Curatorial Statement

I’m so happy to welcome you to Stanford Live’s 2023-24 season in my role as Acting Director. The artists who will animate our stages in the coming months are bringing stories of reflection, reinvention and reimagination at a time of transition in the world around us and also at home.

As we move through our own transition at Stanford Live, we’d like to give a special thanks to Chris Lorway for his leadership from 2016 to 2023. Through his strategic and expansive vision, Chris has left an indelible mark on the organization. He was instrumental in significantly expanding the programming at our celebrated venues of Bing Concert Hall and Frost Amphitheater, working with a diverse group of artists to commission new work, and placing Stanford Live at the forefront of the performing arts.

We invite you to join us as we imagine new pathways and possibilities and hope to see you at a performance soon.

"Human beings have told stories from time immemorial, for stories are a natural product of spoken language, an outgrowth of the imaginative power that most clearly separates us from other animals. The story is a universal ingredient of human culture, bringing relief from the tedium of everyday labor and reminding listeners of their own values, beliefs and history.” — B

When choreographer Akram Khan visited Stanford in 2017, he spoke on a public panel about how society keeps returning to the same myths and how artists will often take these foundational stories and reshape them through a contemporary lens (as he did, drawing from the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata for his Until the Lions). This process often helps bridge between generations as stories–both written and through oral traditions–are passed down across time.

At the core of this season are stories we know well – Frankenstein , Moby Dick , Romeo and Juliet, and The Jungle Book. In each case, artists have reinvented these tales in ways that may challenge your memories of them. What if Romeo and Juliet survived the poison and now found themselves facing a midlife crisis? How would the tales of The Jungle Book be retold against the backdrop of a climate crisis? What happened in the life of Mary Shelley that led her to create the world’s most famous monster?

As a child, one of my favorite things to do when visiting my grandparents was to dig through their bookcases looking for my next read. In many of the older editions, there were beautiful black and white etchings that visually captured key moments in the narrative. In this vein, we’ve commissioned four etchings from artist Steven Noble that are interspersed throughout the brochure, designed to illustrate the transformation from old to new.

In addition to the programs above, we have once again assembled a stellar line-up of music, dance and theater from around the world, including return visits from Rhiannon Giddens (with the Silk Road Ensemble), Takács Quartet, and Emanuel Ax. And stay tuned for exciting announcements throughout the season about Frost Amphitheater shows and our popular Studio series.

Finally, it has been an amazing seven years for me at Stanford Live and I will miss all the great friends I have made here. I’m very proud of all that the Stanford Live team has accomplished during my tenure and will forever be cheering you on from north of the border.

Music to Accompany a Departure

Los Angeles Master Chorale

Directed by Peter Sellars

Following their widely acclaimed collaboration on Lagrime di San Pietro, Peter Sellars, Grant Gershon and singers of the Los Angeles Master Chorale reunite with a deeply personal meditation on what it means to say goodbye in times of struggle. The luminous music of the Baroque composer Heinrich Schütz serves as the inspiration for this ceremony of remembrance and devotion.

Schütz composed the Musikalische Exequien (Music to Accompany a Departure) during the terrible ravages of the 30 Years War, and it was dedicated to the

memory of one of his dearest friends and benefactors. Schütz is widely regarded as the greatest German composer before Bach, and the Musikalische Exequien was the first requiem written in the language of the people rather than Latin. The music speaks with both quiet emotion and enormous depth of feeling. This is a vocal work of soaring purity, with solo voices interacting with a constantly shifting combination of choral forces.

Akram Khan Jungle Book reimagined

In Akram Khan’s new dance-theater production based on the original story of Rudyard Kipling’s much-loved family classic, Khan and his team reinvent the journey of Mowgli through the eyes of a climate refugee.

Featuring an original score, ten international dancers and state-of-the-art animation and visuals, Jungle Book reimagined is a beautifully compelling and vital piece of storytelling about our intrinsic need to belong and bond with others, and placing the importance of connecting with and respecting our natural world at its heart.

As a child who grew up slightly obsessed with The Bare Necessities, Kipling’s The Jungle Book has been a story I keep returning to. So, I was excited to learn that Akram Khan (who's Until the Lions was the hit of our 2017-18 season) was creating a new movement theater version of this iconic tale, exploring the tensions between humanity, nature and the climate crisis. The result is everything that you would expect from Akram – masterful storytelling, magical design and mesmerizing choreography, converging to breathe new life into one of the world’s most celebrated collections of stories.

