OAM for war veteran By ALESHA CAPONE BURNSIDE great-grandfather Ronald McGrath has been recognised in the Australia Day 2014 Honours List, after more than six decades of dedicated volunteer work. The 88-year-old has received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to veterans. Mr McGrath said he was surprised to receive the honour. “My wife would tell you I nearly had a heart attack,” he said. With four sons, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Mr McGrath has made his family proud. During World War II, Mr McGrath joined the RAAF as an 18-year-old. He served in Queensland and Papua New Guinea as a transport driver. After the war ended, Mr McGrath became a founding member of the Royal Australian Air Force Association 7 Squadron. “We decided after we had made so many friends - officers and gentlemen - right across Australia that we should keep in touch,” he said. Mr McGrath has spent more than 65 years in various roles at the organisation including secretary, treasurer, vice-president and committee member.

Mr McGrath is also an accomplished pianist and played at concerts to entertain his RAAF mates during the war. Mr McGrath said his beloved wife Betty has been an inspiration and great support to him throughout their marriage. “While I was the official office bearer for all those years, I could not have served my fellow veterans without Betty at my side,” he said. Mr McGrath has also received a long service commendation from the Red Cross, after 10 years as a volunteer driver with the charity. “I was very proud of that,” he said. Mr and Mrs McGrath helped start the Essendon Civic Association, which went on to establish the Buckley Park Bowling Club, of which Mr McGrath was the first secretary. The civic association also created the Buckley Park Tennis Club and the Doutta Stars Football Club. Mr McGrath’s proud son, Alan, recalls his Dad driving footy players to games in the back of his flatbed truck and playing the piano at sporting social functions. In addition, his father helped establish the Essendon Probus Club and Essendon Central Probus Club.

The Footscray-based Vietnamese Community in Australia Victorian Chapter have lost $41,000 they were awarded under the BMCP. Vice-president Viv Nguyen said they needed the funds for works including an air-conditioner and heater at a cultural and heritage centre in Sunshine North. “Naturally I’m very disappointed,” Ms Nguyen said. “But the president and myself have sought assistance to see if we can meet with the relevant minister and see what our prospects are. All is not lost from our perspective.” General manager of Australian Vietnamese Women’s Asso-

ciation in Footscray, Hai Nguyen, said the group has lost $18,500 in promised BMCP funds. “We spent the money in advance because we were told it had to spent by 10 December, then they sent a letter that same day which said we wouldn’t get the money,” he said. Last week, Gellibrand MP Tim Watts and the Opposition spokeswoman for Citizenship and Multiculturalism, Michelle Rowland, visited the Polish Club in Albion, which has lost $160,000 funding. Club president Andrew Korab, said the centre was “running on fumes” and the building upgrades were “very urgent”.

SEVERAL volunteer-run groups in the West have been left devastated after the Federal Government cancelled funding, which would have been used to support community and charity work. The Liberal Government has withdrawn up to $600,000 from groups in the West. The Building Multicultural Communities Program (BMCP) funds had been announced in the national budget by the previous Labor Government. However, the Federal Government has since sent letters to many clubs to say their funding had been terminated.

UP TO 90 pool owners in Brimbank have been ordered to fix problems with their pool fences identified across six months. The council’s director of city development, Stuart Menzies, said the council has issued approximately 90 building orders for minor works relating to pools between July and December in 2013. “The pool safety program undertaken by the council’s building services unit of involves up to 20 pool inspections per month,” Mr Menzies said. “Council’s approach involves a combination of information, education and enforcement action.” “The number one reason is for the safety and well-being of our community and especially with regards to children under the age of five years, as specified in the Australian Standards. “Building orders for minor works in relation to pool safety have been issued in suburbs across the municipality. “There is no apparent trend in relation to particular suburbs.” There are more than 340 pools within Brimbank which are legally obliged to abide by national criteria and building regulations. Life Saving Victoria’s 2012/13 Drowning Report, which was released late last year, revealed that there were 130 drowning incidents in Victoria between July 2012 and June 2013 - including those in natural waterways, the sea and pools. With including 41 fatal and 89 non-fatal drowning incidents, this represented the highest drowning toll since 2004/05. Pools were the most common location for non-fatal drownings to occur in 2012/13, where more than 50 per cent of all the recorded accidents took place. Pools were also the most common location of non-fatal drowning for children aged up to four years old, with more than 60 per cent of these incidents occurring in prirvate pools. public pools and spa baths. Brimbank City Council has advised residents to conduct summer safety checks of their pools and spas, including gates and fences. The council also offers complete inspections, for a fee. Application forms are available at brimbank.vic.gov.au or contact the Building and Compliance Unit on 9249 4000.

TWO men have been charged in relation to the suspicious disappearance of Deer Park man Ricky Lee Ganly during April last year. Last Wednesday, police arrested a 30-year-old Avoca male in Avoca at about 10.30am. The man faced an out-of-sessions court hearing and has been charged with one count of being an accessory to murder. A 28-year-old Maryborough man has been charged with one count of murder. A male’s body, believed to be that of Mr Ganly, was located in a submerged car at an abandoned Avoca mine shaft last year. Police and divers searching the water-filled mine on Homebush Rd located both the vehicle and a rifle. Mr Ganly, aged 48, was last seen by his girlfriend on 28 April 2013, at her house in Doherty St, Deer Park, when he told her he would return home in an hour. Mr Ganly’s phone and bank accounts have not been accessed since.

