FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Latin Americanist Community, The region of Latin America and the Caribbean is vibrant and fascinating but most often taken for granted. For most people in the United States, Latin America remains exotic and alien, while also proximate and familiar. Events in Latin America do not make spectacular headlines, nor are they at the forefront of U.S. foreign policy debates. This is because, despite the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Venezuela, the authoritarian reversals, or the exodus of refugees escaping violence from Central America, our region is characterized by optimism and stability.

In most countries, economic and social advances are real, even as inequality, poverty, and exclusion are still prevalent. Efforts at environmental preservation and a better stewardship of our precious resources abound, even as global warming and lost biodiversity remain daunting challenges for the world and the region. Artistic and cultural expressions remain unique, ever seeking to reinvent and reimagine. The scourge of corruption is being addressed head on, even though much remains to be done in order to create truly accountable leaders in the region. Indigenous and African descent peoples and communities are increasingly empowered, even though ancestral lands and resources are threatened by extractive endeavors, and racism remains deeply ingrained in our societies. The region is not stagnant but rather dynamic and continually changing.

Many of us became students of Latin America in a quest to understand the specificities and the generalizable patterns in the economics, politics, history, society, and culture of Latin America. We were fascinated by the fast pace of change, exhibiting often contradictory manifestations of social conformity coupled with fierce resistance. We were often thrilled to observe the impetus of novelty grounded in deeply ingrained traditions. A region where the improvised and spontaneous is coupled with the methodical and purposeful. Latin America is always full of surprises, and whatever we think we know, we need to constantly reassess and reexamine.

Casa Bolivar, unassuming and often taken for granted, our little corner of campus, has opened the eyes and hearts of our students, both graduates and undergraduates, and particularly our M.A. cohorts. We have embraced visitors from all over Latin America, mostly through our Tinker Visiting Professorship (TVP), as well as other academic exchanges. And support from generous donors has made it possible for our students to experience the region, sometimes for the first time, through summer internships. We are able to continue offering many valuable programs, including language training and educational outreach to the K-14 community, as a result of our successful U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center and Foreign Language Area Studies grant proposal.

FROM THE DIRECTOR One of the things I have enjoyed the most since I became director of the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) has been meeting many alumni. Invariably, I am told how decisive the short time at Bolivar House was to their professional paths and achievements. We will continue providing a space for visitors and students, and our larger university and local community, to learn about Latin America and the Caribbean, forming the next generation of Latinamericanists. This year, CLAS has sought to be especially attentive to some of the current events unfolding in the region, providing a space where scholars can make sense of those processes. We have provided opportunities for teaching and training. We have sponsored conferences, talks, and workshops. We are, above all, a community of learning.

We have invited charismatic leaders, from former Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff (introduced by Angela Davis) to Mario Luna, a brave and outspoken indigenous Yaqui social advocate. First-rate scholars have shared with us their research on topics as diverse as the staging of AntĂ­gona, the genomic makeup of the Americas, the economics of peace, and the conservation of Colombian rainforests. Our Tinker Visiting Professors have taught us about topics as diverse as electronic music, popular dance, symbolic logic, legislative institutions, environmental protection, and banking for the poor. Legal scholars have ranged from a Brazilian Supreme Court Justice to a group of lawyers committed to dealing with child abductions across the U.S.-Mexico border.

While we have hosted high-profile personalities, we have also continued to hold our open house with tamales, cafecito, and aguas frescas to express gratitude to our

campus service workers. Students have organized study groups and activities, including providing volunteer Nahuatl classes for our community on Saturdays. We have sponsored discussions on the legacy of Trotsky in political movements in the region, the risks faced by journalists covering news on violence, as well as informal tertulias with friends, writers, and colleagues.

Our commencement speaker was an astrophysicist, with a deep personal commitment to social justice in Chiapas, Guatemala, and Ecuador. We visited Mexico with a group of teachers to train them on how to teach the Mexican Revolution to students across the U.S. We sponsored training in indigenous languages, specifically Nahuatl and Quechua. And we continued expanding the Latin American collection in our libraries as well as collaborating with our museum and other campus cultural venues.

And we have witnessed how an incredible group of young men and women became our new cohort of Latinamericanists through our M.A. program.

