ASHER A thousand times more rare than diamonds, tanzanite has made its mark on the jewelry world like few other stones. It was discovered in 1967 in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, western Africa. Since then, many have been romanced by this stone.

Its great allure comes from the wide range of colors that it radiates along each of its three crystallographic axis: a rich deep blue when viewed from one angle, amethystine to red from another, and various hues of brown from a third. Smaller pieces tend to have lighter tones, with lavender and periwinkle the most common. In larger sizes, the gem typically displays deeper, richer blues and purples. It is this mesmerizing saturation of color that has made tanzanite so sought after.

pleasure The making of single-malt Scotch Turning grain into the precious liquid known as Scotch whisky is by no means easy — or quick. Single-malt Scotch, arguably the most prized of the prized, requires even more attention to strict standards and regulations.

All Scotch is the result of grain being converted to malt, which is turned into a mash that is fermented; the liquid is distilled and finally aged in oak casks for a minimum of three years, although most distillers give it eight or 20 years (and some even longer). Maturation must take place in Scotland or the beverage can’t be called Scotch, no matter how scrupulously its makers follow every other rule.

It’s both, actually. And believe it or not, it matters a great deal to the countries that pride themselves on their whiskey . . . uh, whisky.

The New York Times noticed a certain pattern in the spellings and came up with this rule of thumb: If made in a country with an “e” in its name, it’s spelled with an “e.” If it’s from a country without that letter, it’s spelled without.

So that’s why Scotland makes whisky and Ireland makes whiskey.

Most Scotch is blended, combining batches from several distilleries. Single-malt Scotch may be made at only one distillery and only from barley. It has to be distilled in a pot still. It may be bottled from several casks, as long as those casks all came from the same distillery.

Your single-malt may be even older than the 12 or 20 years posted on the label. That’s just the youngest batch in the mix.

It’s a long, exacting process, but those who dedicate themselves to its earthy, bold flavor say it’s well worth the wait.

• 80 ml Amarula Cream • Twirl of lemon zest to garnish • 30ml white rum • Sprig of fresh mint • Pinch of freshly grated lemon zest

• 125 ml freshly brewed espresso coffee • 60 ml gold tequila • 60 ml Sheridan’s® • 4 scoops vanilla ice cream

Lightly crush the mint leaves between your fingers or with the back of a spoon.

Place in a cocktail shaker or blender. Add remaining ingredients and shake or blend for 30 seconds. Pour over crushed ice into a martini glass. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and/or a twirl of lemon zest.

Combine the coffee, tequila and Sheridan’s in a heatproof jug.

Spoon the ice-cream among serving glasses. Pour over the coffee mixture and serve immediately.