No need for speed By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO A POLICE pursuit through Melton last Wednesday led to officers discovering dangerous chemicals allegedly for a drug lab, hidden in the car. Dozens of firemen were called in to remove potentially dangerous chemicals from the vehicle, which was dumped in Burnside.

Officers started the chase in Melton early last Wednesday morning when they noticed a stolen car travelling along Exford Rd, but the pursuit was terminated soon after in neighbouring Burnside. Police then located the stolen vehicle on McGee Close and upon closer inspection discovered hazard-

ous materials inside. MFB and CFA crews were called to the scene to remove the materials from the car. Meanwhile, police from the Melton Burglary Unit are appealing for public assistance to locate a stolen jet-ski worth about $7000. Investigators believe a burglar broke into the garage of a house

on Stoke Heath Way in Caroline Springs sometime between 7am and 8pm last Monday week. Once inside, the thieves have stolen a Seadoo jet-ski, a continental box trailer and a number of power tools. Police are keen to speak to anyone that may have seen the jet-ski and trailer in the area and have released images of the stolen items.

Child rescue a warning By ALESHA CAPONE BRIMBANK City Council has passed its best wishes onto a young girl who was rescued from the Sunshine Leisure Centre’s pool during Melbourne’s heat wave. The accident occurred on Wednesday 16 January when the centre was inundated with visitors seeking relief from temperatures of up to 44 degrees. Brimbank City Council’s director of community wellbeing, Neil Whiteside, said the child was taken to hospital afterwards. “The little girl was rescued from the pool and the lifeguards administered first aid,” he said. “It is wonderful the young girl is making a full recovery and we wish her well. “This incident acts as a timely reminder how careful we must be and I urge all parents to remember that children must be supervised around water as accidents can happen very quickly and often without warning.” On a lighter note, police were also called to the leisure centre during the previous day when a 10-year-old boy bit his babysitter. No charges were laid after the incident. As the heat wave settled in across Brimbank, five snake sightings were reported to the council throughout the week. The council’s director of city development, Stuart Menzies, said the reptiles were observed in Sunshine, Sunshine North, Kealba, St Albans and Deer Park. “The most common snakes in Brimbank are the brown and tiger snakes,” Mr Menzies said. “Tiger snakes are generally frightened of you and will try to get away when approached or disturbed. “Brown snakes are very aggressive when disturbed or approached. “If you see a snake on your property, stay calm and call a professional wildlife controller or the council on 9249 4000.”

Angelic Nonna celebrates 100 years By ALESHA CAPONE GREAT-GRANDMOTHER Angela Bono is living life to the full as she approaches her 100th birthday. The Deer Park resident will celebrate her centenary on 5 February and her first great-great-grandchild is due to be born later that month. With 10 children, 25 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren, Mrs Bono has a brood of which she can be proud. She was born in the Italian town of St Ilario, Ionio, and raised in Bianco, Calabria. Mrs Bono has lived in Deer Park

for 58 years and was married to her late husband Domenic for more than seven decades. She married Domenic at the age of 19 and the pair were inseparable, enduring five years apart when Domenic was called up to serve in World War II. “She’s always said Dad was beautiful,” Mrs Bono’s daughter, Silvana, said. In 1951, Domenic migrated to Australia and his young family soon followed. Mrs Bono’s son, Tony, said at the time Deer Park consisted of open fields.

“When I came here at first I didn’t like it at all,” Mrs Bono said. “I said to my husband, ’You brought me to a paddock’.” Mrs Bono went on to work at Smorgans in Tottenham and at the Footscray fish market for more than 20 years, retiring at the age of 70. “You couldn’t keep her at home,” grand-daughter Cathy said. Tony said his mother loved cooking, preserving food and tending to her vegetable patch. “It was her passion,” Cathy said. “You would always see her in the garden with a pick.”

Mrs Bono is still able to thread needles to enjoy knitting, another hobby. “I don’t need glasses to see, I can see perfectly,” Mrs Bono said. Cathy said her grandmother’s advice for those wanting living a long life was to eat plenty of salt and olive oil. “No meat, lots of vegies and spaghetti, but not too much,” Mrs Bono said. Mrs Bono also belongs to the St Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Deer Park and its Italian Prayer Group. “She’s been going for 27 years and she’s never missed one session,” her daughter Pina said.

