“It also mirrors the decline in business and agricultural profitability over the past three years.

“In simple terms it means Tenterfield is 21 per cent less desirable than it was three years ago.”

THE value of land in Tenterfield Shire has collapsed, losing over 21 per cent of its value over the past three years.

The Valuer-General’s report on land value has stripped $193 million from the shire.

The 2010 valuation was $911 million, while the 2013 valuation says the shire’s land is worth $718 million.

The overall land value in NSW

went up 2.56 per cent over the last 12 months, Tenterfield had the biggest loss in the state - 10.02 per cent for the 12-month period.

Mayor Peter Petty said he was “a bit surprised and not surprised” by the valuations.

“I’m a bit surprised because I know rural properties, especially within a 10km radius of Tenterfield have been very much in demand,” Cr Petty said.

From front page Mr South said the decline in the cattle industry must be added to the Valuer-General’s reasons for the decline - recent floods and high development and subdivision costs.

He said lower prices and the massive increase in invasive native woody weeds has caused the cattle industry’s downturn, but agricultural profitability is largely out of locals’ control.

“We need to make the shire more people-friendly and affordable,” he said.

“We need a zero tolerance of crime. We need to make newcomers and visitors more welcome, just smile and say g’day. We need to support local business and local business needs to support us by being competitive, friendly and professional.”

Mr South said although the decline is not due directly to council actions they need to take a leading role in a recovery.

“The cost of living in the Tenterfield Shire must be reduced, although the general residential rate is low, the rates and charges combined are very high $230 more than Glenn Innes, with big increases for recycling and dam upgrade in the near future.”

Mr South said that given the decline in land values in the shire it is very unlikely the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribuna (lPART) will grant the full rate rise being sought by council.

“Even if they do it is unlikely council will implement it due to the hardship it will cause.

“The council needs to abandon its application for a rate increase. They also need to upgrade infrastructure.

“Some would say this is contradictory but it can be done with efficiencies.”

OPPONENTS of Tenterfield Shire Council’s proposed rates hike have regrouped and held out a conciliatory hand to sitting councillors.

Formerly the Tenterfield Rates and Anti-amalgamation Forum (TRAAF), the group is now known as the Tenterfield Progress Association (TPA) and they have applied to NSW Fair Trading to convert the association to an incorporated body.

Founding members, president Robert Walker, vice-president Richard Holland and secretary/treasurer Ian Bardon are requesting “maturity” after the sometimes bitter debate over council’s campaign to seek a Special Rates Variation (SRV).

Mr Walker wrote to all councillors, offering what he described as “an olive branch” after the sometime acrimonious rates debate.

“I thought perhaps you would agree that this may be a good time to start a more conciliatory and profes-

sional relationship and put the past behind us,” Mr Walker said.

“We are here for the long term and have the prosperity and development of the shire at heart, just like you do.”

Mr Walker goes on to request details of how each councillor voted on the rates issue.

“The difficulty we are having in getting the confirmed voting of individual councillor votes on the SRV is a matter of deep concern and divide,” he said.

“These are the matters we need to repair. The facts are that the community is entitled to know how their councillor votes - how else can we determine if he/she is worth our vote for a second term or not?”

As TRAAF the group said that if the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal approved council’s application in full, rates will increase by over 80 per cent in the next decade.

The TPA expects a decision on its application for incorporation with a week or so.

Pilots prepare to fuel up WARWICK aerodrome will be set for more activity with the installation of an aviation fuel facility.

Southern Downs Regional Council on Wednesday approved a $22,000 allocation to cover the first 12 months of operation of the refuelling facility.

If the trial is a financial success, the council will investigate a similar facility for Stanthorpe Aerodrome.

Councillors were told the lack of a fuel facility “has been a significant obstacle to future development and servicing of the existing users.”

The aerodrome is currently used by private aircraft, some fly in, fly out mining workers, a flying school, gliding club and Australian Air Force cadets.

The Army School of Aviation and the Royal Flying Doctors Service use it for training.

Water bombing aircraft also battle bushfires in the region from the aerodrome and new water tanks have been installed to assist in firefighting operations. Racing dragsterstyle cars are also expected to use the facility.

The Warwick Flying Club has asked council to construct the facility and run it in a partnership agreement.

