Tanya’s top day A VOLUNTEER with decades of community work under her belt got a special birthday gift on 26 January, receiving the Yarra Ranges Council’s Citizen of the Year Award.

Kilsyth’s Tanya De Visser celebrated her 40th birthday on Australia Day this year and took out the council’s top Australia Day award for her tireless work to help her community.

Her award was handed down in an Australia Day Awards ceremony on 26 January at the Yarra Glen Memorial Hall, where mayor Fiona McAllister recognised the achievements of com-

munity members. Ms De Visser has spent the last 20 years volunteering for Montrose’s Japara Neighbourhood House, Friends of Elizabeth Bridge and Kilsyth Township Group (ROCK).

She said she was surprised to receive the letter, informing her of her award, and modestly added that she thought other volunteers would have been more deserving.

However, the community lies close to Ms De Visser’s heart, and she said that some of her first interactions with Japara Community House helped her to gain a job in a large bank. “Ever since then, I’ve wanted to give back to the local community, so

that people could have the same opportunities I’ve had,� she said. “For me, volunteering is a family value - that’s what my family does. “I hope that more people do volunteer - you get so much out of it.�

Ms De Visser has been a member of the Friends of Elizabeth Bridge group since 2005 and a member of the Kilsyth Township Group since it began in 2006.

Over that time, she said that some of her proudest moments with the township group would be working on two murals that were at the Eastern Ranges Football Club’s walls and a public toilet block - with both of the

would like to see more money to invest in their communities via community centres and small grants to the group. “Giving the community their community centres and even helping with small grants goes a long way to what people want to achieve for their communities,� she said.

In terms of the future, Ms De Visser said that Japara Neighbourhood House was working with the council on a new living and learning centre worth around $5 million.

She said that her favourite thing about the Yarra Ranges was the amount of people who volunteer their time for community causes. “You go to so many functions and meet so many people and see the amount of residents within the shire of Yarra Ranges that volunteer,� she said. “They have the same values as you do - they value the community and they’re passionate about what they do. “Finding that in a community or a township is absolutely amazing.�

Ms Benson said first and foremost when saying ‘yes’ to a foster child she takes into account how her decision will affect her own children.

“Anglicare is fantastic as they encourage us to think about who we are taking on and how it may possibly affect the dynamic of our family,” she said.

Ms Benson said she was inspired to become a foster carer after meeting a lady in Healesville who fostered Indigenous children as well as caring for her own six children.

“When I met her I just thought, ‘wow, you are awesome’,” she said.

“She never stressed about anything and I really took a leaf out of her book.”

Anglicare Victoria Spokesperson Bronwyn Kellett said ideally carers are needed to support children between the ages of four and 12 years for all types of placements including respite, short term (up to three months) and longer term (up to six months) stays.

Local Mount Evelyn Family Debbie and Adrian Benson with their two boys Kane, 15, and Max, 10, opened their home three years ago to foster children in the area.

Mrs Benson said she wanted to give back to those who do not come from a household as well off as them.

“I wanted to show much my boys that not everyone lives the way we live,” she said.

“I wanted to teach them that if there are people in the community that need help they should stand up and lend a helping hand.”

Ms Kellett said for many

children in care, a new school year may mean a new family, new friends and a completely new life.

“Children in care are some of the most vulnerable in the community,” she said.

“They move school often and they are usually behind academically so they are always feeling like the ‘new kid’.”

Ms Kellett said these children can often catch up with their peers and thrive emotionally with the right stability and support.

“That’s what foster carers do,” she said.

“They provide a supportive, secure and safe environment to come home to at the end of the school day.”

Carers can be single, de

facto or married, with or without their own children that are working or at home.

All prospective carers must pass required checks, attend training and undergo an accreditation process.

MOUNT Evelyn’s plan of action for 2014 will be discussed at Mount Evelyn Township Planning Day next month.

The annual event is an opportunity for all community members, groups and interested persons to come and discuss all things Mount Evelyn.

Morrisons CEO Jan Simmons said the main purpose of the event was to provide an opportunity for the community to have a voice about the things they feel important.

“This allows us to create a plan and be able to take action in the following year and beyond,” she said.

“On the night, we reflect on what we have done in the community over the last year and about the value of working in partnership and how to best utilise resources in our community.

“We also talk about issues and highlight what needs more

attention in our town.”

Ms Simmons said what makes the event unique is the attendance of school leaders to share their thoughts and visions for the community.