Claire Chase and JACK Quartet

Claire Chase is a gifted flutist, interdisciplinary artist, and educator passionate about elevating the creations of composers of this generation. Chase has given the world premieres of hundreds of new works with her trademark grace and thoughtful execution. Accompanied by JACK Quartet, she will premiere a new, Stanford Live commissioned piece by the brilliant minimalist composer Terry Riley.

Kronos Quartet: Five Decades

For nearly 50 years, San Francisco’s Kronos Quartet - David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola), and Paul Wiancko (cello) - have blended sounds across lines of culture and era, moving beyond the typical terrain for a string quartet. Through brave sonic explorations into the pressing issues of our time, Kronos has established a worldwide influence. To celebrate their 50th anniversary they’ll be performing a piece by Gabriella Smith, commissioned by Stanford Live, along with “Chernobyl. The Harvest” by Mariana Sadovska.

Broken Chord

South African choreographer Gregory Maqoma is a curatorial visionary who merges movement, theater, dance, visuals, and music with a sense of pulse and breath. Featuring four soloists and an onstage a cappella chorus, Maqoma’s new work tells the story of a South African–based chorus whose tour through North America and England in the late 19th century was marred by the realities of racism. The piece concretizes the burden of the white gaze and what it feels like to move beyond the constricting box it constructs.

Wonderful Joe

Canadian puppeteer Ronnie Burkett ( Little Willy, The Daisy Theatre) returns with a new Stanford Live commissioned work examining the feelings of isolation and loneliness. Dark and poetic, yet magical, Wonderful Joe and his dog Mister go on a fantastic journey into the world in search of home.

Sirocco

A collaboration between UK-based Manchester Collective and South-African cellist Abel Selaocoe, Sirocco, is a celebration of folk traditions from around the world led by the inimitable Selaocoe, a musician described as “a star in the making” (The Arts Desk). Expect a bristling, high-energy performance with a program that weaves between original settings of African music, Danish folk songs, and classical music like you’ve never heard it before.

Hailed by The New Yorker ”not simply for the quality of their music making, exalted as it is, but for the joy they take in the act of connection,” the acclaimed St. Lawrence continues its fabled partnership with Stanford.

We’d like to dedicate this season of Sundays with the St. Lawrence to co-founder Geoff Nuttall, who passed away last year. He was a charismatic musician who played boldly as the first violinist of the St. Lawrence String Quartet.

Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra

Under the musical direction of Richard Egarr, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale (PBO) is one of the Bay Area’s greatest musical treasures. Considered the most versatile ensemble of its kind, and performing on period instruments, PBO presents repertoire ranging from early Baroque to late Romantic, as well as new works and major operatic productions.

Handel was a man who understood the theater and its audience - always after his next hit, seeking to please his public. In this concert of contrasts and connections, we showcase his music for the stage, always recognizable by its emotional clarity, and at the heart of the evening place a duo of compositions exploring the creation story by two of today’s most powerful musical voices: Errollyn Wallen and PBO’s Composer in Residence Tarik O’Regan. Star British countertenor Tim Mead reprises these powerful performances in the Bay Area following acclaimed concerts in the United Kingdom last summer.

Mendelssohn’s ever-popular violin concerto, full of drama and exquisite melody, here accompanies a real raritySchumann’s hauntingly beautiful Requiem. Written after he had committed himself to an asylum, it’s a fantastic showcase for the rich, resonant sound of the Philharmonia Chorale.

Born and raised in the Bronx, rising star Samara Joy’s velvety, smooth voice puts her own enchanting interpretation on jazz standards from the Great American Songbook. On her Grammy award winning album, Linger Awhile, 23-year-old Samara Joy makes her case to join the likes of Sarah, Ella, and Billie as the next jazz singing sensation recorded by the venerable Verve Records.

Manual Cinema's Frankenstein

Love, loss, and creation merge in unexpected ways as Manual Cinema presents its thrilling version of the classic Gothic tale Frankenstein The Chicago-based performance collective imaginatively combines shadow puppetry, cinematic techniques, sound effects, and live music in haunting shows like nothing else you’ve ever seen.

“Thus strangely are our souls constructed, and by slight ligaments are we bound to prosperity and ruin.”

