. A . C . O 2020 ANNUAL REPORT ST ANDREW’S COLLEGE OLD COLLEGIANS ASSOCIATION

PRESIDENT’S REPORT This report outlines the activities by the Old Collegians Association during 2020. In May, the OCA donated $30,000 towards the Community Support Programme that the College put in place to support families post the COVID-19 lockdown. Funding was also provided to support the Mixed touch rugby team getting to Nationals in December, in a departure from individual travel grants, as recognition for the difficulties faced all-round during 2020. As highlighted in the OCA AGM Annual Report, over the last seven years the Old Collegians Association has donated $388,820 to the College.

ANZAC Day While both the Founders’ Day and ANZAC Day events had to be cancelled, Jonathan Wells did have the honour of being able to record the reading of the Roll of Honour in conjunction with Rector Christine Leighton, which was included in the recorded ANZAC Service and shared with the St Andrew’s community.

Annual Dinner A key event for the Old Collegians, the Annual Dinner held in September was even more special given that many Old Collegian events were cancelled or postponed due to the changing COVID-19 Alert Levels. With the event capped at 80 people, specials guests, Old Collegians, and partners celebrated their connection to the College, and we were able to celebrate several Old Collegian successes. It was a pleasure to be able to recognise the achievements of Paul McNeil (OC 1979), based in Byron Bay, Australia. Paul won the Cockram Cultural Award for his work as a Graphic Designer and Artist. Tim Perry (OC 2006) was also recognised with the L.G, Maginness Memorial Cup for Sports Personality of the Year for his achievements in New Zealand Rugby. The Alister Newton Award was awarded to Barry Maister (CNZM), Rector 1995–2001, for service to sport and education. It was an honour to have Barry attend the dinner and a highlight of the evening was hearing him reflect on his time at the College, as well as his involvement in sport and education in New Zealand.

Reunions An important aspect of the yearly alumni activity is the year group functions, and pre COVID-19 these continued to show strong support. The reunions which were able to be held earlier in the year (40 and 50 Years On) were both well attended and enjoyed by all. The 10 Years On Reunion, being my reunion, was a special event, and my peers enjoyed a chance to visit the Centennial Chapel for the first time. Everyone who attended had an enjoyable evening catching up on the last 10 years. The OCA has held additional events in 2021 to make up for events not held due to COVID-19 in 2020.

Gentlemen’s Luncheon Despite the cancellations, the Gentlemen’s Luncheon was able to be held on 16 October. Combined with the 70 Years On, 75 Years On and the Mid-mark reunion groups, the capped event saw a strong turnout with numbers reaching the maximum. The toast to absent friends by Euan Hilson (OC 1954) was very moving, with a large number of Old Collegians passing away in the current year.

College Prizegiving The Prizegiving, held at the Christchurch Arena, was once again a celebration of the amazing talent at St Andrew’s College. The range of performances were all incredible to watch, and Archie Milligan’s (OC 2020) singing of the Skye Boat Song was truly something special. The large number of academic achievements were also well-celebrated and special congratulations to the Dux of the College, Samuel Croot (OC 2020), for your achievement.

2020 Leavers Dinner It was a privilege to welcome the 2020 leavers into the Old Collegians Association and present them with our badge, especially after such a challenging year. The Leaver’s Address by Andrew Garbett (OC 2020) highlighted the bravery of the year group and the leadership they have shown in the College this year. The speech was inspiring and ended with a well-deserved standing ovation.

Staff Departures We recognise the departure of Honorary Old Collegian Sharon McDonald who has served 30 years as the Cafeteria Manager. We thank Sharon for the service she has given to the College and know that she will be missed in the Cafeteria by students, staff, and parents.

Staff 21 Years’ Service This year, we had the honour of recognising some long-serving staff and their contribution to the College through acknowledging them as Honorary Old Collegians at the OCA Christmas Function. It was great to talk to the staff who contribute to all parts of the College and celebrate their service. Lastly, I would like to thank the Old Collegians’ Executive for their support and assistance as I have taken over as President this year. The knowledge the longer-serving members pass on to the younger Old Collegians is so valuable and much appreciated by all.