These include representatives from Yarra Hills Secondary College, Mount Evelyn Primary School, Birmingham Primary School and Saint Mary’s Primary School.

“We are really proud that leaders from the local schools who take part in the discussion - they have always been great participants over the last few years,” she said.

“At the event, no one is more important than the next person so everyone has a valued voice.”

Ms Simmons highlighted the importance of ensuring all voices are heard in the planning of Mount Evelyn.

“When we first started hosting the night many years ago

we initially had only 12 people in attendance - we now have about 100,” she said.

“It really shows the value of the night as people wouldn’t come if results weren’t being shown.

“People are now getting that this is a good occasion to be a part of.”

The event is sponsored by Mount Evelyn and Districts Community Bank and managed by Mount Evelyn Township Improvement Committee (METIC).

Mount Evelyn Township Planning Day will be held at Yarra Hills Performing Arts Centre, Old Hereford Road, Mount Evelyn on Wednesday 12 February at 6.30pm.

“However, because of the carelessness of our previous one-off hirers it is no longer worth it for the RSL to do this anymore.

“It’s really sad it has come to this but it really isn’t worth our while anymore.”

President Roger Boness said the RSL had paid out more than $20,000 over the last few years to improve the hall with new air-conditioning units and kitchen installed to upgrade facilities. He said although the RSL did rely on private hirers, now the eight community groups that use the hall throughout the week keep the hall afloat.

“We know we can trust the community groups to always make sure the hall is left in a clean and tidy state,” he said.

Mr McAleer said the Mount Evelyn Scouts had also had similar issues with the hiring of their hall but they were unable to comment by the time the Mail went to print.

At the December club meeting, members voted unanimously to no longer hire the hall out after the one-off users were not following bond agreements over an 18-month period.

Mount Evelyn RSL Secretary Anthony McAleer said after a 60th birthday party toilet handles were found smashed and after an engagement party the RSL’s wheelchair was found broken - these just two occurrences on a long list of issues.

Mr McAleer said although these groups pay bonds to cover the club in the event of damage, each time it happened it required volunteering members to do the extra work to rectify.

Plans for Aldi store are back on hold

A SHOT was fired from a rifle when a group of four men took justice into their own hands last week. Police have charged four men after they visited a Yellingbo property believing the resident had stolen their property in an earlier burglary.

Lilydale CIU Detective Senior Constable Mark Smithwick said one of the men had fired a shot with a .22 rifle when they arrived at the address.

“They’ve taken matters into their own hands,” Sen Cons Smithwick said.

“And now they are facing the courts.”

He said the four men were charged with common law assault and reckless conduct endangering life. They will face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 5 May.

Fire danger warning THE Fire Danger Period has begun, and police are reminding residents that they are no longer able to burn off in the Yarra Ranges.

THE Monbulk Aldi development is back on hold as the Yarra Ranges Council and other involved parties head back to VCAT. The council confirmed that they would go back to VCAT in the next few weeks in relation to amended plans to remove two shops at the front of the development.

In September, the Mail reported that Aldi had chosen to appeal the planning permit that was issued.

“The appeal is limited to specific conditions on the permit, namely setback distances of buildings to specific trees, and the installation of roller shutters/gates on the basement carpark and loading bay,” Yarra Ranges Shire director of Planning, Building and Health, Andrew Paxton said in September.

“Council’s planning department seeks to work with big business in a number of towns and areas in Yarra Ranges to encourage local employment and activity in these towns.

“In this case, Aldi has been given the certainty of being issued with a planning permit by the council.”

Mr Paxton said Aldi decided not to agree with a very limited number of matters on the permit, mostly relating to trees.

A GROUP’S battle against blackberries has been boosted by a $20,000 spraying rig, with Yarra Valley towns set to benefit from the new equipment.

Chairman of the Northern Yarra Blackberry Action Group Michael Nardella said the group had received the rig earlier in the month, with funding coming from a number of sources.

He said the rig can carry 600 litres of spray, can cover up to 200 metres per tank with two remote-control reels and will be used to eradicate blackberries

in properties under the group’s weeding program. “It’s a compact unit, so it can get into tight corners, and it’s relatively lightweight,� Mr Nardella said.

He said that properties in Steels Creek, Dixons Creek, Chum Creek and northern areas of the valley would be part of the group’s work, with collaboration between the group, Melbourne Water, Parks Victoria, VicRoads, Yarra Ranges Council and the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI).