Council will train two staff to manage the refuelling facility, with cost built in to the retail sale price of the aviation fuel.

Accessible only through credit card payments, there will be no outstanding debts to chase.

“It is always special to win recognition for my songwriting and it was up against some great writers,” she said.

“I look forward to singing my new songs down here next year and I know the horse crowd are gonna love them. There’s even a new Warwick Rodeo song.”

THE Tenterfield Progress Association (TPA) has called on the Tenterfield Shire Council to state whether it will amend its rates policy in the light of a massive reduction in the value of land in the shire.

The Valuer-General has calculated that land values have fallen by more than 21 per cent in the last three years.

TPA vice-president Richard Holland said the valuation of land is heavily relied upon for the calculation of rates - so much so that the official valuation is printed on each rates notice.

“Will the council then agree that had the value of our collective lands increased 21 per cent, a correspondingly steep increase in rates would have been seen?

“Given then the current slump, by how much can we expect our rates to fall?”

Mr Holland asked whether the council will defer, or scrap altogether, its application for a Special Rates Variation (SRV).

“Does the council consider the ‘strong decrease’ in commercial and rural property values to be evidence of a recession?

“And if so, does the council propose to decrease rates on these property zones in order to give the local economy a boost in tough times?”

Mayor Peter Petty said he did not think the new valuations will affect the shire’s application for an SRV. “We’ve taken this on board, and we’ll deal with it as we work along,” Cr Petty said.

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council will shut off water supply in parts of Warwick for three to five hours on Sunday, 2 February to conduct urgent maintenance works.

Water and Wastewater Manager Tendekai Mapeza said mice had created extensive damage to the switchboard at the Warwick Water Treatment Plant. The areas affected will be Tooth Street, Bracker Road, Warwick Industrial Estate and Locke Street (south) for three to five hours.

CHARLIE Rowe is a man on a mission. Not the old missions where Indigenous Australians were herded for the convenience of Europeans - he’s on a thoroughly modern mission to take his people forward.

Mr Rowe knows that parents lead by example. That’s why he runs Strong Fathers, Strong Families - a program encouraging Indigenous males to play an active role in family life and to set an example for their children.

“The Strong Fathers, Strong Families program is to promote the role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dads, pops and uncles to be healthy role models and engage fully in the child’s life as early as possible,” he said.

“It’s engaging with one another and sharing each other’s journeys of fatherhood.”

The program, run under the auspices of Carbal Medical

Centre, comprises six sessions of three hours in a “yarning circle” format of eight to nine participants of mixed ages.

Some will be young men who are about to be or have just become fathers; the middleaged who have experience of fatherhood; and elders.

“Elders were brought up in that Stolen Generation time, so it’s totally different to where we are now,” Mr Rowe said..

From understanding the milestones in a child’s life to helping out around the house to not smoking around children, the program is about positive lessons in life.

“It’s not about dads being bad parents, it’s just giving them an extra bit of education or tools to be a better role model,” Mr Rowe said.

“Kids see what mum and dad are doing, and if mum and dad are doing things that are positive, they’ll know that and accept that and hopefully carry

INGLEWOOD’S Australia Day celebrations featured an array of celebratory activities.

These included a sausage sizzle breakfast, an on-the-spot rissole making competition, a best damper competition, Open House viewing of the Inglewood Tobacco Museum and a separate display of trucks and vintage cars in the street.

The Australia Day address was given by Australia Day Ambassador, retired Professor Julie Campbell. Prof Campbell’s distinguished career spanned 40 years as a professional research scientist and a recognised world leader in the cell biology of cardiovascular diseases.

She said the day was one on which to celebrate all the good things about Australia, the people, the democracy, the freedom, the mateship, the enjoyment of life and love of sport.

Prof Campbell then presented the local Australia Day Awards.

The Citizen of the Year is Marie Pietsch of Inglewood for her many years of exemplary voluntary work in many and varied sections of the community.

Other winners: Cultural Award for an individual or group: Inglewood State School Music Group; Sports Administrator or Coach: Inglewood Swimming Coach Ben Wells; Senior Sports Award: Jamie Scott of Texas; Junior Sports Award: Chloe Fenwick of Texas.

The Community Event of the Year was “Torture in the Border” a group founded five years ago to raise funds to benefit children’s sports.

