MORE than 900 people were honoured by the nation on Australia Day including Hobsons Bay resident Merridee Hardinge.

Mrs Hardinge received an Order of Australia Medal on Sunday in recognition of her service to the community of Hobsons Bay. Mrs Hardinge’s voluntary service spans over 48 years. It includes her contribution to the Altona State Emergency Service Unit; Roadsafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council; Altona West Primary School and the VICSES Black Saturday Bushfire support among a long list of other community organisations.

“I felt honoured and privileged that I’ve been awarded the OAM for volunteering in my community, which is something I enjoy, and is an award which I wish to share with family and colleagues,” Ms Hardinge said.

The Altona resident has dedicated endless hours of her time over a handful of decades, volunteering with various groups and organisations while working and raising her three children.

“It’s a great city in which we live, with friendly people, quality beaches, recreational and community organisations, and by volunteering in a number of these organisations I feel I am making a worthwhile contribution,” she said.

Her volunteering journey first started in 1966 as a trained Warranted Assistant Cub Scout Leader.

“I found it personally rewarding and I have enjoyed volunteering over the years ever since,” Mrs Hardinge said.

In 1978 Mrs Hardinge became a parent support volunteer at the Altona playgroup when her eldest child Faye first started there.

She helped with fund-raising and was a parent support mentor until her three children moved to Lindwood Ave kindergarten where she continued her volunteering and support.

She then progressed with her three children to Altona West Primary school where she held the volunteer roles of president, secretary and treasurer over

THE Williamstown Swimming and Lifesaving Club Annual Australia Day Swim attracted hundreds of swimmers and spectators to the bay over the weekend.

The 24th annual Australia Day Swim kicked off the first leg of the Top of the Bay Series. It will be followed by the Point Gellibrand Rotary Club’s Big Bay 3.2km swim on 23 February and the Melbourne Swim Classic 2.5km at St Kilda Beach on 1 March.

“Conditions were perfect; sunny skies, gentle waves and a perfect temperature,” club president Ian Dickson said.

Swimmers as young as 12 years old also joined the event as well as regular swimmers like former Williamstown swimmer Mark Robbins who raced in his 24th consecutive Australia Day swim.

“The Stonehenge Homes swim ran very well with many competitors enjoying the new swim course

which ran from main beach past the picturesque crystal rocks, parallel to the promenade before turning out to sea for the return leg,” Mr Dickson said.

The major winners were Jeremy Drake, in the Senior Men, and Chloe Butt, in the Open Women category.

They completed the 2km swim in a time of 28.40 minutes and 29.06 minutes respectively.

Last year’s second place winners for the team swim, The Pasc team from Melbourne University, stepped up this year to claim first spot and won the major prize of $750.

The junior Nipper Swim event, catering for competitors from five to 13 years, resulted in four of Williamstown’s youngest swimmers winning the 250m and 500m categories.

Proceeds raised from the swims will be used toward training, rescue equipment and education resources for the nippers, cadets and lifeguards to keep beaches safe.

Asbestos street fear

By YASEMIN TALAT RESIDENTS in an Altona North street have raised concerns for their health after discovering asbestos in their yards.

They claim the asbestos has come from a neighbouring home that was demolished.

One resident from Hatherley Grove said he had come home from work last week to find asbestos all over his property.

“I found some asbestos in my front yard, I picked it up and got it tested and it came back positive as

being amosite asbestos, it was all over my front porch, my outdoor setting, and in my grass,” the neighbour said.

He said he immediately called Hobsons Bay Council and Worksafe but was getting the red tape run around.

“There are a lot of kids in this area, I’ve got a son who’s seven, you don’t want to bring them up and even risk them around anything like that,” he said.

“The only reason I know a bit about it is because I work around

it, others would just think its plaster they wouldn’t understand the risk until it’s too late.”

Mayor of Hobsons Bay Sandra Wilson said the council was doing whatever was in their hands to address the issue.

“The council takes community safety seriously and no more so than when it comes to the proper management of asbestos removal,” Cr Sandra Wilson.

“Once notified about this incident, the council immediately undertook every action available

to it,” Cr Wilson said.

“Worksafe was contacted and they have organised to make a site visit to assess the situation.

“Additionally, the private building surveyor was contacted by the council to ascertain what went on in respect to the demolition. “ Victorian WorkCover Authority spokesman said the complaint was received and the organisation was looking into it.

“The VWA has since visited the site and is making further inquiries,” he said.

Transport all night long?

