Cover Story The battle rages on Travel through time with ‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’ By Francis Babin TV Media The holiday season is shaping up to be a real treat for comic book lovers and superhero fans. This month alone we will see “SpiderMan: Into the Spider-Verse,” “Once Upon a Deadpool” and DC Comics’ “Aquaman” hit the big screen. While Spidey and others dominate the cineplexes, relax, catch up with your favorite smallscreen heroes and enjoy some outof-this-world action as they continue their battle against the most dangerous criminals in the universe in an episode of “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” airing Monday, Dec. 17, on CW.
For years entertainment pundits have predicted that the superhero bubble would burst. It’s just a matter of time, they’d say, as with all entertainment trends, before people eventually tire of these types of stories and move on to something else (see the western). It seems, however, that the general public is quite content with the numerous superhero tales found on the big and small screen these days, and is not quite ready to move on. We are living in a golden age of television, and that extends to the superhero genre as well. Taking full advantage of the medium’s potential, CW and DC

have created a rich universe to showcase some of their best and most interesting characters and storylines. Since the debut of “Arrow” in 2012, the series has served as a launching pad for numerous new characters who have gone on to star in their own series, and in turn launch other characters such as The Flash. The Arrowverse is made up of the aforementioned “Arrow” and “The Flash,” as well as “Supergirl,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” and two web series. In “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” we follow a rag-tag team of dysfunctional time-traveling superheroes assembled by Rip Hunter, the Time Master (Arthur Darvill, “Broadchurch”) as they battle havoc-wreaking villains.
The ever-growing Legends team is primarily comprised of Ray Palmer/ Atom (Brandon Routh, “Chuck”); Sara Lance/White Canary (Caity Lotz, “Mad Men”); Martin Stein (Victor Garber, “Alias”) and Jefferson “Jax” Jackson (Franz Drameh, “Edge of Tomorrow,” 2014), who make up Firestorm; Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée, “Master of None”); Carter Hall/ Hawkman (Falk Hentschel, “The Alienist”); Leonard Snart/Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller, “Prison Break”); and Mick Rory/Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell, “Prison Break”). Over the course of three seasons, the Legends have fought many battles against Vandal Savage (Casper Crump, “The Legend of Tarzan,” 2016), Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough, “Desperate Housewives”) and other dastardly foes, but it seems that they have finally met their match. Last season ended on a triumphant note as the team celebrated the defeat of the demon Mallus, but unfortunately things aren’t as easy as they’d hoped. By defeating the season’s big bad, the team created more problems. Bigger problems. The barrier between worlds has softened and magical creatures are penetrating our heroes’ world like never before. This season, the team, along with John Constantine (Matt Ryan, “Constantine”), must contend with magical creatures from myths, fairy
tales and legends. These “fugitives,” as our heroes refer to them, are extremely dangerous and have only death and destruction on their minds. Will our heroes be able to fend off these monsters? And how will the disintegrating barrier between worlds impact the rest of the Arrowverse? Only time will tell, but what is certain is that it will be a wild ride. Due in large part to the massive success of the Marvel films, we live in a time of shared universes. Nowadays, everything from “John Wick” (2014) to “The Conjuring” (2013) is trying to get in on the action by creating series destined to spawn spinoffs, sequels, prequels and even the rare sidequel. Most of these cinematic universes have failed to take off (see the Dark Universe) or have been underwhelming both critically and commercially, but the Arrowverse and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” have succeeded where most have failed. This success can be attributed to interesting characters, compelling plots and solid villains, among many other factors. Over the years, DC has earned a reputation for its dark, grim and ultra-serious films such as the recent blockbusters “Man of Steel” (2013) and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016). Yet the company has taken a completely different approach for its television properties.
Unlike Ben Affleck’s brooding (and extremely violent) Batman, the heroes seen in the Arrowverse, and especially in “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” are fun, quippy, flashy and absolutely over the top. Week after week, the time-traveling misfits visit new and fascinating places like Victorian London and 17th-century feudal Japan where they take on often ridiculous villains. The way Firestorm and the gang defeat these villains is equally ridiculous. Case in point: last season ended with an epic battle between a stuffed toy (think of a Tickle Me Elmo) and a dragon demon. In short, the series is a unique breath of fresh air that does not take itself too seriously. On Monday, Dec. 17, recover from the stunning events of the “Elseworlds” crossover and reacquaint yourself with “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” as they take on magical creatures from myths, fairy tales and legends on CW.