ALAN Payne has an incredible passion for the volunteer staff of the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) and for his role in providing safety from fire for the whole Southern Downs community. Alan is Group Officer of the Warwick District Area for QFRS. He joined the QFRS in December 1990 with the Freestone Brigade, becoming First Officer in April 2004. Alan is also the Group Officer for the QRFS Warwick Group, the Deputy Fire Warden for the five fire warden districts and the Freestone Rural Fire Brigade treasurer. During the 2010/11 flood events Alan provided wonderful support to disaster operations and this helped the Local Disaster Management Group enormously. Alan’s dedication to the safety of his community and long involvement with the Rural Fire Brigade make him a worthy recipient of the Warwick Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award for 2014.

“In late November after much fund-raising a small group of ex-servicemen and their wives, for the fourth year in a row, dispatched 100 welfare parcels through the Australia Post and military system to our military personnel serving overseas during the Christmas period,” Warwick RSL sub-branch secretary/treasurer Gordon Neilsen said.

Mr Neilsen said the veterans have received nine email responses, from troopers to a brigadier.

To top it off the sub-branch received a parcel in the mail from Corporal M.J. Jay in Kabul, Afghanistan containing a plaque.

“A big thankyou for the welfare packages to the deployed soldiers, from the boys of Alpha and Bravo Patrol in Kabul, Afghanistan”, the plaque reads.

The plaque will go on display in the RSL

Sub-Branch memorabilia cabinet in the Warwick RSL Services and Citizens Memorial Club. A close look at the plaque indicates that 38 nations are or have supported the allied involvement in Afghanistan in some way.

Shelters sent TENTERFIELD Rotary hoped to raise money for five ShelterBoxes to assist victims of the Philippines super typhoon.

They finished up with enough money for seven of the disaster relief kits, thanks to the generosity of locals and successful charity auction.

The Tenterfield club punched above its weight, funding seven of the 750 shelters shipped to typhoon survivors. Each ShelterBox contains a tent, bedding, stove and basic items to house 10 people for up to 18 months.

People can seek legal advice on issues like credit and debt, criminal law problems, disputes with Centrelink, tenancy problems and discrimination.

Legal advice can also be sought over problems related to victims’ compensation, family law and care and protection matters among other things.

Clinics are held every fourth Tuesday of the month from 11am-2pm at Tenterfield Community Hub at 204 Rouse Street.

IT’S certainly a work in need of progress, but this 1923 International truck once filled a vital service for the town of Warwick.

Once a week, Charlie Wickham drove it from Brisbane at the stately speed of 22.5km/h (14mph) carrying beer. His offspring were later to start Wickham Freight Lines.

“This was his second truck,” Charlie’s grandson, Syd Wickham, said.

The truck still runs, although not on the road, and Syd was happily driving it around Allora Showgrounds ahead of the weekend’s heritage festival.

“It’d be the oldest International truck here, I’d reckon,” he said.

The vehicle left family ownership for some years until Syd’s father bought it back in 1949 or 1950. He spends his time in Goomburra restoring tractors and hasn’t quite got to doing up the International yet.

At 14 years of age, Syd was delivering wheat from Goomburra to Warwick, and without a licence. The local police sergeant was cranky when Syd was old enough to obtain a licence.

“I thought you had a licence, I’ve seen you driving around for years,” the copper said.

Those were the days.

Incident free WARWICK police praised crowd behaviour over the Australia Day long weekend.

Despite large numbers in town for the cricket carnival and other activities, and the fact they were “obviously enjoying themselves� there were no major incidents, police said.

Driver injured A BLACK Great Wall station wagon ran off the Cunningham Highway north of Warwick near McGees Road on 25 January at 2pm.

The vehicle rolled, injuring the female driver. She was transported to Warwick Hospital with lacerations to her arms.

Several children in the vehicle were uninjured. The vehicle sustained major damage. Police are continuing their investigations into the cause.

POLICE intercepted a vehicle driven by a 25-year-old Killarney man in Wood Street, Warwick on 25 January.

The driver registered a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .108 and was issued with a Notice to Appear in Warwick Magistrates’ Court.