By XAVIER SMERDON MELBOURNE residents have been promised a 24-hour public transport system on weekends if Labor wins this year’s State election.

Member for Altona and the Shadow Minister for Public Transport, Jill Hennessy, said trains would run on the Werribee Line, stopping at Seaholme, Altona, Westona, Laverton, Aircraft, Williams Landing and Hoppers Crossing stations.

“Under Labor, residents in Seaholme, Altona, Altona Meadows, Laverton, Seabrook, Williams Landing, Truganina and Point Cook will have transport options that have never before been available to them,” Ms Hennessy said.

“The new Homesafe Trains will mean workers in Melbourne’s West who work in the city will have the added options to get home on Friday’s and Saturday’s.

“Residents in Melbourne’s West who have an evening out in the city face a situation where they are either running for the last train, waiting hours for the first one, or trying to find a cab, it’s not good enough.”

Ms Hennessy said Melbourne was a worldclass 24-hour city that needed a public transport system to match.

“Under Labor, getting home will be safer, easier and cheaper for residents living in Seaholme, Altona, Altona Meadows, Laverton, Seabrook, Williams Landing, Truganina and Point Cook.

That’s good for our economy, workers and our nightlife,” she said.

If Labor is elected they will conduct a $50 million, 12-month trial of all night Friday and Saturday public transport and according to Ms Hennessy, the new system would be up and running

by New Year’s Eve 2015.

But Victorian Treasurer Michael O’Brien said the Government’s own estimations had shown that the plan would be expected to cause public transport fares to increase by 22 per cent.

Mr O’Brien said the cost of Labor’s election promise would be $102.2 million, more than double the announced cost.

“This blowout alone would cause a 14.7 per cent across the board fare increase to all passengers to pay for Labor’s promise.”

Safety lessons in happy ending on bay Secure plates

By YASEMIN TALAT WILLIAMSTOWN Police were at the height of a search and rescue search to find three missing people in the waters of Sandy Point last Monday.

A couple, together with their 16-month-old daughter, were found safe and dry after police launched an air and water search when the trio failed to return from a Sandy Point fishing trip.

The family launched their 3.5 metre tinny from Sandy Point for fishing in Shallow Inlet on Monday after noon at about 2pm.

A family member raised the alarm later that night, at around 11pm, when the family failed to return home as expected.

The Police Airwing assisted by local police, water police, and SES and local surf club volun-

teers immediately responded to the call.

The family were found beached on the bank of the inlet safe and well two hours later. They did not have a mobile phone with them or any other communication devices on board.

Water Police Sergeant Andrew Lilly was relieved the family were found safe but was concerned at their lack of preparedness.

“They managed to get a campfire going to stay safe and warm, obviously that helped us locate them,” he said.

“They did all the right things in the circumstances, it’s just we would encourage better preparation for your trip,” he said.

“The information we had was that they didn’t have provision for anovernight stay and there were medical concerns, so we were at a state of

heightened risk straight away.

“We deployed every asset we could possibly find to resolve the situation very quickly.”

Sgt Lilly said the family may have encountered dangers if they had stayed any longer.

Acting Senior Sergeant Alistair Nisbet reminded those people who were off boating to make sure their boats and equipment were in good working order.

“If you are going out, let family and friends know what your plans are and maintain communications with them. Also watch the weather forecasts and try to familiarise yourself with the area, if you don’t know the area ask,” Sgt Nisbet said.

“Things can turn pear-shaped pretty quickly out in the water, so we implore that you do wear a life jacket if you can, just for your own safety.”

MORE than 200 vehicles had number plates secured last Sunday as part of police operation Safe Plate.

The operation, which was set up at Bunnings Car Park in Hoppers Crossing, was labelled a “huge” success by police who helped secure the number plates on more than 220 vehicles.

Leading Senior Constable and Crime Prevention Officer Craig McDonald said the operation was a “great community based crime prevention program”.

As well as the hundreds of number plates secured on the day, screws were also given out to those who wished to secure their plates themselves.

Another Safe Plate operation will be set up in mid-February at the new Masters car park in Williams Landing.

New time for kids

BACK to school next week can be an exciting time for most children but also a little frightening for others.

It’s a new year, new grade, perhaps a new school and new friends and for some children 2014 could even mean a new family.

Anglicare Victoria this week is reminding communities about the children in care who seek the love and support of a family during this emotional time of the year.

Anglicare Victoria’s Volunteer Recruitment and Support Worker Jessica Rapa said this could be a positively traumatic time for children who have been removed from their parents.

