We also include information on newly launched series publications.
Most of the titles listed in our bibliography feature our specially discounted Starkmann Prices. These are particularly advantageous exclusive special offers. Artist Biography
Hyeejin Bae is a visual artist from South Korea whose work investigates how global digital communication networks are reshaping social behaviour and human relationships. Her practice centres on themes such as self-identification, consumption, classification, and intimacy, with a particular focus on the psychological structures that sustain digital othering and the commodification of interpersonal connection.
Bae earned her MFA in Sculpture from the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London (2024), and her MA in Art Education from Korea University (2017). She produced significant works including Faces (2023, isomalt installation), Cotton Candies (live performance, 2024), Belly Button Plates (2024), and Jams (2024), continuing her investigation into corporeal classification and digital consumption rituals.
In 2024, she was an artist-in-residence at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, where she developed and exhibited My Chocolate Collection – a series of chocolate torsos cast from dating partners she was matched with via dating apps during her residency. Beneath its seductive surface, the work critically reflects on how intimacy, desire, and connection are aestheticised, mediated, and consumed in the digital age.
Bae’s art practice frequently employs candies, sweets, and edible materials – such as isomalt, sugar, chocolate, and jam – as metaphors for the seductive but fleeting nature of online interaction.
These substances serve as ‘eye candies’: visually tempting, yet fragile and impermanent, mirroring how bodies and desires are packaged, consumed, and discarded in digital environments. By using materials that melt, rot, or dissolve, Bae foreground’s themes of ephemerality, sensory overload, and the dissolution of meaning in a hyper-mediated world.
Just as sweets are crafted for instant gratification and quick dissolution, Bae’s materials mirror the ephemerality of digital intimacy: relationships that melt away, identities that are performed and discarded, desire that is algorithmically shaped and commodified.
Her artwork does not merely represent these dynamics – it enacts them physically, inviting the viewer into a sensory encounter that ultimately denies lasting fulfilment. This aesthetic bait-and-switch becomes a critique of the digital condition: where intimacy becomes interface, and the self becomes spectacle.
By turning bodies into candies and longing into sugar, Bae frames digital culture as a kind of consumptive theatre, where we devour one another visually, emotionally, and symbolically. Her edible forms, melting and unstable, become objects of longing that frustrate possession – reminding us that in the digital economy of attention and desire, satisfaction is always deferred.
Bae’s recent solo exhibitions, include:
– 2024-2025 My Chocolate Collection, Daegu Art Factory, Daegu (Korea)
– 2024 My Chocolate Collection, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (Germany)
– 2023 Sugar-coated Man, Daegu Art Center, Daegu (Korea)
– 2022 Fluid Space, Dalcheon Art Creation Space, Daegu (Korea)

Artist Statement
This project explores the levity found in modern human relationships. Sweets serve as a metaphor for contemporary desires: a pursuit of pleasure without depth. These glossy, overstimulating confections reflect a preference for instant gratification and surface-level connections.
The sugary, perishable substances in my work evoke the initial pleasure and appeal of online exchanges - connections offered through sleek interfaces and carefully curated profiles. Yet beneath this surface lies a system not built for genuine reciprocity, but for endless circulation, comparison, and categorisation.
In this way, I aim to create a material allegory of digital consumption, where the sweetness of interaction conceals a hollow or extractive core.
Building on these ideas, Cotton Candies emerged as a live performance that embodied the tensions between surface allure and emotional emptiness. By using the property of the medium and staged gestures, I sought to give physical form to the fleeting, consumable nature of digital interactions and modern intimacy.
This performance also explores how modern people communicate in the digital age. I used a cotton candy mask as a metaphor for the way individuals present themselves online - through curated, artificial images shared via smartphones and platforms like Instagram. These images act as copies of the self, replacing physical presence and becoming our primary means of interaction.
The cotton candy symbolises the lightness, sweetness, and artificiality of these digital selves. The pixel-like texture and exaggerated colours reflect how people project only the polished, positive aspects of their lives - reducing emotional complexity and encouraging superficial connections, often through simple gestures like the ‘like’ button. This mask, worn more frequently than our real faces, becomes a new skin - one we start to believe is our true identity.
However, beneath this pleasant façade lies a tension. We feel an underlying anxiety - a vague but persistent desire to see beyond the sugary surface, to uncover the real identity of the other. In my work, this is expressed through the act of biting into another’s cotton candy, disrupting the mask and revealing its fragility. The torn and scattered pieces expose a reality stripped of depth, leaving only the remnants of a manufactured appearance.
This performance questions what is lost when communication is reduced to image, positivity, and ease. It challenges us to consider the cost of emotional detachment and the deeper human need to be truly seen.

However, many of the issues which were central to social policy when these books were first published remain relevant for much of the world today: an ageing population, housing shortages, changes in employment. Originally published between 1965 and 1990 the 14 volumes in this set concentrate on the major developments in social policy in the second half of the 20th century. They consider these in relation to the economic and social environment, examining social policy in relation to industry, urban planning, and housing need.

The legal rights and protections of members of the LGBTI community have been subject to debate in courtrooms and in academic law discourse internationally for decades - increasingly so since the 1990s. A great deal of the legal literature consists of guides or journal articles on specific domestic legal systems and their rulings, with a particular focus on the United States and Europe. The Oxford Handbook of LGBTI Law, in contrast, presents an unprecedented international view of the law as it pertains to sexual orientation and gender identity.

Currently, there is limited literature on the subject, with only a few review articles and introductory chapters in textbooks or books discussing the clinical features of male infertility, but failing to address its historical, societal, cultural, political, philosophical implications. This book aims to fill this gap and offers readers a historical perspective of male infertility becoming a clinical entity.
