PRESIDENT’S REPORT This report outlines the activities by the Old Collegians Association (OCA) during 2021. In November the OCA donated the final $50,000 instalment of the $150,000 pledge to the Ben Gough Family Theatre. As highlighted in the OCA Annual General Meeting (AGM) Report, over the last eight years the OCA has donated $446,920 to the College. We farewelled Bryan Pearson (OC 1980) from the Board of Governors after a tireless 12 years, and welcomed Stephanie Bain (OC 1992) as our new Old Collegian Board Nominee.

ANZAC Day We were able to return to the Centennial Chapel for the 2021 ANZAC Day Service and it was a privilege to read the Roll of Honour alongside Rector, Christine Leighton, as we remembered those who gave their lives for us.

Annual Dinner On Friday 13 August 2021, the OCA hosted the Annual Dinner. We had an incredible turnout with 134 Old Collegians in attendance, ranging in peer years from 1949 to 2019. We came together to celebrate the amazing achievements of some of our Old Collegians by presenting our annual awards. This year, the Maginness Cup Sports Award went to Sam Lane (OC 2015), who represented New Zealand in the Black Sticks hockey team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Cockram Cultural Award was awarded to Sven Pannell (OC 1996) for his achievements in the film industry – notably his award-winning 2015 documentary Act of Kindness, which won awards at the New Zealand International Film Festival and other festivals around the world. The Alister Newton Service Award was won by Andy Munro (OC 1974) for his tireless service to his community, as Chair for both the North Canterbury Rural Support Trust and Friends of the Glenmark Church Incorporated. Rev. Sandra Wright-Taylor was made an Honorary Old Collegian for her 12 years’ service to St Andrew’s College and Bryan Pearson (OC 1980) was gifted a beautiful artwork of the College, by artist and OCA Executive, Kelvin McMillan (OC 1977). The evening was expertly emceed by OCA Executive, Sam Crosbie (OC 2009), not to mention Jonathan Wells (OC 1987), who had us entertained with his accomplished Address to the Haggis.

Reunions In 2021 we hosted 10 Years On (Class of 2011), a double 50 Years On (Classes of 1970 and 1971), a double 60 Years On (Classes of 1960 and 1961), 1st XV Rugby Reunion (teams of 1951, 1961, 1971, 1981, 1991, 2001, 2012). The 40 Years On (Class of 1981) will be combined with the 2022 40 Years On Reunion.

Gentlemen’s Luncheon

2021 Leavers’ Dinner

On Friday 15 October, the College hosted the annual Gentlemen’s Luncheon. A group of 75 Old Collegians, ranging in age from 73 to 98, were warmly welcomed to the campus, including 18 gentlemen from the class of 1951–1955 who were celebrating their 70 Years On Reunion.

It was a privilege to welcome the 2021 Leavers into the OCA and present them with our badge after a challenging year at the College. The strength and resilience of the 2021 Leavers was clearly evident as they delighted the guests with a great number of outstanding musical performances. The Year 13 Dean, Liz Gormack, gave a moving speech which deservedly concluded with a standing ovation.

For some, the Gentlemen’s Luncheon has become an annual event, but for many others, it was their first time returning to the College for some time. The gentlemen enjoyed a short tour of the Centennial Chapel, where they were entertained by Russell Kent (OC 1959) on the organ, then were treated to a fabulous lunch in the Strowan House dining room, where hilarious antics and tales were shared. George Scrimshaw (OC 1955) and Murray McIver (OC 1955) delivered the toasts to the College and Absent Friends. Mac Hamilton (OC 1957) was introduced to his uncle’s 1928 tennis medal, that was recently acquired by the College after being spotted in an online auction.

Annual Golf Tournament The annual OCA Golf Tournament was held in spectacular weather on Friday 19 March, combined with the Strowan Rose Bowl, at Waitikiri Golf Course. Due to the sheer number of players attending this event, our golfers spilled onto the neighbouring Bottle Lake Golf Course and we were very grateful to them for accommodating our group of 140.

Wellington Regional Event On Thursday 10 June, the Wellington Old Collegians Cocktail Function was generously hosted by Jonathan Scragg (OC 1996) at the offices of Duncan Cotterill, Wellington, with a fantastic attendance. It was a wonderful event and very well represented by Old Collegians from 1962–2014. Our special guest was Head Boy of 2021, Jack Calder, who along with his father Paul Calder (OC 1986), enjoyed meeting fellow Old Collegians from the region. Jack’s impromptu address to the group highlighted the importance of these gatherings, especially for the younger Old Collegians, to appreciate the rich history, connections, stories, and lifelong friends that come from attending St Andrew’s College. A big thanks to Jonathan and Duncan Cotterill, for making this reunion possible.

Staff Departures We recognise the departure of Honorary Old Collegian, David Evans, who has served 21 years as the General Manager of St Andrew’s College. We thank David for the service he has given to the College. David will continue his work at the College, in the role of Project Manager for the Ben Gough Family Theatre development.

Staff 21 Years’ Service This year, we had the honour of recognising some long-serving staff and their contribution to the College through acknowledging them as Honorary Old Collegians at the OCA Christmas Function. In 2021 we recognised the long service of David Evans, Jo Gregg, Jan Marshall, Annabelle McLauchlan, David Bevin, and Dave Jensen. Lastly, I would like to thank our OCA Secretary, Lisa Clark, and all members of the OCA Executive for their support and assistance this year, and in particular the contribution from all in navigating the ongoing impacts of COVID-19. I am thankful we were able to welcome many familiar faces back to the College in light of the ongoing pandemic.

Meg Black (OC 2010) OCA President

College Prizegiving The College Prizegiving was held online this year, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Despite this, Prizegiving was once again a celebration of the amazing talent at St Andrew’s College. The large number of academic achievements were well-celebrated. Special congratulations to the Dux of the College, Oliver Odlin (OC 2021) for his achievement.
