The night shift
Late-night talk shows fared well in 2018 By Kenneth Andeel TV Media With 2019 looming on the horizon, it’s time for retrospectives about 2018’s year in television to start pouring in. One corner of the TV world that is always worth a look is the realm of latenight talk, that distinctly North American format that shot to popularity — and eventual universality — during the second half of the 20th century. Beginning with shows like NBC’s “The Tonight Show” (launched in 1954), the late-night formula spread from network to network, evolving across many iterations and becoming a necessary staple for every major programming provider. Cable networks stepped up their latenight game in 2018. During the summer, Samantha Bee (“Full Frontal with Samantha Bee”) made headlines battling
with the Trump administration over its controversial immigration policies, and the new show saw a modest rise in ratings for her trouble. In October, E! launched “Busy Tonight,” a new take on the traditional talk show hosted by actress and social media sensation Busy Philipps (“Dawson’s Creek”). Early reception to her show has been mixed, but Philipps came out of the gate with the blessing of other hosts, cutting a promo for “Busy Tonight” that featured late-night staples such as Stephen Colbert, Conan O’Brien, Seth Meyers, Andy Cohen and others. Speaking of late-night staples, O’Brien is changing the formula of his show in an effort to accommodate young viewers who are routinely cutting cords and looking for more streamlined content. Earlier this year, O’Brien announced that his TBS show “Conan” will be condensed down to a half-hour format and will spurn some of the formal trappings associated with latenight TV. O‘Brien’s goal is to trim the fat endemic to the late-night tradition in order to offer lean, incisive episodes instead of longer ones padded with filler. His plan involves downsizing to one guest per night and editing the show’s best material into a half-hour daily episode, while offering additional daily material online for people interested in seeking it out. “Conan” has generally boasted the youngest average audience of the major late-night shows, so it makes absolute sense for him to make changes that will keep those young, media-savvy audiences connected to his show. When the subject of late-night talk shows is raised, though, what most people think of is the old standard, pioneered by the likes of Steve Allen and Johnny Carson (both of “The Tonight Show”). The formula is familiar: monologue, guests, maybe a live performance. Many of the major networks’ late-night talk shows have this blueprint in common, which makes them easy to compare and makes minor differences between hosting styles and subtle fluctuations in ratings a lot more meaningful.
If there was a 2018 winner in the late-night wars, it was probably Colbert of CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Colbert took over for David Letterman when he retired in 2015, and he began his nightly ratings battle with Jimmy Fallon, who replaced Jay Leno as host of “The Tonight Show” in 2014. In the immediate aftermath of the host switches of 2014-15, Fallon managed to hang onto Leno’s ratings lead, but in recent years, Colbert’s distinct hosting and interviewing style has eroded that lead. Colbert started to pull ahead in 2017, when his overall viewership numbers began to regularly outdo Fallon’s on a nightly basis. At that point, Fallon still retained one notch in his belt that was arguably superior to total viewership. While “The Tonight Show” had fewer overall viewers, it retained a solid lead in the most coveted demographic: viewers aged 18 to 49. Colbert had greater overall numbers, but Fallon’s slightly smaller audience consisted of a more desirable group. In 2018, though, buoyed by coverage of the U.S. midterm elections, Colbert finally managed to overtake Fallon within that coveted demo. Of course, the victory wasn’t complete or permanent — after the excitement of election week, Fallon’s show retook the lead it had previously
clung to — but now “The Late Show” has proven it can get over the hump and will be looking to do so on a regular basis. It’s worth noting that overall viewership numbers for both “The Late Show” and “The Tonight Show” are down compared to previous years, a symptom of the ongoing migration of viewers from traditional television to on-demand viewing and streaming through non-network sources. The late-night television landscape is wider than it has ever been before, and a multitude of choices are available for viewers chasing different types of content. While political humor and social commentary has been dominating the current scene, it’s possible for people to find almost any combination of host and show to vibe with their taste. The next year of late-night TV will continue to respond to the expanding desires of audiences and the continued pressure that digital media is exerting on traditional TV.

