Queen Emma’s Legacy Queen Emma Kaleleonālani’s foresight and understanding that Hawaiian girls needed to have access to a high-quality education was the underlying base for the development of St. Andrew’s Priory School for Girls.

Since the founding of The Priory 150 years ago, St. Andrew’s Schools has grown to include a Boy’s School (The Prep) and a Preschool (Queen Emma Preschool).

Today, St. Andrew’s Schools honors Queen Emma’s legacy by teaching and perpetuating her values of Aloha, Pono, ‘Imi Na‘auao, Ho‘omanawanui, Mālama, and Lokomaika‘i, which are woven into our school traditions and educational curriculum.

Dear Friends, As we look back on the past year we are reminded that your commitment to St. Andrew’s Schools is both generous and inspirational. Your dedication allows us to provide the treasured gift of a quality education for our children. This year we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of our founding and we take great pride in honoring our past, celebrating our present, and aspiring toward our future.

Since opening the St. Andrew’s Priory School for Girls in 1867, we have grown to include The Prep for boys and Queen Emma Preschool. By extending access to young boys we have expanded our reach and become the first and only coordinate school in Hawai‘i personalizing education for both boys and girls.

Our single-gender K-12 educational model actively engages and educates students in a culture of care, love and service, fulfilling the timeless vision of our founder, Queen Emma. In this special

place, every child is known, challenged, understood, and empowered to strive for the highest, or Kūlia I Ka Nu‘u. By giving, you inspire and call us to strive for the highest each and every day.

In this inaugural issue of Ke Ali‘i ‘Emalani, St. Andrew’s Schools Annual Giving Report, we celebrate your commitment and love for the school by sharing some of the storied history of some of our donors. Highlights include the legacy and leadership of Mr. John Jubinsky, our deep relationship with the Castle Foundation, and the long-standing scholarship support from the Gedge Family.

A Lasting L egacy J

John“Jube”Jubinsky

ohn “Jube” Jubinsky was born in northeastern Pennsylvania, the youngest son of Michael and Anna, a coal miner and housewife.

After obtaining a B.A. in mathematics from Colby College in Maine and his J.D. from University of Chicago Law School, he followed his best friend to Hawai‘i where, after a brief stint in the army, was admitted to the Hawai‘i Bar in 1959, the year of Hawai‘i’s statehood. From 1960 to 1990, John practiced law at Ashford & Wriston, where he rose to partner.

He then became a sole practitioner and Senior General Counsel for Title Guaranty.

As the “Dean” of real estate law in Hawai‘i, John was widely respected by his colleagues for his mastery of legal principles, practical judgment, fairness and creativity in solving complex transactional problems. Many lawyers have openly marveled at John’s ability to cut through to the heart of an issue and cause differences of opinion to disappear. In 2009, Honolulu Magazine recognized John as “Lawyer of the Year,” and in 2014 included him on the “Best Lawyers in Hawai‘i List.”

An avid golfer, wine lover, foodie, history buff, philanthropist, champion of education, and mentor to many, “Jube,” as his family and friends called him, relished the game of life, was admired for his intellect, and had a fierce love for and loyalty to his loved ones.

John passed away on August 4, 2017, while surrounded by his family. He is survived by Teresita, his wife of 50 years, children Ruben and Melissa and spouses, and two grandchildren.

In 2016, St. Andrew’s Schools honored John at the Queen Emma Ball, along with good friend Judy Pietsch, for his inspirational leadership, dedication, and service as an active member of the Board of Trustees for over 38 years.

When asked what inspired him to contribute significant time and support to St. Andrew’s Schools for almost four decades, John said “I believe in education and I believe in giving back,” which was the hallmark of his immense and immeasurable impact on our school.

John was on the Board of Trustees at St. Andrew’s Schools since 1979.

During those years, John worked with seven heads of school and several diocese bishops. He saw the school mature, grow, and innovate over the years and was a leader in the school’s most significant milestones, including recruiting countless trustees, raising money to build the gym, purchasing land, and adding Queen Emma Preschool to St. Andrew’s Schools.

He also persuaded then Supreme Court Justice Anthony Scalia to visit juniors and seniors at The Priory to provide mentorship and guidance in their career paths and decisions. Most recently, he facilitated a decade long goal to finalize the purchase of the school’s entry road and secure a 50-year lease for the park at Queen Emma Square.