Mr Nardella said the aim is

to work down the water courses, spraying properties on public and private land, with residents often taking action themselves to get rid of blackberries - once they have completed a course to safely handle the sprays. “We assess where the most need is and where we can be most effective - we chose to work from the top-end down,� he said. “However, we still have a lot of work to do.�

According to Mr Nardella, about 2700 hectares of property is currently under the group’s program.

Healesville School Picnic THE annual picnic of the Healesville district schools will be held at Mordialloc on Wednesday February 7 and promises to be the best yet.

Heat over fire ban date

By KATH GANNAWAY A NUMBER of calls to Yarra Valley fire brigades in the lead-up to the introduction of the official fire danger period in Yarra Ranges has called into question the timing of the summer fire restrictions.

The Mail spoke to a number of brigades who received calls from nervous residents worried about people burning off on the Saturday and Sunday following the week of high temperatures culminating with the Total Fire Ban on Friday 17 January.

With fires burning around the state, CFA District 13 operations manager David Renkin says he can understand why people would be nervous.

“I think the arguments are more economic because the restrictions put on industries in terms of what they can and can’t do,” he said.

But according to a number of other brigades the Mail spoke to, including Yarra Glen, Hillcrest, Yarra Junction and Seville, the timing this year is right.

“You get those calls with someone burning off a bit of rubbish and you think “would I really have done that”, but people are quite within their rights to burn off. A lot of people do think

about the conditions and whether it’s a bit too dangerous, but others will do it if they’re allowed, but this year, I think there is still a lot of green around the area and the CFA got the timing right,” he said.

Former captain of Hillcrest, Rick Shaw, said there was a narrow window of opportunity for people to burn off in the Yarra Valley and bringing in the restrictions at a set time would restrict opportunities to burn rubbish or patches of bush which would ultimately make their properties safer when the real danger period set in.

“You don’t have to have the fire danger period proclaimed to control those peak danger periods, a Total Fire Ban can be put on at any time if you get a bad period like we had last

week,” he said.

Mr Renkin said he relied on local knowledge with representatives of brigades involved in assessing the curing and conditions, which are assessed across the shire from Matlock to the Dandenong Ranges and the Yarra Valley.

“It’s about preventing fire in the landscape, and it’s about people being able to reduce their fuel loads as well.

“We could pick a date, but it needs to be more condition-assessed than a date we pick out of the air and stop people burning off,” he said.

With the fire danger period now in operation, no fire can be lit in the open air without a written permit from the CFA or a Municipal Fire Prevention Officer.

Wine growers survive heatwave

WINE growers across the Yarra Valley escaped with grape crops mostly unscathed from January’s blistering heat wave, with good irrigation and vine cover contributing to a lack of losses this summer.

The heatwave, which saw temperatures soar above 40 degrees between 14-17 January, left little impact on Yarra Valley wineries, according to Yarra Valley Wine Growers’ Association CEO Richard Howden.

Mr Howden said that, while the heatwave saw an unusuallylong period of hot weather, wine growers were ready for the extreme heat, with plenty of water on-hand.

“We had such a good period running into that, with quite wet dams, which meant that vineyards were able to guard against it (the heat), which was good,” Mr Howden said.

Mr Howden said that there were roughly losses of 5-10 per cent in wineries, but that the number depended on the placement of vineyards and whether they bore the brunt of the hot afternoon sun.

Yileena Park winery owner Bob Curtis said that his grapevines had held up well, due to watering, irrigation and not trimming the vines before the heatwave.

“If you look at some wineries, they’ve been hedged - they trim the tops and sides to allow more light in,” he said.

“But I’m a bit wary of doing that too soon - you get a couple of really hot days and the fruit’s exposed - I don’t want them to end up with sunburn.

“We held up really well.”

He said there was adequate water on hand and that the heatwave had been managed well for wineries in the area.

Water release for river health A RELEASE of 2.5 billion litres of water from the Upper Yarra Dam is underway to help keep the Yarra River healthy and maintain habitat.

The Yarra River which runs from the upper reaches below the dam into Melbourne will benefit from the fresh flow of water after a hot dry January according to Melbourne Water Waterways Manager David Norman.

Mr Norman said the flows were a way of enhancing river health and supporting the natu-

No snags for sausage butcher

By JESSE GRAHAM A YARRA Glen butcher will take on interstate contestants in a bid to win the national crown of Sausage King this weekend, following a statewide win last year.

Yarra Glen Quality Meats butcher Rod Faulkner will make his way up to the Hunter Valley in New South Wales on Friday 31 January for the National Sausage King Competition.

