Adelaide Cardiology is pleased to welcome to the Practice : Dr Charles Tie MBChB, FRACP

INSIDE

Charles graduated from the University of Otago in 2001 and his internship, general medical and cardiology training were completed at the Dunedin Hospital, New Zealand. He was awarded FRACP (dual training in Cardiology and General Medicine) in 2012 and completed 18 months of Interventional Fellowship at the Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand.

Charles has a special interest in the diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease as well as various aspects of interventional cardiology, including fractional flow reserve, intracoronary Optical Coherence Tomography and Bioresorbable Everolimus Eluting Vascular Scaffold and is planning to further develop his interest in structural heart intervention.

Apart from English, Charles is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese.

Charles will be performing diagnostic and interventional procedures at St Andrew’s Hospital and consulting at the St Andrew’s Medical Centre.

FROM THE CEO I trust you will enjoy reading the Winter edition of our newsletter. The first half of 2015 has been busy, with many exciting things happening at St Andrew’s, and I am thrilled at the progress we continue to make and the positive changes that we deliver to maintain our enviable reputation.

David Livingstone once said “I’ll go anywhere as long as it’s forward” and that very much sums up our ethos.

As a leading private hospital we need to be at the forefront of innovation and technology, and we highlight two exciting examples of that in this edition.

On page 6 we report on our continuing leadership in the use of robotic surgery in South Australia. Thanks to the generosity of leading Adelaide businessman and philanthropist Mr Gordon Pickard, we have been able to purchase a new da Vinci Xi surgical robot – the first in this State and one of only three in Australia.

We’ve also become the first hospital in South Australia to implant a nextgeneration defibrillator in a patient.

You can read about this advancement in our Cardiology services on page 9.

As well as new equipment, we have new people in new roles at the Hospital. In our Executive Update on page 4 we focus on Jacquie Wiley, who has already had a positive impact since stepping up to the key role of Director of Nursing and Clinical Services. On page 7 we introduce our new Workplace Health and Safety Manager, Cos Lamberto, and update our progress towards self-insurance.

Our most important objective is to ensure our patients have a safe and excellent experience in our Hospital.

We have leading-edge systems that measure patient safety and clinical performance and are currently focussing on medication management.

The article on page 5 identifies an important project under way to improve communication between our patients, their GPs and the hospital.

Our feature clinical practice story is on Sach Day Surgery, which offers a comprehensive range of plastic, reconstructive, hand and aesthetic surgical services. We have enjoyed a long and rewarding relationship with Randall Sach and are proud to provide you with details on his practice on page 12.

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of three outstanding supporters of St Andrew’s over the years – The Hon Trevor Griffin LLM, Dr John Maddern and Dr Brian Landers. We acknowledge their contribution on page 14.

In this edition you will also find information about our Foundation, which is now being capably led by our new Foundation Manager, Amy Bredon, and our Foundation Chair, Chris Wright.

I do hope you enjoy reading about what we are doing at St Andrew’s.

EXECUTIVE JACQUIE UPDATE WILEY NEW DIRECTOR OF NURSING AND CLINICAL SERVICES

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Jacquie Wiley as our Director of Nursing and Clinical Services. Jacquie was the standout candidate from a very strong field, which in itself speaks volumes for our reputation. The best people want to work at St Andrew’s.

Jacquie would be known to many of you. She first joined us in 1995 as a Clinical Nurse to assist with the opening of our new Critical Care Unit, bringing with her clinical expertise in Cardiothoracic Recovery, High Dependency and Intensive Care Nursing at a senior level. She holds formal qualifications in Intensive Care Nursing, Mediation and Management and has nearly completed an MBA.

At the same time, her strategic skills ensured she was a vital member of the Theatre Development Master Plan Group and played a pivotal role in the implementation of Cardiothoracic Services. She was clinical lead for the St Andrew’s Medical Centre, with a particular focus on ensuring the Chemotherapy Suite made a smooth transition to the current facility while also expanding its services.

Jacquie quickly moved into senior leadership positions, commencing as the Clinical Manager in the Day Procedure Suite in 2001 then adding Recovery and Anaesthetics to her portfolio in 2008. She was the Assistant Director of Nursing from 2011 until 2014, before becoming Acting Director.

Jacquie is excited by the opportunity to review the current nursing structure and the way care models are delivered.