A “Northern Exposure” revival is in the works at CBS, with its original leading man on board if it should get picked up with a series order. Rob Morrow (“Numb3rs”) starred as a New York City doctor fresh out of medical school who found himself practicing in a small and remote Alaskan town. Feature Story Cast shake-ups can’t shake ‘Criminal Minds’ By Kyla Brewer TV Media TV fans are a loyal bunch, so when a television show undergoes cast changes, it’s often the beginning of the end. However, one primetime drama has been bucking that trend for almost 14 seasons, and — despite plenty of casting shakeups— it’s still going strong.
Dangerous criminals are no match for an elite squad of FBI profilers in a new episode of “Criminal Minds,” airing Wednesday, Dec. 26, on CBS. Led by experienced profiler-turned-author David Rossi (Joe Mantegna, “The Godfather III,” 1990), members of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) attempt to anticipate the actions of twisted individuals in the hopes of stopping them before they strike again in this hit broadcast drama. Mantegna currently headlines the series, but he only joined the cast in season 3 after the departure of the show’s original lead, Mandy Patinkin (“The Princess Bride,” 1987) as unit chief Jason Gideon. That’s just one of many cast changes that have occurred over the course of the show’s 14 seasons, but “Criminal Minds” is still going strong, thanks to its gripping premise and solid storylines. In the show, BAU agents track down serial killers, cult leaders, kidnapers, rapists and other criminals, seeking justice for victims and striving to protect the innocent. In addition to Mantegna, the drama’s current cast includes Special Agent Dr. Spencer Reid, played by Matthew Gray Gubler (“500 Days of Summer,” 2009), who is the only actor who has been a part of the main cast every season since the show debuted in 2005. Gubler’s Reid is a misunderstood genius who struggles socially despite, or perhaps because of, his extremely high IQ.
Aisha Tyler as seen in “Criminal Minds” Canadian actress A.J. Cook (“The Virgin Suicides,” 1999) stars as Jennifer “J.J.” Jareau, the unit’s former liaison who is now a profiler. She’s been a part of every season except season 6, when she appeared only in a recurring capacity. Her role had reportedly been cut due to budget concerns, but a fan campaign led to her being reinstated as a series regular in season 7. Fellow “Criminal Minds” star Kirsten Vangsness (“Kill Me Deadly,” 2015) has also been a series regular for all but one season. Her role as computer whiz Penelope Garcia was smaller in the first season of the show, but she’s become an integral part of the team, often providing the comic relief. Paget Brewster (“Grandfathered”) appears as Special Agent Emily Prentiss, a former head of Interpol who is the daughter of high-powered diplomats. She was a main cast member from season 2 to 7, appeared as a guest star in seasons 9 and 11, and rejoined the main cast in season 12. One of the cast’s more recent additions is Aisha Tyler (“Whose Line Is It Anyway?”) as forensic psychologist Dr. Tara Lewis. She joined the “Criminal Minds” fray as a guest star in season 11, and producers liked her so much that she appeared in 18 episodes instead of the six they’d originally planned. Not surprisingly, Tyler was promoted to series regular in season 12. Lewis specializes in studying and interviewing serial killers. Daniel Henney (“Shanghai Calling,” 2012) was promoted to series regular in season 13, having guest-starred as Special Agent Matt Simmons in seasons 10 and 12. A former member of the International Response Team, Simmons has a wife and four kids. The character also appeared in the short-lived 201617 spinoff “Criminal Minds: Beyond
Borders,” which was canceled after just two seasons. Former “CSI: Miami” star Adam Rodriguez also joined the “Criminal Minds” cast in season 12 as Luke Alvez, a former army ranger who was recruited from the FBI’s Fugitive Task Force. New this season is Stephen Bishop (“Imposters”) in a recurring role as Andrew Mendoza, a supervisory special agent who serves as a love interest for Prentiss. Memorable previous cast members include Thomas Gibson (“Dharma & Greg”) as Special Supervisory Agent Aaron Hotchner, who left the show after just two episodes of season 12 following an on-set controversy allegedly due to creative differences. Shemar Moore (“S.W.A.T.”) was part of the regular cast for 11 seasons and appeared in a guest-starring capacity as Supervisory Agent Derek Morgan in seasons 12 and 13. Even the loss of such fan favorites hasn’t shaken “Criminal Minds” from its spot as one of prime time’s most heralded dramas. The show has been nominated for several prestigious awards, including Emmys, Image Awards and People’s Choice Awards over the years, winning the 2017 People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Crime Drama. There’s no question the drama has staying power — it kicked off the new season with its milestone 300th episode and has plenty of interesting things to keep viewers engaged in the 15-episode season. In June, it was announced that several of the show’s stars will step behind the cameras to direct episodes this season. Mantegna, Tyler, Gubler and Rodriguez will all take a turn in the director chair, and Cook will make her directorial debut with one of this season’s episodes.

