Beloved God, who was known to our mothers and fathers, and even to our spiritual forebears, have mercy on us.

We do not always love as you would have us love.

We do not always do as you would have us do.

In our stubbornness, we turn from you when we should turn toward you.

Hold us, dear One – comfort us when we mourn the passing of friends and family, and help us to know that they are rejoicing in your presence.

We praise you for the grace you shower on us, constantly forgiving our errors, Hear now the silent fears and worries of our hearts.

A time of silence Friends, hear the good news! Though thousands upon thousands of our ancestors did not follow God’s ways perfectly, we have hope in one who did! Jesus, a man of a particular people in a particular time, taught through his words and deeds that God has already forgiven us. During this moment of silent reflection, consider the change God wishes to make in you.

Remembering the Saints Richard Dean Compton January 14, 1953 – March 30, 2023 Richard Dean (Ricky) Compton, also known as Carburetor, was a respected citizen and successful self-made businessman. He started out in the convenience store business managing Hop-In, then became the Vice President of Operations for Speedway Centers. Richard and his wife took on a new venture and became owners of the Village Market in Bassett, VA. He was dedicated to serving their customers within the community and he found happiness in spending time with his family at home. Richard was a loving husband, father, papa, brother, uncle, and friend to those who knew him. May the road rise to meet you, PaPa, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Mildred Leedy Huddle March 12, 1920 – November 16, 2022 Midge Huddle along with her husband Ed joined Starling Avenue Baptist Church in the summer of 1957. They had moved to Martinsville after becoming the owners of the Western Auto store. As an active member of the church, Midge served on various committees, as a Sunday school teacher, and the leader of the Senior Adult Fellowship. God blessed her with a long life in which her faith and her family were her priorities. Having a caring heart, she was always ready to help others. She was blessed with many friends and was always able find the good in everyone. Her family misses her greatly and appreciates the love and care she gave us.

Christy Blanche Mattox February 22, 1978 – May 31, 2023 Christy was a graduate of Martinsville High School, class of 1977, and was a member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church.

She attended church as a child with her grandmother Lorene Mattox, and her cousin, Samantha. Christy also sang in the Youth Choir and loved helping in the nursery. She was a very loving daughter. She is survived by her mother, Loretta Robertson; two sons she loved very much, Nathan Pruitt and Tyler Hood. She is also survived by many very special friends. She was loved and we miss her very much.

Jack Grady Monday January 16, 1936 – November 24, 2022 Grady was the son of Bert and Lois Monday. Growing up in Clover, South Carolina, he later attended Erskine College and Wake Forest University Law School. While there he met the love of his life, Frances Helms Monday. They practiced law together for four decades in Martinsville, Virginia. He enjoyed living a wonderful life and never met a stranger. He loved to entertain with his many funny stories. He loved to cook, eat shrimp, listen to beach music, and was an accomplished shagger. Grady had many friends at various courthouses and had a great respect for law enforcement and first responders. He was predeceased in death by his parents, his loving wife, a sister, and four brothers.

Surviving are his son, Eric, and his wife, Monica, and his adored grandson, Helms.

Garry Clinton Nelson December 22, 1951 – December 18, 2022 Garry was a graduate of Drewry Mason High School, class of 1970. He was employed by E.I. DuPont for over 24 years.

Garry had a love for candy, old country westerns, and setting up modern-day household gadgets. His greatest hobby included a large model train set in which he took great pride.

But his interest in those things couldn’t be compared to the love he had for his wife, Violet, who passed nearly two short months before him. They would have celebrated 47 years of marriage last December 20th, but his family feels their reunion in heaven was the best anniversary gift he would have wanted.

Jeanette H. Newman November 26, 1922 – June 30, 2023 Jeanette accepted Jesus as her Savior at Fontaine Baptist Church in Ridgeway and transferred her membership to Starling Avenue Baptist Church when she moved to Martinsville in the forties. She was determined that her children would grow up in a God-centered church and together they attended all services and revivals. Her guiding principle was to be the best mother, friend, and Christian she could be. She remained a faithful member all her life and served the church when needed.

Lowell Thomas Roberts January 5, 1934 – February 11, 2023 Lowell Roberts was born in Ridgeway, Virginia, to the late Sanford Roberts and Ethel Roberts. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Mae Williams Roberts; son, Timothy Lee Roberts; sisters, Mary Frances and Henrietta; and brothers, Sanford, Price, Ronnie, and Jesse Roberts. He was a member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church and loved his work in the ministry as a deacon. He was owner/operator of Sanwell Printing Company and a member of the Martinsville J.C. Rotary Club and Lions Club.

Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family.

Samantha Ann Stone January 7, 1983 – November 28, 2022 Samantha was a graduate of Martinsville High School, class of 2001, a graduate of National Business College as a pharmacy technician, and a member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church. She loved coming to church with her loving granny, Lorene Mattox, and her cousin, Christy. She enjoyed singing in the Children’s Choir and had a beautiful smile that lit up the room like sunshine. Samantha’s friends said she was always a good listener. She was a loving mother and is survived by her three children, Aubrey Stone, Bryson Stone, and Trey Odell, as well as her mother, Norma Stone, and a sister, Kelly Stone. Her family says she was so loved and will be greatly missed.

Benjamine Randolph Weaver May 13, 1941 – August 6, 2023 Randy served in the U.S. Army and was owner/operator of a trucking company, Randy Weaver Trucking. He was a member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Eva, and two sons, Brian and Travis. He is also survived by children, Dr. Jennifer Jenkins, Allen and Chris Bell, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a sister, Linda Nolen. He will be missed by his friends and family.

Thank you for generously donating men’s clothing to the Recovery Center. The center desperately needs men’s pants (not jeans) sizes 32-40/length 30-34. They can be gently used and in good condition. Please check your closets . This will continue as an ongoing project through December. Bins will be set up at both entrances.

Members or others who are willing to provide transportation to individuals having medical appointments in nearby cities, please provide your name and contact information to Barbara in the church office.

You are invited to place a poinsettia in the sanctuary for Christmas. They may be placed in honor of or in memory of someone. Orders need to be in the church office by Friday, November 17. The cost is $25.00 each (wrapped & delivered to the church). Poinsettia order envelopes are located at both entrances to the church.