Her inclusive management style will support the management team as it strives to further enhance our patientcentred approach that provides highquality care and staff satisfaction.

Jacquie’s passion for quality and safety is obvious and she was quickly identified to participate in the risk and resource space, contributing in risk mitigation committees such as Clinical Review, Patient Deterioration, Risk and Quality, and the Anaesthetic Subcommittee, as well as the Medical Committee.

She has also worked to ensure that her commitment to safety, quality and culture is embedded in our Strategic and Operational Plans.

REDUCING MEDICATION RISKS PROJECT PATHWAY St Andrew’s has embarked on an important project, in partnership with Bupa, Adelaide Cardiology, HPS Pharmacies and a number of key stakeholders, to identify ways to reduce the risk of medicine used by patients before, during and after their time at the Hospital. This includes improving communication with GPs. Around the world, medication management is known to present risks to patients in hospital environments and the common use of medicines means they are associated with more errors and adverse events than any

other aspect of healthcare. Knowing how adverse medication events occur and how they can be prevented is important for understanding how we can improve the safety and quality of medicine use, at the level of both individual practice and within systems for managing medicines.

In the first phase of the project we worked with Adelaide Cardiology to identify a group of patients considered to be high risk. Next we started mapping out how we received information about their current medication use and whether we did, in fact, know the “truth”.

It is a complex business because it can be difficult to ensure patients arriving as inpatients bring the correct information. Sometimes the directions on the packets are not accurate or relevant, and GP lists may not reflect current medication administration for a variety of reasons.

Our participation in this project reaffirms our commitment to high quality patient care. We look forward to further developing this project in the months ahead.

DA VINCI XI SURGICAL ROBOT NEW SURGICAL ROBOT HARD AT WORK Friday the 13th was certainly not unlucky for St Andrew’s back in March.

That’s the day we welcomed our new $3.3 million da Vinci Xi Surgical Robot – one of only three in Australia.

Mr Peter Sutherland, one of our eminent urologists, used it for a surgical procedure just five days later.

The purchase of the new equipment – which replaces an earlier model installed in 2013 – was made possible by a very generous donation from leading Adelaide businessman and philanthropist Mr Gordon Pickard.

South Australia’s Health Minister, Mr Jack Snelling, spoke for all associated with St Andrew’s when he warmly thanked Mr Pickard for his contribution and support.

Our surgeons have wide experience in robotic surgery and are supported by a highly skilled nursing team. In the past year, we have treated over 400 patients with around 140 public patients and expect this number will be maintained.

Robotic equipment is predominantly used in urology, ear nose and throat and gynaecological surgery, particularly for the treatment of cancers. We are looking to commence some colorectal work in the near future.

Mr Snelling also made a point of saying that the Government looked forward to working with St Andrew’s into the future for the benefit of public patients.

“This has been a very successful partnership between the State Government and a private partner,” he said. “We are pleased to keep that continuing, particularly with the expanded range of treatments the machine can offer”.

The benefits to patients in using robotic surgery, rather than either open surgery or conventional laparoscopic (“keyhole”) surgery, are significant. It is a minimally invasive procedure, with less pain, reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time.

The new Xi robot has overhead instrument arm architecture designed to facilitate anatomical access from virtually any position; the longer instrumentation provides greater surgical reach for the surgeon.

Each instrument is designed with seven degrees of motion – more than the human wrist. This technology also allows each individual surgeon’s hand movements to be scaled, filtered and translated into precise movements of the instruments that are working inside the patient’s body.

The Hospital continues to make workplace health and safety a priority focus for all managers and workers.

At the beginning of April we welcomed Cos Lamberto to the new role of Workplace Health and Safety Manager.

Cos joined us from Elderly Citizen’s Housing (ECH) Inc, where he was the Rehabilitation and Safety Manager for 11 years. He brings a wealth of knowledge and practical expertise in workplace health and safety and claims management to the Hospital and we are benefiting from having a fresh and experienced set of eyes to look at our systems and processes.

Prior to his role at ECH, Cos managed the injury management and rehabilitation systems for a number of entities within SA Health, including the RAH, Modbury Hospital and RDNS. A number of work programs focused on strengthening and continuing to improve the Hospital’s work health and safety and injury management systems and processes are gathering momentum. Priority activities currently under way include reviewing and updating the Hospital’s work health and safety, return to work and injury management policies and procedures as well as developing a comprehensive

WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY UPDATE WHS training plan for managers and staff.