As modern-day society wrestles with the implications of new advances in artificial intelligence, one cannot help but reflect on the ethical questions raised in Shelley’s Frankenstein, where the intersection of science and humanity births a tragic creature who both is feared and pitied. In their third visit to Stanford Live, Manuel Cinema (Ada/Ava, No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks) brings its largest and most complex multidisciplinary spectacle to the Bing Concert Hall.

American Railroad

American Railroad highlights the cultural diffusion and collaboration that resulted as African American, Chinese, Irish, and Native American communities made vital contributions to the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. Terri Lyne Carrington presents an evening of jazz tunes composed by women – now there’s an idea. For too long, jazz standards – the tunes that dominate jazz repertory and that young musicians are taught to master – have almost exclusively been composed by men. From “My Funny Valentine ” to “Maiden Voyage,” they are beloved compositions. But where are the women? As founder and artistic director of the Berklee Institute for Jazz and Gender Justice, Carrington has curated a newly published compilation of New Standards composed by women, including Carla Bley, Cassandra Wilson, Marilyn Crispell, Lil Hardin Armstrong, Eliane Elias, Jaime Branch, Luciana Souza, Hiromi, Emily Remler, Anat Cohen, and others.

Pulcinella Suite

Embrace the elegant structure and exquisite sense of restraint of Austrian composer Joseph Haydn, one of music’s most prominent “architects” during the Classical period. American cellist Sterling Elliott joins Daniel Hope and New Century for Haydn’s beloved first cello concerto, a virtuoso showpiece for the instrument. In the second half of the program, Igor Stravinsky’s playful ballet suite from Pulcinella offers a contrasting 20th century response to Haydn, using the amorous hijinks of the famous Italian clown to tinker unpredictably (and to the delight of modern audiences) with the shapes and patterns of centuries-old Classical melodies.

Wu Tsang's MOBY DICK; or, The Whale

Award-winning filmmaker and visual artist Wu Tsang and the collective Moved by the Motion embark upon a feature-length, silent-film telling of Herman Melville’s great American novel. The film includes original music composed by Caroline Shaw and Andrew Yee with Asma Maroof, performed live by the New Century Chamber Orchestra.

This adaptation, written by Sophia Al-Maria and directed by Tsang, follows the white whale above and below the surface of the water, developing a visual cosmology that resists the exploration and exploitation of the earth under imperial colonialism. The narrative is interwoven with extracts by the Sub-Sub-Librarian, and tackles the novel’s subterranean currents, encountering the resistance of the ship’s hydrarchy, or organizational structure, and collectives of “mariners, renegades, and cast aways,” as described by historian C.L.R. James.

Moby Dick is a classic story of man versus nature. Captain Ahab’s obsession with the whale suggests the only way for humans to gain dominion over something is to destroy it. At a time when the culture wars are once again dividing American society, Tsang’s Moby Dick presents a world that aims to transcend these issues. In a recent feature in the NY Times, she suggested that her work is designed “to find ways of bringing together people who might not otherwise see each other as worthy of interaction.”

Wild Up

Julius Eastman was an American maverick and radical who challenged the exclusionary foundations of European classical music and organized his compositions as tools for social change. Eastman was also an activist who deployed his life experiences as a gay African American as the impetus to question what it means to be American and an artist, and the ideals of United States and western classical music. Wild Up Artistic Director Christopher Rountree launched the ensemble in 2010 with a vision that rejected outdated traditions and threw classical repertoire into the context of pop culture, new music, and performance art.

Lost Dog’s Juliet & Romeo reveals the real story of Shakespeare’s most revered couple. In this version, Romeo and Juliet didn’t die in a tragic misunderstanding. They grew up and lived happily ever after. Well, they lived at least.

Now Romeo and Juliet are 40ish. At least one of them is in the grips of a mid-life crisis. They feel constantly mocked by their teenage selves and are haunted by the pressures of being the poster couple for romantic love. They have decided to confront their current struggles by putting on a performance in front of a live audience – about themselves. Their therapist told them it was a terrible idea.

Directed by Olivier Award-nominated Ben Duke, Juliet & Romeo takes on our obsession with youth and the inevitable issues with romantic longevity.

“Do not swear by the moon, for she changes constantly. Then your love would also change.”

Romeo and Juliet, arguably Shakespeare’s most famous play, has evolved into one of the core myths of our time. A story of unrequited love that faces unsurmountable obstacles and ends in tragedy, Romeo and Juliet has provided the source material for opera, ballet, popular film and other contemporary mediums (e.g. Bernstein’s West Side Story). Where last season we saw this story interpreted by Ronnie Burkett’s raunchy marionettes, this year we get a slightly different spin on the tale. Award-winning director Ben Duke asks the audience to join in a drama therapy session where the now 40-something couple (who somehow survived their poisonous end) reflect on their past as they grapple with the realities of mid-life and all its challenges.