“Children in care are some of the most

vulnerable in the community,” Ms Rapa said.

“For many children in care, a new school year may mean a new family, new friends and a completely new life,” she said.

“They move school often and they are usually behind academically, so they are always feeling like the ‘new kid’.”

Ms Rapa said even the children who were far behind could easily catch up with their peers and thrive emotionally with the right support and stability.

“That’s what foster carers do,” she said.

“They provide a supportive, secure and safe environment to come home to at the end of the school day.”

Anglicare Victoria is currently looking for foster carers to join the Hobsons Bay,

Maribyrnong and Wyndham teams.

Anyone over 21 years of age who can offer a child in need a secure, loving home is eligible to be a carer.

Carers can be single, de facto or married, with or without their own children.

All prospective carers must pass required checks, attend training and undergo an accreditation process.

Anglicare Victoria’s foster carers receive 24-hour on-call support, ongoing training and social events, and a tax-free reimbursement.

SOCCEROO and A-league football star Archie Thompson was in Altona North last week joined by dozens of youngsters at his soccer camp.

The Archie Thompson School of Soccer landed in Altona North’s Emmanuel College, with football fans coming from near and far for the threeday camp.

Thompson hoped the camps would nurture the nation’s next big football stars.

“I’m hoping this camp can potentially have some future Socceroos and Matildas and I can see already there’s some great talent here,” Thompson said.

The footballer was hands-on at the camp, playing matches with the kids, lending tips and advice and just having a chat.

“We are all about the kids having fun, and that’s the most important thing,” he said.

Thompson said he loved hanging out with the kids, and felt like a big kid himself.

“For me it feels like I’m in the backyard again and that’s the reason I played football because I enjoyed it in the backyard at home,” he said.

The Altona North camp was a sell-out, with girls and boys aged between eight and 17 gearing up to take part.

“Football out here, particularly in the west, has a big following, and I think there are

not many camps of this sort that come out here very often,” Thompson said.

“If we can keep having schools offering their facilities we are going to only help the kids and they’re going to learn about football, learn about having fun and about nutrition and meet new friends,” he said.

“We want kids to have that discipline and belief that they can be anything they want to be,” he said.

“If they have aspirations to be a professional footballer then we teach them what they need to know to hopefully get them on the way to become a professional footballer or if they want to become anything, if they follow their dreams it is possible.”

Sporty models theft spike A SPIKE in thefts of older model vehicles has led police to issue a warning to car owners.

Police have urged all owners of late ’90s model Honda and Subaru vehicles be vigilant, especially when parking on the street.

“Across the division we are experiencing a rise in the theft of mid to late ’90s model Honda and Subaru vehicles and the

majority of these thefts occur from the street,” Leading Senior Constable and Crime Prevention Officer Craig McDonald said.

“There are still a lot of these vehicles out there so we are asking the owners to please take more care with their vehicle security,” Ldg Sen Const McDonald said.

“If possible, try to park your vehicle off the street, locked and immobilised in a secure garage,” he said.

“Or if this is not possible always try to utilise some sort of vehicle immobiliser, be it a steering lock or ignition immobiliser,” he said.

“It’s a small expense to save your car and a lot of stress and anxiety if it gets stolen.”

FEBRUARY marks the start of ovarian cancer awareness month and many organisations and locals are getting behind the national campaign.

One of the most popular events on this month’s calendar is the Brazilian Butterfly Queen of the Lake fun run.

Women are being encouraged to join in the fun and become queen for the morning while celebrating women’s health and fitness on Sunday 9 February.

Altona North resident Tiffany Lucas said she’s known

as a princess among her friends and can’t wait to take part in the event.

“It’s a good thing for the girls to do together and the fact that it supports ovarian cancer, it’s a fantastic cause,” Ms Lucas said.

“It’s great to support a cause that a lot of people know a lot about but don’t know how to help out,” she said.

Ms Lucas will be joined by her friends and she has even encouraged work colleagues to jump on board.

“It’s about making people aware and letting them know there’s something like this

to support such a wonderful cause,” Ms Lucas said.

“And it’s about trying to get as many people involved,” she said. “All the money is going towards the cause, so every little bit helps.”

Ovarian Cancer Australia’s national Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month campaign is aimed to highlight the symptoms of ovarian cancer and to raise funds for the programs.

Brazilian Butterfly Queen of the lake raised more than $23,000 last year for the cause.

HEAD lice remedies are on the top of the priority list as parents prepare for the new school year.