John served as Chair of the Board of Trustees during the time that Father David Kennedy served as Head of School (1981 – 1995) at St. Andrew’s Priory. Father Kennedy shared,

“John was my ‘rock,’ sensible counselor, and dear friend. His death is a great loss to me personally, to everyone who knew him, and of course to the St. Andrew’s Schools.”

Judy Pietsch said at John’s service, “Every trustee who served on the Board, knew that Jube was ‘all in.’ … Jube’s high standards, meant that his school had to be academically rigorous, but he also

loved the school’s small size, and caring personal attention. He witnessed these qualities when his daughter Melissa attended The Priory. In many ways, St. Andrew’s Schools fits his simple roots, his small town background and his experience as a scholarship student and scholar-athlete at Colby College.”

John’s lasting legacy will continue through the naming of Jubinsky Hall, where today’s St. Andrew’s Prep students learn and play. In February 2014, John’s friends raised nearly $400,000 and surprised him with naming the building after him on his 80th birthday. This building honors John’s legacy of loyalty, leadership and vision as an exemplary trustee.

John was also a long-time donor through his named fund, the “John Jubinsky Scholar Athlete Endowed Scholarship.”

For over 17 years, the scholarship has supported several students each year; awarding their accomplishments for high academic performance and athletic pursuits. Most recently, three-year recipient Jordan Jones eloquently spoke at John’s memorial service and students dedicated a beautiful hula and mele to him.

Phoebe Furtado Gedge and George Donald Gedge Endowed Scholarship Fund 20-year Legacy of the Gift of Education

Over the past 20 years, The Phoebe Furtado Gedge and George Donald Gedge Endowed Scholarship Fund has provided over $490,000 in 95 scholarships to promising upper school scholar-athletes of Native Hawaiian ancestry. Through these scholarships, the Gedge ‘Ohana continues to transform the lives of St. Andrew’s students and their families for many years to come.

This scholarship is very special to St. Andrew’s Schools, beginning with its founding on May 18, 1997, as The Phoebe Furtado Gedge Memorial Fund in memory of Priory alumna, Phoebe Furtado Gedge, Class of 1934. After Phoebe passed away

Phoebe Furtado Gedge was a graduate of St. Andrew’s Priory School for Girls, Class of 1934. Due to her parents’ recognition of the importance of a good education and Phoebe’s academic talents, Phoebe came to the Priory at the early age of 12 as a boarder from Lahaina, Maui. Phoebe excelled at St. Andrew’s Priory and skipped two grade levels upon entry!

After graduation, Phoebe obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and went onto graduate school to earn her Masters of Education at Columbia University. Her love of education and natural athletic ability led her to a career as a physical

parent and a grandparent, Phoebe always instilled the importance of strong values and education as goals to meet and accomplish in life.

In a letter from Don Gedge, he said, “We wish for our student recipients to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them at The Priory, and that they will enjoy themselves along the way. …

Phoebe was a great planner…. She was strongly self-disciplined, established goals and worked very diligently to achieve them. … If she was meeting with you today, she would say, ‘Know what you want to do, work hard to reach your goals, be reliable so that others know they can depend on you.’”

In January 2013, at the age of 97 years, George Donald “Don” Gedge passed away, and the Gedge daughters changed the name of the scholarship to what it is today - The Phoebe Furtado Gedge and George Donald Gedge Scholarship Fund - so that the legacy of both parents could be honored.

Since then, the scholarship has provided financial support to several students and their families for all high school years at the Priory, allowing them to graduate and continue to matriculate to four-year colleges, and enjoy professional careers.

The Episcopal Diocese of Hawai‘i The Episcopal Diocese of Hawai‘i has made several generous gifts to St. Andrew’s Schools Scholarship and Financial Aid Program in honor of the school’s 150th Anniversary. Mahalo to The Episcopal Diocese of Hawai‘i for supporting students at St. Andrew’s Schools!

The following are student scholarships from The Episcopal Diocese of Hawai‘i and its community members:

The Bishop’s Award is sponsored by the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai‘i and is a symbol of the close relationship between the Bishop, the Church, and St. Andrew’s Schools. It is given to the student who best exemplifies her religious faith, witness, and values in her life and relationships.

The name of the Bishop’s Award winner is engraved on the perpetual plaque that remains at The Priory.

Norma Chun and Reverend Canon Franklin Chun Scholarship is awarded annually to the student or students who best represent the Chuns’ respective schools, either St. Andrew’s Priory or Roosevelt High School, with dignity, pride and respect and consideration for all. Father Chun is a beloved former chaplain of The Priory and his wife is an alumna.