In a new piece by Gavin Bryars, Viano String Quartet and Mahan Esfahani come together with sharp coherence. Viano String Quartet are First Prize winners of the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition, and their crispness as an ensemble continues to enjoy international praise. The combined force of Viano and critically-acclaimed harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani is bound to inspire awe.

Mahan Esfahani has made it his life’s mission to rehabilitate the harpsichord, bringing it into the mainstream of concert instruments. Performances by the Iranian-born harpsichordist leave critics breathless and audiences rapt - his light touch and superhuman agility conjuring interpretations that are “exquisite beyond measure” (Los Angeles Times).

We have long wanted to invite harpsichord innovator and Stanford alum Mahan Esfahani to perform on the series. Making up for lost time, audiences can experience his artistry and creative programming in two settings: with Viano and a solo recital where his creative programming choices can really shine.

The world-renowned Takács Quartet was founded in 1975 in Budapest, Hungary. Today the quartet, comprised of Edward Dusinberre, Harumi Rhodes (violins), Richard O’Neill (viola) and András Fejér (cello), captivates audiences with their innovative programming. In collaboration with bandoneon virtuoso Julian Labro, the program features music from Labro, Dessner, Bach, Ravel, and more.

Meet two of the international classical scene’s brightest shining stars in a high flying collaboration on the stage at Bing Concert Hall. Daniel Lozakovich, a genius violinist and Behzod Abduraimov, a highly-renowned pianist in his own right, perform a program featuring Prokofieff, Schumann, and Beethoven.

A daring new work by composer Huang Ruo and puppeteer /designer/director Basil Twist, Book of Mountains and Seas is a modern take on ancient Chinese creation myths, first transcribed in the 4th Century BC, yet strikingly relevant to our current struggle with climate change. An ensemble of massive puppets, as fanciful as they are terrifying, and the chorus of Ars Nova Copenhagen challenge us through music and stunning visual tableaux to consider the power of the natural world and our vital, yet tenuous, relationship to it.

Basil Twist is a third-generation puppeteer and object theater artist, renowned globally for his visionary adaptations of opera, dance, and theater. Chinese-born American composer Huang Ruo has been called “one of the world’s leading young composers” and was formerly Composer in Residence at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

The Living Earth Show

In their brilliant collaboration, Lyra , The Living Earth Show and Post:ballet embody the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice , viscerally studying questions of empathy, technology, and our relationship to the natural world. The music of composer Samuel Adams, the movement of choreographer Vanessa Thiessen, and the cinematography of Benjamin Tarquin come together in the perfect balance of entrancing rhythms and captivating movement. Created both in quarantine and in person, Lyra seamlessly weaves together digital and physical realms, with The Living Earth Show gracing the stage with their refreshing sonic explorations.

In her continuous quest to explore the outer bounds of what is possible for the guitar, SEI is a new fulllength performance piece where guitar movement takes over the entire stage. In SEI (which means "six" in Italian), guitarists become dancers, coordinating their whole bodies to perform the rigors of both choreography and composition. Multiple guitars on stands are spaced out strategically, in a design allowing for music and movement to be created between them. In SEI , the relationship between the players is revealed musically and physically, a progression of distance and space-like the progression between the six individual strings of the guitar.

Memorials to Extinct Birds

The Lost Bird Project by Todd McGrain is part natural history, part artist’s diary, documenting the extraordinary effort to place a series of public memorials to birds driven to extinction in modern times. As a chronicle of humankind’s impact on our changing world and a moving record of dwindling biodiversity, The Lost Bird Project is an ode to vanished

times and vanished species. The Great Auk, Labrador Duck, Passenger Pigeon, Carolina Parakeet, and Heath Hen were birds that once filled unique niches in the North American landscape from the shores of Labrador and New York to the Midwestern plains. Across the great American prairie, the skies were nearly black with Passenger Pigeons whose

disappearance, like the buffalo’s, was thought to be inconceivable.

As works of site-specific environmental art, the sculptures featured in The Lost Bird Project were originally placed in the locations where the birds were last seen in the wild and are currently placed throughout the Stanford Arts District.