Medibank has reported a rise in calls to the Medibank 24/7 Health Advice Line, and there have been higher Google search stats and questions on online forums showing that parents are concerned about head lice and are starting to take precautions.

Medibank Medical Director Dr Ian Boyd said anyone could get head lice, but it was most common in children aged between four and 11 years old and girls were more likely to get them than boys.

“Head lice can be found in all types and lengths of hair,” Dr Boyd said.

“Everyone should know that having head lice is not a sign that your hair is dirty.”

Dr Boyd said head lice were not a social-economic or class problems and it did not relate to how clean the child’s hair was.

“The best way to prevent head lice spreading is to check your whole family regularly, keep long hair tied back or in plaits, and don’t share brushes, combs, or pillows,” Dr Boyd said.

“Parents can prepare their kids for school by investing in some hair ties, a fine toothcomb and conditioner,” he said.

Keilor mother Marijana Mandir said she liked to take extra care of her daughter Amelie’s long hair to prevent her from getting head lice.

“I have a solution of Teatree oil and water that I spray into her hair in the mornings before she goes to school,” Ms Mandir said.

“And I like to make sure her hair is neat and tied up,” she said.

“But I guess it’s just part of being a kid.”

Toes doing the talking

By YASEMIN TALAT A GROUP of friends has teamed up to walk 60 kilometres over The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers in March.

With the event around the corner, Debbie Carr from Altona, Louise Nicol from Altona Meadows and Rosalin Pelen of Point Cook, are preparing for the weekend with lots of walking and lots of fund-raising.

“We’ve all been affected by family and friends who have had to endure cancer, and we wanted to support them so we thought this was an ideal way of doing it,” Ms Carr said.

in the event was also a great way to keep healthy by training regularly.

“We’ve been meeting up and walking five to six kilometres and we’ve also been walking by ourselves,” she said.

“We’ve been using the app ‘Map my Walk’ and putting that on Facebook to motivate each other and messaging each other too.” Dubbing their team Twinkle Toes, the group has been busy hosting a variety of fundraisers since signing up.

The events have included a shopping tour, food parties, chocolate drives and even fun dares among each other to raise funds.

Ms Nicol said the team worked hard to come up with exciting ways to raise money and were continuously ‘thinking outside the box’.

The next event on the calendar before the big walk is the Twinkle Toes Trivia Night.

It will be held at D’Olive View Estate in Point Cook, tickets are $15 per person or $105 for a table of eight.

Study into police relations

By ALESHA CAPONE A LAWYER conducting research into experiences young African-Australians have with police has said she believes positive steps taken by authorities have improved the situation.

Tallace Bissett is completing her PhD on the issue at the University of Melbourne.

Ms Bissett said most of the stories she hears about police interaction with African-Australian youths centred on Sunshine, Flemington and Dandenong communities.

She said statistics showed young African-Australians were under-represented in crime statistics but over-represented among people stopped in the streets by police.

The issue has been in the spotlight again recently, after Victoria Police released a report following a 2013 Federal Court case accusing officers of racially profiling and harassing a group of African-Australian males in Flemington.

Ms Bissett said this report was a step in the right direction because many youths want the situation to change.

“There are a lot of smart young people who say, ‘We are part of the solution, we are not part of the problem’,” she said.

“One theme is that it seems to be up to African communities to keep themselves out of trouble.

“But people say to me, ‘I am doing all these things and I still get stopped’.

“Particularly with people from an African background, they have sort-of been interested about the stuff we have

Victoria Police Leanne Sargent from the Priority Communities Division said a three-year action plan, aimed at improving how police engage with diverse communities, has been developed following extensive community consultation.

“It was encouraging to hear that there is a belief that Victoria Police community relationships have improved over time,” she said. “We believe much progress has been made in the way that police engage with all

members of the community.”

Ms Sargent said in the West, police have set up many projects aimed at improving community relationships, such as a Community Encounters program trial in Brimbank and in Melton where officers have met with Sudanese leaders.

Maribyrnong Police Inspector Tony Long said programs to help African-Australians find jobs, camps for disadvantaged youth and sports games were among the efforts happening in his municipality.

ARTZ Collective student Jesse Matthews, from Newport, has gained entry into Victoria’s prestigious performing arts college, VCASS (Victorian College of the Arts Secondary College) for Year 9, in classical dance - and he’s naturally jumping for joy.

The 15-year-old had already studied ballet, however he trained far more rigorously for two years, after deciding he would like to audition in 2010.