None of this would be possible without the generous funding from, among other donors, the U.S. Department of Education, Stanford Global Studies, and the Tinker Foundation, as well as the enthusiasm and support of our affiliated faculty, our advisory board, our center staff and student workers, and the intelligent public attending our events.

BOLIVAR HOUSE VISITORS Tinker Visiting Professors Carlos Eduardo Areces,

Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina Carlos Eduardo Areces holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Universiteit van Amsterdam, The Netherlands and researches computational logic, with a special emphasis on modal logic. In spring 2018, Professor Areces taught PHIL 156A: Modal Logistics: A Modern Perspective.

Rodrigo Cádiz , Pontificia Universidad Católica, Chile

Rodrigo Cádiz holds a Ph.D. in music technology from Northwestern University and researches sonification, sound synthesis, audio digital processing, computer and electroacoustic music, and composition, as well as new interfaces for musical expression. In spring 2018, Professor Cádiz taught MUSIC 154F: Electroacoustic Music Analysis and was a composer in residence with the Stanford Laptop Orchestra at the Center for Computer-based Research in Music and Acoustics.

Florencia Garramuño,

Universidad de San Andrés, Argentina Florencia Garramuño holds a Ph.D. in romance languages and literatures from Princeton University and researches contemporary literature and culture, tango, samba, popular culture, and photography. In winter 2018, Professor Garramuño taught ILAC 226: Impersonality and Anonymity in Contemporary Latin American Culture.

Claudia Leal , Universidad de los Andes, Colombia

Claudia Leal holds a Ph.D. in geography from the University of California, Berkeley and researches rainforest regions, focusing on the transition from slavery to freedom in the Pacific coast of Colombia, with a broader interest in the role of race in the building of Latin American societies. Professor Leal taught HISTORY 276K/376K: The Nature State: Latin American Conservation in Global Perspective in winter 2018 and HISTORY 278D/378D: Race, Ethnicity, and the Environment in Latin America in spring 2018.

Enrique Seira, Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México

Enrique Seira holds a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University and researches development economics, credit markets, and political participation. In spring 2018, Professor Seira taught ECON129: Credit Markets and Development: Some Evidence from Latin America and the World.

Carlos Pereira, Escola Brasileira de Administração Pública e de Empresas, Fundação Gétulio Vargas, Brazil

Carlos Pereira holds a Ph.D. in political science at New School University, New York, and researches public policies and government from a comparative standpoint, political economics of regulatory policy, and political institutions in Latin America. In fall 2017, Professor Pereira taught POLISCI 241B: Comparative Political Economy (Latin America).

Latin American Perspectives Lecturer Moira Fradinger, Yale University Moira Fradinger holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Yale University and researches European and Latin American literature, film, and intellectual history of the 20th century, as well as gender studies and psychoanalysis. In spring 2018, Professor Fradinger taught ILAC 236: Gender and Feminist Debates in Latin America.

LIBRARY REPORT Spanish-language publishing continues to be a print-based industry (75%-80%), and the Stanford Libraries’ research resources reflect this with more than 11,000 new print titles from Latin America this year. As e-books become available they are also included in the libraries’ catalog. Almost 500 e-book titles from Mexico’s Fondo de Cultura Económica are now available to Stanford’s scholars with additional video streaming from the Docuseek2 platform in Stanford Libraries’ SearchWorks catalog.

The use of digital bookplates is now fully implemented in the libraries’ book catalog. A simple search for specific endowed book funds can yield a list of items acquired with (and bearing the digital bookplate of) those special accounts, such as the Kittle Book Fund (contemporary Mexican socio-political issues) or the Jackmand Book Fund (pre-Columbian materials).

Adan Griego, Stanford Libraries Curator for Latin American, Iberian & Mexican American Collections, participated in multiple book fairs during the 2017-2018 year, including a presentation on Spanish-language library acquisitions in the United States at LIBER-Madrid, with a similar moderating panel at the Guadalajara International Book Fair noted in the Publishing Perspectives website. Adan also attended the Latin American Studies Librarians-SALALM conference, which took place in Mexico City during the country’s presidential election, providing an excellent opportunity to gather political ephemera to document that historic event. (See images.) A similar project for a digital archive of the major candidate’s websites is forthcoming. New this year was Adan’s participation in CLAS’s week-long summer teacher institute on the Mexican Revolution held in Mexico City (see Public Engagement section), where he orientated teachers to site visits and provided recommendations on books and media to supplement their course curricula.

