St Andrew’s College Memorial Chapel was extensively damaged in the earthquakes and sadly had to be decommissioned and taken down in 2013. Now a new Centennial Chapel will be built as the College moves into its second century. The new Chapel will be used for chapel services, celebrations, assemblies, presentations and special musical events.

OUR VISION The new St Andrew’s College Chapel will be at the heart of the College community – a place of worship, celebration, inspiration and gathering throughout our lives. The Chapel will embody the values, history, traditions and future aspirations of the College. It will commemorate the men and women whose lives were given in service, to community and to country. A place of contemplative beauty, the Chapel and its garden will be a serene island that anchors the College community. A window to St Andrew’s College, the Chapel will welcome members of the College and extended community to a school founded on Truth, Excellence and Faith. While preserving all the important aspects of our past, our new Chapel will look to the future and provide inspiration and opportunity for those yet to come.

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION The Memorial Chapel has played a significant role in the life of the College since it was opened in 1955. Built in memory of Old Collegians and staff who gave their lives in the WWII it was a sacred space for students, staff and our alumni community until the earthquake devastation in February 2011. The College undertook extensive community consultation about the new Chapel welcoming members from the different community groups to give feedback via forums and a survey. Through this process the College identified what our community considered the ten most important features for the new Chapel.

CHAPEL ARCHITECT A great deal of time, planning and expertise went into arranging an architectural competition to choose an architect to lead the rebuild. A design by Patrick Clifford from Architectus was chosen as the winning concept. Patrick Clifford is the design director of Architectus and a former Adjunct Professor of Design at Unitec in Auckland. Patrick recently won a gold medal
from the New Zealand Institute of Architects recognising his expertise and contribution to architecture. The gold medal is the highest honour bestowed by the New Zealand Institute of Architects. It is awarded to an individual for an outstanding contribution to the practice of architecture, demonstrated through the production of a consistently high-quality body of work over a period of time.

Within thee War Memorrial enclave oppposite the maain entrance of o the Chapel, stands an exqquisitely carveed table on whhich lies the B Book of Remem mbrance with names of Oldd Collegians loost in World War W II. This waas designed, written w out andd illuminateed by WA Suttton, the noted artist, and itss use of traditioonal Italian Reenaissance sccript has been described as ‘possibly the finest, purest and mostt notable exam mple of illuminated lettering done in New ZZealand’.

Laid on S St Andrew’s Day (30 Novem mber 1952), oppened in Marcch 1955.

Rev AT TThompson maanaged to acquuire from the U University of St S Andrew’s Scotland’s oldeest (establisheed in1411) a sm mall block of ssandstone from m one of its eaarliest buildinggs. Part of this historic stonne, with its meedieval carved moulding stilll intact, is set into the eaast wall of the entrance porcch of the Chappel. In the navve, near the vvestry door, yoou will see the rest of the Unniversity stone with the chappel dedication recorded on it.

The College was committed to salvaging many of the heritage items from the Memorial Chapel to be used in the new Chapel design. Christine describes Patrick’s design as inspirational. “It’s forward-looking while at the same time incorporating the memorial aspects of the present Chapel, including the memorial book, stained glass windows, oak doors, bell, communion table, baptismal font, ceremonial chairs, original stone, gargoyles and around 2000 of the original bricks.” St Andrew’s College Chapel – Developed Design Report | 24 June 2014

Patrick says that instead of the salvaged heritage items being scattered throughout the Chapel, they will be incorporated into a memorial wall along one side of the building. The structure, which is about 30 metres long and four metres wide, has rooms designed into it and has been shaped to accommodate the baptismal font and Book of Remembrance.

CHAPEL TIMELINE At the beginning of 2015 significant ground work was undertaken on the Chapel site to enable construction to begin. 512 rammed aggregate piers were installed in the ground using in excess of 1000 tonnes of aggregate. Construction has started on the new Chapel and it is estimated the facility will be finished in mid-2016. Long established Christchurch construction firm Armitage Williams Ltd has been appointed to build the new Chapel. Director Mark Blyth said there are many features that make the new Chapel unique including the magnificent curved roof line.
“It’s an exciting project because it marries the past with the present, traditional with contemporary style. We love that parts of the old Chapel, such as salvaged stonework, are being incorporated into the architecture.”

OPENING OF THE NEW CHAPEL
SHARING OUR SPECIAL PLACE
The College intends to officially open the new Chapel in September 2016 in conjunction with the opening of the College’s Centenary ahead of the 100th prizegiving which takes place at the end of next year. More information will be available on the College website and other communication channels as details are confirmed.
The College is also pleased to confirm that it will share the Chapel with The Village Presbyterian Church for their Sunday services. St Giles’ and St Stephen’s parishes have joined to form The Village as both of their churches were damaged in the earthquakes.
The new foundation stone was laid at the 2015 Founders’ Day ceremony, alongside the foundation stone from the Memorial Chapel. Rector Christine Leighton said in her speech to the large community who gathered for the special occasion, “Our new Chapel will retain artefacts and historical relics of the Memorial Chapel and the sacrifice made by Old Collegians and staff who have laid down their lives for their country, will be forever in our hearts and minds. We also remember today all those associated with our school who have died, and feel glad that our beautiful new Chapel will stand in memory of them. Our Chapel also will stand to remind us of the challenges we as a community have faced, most recently the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011.”

Rev. Martin Stewart from The Village has been involved with St Andrew’s for around seven years from when he was moderator for the Christchurch Presbytery. He works closely with College Chaplain Paul Morrow and often leads services for St Andrew’s. He says that many from the Papanui and Bryndwr communities that make up The Village feel a close connection to St Andrew’s and want to support the College. They look forward to welcoming the wider school community to their services. College Chaplain Paul Morrow agrees that it is “wonderful to be able to share our special place with the wider community, especially in this post-earthquake environment where so many communities have lost their places of worship.”