Amelia G. Gaston Scholarship Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation provides scholarships for needy and deserving students to enable them to attend St. Andrew’s Schools, with preference given to children of Episcopal clergy.

‘Iolani Guild provides scholarships to high school students at St. Andrew’s Schools who are Episcopalian, of part-Polynesian descent, are in good academic standing, have financial need, and are involved in extra-curricular activities.

The Joyce Kim Scholarship Fund is given to St. Andrew’s Schools by St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and Michael Kim in memory of his late wife, Joyce Kim. The scholarship is given to a Korean student at St. Andrew’s Schools who best exemplified the values and academic accomplishments that Joyce held.

The Father Fred Minuth Memorial Scholar Athlete Award was instituted to honor The Reverend Fred Minuth who became the first Headmaster of St. Andrew’s Priory upon the departure of the Sisters of the Transfiguration in 1969.

Father Minuth was an Episcopal minister and also a physics teacher, scientist, and an athletic coach. This scholarship, which recognizes a person who blends talents in both the academic and athletic realms with good sportsmanship and leadership, is held in memory of Father Minuth.

Committed Advocates for Early Childhood Education

F

or over 27 years, the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation has been a great friend and loyal supporter of St. Andrew’s Schools. First as lead donors to the gymnasium capital campaign in 1990, and now for capital improvements to the Queen Emma Preschool, the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation has long partnered with St. Andrew’s Schools in fulfilling the Foundation’s mission to improve the lives of Hawaii’s children and families by improving the quality and quantity of early education.

Thanks to a generous gift of $55,000 in 2016-17 from the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation, the Queen Emma Preschool successfully completed a full kitchen renovation and a partial bathroom upgrade, which accommodates the high-volume usage and production of healthy daily meals for 140 preschool children and 24 faculty and staff.

Queen Emma Preschool, located in lush Nu’uanu, has long provided preschool children with a high-quality, developmentally appropriate curriculum in a safe and nurturing environment.

Queen Emma and Her Friends Samuel N. and Mary Castle: A Lasting Philanthropic Partnership

By Al Castle, Executive Director, The Samuel N. & Mary Castle Foundation Historians of Hawai‘i’s complex past have recently begun to study the partnership of ali’i leaders and missionary or missionary-affiliated in partnering on creating lasting civic organizations and institutions. One such philanthropic alliance was that of the revered Queen Emma (1836-1885),

philanthropy still impact our state today.

In addition, ali’i women in the 19th century played a key role in making charitable decisions for their families while actively networking with women associated with the Mission as well as Western

Reflections “Aunty Ku‘ulei,” as she was known at the Priory, was Kumu Hula with Aunty Leina‘ala Kalama Heine in the early 1990s through 1999. She loved The Priory and devoted much of her time to the school. She extended her Halau to St. Andrew’s and taught hundreds of students there while traveling back and forth from Kaua‘i. Together with Kumu Hula Leina‘ala, they worked together to bring back hula to the school and resurrected the tradition of the May Day program. “Aunty Ku‘ulei loved doing the May Day program and she was committed to creating a May Day program that encompassed the Hawaiian tradition for Queen Emma,” said Faye Yamasaki, then 1st grade teacher and today’s school librarian.

Tupu Savaiigaea ’98, who was in Aunty Ku‘ulei’s Halau from 7th -12th grade, said, “Both Aunty Ku‘ulei and Aunty ‘Ala were instrumental in my hula journey. I learned to dance strictly for the ‘love’ of hula under Aunty Ku‘ulei. Aunty ‘Ala prepared me for competition and gave me more insight on the ‘Olapa’ part of Halau. Both prepared me for my later years when I competed in Merrie Monarch and traveled to Japan to dance.

“Much opportunity and growth was provided to me while at the Priory. At the end of my 8th grade year, there was a possibility that my parents would not be able to send me to the Priory. But just before the summer, Father Kennedy, who was the Headmaster at the time, called my parents and told them I was selected to be a Weinberg Scholar and to reenroll for next year! I later found out that it was Kumu Ku‘ulei who advised Father Kennedy that ‘Tupu isn’t someone Priory should lose.’ It turned into the biggest blessing to complete high school at the Priory.

My great grandparents led very humble lives in the late 1800’s, and their children’s education was of the upmost importance to them.