His ballet teacher and Artz Collective principal Ziggy Clements said the teaching staff at the Artz Collective discussed Jesse’s desire, but wanted him to wait for a Year 8 audition.

And since VCASS only auditions students in Year 5 (for a Year 7 entry) and Year 8 for a Year 9 entry, the Arts Collective devised a plan for Jesse to stick to and to even out his technique, so he could be in the best shape possible in October when auditions were held nationally.

Jesse’s parents are incredibly supportive of him, however they admitted they knew absolutely nothing about the world of dance, other than what they had gleaned over the past couple of years being around Artz Collective. However, they definitely wanted the guidance of Artz Collective to assist Jesse as much as they could, Ms Clements said.

Jessica is a classical ballet, singing and jazz dance student with two years of honours results under her belt.

Ms Clements said: “She is a student with a huge future, her potential is just stunning for her age. Jessica would like to work

towards auditioning for VCASS as well, now that she has seen Jesse succeed. He has inspired her, and she just loves dancing.”

“We are so lucky to have Ms Joanne Adderley, former head of the National Ballet School on our teaching team, as it means a lot with our professional experience in the worlds of ballet and dance companies and national musical theatre productions. We do feel we can foster and mentor students who want to take their dance, singing or acting on to the next level, like Jesse or Jessica,” she said.

THE Jeremy McPherson Ballet and Dance School in Braybrook is a boutique school for training kids to dance under the principal Jeremy McPherson.

Beyond health and fitness METABOLIC Fitness Centre is the hub of internal fitness conditioning, paving the way to the path beyond health and fitness.

MFC is a unique functional personal training centre primarily promoting and fostering long-term vision of personal training culture that provides proper fitness foundation training as well as advanced martial

arts conditioning training to the general public, specifically Western Region.

The health centre opened in August last year.

Founder and owner Stanley Truong has been a personal trainer with a number of large health clubs for the last eight years and has a wide client base.

It is also a central hub for

integrating internal fitness conditioning as well as internal martial arts training, paving the way to the path beyond health and fitness.

These include traditional soft and gentle fighting art such as Taichi Chuan (Chen style), Aiki Kai Aikido while the hard style HunGar KungFu and many more to come.

The health club offers a number of personal training services, fitness and circuit classes including Les Mills body pump and body combat, yoga, Zumba and Pilates.

Clients can also have specialised training such as fitness boxing classes, martial arts, two chambers Cross Fit and circuit training and much more.

MFC is an exclusive medium-sized personal training centre with a focus on simple fitness foundation skills and beyond.

Members can train in an uncluttered, non-intimidating, respectful and safe environment so they can train in full capacity and with one intention - focus and intensity.

There is an economical onefee membership available.

Muirhead steps up

By ADEM SARICAOGLU ALTONA leg spinner James Muirhead was in the car about to go to dinner when he answered his phone and heard John Inverarity’s voice on the other end.

Inverarity, Cricket Australia’s national selector, was calling to tell the 20-year-old he was part of 14-man Australian Twenty20 International squad taking on England throughout the coming week.

“I was with my dad about to leave home to go out for dinner, and at 7.30pm I got the call from John, and he said, ‘I’m in the squad for the first T20 game against England,’ so I’m as shocked as anything,” Muirhead said. “(I was) definitely not (expecting it), considering I’ve only played four domestic Twenty20 games and only two first class games.

“So to play international cricket at the age of 20 - I was not expecting it, but I feel that I’m up for it. So I just can’t wait to hopefully get a crack.”

Muirhead made his Sheffield Shield debut for Victoria last summer, and has since emerged as one of the most promising spinners in the country after impressing for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.

With fellow spinners Jon Holland and Fawad Ahmed also currently plying their trade with the Victorian Bushrangers, Muirhead said he’s had to work hard for an opportunity at the next level.

“Obviously, Dutchy (Holland) and Fawad are pretty good bowlers, so I’ve been just working really, really hard on my game and then just hoping I’ll get my opportunity and take it with both hands,” he said.

“I haven’t played a first class game for Victoria this year, so playing an international game before I play a game for the Bushrangers is totally unexpected.”

Australia will play England in three T20 Internationals before the eventual Australian squad for this year’s ICC World Twenty20 goes to South Africa for another three-game series.

In his 50th and final season, Neil Temby (second from the left) pulled on the whites for the last time with his brother David and sons, Daniel and Jacob.

The Temby name has been synonymous with St John’s Cricket Club throughout Neil’s career during which he has played in premiership winning sides with his father, brother and sons. The Tembys will play in different sides for the rest of the year in the hope of adding more silverware to the St John’s trophy cabinet before Neil officially retires his bat at the end of the season.

