. A . C . O 2019 ANNUAL REPORT ST ANDREW’S COLLEGE OLD COLLEGIANS ASSOCIATION
PRESIDENT’S REPORT This report outlines the activities by the Old Collegians Association during 2019. One major decision the Executive has recently made is to pledge $150,000 towards the new Ben Gough Family Theatre and secure naming rights for the foyer. We look forward to this fantastic addition to the College campus.
Founders’ Day The 102nd Founders’ Day Assembly also marked the start of the Centenary celebrations of the St Andrews Pipe Band, and it was fitting that there were three former Pipe Majors on stage, with a presentation to the College’s Pipe Band Director, Richard Hawke, for his outstanding contribution to the Pipe Band, Ben Murray as guest speaker and Pipe Major of the winning juvenile band at the World Championships in 2013, and myself, as Old Collegian Association President. I believe one of the Robert Burns Scholars commented that St Andrew’s was more Scottish than some of the Scottish schools they had visited. It would be interesting to know how many schools include the Address to the Haggis as part of one of their major assemblies, but it was an honour to again be asked to perform the Address to the Haggis on this special day.
ANZAC Day One of the key events in the Old Collegian calendar is the ANZAC Day Service and the chance for the school community to recognise the sacrifice of former students and teachers. It was a special service to be a part of but the address delivered by Year 13 student Charles Zhang was particularly moving. It was also a privilege to be able to read out the Roll of Honour with Rector Christine Leighton and the laying of wreaths with President of the Ladies Circle, Jill Irving.
Annual Dinner The OCA Annual Dinner held in the Strowan House dining room is the key event in the year for the Old Collegians. Around 90 special guests, old collegians and partners, celebrated their connection to the College. The dinner is also the time we celebrate Old Collegian successes and this year we awarded the Alister Newton Cup for Service to Brian Palliser (OC 1962) – a lawyer whose voluntary service to the Christchurch community has fostered overseas relations. Brian was also recognised with a Queen’s Service medal in 2017 for his services to community. Richie Mo’unga (OC 2012) won the Maginness Cup for Excellence in Sport for his feats on the rugby field as a Crusader and All Black. Richie was also named last year’s Super Rugby Player of the Year. The Cockram Cultural Award for Excellence and Service to Culture went to Bridie Connell (OC 2007), an award-winning writer and multi‑disciplinary performer, who has extensive experience and training in acting, comedy, voice, artistry and musical theatre. In 2018, Bridie won an ARIA award for best comedy release. A Special Achievement Award was also presented to Isaac Giesen (OC 2010) for being the first New Zealander to row the Atlantic solo, whilst raising awareness and funds for mental health.

This year, I also had the honour to recognise John Sinclair’s contribution to the College (1983–2000) and acknowledge him as an Honorary Old Collegian.
Reunions An important aspect of the yearly alumni activities are the year group functions and this year we held functions for 10, 30, 50, and 60 Years On cohorts. One special reunion each year is the Gentleman’s Lunch and this year around 90 gathered in the Strowan House dining room to catch‑up and share memories. George Scrimshaw (OC 1955) did the toast to absent friends and Ray French (OC 1946) the Grace. Guests were later entertained by the toast to the College from Ernie Poole (OC 1950).
College Prizegiving The College Prizegiving, held at Horncastle Arena, was once again a celebration of the amazing talent at St Andrew’s College. From the Kapa Haka to performances from the ballet, jazz band, choirs, orchestra and Pipe Band and dancers – it was a delight to watch. But at the end of the day, St Andrew’s College is about learning and it is always fantastic to see the special recognition given to the Dux of the College including the ‘three cheers’. Well done Hamilton Martin.
2019 Leavers Dinner It was a privilege to welcome the 2019 leavers into the Old Collegians Association and present them with our badge. There was certainly a sense of excitement that this was the final official function for the students. The Dean’s speech by Bronwyn Radcliffe was inspiring and reflective and ended with a standing ovation. Shannon Fraser’s leavers address was also very special.
Staff Departures One of the last functions for the year was to attend the leaving functions for five long serving and Honorary Old Collegians. We thank Simon Williams, Alastair McGowan, Pete Feary, Geoff Stanton, and David Farmer for the service they have given to the school and hope to see them back at an Annual Dinner at some stage. Lastly, I would like to thank the Old Collegian’s Executive for their support and assistance over the year. It is great to see so many younger Old Collegians willing to get involved and give back to the College, and this bodes well for the future.

FINANCE REPORT The following financial report provides a summary of the accounts accepted by the St Andrew’s College Old Collegians Association and lodged with the Charities Services. RJ Preston Ltd completed a review of the OCA accounts and the Executive would like to highlight:
•
An audit or review of the OCA’s accounts is not required by law but we engage RJ Preston to undertake a review for the purpose of good governance practices and to give comfort to the Executive and membership that the OCA’s finances are being appropriately managed;
•
The RJ Preston review for the 2019 accounts is clean, other than one qualification;
•
Because the OCA operates its bank account through the College’s bank account (which is done for administrative ease and a historically more favourable interest rate), RJ Preston is not able to comment on the College’s bank account processes;
•
BDO audits the College’s accounts and has provided a clean audit opinion of the College’s accounts. This includes an audit of the College’s bank account processes;
•
A full version of the OCA Performance Report is available on request to the St Andrews College Alumni Co‑ordinator.