His entry in the national competition follows a win of the Victorian Sausage King title in August last year, where Mr Faulkner topped about 1200 other entrants to win the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prestigious prize for the second time since 2009.

He said he was feeling reasonably confident for the competition, where his sausages will be judged against the five other contestants from other states. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a one in six

I HAVE been a lap swimmer at the indoor Jack Hort Memorial Pool throughout most of the 24 years it has been open and, before, and during that time, I have observed...

A magnificent community achievement whereby Healesville High School, the then Healesville Shire, businesses that donated materials, and numerous community volunteers including teaching staff and parents, council workers, and organisations such as Rotary came together to finance and construct an invaluable recreation resource for this town.

Two examples of this dedication are one current swimmer, then a shire worker, who was loaned the council backhoe to dig the pool during his weekends, and the school principal who was seriously injured while labouring when he fell off scaffolding to the pool floor.

During this time the outdoor pool has fluctuated in its upkeep and administration standards, and is only, of course, open for about a quarter of the year, and for only half of each day at that, during which time numerous days are too cold for swimming.

Meanwhile, the indoor pool has been available, not only for Healesville residents but for people from as far away as Kinglake, Narbethong and Yellingbo, for most days of the year, as early as 6am, and into the evening.

It caters for an enormous range of swimming needs, from babies through small kids learning their first strokes, primary and secondary school, and Vicswim holiday swimming lessons and activities, competitive swimmers training for Healesville Swimming Club, adults up to their very senior years taking part in both gentle, and vigorous water exercises, people with varying disabilities and recovering from injuries or operations undergoing mobility and confidence therapy, and, just kids (of all ages!) generally enjoying themselves.

All this has been administered by a long-

term, thoroughly dedicated staff whose abilities and contributions are, I suspect, significantly under-remunerated (some in fact volunteer) and who often undertake maintenance and other procedures in order to further cut costs.

It would be an absolute iniquity if this pool were to close, here in the largest town in the Yarra Valley, especially, without any replacement in the offing.

For reasons already explained, the outdoor pool is no alternative, and nor, because it requires expensive general club membership, is the (smaller) RACV pool.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure the Yarra Junction pool caters very well for Warburton Highway residents.

I urge Yarra Ranges Council and the Education Department to once again embrace the original concept of co-operation for the sake of the community and cease the shameful practice of claiming non-responsibility for an asset that benefits so many.

Life lessons IT IS sad to read an article concerning the pool closure but not surprising.

Ross has been great to us over the years and our three boys (age 11, seven and two) have had weekly swimming lessons at the Jack Hort Memorial Pool for many years now with our eldest now training with the Lilydale Swimming Club.

Living in Narbethong, the Healesville Pool has been a very convenient, being the only indoor pool close to us.

With the pool possibly closing we will have no choice but to continue the kidsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; swimming lessons at the Kilsyth indoor 50m pool.

We only hope that other parents, hopefully, continue with their childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lessons like we will be.

Out on a limb

By JESSE GRAHAM DESTRUCTION may be a wind-gust away for a Healesville resident, who harbours fears of falling tree limbs on her home, but the council said heavy pruning could make matters worse.

Brookley Scopel contacted the Mail late last year with concerns for a group of large trees near her home, on Glenfern Road and River Street, Healesville.

Ms Scopel said that the trees surrounding her home had often dropped exceptionally large limbs, with one crushing a neighbour’s fence, another blocking access to a garage and many more littering the streets with debris.

She said that, on windy nights, she takes her children to sleep in the lounge room of her home, just in case more tree limbs fall.

Ms Scopel said that she had contacted the council to ask for the trees to be heavily pruned, in order to eliminate potentially dangerous limbs, but that the council refused.

“They need to be properly pruned and maintained,” she said.

“They’re an icon for the street - I’m not saying remove them all, but just make them safe for everybody,” she said.

Yarra Ranges Council’s Director of Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis said the trees in the area have been inspected twice recently, and found to be in good health, though some have been recommended for pruning. “(The) River Street and Glenfern Road area has been flagged for light pruning,” he said.

“A resident contacted council wanting the trees in the area to be heavily lopped - this can make the trees very dangerous, as they become more prone to decay and regrowth is weakly attached and can easily fall.”

Mr Varmalis said trees across the municipality have been affected by strong winds and heat, which can both cause trees to drop limbs.