STANTHORPE police inquiries continue after reports of three males throwing rocks into the pool at Murray Gardens Motel in Pancor Road. Police have viewed CCTV footage of the incident which occurred at 11.30pm on 25 January.

The same motel came to police attention on 27 January when a group of young males and juveniles were caught allegedly trespassing.

Two 17-year-olds were issued with Notices to Appear.

Four juveniles will be cautioned for the same offence.

No licences WARWICK police caught three unlicensed drivers within the space of two days. On 26 January a 42-year-old male was arrested for unlicensed driving on Mountside Road on 26 January.

A 37-year-old Warwick man was issued with a Notice to Appear after being caught driving without a licence on Victoria Street, Warwick at 3am Monday.

At 9.50am the same day, a 31-year-old Warwick man was caught driving without a licence on Wallace Street.

Teen trouble POLICE detained an intoxicated 17-year-old male for obstructing traffic in Talc Street, Stanthorpe on Sunday, 26 January at 6.30pm.

He was issued with an infringement notice regarding public nuisance and obstructing police.

POLICE divers searched the Condamine River behind a former Bandidos outlaw motorcycle clubhouse in Warwick late last week.

They found a dirty laundry basket, but failed to find any of the bikies’ “dirty laundry� as evidence in their crackdown on the gangs.

Police divers also dragged out an old photocopy machine and a few old pieces of metal.

They also reported that the river bed behind the Grafton Street residence was littered with car parts.

Warwick police Detective Ryan Harmer could not reveal what the divers were seeking, but it wasn’t a body, he said.

What’s On An evening of song STANTHORPE’S Divas and Debutantes will present an eclectic evening of song on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 February.

THE art exhibition run as part of the Warwick Show will reemerge as Contrasts Art Show.

Prize money has been increased and the range of art categories has been updated to encourage entries from across the local community and surrounding areas.

There are 11 classes in total with new sections this year for printmaking, 3D Art, textile art, indigenous Australian art, and artists living with a

disability that impacts on their art creation.

Contrasts Art Show will begin with an opening night on 15 March at 6.30 pm, a week before the Warwick Show begins.

The theme for this year is Arabian Nights and groups and individuals within the community are combining their talents to make it a memorable evening.

Organisers say Josh Bryce, editor of U Beaut Aussie Utes, is on his way to Stanthorpe, camera in hand. Mr Bryce is reportedly looking for utes to photograph for his second book.

There will also be a secret celebrity country music legend as a judge.

After last year’s event was badly affected by rain and flooding organisers are hoping to top their best-ever muster of 43 Utes will muster at the Stanthorpe Show. 113804 utes.

I don’t know about you, but they are really what has kept me coming back after the first season. Then the second season that built steadily but was let down by a final episode that tried too hard to be suspenseful - until the final explosive moment!

However mid-way through the third series, Winners & Losers finally seemed to find it’s consistency and by the end of

friends about her knife wounds or how Jenny would cope after her abandoned wedding to Callum?

Heart! This is a show with a lot of heart and so it is easy to invest in the characters particularly as they have grown. And while it is a story of four women, at it’s heart has been the Gross family and in particular stand-out performances by comedians Denise Scott and Francis Greenslade as Trish and Brian Gross and

the year the humour (which was always pretty strong) nicely balanced out the drama without it all tipping too far into melodrama.

And while this is not as slick as Ten’s Offspring, there is enough heart to keep you coming back and switching on.

A good episode of Winners & Losers certainly beats another round of reality shows… hands down.

Politicians need to understand that in dumping people where they are not

welcome, is tantamount to misery for everyone.

People will not be played like chess pieces just to save the Great South East.

Unfair scheme THE latest (hair-brained) scheme being kicked about by the Queensland Premier Campbell Newman, is to settle new immigrants in country locations.

Will these unfortunates be given a choice or will they be forced to live in the far Outback where summer tem-

peratures soar into the 40s?

Employment hasn’t been given a thought, and we know the bush is dying from lack of enterprises as they flee those areas. Then there is the likely language problem and lack of marketable skills.

Will the newcomers have to stay on welfare for many years? At a time when Canberra wants to cut welfare; locating to the Outback doesn’t sound too viable.

The suggestion to settle immigrants in the Outback was thought up with as much intelligence as the bikie laws.

