Aid for hearing By NATALIE GALLENTI WHEN Louise and Jeremy Rogerson first saw their newborn son’s tiny ear just moments after he was born, they were immediately concerned. The Hillside couple already had one child and knew there was something wrong with little Xander. An audiologist made the immediate diagnosis of Microtia and Atresia affecting his left ear, meaning there is no ear canal or ear drum and Xander suffers from severe hearing loss. They were told that the abnormality occurred during Louise’s pregnancy and only affects one in 6000 to 12,000 people. “We had no idea what is was ... we were pretty worried and didn’t know what it would mean for the rest of his body,” Louise told Star. To make life even harder for the three-year-old, he was recently diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder that, compounded with his hearing loss and speech difficulties, often leaves him frustrated and angry. “It’s hard to see it as a parent ... he’s about six months behind where he should be. “His baby sister speaks better than he does.” Despite all of this, the family continues to try to make life as normal as possible for the pre-schooler with a “quirky” personality, including stints at day care and swimming lessons. But they realise life will become more challenging when he attends kindergarten and school. “In a classroom situation or somewhere noisy like a shopping centre, he can’t hear anything. He wears

a hearing aid and that has made a huge difference ... but it’s still hard. “We constantly have doctor appointments ... the main goal is for him to hear before school.” And that might happen after the family met with doctors from the United States who are able to create a complete new ear, ear canal and ear drum, so he will have not only an ear visually, but hearing on the left side as well. The operation can be completed in the one day, but can only be performed in the US and will require a four to six-week recovery process, leaving the family faced with a $100,000 medical bill. But there’s nothing they would not do for their precious child. “I love that little ear, I will miss it, but I want to prevent any bullying, in this day and age it shouldn’t happen, but realistically it will. “We need to know we’ve given him the best chance in life. There’s no length we wouldn’t go to for him. “He will be a totally different person ... he will thrive.” The working parents also have a long list of doctors and specialist appointments they attend with Xander each month which also puts a financial strain on them. A trivia night on Saturday 30 November at the Altona Hockey Club has been organised to help raise funds for the operation. Anyone interested in learning more about Xander’s plight or to make a donation visit www.pandasear. org.au or www.facebook. com.au/pandasear.

By NATALIE GALLENTI A BACCHUS Marsh toddler struggling with a debilitating disease has been given a new lease on life. Little Sienna Cordell, who featured on the front page of Star on 16 July, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as an infant and has spent most of her life in and out of hospital. During this time, her parents Briohny and Brad Cordell, who have another four children, have spent years hoping to gain access to a treatment that might improve the life of their beloved daughter.

Now the family has a reason to celebrate after Sienna was accepted into a program which trials the innovative TheraSuit treatment from the United States. The little battler began treatment yesterday, to the absolute joy of family and friends. The TheraSuit is a bio-mechanical suit used to increase feedback to the brain and enhance movement and is at the cutting edge of therapeutic treatment of cerebral palsy. Close family friend Jenny Kearney said the family was “delighted” upon being accepted into the program and even happier when they

found out it would be held in Melbourne. Sienna has also been accepted into a second session next year. However, the program costs $9000 and having already spent thousands of dollars, including over $20,000 on corrective eye surgery, the family is feeling the financial pressure. That is why the community has stepped in once again to lend a hand and help cover some of the cost of the treatment. Anyone who wishes to help with sponsorship can contact Jenny Kearney on 0408 104 155.

Little Sienna has cerebral palsy and is undergoing treatment that might help improve her life. 109664

BROOKSIDE P-9 College is inviting community members to take part in its upcoming Wellbeing and Mental Health Awareness forum this Thursday. The school is hoping the annual event will attract many parents, students and local residents in a bid to raise the profile of youth mental health and the importance of prevention, early detection and positive help-seeking behaviours. Teacher and student well-being officer Seral Fehmi said the day would include student performances and work reflecting what they had learnt about the importance of their own well-being and that of their peers. There will also be a performance by Australian hip hop champions BKODE on the night. Ms Fehmi said there would also be prizes drawn on the day, a speaker from Headspace Sunshine, Melton Youth Services and other local organisations. Melbourne Victory players will also be on hand with signed memorabilia. The forum will be held at Brookside P-9 College, Federation Way, Caroline Springs this Thursday, 14 November from 3.15pm to 5.30pm.