Milestone of love

TWO Upper Yarra residents celebrated six decades of marriage and a life filled with love last week, with not even illness able to separate the lifelong pair.

Kevin and Shirley Waterman were first married on 23 January 1954, at St Andrew’s Church in Bendigo - last Thursday, they celebrated their 60th anniversary at Estia Health Residential Services in Yarra Junction.

At the celebration, they opened acknowledgements of their long marriage from Queen Elizabeth, Governor-General Quentin Bryce, Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Casey MP Tony Smith.

The couple’s daughter Kay Adorna organised an evening with family and friends to help finish off the anniversary evening.

Kevin and Shirley moved to the Yarra Valley three years ago when Shirley was put into care for her dementia, but still manage to see each

other every day.

Kevin, an 82-year-old Millgrove resident, travels to see Shirley, 79, twice every day: he spends morning and lunch at Shirley’s side, before going home and coming back to spend dinner with his wife.

Kevin and Shirley met when they were teenagers in Bendigo, and after having known each other for years got married when they were aged 21 and 19 respectively.

Kay said that, on her parents’ wedding day, the newlyweds didn’t head off in a car, but on a train to Melbourne to stay in a hotel - her father’s workmates used lipstick to mark their carriage with “JUST MARRIED”.

In their history together, the couple have had three children - Shane (deceased), Ross and Kay - four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Kay described the love between her parents as incredible and wished them a happy anniversary.

Celebrate Australia Day Good cause has Reefton rockin’

By KATH GANNAWAY THE serenity that usually surrounds the bushland setting of the Reefton Hotel was rocked on Sunday as locals and visitors celebrated Australia Day with sunshine and music.

Hotel owner Karyn Gadsby took up the challenge of hosting the annual Reefton Rocs fund-raiser, previously run by the local CFA. Karyn said she decided to run with the event and hold it on Australia Day in memory of her partner Gerard Pol who tragically passed away last May during a holiday in Botswana.

While the day was one of mixed emotions for Karyn, Gerard’s brothers Amos and Eddie, and the many friends who made their way to Reefton for the event, it was a celebrated with great music, dancing, good food and drink and lots of laughter - the way he would have liked it.

Melbourne musician Wilbur Wilde joined the local ‘Yarra River Band’ and had a bewildered crowd on their feet demanding they stand for the National Anthem.

The bewilderment changed to spontaneous applause as ‘Eagle Rock’ blasted out from the stage.The pace ramped up another notch as local youth band M F Jones took to the

LUKE Quick loved Australia Day and he would have loved the way it was celebrated in his memory at Yarra Junction on Sunday - families and community having fun.

The event, organised by friend Jason Long with tremendous support from other friends and the broader community, raised money for diabetes research and for a trust fund for Luke’s six-year-old daughter Lani’s education.

Luke died in November from complications related to diabetes.

Jason said the event was a great success with lots of families enjoying the kids activities including face-painting, drawing, the jumping castle and cricket in the afternoon, supporting the fund-raiser raffle and sausage sizzle and rocking up for the bands later in the evening.

“I’m really happy with the turnout for a first event,” he said. “The response has been great with everyone putting in to make it a success. It’s the sort of response that reflects the way people felt about Luke.”

He said he would like to see it become an annual Australia Day fund-raiser to provide a way for Upper Yarra families to celebrate the day and to raise money to help out when someone in the community loses a parent, or suffers a similar tragedy.

Then you obviously haven’t seen The Wolf of Wall Street yet.

Believe the hype. This cinematic slab of pure distilled awesomeness will knock your socks off.

To describe this movie as hugely entertaining does not do it justice.

It tells the incredible, freaky tale of Jordan Belfort, whose shady stock dealings saw him rise and fall, make and lose millions, and end up in jail.

And what a ride it was. An

innocent young stockbroker is soon suborned, debauched and totally corrupted on every conceivable level.

Belfort’s twisted take on the American dream is a travesty, and the movie tacitly endorses his behaviour. This is no cautionary tale.

It is a dazzling catalogue of excess, beautifully scripted and acted. Di Caprio has never been better, and Australian Margot Robbie makes a stunning debut.

The Wolf’s world is a male one, and this is man movie magic. The language, the humour, the sex - the ‘R’ rating is well-deserved.

The fiercest criticism you could make of this movie is that it might - and I say might - be 15 minutes too long - and bear in mind this is a three-hour film.

Scorsese, the master filmmaker, has created a masterpiece of taut storytelling, visual excesses and sparkling dialogue.

