Meet Mary Ellen Icaza

Stark Library's New CEO/Executive Director

Stark Library’s new CEO and Executive Director, Mary Ellen Icaza, was appointed in June by the Board of Directors after a months-long national search. Mary Ellen is excited about this opportunity and is looking forward to living and working in Stark County.

“Community is so important to me,” Mary Ellen Icaza, CEO and Executive Director of Stark Library said, when asked why she chose Stark County as her new home. “My family and I wanted a place where we could live, work, and become actively engaged in our community.”

When Mary Ellen and her family visited Stark County for the first time, they loved the hometown feel of the community. “Montgomery County, MD, where we lived, is part of the busy DC metro area. As we drove around the Stark area, we were struck by how friendly and warm it is here.”

On their first visit, Mary Ellen and Victoria explored the area’s neighborhoods, parks, and community offerings, while Javier and Christian spent 2

some time at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “I am so delighted with all that Stark has to offer,” Mary Ellen reports.

“We're enjoying exploring the area and discovering more about it.”

The whole family was on board with the move. “We are all very excited about the opportunities and adventures ahead,” Mary Ellen said with a smile. “We visited the school that the children will be attending, and toured many neighborhoods before deciding on a home in Plain Township.”

Mary Ellen brings more than 15 years of library experience to Stark County.

When asked why she chose our Library, her answer was clear. “I am so impressed by Stark Library and our mission to empower individuals in our community to improve their lives through lifelong learning, starting with even the youngest members of the community,” Icaza states. “I am passionate about early literacy, so the programs surrounding the Start Smart philosophy, really resonate with me. The collaboration between the Library, schools, and other community organizations is so powerful.”

With changing times, expectations, and technologies, we’re all expected to know more, do more, and be more—it can be difficult to keep up. This skill-gap can start as early as kindergarten, putting nearly half of children behind before they even start!

Instead of simply knowing how to color and identify shapes, kids are now expected to know how to read and even do basic math. That’s why one of the Library’s main priorities is to help our community Start Smart with a strong foundation of early literacy skills. One way we do that is with SPARK (Supporting Partnerships to Assure Ready Kids), a kindergarten readiness program.

SPARK’s goal is to empower parents to be their child’s first and best teacher and to foster a lifelong love of learning.

Each SPARK family is guided through the process by a Parent Partner, who conducts in-home visits to work with parents and share activities that build a firm foundation.

SPARK Parent Partners aren’t just coaches, they form close bonds with the families they work with. They are trained to identify signs of barriers to school readiness and connect families with the resources that really make a difference in their lives.

Children who have quality experiences with early learning are more likely to stay in school, go to college and have successful careers. The results speak for themselves: SPARK children score higher on state testing than their peers—even years later, and it’s all thanks to the village.

SPARK is a collaboration with the Early Childhood Resource Center which connects the schools, families, and communities in nine Ohio counties and nearly 22 districts, to ensure a child’s success in school. This school year, SPARK will work with over 1000 early learners in Stark County—that’s a lot of future leaders!

Danielle is one of our seven SPARK Parent Partners. She visits with more than 38 families each month, helping them Start Smart with a strong foundation of literacy skills.

One family that Danielle worked with this year was Christine and her two children, Ella and Eliyah.

Christine first discovered SPARK more than 15 years ago when her oldest child was in the program.

She was so impressed with SPARK that she continued the tradition with her other children.

Ella is five and excited to enter Kindergarten in the fall. Her mother, Christine, has worked hard to ensure she has the best start she can by participating in the SPARK program.

Each month Danielle visits with Ella and her younger brother, Eliyah, to explore a storybook (which they get to keep) and learn a series of fun activities to practice with their mom. These activities can range from letter knowledge to using scissors correctly—all important skills for future Kindergarteners!

Ella, once reserved, has come out of her shell as she masters complex skills. Watching her confidence grow is exciting for Danielle.

“She works so hard and diligently. Watching her eyes lig ht up when she g rasps a concept is so rewarding. I love working with families and teaching them skills that lay the foundation for success in school.”

Danielle Ella graduated from SPARK this year and loves showing what she’s learned, like mixing colors.

When asked what her favorite part of SPARK is, Ella proclaims,

“Miss Danielle is fun and does fun stuff.”

At first, Ella was hesitant about heading off to school, but Danielle calmed her fears by answering her questions and talking about what school would be like. Now Ella can’t wait for her first day! Thanks to SPARK she’s ready to enter Kindergarten with confidence!

Eliyah, 4, still has awhile before he's off to Kindergarten, but he can already write and identify the letters in his name, and does well with counting.

He loves working with Miss Danielle,

“She always brings me a book and if I do my lesson good she gives me something cool!”

There’s no doubt he’ll be prepared when it’s his turn to start school!

Christine believes that SPARK is the best thing she could have done for her kids' future.