Teen star does Taylors Hill proud By ALESHA CAPONE TEENAGER Alana Kristen Ribarovska is proud to be representing her home suburb Taylors Hill in the Miss Teen Galaxy Pageant Australia 2014 as a Victorian finalist. The 15-year-old will participate in fashion, evening and swimwear segments at the annual competition. She will also be raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the lead-up to the event in March. Last year, Alana raised $1500 for charity with a trivia night during her maiden pageant. Alana made it through to the competition’s national finals last year and also won the Miss Macedonia Melbourne 2013 contest. Alana said she would be wearing a sash emblazoned with ‘Taylors Hill’ at the upcoming Miss Teen Galaxy. “I love it here. I know everyone, they know me and I feel safe here,” she said. Since last year’s competition, Alana has started modelling - including a photo shoot for Elements magazine in America and appearing in PixiFoto’s #Click Campaign. Alana said her confidence had grown since taking part in the 2013 Teen Galaxy event. “I enjoyed it heaps and loved everything about it,” she said. “Even raising the money, I had to increase my confidence and put myself out there and tell people I was entering the pageant.” This year she is looking forward to once again seeing all the friends she made in last year’s pageant. “I want to have fun, but I also want to see how far I can go,” she said. In addition, Alana is part of the student leadership team at Copperfield College in Sydenham and plays for the Sydenham Park Soccer Club. Alana is looking for a sponsor for the pageant. A WESTERN suburbs MP has called on the State Government to conduct a study to investigate how a proposed development could impact upon the Cairnlea Primary School and kindergartens. Last year, Places Victoria launched a proposal to build more than 146 townhouses, 50 apartments and 80 commercial mixed-use spaces on land bordered by Cairnlea Dve and Ballarat Rd. The application will also involve removing 300 mature sugar gum trees because they will pose a high risk to the people moving into Cairnlea’s new residential zone, according to a report from January 2012. More than 60 residents have signed a petition against the redevelopment and formed a group called No Industrial Zone for Cairnlea. In Parliament, MP Khalil Eideh appealed to the Minister for Planning to ask Places Victoria to restart the community consultation process on the project. Mr Eideh said the Government should “conduct a study on the impact the suggested proposal will have on the Cairnlea Primary School and Cairnlea kindergartens”.

In addition he labelled the development a “concrete jungle”. “It is a proposal that will see unlimited industrial factories constructed on the gateway to the Cairnlea housing estate and the destruction of valuable mature sugar gum trees,” Mr Eideh said “It completely ignores the promise made to residents that 30 per cent of Cairnlea would remain open space.” “More than 9000 people would be affected by the proposed development. “I have been advised that Places Victoria has now declared that there will be no industrial sites, but it will now push ahead for a commercial one and general residential zone. “That means it is now looking to build retail, office, and business developments and - wait for it - an entertainment centre! “The residents are asking, ‘will this mean a brothel or a night club?’” A Places Victoria spokesperson said after public consultation last year, it made changes to the draft masterplan for the Cairnlea site including increasing the proposed residential area and removing industrial land use areas.

AUSTRALIAN Women’s running champion Melissa Breen conducted a children’s athletics clinic before she competed in the 2014 St Albans Gift at the Kings Park Reserve. Sponsored by the St Albans Sports Club and Brimbank City Council, the Victorian Athletics League event attracted a large crowd of spectators and competitors. Ms Breen, who represented Australia at the London Olympic Games in the 100 metre and relay events, gave the youngsters some valuable tips about staying fit and running well. More than 70 contestants took part in the Gift including another Olympian, Brendan Cole, who competed in the 120m event. 112974 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT

Study into police relations By ALESHA CAPONE A LAWYER conducting research into experiences young African-Australians have with police has said she believes positive steps taken by authorities have improved the situation. Tallace Bissett is completing her PhD on the issue at the University of Melbourne. Ms Bissett said most of the stories she hears about police interaction with African-Australian youths centred on Sunshine, Flemington and Dandenong communities. She said statistics showed young African-Australians were under-represented in crime statistics but over-represented among people stopped in the streets by police. The issue has been in the spotlight again recently, after Victoria Police released a report following a 2013 Federal Court case accusing officers of racially profiling and harassing a group of African-Australian males in Flemington. Ms Bissett said this report was a step in the right direction because many youths want the situation to change. “There are a lot of smart young people who say, ‘We are part of the solution, we are not part of the problem’,” she said. “One theme is that it seems to be up to African communities to keep themselves out of trouble. “But people say to me, ‘I am doing all these things and I still get stopped’. “Particularly with people from an African background, they have sort-of been interested about the stuff we have

Petition backs aged-care centre By ALESHA CAPONE A PETITION has been submitted to State Parliament advocating against the possible privatisation or closure of a Keilor East aged-care facility. Pascoe Vale MP Christine Campbell delivered the petition, containing more than 130 signatures, to the Legislative Assembly of Victoria. Ms Campbell said the State Government has moved to privatise the public sector aged care sector, which puts Cyrill Jewel House in Keilor East “at risk of privatisation or closure”. “Despite an ageing population, the Baillieu-Napthine government have closed public

sector aged-care facilities in Ballarat, Castlemaine, Koroit, Kyneton, Melbourne and Williamstown and privatised one facility in Rosebud,” Ms Campbell said. “The 2012/13 Victorian state budget update foreshadows cuts to public sector aged care of $25 million in 2014/15 and $50 million in 2015/16.” However, a State Government spokesperson has disputed Ms Campbell’s claims and said the future of the state’s nursing homes was yet to be determined. “No decisions have been made about individual sites or number of places,” she said. “The government is exploring how a reallocation of public

aged care places to not-for-profit and other aged care providers might support better facilities, growing places and the delivery of the right tailored level of care. “We are establishing a panel comprising of highly-qualified and experienced potential providers that are interested in and capable of delivering high-quality residential aged care services. “Special consideration will be given to specialist aged care services, particularly in mental health. “Non-government providers must show that they can provide for the places they are seeking to have reallocated to them, and that they can fully care for the needs of residents.”