Run to your nearest cinema and gorge yourself on its perfection. You’ll thank me.

A HEALESVILLE community member with a giving attitude was recognised for his generosity with a certificate in the annual Yarra Ranges Council Australia Day Awards.

Michael Halligan received his certificate in the 26 January award ceremony at Yarra Glen Memorial Hall for his work in supporting local Rotary clubs and other organisations over the past four years.

In the aftermath of the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009, Mr Halligan assisted the Healesville Rotary Club by providing trailers for emergency centres.

In the years since, he has donated trailers to numerous raffles, fund-raisers and community groups, with a recent example his donation of a custom trailer to Chirnside Rotary, to carry wheelchairs for children in disadvantaged countries.

He said that the certificate of recognition came out of the blue, and that his aim had only been to contribute to his local community through his donations and work in recent years.

Mr Halligan runs Michael’s Trailers in Hunter Street, Healesville, with his son and son-in-law.

Amazing Lily cares for others

By KATH GANNAWAY WITH initiative, enthusiasm and compassion in bucket loads, Lily Belle Hellicar is a great ambassador for Yarra Ranges Youth.

The Millgrove teenager said she was excited and honoured to be named Yarra Ranges Council Australia Day 2013 Young Citizen of the Year.

Lily first became involved with

Koha Community Café in Yarra Junction three years ago aged just 14 years old. It was no time at all before she was a fully-fledged, hard-working volunteer.

She now shines in her role as Volunteer Co-ordinator, managing up to 30 people to fill rosters, and is an active member of the committee, initiating Koha’s monthly newsletter and pitching in with fund-raising events and hands-on jobs such as working in the

group’s three vegetable gardens.

Having left school in Year 9, Lily threw herself into gaining her Diploma in Community Services Work, the youngest student in the course which paves the way for a career in areas including disability, aged care and community development.

She has won several awards, including the Warburton Community Bank’s Ian De La Rue Youth Initiative

Award in 2013.

Life is busy for Lily, who also makes time to help her mum homeschool her younger brother, works part-time and has been a regular volunteer at Warburton Primary School and helping with respite care at Shiralee House in Yarra Junction.

She completed a radio presenter course with Yarra Valley FM and now has her own show and is setting off in

February to Cambodia where she will be helping to build houses.

Lily said volunteering had changed her life. “I love it,” she said. “(Through) volunteering at Koha, I know who I am and what I want to do with my life.

“There are so many amazing people, and it’s all about the people,” she said.

The five triggers of road fatalities

By KATH GANNAWAY LOW-LEVEL speeding was one of five fatal behaviours targeted by police on the Australia Day weekend tackling the perception that speeding ‘a bit’ is acceptable.

Speed, impairment, distraction, fatigue and seatbelt offences were identified as the fatal five when Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells launched Operation Amity last week with lowlevel speeding receiving special attention in Mr Wells’s warnings.

“Speed directly contributes to at least 30 per cent of deaths on Victoria’s roads each year and police enforcement through operations such as Operation Amity is a key factor in getting drivers to accept responsibility and reduce their speed,” Mr Wells said.

He identified low-level speeding as a significant contributor to road trauma and that there was a perception in the community that it was acceptable to drive at just over the speed limit.

“We need to change that mindset to save lives,” he said.

The message is not new.

The ‘10km less’ advertisement launched by the TAC in 1997 was the first to tackle low-level speeding and showed the extraordinary difference that driving just 10 kilometres per hour less can have on a pedestrian.

A motion-controlled camera and a description of the injuries by a trauma surgeon gave a chilling insight into what happens to a body when it’s hit by a car at speed.

The TAC’s Wipe Off 5 campaign launched more than 12 years ago challenged that perception further with statistics, information and hard-hitting advertising campaigns such as Good Driver launched in 2007 and Pictures of You launched the following year.

The confronting Pictures of You campaign brought real people into the homes of Victorian families.

It showed the consequences of speeding are far reaching and can affect many people for the rest of their lives.

The Open Road website, an online site related to road safety and transport accidents, last July cited speed as the biggest cause of crashes on Victorian roads and said slowing down by five kilometres per hour can mean the difference between a close call and death.

It highlighted said research

showed even a small change in speed can make a big difference in road trauma with a car travelling at 60km/h taking 45 metres to stop in an emergency braking situation and a car breaking from 65km/h, in the same situation, still moving at almost 32km/h after 45m travelled.

Citing research by the Road Accident Research Unit of Adelaide University it said the risk of involvement in a casualty doubled with each five kilometre per hour increase in free travelling speed above 60km/h.