Many people remember the bookmobile fondly, but may see it as a thing of the past—not in Stark County! The first bookmobile from Stark Library—then Canton Public Library—hit the road in 1933. By 1965 the fleet had expanded to four bookmobiles, and represented more than 40% of the Library’s circulation.

Today, the Library’s mobile services fleet is the largest in the state and touches every corner of Stark County, providing library services to each school district, preschool, and senior center in our service area. In addition, the Community Bus visits MRDD Workshops, the Stark Regional Community Correction Center, and reaches into neighborhoods and rural areas that may not have access to a local branch. We even make monthly deliveries to 120 homebound patrons.

Terri has been with the library since 1991, and has worked on the Kidmobile since it first went on the road. When school starts in the fall, she looks forward to seeing the way the children’s eyes light up each time they enter the door. The first thing the kids do when they get on the bus is have a program— complete with props, songs, finger plays, and maybe even dancing.

“Many of the children I work with may have never been in a library building,” she said. “I love to introduce them to books and the concept of a place to get books and have fun.”

Tony has been driving the kidmobile for many years. He loves the kids and has dozens of stories. “There was one girl at Walker—she was a nice little girl,” he said. “She was a foster kid, so she went from home to home to home. It seemed she always left her card behind, and she’d never have it with her.

“One day she came up to me and the first thing that came out of her mouth was, ‘You know, I’m going to get a mom and dad today! I’m going to be adopted!’ I was really happy for her.” Tony said, with tears welling in his eyes.

Many people see the neighborhood bookmobile stops as their community hub. It’s like having a little closeknit family every week. Linda says that cookbooks are always a popular item. Tina, a regular visitor, is always looking for crockpot recipes. She wants to try new recipes and is bringing samples for the bookmobile staff to taste test. “She’s amazing,” Linda says. “I think she should publish her own cookbook!”

An older patron by the name of Patricia was a night stop patron of Linda’s for 12 years. The night stop folded, but that didn’t stop Patricia. Now she comes to one of the neighborhood stops, following Linda wherever she goes.

“It feels like family. That’s why I like this job.”

The Library is such a vital part of our community.

When you think about it, the Library is like the community’s living room. A place where people and families go to learn, study, meet, and collaborate. Our neighborhood branches provide residents with safe and easy access to the Library’s services, materials, and technology in the communities where they live, work, and raise their families.

You may not know that more than half of Stark Library’s funding comes from our local property tax levy, which expires at the end of 2019. This fall, a new levy will be on the ballot which would extend the existing levy for eight years and increase it by about $29 a year for a home valued at $100,000. For about 55 cents a week, it's a great investment in our community!

The additional funding will allow the Library to sustain and enhance our current offerings, including books, databases, music, movies, eBooks and eMaterials, streaming content, and other new items, such as our popular Library of Things. In addition, levy funding will enable us to invest in our buildings for muchneeded repairs and to update our facilities to create more dynamic, flexible spaces for meetings and events. Updated technology will allow us to increase free access to computers, internet, and other innovative technologies, providing communities with critical information access and bridging the digital divide.

Our Library supports our community in so many important ways. For example, our SPARK Parent Partner program impacts thousands of children in Stark County, helping to make sure they’re ready for school. Our bookmobile and mobile services team goes into the community and meets people where they are—providing library services to daycares, senior centers, schools, and homebound patrons—residents who may have no way to get to the library. Our expert trainers work with those in need of job assistance, enabling people to improve their job skills and career path.

In every corner of Stark County, the Library touches lives.

Stark Library Provides Vital Community Services

Stark Library serves more than 240,000 residents of Stark County with nine neighborhood branch libraries and the Main Library downtown.

Our Mobile Services vehicles bring the Library to 220,000 visitors who otherwise might not have access to library services.

Last year Stark Library served nearly two million visitors, circulating almost four million items, including books, music, DVDs, ebooks, devices, and much more.

FREE access: Last year, more than 220,000 computer sessions were provided free of charge.

Learning Opportunities: Last year, more than 165,000 people attended more than 9,000 free programs.

Expert assistance: Last year, library experts provided one-on-one instruction to more than 15,000 people.

Library Funding Sources More than half of the Library’s finding comes from our local property tax levy, which expires at the end of 2019.

The remaining funds come from the State of Ohio’s Public Library Fund (PLF).

• Over the last decade, PLF Funding is down 17%.

• This decrease in funding (after inflation) represents more than $2.8 Million a year.

• Library revenue from the levy has not increased since 2012.

Passing the levy will ensure that Stark Library can continue to provide vital library services to the community.

Levy Questions & Answers Q: What will be on the ballot in November?

A: A request will be on the ballot asking voters to approve a 2.2 Mill, eight-year levy for Stark Library.

Q: Does the Library already have a tax levy?

A: Yes, a current 1.7 Mill levy that expires at the end of 2019. The current levy will be discontinued once a new one is passed.

Q: Why is the Library seeking an increased levy?

A: The increased levy will provide financial stability for the library in the face of decreasing state funding.