Man charged over alleged soccer brawl A ST ALBANS resident is among a group charged by police following an alleged soccer brawl in Melbourne on 28 December. The 25-year-old has been charged with affray and weapons-related offences after the alleged fight between rival soccer team supporters, which took place in Bourke St outside licensed premises. Last week police executed a search warrant in Corunna Ave,

St Albans, before the man was arrested. A 21-year-old Jan Juc man has also been charged with affray and weapons-related offences. Both men have been bailed by police to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court at a later date. Three people were treated at the scene for injuries suffered during the alleged brawl and

one person was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police have charged five other males in relation to the alleged fight, including a Kingsville teenager. Melbourne Recidivist Tasking Unit members are continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with any information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE TAYLORS LAKES HOTEL

JBJs Taylors Hill residents Adam and Tracey Humphries are thrilled their youngest son Tobiah, pictured with siblings Charlotte and Noah, has progressed well since he was born with Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI Spina Bifida a year ago. 113267

WHEN little Tobiah celebrates his first birthday this week, the happy event will also be raising funds for a worthy cause. Tobiah’s parents, Adam and Tracey Humphries, have asked party guests to make donations to the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) instead of bringing presents to celebrate their youngest son turning one on 29 January. Mrs Humphries said with a “house full of toys” and Christmas barely a month ago, they are keen to help out the hospital where Toby - as he is fondly called - has spent so much time. While Mrs Humphries was pregnant, doctors diagnosed Toby with Spina Bifida and said he might never be able to walk. The day after he was born,

Toby spent five hours in surgery to fix a hole in his back and have a shunt inserted in his brain to help drain a fluid buildup into his stomach, so it could be absorbed. In June last year, Toby returned to the RCH for more surgery after a regular neurosurgeon’s appointment discovered a problem with the shunt. However, much to the joy of his parents and siblings, threeyear-old Noah and six-year-old Charlotte, Toby quickly recovered from his operation. “He’s very chilled out. All the doctors and physios comment on how happy he is and how he doesn’t cry if they ask him to do things,” Mrs Humphries said. Rev Humphries, who is minister of the Brimbank Presbyterian Church, said Toby was

“very social” and made many friends among parishioners. The plucky toddler is already feeding himself, rolling around and pulling himself into sitting positions. For a while, Toby had to wear gloves to help train him to put his thumbs out rather than keeping them close to his hands. He has also had work done so his legs will not turn inwards. He’s done better than we ever expected,” Rev Humphries said. “We are just grateful to the church who have been understanding as well.” Mrs Humphries said Charlotte and Noah were protective of their little brother. “They’re forever fighting over who gets to play with him and who gets to sit next to him in the car,” she said.

A taste of pasta class By ALESHA CAPONE SALLY’S pasta-making workshops at the Delahey Community Centre are a source of scrumptious sustenance. The Bacchus Marsh resident will be teaching a workshop at the centre in March, following on from the success of a similar session she conducted last year. “It’s just one of the many things I cook,” Sally said. “I always cooked when I was a child with my Nan and my Mum’s a good cook too. “I just love cooking and I like new challenges. “My husband loves pasta so he’s happy.” Sally said some of her cooking students from last year would return to this year’s class. “It got them inspired and it’s good to see them walk out and be proud of what they have made,” she said. “I think it’s satisfying learning new skills and know they can do it at home, at any time. “I think people think making pasta is harder than it really is. “They turn up and are surprised that it’s easier than they thought.” Sally also teaches flowerarranging - and how to make candles, soap and body products - at the Sydenham Community Centre. In addition her busy schedule includes acting as an instructor at children’s cooking classes at the Delahey Community Centre. “The kids think it’s great,” she said. “They can take their cre-

Aidan lands on the screen By ALESHA CAPONE A YOUNG St Albans resident is flying high on the success of his YouTube videos. Ten-year-old Aidan has an internet channel featuring reports focusing on the latest aircraft and airline news, especially his favourite carrier Emirates. Altogether, his clips have been viewed more than 300 times by people from across the world. “I was a bit amazed at how many people were watching my videos,” Aidan said. The Grade 6 pupil said he started doing the reports at the suggestion of his father.

“When we were coming back from a trip I suddenly got interested in planes,” Aidan said. “I just like the experience of flying and travelling.” The youngster is a seasoned traveller, with trips to Canada, New Zealand, Italy, Austria and Slovenia on his itinerary. Aidan said he filmed the reports with a video camera and edited the footage on a computer. He researches his reports on the internet and prepares a script before filming. “I have a little sheet. I look at it and then I look at the camera,” Aidan said.