THE Footscray Cycling Club raced at Altona’s Drake Boulevard on Australia Day, with riders enjoying sunny skies and a moderate NorthEasterly breeze. The A Grade race saw 21-year-old Bikebug.com rider James Butler use his trademark diesel engine to pull away from the rest to take the win.

Gisborne resident Butler is a regular visitor to Footscray CC races, and said he enjoyed the club’s style of racing.

“Today’s race was typical FCC, the mentality of the guys is great,” he said.

“They seem to be able to ride on the threshold for the whole race, so it started out with a couple of guys going up the road early on, and we chased for ages to bring them back and straight away a group of five guys went, and the chase was back on again.

“With three laps to go, I managed to bridge across to the leaders. No one was having a sit, everyone was

doing it tough. It was every man for himself for a lap as we all attacked, and I managed to get clear with three-quarters of a lap to go, so I was pretty happy.”

Butler is known for his long breakaways, something he attributed to playing to his strengths.

“I’m not one of the best sprinters in the bunch, so preferably I don’t want to leave the result to a sprint,” he said.

“That leaves me with the solo breakaway.”

Butler is planning to try his luck in Italy or Belgium this year, coming off a successful 2013 with Team Target Trek.

He was followed in on Sunday by a fast-finishing Ross Mueller in second who just held off Brett Hickford in third.

In other results on the day, Anthony Molinia was too good in B Grade while Colin Morris was victorious in C Grade.

Putting the bite back in the Bulldogs LIAM TWOMEY THIS time last year, there wasn’t much to celebrate for Footscray Edgewater.

The Bulldogs were out of the Victorian Premier Cricket finals race and finished the season a disappointing 12th on the ladder.

But if a week is a long time in sport, what can happen in the space of 12 months is staggering.

Following its smashing of Melbourne Uni last week, Footscray is on top of the Premier Cricket table and is a genuine premiership contender.

The club has gone toe-to-toe with the cream of the crop and walked away with the chocolates on 12 of 14 occasions.

But according to the man in charge, Footscray Edgewater chairman Geoff Collinson, the job isn’t over yet.

Collinson has been rapt with his side’s turnaround in form which coincided with master coach Steven Chapman joining the club in the off-season.

Chapman previously coached Premier Cricket rival Dandenong to a premiership and he has wasted no time working similar magic at Farnsworth Avenue.

Footscray is now setting its sights on making an impact at the business end of the season.

“At the start of the season we thought we would have a team capable of playing finals,” Collinson said.

“Now with the way the team has come together and

“Steven (Chapman) has had a terrific impact on the playing group and the club as a whole. His knowledge of cricket is incredibly deep and his experience of being an ex-county player and having been a successful coach both here and overseas is fantastic.”

Leading the charge on field and instilling fear into batsmen everywhere has been Bulldogs’ opening bowler Jake Haberfield.

The gun quick joined Footscray from South Australia in what has proved to be a recruiting masterstroke.

Haberfield has taken 36 wickets at an average of 15.50 and has batsmen throughout the competition wondering if there is anything worse than seeing the tear-away quick steaming in.

But they need wonder no more with Haberfield likely to be sharing the new ball with worldclass speedster John Hastings for finals.

“Having a look at the fixture, if we can get through the quarterfinals stage it looks like we may get John Hastings back,” Collinson said.

“He is obviously a great bowler, having played for Australia last season but at our level of cricket he is a genuine number four batsman as well.

“When you’ve got John Hastings and Jake Haberfield opening the bowling, it is going to send a few shivers through a lot of opposition batsmen.”

While the playing list continues to develop at a rate of knots, Footscray believe many of its stars are ready to make an impact on the game at the next level.

Haberfield has been selected for the Victorian Sheffield Shield side during the season and is contracted to the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League.

His team-mates, Dean Russ and Dylan Kight, have been regulars in the Bushrangers’ second XI and Guy Walker will represent Australia at under-19 level next month.

With the stage set for an exciting end to the 2013/14 season for Footscray, the club is also keeping a close eye on the future to ensure its stay at the top end of the ladder is a long one.

Last year Footscray launched its Bulldogs Academy, which is designed to develop all the best cricketing talent throughout Melbourne’s Western Suburbs.

“It (the Bulldogs Academy) is really unique. We are the only club in Australia to do it,” Collinson said.

“First and foremost, we see that we have a community responsibility to develop cricket in the area.