In March St Andrew’s submitted a successful application to Employers Mutual for grant funding to progress three key WHS projects, including undertaking a comprehensive health and safety training needs analysis and developing skills in Job Safety Analysis (JSA). We have engaged Lawson Risk Management Services to assist us with the delivery of these projects before the end of the financial year and help ensure we continue to build our health and safety culture across the Hospital.

AT ST ANDREW’S ST ANDREW’S PIONEERS CARDIAC TECHNOLOGY

On March 18 a next-generation heart defibrillator was implanted in a South Australian patient for the very first time here at St Andrew’s Hospital.

A/Prof Glenn Young, a Partner at Adelaide Cardiology and a member of the Centre for Heart Rhythm Disorders at the University of Adelaide, was the Cardiologist – and he hailed the new technology as a ‘major breakthrough’.

Defibrillators are designed to deliver an electric shock to the heart in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest or extremely rapid heartbeat.

Unlike standard defibrillators, which require insulated wires or leads to be inserted directly into the heart, the new sub-cutaneous implantable defibrillator (S-ICD) is implanted under the skin, with the generator at the side of the chest and the electrode beside the breastbone. This significantly reduces potential complications such as infection and damage to veins.

“The new technology means leads no longer go into the circulatory system, so they are not subject to the same repetitive stresses and last longer,” A/Prof Young said.

“Inserting leads inside blood vessels and into the heart can cause problems such as potential infection and scarring to blood vessels, while long term the repetitive stresses placed on the leads inside the heart can cause them to fracture.”

St Andrew’s is proud to have pioneered this new technology in South Australia. CEO Stephen Walker said “the new technology will result in significantly improved patient outcomes for our cardiac patients and reflects our excellent relationship with Adelaide Cardiology”.

OUR NEW FOUNDATION MANAGER I was delighted to take up my new role at St Andrew’s Hospital Foundation in February and can scarcely believe I have been here for over three months already. It has been a busy time working with the Foundation team to plan the year ahead.

My experience in the not-for-profit sector has been an exciting journey, primarily during my time at the Julian Burton Burns Trust. I assisted in establishing the Trust in 2005 and worked for a number of years with an enthusiastic team in a variety of roles.

Immediately prior, I was employed at the Royal Adelaide Hospital Research Fund. I am pleased to find myself amongst the excitement of a hospital once again at St Andrew’s.

SALA EXHIBITION – BODY, LIGHT AND SOUL

St Andrew’s is delighted to again be hosting a SALA exhibition this year. Body, Light and Soul will run across the weekend of 7-9 August, opening on the Friday night.

To be held in the glorious surrounds of historic Waverley House, the exhibition will celebrate the work of plastic surgeon and glass blower Randall Sach, photographer Pippy Mount and winemaker and ENT specialist John Tomich.

Randall will be exhibiting abstracted human forms, sculptured from hot glass, while Pippy will display a mesmerising collection of abstract pieces first captured during a trip to Las Vegas. John will take us on a journey of the senses, exploring the relationship between winemaking, science and art. On opening night, guests will also be able to sample some wonderful Tomich Wines.

NEIGHBOUR DAY AT ST ANDREW’S HOSPITAL

We very much enjoy engaging with our community so we were very pleased to be asked by local residents to be involved in National Neighbour Day celebrations (supported by Adelaide City Council).

On Sunday 29 March, local residents enjoyed the morning tea celebration in the tranquil grounds of Waverley House and community garden. We were delighted to open the coffee shop early on the day to provide morning coffee and tea.

CHARITY LEGEND’S CONCERT

A Legend’s Concert was held at Mundullah Oval on Saturday March 21. The event was attended by more than 400 people and they raised in excess of $20,000 (one third of the proceeds went to St Andrew’s).

MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH SACH DAY SURGERY AND ST ANDREW’S HOSPITAL TEAM UP

St Andrew’s prides itself on offering high-level care across a number of disciplines, even in the most complicated of cases. We are greatly assisted in achieving this by our association with leading specialists and medical professionals, many of whom are colocated on site.

Sach Day Surgery is a fully accredited private Day Surgery facility linked to the Plastic Surgery practices of Randall Sach, Markus Nikitins and Clayton Lang. Situated on South Terrace, immediately next to the Hospital, Sach Day Surgery offers a comprehensive range of Plastic, Reconstructive, Hand and Aesthetic surgical services.