A five km/h reduction in speed could lead to at least a 15 per cent decrease in crashes, it said, and Mr Wells went further saying that even a one kilometer reduction was significant.

“We know that if all drivers reduced their average speed by one km/h, it would mean a 5 per cent reduction in road trauma, or 15 lives

Acting Minister for Roads, and a former Yarra Ranges councillor, David Hodgett backed Operation Amity saying drivers should consider using speed alert technology to help keep on the right side of the speed limits.

“VicRoads research of motorists with a history of speeding found that using a GPS with speed alert technology resulted in a significant reduction in their speeding behaviour.

“The amount of time they spent speeding was reduced by 47 per cent,” he said.

“All drivers should consider installing a device like a GPS with speed alert function to remove any excuse for speeding, help them become safer drivers and reduce the road toll.”

The TAC anti speed campaigns are on its website www.tac.vic.gov.au.

It also encourages a culture of speedo watching rather than being aware and alert to the road, conditions and general surroundings. Perhaps instead of fining those that close to the limit they should adopt a warning system which is recorded against your licence (with car rego) so you can’t in future actually be oblivious to the error inbuilt into your speedo!

By CHRIS ANDERSON ON the outside, round 11 in D.J. Strachan Shield shaped as a one-sided round as the top four sides shaped up against the bottom four sides.

For those in the know, the round shaped as a season defining one as although the bottom four had slipped one and a half games behind the front runners, they have all shown glimpses of being worthy participants in finals action.

The reality of the situation is that if any of these bottom four sides can’t muster up a victory, their finals chances all but disappear.

Yarra Junction certainly put their best foot forward when they travelled to Mount Evelyn in search of closing the gap.

In a war of attrition, honours were shared after the first hour as the Junction bowlers restricted the home side with some disciplined lines and lengths.

With the Rovers somewhat standing firm, the opportunity presented itself for the batsmen to kick on, but it wasn’t to be the case as the Eagles’ bowling was proving difficult to get away and in due course the home side lost regular wickets forcing the pace.

Troy Hancock made some inroads before lunch with 36 and an enterprising partnership between Daniel (29) and Jesse Fraser (27) after lunch looked to be steering the Rovers to a decent total, but it wasn’t to be as the experience and guile of Daniel Lever (5/35) and Terry Ottrey (3/27) ensured the Eagles were well on top, dismissing the home side for a disappointing 134.

As is so often the case when a team is bowled out cheaply, the reward is to survive a tricky spell to close out the opening day of the contest. With 12 overs to face, the Eagles made a brisk start, however three wickets in two

overs saw the visitors finish at 3/29 opening the door for the Rovers. With talent still in the sheds, one would have Yarra Junction still in front of this contest, however early wickets next would surely swing the pendulum in Mount Evelyn’s favour.

Woori Yallock travelled to Coldstream keen to keep their finals hopes alive in a game that promised plenty, belying the gap on the ladder. Woori Yallock has challenged many teams this season, but has often fallen short, leaving it in a sticky predicament. Entering this game, the Tigers would’ve seen this game as an ideal opportunity to reverse the trend as Coldstream have been battling some demons of late after jumping the competition at the start of the season.

Woori Yallock opened the game with the bat and compiled a reasonable score against some good bowling. Jarrod Bayliss (3/26) made an immediate impression on the contest. As he has done on many occasions this season, Bayliss put the Tigers under early pressure with key wickets.

In recent matches, it has been the Tigers’ top order that has made the bulk of the runs, so with the early wickets there were some nervous Woori followers. A hard-fought partnership between the hard hitting Simon Young (37) and the reliable Tim Diggins (67 not out) set the visitors on the right track and despite a late order fightback from Liam Doughty (3/42), Woori Yallock was ble the scratch together a defendable total of 185.

Like Yarra Junction, the Crocs faced a tricky couple of overs to close out the day, and found themselves 1/14 at the close. Coldstream has talented, but recently flawed, batting line-p and one suspects that if they click into gear then they will cruise to the target, but if this doesn’t happen, Woori has talented and versatile attack that will make short work of the struggling Crocs.

Hoddles Creek hosted Healesville in what looks on paper to be a lopsided affair as it is top against bottom. Hoddles Creek have great pride in their club, and would be keen to see a tough season out with the taste of victory.

On the other hand, Healesville will be viewing the last month of the season as an opportunity to fine tune before an assault on a long-waited premiership.