“Obviously we are going to be a beneficiary of that with the half a dozen elite kids coming through the club.

“We have also got a responsibility to all the subDistrict clubs and all the local clubs to try and make their players better and make the competition better so it becomes just as strong as anything in Melbourne.”

Guy Walker has just been picked in the Australian under-19s tour, which is the second or third time he has been selected at that level. Whittington’s winning streak

By LIAM TWOMEY SOME of the biggest tennis names in the world were no match for Williamstown local Andrew Whittington at last week’s Australian Open.

The 20-year-old showed why he belongs on the big stage with a blistering run through the men’s doubles with his partner Alex Bolt.

The young guns made it all the way to the quarterfinals after receiving a wildcard into the main draw.

Whittington and Bolt enjoyed an early dose of luck after their first round opponents, Julian Knowle and Vasek Pospisil were forced to retire just three games into their match.

The pair then went on to defeat number three seeds Fernando Verdasco and David Marrero 7-6 6-3 and another Spanish duo in Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Pablo Carreno Busta 6-7 7-6 7-5.

The dream run was eventually halted by number eight seeds and two of the tour’s leading doubles players, Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic 6-2 7-6.

Whittington’s coach John Trickey was rapt with his star pupil’s efforts.

“As a whole, they did unbelievably well,” Trickey said.

“It should give them a lot of confidence that, particularly in doubles, they are never out of place against whoever they play.

“They have beaten a couple of really world class teams.”

The quarter-final showing continues what has been a brilliant run for Whittington, whose singles ranking jumped from 787 in the world at the start of 2013 to a career high 368 by

“He played quite well in the singles (at the Australian Open) as well,” Trickey said.

“He (Whittington) had a set point in the first set and lost 7-6 6-4, so he

didn’t look out of place at that level either.”

Whittington will now turn his attention to Australian Challenger events in Burnie and West Lakes in the coming weeks as he looks to continue his impressive start to 2014.

However, before jetting off he also dropped into the Bayside P-12 College tennis program where he regularly trains and helps coach some of the best young talent in the state.

“His attention to detail and his willingness to compete, even in a training session, it just sets the standard for our kids.

“He isn’t happy if he makes an error, and that is why he is doing so well.

Trickey is also confident the wins will keep coming for Whittington.

“In the last 12 months, his singles ranking has gone up about 350 or 400 spots. Now his doubles ranking will climb a couple of hundred spots,” he said.

“I would love to see him inside the top 200 in singles by the end of the year.”

Roy Picone has written a new book on the history of the Spotswood Cricket Club. 113349

Cricket by the book A NEW book detailing the long and colourful history of the Spotswood Cricket Club will be launched early next month.

Roy Picone, 86, who has been on the club’s committee since 1955, put the book together after recently doing the same for the Spotswood Football Club.

“I’ve lived in the same house for nearly 86 years and it’s just a drop kick from the oval, so I’ve been more or less brought up with the football club and the cricket club,”

Picone said.

“I used my own memories and researched the old Williamstown Chronicle, the Williamstown Advertiser and the Werribee Banner on a computer down in the library, where we got a lot of the stuff.

“It only took me about six or eight months to compile it all.”

The book traces the club, once known as the Spottiswoody Cricket Club, back to its origins all the way back to 1891, after it was initially thought to have been established in 1929.

It also reveals two Brownlow Medallists and two former Footscray coaches have donned the whites for Spotswood throughout its storied history.

Joint 1930 Brownlow Medallist Allan Hopkins was a Woodsman during the 1930s while South Melbourne’s Fred Goldsmith, who took Charlie home in 1955, also played for Spotswood during the VFL offseason.

Picone also told Star former Footscray coaches Alby Morrison and Don McKenzie were once

Spotswood cricketers.

The book also contains a piece on former player Hugh Lennon, a local plough maker whose name was embossed on Ned Kelly’s suit of armour.

The cover of the book features Charlie Reid, who will turn 100 this October and is Spotswood’s oldest living player.

The book will be officially launched at Donald McLean Reserve on 8 February, after the Woodmen’s Turf Cricket home clash against Keilor Park.

Throughout the last year, Thomas has been burning up the track at Williamstown and recently won two gold medals at the Oceania Masters Games in the 800m and 1500m events respectively.

“I did have a small break from athletics for awhile, of about 35 years,” Thomas joked.

“I am still a little bit taken aback that I would have been able to make that much progress in that time.

“I have a really good relationship with my coach who also coaches my son. He is very open to members joining in and he has an incredible age range in the middle distances. I couldn’t have done it without having that coaching and someone to push me along and more than any-

thing, tell me what to do.”