Some of the library’s extensive and unique holdings of Mexican artist books were showcased at an exhibit held at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art: Libros de Artista: Artist’s Books from Mexico and the Mexican Diaspora; a catalog of the exhibit will be published in early 2019.

Finally, library outreach to external groups has included organized visits to the libraries’ Special Collections from Cabrillo College, Cypress College, and City College of San Francisco students and faculty, with an additional presentation to high school teachers on how to integrate library resources into their Spanish-language curriculum.

Student-Led Working Group Grants Student working groups collaborate with a faculty sponsor to organize events such as lectures, speaker series, symposia, collaborative research efforts, and the exchange of working papers. CLAS awarded grants to the following student-led working groups during the 2017-2018 academic year:

Indigenous Languages and Cultures: Piyali Community Nahuatl Class This working group provided weekly Saturday Nahuatl language and culture classes to the general public throughout the 2018 winter and spring quarters. These classes, taught by CLAS M.A. student Yongjian Si, were held at CLAS and consistently drew a group of 10-12 community members and students.

Latin American Working Group (LAWG) LAWG focused its eight events throughout the 2018 winter and spring quarters on the collaborative development of research questions and analysis grounded in Latin America as a concept and as a region, constituted as it is by a particular set of historical legacies arising from slavery and colonialism. These events bridged disciplines by seeking shared lines of theoretical engagement in a discussion-based forum.

Faculty-Led Events Grants

The SIRGLAS working group provided a forum for graduate students working on Latin America to share their research with one another during the 2017-2018 academic year. The nine SIRGLAS meetings throughout the year allowed students to present their original research, encouraging interdisciplinary research on Latin America by connecting students from across campus.

US-MEX FoCUS Summit Working Group FoCUS is a student-led initiative dedicated to promoting positive U.S.-Mexico relations by interring communication and mutual understanding while bringing together the future leaders of the U.S. and Mexico. Heritage Spanish Teachers Seminars This year-round professional development course is tailored to the pedagogical needs of the Heritage Spanish classroom in secondary education. The 2017-2018 course featured scholars Alberto DíazCayeros, Ramón González, and Adán Griego, Stanford University; Claudia Leal, Universidad de los Andes, Colombia; and Ruby Ramírez, San Jose State University. It was led by Stanford World Language Project instructors Eduardo Muñoz, Antonio Tunzi, and Yolanda Mercado.

Indigenous Languages of Latin America Workshops

Library Access Grant

CLAS offers semi-annual workshops for instructors of indigenous languages of Latin America from universities across the U.S. and Mexico to discuss curriculum design, pedagogy, and the use of technology in the indigenous language classroom. CLAS-Stanford Libraries Access Grants provide library access and travel funding for faculty from minority serving institutions and community colleges across the U.S. to conduct research using Stanford University Libraries.

Education Partnership for Internationalizing Curriculum (EPIC) EPIC offers an annual series of outreach programs focused on strengthening the internationalization of curricula at community colleges and K-12 institutions. EPIC is a partnership comprised of SGS Area Centers, CESTA, CSET, SPICE, The College of San Mateo, Foothill College, De Anza College, and Las Positas College. In 2017-2018, EPIC welcomed ten community college fellows and offered two three-day courses, three workshops, and a culminating symposium.

In summer 2018, CLAS led the “History of the Americas: Mexican Revolution & Nation-Building” institute abroad in Mexico City, Mexico, for secondary-education and community college history and social science instructors, featuring Colegio de México scholars Javier Garciadiego, Romana Falcón, Graciela Márquez, and Renato González Mello, and Stanford instructional coach Nicole Elliott.

ALUMNI UPDATE Makaela Anderson (M.A. ’14) After 3 years at UC San Diego Extension’s English Language Institute, Makaela has been awarded a fellowship through the U.S. State Department as the English Language Fellow in Niger. She will be working with the U.S. Embassy in the capital city, Niamey, for this one-year appointment.

Judith L. Barret (M.A. ’59) moved to Madrid in 1964 and lived there until 1978, founding a school for children with learning difficulties. She then moved to Hong Kong and founded and built a school for France. Judith now lives in France and is retired.

James Bennett (M.A. ’12) is a third-year law student at USC. While planning to work in commercial litigation, James has also been fortunate to continue Latin American Studies through researching the legal history of slavery, comparing legal slave regimes throughout the Americas for Professor Ariela Gross.

