne Rd, Norlane.

My son was caught going through the right-turn arrow with an elapsed time of 1.2 seconds. He received a fine of $361 and three demerit points.

As he had never had a fine before, we decided to ask for a review of the decision based on the fact the right-turn arrow allows little time to cross a fourlane road.

Because my son had not broken any road rules in more than three years of probationary driving, we believed a warning

FinallyFriday Glenda’s art of glass

By MICHELLE HERBISON A CRAFTY concept combines Clifton Springs bead artist Glenda MacNaughton’s passion for bead-work with a desire to fight social justice and environmental issues.

MacNaughton spends hours painstakingly creating works of artistic jewellery using bead-weaving and lamp-work techniques, basing her Dax Designs Bead Art around charitable themes.

“I tend to build little collections around issues,” she explains.

“I did a series called The Endangered Collection, which was abstract images of the eyes of endangered animals with patterns around them. Ten per cent of sales go to the World Wildlife Fund.

“My Fab Femme beads are inspired by the suffragettes who fought for women’s rights to vote.”

MacNaughton said the intricate art of bead-weaving existed within most cultures, dating back at least 3000 years.

Concentrating her necklace, bracelet and earring designs around particular themes helped provide creative energy while she researched her topics.

“Having a meaning to it is really important for me, otherwise I feel it’d be

an indulgence,” she laughed.

MacNaughton will exhibit at the 2014 Drysdale Festival of Glass expo this Sunday, launching a collection of bead-woven works featuring sea stars, with proceeds going to marine sanctuary work.

“I’m also working on a little collection of what I call Pots of Ancient Wisdom they look like ancient perfume bottles. I’ll be launching those at the festival.”

A song, Ancient Wisdom, written for Geelong women working against violence inspired the title, with 10 per cent of funds being donated to the town’s Reclaim the Night event.

The glass expo will feature more than 50 local and visiting exhibitors with a diverse array of glass arts and crafts between 10am and 4pm at Christian College, 40 Collins St, Drysdale.

“I’ve been involved with the festival from the start. It’s a good way to start to link with other like-minded creative souls,” MacNaughton reflected.

Self-taught Barbara scratches out the detail MARSHALL wildlife artist Barbra Gleeson’s digital camera snapped away as a 60-odd herd of elephants plodded within 10 metres of her safari tour group.

“I’ve never seen anything quite as good as that. It’s just wonderful how they look after the little ones, they keep them in the middle,” Gleeson recalled.

“Then down behind them was this great big bull keeping his eye on the females.”

The eye-opening encounter with nature was a highlight of Gleeson’s four trips to Africa in recent years.

The retired hairdresser has taken to producing strikingly realistic graphite and coloured pencil sketches and scratchboard artworks depicting the African animals from her travel photographs.

“There’s nothing quite like seeing the animals in their natural state,” she said. “The cycle of life is amazing.”

Devoid of creative challenges after giving up her hairdressing career, Gleeson focused her energies on creating artwork.

“I used to paint oils in the late

’70s and early ’80s but I didn’t have much time for it with three children when I was young,” she explained.

“When I was hairdressing there was always a creative challenge there. Now I have to feed my soul and do something creative.”

The self-taught artist described herself as a “realist” who enjoyed the challenge of producing fine detail.

“I really do like a photographic image. We’ve got some beautiful animals - I don’t think I can do a better job than the big fellow upstairs did,” she laughed.

Gleeson creates her scratchboard works on purpose-designed boards of white clay sprayed with black ink, etching images into the clay with a scalpel.

“You always do your sketch first because you can’t afford to make a mistake on a scratchboard. It’s on a black background and I can choose to leave the image white or I can colour with ink as I did for the giraffe.”

Gleeson is among local artists featured in Art @ Wintergarden’s Little Gems Exhibition until 24 February.

Online uni course in dementia care UNIVERSITY of Tasmania’s Australia-first degree in dementia care is helping meet one of the country’s biggest public health challenges.

A new case of dementia is diagnosed every six minutes in Australia, with the rate increasing.

Managing dementia and its symptoms is difficult for families, carers and the public health system.

The new University of Tasmania degree gives students the knowledge, skills and confidence to understand and care for people with dementia.

The fully online Bachelor of Dementia Care course is available nationally and internationally to anyone seeking a greater

understanding of caring skills to deal with the condition.

The course is available through the university’s Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre. Enrolled nurse Darelle plans to apply skills she learns in the course this year to her workplace.

“I’m passionate about best-practice in dementia care.