“I think the best thing is to put some excitement into it.” Aidan said his latest video, which includes ‘fun facts’ about the featured aircraft A320, has been his favourite so far. “I think it’s the funniest and best, and has the most excitement in it,” he said. Aidan said he has not yet decided what career he wants to pursue, but is contemplating a job involving plenty of travel. “I’d like to maybe be a pilot or someone who works overseas,” he said. He also enjoys playing the piano and working with computers.

Medicare petition opposes GP fees

William is prince of names By ALESHA CAPONE YOUNG William is in good company, with his name topping the list of most popular boy’s names in Victoria for 2013. The Minister for Planning, Matthew Guy, recently announced the most popular baby’s names in Victoria during last year. William and Charlotte took first place on the list for each gender, toppling the 2012 leaders of Jack and Olivia. Three-year-old William, a Tullamarine resident, said he liked his name. His mother, Amanda Issa, affectionately calls her son ‘Billy bear’. “When we found out we were having a boy, we knew we were naming him William and that was it,” she said. “It’s just a really classic name. It won’t go out of style and it has got a nice presence to it, I think it’s one of those names for all age groups. “I’ve always liked the way it sounds.” Ms Issa said although there was a lot of media attention on Prince

The proposal, to charge patients an up-front fee of $6 fee to visit a GP, has also been slammed by the Australian Medical Association. Prime Minister Tony Abbott has received the proposal through a nation-wide Commission of Audit. Mr O’Connor said for almost 30 years, Medicare has been making healthcare affordable for all Australians but this was “now under threat from Mr Abbott and his government”. “I believe that all Australians deserve the healthcare they need, not the care they can afford,” said Mr O’Connor. “I have heard from many of my constituents about their concerns that the government is planning to put a tax on going to the doctor, and that healthcare for them and their family will become unaffordable.” Under the scheme, pensioners and concession card holders would be exempt from the fee. Families would be granted up to 12 bulk-billed visits annually. “The Abbott Government has already hit Australians hard, with the biggest increase to private health insurance premiums in a decade,” Mr O’Connor said. “Once the GP tax is introduced, I have no doubt the Abbott Government will open the floodgate to annual increases, making it tougher for families already struggling with the cost of living.”

William’s marriage to Kate Middleton in 2011 and the birth of their son George last year, this was not the reason she chose the royal name for her son. “I think it’s one of those names which really stands the test of time,” she said. “No-one in our family has that name and I think it will give him his own sense of identity.” Other popular boy’s names from last year included Oliver, Ethan, Thomas and James. Among the most prevalent girl’s names were Ava, Mia, Emily and Sophie. The state Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages reported 47 girls names and 67 boys names were registered 100 times or more during 2013. Director Erin Keleher said parents chose names for reasons including honouring their family, tradition and popular culture.

A NEW Sunshine rail footbridge has been opened to the public three weeks ahead of schedule. The structure, built between the HV McKay Memorial Gardens and Harvester Rd, was actually scheduled to open during February. The bridge has been named after Sunshine’s well-known industrialist and founding father HV McKay. The bridge was constructed as part of the Regional Rail Link project construction. With a 66-metre span, the bridge is now long enough to accommodate the extra tracks built on the rail corridor. A number of suggestions from community groups have been included in the bridge’s design. Authorities have said work will continue on the bridge and at times there may be short-term closures, to ensure safety. The bridge is expected to be finished by the end of April and will provide improved access for pedestrians, cyclists and people with a disability, with the addition of lifts as well as stairs. Regional Rail Link works from Footscray to Deer Park are being delivered by an alliance consisting of Thiess, Balfour Beatty, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Sinclair Knight Merz, Regional Rail Link Authority, Metro and V/Line.

KENDARA Calisthenics College is a place where youngsters can hone their skills as well as make lifelong friends in the process. Calisthenics is an Australian team sport, combining exercise and gymnastics, marching, singing, ballet, folk and modern dance and promotes health and fitness to all involved. Age groups range from Tinies, seven years and younger, sub-juniors, 10 years and younger, juniors, 13 years and younger, Inters up to 16 years and seniors 16 years and over. Kendara was established in 2003. Its participants train in Keilor at Brimbank Anglican Church. Over the years, trainers have seen a growing number of families across the Brimbank

and Melton areas participate within the club. Training is once a week, and youngsters take part in five competitions per year from February through to November. There are qualified coaches, many of whom have competed at the highest level and in State teams, and classes focus on fun, fitness and teamwork. Children of all abilities are encouraged to participate. Kendara president Nerida Burnham says Calisthenics isn’t as well represented in North West region as compared to South and East regions and Kendara is committed to serving this area. “Kendara is a lovely family focused club. Often in any given year, we can have a few sis-

ters in various teams, a mother helping with co-ordination and a father helping with props.” “It is often the case with Calisthenics that once you join; it is very hard to leave. This is due to the great camaraderie shared with teammates and the development of a wide range of skills. It really is a friends for life kind of sport. We have seen girls start at five years in Tinies who are now in our Inters section at 15. It is so nice to see their evolution from the beginning as a new pupil to develop their skills to become not only a beautiful Calisthenics girl, but also lovely young adults,” she says. For any inquiries, email kendaracc@gmail.com or contact Nerida on 0421 078 468.