Procedures suitable for Local Anaesthetic or Anaesthetist administered Sedation Anaesthetics are scheduled in the theatre within Sach Day Surgery, while larger cases use the facilities of St Andrew’s.

The complexity of much of this work is highlighted by a recent six-hour surgical procedure led by Dr Nikitins in consultation with the multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer group of specialists at St Andrew’s.

The 79 year old patient, had previously had several skin cancers excised from his scalp. He was referred to Dr Nikitins for management of two large ulcerated scalp lesions. Although excision and skin graft was suitable for one, the other was more invasive.

It had eroded through his skull and reached the dura, the thick layer of tissue surrounding his brain. Biopsy testing revealed a Squamous Cell Carcinoma and the multidisciplinary skills of several medical specialties available at St Andrew’s were recruited for his surgery, post-operative recovery and subsequent post-surgical treatment.

The patient underwent an extensive surgical resection of his skin cancer, which included removal of a segment of his skull. Along with Dr Clayton Lang, Dr Nikitins and the team reconstructed the large defect left following the cancer excision.

The skeletal defect was reconstructed by moulding titanium mesh sheet to recreate the normal shape of the skull. The reconstruction of the scalp was carried out with microsurgical techniques using a large flat muscle from the back. The muscle was dissected from its attachments and the blood vessels known to supply blood were also carefully isolated and removed. After preparation of suitable recipient vessels in his temple, the surgical operating microscope was used to magnify the area to enable reconnection of the vessels to those in the temple allowing blood flow back into the muscle. Skin from the thigh was then grafted onto the muscle.

The skills and expertise of the surgical and nursing teams at St Andrew’s were critical during the surgery, as well as after the procedure, when the patient required monitoring in the Critical Care Unit. He recovered well over the following two days then spent a week in the surgical ward having regular checks before having radiotherapy treatment at the on-site Adelaide Radiotherapy Centre.

St Andrew’s promotes a culture of patient-centered care and supporting the notion of a multidisciplinary approach to ensure the best results for our patients. This case is a wonderful example of where this belief has brought about a remarkable result.

VALÉ The Hospital’s Board of Governors, senior executive and staff were saddened by the recent passing of three highly respected and important members of the St Andrew’s community.

THE HONOURABLE KENNETH TREVOR GRIFFIN LLM

A former State Attorney-General, Trevor Griffin joined the Board of St Andrew’s Hospital in 1970 and continued to serve as a member of our governing body until November 2014 – a remarkable record of service that is unlikely to be repeated.

Born on September 14 1940, the eldest of five children, Trevor attended Goodwood Primary School and later won a scholarship at Scotch College, where he was a very active student and excelled in athletics and rowing. After studying at the University of Adelaide, he gained his Bachelor of Law in 1963.

He was elected State President of the Presbyterian Fellowship of Australia and later became Commonwealth President. He was subsequently appointed as the Procurator of the Church Assembly and held this position until the advent of Church Union (Uniting) in 1977.

Trevor was President of the Liberal Party in South Australia from 1973 to 1976 then in March 1978 became a member of the Legislative Council in the South Australian Parliament.

The following year he was appointed Attorney-General. He served on the Opposition front bench from 1982 to 1993 then was again appointed Attorney-General when the Liberal Party returned to power in 1993.

Trevor retired from Parliament in 2002 after 24 years of service.

This parallel success – professional and volunteer – and his strong connection to his faith were at the very heart of Trevor’s character. Where some may rest on their professional laurels, he lived his life by giving freely of his time to help others. St Andrew’s was just one beneficiary. We thank him for his friendship, advice and support over his many years of service and association with the Hospital. We feel saddened by his loss as he was an important member of our family.

Trevor is survived by his wife Val and their sons Mark and Tim. DR JOHN P MADDERN AM Another long serving St Andrew’s Hospital Board and Committee member, John Maddern, a major founder of the Urology training scheme, recently died leaving a lasting legacy.

John was born in 1925, schooled in Adelaide, and graduated MBBS at Adelaide University in 1948. He commenced a 40-year association with Royal Adelaide Hospital when he started as an intern in 1949. He passed his FRACS in general surgery in 1952, and furthered his training in urology in London and in Canada.