Q: How much will this levy cost home owners in Stark County?

A: An owner of a $100,000 home will pay an additional $29 per year.

Q: What happens if the levy doesn’t pass?

A: Without the levy, Stark Library would lose more than half of its operating budget, and would have to make major cuts in services, technologies, and collections if another levy isn't passed before 2020.

uth Reichl, this year’s One Book, One Community author, is one of the most recognizable voices in the culinary world. She’s an American chef, food writer, co-producer of PBS's Gourmet's Diary of a Foodie, culinary editor for the Modern Library, host of PBS's Gourmet's Adventures With Ruth, and was the last editor-in-chief of Gourmet magazine.

Ruth’s passion for food is nothing new—she began her food writing career in 1972 when she published her first cookbook Mmmmm: A Feastiary. At the time, she was a chef and co-owner at the Swallow Restaurant, and on the frontier of the culinary revolution which changed how people viewed and enjoyed food.

Since then, she’s delighted readers with bestsellers like Tender at the Bone: Growing up at the Table, Comfort Me with Apples, and, her first novel, Delicious! Her cookbook,

My Kitchen Year: 136 Recipes that Saved My Life, was named the best cookbook of the year and one of the best books of the year by Amazon. The Seattle Times called her “one of the most influential figures in the food world.”

She has been honored with six James Beard Awards, the highest honor for food industry professionals, and with numerous awards from the Association of American Food Journalists. In 2007, she was named Adweek’s Editor of the Year.

She received the Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism in 2007 and the 2008 Matrix Award for Magazines and is also the recipient of the Elizabeth Cutter Morrow Award.

Empowering TomTod Ideas is one of several organizations that call Stark Library their home. These partnerships build cooperation, present development opportunities, and bring the community together.

Joel Daniel Harris, who had invested his life and energy in middle school students, was approached by a student, Leah, with an idea. Not just a good idea but a great idea. Leah wondered: “What if we could have a bunch of people sleep outside in cardboard boxes for a night? Along the way we could learn about homelessness and poverty, raise awareness about the issue, and raise funds for a local homeless shelter?”

In Joel’s mind, this idea sparked a bigger question: “What if middle school kids could be empowered to use their ideas and imagination to make the world a better place?” That’s how TomTod Ideas was born. TomTod Ideas stands for Tomorrow’s Ideas Today.

“Middle school students are amazing people,” Joel says. “They have a brilliant naiveté about the world that enables them to see the possibilities instead of the roadblocks.”

TomTod Ideas empowers middleschoolers to turn those possibilities into imaginative ideas that enhance the common good of the community.

One of the many ideas brought to life through TomTod’s partnership with the Library was BikeSmart. A few years ago, while attending Camp What If, Gabby, Devin, and Alexis had an outrageous idea. After observing that there were people in Canton who had difficulty accessing basic transportation – even for work – they knew something needed to be done.

They thought: What If Stark County had a bike lending program that would give anyone who needed it access to better transportation, exercise, and recreation?

And, what if it could all be free?

Gabby, Devin, and Alexis along with TomTod Ideas staff met with representatives from Stark Library, Canton Parks and Recreation, and Stark Parks to bring their dream to life. After much discussion, planning, and strategizing, BikeSmart was born.

BikeSmart now has eight hubs in the Stark County area, has added Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) as a partner, and provides free bike rentals to Stark Library card holders. Last year, BikeSmart users made more than 8,500 trips for a total distance of almost 76,000 miles!

Thanks to Stark Library, Gabby, Devin, and Alexis, Stark County residents now have a free bike-sharing program accessible to all for a better, more reliable, healthier lifestyle.

15 YEARS AGO, Chris Paxos had a bucket and a mop, a few cleaning supplies, a big dream, and a whole lot of motivation—but not much else.

Chris’ dream was to start a cleaning business. He was willing to work hard to make it happen, but he didn’t have the resources he needed.

“Success is more about resourcefulness than resources,” Chris said. “As a resourceful person, I explored many of our community’s opportunities, and found the Library to be an amazing free resource!”

Like many job seekers in Stark County, Stark Library became Chris’ business incubator.

When he wasn’t knocking on doors drumming up business or at the Employment Source connecting with other community organizations, he was at Stark Library. The Library stayed open later, so when the Employment Source closed, his next stop was the Library.

“For me, the Library was a business information resource,” he states. “As a lifelong learner, I continually use all of the resources available to sharpen my skills and build my business.” Chris read and listened to books to increase his knowledge. “Authors take a lifetime of learning and put it into a book. It’s just smart to take advantage of the information they’ve written.”

Chris’ story is a real-life example of the Library’s mission to Stay Smart, and offers hope to others who dream big. Lifelong learning is what Stark Library is all about. Our partnership with Ohio Means Jobs helps entrepreneurs like Chris, as well as other job seekers connect with the people, resources, and services that can lead to better jobs and improved career paths.