Jet-setter’s stopover shoot WITH Australia Day activities in adjacent towns and villages, numbers were down at the Inglewood SSAA Australia Day shoot.

Two new faces, Jamie Elliott and nephew Chris enjoyed the day with a handful of regulars. For Chris Elliott it was his first experience with a firearm.

Club guest Gills Rajan who hails from Kerala State in south western India and works in Kuwait, gave the day a real multicultural touch.

Gills was enroute to New Zealand and with a 36-hour Australian stopover decided to drive out to Inglewood to join the group for a shoot (as many international travellers are want to do!).

With such a small group there was plenty of practice and not a lot of competition.

The club did hold a muzzleloading five-target Seneca Run which was won by club stalwart Graham (Scruffy) Morgan.

Morgan proved too accurate for Anthony Badesso and international club guest Gills Rajan. Tailing that trio was club president Tom Donald.

With things returning to normal this weekend a big group is expected for - “clays all day” rimfire benchrest practice and pistol practice.

SUMMIT FOURS IT WAS an early start for Summit bowlers on Saturday with a 9am roll call for those in the Summit club fours.

The early start had little effect on Zel Zamprogno’s team, which managed a tight 22-20 win over the spirited Lindsay Hartley group in the first round.

In the semi-finals, A. Zamprogno, Lewis A. Mattiazzi and W. Thomas (15) narrowly missed a win, defeated by just one point by the McGlashan-led group who staged an impressive comefrom-behind win.

M. Surch, P. Zamprogno, D. Stanley and M. Sweeney (19) outlasted G. Mugridge, R. Newlands, B. Wilmot and L. Covill (18) in another thriller. Teams led by Zel Zamprogno and Mick Sweeney will battle it out in the final this Saturday.

Turkey triples were once again back in action last week thanks to organiser extraordinaire Alec Mattiazzi and his band of assistants. Bowlers should keep an eye out for this popular monthly event.

A reminder of some of the coming events at the Summit. Friday night twilight bowls; Saturday the final of the club fours and social bowls; Sunday Australia Day Bowls. District fours will be played on 1 February and the open two-bowl triples carnival on 23 February.

Past results: ON Sunday 19 January shooters were at the 500 Yard Range on a day where the wind came from behind and caused a fish-tailing effect as it blew up the range. The score for the only Target Rifle (Iron Sight) out of a possible 105 was Merv Bray who shot 89.3. Welcome back Merv after a short absence, Merv also returned with a new barrel in his rifle.

The scores for the F Class (Scope Class) out of a possible 126 were Beth Caskey 119.4, David Taylor 115.5, Barry Russell 113.3, Paul Findlay 109.3, Graham Eagle 108.2, Paul Reid 105.3 and Margaret Taylor 104.1.

Next Sunday 26 January we will be at the 600-yard range come along and try long range target shooting for a sport. It is a most interesting and a challenging sport where you can meet great people who are only too happy to assist.

SOUTHERN DOWNS RIFLE CLUB THE club was on the 600-yard range on Sunday on a very tough day with gusty wind that swirled about the range giving all those at the event a difficult time during their shoot.

The scores for the target rifle class (iron sights) out of a possible 105 were: Rob Bondfield 103.10, Terry Pearce 98.4, Chris Neave 94.4 and Merv Bray 82.2 - a great score from Rob Bondfield who hasn’t shot for some time. Welcome to Terry Pearce from Toowoomba.

The scores for the F class (scope class) out of a possible 126 were: F open Paul Findley 115.1, David Taylor 109.1 and Margaret Taylor 104.1. The scores for F standard were Beth Caskey 112.4, Bob Tyllyer 111.2, Barry Russell 111.2 and Graham Eagle 99.4. Bob Tyllyer won over Barry Russell on countback for their placing on the day.

The next event on 2 February will be on the 300-yard range.

The 300-yard range is a great range for those with .303 rifles to come along and test their skill.

BIG NUMBERS ON NEW GREENS LAST Saturday, players got to experience five of the new back nine greens for the first time in the Advanced Metal Products and R. and P. Bell’s Butcher Single Stableford and Orange Ball Event supported by Rob McConnell’s Golf Shop.

A stunning field of 103 players made it one of the best days the club has witnessed.