Being of very humble birth in the late 1800’s, their children’s education was of the upmost importance to them. They sacrificed much and worked hard to put all six of their children through private schools. Two of their daughters graduated from St. Andrew’s Priory School for Girls. Three of their granddaughters also graduated from The Priory; one returned to teach there. I am blessed to be a Priory graduate (Class of ’66) and of their third generation of descendants. Presently, their fifth generation descendant is enrolled at The Priory. She’s their great, great, great granddaughter.

My great grandparents chose St. Andrew’s Priory School because of its high educational standards, and establishing this scholarship fund is a way to not only honor my family, but to assist girls of Native Hawaiian ancestry to maximize their potential and life goals.

Though she lived in Northern California, she came back for every class reunion for The Priory Class of ’81. When the girls gathered, it always felt as if they had never been apart.

“We have all grown together, laughed together and now we cry together. But our memories with Dawn will forever be in our hearts,” said a classmate.

At St. Andrew’s Schools, we are most proud of our students, who are intensely curious about the world around them, passionate about global issues that affect humanity, and committed to using their knowledge and skills to create a world that is peaceful and just.

This global awareness in our students is in large part thanks to the generous support given to St. Andrew’s Schools by the Stephen E. and Isabella H. Stevens World Peace Foundation.

The foundation’s mission to “promote peace through education, awareness, and advocacy, starting with Hawaii’s youth” is fully aligned with the St. Andrew’s School’s mission and vision.

In partnership with the Stevens World Peace Foundation, St. Andrew’s Schools has developed a robust global leadership program that cultivates the character and will in our students to investigate the world beyond their immediate environment and deeply engage in significant global issues that affect peace.

In 2011, the Stevens World Peace Foundation started work with St. Andrew’s Schools to encourage students to become involved in global issues through the Model United Nations program. In participating in Model United Nations simulations and conferences, students learn to take action through networking, collaboration, negotiation, compromise, and seeing themselves as positive, powerful agents for peace (locally, regionally, and/or globally).

In 2015, with the help of the Stevens World Peace Foundation, St. Andrew’s was able to expand its curriculum, projects, activities and educational travel opportunities to formalize the Dr. Stephen E. and Isabella H. Stevens Institute for Global Leadership Program.

Stevens Global Leadership students have the opportunity to earn the prestigious Distinction in Global Leadership by engaging in rigorous coursework, leadership and philanthropic activities that fulfill the Stevens Global Leadership Learning Outcomes. Today, 16% of our high school students and 15% of the class of 2018 are on track to graduate with Distinction in Global Leadership.

In this program, students practice how to communicate and engage with audiences of diverse backgrounds, recognize and overcome linguistic, ideological, cultural, and geographic barriers. They also learn to recognize, articulate and explain multiple perspectives while becoming aware and respectful of how religious, cultural, geopolitical and historical backgrounds shape individual viewpoints. They learn how to construct and articulate their own unique perspectives about how the world

works based upon sustained inquiry of global issues that affect peace.

During the 2016-2017 school year, students traveled to Cambodia, where they studied the rich cultural and historical heritage. They learned about the country’s tragic political history and the devastating impact on the Cambodian people - opening their eyes to the issues of global poverty and inequality. In Cambodia, the students worked with Sustainable Schools International, an NGO that serves the children of Cambodia by providing resources for children and their families to be able to obtain a solid education.

One student reflected, “The world feels both smaller and bigger. I experienced so many new things, but also realized just how much we are all alike. We all have the same problems with only ethnicity, language, and thousands of miles separating us. I wish there was an easier way for everyone to come together to solve these frequent problems: poverty, human trafficking, education, etc. However, I believe that my generation will be making changes in the global spectrum.”

During the 2016-2017 school year, our students had the opportunity to participate in Aloha ‘Aina camp, a nature immersion camp on Hawai‘i Island’s Hue Hue Ranch. This program is designed to reconnect people to nature and contemplate a vision of a world that we would want to live in through the exploration of permaculture principles of gardening, storytelling around the fire, nature hikes, daily meditation, and gratitude practices. One student reflected, “If people aren’t aware and continue to just wreck the nature that we were given, our world will come to ruin. I don’t want this to happen, and I would like to see more people attaining this knowledge.”

As a testament to the program, many students are active in Global Girls projects, which empower them to make a difference in our local community by connecting with local nonprofits, legislators, and social justice activists.

