DIGGIN' IN THE DARK

Each year Stark County residents of all ages join together in reading a common book and sharing ideas through community conversation.

The popularity of the farm-to-table movement, community gardens, and Farmer’s Markets inspired this year’s book selection: Gaining Ground by Forrest Pritchard. Younger readers will read Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman.

This fall, Stark County District Library joins five area libraries—North Canton Public Library, Massillon Public Library, Louisville Public Library, Minerva Public Library and Canal Fulton Public Library— to host a series of events encouraging Stark County to bring the story to life.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

One Book, One Community originated in Seattle, WA in 1998 to build community engagement and encourage sharing ideas. Now more than 400 communities nationwide, including Stark County, participate annually.

GET THE DIRT on This Year’s Books Gaining Ground by Forrest Pritchard

Forrest Pritchard is a seventh generation farmer and New York Times bestselling author.

Upon returning from college, he took over his grandparents’ farm—primarily growing GMO corn and soybeans—hoping to make the land profitable for the first time in decades. When five tractor-trailer loads of grain reaped a meager paycheck of $18.16, he realized his family’s farm must radically change. The following season, he devoted himself to farming organically and sustainably, raising free-range cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and chickens.

Twenty years later, his farm is one of the oldest “grass finished” farms in the country, and sells at leading farmers’ markets. Forrest’s book Gaining Ground, A Story of Farmer's Markets, Local Food and Saving the Family Farm was named a top read by Publishers Weekly, The Washington Post and NPR’s The Splendid Table, and is a New York Times Bestseller.

Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman

Our young readers’ selection demonstrates the impact a community has when working together. This multi-cultural exploration into urban life shows how one act, no matter how small, can bring a community together.

Paul Fleischman is a Newbery Award-winning author for children and young adults from California. His other accolades include a Newbery Honor Book, the Scott O’Dell Award for Historical Fiction, the PEN West Literary Award, and the California Young Reader Medal.

THIS FALL we launch a brand new author series in keeping with our aspiration to Share Smart and foster community engagement. The Dr. Audrey Lavin Speaking of Books Author Series will bring acclaimed writers to Stark County who inspire lively discussion and—at times— challenging conversation while exemplifying literary excellence.

Our debut 2016–2017 season features four special evenings at the Canton Palace Theater. Each bestselling author will speak about their book, followed by a wide-ranging question and answer session. The evening will end with a book signing and Friends of the Library volunteers will have copies available for purchase if you don’t yet own one.