On return to Adelaide, he found that urology was still being done in general surgical units. He was appointed as head of the new Department of Urology at RAH in 1959. He continued in that lead role for 24 years, influencing many trainee urologists.

John was awarded the Urological Society’s highest honour as a Fellow in 1987, along with his good friends

Bruce Pearson, Warwick Macky, and Bill Utley. These giants in urology have now all passed on.

He was awarded membership of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1996.

It is doubtful any other Australian urologist can also claim the joint award of the Australian Sports medal, awarded in 2000.

The latter was awarded for John’s involvement in golf, his recreational passion. His handicap long remained lower than his (normal) PSA, a urologist’s dream! He played state golf for South Australia, and was a longstanding member of multiple golf clubs including Royal Adelaide and St Andrew’s.

In recent years, physical difficulties restricted him, but he retained his strong interest in his family. Sadly, visits to the golf course became memories, rather than rounds!

He was a huge contributor, and his efforts have lead to a better organised specialty, and a much improved relationship between the Urology Society and the RACS. DR BRIAN LANDERS MBBS-FRACS One of St Andrew’s well regarded and leading SA urologists, Dr Brian Landers, passed away peacefully in March a few weeks short of his 59th birthday, after a long and difficult illness.

He was born in the UK while his father was undertaking postgraduate study, returning to live in Australia before his second birthday, and was educated at Pulteney Grammar School.

Brian was very talented, both sportingly and academically. He played in the school’s first 11 and first 18 (Australian Rules Football), and was a state-grade swimmer. In his year twelve exams he was placed first in the state in maths and physics; accomplishments repeated at medical school where he won several prizes, culminating in finishing Dux of his graduating year. Most of us in South Australia were unaware of these achievements, principally because Brian was a quiet achiever, averse to blowing his own trumpet.

He undertook a postgraduate higher degree at Adelaide University in Upper Gastrointestinal and to the disappointment of his supervisors, chose to pursue urology; a loss for general surgery but a gain for urology.

Brian married Jane, who remained his supportive and dedicated partner of twenty five years. After completing his FRACS, they spent two years in London at the Institute of Urology before returning to Adelaide to private and public practice and to start a family.

He was a senior visiting specialist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for 21 years prior to retiring in 2013.

Brian was a much loved man, unassuming and modest despite his considerable achievements and abilities, respected by patients, admired by colleagues, dedicated, and hard working. He was a true gentleman of the profession in every sense of the phrase.

DAY PATIENT SUITE WHAT SERVICES DO WE OFFER?

The Day Patient Suite at St Andrew’s is a hive of activity. For more than 28 years, our trained Endoscopic specialists have been providing South Australians with a high quality endoscopic service and we are proud that our equipment exceeds standards set down by the Gastroenterological Nurses College of Australia (GENCA).

Our Day Patient Suite comprises an 18-bed day ward and two procedure suites, both equipped to provide a range of diagnostic and interventional procedures. Equipment includes the latest Olympus endoscopic equipment and Argon plasma coagulation.

The suite supports our Emergency Department. Patients presenting are fast tracked and assessed by our highly skilled medical staff then referred to one of our renowned Visiting Medical Services. The service in the Endoscopic Suite is provided by highly skilled and respected Colorectal Surgeons, Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists

and our experienced nursing staff ensure a patient centred care experience.

Procedures undertaken in the procedure suites include but are not restricted to: • Colonoscopy • Edonscopy • Gastroscopy • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) • Bronchoscopy • Sigmoidoscopy • Biopsy • Removal of Polyps • Haemorroid Banding Relatives can remain with patients prior to their procedure and be present when the Medical Officer speaks to them following the procedure, enabling them to provide support throughout.

The latter stages of his illness brought challenges for Brian, Jane and their children, Henry, David and Katy, which the family faced with grace and an unwavering courage and determination to not give in.

A kind and gentle giant and a life taken too soon, Brian’s passing will leave a void in SA Urology.

FROM THE ARCHIVES In 1936 the first bricks of St Andrew’s Hospital were laid on South Terrace.

Eight decades later, we look back at our rich history.

Janet Hay, the daughter of Scottish immigrants, was born in 1884 near Harrogate in the Adelaide Hills.

Along with her sister Maggie she trained as a nurse at Miss Lawrence’s Private Hospital (now Wakefield Street Hospital).