Catherine Mount (c/o 2020), who is on-track to graduate with a Distinction in Global Leadership, worked with the Sierra Club to research and create materials that will raise awareness about the Red Hill fuel leakage issue as part of her Global Girls-Global Action class.

She attended community hearings, researched legislation introduced in the State Senate to bring the underground tanks up to standard, and presented her findings at the Hawai’i Global Issues Network Conference, a conference for youth who are passionate about taking

action in the local community to make the world a better place.

Aliyah Abanes (c/o 2018) has been active in our Model UN class for all of her high school years, and she has grown in her capacities to analyze global issues that threaten peace, lead negotiations, propose and sponsor resolutions designed to promote peace, and serve as committee chair. She has earned the coveted title of Best Delegate at several simulations and conferences.

In the long term, the Pillars of Peace Hawai’i effort aims to be a catalyst for understanding more about the roles of compassion, diversity, and culture in the practice of peace; to encourage our community to engage in acts of peace and aloha in our daily lives; and to grow ethical and compassionate leaders for Hawai‘i’s future. The work the St. Andrew’s Schools team is doing will help us reach these goals.

Please tell us why St. Andrew’s Schools was selected as one of the participating schools for the Pillars of Peace Hawai‘i Fund.

The interest in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) education seems to be growing. Why do you think that is?

Two things stood out in the application submitted by St. Andrew’s Schools for the SEL grant. One was that all faculty and staff were to be trained in social and emotional literacy using an evidencebased and recognized SEL program called RULER. The program was not just focused on the students but also on the adults at the school. Second, the proposal included a clear plan to assess the program and measure progress and impact.

SEL is not new – it has been around in various forms for many years. But in today’s environment with technology, new stressors, and many competing demands, it seems to be needed even more than before. Additionally, SEL seems to have been implemented long enough now that the research is strong enough and reliable enough to demonstrate both immediate impacts as well as long-term benefits for students into their adult lives.

What do you hope your organization will achieve in the near future? In the long term?

In fact, a new study that “looked at a more than 20-year-old program designed to build social and emotional skills in young children found a surprising outcome: Participants had a higher likelihood of voting later in life.”

A meta-analysis on SEL also showed an 11% gain in academic performance, along with the decreases in negative behaviors and increases in pro-social behaviors that might have been expected.

As the team continues to build on their SEL efforts, I hope they will be able to find a strong balance across their various programs to have the most positive impact possible for their students. As with all of the schools in the cohort, I hope they are able to embed SEL into their school programming so

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing education today?

I think education faces many challenges today – one is just keeping up with the rapidly changing world given technological gains. Another is dealing with so many young people exposed to a variety of trauma – some very acute trauma – in their lives and the impact this has on their behavior and ability to learn.

Educators are not just faced with educating young people. They must deal with their students’ social and emotional well-being before they can begin to address their academic needs.

My mother is a retired elementary school teacher and many of my family members have had careers in education. Educators are expected to do so much more today while facing so many more challenges.

HCF’s hope is that by supporting SEL programs in our schools, we are helping educators manage these challenges to give our young people the best chance for a successful future.

What would you say are some of the Hawaii Community Foundation’s strongest beliefs and dreams about education?

If you believe that people are basically good and capable, and we do, then education helps to empower people and provide the opportunities needed for each of us to accomplish wonderful things, to help make our society healthier, to help build a better place for us all.

St. Andrew’s Schools raised more than $800,000 at the 2017 Queen Emma Ball – 150th Anniversary Celebration held on Friday, May 26, 2017 – the largest amount ever raised at the Queen Emma Ball in the school’s history!

The monumental gala kicked off a season of celebration for St. Andrew’s Schools’ 150th anniversary, commemorating the schools’ many years of actively engaging and educating students in a culture of care, love, and service.

“For the past 150 years we have been educating children to thrive by nurturing their unique skills and talents to become meaningful contributors to our community and society,” said Dr. Ruth R. Fletcher, head of school at St. Andrew’s Schools. “We are proud to honor our founder, Queen Emma Kāleleonālani, who was an extraordinary visionary of her time. Together with her husband, Kamehameha IV, she was an ali‘i who created significantly impactful legacies in education, health and spirituality that are pillars in our society today. We thank our fantastic alumnae and the community for their outpouring of support and aloha and look forward to many more years of helping children learn and grow to be their personal best.”

