Remembering the Saints Phillip Thomas Collins June 1, 1944 – July 3, 2022 Phillip grew up in the Southside area and attended Starling Avenue Baptist Church his entire life. His parents, Clarence and Margaret Collins, took him every Sunday. He served two years in the U.S. Army and retired from DuPont with 38 years of service.

He was a past member of Mt. Olivet Ruritan Club. He loved history, fishing, and reloading ammunition cartridges at home.

He loved going to church as long as his health allowed him to after his first stroke. He was a fighter and never gave up. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Donna, son Brian, daughter Ann Marie, and granddaughters, Emerson and Delaney.

Joyce Marie Craddock August 16, 1939 – January 20, 2022 Joyce was one of our beloved members of the deaf ministry. She and her husband Jack joined the church in 1973 and were members of the Talking Hands Sunday School class. Joyce loved her church family and especially Joan Joyce, interpreter for the deaf. She looked forward to church fellowship opportunities and was a regular attendee of the monthly community meal. Joyce attended the Virginia School for the Deaf in Staunton, VA, and was a true southern lady. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, cooking, and she loved her pets. When Joyce and her family lost everything they owned in a fire, she never complained or blamed God. All she asked for were eye glasses and a Bible. She loved her family and the Lord. Even though she couldn’t hear, she loved for you to pray with her and hold her hand as she felt the prayer. She was a true friend and has been missed by all who knew her.

Esther Ann Grogan Eller September 24, 1938 – December 11, 2021 Esther grew up on Spring Street, attending Starling Avenue Baptist Church with her parents and two brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years Jay and a brother, John Roy. Esther is survived by a son Trip a daughter Liz and a brother George. She worked for the Highway Department and then at DuPont for over 30 years. She was the caregiver for her mother and her aunt, and they enjoyed working puzzles and playing Scrabble. Esther also enjoyed playing bridge weekly with her bridge club. Her four grandchildren were the highlight of her life in her later years. She was blessed with a life filled with a loving family, wonderful neighbors in Gaynor Heights and lifelong friends.

Roy Gilbert Harrell, Jr. May 19, 1931 – August 15, 1922 Roy passed away on August 15, 2022, in Richmond VA. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Ann. He was a devoted son, husband, father and friend. He graduated from Fieldale High School in 1951 and proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 19511955. He loved Starling Avenue Baptist Church and its members.

Roy served as Deacon for many years and loved serving on various committees, especially taking care of the church building and grounds. He also loved playing on the church softball team as pitcher. He is survived by his daughter Pam. He is missed every day.

Brenna Bowers Harris March 8, 1948 – February 22, 2022 Brenna was born to the late Johnny Randolph Bowers and Helen Williams Bowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jerald Lance Harris and brother Larry Bowers. In earlier years she enjoyed traveling with friends. She had a love of reading, enjoyed beach trips with family and the youth of our church. Having a strong love of family, she especially adored her grandsons, Lance and James. She is survived by two daughters Sharon and Lorri and five brothers.

Judy Gayle Hubbard December 2, 1944 – September 28, 2022 Judy was a wonderful loving wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, aunt and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband Buck. Surviving are two daughters Kelley and Tracy and two sons Jeff Williams and Jeff Jones. Judy worked as a private duty CNA in homes and at the former Kennedy House. She dedicated her life to loving and helping others. She loved her family and was their rock. Judy had a strong faith, loving the Lord wholeheartedly. She was a person people looked up to. She especially enjoyed listening to the rock band Queen, and spending time at the beach. It was her favorite place. Her children say they were blessed to have her as their mother.

George Lee Hundley, Sr. September 28, 1924 – November 23, 2021 George was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy and their son Russell. He is survived by two sons George, Jr. and Clyde and one daughter Janet. George was a celebrated WWII Army veteran, serving as a tank driver. He spent over 40 years at DuPont as a machinist and after retirement, 20 years volunteering with Bassett Rescue Squad. He also served as a deacon at Starling Avenue Baptist Church for numerous years. George never met a stranger and drove a hard bargain. He had the best stories and was always teaching someone about rabbit hunting, raising beagles or making deals. He could build ANYTHING with his hands and designed contraptions no one would think of building, but he always found a use for them. He is remembered for his faith in God, his love for his family and his determination to prevail in any given circumstance.