Q&A Hollywood By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Who does the voice of Fozzie Bear’s mother? Specifically in “A Muppet Family Christmas” from the 1980s. It seems so familiar. A: As a Muppets fan, Jerry Nelson’s voice should seem familiar to you. While they often bring in big-name stars for on-screen cameos, the various Muppet movies and shows tend to stick to a small group of regular players for their off-screen puppeteering and voice work. Nelson is a member of that inner circle, performing and
providing the voices of literally hundreds of Muppets over time, including Emily Bear, also known as Ma, in the 1987 TV special “A Muppet Family Christmas.” His voice as Emily probably sounds familiar because it’s not too far from the voice he does for Robin, Kermit’s nephew. It’s quite different from his other most famous character, the much deeper-voiced Count von Count from “Sesame Street.” Nelson was one of the early Muppets players, joining in the early ‘70s. Robin and the Count are just his best-known characters. He’s been involved in every major Muppets production since the old “Saturday Night Live” days, and, according to IMDB, he did a whopping 213 different characters in “The Muppet Show” alone. Sadly, Nelson died in 2012. Many of his characters, including Robin and the Count, are now voiced by a luminary in the new generation of Muppeteers, Matt Vogel.

the Hallmark Channel Christmasmovie machine. The two biggest revelations were that the films are shockingly cheap to make, and that they actually work from a checklist. The movies take about three weeks to make, at a budget of about $2 million. That’s closer to the time and cost of a single TV episode, rather than an entire feature film. Frequent Hallmark film director Ron Oliver drew another comparison: $2 million is roughly “the catering budget for ‘Transformers.’” The Wall Street Journal talked to different sources and found that Hallmark has developed a checklist it applies to all of its Christmas movies. While the particular plots can vary (somewhat), all of them must feature classic Christmas moments wrapping presents, choosing a tree and baking. Thus, the films all have the same cozy feeling despite the (again, minor) storyline variations. Of course, all this cold calculation doesn’t eliminate the idea that Hallmark is staffed entirely by incurable Christmas romantics. After all, regardless of how they do it, it’s clear that the network is pretty devoted to this one holiday.

Flavortown Market goes to the greens and beans By Andrew Warren TV Media No surprise here: our society is one that loves to eat meat. Flavorful chicken, rich beef, falloff-the-bone pork and the ocean’s delicious bounty are foods that have places of honor on our tables, but we all know that most of us should eat a little less meat — it’s good for the environment and it’s good for our bodies, too.
Well, the latest episode of “Guy’s Grocery Games” is going meatless. Contestants cook through three vegetable-inspired rounds as they try to beat out the competition and prove that greens and beans can be just as delicious as their meatier counterparts in a new episode airing Wednesday, Dec. 26, on Food Network. In the first round of the competition, host Guy Fieri gives the competing chefs a list of ingredients that their dishes must feature. Then, in the second round, the chefs spin a wheel that randomly gives each of them a meat dish that they must make vegetarian. Finally, Guy gets tricky in the final round and takes away the remaining competitors’ shopping carts before sending them out to shop for the ingredients needed to make their guilty pleasure dishes. “Guy’s Grocery Games” is similar to other cooking competition shows, with a chef getting the ax after each round once the judges have had a chance to taste and evaluate all of the dishes. The contest is held inside of a supermarket, and the competitors are required to “shop” for their own ingredients from the store’s shelves, and all sorts of twists tie into the unique milieu. The judges that Guy has brought in to taste this week’s meatless meals are a who’s who of Food Network celebrity chefs. There’s a pair of “Food Network Star” winners in Damaris Phillip (“Southern at Heart”) and Aarti Sequeira (“Aarti Party”), along with frequent judge and “Top Chef: AllStars” winner Richard Blais. Veggies don’t have to be boring, and with those three discerning judges ready to taste everything on the