Over 480 guests gathered under the stars on the school’s campus in the heart of downtown Honolulu to enjoy performances by extraordinary talented St. Andrew’s students and delicious farm-to-table cuisine by Chef Mark Noguchi. Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa flew in from Washington, D.C. especially for the event and addressed the crowd with her inspiring thoughts on what it means to be a graduate of The Priory, and like all St. Andrew’s students, a perpetuation of Queen Emma’s legacy.

During the event’s Ignite the Mission 150th Matching Gifts Campaign, the gala made its goal of raising an additional $150,000 to match a gift of $150,000 given to the school in honor of its 150th anniversary, resulting in $300,000 raised to continuing its success and the legacy of Queen Emma with a new campus master plan!

The campus master plan, debuting in fall 2018, will re-imagine its learning environments and actively create spaces designed to empower students and set the stage for transformational learning.

2016 Home for the Holidays Raises $20,000 for St. Andrew’s Schools The annual Home for the Holidays event for St. Andrew’s Schools raised $20,000 for the school! Despite the heavy rains, the benefit attracted over 130 guests and school supporters, who came together for a fun evening of shopping at “Made in Hawaii” pop-up boutiques and the handcrafted Festival of Trees.

Head of School Dr. Ruth Fletcher and Priory students greeted guests with holiday caroling and music. Priory and Prep Dads delighted guests by passing an array of specialty cocktails and delicious pupus.

“A big mahalo to all of our very special Angel sponsors and guests for coming out to support our students and our school,” said Dr. Fletcher. “St. Andrew’s is a place where all students are seen, valued and recognized for their unique talents. Your support allows us to continue and build upon the outstanding personalized curriculum we are able to offer our students.”

Queen Emma Kaleleonālani 181st Birthday Celebration

1836 - 1885

On Tuesday, January 24, 2017, St. Andrew’s Schools paid tribute to its school’s founder Queen Emma Kaleleonālani by celebrating her birthday with a series of all-day ceremonies and celebrations of mele and hula.

The day began with a special chapel service in honor of Queen Emma at The Cathedral of St. Andrew, followed by

dynasties. The Priory’s senior and junior classes, community leaders, alumnae representatives, members of the Royal Order of Kamehameha, Hale o na Ali‘i o Hawai‘i, Daughters of Hawai‘i, and the Queen Emma Hawaiian Civic Club, joined together to hear from Kumu Aggy Kusunoki and May Day Queen Keonaona Hapai in the chapel. All guests presented beautiful ho’okupu to Queen Emma at her tomb and joined together in song. Guests

Ascension Day’s Rich Traditions Continue On Ascension Day 2017, the Priory celebrated its 150th anniversary with a chapel service led by The Rt. Rev. Robert L. Fitzpatrick in The Cathedral of St. Andrew. A procession followed as students, faculty, staff, and guests made their way to the beautifully decorated coral cross. Juniors and seniors sang their class songs as parting gifts to each other.

Acknowledgements and presentations were made followed by the singing of the Priory Alma Mater.

The day’s events closed with the Alumnae Pa’ina Lunch in the park at Queen Emma Square. The luncheon began with an ‘oli performed by the Middle School Hui Hau‘oli followed

by Hawaiian fare and fellowship. The centennial class of 1967 as well as the classes of 1957 and 1947 celebrating their 60th and 70th reunions joined us as our guests of honor.

When Ascension Day 2017 came to an end, one hundred alumnae had participated in our celebration, spanning eight decades and twenty-eight class years.

Alumnae Pau Hana • June 1, 2017 Alumnae Pau Hana began in 2015 to offer an opportunity for Priory alumnae to gather and reconnect at an off-campus, after-work get together. Since that first inaugural event, Board Vice Chair Judy Pietsch has continuously offered her exquisite waterfront home as the venue which provided the perfect setting for the event. In that first year, nearly fifty alumnae joined us for fellowship, fun, and food. This year’s 2017 Pau Hana had grown to an attendance of nearly one hundred alumnae!

Head of School Dr. Ruth R. Fletcher and Trustee Judy Pietsch graciously welcomed a festive group of Priory alumnae spanning from the classes of 1949 to 2012. Former headmaster Father David K. Kennedy made his third appearance to the Pau Hana, to the delight of many who were students at the time of his tenure.

So much fun was had at Pau Hana 2017 that it inspired another alumnae-driven event later in the summer that brought over 20 alumnae and teachers back to campus. Mahalo to all who participated in our 2017 alumnae activities!