It was a ’Chris day out’ with Chris Hall winning the single stableford with 43 points ahead of runner-up Chris Hyne on 43.

Rundowns went to 37. Collecting pins for their efforts were Trevor King at 5, Chris Hynes 7, Alex McKinlay 9, Tony Kahler 11, Harold Byrne 13 and Joe Straatman 16. Birdies on the new greens went to Ross Bell on 12 and Geoff Hinze on 14.

This Saturday is a single stableford and Monday 27 is a single stableford.

The official opening for the new greens will be on the deck on 2 February, at 11am.

SOUTHERN CROSS BOWLS OUR first day back on the green proved to be very popular even though the hot weather was a bit of a deterrent. It was also nice to see a few visiting club members.

Coming up on 16 February will be the Open Carnival. This is self-selected, so members asked asked to organise their teams and put on the board.

Good bowling TENTERFIELD VETERANS GOLF A FIELD of 36 Veterans recently played a 4-Ball stableford event in hot and sunny conditions on 16 January.

John and June Augustson were the day’s trophy winners with 48 points. Runners- up were Rob Murphy and Ian Wade with 46 points on a count-back.

Yoga is on go YOGA classes resume on the Granite Belt today, Thursday 30 January, promising the health benefits of yoga practices, while a yoga class provides a wonderful opportunity to meet with like-minded people in a relaxed and nurturing space.

AUSTRALIA Day means so much too so many people and it was a special and rare treat for me to be invited to join in the celebrations at Woodenbong.

A chance meeting between the local publican, Tony Neylon and Queensland Cricket stalwart Lew Cooper saw the annual Woodenbong City versus Country game bolstered by the addition of a small crew of infiltrators.

Brad “Spud” Murphy an outstanding wicketkeeper/batsman and a fulltime cricket coach who divides his time between coaching and playing first grade cricket in Brisbane and coaching tennis in Canada was joined by his son Christian.

The 12-year-old shows plenty of potential behind the stumps. Others among the infiltrators were former Queensland Shield player and regular QCC Over 40s captain Dennis Lillee. He was joined by QCC teammate Pat Carty.

Also seconded into the City crew was Salvatore Lacaria, the husband of Woolworth’s Australia Day Ambassador Countess Natalie von Faber Castell. Yes that’s right a real live Countess. While it was a hoot trying to teach Salvatore the vagaries of cricket, it was nothing short of a pleasure and honour to meet his marvellous wife.

The coaching prowess of Spud and I proved of little use - Lacaria can now lay claim to a golden duck in his maiden cricket game. I believe however he has a better handle on the rules thanks to the umpire (your columnist) than he has on batting.

The game I believe went the way of the Country side with no assistance from the umpiring at my end. It was all in good fun and there were plenty of funds raised by the end of the day for the local rural fire brigade who earlier in the week had been called upon to assist with the very serious bushfire situation.

Like so many other places, it was a day that

celebrated all that is good in our country and those who do good things without seeking recognition.

I hope you enjoyed your Australia Day, whether playing a game of social cricket, enjoying a coldie watching Australia slay the Poms (again) or sharing Rafa Nadal’s pain and the joy of Stan Wawrinka. Perhaps you were tucking into that steak burger or sausage sizzle prepared by your local service club.

If you were the recipient of an Australia Day Award, congratulations and thanks for the work and support you have obviously shown your community. Woodenbong, thanks for your hospitality.

AUSTRALIA Day equals a big weekend of cricket right across the Southern Downs and that meant a feast of cricket for everyone.

Stanthorpe held their annual Suncorp Super 8s carnival on Saturday. Early rain had organisers a little concerned but as the day progressed, the weather improved and the pitch looked to have taken no ill effects.

The carnival is a chance for all comers to have a hit. A field of 16 teams nominated for the carnival and organisers were pleasantly surprised with the numbers. The carnival is one of Stanthorpe cricket’s major fund-raisers for the year and is growing in popularity.

This year the overall winners were the RSL Wanderers team.

Winners of the mixed category were the NRL AllStars, where spectators got to enjoy the talents of some players crossing over from league to cricket while the ladies made a significant contribution.

At the other end of the shire, the Warwick Australia Day Carnival was also bigger and better than ever and with 33 teams, more than 700 cricketers and three days of cricket ahead the early morning showers on Saturday gave organisers a few nervous moments.