Hope Hensley Kirk March 14, 1936 – September 27, 2021 Hope and Fred came to Starling Avenue Baptist Church from Villa Heights Baptist Church where they had been very active in church life. They knew what they wanted for their children, so Sunday School, Bible Study and Vacation Bible School were very important to them. They felt a warm welcome from SABC, and they were ready to enjoy and serve in their new church home. Of the many activities, she most enjoyed the annual clean-up day by church members. That was when she could get rid of the cobwebs in the beautiful stained-glass windows, and she could polish the pews to a high shine. Hope was passionate about American history, politics, and taking care of those she felt entrusted to her by God. Ill health forced her to become homebound, but she never forgot the many things she got from being a part of SABC.

Bobby Gene McFadin April 21, 1932 – January 10, 2022 Bobby was born in Kentucky to the late Robert Smith McFadin and Dossie Gann McFadin. His family moved to Martinsville in 1941 when his father was transferred from Seaford, DE, to the new DuPont plant here in Martinsville. Bobby was also employed by DuPont for 35 years and retired in 1991 as Maintenance Supervisor. He was a long-time member of Starling Avenue Baptist Church. Bobby enjoyed woodworking, his travels to the beaches of South Carolina with family and friends, and especially bicycling on the trails of Hilton Head Island. Bobby is survived by his wife Cheryl and his three daughters Ann, Laura, and Tonya, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Bobby is greatly missed by his family.

Violet Kanode Nelson December 11, 1952 – October 10, 2022 Violet graduated from Drewry Mason High School in 1971 and earned her education degree from Radford College and master’s degree from the University of Virginia. She married Garry Nelson who fell in love with her at first sight after seeing her as a contestant in a beauty pageant. They celebrated 46 years of marriage. For 45 years, she taught many of Martinsville and Henry County’s public school students through a variety of teaching positions with children of all ages. Her numerous students were part of her classroom at Leatherwood School, her Gifted and Talented classrooms which spanned the middle and high schools across the county, and elementary classes at Albert Harris Elementary. Violet always enjoyed watching Perry Mason with her husband, shopping trips with her daughter Candice and creating stained glass projects with friends. She is also survived by two brothers and one sister.

Patricia Fern Stanley January 14, 1944 – January 16, 2022 Patricia Fern “Pat” Stanley grew up on Southside with her mother, two sisters, and two brothers. After graduation from Martinsville High School, she went to work at DuPont and remained there until retirement. Living in Southside gave her the ability to walk to church at Starling Avenue Baptist. As a very young girl she loved church, especially the youth choir. The love for church and church family continued throughout her life.

Having family that were charter members at Starling Avenue, she wanted their legacy to continue. It gave her great joy to work on the history of the church through scrapbooking. She documented and researched a great portion of the book written by David Adkins on the church history. She and her mother were instrumental in starting the bereavement meal ministry. Pat loved her family and her church, but first and foremost, she loved the Lord.

James “Jimmie” Sterling Winn August 30, 1932 – November 16, 2021 Jimmie began his Christian journey here at Starling Avenue Baptist Church actively attending programs for the young in Boy Scouts, choir, and youth activities. After high school and some college, he began a long career of working 42 years at Tultex in Martinsville. During this time in his life, he was married to Geneva and began a family with three children, Sterling, Danny, and Mark. Jimmie supported his family, church, friends, and school activities and served on various church committees. Participating on Building and Grounds Committee, especially the kitchen renovation with church friends, gave him great pleasure. During retirement, time spent with grandchildren was a highlight of his life. Jimmie always strived to do what was right in the sight of God.

William Daniel “Danny” Winn November 25, 2061 – July 1, 2022 Danny was the son of Jimmie and Geneva Winn. He grew up at Starling Avenue Baptist Church with his two brothers Sterling and Mark. Even though he moved his membership to First Baptist Church after he married, he continued to give his love and support to SABC.

A Special Business Meeting is being called on November 13, 2022, following the morning worship service for the purpose of calling a pastor. The Pastor Search Committee has made their recommendation to the Personnel Committee. The individual being considered for pastor will deliver the sermon on November 13, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. A vote will be taken by secret ballot at the special business meeting directly following the worship service on November 13. This service will not be shown on Sunday, but will be recorded and added to our Facebook page and YouTube on the following Monday, depending on the outcome of the vote. Those listening virtually can vote by calling or texting. Prior to November 13, an audio service will be presented on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. and one at 7:00 p.m. These two audios can be heard on Webex.