Dance fine-tuned over the decades

Romina’s Dance in Keilor Park and Greenvale have been tapping the dance artistic potential in children for over two decades

FOR more than two decades, Romina Di Sauro has been putting her heart and soul into making her school, Romina’s Dance in Keilor Park and Greenvale, the best they can be. And she’s certainly taken the right steps to achieve this, with more than 400 students now learning from a talented team how to dance with joy and confidence. ‘‘Our team is not only dedicated to increasing our students’ confidence levels and tapping into artistic potential, they also make our schools funfilled places that encourage the transformation process we inevitably see,’’ says Romina. ‘‘Whether students, from as young as two through to adults - male and female - just want to dance for fun or look to take their dancing to the next level, we cater for everyone’s needs.’’ Dance classes provide a wide range of styles: modern jazz, tap, contemporary, ballet, hip-hop, break dance, Latin, acrobatics, technique, kinder dance, singing and private lessons. Birthday parties can also be held at the Keilor Park studio. Romina explains there are competition classes for students who want to take their dancing further. Students get lots of chances to compete in other competitions around Australia. Opportunities to perform are plentiful, with dancers participating in events such as the Royal Melbourne Show, Myer Christmas parade, Chinese New Year celebrations, Olympics festivities and at AFL grand finals. Television commercials, tribute shows, corporate functions, nightclub and bar events, birthday parties, basketball games, receptions, expos and charity events all provide

Brimbank’s rich diversity BRIMBANK is the second largest municipality in Melbourne and the largest in the Western Region. The City of Brimbank is located in the western and north-western suburbs of Melbourne, between 11 and 23 kilometres west and north-west of Melbourne CBD. The City of Brimbank was formed on 15 December 1994, following the amalgamation of the former cities of Keilor and Sunshine. It encompasses 25 new and established suburbs including Albion, Cairnlea, Deer Park, Delahey, Hillside, Keilor, Kings Park, St Albans,

Sunshine, Sydenham and Taylors Lakes. Much of the recent residential growth has been in Delahey, Sydenham, Taylors Lakes, and more recently in Cairnlea. The city is one of the fastest growing areas in the state and growth is expected to continue, particularly in Deer Park, Derrimut and Cairnlea through the redevelopment of older residential and industrial sites. In 2011, the total population of Brimbank was estimated to be 191,084 people. It is expected to increase by over 13,000 people to 204,100 by 2021, at an average annual growth rate of 0.66

per cent. This is based on an increase of over 7900 households during the period, with the average number of persons per household falling from 2.93 to 2.78 by 2021. Brimbank prides itself on its cultural diversity and is one of Victoria’s most culturally diverse municipalities, having embraced more than 156 nationalities from around the globe. It has a rich Indigenous history and the Kulin nation of peoples are acknowledged as the traditional owners of the land and that the Indigenous community has the right to self -determination. The municipality lies within the area occupied by the Kurung-Jang-Balluk and Marin-Balluk clans of the Wurundjeri people (also known as the Woiwurung language group) who form part of the larger Kulin Nation. Other groups who occupied land in the area include the Yalukit-Willam and Marpeang-Bulluk clans. Visit www.brimbank.vic.gov.au for more information.

Star… Connecting people with the local sport they love.

Jake Haberfield celebrates one of his 36 Premier Cricket wickets with team-mates. 110197. Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI

Putting the bite back in the Bulldogs LIAM TWOMEY THIS time last year, there wasn’t much to celebrate for Footscray Edgewater. The Bulldogs were out of the Victorian Premier Cricket finals race and finished the season a disappointing 12th on the ladder. But if a week is a long time in sport, what can happen in the space of 12 months is staggering. Following its smashing of Melbourne Uni last week, Footscray is on top of the Premier Cricket table and is a genuine premiership contender. The club has gone toe-to-toe with the cream of the crop and walked away with the chocolates on 12 of 14 occasions. But according to the man in charge, Footscray Edgewater chairman Geoff Collinson, the job isn’t over yet. Collinson has been rapt with his side’s turnaround in form which coincided with master coach Steven Chapman joining the club in the off-season. Chapman previously coached Premier Cricket rival Dandenong to a premiership and he has wasted no time working similar magic at Farnsworth Avenue. Footscray is now setting its sights on making an impact at the business end of the season. “At the start of the season we thought we would have a team capable of playing finals,” Collinson said. “Now with the way the team has come together and

Footscray Edgewater coach Steven Chapman speaking to Dylan Kight and Hamish Winter-Irving earlier in the season. 107204. Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI the recruitment of a couple of players, we have probably got a team that is capable of playing at the pointy end of the season. “Steven (Chapman) has had a terrific impact on the playing group and the club as a whole. His knowledge of cricket is incredibly deep and his experience of being an ex-county player and having been a successful coach both here and overseas is fantastic.” Leading the charge on field and instilling fear into batsmen everywhere has been Bulldogs’ opening bowler Jake Haberfield. The gun quick joined Footscray from South Australia in what has proved to be a recruiting masterstroke. Haberfield has taken 36 wickets at an average of 15.50 and has batsmen throughout the competition wondering if there is anything worse than seeing the tear-away quick steaming in.