When WWI broke out, both young women volunteered as staff nurses and were posted to Salonika in Greece. Conditions proved extremely challenging, with appalling weather.

Food and fresh water were scarce and swarming mosquitoes carried debilitating malaria to patients and nursing staff. By June 1918 Janet had contracted malaria and was transferred to London. She returned to SA in 1919 and was discharged as medically unfit.

Janet became chief theatre sister at Wakefield Street Hospital but was keen to start her own hospital. In May 1934, she purchased a block of vacant land in South Terrace for £1,170, then applied to Adelaide City Council to construct a 16-bed private hospital. Local residents objected and the Council refused her application. Undaunted she resubmitted her application and after a two year struggle, the Council finally gave their approval.

So in 1936 work began on what was to become St Andrew’s. Over the next decade Janet operated the hospital as Matron, living in a flat at the back of the Hospital with her niece Peggy. By 1946, however, her health was failing, and with the Hospital experiencing an acute nursing shortage she decided to sell to the Presbyterian Church of SA. The Contract of Sale was signed on 20 December 1946 for the sum of £16,000. Possession was arranged for 1 January 1947.

Janet died on 6 October 1977, aged 93 years, and is buried in Inverbrackie Presbyterian Cemetery.

Today Ward 4B is named HAY WARD in recognition of her contribution in establishing the original St Andrew’s.

Built on strong Presbyterian traditions, the Hospital is now recognised as one of SA’s leading private hospitals.

WE REMEMBER 2015 marks the centenary of the Anzac’s landing at Gallipoli Cove. In this year it is fitting to remember all Australian servicemen and women who fought and served in all wars, conflicts and peace operations. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity of meeting with Di Lane recently as she approaches her retirement from St Andrew’s.

As the first person featured in this new section of our newsletter, Di provides an insight into our history and ethos and celebrates the high level of care we are known for today.

Di actually wasn’t that keen on the idea of returning to nursing when she first came to St Andrew’s. A friend had convinced her to put in an application, which led to her starting work in the theatres within days of her interview with Matron Marsh. That was back in 1971 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Di’s first encounter with Matron Marsh was the beginning of a rich and diverse career. When asked what was so special about St Andrew’s, she said: “People are treated differently here. We are all individuals but we are part of a family where we all focus on delivering a high standard of patient care.”

‘MY’ ST ANDREW’S Although patient care was always a priority, Di recalled how healthcare has changed since her early years.

She remembers rolling silks for the surgeons to use to stich patients, and how Anaesthetists had to supply and carry their own ventilators for surgery.

During her career, Di transitioned into a number of administration roles, including Assistant Director of Nursing, (Theatres) and Assistant Director of Nursing (Management). As she looks ahead to retirement, her last role with the Hospital is as Risk and Resource Manager – a reflection of how times have changed. When she began in 1971, the administration consisted of one typist for the Hospital, the Board and the Hospital Manager, Mr Marshall.

In conclusion, I asked Di why she has wanted to remain a part of the St Andrew’s team for so long.

She reflected about how her various roles have always been challenging and rewarding and how being part of the development of St Andrew’s has been so interesting. “I was a part of the planning team in 1980 for the Theatre Block, during the 1990’s for Central Wing and as I approach retirement, we are planning another big development with new theatres and day surgery suite. I have been so fortunate to see and be involved in so much. Even during one of the tough times in the history of St Andrew’s, people still wanted to work here, a lot of them are still here. That shows loyalty.”

We wish Di all the very best for her retirement and thank her most sincerely for her incredible service to St Andrew’s. Our people are what make us stand out, and Di is certainly a fine example of someone who embodies the St Andrew’s spirit.

Charles graduated from the University of Otago in 2001 and his internship, general medical and cardiology training were completed at the Dunedin Hospital, New Zealand. He was awarded FRACP (dual training in Cardiology and General Medicine) in 2012 and completed 18 months of Interventional Fellowship at the Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand.

Charles has a special interest in the diagnosis and management of coronary artery disease as well as various aspects of interventional cardiology, including fractional flow reserve, intracoronary Optical Coherence Tomography and Bioresorbable Everolimus Eluting Vascular Scaffold and is planning to further develop his interest in structural heart intervention.

Apart from English, Charles is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese.

Charles will be performing diagnostic and interventional procedures at St Andrew’s Hospital and consulting at the St Andrew’s Medical Centre.