This semester, James is Professor Gross’ teaching assistant for the undergraduate course Law, Slavery, and Race, which has a substantial Latin American focus. Saudades 2011-12 cohort!

Amy Brooks Gottesfeld (M.A. ’01) serves as Supervisor of Secondary Multilingual Programs for San Francisco Unified School District’s Multilingual Pathways Department. The Multilingual Pathways Department supports school sites to provide English Learners with a culturally and linguistically relevant education by engaging educators in quality professional development that empowers them to serve the educational needs of linguistically diverse student populations. As this department is always interested in engaging with researchers and advocates for bilingualism and biliteracy, Amy recommends that CLAS alumni reach out to her for information on job and volunteer opportunities in San Francisco’s public schools.

Karen Camacho (M.A. ’17) transitioned from John Gardner Public Service Fellow to organizing coordinator at the ACLU of Northern California.

Sara Clemente Vásquez (M.A. ’18) After some months of travel, Sara returned to Bolivar House as the events and communications officer.

Mariana de Heredia (M.A. ’11) received a Ph.D. in Iberian and Latin American Cultures from Stanford University in 2018.

Gustavo Empinotti (M.A. ’17) Since graduation, Gustavo has started working full time at the education NGO for which he has volunteered since his Stanford days, Mapa Educação (www. facebook.com/mapaeducacao). Mapa Educação is an education advocacy organization that trains youth in all states of Brazil to impact education policy locally. Gustavo is currently living in São Paulo.

Amelia Farber (M.A. ’16) After two years working as first a marketing executive, regional manager, and then director of sales for Latin America at cyber security company Darktrace, Amelia switched industries and now works with another AI company in the Bay Area called Conversica. At Darktrace, Amelia was able to utilize Spanish on a daily basis (and picked up a bit of Portuguese) while directing sales teams and partners across Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Chile, Peru, and Brazil. At Conversica, a conversational AI company, Amelia gets to keep up Spanish through co-work with Conversica’s Chile-based team brought on through a recent acquisition.

Megan Goulding (M.A. ’13) recently moved from a private practice law firm (Herbert Smith Freehills) to work for the U.K. charity Liberty. Liberty is a human rights campaigning organization, and Megan is one of its lawyers, specializing in privacy, technology, and human rights and running Liberty’s litigation in this area (e.g. surveillance, police technology, etc.).

Merlin Greuel (Minor ’12) has been a medical student at Heidelberg University (Germany) since 2014.

Ryan Kertis (M.A. ’18) is currently working as a Regional Security Assistance Officer with the United States Southern Command. Ryan coordinates programs between the United States and Partner Nations in Central America.

Marie Lefebvre (M.A. ’17) wrapped up a Fulbright grant in Mexico City in June 2017 and now works at Pinkerton for a tech-based client in the SF Bay Area.

Veriene Melo (M.A. ’12) concluded a Ph.D. in Education from UCLA in March 2018. Upon a stay of almost two years at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam both as a visiting student and researcher, she has recently taken up a general position with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. Veriene has remained an active research collaborator with the Poverty, Violence and Governance Lab (PovGov) led by Professor Beatriz Magaloni since graduating from CLAS in 2012.

Araceli Ortíz (M.A. ’08) recently changed careers into K-12 education through the Broad Residency and is working for Chicago Public Schools, a district of which she is an alum!

Hayden Rodarte (M.A. ’14) is currently spending year three of Yale Law School as a visiting student at Stanford Law School.

CLAS WELCOMES THE CLASS OF 2019 Rick Solway (M.A. ’83) reports that he is getting to be a few years from retirement but still doing some work related to Latin America and still very interested in the region. The education he received in 1983 from CLAS has proved to be not only super interesting but also super helpful over the years.

Alix Van Zandt (M.A. ’14) After two years training teachers, running professional development, and designing the curriculum for Estrella del Mar’s Colegio Impacto, a school she jointly opened in January 2017 for rural, indigenous girls in Guatemala, Alix moved back to Antigua in September to direct the education programs branch of an organization called T2T Global. T2T Global focuses on connecting experienced STEM educators with teachers in rural contexts in order to expand access to quality education by training and empowering teacher leaders to improve teaching methods. In July, Alix celebrated four years in Guatemala, where she has been since graduating from CLAS.