But they need wonder no more with Haberfield likely to be sharing the new ball with worldclass speedster John Hastings for finals. “Having a look at the fixture, if we can get through the quarterfinals stage it looks like we may get John Hastings back,” Collinson said. “He is obviously a great bowler, having played for Australia last season but at our level of cricket he is a genuine number four batsman as well. “When you’ve got John Hastings and Jake Haberfield opening the bowling, it is going to send a few shivers through a lot of opposition batsmen.” While the playing list continues to develop at a rate of knots, Footscray believe many of its stars are ready to make an impact on the game at the next level.

Haberfield has been selected for the Victorian Sheffield Shield side during the season and is contracted to the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League. His team-mates, Dean Russ and Dylan Kight, have been regulars in the Bushrangers’ second XI and Guy Walker will represent Australia at under-19 level next month. With the stage set for an exciting end to the 2013/14 season for Footscray, the club is also keeping a close eye on the future to ensure its stay at the top end of the ladder is a long one. Last year Footscray launched its Bulldogs Academy, which is designed to develop all the best cricketing talent throughout Melbourne’s Western Suburbs. “It (the Bulldogs Academy) is really unique. We are the only club in Australia to do it,” Collinson said. “First and foremost, we see that we have a community responsibility to develop cricket in the area. “Obviously we are going to be a beneficiary of that with the half a dozen elite kids coming through the club. “We have also got a responsibility to all the subDistrict clubs and all the local clubs to try and make their players better and make the competition better so it becomes just as strong as anything in Melbourne.”

John Hastings may return for Footscray Edgewater’s finals assault. 93349. Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI

Geoff Collinson on: The 2012/13 season: “I felt like we should have made the finals last year with the talent that we had in the team. It was very clear to me and the committee and we believed we had a better team than where we finished.” The leadership of Captain Dean Russ: “Dean is a terrific leader in all respects. He is a born and bred Bulldog boy. He captained our Dowling Shield team, his dad is a life-member, ex-president and ex-first XI member. He is Bulldog through and through and his performances as captain have been outstanding.” Bulldogs playing at the next level: “Dean Russ and Dylan Kight, I think are performing at the levels where it is surprising that the Vics haven’t picked them. Guy Walker has just been picked in the Australian under-19s tour, which is the second or third time he has been selected at that level. He has also got a rookie contract with Victoria so they obviously have their eye on him.”

Fleming’s the man By ADEM SARICAOGLU JEFFREY Fleming will be the man to lead the Green Gully Cavaliers forward once more in 2014. Fleming, still an active player in the Cavaliers’ squad, took over the coaching reins from Dean Hennessy through the middle of last season. The club last week confirmed it has applied to be part of the new National Premier League being introduced in Victoria. But the Cavaliers will not know where they’ll be playing until Football Federation Victoria confirms successful NPL applicants in early February. After successfully turning Green Gully’s fortunes around and earning a finals berth in 2013, Fleming is now looking forward to doing it all again as a playing coach this coming season. “The body feels OK and I still enjoy playing so I’m happy to still be playing,” Fleming said. “We don’t quite know what’s happening but assuming everything goes well on the (NPL) front, I’m looking forward to the challenge and the season starting.” Fleming will again be assisted from the sideline by Aaron Symons, while Frankie Lagana and Peter Zois will also be part of the coaching

Jeffrey Fleming on the ball against Oakleigh during last year’s Victorian Premier Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT League season. 97497 panel. Fleming said he was pleased to have Symons by his side once more after the pair combined well in 2013. “It’s a really good thing for me and the club that Aaron’s staying on because of his experience,” Fleming said.

“We’re just looking to continue working together and get the most out of the players and obviously get some positive results.” The Cavaliers have not yet begun signing any new players and have so far only released Hamid Basma, who

chose to retire, from last year’s squad. While Fleming said a few changes may occur once Green Gully knows its NPL fate, for now at least, he expects to go into the new season with a very similar squad to the one he led in 2013.

New era for Knights By ADEM SARICAOGLU ANDREW Marth hopes his Melbourne Knights will be part of the National Premier League this year. Marth, who led the Knights to the Victorian Premier League finals series in 2013, has been reappointed as senior coach for the upcoming season and will again be joined by senior assistant, Frank Juric. While the Knights will not know if they will be part of the NPL until next month, Marth is hoping, at the very least, for another top six finish in 2014. “First and foremost we want to get into the top six if the top six is still available,” Marth said. “I don’t know how the new set-up will be in the NPL, but we want top six and then obviously build on that. “I certainly believe we’ve got a good enough squad to get there, that’s being realistic. “In an ideal world I’d like to get to first or second, but we’re aiming for top six.” The Knights have not yet named any major signings and are not planning to make wholesale changes to the squad that finished second in the old VPL last season. Adam Zilic and Matt Hrastov will both not be returning for the Knights this year, while striker Andrew Barisic has moved on to Hong Kong club, South China. Marth confirmed there may be a couple of newcomers who may potentially sign in coming weeks, however the coach is comfortable

