Walk talks volumes By BRIDGET COOK WHEN Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon finished up her mayoral term in October, she left behind a great legacy. One of the highlights of her mayoral term, the Mayor’s Walk for Disability in August raised much-needed awareness and money for the critical service gaps in Casey facing people living with a disability and their carers. Cr Stapledon, who is the carer for her son Pete, trekked 75 kilometres, for two weeks, visiting prominent community centres, organisations, businesses, services, educational institutions and landmarks to speak with the community and highlight these key issues. Given the mayor’s profile, the walk drummed up huge support from the local community and successfully attracted some funding commitments from the State and Federal governments for improved services in early intervention, employment, supported accommodation and respite. The council resolved in August, that the walk would become an annual event. It is for this reason that Cr Amanda Stapledon has been chosen as the 2013 Berwick Cranbourne News Person of the Year. Cr Stapledon thanked Star News Group for the honour. “As a mayor or councillor, I would never expect to receive any such recognition for the work that I have been elected to do, but I do appreciate this privilege so very much,” she said. “The Star News is a wonderful paper that covers so many community issues and none more than the Mayor’s Walk for Disability. “The response to the Walk is still being discussed by community members even now which highlights the importance of the pressing issues facing people with a disability and their carers and how things need to improve and that they need our support. “When I was elected to council, I committed to representing everyone and I have endeavored to do just that. “But when there is an issue that sees people with such a need, it deserves extra focus and effort to try to improve their lives and that is what I hope that walk has done. “There is no greater service than to service one’s community.” While the walk was one of the highlights of

PERSON OF THE YEAR her mayoral term, it was not Cr Stapledon’s only achievements as mayor. Following quite a tumultuous year for the council in 2012, Cr Stapledon took on the role as mayor at a challenging time. Following the election, there was almost a completely different council voted in, with five first-time councillors, two returning councillors and only four councillors re-elected. Cr Stapledon has been credited as one of the driving forces behind returning harmony to the council and supporting and guiding the new councillors into their roles. Current mayor and close friend and colleague Geoff Ablett said Cr Stapledon was a worthy recipient of the recognition. “I believe Cr Amanda Stapledon to be quite an extraordinary human being,” he said. “I say this as this is my sixth year working with her and she has a real concern for the welfare of all people, and works extremely hard to make a positive difference in the lives of all the people she comes into contact with. “The Mayor’s Walk for Disability was just another huge example of supporting those who need support on an ongoing basis to make a real difference to their quality of life. “Her concern for the welfare and teamwork with her fellow councillors made her a fantastic mayor who could really lead and be part of the team. “She certainly set an example of leadership that I will, and those who follow will, try to emulate. “With Amanda, what you see is what you get, and she will never change from being the outstanding human being she is. “She will always do outstanding things for the City of Casey.”