There’s no cure yet, so for now we must focus on giving sufferers quality of life. HECS scholarships are also available for 2014, so my study will be free.”

New ways to solar savings “THE NEW age in domestic and commercial solar power has arrived”, says New Generation Solar’s Tom Mikac.

“With the feed-in tariff as low as it is, the boom time of getting rid of your power bills is now a distant memory.

“Selling power from your solar back to the grid just doesn’t make economic sense.”

Mr Mikac says most households only need enough solar power to cover daytime usage, which is generally around 6-8Wh. “Using this approach, you’re maximising your savings at 32c/kWh and not overcapitalising by selling it back to your electricity retailer for 8c/kWh,” he advises.

“It often pains me when people are told they need a 5kW system where, under the right advice, a 2kW system would be far-more cost-effective”.

New Generation Solar now also offers battery storage systems with life spans of up to 16 years and beyond.

“Now your solar system can provide power during the day and store the excess power for use at night,” Mr Mikac says.

“By tailoring systems to each household’s normal usage, the possibility of not have a power bill is back.

“Even if you get a system that might not cover all your usage, we have clever systems to sell your power at the cheaper off-peak rate overnight and store it for when you need it in the morning when prices are highest.”

Commercial premises can also benefit, with New Generation Solar incorporating systems including batteries into industrial applications for significant power savings.

Leopold Sportsmans Club is rapt with its substantial investment in solar power last year.

Manager Ray McPhee says New Generation fitted the club with several energy-saving devices, including LED lighting, sensors and smart switches connected to a solar system.

“The New Generation Solar guys were fantastic in relation to guiding us through the whole process,” Mr McPhee says.

“They gave us an initial walk-through assessment, an in-depth energy audit and advice on the newest technologies. Then they installed it without any interruptions to the club’s operations.”

Mr McPhee says the project went beyond just solar power.

“We wanted to be sure our energy consumption was as low as it could be as well. Harnessing the sun for power was not our major factor - using it wisely was” The investment will pay for itself in four years, after which all savings go back into the club.

Clio shows tidy value

By EWAN KENNEDY AIMED at those who want the looks, but not the engine performance - or expense - of the spectacular Renault Clio RS 200, a new model called the Renault Clio GT 120 will be introduced to Australia in April.

The numbers in the Clio name indicate the engine output in horsepower - the Europeans don’t use kilowatts, probably because hp gives bigger numbers than kW. The drop in power from the 200hp (147kW) of the RS to 120hp (90kW) by the use of a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine in the GT in place of the 1.6 turbo-petrol in the RS will obviously have a significant effect on performance.

It’s not all bad news, though, because the suspension has been worked over by Renault Sport Technologies.

The front springs and dampers are respectively 40 per cent and 30 per cent stiffer, while the bump stops have been adapted accordingly.

Sounds nice, but we won’t have a chance to drive and comment on the new Clio for a couple of months.

The Clio GT 120 uses a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Drivers can choose between a number of power steering calibrations and accelerator pedal and dual-clutch automatic transmission mappings. In ‘Sport’ mode, acceleration is more responsive and gearshifts are sharper.

Inside, the sport seats have specific upholstery with GT-branded headrests.

The upper part of the dashboard features a speckled grey finish, as well as grey trim highlights. The two fixed gearshift paddles are mounted behind the leather-trimmed sports steering wheel.

Justin Hocevar, the managing director of Renault Australia, said: “We have been delighted by the successful launch of the award-winning Clio in Australia and we are confident the Clio GT will add a new and very appealing dimension to the range.

“The Megane range was the first in Australia to introduce the Renault Sport-created GT versions and they have already developed a loyal following.

“Australia is a strong market for sporty models and the new Clio GT is aimed at a customer looking for a slightly sportier driving experience than the standard Clio,” Mr Hocevar said.

The new Renault Clio GT will go on sale in April 2014 and full pricing and specifications will be released then.

IndySport Cats aim to shore up deserved finals spot GEELONG Cricket Club suffered its first loss since the Christmas break when Melbourne proved too good last weekend.

Bowling first, Geelong struggled for penetration into the Melbourne batting line-up as a series of partnerships throughout Saturday and Sunday ensured the Cats a hefty target.

After some honest toil by all the bowlers, Justin McPhee finished with the best figures of 2/32 before Melbourne declared on 7/354.

The Cats started brightly in reply with Khalid Sawas (44) playing the anchor role for two hours.

At 4/230, star batsman Aaron Finch (111) was at the crease and the game was in the balance.