Thomas’s son Ryhan is one of Williamstown Athletics Club’s rising stars and claimed a bronze medal at the All Schools State Championships in the 3000m event late last year.

“We do train together a bit which is good,” Thomas said.

“My son is very committed and it has been great to train with him.

There is a bit of friendly competition and we have a few jokes about it.”

Following on from his great results, Thomas has no plans to slow down and is setting his sights on competing at the Australian Masters Championships in March.

He also encouraged anyone who was thinking about getting into athletics after a break to give it a go.

“You only need to drive through the suburbs and see how many people are jogging to see how popular it is,” he said “To take the next step and see how you go competitively is not really much of an effort. It is great to be in a club as well. It is very family orientated.”

THE Tarneit Titans, the newest club in the WRFL, is holding its family day this Sunday at its new facilities and ovals at Wootten Rd Reserve in Tarneit. You can join some AFL and VFL players who will be there and watch the Titans’ senior team train. For the kids there is jumping castles, face painting and fairy floss.

GREAT to see Williamstown boy Andrew Whittington make it through to the quarter finals of the Australian Open doubles last week.

Andrew is only 20 and his doubles ranking will be inside the top 100 in the world after his performance. Andrew is coached by John Trickey who is director of coaching at Bayside Tennis School in Williamstown. The school still has a few vacancies available for 2014 and it is not too late for students to enrol. Tennis is over and the major cricket competitions are about to end which means it is less than two weeks until the footy is back.

Bass’s ram raid

By ADEM SARICAOGLU AN outstanding performance with both bat and ball from Travis Bass helped Newport score an easy 10-0 road win over Sunshine in Division One baseball on Saturday.

On the mound, Bass limited Sunshine to a scoreless two hits for the day, while he also managed to pick up three hits of his own on the plate - leading his Rams to an impressive mercy rule victory.

After going down 5-3 to Doncaster four days earlier, Newport coach Grant Weir said it was pleasing to see his Rams bounce back in such strong fashion, albeit against the struggling Eagles.

“They are struggling but their American pitcher (Chris Prokupek) has been pretty decent and the wind was blowing in, so it was a hard hitting day and to score 10 runs in seven innings was a really good effort,” Weir said.

“It was really important because we just need to keep picking up those wins and we can still mathematically make finals.”

Newport deliberately targeted Prokupek throughout the day - forcing him out of the game by the fifth inning.

“Our plan was to make sure that he threw a lot of pitches because we know he’s been doing a lot of work and we wanted to

“We made him throw a lot of pitches in the first five innings and then it opened up from there.

“He’s had a long season and done a lot of work for them so that was a good result, and then we went forward after that.

“To score 10 runs on that

day was a really good effort.”

With Essendon and Geelong both dominating Conference Two, the Rams will need a little bit of luck to get to the post-season, which will begin in early March.

Newport will again face Sunshine at the Altona Ballpark tonight (Tuesday) before hosting Preston on Sunday afternoon.

Rondo is set to turn heads on the road and provide top safety for its owners.

Rondo takes out max Euro ratings KIA has maintained its clean sweep of five-star safety ratings for its new-generation range, gaining a maximum rating for its new Rondo compact people-mover from the Euro New Car Assessment Program in Europe, where it is known as the Carens.

Like other fresh Kia models such as Optima, Rio, Cerato, Sportage, Sorento and Soul, the seven-seat Rondo is now likely to earn the same top rating from the Australian NCAP organisation, which frequently adopts the ENCAP judgment.

The all-new Rondo was launched in Australia in June when it gained diesel power the Hyundai-Kia group’s 1.7-litre unit - for the first time as an alternative to the new 2.0-litre petrol engine.

As expected, the new model has given the nameplate a sales boost in this market, selling about 50 units a month since launch.

This is well short of the topselling Kia Carnival’s average of about 200 a month, but well up on the previous Rondo’s performance.

With four months of newmodel sales under its belt, the latest Rondo has already eclipsed last year’s full-year Rondo sales tally of 293.

In the ENCAP crash tests announced today, the five-door Rondo received a high 94 per cent score for adult occupant protection, 76 per cent for child occupant protection, 81 per cent for safety assist equipment, and 64 per cent for pedestrian protection.

Euro NCAP testers awarded the Rondo maximum point scores for side impact protection against a barrier, child protection for 18-month-old infants, front seat whiplash protection and protection for pedestrians’ legs.