The visitors batted first and made an immediate impact on the scoreboard. Geoff Stock and Johnny Heywood have formed a valuable alliance at the top of the order for the Bloods, and they took the challenge up to the improving Wombats’ opening bowlers.

If Healesville is to take the next step from finalist to premier then it needs to capitalise on the starts. As has happened so often this season, as good as Stock and Heywood have batted, they are yet to make a ‘big one’ as they have continually faltered when they’ve had the bowling attack on their knees.

This week was no different.

Regular contributions throughout the batting line-up, highlighted by an entertaining 23 from Chance Burridge, ensured the Bloods’ innings continued to flow, however a total of 174 on a small and quick ground would be a disappointing return from a top-of-thetable team. The experienced bowling pair of Mick Batten (3/40) and Brenton Derix (3/61) fought hard for the Wombats as they shouldered most of the work load.

On form alone, Healesville probably has enough runs on the board with their attack, however the Wombats have enough experience in their lineup that if they can weather the early onslaught they may give themselves a chance of chasing the runs down the further they get into the day.

In the final game of the round, Seville flexed its muscles at Warburton as it tried to straighten the season.

The home side batted first and struggled to make a fist of run making against the might of the Seville attack.

Brent Clinch played a solo hand contributing 35 in a paltry score of 102.

With a win crucial to their progression this season, the Burras needed to make early inroads into Seville’s batting line-up, but the hard hitting Adam Burns was having none of it. Burns’ cavalier innings of 40 batted the Burras out of the contest leading the visitors to 1/80.

A brisk start with the bat next week will see Seville push for outright victory and book a place in his season’s finals. With their bowling attack you would be a brave man to back against them.

SHERBROOKE Little Athletics Centre held its fourth annual Sherbrooke Gift at Kings Park in Upper Ferntree Gully on Saturday.

A handicap race system based on each athlete’s best performance throughout the season had competitors starting at various points along the 100m track.

After a series of early morning heats, the athlete with the fastest time from each age group (under-6 to seniors) then advanced through to the final, which is a mixed age final, using the same handicapping system.

At the end of a couple of fantastically close races, the winner of the girls’ final was under-11 girl Alannah Waterson. The winner of the boys’ final was under-7 boy Dylan Creek. Both winners were presented with the Sherbrooke Little Athletics Centre perpetual trophy, while all finalists were presented with trophies for their age group first place result.

Both Alannah and Dylan said they would be back next year to defend their titles.

Athletes also competed in a pentathlon competition during the morning with points being awarded for performances in each event ribbons being awarded to all participants.

By KATH GANNAWAY FEBRUARY is looking good for race-goers with the summer run of horse racing continuing at Healesville and Yarra Glen and the Healesville Greyhound Club hosting its annual cup heats and final.

Fun run preparations gather pace

By REBECCA BILLS WARBURTON Up and Running Fun Run event is gearing up for another successful year.

As participants are dusting off their joggers in preparation for the half marathon, 10-kilometre run, five-kilometre run or walk and twokilometre kids’ dash organisers are busy preparing for the day’s events.

Event organiser Sue Hoffman said the half marathon was proving to be the most popular event on the program, with entries already above expectations and spots filling up fast.

“The sensational scenic half marathon course will follow the Yarra for most of the course and includes a gentle off road climb up Big Pats Creek Road into the beautiful State forest,” she said.

Ms Hoffman said Oscar’s on the Yarra have come on board this year, sponsoring the half marathon and offering luxury accommodation packages for the male and female winners of the event.

“All half marathon participants will receive a finisher’s medal and all entrants in each event will receive a special Warburton Up and Running show bag,” she said.

“Charnwood Cottages and the iconic Warburton Caravan Park continue their support with generous accommodation packages for the male and female winners of the 10-kilometre and five- kilometre fun runs.

“Prize money is also up for grabs for the winners and placegetters of each event as well as medals for age group winners.”

This year, the fun run is welcoming a new initiative of electronic timing provided by Tomato Timing.

Ms Hoffman said this year participants in the five-kilometre run and walk as well as the two kilometre kids’ dash will be able to run

on the new track section after a collapsed riverside a few years ago.

It is a truly genuine family event that includes stalls, showcasing the local Yarra Valley produce including wine from Killara Winery and music from local singer Holly-Jo Nelson.

The Warburton Up and Running Fun Run sponsors both Warburton CFA and the Upper Yarra SES to support volunteers who provide vital services to the community.