Thanksgiving is next week, and I heard about a new recipe where you can make a turkey that’s covered in glitter. Feature Story Quitting ‘Time’: NBC sends ‘Timeless’ off in style By Shona Dustan TV Media It’s tough to be a television fan these days. So often we invest in a series, get attached, and then networks pull the rug out from under us: canceled, they say. That’s how fans of the thrilling time-travel series “Timeless” were feeling back in June when NBC announced that the series would be axed after only two seasons. Taking to the internet, said fans began to make noise, and lots of it.
In a very rare and unexpected turn of events, all that noise paid off — while the series was not completely revived, the network did commit to producing two more episodes in what amounts to a feature-length season finale (with some Christmas themes, no less) airing Thursday, Dec. 20, on the peacock network. And thank goodness for that. The season 2 finale really left us hanging, and fans are desperate to find out what happens to their favorite characters. For the uninitiated, “Timeless” stars Abigail Spencer (“Suits”) as Lucy Preston, an exceptionably knowledgeable and passionate history professor who is roped into joining a team of time travelers intent on saving history as we know it. Joining her on these world-saving missions are MSG Wyatt Logan (Matt Lanter, “90210”), a Delta Force operative with a tragic past, and scientist Rufus Carlin (Malcolm Barrett, “Preacher”), part of the team of programmers who built the time machines in the first place. That’s right, time machines — plural. The time machine our heroes use is known as “the Lifeboat” because it was only built as a backup in case something went wrong with the “Mothership.” And, of course, something did go wrong. That something is Garcia Flynn (Goran Višnjic, “ER”), a

By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: What is the true reason “Ray Donovan” killed off [that character it killed off]? It doesn’t make sense to me. A: It seems crazy to offer a spoiler alert for a fact that defined the entire previous season of a show, but in the age of DVRs and binge-watching, who knows how far behind people are. In that spirit, here goes: spoiler alert. I’m about to reveal a major plot point from the beginning of the most recent season of “Ray Donovan.” The gritty Showtime drama killed off Abby, Ray’s (Liev Schreiber, “Spotlight,” 2015) wife, between seasons 4 and 5 — she was alive at the end of one, and dead by the next. A reviewer at Vulture. com called it “as shocking a development as any major show has attempted in years.” As for why the show made such a bold move, it seems that it was all done in service of the plot. An Entertainment Weekly review of the entire fifth season argued that Abby’s death was the plot point that shaped the whole thing. “Death has been the one reliable thing in this season.”
However, note that killing off the character didn’t mean she stopped appearing in the show. She showed up almost as frequently in season 5 via flashback scenes as she did in contemporary scenes in the first four seasons. This is proof that the actress was at least somewhat complicit in the process — there was obviously no dramatic, behind-the-scenes blow-up that led to actress Paula Malcomson (“Sons of Anarchy”) quitting or being fired, since she showed up to shoot the flashbacks. Indeed, even before her character died, Malcomson had to play her as a cancer patient, which was when she learned she was being written out of the series. However, she was given a lot of room to guide how that death played out. In an interview with GoldDerby. com, she said that she insisted on a representation of living with cancer that was every bit as heavy and raw as the rest of the show. “We talked about it and we agreed to show some of the very painful side of what cancer does. Otherwise let’s just shoot her in the head and call it a day, you know?”

Extreme holidays Incredible Christmas delights are on display in ‘Extreme Cake Makers’ By Andrew Warren TV Media Christmas is almost upon us, and it’s a busy time of year for bakers. Whether a professional with culinary school training or a home baker who bakes for friends and family, bakers of all stripes are busy blending, whisking and kneading as they whip up incredible festive favorites.
For the bakers in Cooking Channel’s “Extreme Cake Makers,” the holidays really aren’t that different from the rest of the year — they’re still pulling out all the stops to make some of the most fantastical cake creations that can be imagined. Currently airing Friday evenings, each episode of the British import follows several U.K.-based bakers as they create amazing edible treats that have to be seen to be believed. This week’s episode, airing Friday, Dec. 21, is all about — you guessed it — Christmas. The master cake makers are hard at work as the holiday season gets into full swing, with one of them crafting an edible reindeer that would make Santa Claus himself proud. Meanwhile, bakers Christine and Phil plot out a way to make immaculately detailed cake presents, and then work on mastering the meticulous details required to bring the Christmas cake magic to life. Baker Eloise is in the holiday spirit, too, and she creates a cake that’s filled with local landmarks to celebrate the Christmas season in her hometown. Meanwhile, cake master Molly branches out into gingerbread as she builds a gingerbread house masterpiece that creates a perfect fairy-tale ending. Things get back to normal once Christmas is past, and in next week’s episode, things get royal. While Rosie bakes a life-size Prince Charming cake, Phil and Christine bake for a real-life prince when Prince Charles himself gives their creations his royal approval.