However, a middle-order collapse in which four wickets fell for just seven runs put paid to Geelong’s chances, with the Cats eventually dismissed for 266.

Tomorrow the Cats host HawthornMonash University and, with just two games remaining, a win could shore-up a deserved finals spot.

In Geelong Cricket Association, with just two games remaining before finals only two sides are fighting for the last spot in the top six.

Geelong West holds sixth with 34 points despite a shocking loss last round when it failed to chase down Lara’s 100. The Rams were all out for 70 in reply in a game they might well rue in a month’s time.

But since a victory in the Twenty20 final on the Australia Day public holiday a new energy has emerged at King Lloyd Reserve, with two wins from the past two starts.

The Frogs’ draw is no easier though, as they take on ladder-leader North Geelong in a must-win game.

It’s Meredith and Lethbridge that have the most to lose here, as a loss will almost certainly end both their seasons.

Anglers feel heat on sharks, tuna, flatties CASEY Greet headed out into 70m of water directly out from Port Phillip Heads on Saturday hoping for a shark.

After only five minutes of laying berley his 24kg game outfit screamed off with a big fish.

Nearly an hour later Casey had alongside a mako shark estimated at 250kg, which, given it was way too big, he let loose.

Large numbers of stripey tuna offshore from Lorne to Phillip Island could explain the build-up of sharks. However, the stripies can be extremely fussy feeders, often taking only tiny baitfish lures and plastics.

Saturday night was ideal for the rocks at Black Rock, with Garry Welsh catching his bag limit of fish to 1.3kg on squid strips.

Salmon remained a prime target in and around The Rip. Surface action became more consistent over the past week, with trolling working well but casting small soft plastics into the action even better.

Dane Veldhuis was among anglers laying berley around the entrance to Swan Bay. He was rewarded with four flathead to 3.5kg along with tailor, gummy shark and whiting.

Neil Croker also caught quality flatties at Swan Bay, catching six between 50cm and 65cm in a three-hour session along with a nice bag of garfish.

Gordon Menzies fished the deep water off St Leonards where gummy sharks were on the bite.

Gordon’s catch included a magnificent 12.4kg gummy, with all his fish taking fresh squid earlier in the day off Edwards Point.

Troy Farnsworth drifted the inshore grass beds off Portarlington for a catch of a dozen flathead to 58cm on soft plastics.

Chris Pitman had success on snapper while casting soft plastics in the shallow water near Point Wilson. The water was so shallow he could see the fish as they hit his lure, with most of the snapper between 35cm and 45cm.

Some of the best whiting action was in the area between Bird Rock and the quarries. Pippies were the preferred bait, with the fishing generally best close to sunset.

The same area also hosted plenty of salmon action on the surface.

Drifting the Hermsley spoil grounds produced plenty of small snapper and a few around 40cm.

Blue bait worked but soft plastics accounted for bigger numbers of fish.

St Helens hosted an influx of extremely small bait-picking snapper that drove anglers crazy.

The few who fished well after dark caught bigger specimens, some nudging 1.5kg.

Terry Holt spun the rocks at North Shore for catches of pike to 90cm. His best lures were small bibbed models, such as Rapala XRaps and Zerek Minnows, especially when fished in the two hours leading up to dark.

Troy Cunningham fished soft plastics from the sandbar inside the grammar school lagoon where he caught a variety of species including flathead, pike, salmon and snapper. Troy said the best fishing was on the run-off from high tide.

The Barwon River continued producing carp on corn and bread baits between Fyan’s and Queen’s parks. Late afternoons have been best.

Good numbers of redfin were grassed from the Barwon River from Queen’s Park all the way to Ceres. Lures have worked best, with bait anglers needing to catch either minnow or shrimp for good results.

Daniel Cooper has been spending plenty of time at Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree where redfin over 1kg and trout close to 2kg have been biting. Daniel used shallow-running bibbed lures, with his favourite a Nories Laydown Minnow.

Few anglers fished West Barwon Reservoir where Kevin Martin said the fishing has been good.

He used gold-coloured Tassie Devils for catches of trout up to 1.5kg late in the evenings.

Kevin said the right-hand end of the main wall was best but anglers should be wary of snakes.

This weekend’s late afternoon tides will be ideal for snapper on soft plastics on the outer-harbour spoil grounds. Expect a feed of flathead as well.

Surf anglers targeting salmon should hit the rock platforms between Lorne and Wye River from 11am to mid-afternoon.