Fortunately, the carnival progressed with the only interruptions coming from chasing sixes and scoreboard attendants looking for higher numbers.

There was the game between Goomeri and Badzy’s Bandits in which a massive total of 5/315 posted by Goomeri was outdone by their opponents who amassed a whopping 5/351.

Outstanding performances came from Chris and Neil Cantwell who starred for SBH XI with bat and ball. Chris Cantwell finished the carnival with a batting average the Don would have been proud of - more than a ton.

Good overall performances saw eight undefeated sides featuring in the semi-finals in which bonus points went a long way to determining the finalists.

There were plenty of familiar faces lining up in the semi-finals.

Stunned Mullets played Jonesy’s XI at Slade Park; Condy Sports rook on Mitch’s/ Small’s XI at Mayhew; Hulk’s XI met Doc’s XI at Queen’s Park and SBH and XXXX played at Hamilton.

Finalists decided it was long time participants and first time grand finalists Hulk’s XI facing SBH (Stevens Bulk Haulage) at Slade Oval for Australia Day honours.

In an exciting final where SBH made only 112. Hulks XI needed 28 runs from the final six overs with wickets in hand. Right-handed bat Jim Olsen went for a sweep shot left-handed to notch up the winning run to give Hulk’s their first win in their 25 years in the carnival.

Final placings were Hulks X1; SBH XI; Mitch’s XI Stunned Mullets.

This weekend it will be back to the serious stuff for all local as the business end of the season draws closer.

THERE were rumblings round the back nine in Warwick last Friday as a good field teed off in the Red Rooster Rumble.

Conditions were ideal for young lefty Josh Hynes who finished with 28 points after a score of five-over off the clubs - perhaps his best score over nine holes. Dave Walker with a score of 27

was the runner-up Ball run downs went to 22 with Brad Rose 24, Mark Coote and Nev Heard 23, and James Buchner, Peter Dipplesman and Brian Sullivan all with scores of 22. Brendan Landrigan, Doug Wilson and Joely Singleton each collected pins.

WIN A BOOST FOR FAMILY BEN Cook put several weeks of family tragedy behind him last weekend to compete in the men’s division of the Stanthorpe Australia Day Triathlon. Cook is the grandson of Patty Cook and Des and Fran Day and son of Rodney and Kerri Cook.

Ben Cook The families are only just coming to terms with the sudden death of his uncle, Russell and the teen’s win on Sunday meant a great deal to the families.

It is not Cook’s first win on the Granite Belt, having been successful in the Mount Marley fun run several years ago.

Cook who has several triathlon wins under his belt including Bribie Island (twice) and Kingscliff is in training for the upcoming Mooloolaba Triathlon later in March explained that the course last weekend was a quite a bit shorter than he was accustomed to but never the less enjoyable.

Cook completed the course in 35:36.7mins, 08:48.6 mins in advance of second placegetter in the Men’s event Peter Cary.

There is plenty of talent in the Cook family with younger brother; 17-year-old Lachlan currently in training to compete in the ISF CrossCountry 2014 World Schools Championship in Israel in April.

Danielle Slater was the first woman across the line in the good time of 47.46 only slightly in advance of Anita Campbell of Stanthorpe.

The event proved popular with 44 participants in the mens, ladies and teams events and a field of 13 in the junior event won by Saxon Charles.

The next big event on the calendar for some of the locals who competed will be That Dam Ride between Stanthorpe and Glenlyon Dam in early February.

SPENCERS BACK ON GREENS MARIAN and Stan Spencer were back on the Stanthorpe Golf course last weekend and celebrated their return and Australia Day with a convincing win, returning a score of 51 points. Both played - their card read indicated, 25 points out and 26 back at the end of the round Keith Green and Ron Hansen also scored well collecting the runners-up prize with a score of 49 points. Sponsors of the Australia Day event were Tom and Tric Fittock who came up with some iconic Australian prizes.

Stan Spencer and Rachael Hendry took the pin shots at 3/12, Danny Folkers nearest at 17 and Tric Fittock held the ladies approach at 17, but deferred to next best approach, Lorraine Evans.