The Melbourne Airport Community Aviation Consultation Group (CACG) is an independent forum where opinions and issues regarding the airport can be expressed, particularly in relation to planning and development matters. It will also identify current and emerging trends in respect to community opinion. The Melbourne Airport Community Aviation Consultation Group invites the public to attend the next quarterly meeting. Rights upheld By ALESHA CAPONE MPs from the West, who opposed a parliamentary Bill described as a ’savage attack’ on the rights of road trauma victims, have helped stop the proposed new laws. Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins said the State Government’s proposed changes to the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) scheme would have denied compensation to families who have lost loved ones in traffic accidents. Ms Hutchins said the Bill would have meant a victim’s relative could only claim to have suffered after the accident, if they proved they were unable to work for three years afterwards. Ms Hutchins said this would have instantly prevented children, retirees, stay-at-home parents and people with a disability, which prevented them from working, from receiving assistance. The Ambulance Employees Australia, the United Firefighters Union and Police Association also opposed the TAC changes, which would have prevented these workers from claiming compensation for mental injuries developed by attending accidents. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the 1997 case of Senior Constable Lewczuk, who died after he intercepted a speeding car in Ardeer, reminded him of the importance of the proposed TAC amendments. “We will not play any part in taking away the rights of the grieving families of people who have died or who are severely injured in transport accidents,” he said. Melton MP Don Nardella also opposed the TAC changes. A State Government spokesperson said because the Opposition voted against the Bill, it did not have sufficient votes to pass into law. “The government will consider its options in due course,” he said. The Assistant Treasurer, Gordon Rich-Phillips, said the Opposition was putting the interests of plaintiff lawyers ahead of injured Victorians, as the changes would have also capped fees paid to these lawyers under the TAC scheme. “The TAC should not be a cash cow for plaintiff lawyers,” Mr Rich-Phillips said. “The Coalition Government is trying to ensure that injured TAC clients, rather than lawyers, receive the money as compensation.”

Festival fun

MELTON was buzzing last Saturday as thousands of residents, including, from left, Dylan, Bailey and Cody, enjoyed the colour and fun of the Djerriwarrh Festival. This year’s festival revolved around the theme of ‘celebrate’ and kicked off with a street parade showcasing the best that Melton has to offer. Onlookers were treated to live entertainment throughout the day from 1980s electro-pop legends Pseudo Echo and all girl psych-rock band Stonefield. There were also performances from Bob the Builder, Bonjah, Damian Howard, Danny Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT Rio and Vegas Baby. 109828

Theft from cars concern By NATALIE GALLENTI THEFTS from motor vehicles continue to be a prevalent problem across the City of Melton according to Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Jenks. Det Sen Sgt Jenks said police are targeting car thieves however public assistance is still required to identify offenders and to ensure vehicles are less attractive to criminals by not

leaving valuable items exposed. He said during one overnight period between 28 and 29 October there were a spate of offences on vehicles with the majority containing items which were view of the offenders. A vehicle parked in the driveway of a home in Sirus Way, Melton, was left unlocked and jewellery and

credit cards were stolen, while a mobile phone was stolen from a vehicle parked in a driveway in Royal Terrace. Two vehicles were broken into in Kingston Rule St, Kurunjang, and both had small items stolen, while car stereo systems and a phone charger and stereo were stolen from a vehicle in Black Knight Way. On 2 November tools were sto-

len from a utility parked at Melton Waves. Meanwhile, on 4 November at 3.20am, a group of four young males, two riding scooters and two dinking on a bicycle, were disturbed trying to break into a vehicle on Glenbruar Drive, Hillside. They fled the scene empty handed when a sensor light was activated.

Six Weeks to Christmas Don’t miss your opportunity to advertise your product or service in 3 WEEKS TO CHRISTMAS

Call 9933 4800

Choosing which tree to decorate this Christmas need not be a difficult decision.

Tree joy and glee

1101838-KC46-13

ONE of the most important festive decisions families make is choosing what sort of Christmas tree to have. While plastic trees are trouble-free, reliable options, with many variations in quality and price these days, many prefer the look, feel and smell of a real tree. The choosing of the ‘perfect’ tree is an exciting event which could become a family tradition, for children and adults alike. Most will head down to their local Christmas tree farm within the first weekend of December, or the week before 1 December. Driving to the farm is an exciting time, play some carols in the car to get everyone in the mood. Once the trees are spotted

from the road, wind down the windows and take in a deep breath of that beautiful scent. Everyone can get involved in walking around the farm and choosing the best possible tree for your home. Just ensure you have worked out the height of your ceiling at home, taking into consideration the size of your star or angel on top, and the stand for the tree. Don’t forget once it is home to keep the cut base in a bucket, and top up the water as often as necessary. There are also many benefits from choosing an artificial tree. The convenience of having an artificial tree from year to year is very comforting. Unlike a real tree, there is no hassle bolting the trunk to the base or hassling with sticky

pine needles and constant use of the vacuum cleaner. Your artificial tree also does not require any watering or special care and maintenance. It is also much easier to decorate an artificial Christmas tree than a real one. Instead of spending your money on a real tree from year to year, buying an artificial tree is an investment that will last for years. With an artificial Christmas tree, you don’t have to worry about allergies that are so prevalent today. There are plenty of green trees to choose from, with varying quality ranging from the shiny plastic look to the reallook branches that have different shades of green to mimic a live tree.