with the talent currently at his disposal. “We’re not after a huge squad, but we are after a quality squad,” Marth said. “I’m more than certain that we’ll retain 95 per cent of our players and possibly sign one or two more players and I’ll be very happy with that.” Marth said the key area to bolster will be up front, following Barisic’s departure. “Our finishing qualities were not up to what I expected last year,” Marth said. “Our defensive capabilities and midfield were exceptional as well as Chris May in goal, so we’ve got to work on our finishing and I think that’s what cost us the title last year.”

Celebrities pitch in HOW’S this for a mouth-watering clash? Wayne Carey, Chris Johnson, Phil Krakouer, Paul Williams and Aaron Davey going toe-to-toe with Simon MintonConnell, Nathan Lovett-Murray, Paul Dimattina and Simon Madden. But there won’t be any high flying marks or magical goals from the boundary line. These former AFL stars will be joined by other celebrities for the St Albans Sports Club Celebrity Bash cricket match on Sunday.

“We have been inundated with interest which has been great,” St Albans Sports Club administration officer Belinda Keenan said. “All the players are excited. The uniforms look amazing and everything is coming along really well. “So far there has really been an incredible response to it. All the celebrities are giving up their time for free. We are really thrilled and hoping it will continue for many years to come.” The blockbuster match is raising funds for Indigenous radio station 3KND and Scope Australia, which helps people

In memory of a mate THE 13th annual Peter Bunworth Memorial cricket match between Hoppers Crossing and Wyndhamvale is on this Sunday at the new and improved Hogans Road Reserve from 11am. The format is a 30-over game for over35s and there will be a barbecue lunch. If you want more details contact Bernie Moynahan on 0417 509 411. As I have written on countless occasions Peter was a terrific bloke and a real character that is sadly missed in local sport. Hoppers Crossing also has its past players day on Saturday 8 February. The seniors will be playing Old Mentonians and cost is $10 for the barbecue lunch. Contact Darren Hellmann on 0413 607 645. PORT Melbourne Colts Football Club is looking forward to a successful year in the WRFL under new coach Jason Love and will be kicking off the season in style with a ‘Best of the Best Night”. The event is on Saturday 15 March at the St Kilda Town Hall in Carlisle St and will be hosted by SEN’s David Schwarz. It is a formal night and costs $125 per person for beer, wine, soft drinks and a three-course meal. The highlight of the night will be the naming of the Colts’ greatest ever side and the teams of the decades. I have been watching Colts close up since working for the WRFL and I can tell you it will be a nightmare picking a team of the 2000’s. Names like Clarke, Lindsay, Jacob, Julier, Hoath, Webb, Massis, Twomey, De Bruyn, Caddy, Winters, Brannan, Cox, Stevens, O’Neill, Braken, Glad I am not on the selection panel. For bookings and more details contact Brad Julier on 0438 601 063. THE Tarneit Titans, the newest club in the WRFL, is holding its family day this Sunday at its new facilities and ovals at Wootten Rd Reserve in Tarneit. You can join some AFL and VFL players who will be there and watch the Titans’ senior team train. For the kids there is jumping castles, face painting and fairy floss.

with a disability participate in sporting competitions. “We will be having a gold coin donation bucket throughout the day because it is free entry,” Keenan said. “At the end of the day we will be auctioning off some signed shirts so if people want to bid for those they can and then we will have a band on at the club rooms at the end of the night. It’s set up to be a great day.” The Celebrity Bash will kick off at 2pm on Sunday 2 February at Kings Park Reserve, Gillespie Rd, St Albans.

The day will go from 10am till 2pm and for more information contact enquiries@tarneittitansfc.com.au It is a tough and time consuming job starting up a club from scratch and I wish them well and anything this columnist can do to help is always there. FORMER Hammerheads president and now world-wide Australian Day Lambassador Sam Kekovich joined me on SEN last weekend for a chat and what a funny and entertaining man he is. Given how busy Sam was with his Australia Day activities he was happy to take my call and have a chat. He is the host of a big Sportsman’s Day this Sunday for the Grand United Cricket Club at Parsons Reserve in Sunshine from 11am. Sam will introduce Barry Hall and Dayne Beams plus tell a few of his own stories. Tickets are $30 at the door with finger food and drinks at bar prices. There will be a raffle and an auction as well. Contact Daniel on 0416 147 725 for any inquiries. GREAT to see Williamstown boy Andrew Whittington make it through to the quarter finals of the Australian Open doubles last week. Andrew is only 20 and his doubles ranking will be inside the top 100 in the world after his performance. Andrew is coached by John Trickey who is director of coaching at Bayside Tennis School in Williamstown. The school still has a few vacancies available for 2014 and it is not too late for students to enrol. Tennis is over and the major cricket competitions are about to end which means it is less than two weeks until the footy is back.