Pro pins were won by Dylan Barraclough at 1/10, Max Hunter at 5/14 and Mark Hendry at 9/18. The birdies’ nest has finally found a home - it was claimed by Rachael Hendry with a birdie at 16. Run down went to all teams with scores of 46 and better.

Of course there was more to the day than just mere golf with keenly contested prizes for the best presented cart and several categories of “best dressed”.

The judges were taken with Kev Rowling’s cart. Madeline Jarman caught the judge’s eye with her Australia Day attire and was declared “best dressed” female. Rod Werner had plenty of support for his outfit and won the male category.

The team outfits of Kay Webb and Linda Kelly blew the judges away and they were judged best dressed team. Scuttlebutt has it there may have been collusion or bribery involved in these results.

If so, that matter will have to be investigated by a specially convened group of judges to judge the judges.

BRL teams will have the chance of a pre-season hit-out on March 22 when the 2014 BRL premiers the Killarney Cutters host the traditional pre season round robin competition.

The Goondiwindi Boars have been granted permission to join the Group 19 competition after the BRL decision have only an A grade competition in 2014.

It has been a double-edged sword for the BRL - the inclusion of Goondiwindi would have meant the real possibility of an Under-18 and Reserve grade. The withdrawal of Goondiwindi and the destabilising effect that has had on teams means that is not a realistic option for the league.

On the positive side we will again see the Texas Terriers in action this season after injuries forced their withdrawal last season. Plans are also underway for a ladies league tag competition which is sure to garner a great deal of interest.

The Wallangarra Rams who have done a mountain of work on their playing surface were last week delighted to receive grant funding to assist with the installation of lights to assist with their training.

In an exciting development the 2GB Ray Hadley will be on hand in Killarney to broadcast live all the action at the Round Robin. More details of the day will be available as they come to hand.

THE racing fraternity has been quick to get behind an initiative to raise funds for Drug Arm and honour the memory of one of Toowoomba’s favourite racing sons and one of the brightest lights in the Queensland racing industry, jockey Stathi Katsidis.

Club and Robyn Katsidis the jockey’s mother a Memorial Dinner will be held at The Toowoomba Turf club on Saturday February 15.

NICK Donges of Granite Belt Fish Hatchery has delivered the first of 100,000 golden perch which will be released in the current stocking year which ends on 31 March.

About 31,500 golden perch were delivered to Leslie Dam and a further 12,000 earlier this week along with 10,240 earmarked for Connolly Dam. A delivery of 14,000 Murray Cod bound for Leslie Dam, 1400 Murray Cod for Connolly Dam and 2182 cod for the Condamine River and tributaries have also been delivered in the recent weeks.

The restocking program also received 82,000 golden and 15,000 silver perch for Leslie Dam, 1500 silver perch for Connolly Dam and 1500 silver perch for the Condamine River from Andrew Shaw from Australian Native Fish Enterprises.

This will be followed by a further 18,000 golden perch for the Condamine River which will be distributed by fish stocking members and supporters.

This important restocking work will ensure the reputation of these locations as premier fishing destinations continues in the future.

Unfortunately, for those anglers with prowess like mine the numbers might not necessarily translate to fish on the line but will give us a fighting chance.

PLANS are well underway for the 2014 RACQ Careflight Golf Day. The annual event is set down for Saturday 15 March. Organisers have programmed a 12-hole Three Person Ambrose event with a shot gun start at 11.30am.

Although the date is somewhat down the track, nominations are being taken for anyone wishing to support the fund-raiser or simply mark it in your diary. Nomination fee is $20 per person and includes green fees and steak burger.

There will be over $4000 worth of prizes on offer on the day.

Careflight is an organisation we all rely heavily on. They support us all when called on - we should support fund-raising activities that help keep them in the air.

THERE was plenty of support for Sporters on Australia Day and for some golfers fresh from wins in Saturday’s competitions, the winning feeling continued. Kev Rowlings backed up his win for most prestigious cart on Saturday by winning the Sporters event.

Phil Zikan was the runner-up with run-downs to Alex Cameron and Dick Hilton.

Dylan Barraclough had the best gross, Page took the pin shot on the third and the senior Barraclough, Greg, the Pro Pin. Rod Werner was judged to have been the smartest on the course on Saturday and Keith Green runner-up. Each added to their weekend loot each taking home a meat tray.
